Option in Creative Writing
All of the English Department’s creative writing courses are also part of the Option in Creative Writing, which is designed for students who have an interest in exploring and developing creative practice as a complement to their current disciplinary studies. The Option is designed for incremental development, aiming to give students an opportunity to study the theory and craft of writing and to apply what they learn in writing activities, assignments and workshops. Over the course of study, students will expand their writing repertoire, build writing communities, learn techniques for revising, and develop methods for generating ideas while building portfolios in prose fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, and script-writing.
Students who have fulfilled the requirements for an Honours or a General degree in any subject may graduate with an Option in Creative Writing if they have successfully completed the 4.0 credits from the following courses, including courses from at least two different departments:

Department Overview
Welcome to the Department of English Studies, a vibrant hub for lovers of literature and creative writing. Our carefully designed courses, BA (Hons) English Literature and BA (Hons) English Literature with Creative Writing, foster a deep appreciation for the literary world and offer a platform for those aspiring to write creatively with both designed to kindle your love for literature and empower your creativity.
Our English Literature degree enhances your understanding of literary criticism, broadens your knowledge of various literary movements, and encourages you to become a free-thinking critic. The Creative Writing pathway develops your imaginative writing skills and introduces you to arts management and publishing with the opportunity to create and launch your own anthology.
Additionally, both pathways provide opportunities to explore topics of your choice in a final-year dissertation project, from classic literary analysis to contemporary themes to a body of original creative writing.
Our department runs an annual Literary Festival featuring esteemed authors and poets and offers an opportunity to engage with the city of Peterborough's vibrant literary scene. We also work with the creative writing magazine Mono and offer students the opportunity to gain publishing experience with the editorial team.
Malcolm Bradbury Scholarship Bursary
The Malcolm Bradbury Scholarship Bursary of £7500 is available to students from underrepresented and/or socio-economic backgrounds. The bursary will support living costs that allow students time to develop and promote literacy activities.

Summer 2024 ICC Course--Intro to Poetry
Take intro to poetry this summer.
The Department of Literatures in English will offer an online section of ENGL 11300 Introduction to Poetry this upcoming summer. The course can count within the ICC "Themes and Perspectives" category as either a Humanities course or as a Creative Arts course. It is also themed both within "Identities" and "Inquiry, Imagination, and Innovation." The course instructor is Dan Breen. The course will convey four credits, and run as a mixture of synchronous and asynchronous class meetings. The goal of the class is to explore the ways in which lyric poetry produces its effects, how it works, and what capacities it might possess as measured against other forms of writing (such as narrative). We will also concentrate on developing fluency in poetic language. Poetry possesses a remarkable capacity to compress patterns of thought and intensify emotions in order to articulate experiences that other forms of writing struggle to express. This peculiar expressiveness of poetry results in part from the different and often complex registers of language within which poems construct comparisons, work out problems, and think through questions. Please contact Dan Breen via email ( [email protected] ) with any further questions about the course or feel free to drop in during his spring 2024 office hours: Tues. 1-2pm and Weds. 12-2 in 302 Muller.
