Professional wrestling career

New japan pro wrestling, super rookie (2002–2005).

Nakamura joined NJPW in March 2002 and quickly began making a name for himself as a bright prospect for the company. Having earned the nickname "Super Rookie", Nakamura impressed both NJPW officials and fans with an excellent combination of strength, speed, and technical skill. Alongside fellow rookies Hiroshi Tanahashi and Katsuyori Shibata , Nakamura became known as one of the "new Three Musketeers ". Nakamura also began training vale tudo and on December 31, 2002, he made his mixed martial arts debut in a match, where he was defeated by Daniel Gracie via submission to an armlock. Nakamura's second MMA match took place on May 2, 2003, when he defeated Jan Nortje with a guillotine choke. He followed that up on September 13 with another submission victory over Shane Eitner in his third MMA match. On December 9, 2003, Nakamura defeated Hiroyoshi Tenzan for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship , thus becoming the youngest wrestler in history to win the title. On January 4 , 2004, at Wrestling World 2004 , Nakamura successfully defended the IWGP Heavyweight Championship against the NWF Heavyweight Champion Yoshihiro Takayama in a title unification match. However, just a month later, Nakamura was forced to vacate the title due to an injury. Upon his return, Nakamura received a shot at the title, now held by Bob Sapp , but was defeated by the defending champion on May 3, 2004. Later that month, Nakamura competed in his to date last MMA match, defeating Alexey Ignashov with a forearm choke on May 22. On December 11, 2004, Nakamura and his tag team partner Hiroshi Tanahashi defeated Kensuke Sasaki and Minoru Suzuki in a decision match to win the IWGP Tag Team Championship . On January 4 , 2005, at Toukon Festival: Wrestling World 2005 Nakamura defeated his own tag team partner, Tanahashi, to win the IWGP U-30 Openweight Championship . During Nakamura's and Tanahashi tag team title reign, the two left for an excursion to Mexico , where they feuded with Los Guerreros del Infierno and defended their titles against Rey Bucanero and Olímpico . A few weeks later, on October 30 , 2005, they lost the titles to Cho-Ten ( Masahiro Chono and Hiroyoshi Tenzan).

Excursion and return (2006–2009)

Nakamura challenged Brock Lesnar for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship on January 4 , 2006, at Toukon Shidou Chapter 1 , but lost. In March 2006, Nakamura announced that he would depart on a learning excursion in order to further improve his wrestling skills. Among other things, he would travel to Mexico, Brazil and Russia, as well as train with Brock Lesnar at his personal gym in order to gain muscle mass. NJPW President Simon Inoki later suggested that as part of his learning excursion, Nakamura would be loaned to World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) to gain experience in working large American shows. However, it proved to be mostly speculation and never came to pass, as Nakamura was urgently needed back in New Japan due to Lesnar's departure.

On September 24, 2006, Nakamura made his long-awaited return to New Japan, joining Masahiro Chono's Black stable, which had the goal of reforming New Japan with Chono as the president and Nakamura as the "Ace". Nakamura had greatly improved his muscular mass during his overseas training and also debuted a new finisher, called the Landslide. On December 10, 2006, Nakamura was unable to win the IWGP Heavyweight Championship from then-champion Tanahashi and was again unsuccessful on January 4 , 2007 at the Wrestle Kingdom I show where he lost to Toshiaki Kawada . Nakamura entered the 2007 G1 Climax tournament, where he reached the semifinals, before dislocating his shoulder. The injury sidelined Nakamura for months, but on November 11 he made his return and took over the leadership of Black from Chono and reformed the stable under the new name RISE , consisting of himself, Minoru , Milano Collection A.T. , Hirooki Goto , Giant Bernard , Travis Tomko , and Prince Devitt . Low Ki was later added to the stable after Milano was injured, having impressed NJPW officials during an appearance when he was still with Total Nonstop Action Wrestling . On December 9 Nakamura defeated Togi Makabe to earn an IWGP Heavyweight Championship match at the following month's Tokyo Dome show.

On January 4 , 2008, Nakamura defeated his rival Tanahashi in the main event of Wrestle Kingdom II , winning the IWGP Heavyweight Championship for the second time. He followed that up with defeating Kurt Angle on February 17, 2008 to win the IGF version of the IWGP Heavyweight Championship and unify it with his own NJPW version of the title. He lost the IWGP Heavyweight Championship to All Japan Pro Wrestling representative Keiji Mutoh in Osaka on April 27, 2008.

September 5, 2008, Nakamura and stablemate Hirooki Goto challenged Togi Makabe and Toru Yano for the IWGP Tag Team titles but failed, and afterwards Giant Bernard and Rick Fuller attacked Nakamura and Goto and joined Makabe's GBH (Great Bash Heel) group along with the returning Low Ki. He also failed to win back the IWGP Title from Keiji Mutoh on October 13. On February 15, 2009, Nakamura faced Hiroshi Tanahashi for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship, but once again failed to regain the title.

Strong style resurrection (2009–2012)

In April 2009, Nakamura turned heel, siding with the former members of GBH (especially Toru Yano) in a feud against Togi Makabe and Tomoaki Honma. This new group was soon named CHAOS with Nakamura as their leader. Nakamura began to work a much rougher style, using a lot of knees and continuing to use a straight right hand as a frequent move in addition to the Bomaye, his new finisher. It was the Bomaye that took him to the finals of the 2009 G1 Climax , where he fell to Togi Makabe. Prior to the final Nakamura had gone undefeated, winning each match with the Bomaye. The move was also credited for fracturing IWGP Heavyweight Champion Hiroshi Tanahashi's orbital bone in the semi-finals of the G1, which forced Tanahashi to vacate the title later that month.

On September 27, 2009, Nakamura avenged his G1 loss and defeated Makabe in a decision match to win the IWGP Heavyweight title for a third time. Upon winning the title, Nakamura drew the ire of the likes of Antonio Inoki by announcing his plan of wanting to restore the "Strong Style" of New Japan by capturing the original IWGP Heavyweight Championship belt from Inoki to replace the fourth generation title belt Nakamura himself has. On October 12 , he successfully defended the title against Shinjiro Otani . On November 8 at Destruction '09 Nakamura successfully defended his title against previous champion Hiroshi Tanahashi. On December 5, he retained the title by defeating Yuji Nagata . On January 4 , 2010, at Wrestle Kingdom IV , Nakamura successfully defended his IWGP Heavyweight Championship against Yoshihiro Takayama in a rematch of their 2004 Tokyo Dome title unification bout. After defeating Takayama he was challenged by Manabu Nakanishi , whom he would pin on February 14 at New Japan's ISM show in Sumo Hall, making his fifth defense. On April 4 Nakamura made his sixth successful title defense against the 2010 New Japan Cup winner and former teammate Hirooki Goto and afterwards accepted Togi Makabe's challenge for the title. On May 3, 2010, at Wrestling Dontaku 2010 Nakamura lost the IWGP Heavyweight Championship to Makabe. Following the loss, Nakamura was sidelined with a shoulder injury, until he returned on June 19 at Dominion 6.19 , defeating Daniel Puder . Simon Inoki and Atsushi Sawada of IGF appeared at the show and seemed to eye up Nakamura after the match. On July 19 Nakamura received a rematch for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship, but was once again defeated by Togi Makabe. The following month Nakamura entered the 2010 G1 Climax , where he won four out of his seven-round robin stage matches, including one over eventual winner Satoshi Kojima , and was leading his block heading to the final day, where he wrestled Pro Wrestling Noah's Go Shiozaki to a 30-minute time limit draw and thus missed the finals of the tournament by a single point. The draw with Shiozaki led to a No Time Limit match at a Pro Wrestling Noah show on August 22, where Shiozaki was victorious. Despite losing to Hirooki Goto in a number one contender's match on October 11, Nakamura was hand–picked by the new IWGP Heavyweight Champion, Satoshi Kojima, as his first challenger. The title match took place on December 11 and ended with Kojima retaining his title.

On January 4 , 2011, Nakamura avenged his loss to Go Shiozaki by defeating him in a singles match at Wrestle Kingdom V . On May 3, Nakamura failed in his attempt to regain the IWGP Heavyweight Championship from Hiroshi Tanahashi. From late May to early June, Nakamura worked a tour with Mexican promotion Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL), whom New Japan had a working agreement with. On August 1, Nakamura entered the 2011 G1 Climax and, after winning seven out of his nine-round robin stage matches, finished first in his block to advance to the finals of the tournament. On August 14, Nakamura defeated Tetsuya Naito to win the 2011 G1 Climax and earn another shot at the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. Nakamura went on to challenge for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship on September 19, but failed to recapture the title from Hiroshi Tanahashi. In the 2011 G1 Tag League , Nakamura teamed with Toru Yano as the "Chaos Top Team", winning all five of their group stage matches, advancing to the semifinals of the tournament with a clean sheet. On November 6, Nakamura and Yano were eliminated from the tournament in the semifinals by the team of Minoru Suzuki and Lance Archer . On January 4 , 2012, at Wrestle Kingdom VI , the Chaos Top Team was defeated by Pro Wrestling Noah representatives, Go Shiozaki and Naomichi Marufuji .

Intercontinental Champion (2012–2016)

On July 22, 2012, Nakamura defeated Hirooki Goto to win the IWGP Intercontinental Championship for the first time. In August's 2012 G1 Climax tournament , Nakamura wrestled in the same block as fellow Chaos member and recent IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada . The two stablemates faced each other on August 5, with Nakamura picking up the win, effectively solidifying his spot as the leader of Chaos in the process. After four wins and three losses, Nakamura was defeated in the final day of the tournament by Hiroyoshi Tenzan and was thus eliminated from the finals, failing to defend his crown. On August 26, Nakamura traveled to the United States to make his first successful defense of the IWGP Intercontinental Championship, defeating Oliver John at a Sacramento Wrestling Federation (SWF) event in Gridley, California . The following day, Nakamura threw the ceremonial first pitch at a Major League Baseball game between the Texas Rangers and Tampa Bay Rays in Arlington, Texas . On October 8 at King of Pro-Wrestling , Nakamura successfully defended the IWGP Intercontinental Championship in a rematch against Hirooki Goto. On November 11 at Power Struggle , Nakamura made his third successful defense against Karl Anderson . From November 20 to December 1, Nakamura took part in the round-robin portion of the 2012 World Tag League , alongside stablemate Tomohiro Ishii under the team name "Chaos Invincible". The team finished with a record of three wins, which included a win over stablemates Kazuchika Okada and Yoshi-Hashi , and three losses, failing to advance from their block. On January 4 , 2013, at Wrestle Kingdom VII , Nakamura defeated Kazushi Sakuraba for his fourth successful defense of the IWGP Intercontinental Championship. From January 18 to 19, Nakamura took part in the Fantastica Mania 2013 weekend, co-promoted by New Japan and CMLL. In the main event of the second night, he made his fifth successful defense of the IWGP Intercontinental Championship against La Sombra . In early 2013, Nakamura became involved in Chaos' rivalry with New Japan's other top villainous stable, Suzuki-gun . On March 3 at New Japan's 41st anniversary event, Nakamura defeated Suzuki-gun's Lance Archer for his sixth successful title defense. On April 5, Nakamura and Tomohiro Ishii unsuccessfully challenged Archer and Davey Boy Smith Jr. , K.E.S. , for the IWGP Tag Team Championship. Two days later at Invasion Attack , Nakamura successfully defended the IWGP Intercontinental Championship against Smith, avenging the previous loss from the first round of the New Japan Cup. On May 3 at Wrestling Dontaku 2013 , Nakamura defeated Suzuki-gun's newest member Shelton X Benjamin for his eighth successful defense of the IWGP Intercontinental Championship.

On May 11, Nakamura left for another tour with Mexican promotion CMLL. His first match back in Mexico took place the following day, when he teamed with El Felino and Negro Casas in a six-man tag team Two Out of Three Falls match at Arena Coliseo , where they were defeated by Máscara Dorada , Rush and Titán . Nakamura quickly started a rivalry with La Sombra and, after suffering two pinfall defeats against the Mexican in six-man tag team matches on April 17 and 24, accepted his challenge for the IWGP Intercontinental Championship, setting up a Fantastica Mania 2013 rematch between the two. The match took place on May 31 and saw La Sombra once again defeat Nakamura to become the new IWGP Intercontinental Champion, ending his reign at 313 days and eight successful title defenses. Nakamura wrestled his final match of the tour on June 9, when he was defeated by Rush in a singles match. Nakamura returned to New Japan on June 22 at Dominion 6.22 in a tag team match, where he and Tomohiro Ishii were defeated by Minoru Suzuki and Shelton X Benjamin, who pinned Nakamura for the win. On July 20, Nakamura regained the IWGP Intercontinental Championship from La Sombra, becoming the first two-time holder of the title. From August 1 to 11, Nakamura took part in the 2013 G1 Climax . Finishing with a record of five wins and four losses, Nakamura narrowly failed to advance to the finals, after losing to Shelton X Benjamin on the final day. On September 29 at Destruction , Nakamura defeated Benjamin to make the first successful defense of his second reign as the IWGP Intercontinental Champion. His second successful defense took place on October 14 at King of Pro-Wrestling , when he defeated Pro Wrestling Noah representative Naomichi Marufuji. On November 9 at Power Struggle , Nakamura made his third successful title defense against Minoru Suzuki in a match, which had the added stipulation that Nakamura would have had to join Suzuki-gun had he lost the title. Post-match Nakamura nominated Hiroshi Tanahashi as his next challenger, setting up the first title match between the two longtime rivals in over two years. From November 23 to December 7, Nakamura and Tomohiro Ishii took part in the 2013 World Tag League , where they finished with a record of three wins and three losses, with a loss against Togi Makabe and Tomoaki Honma on the final day costing them a spot in the semifinals.

On January 4 , 2014, Nakamura lost the IWGP Intercontinental Championship to Hiroshi Tanahashi in the main event of NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 8 . A rematch between the two took place on February 9 at The New Beginning in Hiroshima and saw Nakamura fail in his attempt to regain the IWGP Intercontinental Championship. Who is Shinsuke Nakamura? Everything you need to know about WWE's 'King of Strong Style'

Japanese sensation widely seen as the next nxt superstar to break through as a wwe competitor..

Since debuting in NXT in 2016, Shinsuke Nakamura has wowed a whole new audience of wrestling fans all all over the world with his remarkable skill and unstoppable charisma. He's dominated the landscape of NXT, winning several titles and suffering few losses.

Nakamura's career is on the rise, and 2017 looks like it's going to be another great year for the Japanese sensation. Before he joins the main roster on Raw or SmackDown – which is apparently happening in the very near future according to reports – here's everything you need to know about 'The King of Strong Style' Shinsuke Nakamura.

Shinsuke Nakamura Fact File

  • Real name: Shinsuke Nakamura
  • Date of birth: February 24, 1980
  • Hometown: Mineyama, Kyoto, Japan
  • Height: 6'2
  • Weight: 229lbs
  • Theme tune: "The Rising Sun" by CFO$
  • Family: Married Harumi Maekawa in 2007

Who is Shinsuke Nakamura?

Shinsuke Nakamura grew up in a small town in Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. He said on the Talk is Jericho podcast in 2016 that when it came to his wrestling fandom, he was a "maniac". However, he lived in a rural area and it was difficult for him to view matches in person. He lived five hours away from Tokyo and couldn't even watch wrestling on his local TV channels. Instead, he'd grab every wrestling magazine and tape he could whenever he was in the city.

He made his professional wrestling debut in August 2002 as part of New Japan Pro Wrestling. Key figures at that company saw him as a top prospect due to his skill, speed and strength. He even earned the nickname 'Super Rookie' due to his potential.

Nakamura quickly rose to the top of the ranks in New Japan. A little over a year after his debut, he captured the top prize in the company: the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. Nakamura is the youngest champion in the title's history – he was just 23 years and nine months old when he won it. However, he was forced to vacate the championship after only two months due to injury.

In 2009, Nakamura founded the Chaos stable with the aim of resurrecting the 'strong style' form of professional wrestling, which he felt was evaporating from New Japan. Strong style typically features hard strikes drawn from martial arts and numerous submission holds in an attempt to present wrestling as more of a legitimate athletic competition. Nakamura's mastery of the technique led to him adopting the nickname 'The King of Strong Style'.

Nakamura's complete embrace of strong style – allied with his undeniable charisma and a Michael Jackson-inspired character – propelled him to new heights and a new stage of his career in North America. He signed with WWE in early 2016 and joined the NXT brand. His first WWE match was at WrestleMania weekend at NXT TakeOver: Dallas, when he faced Sami Zayn in a match of the year candidate.

Nakamura quickly found success in WWE, twice capturing the NXT Championship in his first year. He is scheduled to challenge Bobby Roode or Kassius Ohno for the title at NXT TakeOver: Orlando on April 1, after which rumors suggest he will join the main WWE roster.

What are Shinsuke Nakamura's career highlights?

- Tokyo Sports named Nakamura its 2003 rookie of the year

- Nakamura defeated Hiroyoshi Tenzan in December 2003 to become IWGP Heavyweight Champion, the first of his three reigns with the title.

- His other New Japan titles include a record five IWGP Intercontinental Championships and an IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Championship with long-time rival Hiroshi Tanahashi.

- Nakamura won the G1 Climax tournament in 2011 and the G1 Tag League in 2006 with Masahiro Chono. He's also a New Japan Cup winner, taking that trophy in 2014.

- Readers of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter named Nakamura wrestler of the year in 2014. The newsletter's founder and editor, Dave Meltzer, has awarded two of Nakamura's matches from 2015 a coveted, rare five-star rating: an IWGP Intercontinental title defense against Kota Ibushi at Wrestle Kingdom 9 in January and a G1 Climax finals match with Tanahashi in August.

- Pro Wrestling Illustrated named Nakamura the most popular wrestler of the year in 2016 after he captivated NXT audiences all over the planet.

- Nakamura is the second-ever two-time NXT champion, and won two NXT year-end awards, as voted for by fans: male competitor of the year and overall male competitor of the year.

What is Shinsuke Nakamura's MMA record?

Many wrestling fans may not know that Nakamura used to compete in mixed martial arts. While competing as a rookie in New Japan, he also forged a path in MMA.

He had his first fight on December 31, 2002, but lost to Daniel Gracie via submission. He beat Jan Nortje and Shane Eitner via submission in 2003 before a match with Alexey Ignashov that was ruled a no contest. Nakamura defeated Ignashov via submission in their May 2004 rematch, which was also Nakamura's final MMA bout to date.

Overall, Nakamura holds a 3-1 MMA record.

What is Shinsuke Nakamura's finisher?

Since 2009, when Nakamura truly embraced the art of strong style, he has used several variations of a devastating knee strike as his finishing move. It's typically performed as a running strike to a standing opponent, though he has frequently used it while his adversary is in a seated or kneeling position as well.

Nakamura called the move Boma Ye while competing in New Japan and Ring of Honor. The name has its origins in the legendary Rumble in the Jungle clash between boxing legends Muhammad Ali and George Foreman. The pro-Ali partisan crowd chanted "Ali, boma ye" throughout.

Two years later, Ali competed against New Japan legend and Nakamura mentor Antonio Inoki in a fight akin to a mixed martial arts bout. Afterwards, Inoki adopted the "boma ye" chant and Nakamura ultimately named the move for him.

However, "boma ye" is Lingala for "kill him", a sentiment that wouldn't exactly fly in the family-friendly WWE environment. In NXT, Nakamura started using the name Kinshasa for the knee strike. Kinshasa is the capital city of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and was the location for the Rumble in the Jungle. WWE fans might know it better for the way commentator Corey Graves screamed the name when Nakamura hit the move.

Before the Boma Ye/Kinshasa, Nakamura used the Landslide, a Samoan driver, as his finishing move. He also frequently used a triangle choke, likely an homage to his days in mixed martial arts.

What is Shinsuke Nakamura's theme song?

Since joining WWE, Nakamura has made his entrance to "The Rising Sun", created for him by WWE's music team CFO$. The song opens with a heavy guitar riff and marries a Japanese-style violin melody with a rapid electronic drum beat. "The Rising Sun" proved an immediate hit with fans, who sing along with the violin track whenever Nakamura enters an arena.

Nakamura has had some memorable entrances using the song including at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn II, when violinist Lee England Jr. played "The Rising Sun" live and at NXT TakeOver: Toronto, when several violin players accompanied him to the ring. The song is a critical part of his magnetic entrance, which he concludes by grabbing the top rope and throwing back his arm while crumpling to the canvas.

What did Shinsuke Nakamura learn from Michael Jackson?

Nakamura has never hidden the fact he's an enormous fan of Michael Jackson. He takes a great deal of inspiration from the 'King of Pop', perhaps most obviously in the form of the red leather jacket he wears in his ring entrance.

However, Jackson influenced Nakamura in another way: through his movement. Nakamura said on the Talk is Jericho podcast that he always considered Jackson a martial artist because of his technical ability and the way he used movement and balance.

Though Nakamura thinks many dancers do too much, making it hard to understand all of their movements. That's a view Nakamura carries into wrestling, where he thinks a lot of competitors do too much in their matches, making it difficult for fans to understand and follow the stories they're trying to tell. He said Jackson showed how him how important it was not to overdo it and that it was possible to make more of an impact through keeping things simple.

By the way, his favourite Michael Jackson song is "Human Nature".

Shinsuke Nakamura

What has Shinsuke Nakamura done outside of wrestling?

While Nakamura has made wrestling his life, seemingly to the exclusion of almost everything else, he has made some other intriguing media appearances.

When Pharrell Williams released his massive hit single, "Happy", he created a number of music videos for different markets around the world. The one he released in Japan included a certain 'King of Strong Style'.

Nakamura and fellow New Japan Pro Wrestling star Kazuchika Okada both featured in the video. If you've ever seen a GIF of a dancing Nakamura wearing his red jacket and title belt with no shirt underneath against a white background, that's where it's from. Since wrestlers are frequently treated as mainstream celebrities in Japan, the New Japan icons were seen as ideal figures to help promote the song there.

What are some interesting facts about Shinsuke Nakamura?

- Shinsuke loves to surf. He often shares photos of himself hitting the waves on his Twitter and Instagram profiles.

In an interview with Sports Illustrated , he said ""I am a ten-minute walk from the beach in my house in Japan, but in Orlando, I'm a one-hour drive from the beach. I could go surfing every day, so that's a big problem for me."

- Nakamura was once roommates with SmackDown General Manager and former WWE Champion Daniel Bryan. The pair lived together while Nakamura trained in both MMA and wrestling at the Inoki Dojo in California early in his career. They shared a two-bedroom apartment with another MMA fighter.

- After moving to the United States to work in WWE, Nakamura watched Sesame Street to help improve his English, knowing that being able to communicate clearly with the audience is an important trait for top wrestlers in WWE.

- Nakamura is friends with fellow WWE superstars Finn Balor, Samoa Joe, and Daniel Bryan as well as NXT head trainer Matt Bloom and former New Japan colleague Kazuchika Okada.

- His favorite drink is red wine.

- As well as Michael Jackson, Nakamura counts Bruce Lee, Freddie Mercury, Jackie Chan and Jushin "Thunder" Liger among his idols. His favourite Queen track is "Bicycle".

- While he was a fan of wrestling while growing up, Nakamura was not a proponent of WWE at the time, instead preferring to focus his interest on Japanese wrestling.

In an interview with Channel Guide Magazine, he said, ""Japan had a huge wrestling culture. So I was not really a fan of WWE as a child. It was much different than the Japanese style before. We had foreign wrestlers who came from America, Europe. Everyone from all over also ended up going to WWE. I did like Andre the Giant. I can't imagine what it would be like to fight with him. I want to fight like him."

The WWE Universe might be used to seeing Nakamura as a mid-card performer, but NJPW was the birthplace of the King of Strong Style, and here are ten things WWE fans should know about Shinsuke Nakamura's time in New Japan Pro Wrestling.

10 Made His Debut in 2002

Shinsuke Nakamura made his pro wrestling debut at the age of 22 at the NJPW Cross Road event on 29 August 2002. He showcased a unique combination of strength, speed, and technical skills during his early days in NJPW, which earned him the admiration of both the promotion's top officials and the fans.

With his gutsy performances, Shinsuke Nakamura earned himself the name Super Rookie. Alongside fellow rookies in Hiroshi Tanahashi and Katsuyori Shibata, Nakamura became one of the New Three Musketeers in NJPW. He also trained in MMA during his early days in NJPW, had five fights between December 2002 and May 2004 and has a career record of 3-1-1.

9 He's The Youngest IWGP Heavyweight Champion

Shinsuke Nakamura didn't take too long to cement his legacy in New Japan Pro Wrestling history as he went on to become the youngest IWGP Heavyweight Champion in history. He defeated Hiroyoshi Tenzan at the 2003 NJPW Battle Final event to win the IWGP Heavyweight Championship and was only 23 years old when he accomplished the feat.

He also unified the title with the National Wrestling Federation Heavyweight Championship by defeating Yoshihiro Takayama at the 2004 NJPW Wrestling World Event. However, he couldn't hold on to the titles for long as injuries forced him to vacate the title a month later.

8 Led Several Factions

In September 2006, Shinsuke Nakamura joined Masahiro Chono's Black New Japan faction. The prime motto of the group was to take over NJPW with Chono as the President and Nakamura as the "Ace." Nakamura was part of the group until he got injured in the semi-final of the 2007 G1 Climax tournament, which took him out for several months. Following his return in November 2007, Nakamura took over the leadership of the group from Chono and reformed it under the new name Rise.

However, Nakamura turned heel in April 2009 and left Rise to create another faction named Chaos. Nakamura led the group until 2016 before leaving for WWE.

7 Credited As The Greatest IWGP Intercontinental Champion

After NJPW introduced the IWGP Intercontinental Championship in 2011, MVP became the inaugural champion after winning a tournament. However, the title remained an unimportant mid-card title throughout MVP's run and the following reigns of Masato Tanaka and Hirooki Goto.

Shinsuke Nakamura defeated Goto to win the title for the first time at the NJPW 40th Anniversary Tour Kizuna Road event in July 2012. He raised the importance of the title and held the title for an impressive 313 days. He's held the title five times throughout his time in NJPW, and the fans credit Nakamura to this date as the greatest IWGP Intercontinental Champion of all time.

6 Defeated Kurt Angle In A Championship Unification Match

Shinsuke Nakamura has faced several former and future WWE Superstars throughout his time in NJPW, and one such superstar he competed against was the Olympic Gold Medalist Kurt Angle.

He took on Angle in a championship unification match at the NJPW Circuit 2008 NEW JAPAN ISM event on February 17, 2008. He defeated the WWE Hall of Famer to unify the Inoki Genome Federation's version of the IWGP Heavyweight Championship with his NJPW version of the title. Along with a singles match, Nakamura has also worked together with Kurt Angle in a tag team match against AJ Styles and Hiroshi Tanahashi in a winning effort at the NJPW G1 Climax 2008, Heroes of Supremacy event in August 2008.

5 Worked With Brock Lesnar

Another former WWE Superstar Shinsuke Nakamura worked with in NJPW was the Beast Incarnate Brock Lesnar . After leaving WWE in 2004, Brock Lesnar signed with NJPW and won the IWGP Heavyweight Championship in his debut match in October 2005.

Lesnar's first title defense was against Shinsuke Nakamura at the NJPW Toukon Shidou Chapter I event in January 2006. Despite his best efforts, Nakamura couldn't overcome Brock Lesnar and lost the match. Nakamura and Lesnar also worked as a team at the NJPW Circuit Acceleration event in February 2006 to defeat the team of Akebono and Riki Choshu.

4 Almost Made His WWE Debut In 2006

After working with Brock Lesnar in 2006, Shinsuke Nakamura departed NJPW to go on a learning excursion to improve his wrestling skills. He traveled to Mexico, Brazil, Russia, and the United States. He also became good friends with Brock Lesnar and trained in his personal gym to increase his muscle mass. Then NJPW President Simon Inoki suggested that Nakamura would be loaned to WWE to help him get exposure working in large American shows. Nakamura also competed in Impact Wrestling during the tour.

However, it never came to fruition as NJPW had to call Nakamura back after Brock Lesnar left the promotion by holding the IWGP Heavyweight Championship hostage.

3 Had A Fierce Rivalry With Hiroshi Tanahashi

Shinsuke Nakamura and Hiroshi Tanahashi entered New Japan Pro Wrestling at the same time and grew to be two of the top wrestlers for the promotion over the years.

The two wrestlers worked as a team and held the IWGP Tag Team Championships for 323 days between December 2004 and October 2005. However, they went on to be fierce rivals and had some of the highest-rated matches in the promotion's history. Nakamura won his second IWGP Heavyweight Championship from Tanahashi and had several matches with him over the title throughout their time together in NJPW.

2 Won The G1 Climax, G1 Tag League & NJPW Cup Tournaments

During his time in NJPW, Shinsuke Nakamura has competed in the G1 Climax tournament on multiple occasions. He first entered the tournament in 2003 but couldn't go on to win it, and the same trend continued for the next seven years until he finally won the tournament in 2011 by defeating Tetsuya Naito in the final.

He also won the G1 Tag League tournament in 2006 alongside his partner Masahiro Chono by defeating Hiroshi Tanahashi and Koji Kanemoto in the final. Nakamura also won the 2014 New Japan Cup tournament by defeating Davey Boy Smith Jr, Finn Balor, and Minoru Suzuki in the initial rounds before defeating Bad Luck Fale in the final.

1 Has Wrestled 1273 Matches For NJPW

On September 27, Nakamura avenged his G1 loss and defeated Makabe in a decision match to win the IWGP Heavyweight title for a third time. Upon winning the title, Nakamura drew the ire of Antonio Inoki by announcing his plan of wanting to restore the "Strong Style" of New Japan by capturing the original IWGP Heavyweight Championship belt from Inoki to replace the fourth generation title belt held by Nakamura. On October 12, Nakamura successfully defended the title against Shinjiro Otani. On November 8 at Destruction '09, Nakamura successfully defended the title against previous champion Hiroshi Tanahashi . On December 5, Nakamura retained the title by defeating Yuji Nagata. On January 4, 2010 at Wrestle Kingdom IV in Tokyo Dome, Nakamura successfully defended the IWGP Heavyweight Championship against Yoshihiro Takayama in a rematch of their 2004 Tokyo Dome title unification bout. After defeating Takayama, Nakamura was challenged by Manabu Nakanishi, whom he would pin on February 14 at New Japan's ISM show in Sumo Hall, making his fifth defense. On April 4, Nakamura made his sixth successful title defense against the 2010 New Japan Cup winner and former teammate Hirooki Goto and afterwards accepted Togi Makabe's challenge for the title. On May 3 at Wrestling Dontaku 2010, Nakamura lost the IWGP Heavyweight Championship to Makabe. Following the loss, Nakamura was sidelined with a shoulder injury until he returned on June 19 at Dominion 6.19, defeating Daniel Puder . Atsushi Sawada and Simon Inoki of IGF appeared at the show and seemed to eye up Nakamura after the match. On July 19, Nakamura received a rematch for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship, but he was once again defeated by Makabe. The following month, Nakamura entered the 2010 G1 Climax, where he won four out of his seven-round robin stage matches, including one over eventual winner Satoshi Kojima, leading his block heading to the final day, where he wrestled Pro Wrestling Noah's Go Shiozaki to a 30-minute time limit draw and thus missed the finals of the tournament by a single point. The draw with Shiozaki led to a no time limit match at a Pro Wrestling Noah show on August 22, where Nakamura was defeated. Despite losing to Goto in a number one contender's match on October 11, Nakamura was hand-picked by new IWGP Heavyweight Champion Satoshi Kojima as his first challenger. The title match took place on December 11 and ended with Nakamura losing.

On September 5, Nakamura and RISE stablemate Hirooki Goto unsuccessfully challenged Togi Makabe and Toru Yano for the IWGP Tag Team Championship. Immediately after the match, the duo were attacked by Giant Bernard, Rick Fuller and the returning Low Ki, who had just left RISE to join Makabe's GBH faction. On February 15, 2009, Nakamura faced Tanahashi for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship, but he failed to regain the title.

In April 2009, Nakamura turned into a villain, siding with the former members of GBH (especially Toru Yano) in a feud against Togi Makabe and Tomoaki Honma. This new group was soon named Chaos with Nakamura as their leader. Nakamura began to work a much rougher style, using a lot of knees and continuing to use a straight right hand as a frequent move in addition to the Bomaye (renamed Kinshasa in WWE), his new finisher. It was the Bomaye that took him to the finals of the 2009 G1 Climax, where he lost to Makabe. Prior to the final, Nakamura had gone undefeated, winning each match with the Bomaye. The move was also credited for fracturing IWGP Heavyweight Champion Hiroshi Tanahashi's orbital bone in the semi-finals of the G1, which forced Tanahashi to vacate the title later that month.

On January 4, 2008, Nakamura defeated his rival Tanahashi in the main event of Wrestle Kingdom II in Tokyo Dome, winning the IWGP Heavyweight Championship for the second time. On February 17, Nakamura defeated Kurt Angle to win the IGF version of the IWGP Heavyweight Championship, unifying it with his own NJPW version of the title. He lost the IWGP Heavyweight Championship to All Japan Pro Wrestling (AJPW) representative Keiji Mutoh in Osaka on April 27.

On January 28, 2008, Nakamura defeated Elix Skipper in a match taped for TNA Xplosion.

On September 24, Nakamura made his long-awaited return to New Japan, joining Masahiro Chono's Black New Japan faction, which had the goal of reforming New Japan with Chono as the president and Nakamura as the "ace". Nakamura had greatly improved his muscular mass during his overseas training and also debuted a new finisher, called the Landslide. On December 10, Nakamura was unable to win the IWGP Heavyweight Championship from then-champion Tanahashi and was again unsuccessful on January 4, 2007 at the Wrestle Kingdom in Tokyo Dome show, where he lost to Toshiaki Kawada. Nakamura entered the 2007 G1 Climax tournament, where he reached the semi-finals before dislocating his shoulder. The injury sidelined Nakamura for months, but he made his return on November 11 and took over the leadership of Black New Japan from Chono and reformed the faction under the new name RISE. The faction originally consisted of himself, Minoru, Milano Collection A.T. , Hirooki Goto , Giant Bernard, Travis Tomko and Prince Devitt. Low Ki was later added to the stable after Milano was injured, having impressed Nakamura during an appearance when he was still with Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA). On December 9, Nakamura defeated Togi Makabe to earn an IWGP Heavyweight Championship match at the following month's Tokyo Dome show.

Nakamura challenged Brock Lesnar for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship on January 4, 2006 at Toukon Shidou Chapter 1, but he lost. In March 2006, Nakamura announced that he would depart on a learning excursion in order to further improve his wrestling skills. Among other things, he would travel to Mexico, Brazil and Russia as well as train with Lesnar at Lesnar's personal gym in order to gain muscle mass. NJPW President Simon Inoki later suggested that as part of his learning excursion, Nakamura would be loaned to World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) to gain experience in working large American shows. However, it proved to be mostly speculation and never came to pass as Nakamura was urgently needed back in New Japan due to Lesnar's departure.

Upon his return, Nakamura received a shot at the title, now held by Bob Sapp, but he was defeated by the defending champion on May 3. Later that month, Nakamura competed in his last MMA fight, defeating Alexey Ignashov with a forearm choke on May 22. On December 11, Nakamura and his tag team partner Hiroshi Tanahashi defeated Kensuke Sasaki and Minoru Suzuki in a decision match to win the IWGP Tag Team Championship. On January 4, 2005 at Toukon Festival: Wrestling World 2005, Nakamura defeated his own tag team partner to win the IWGP U-30 Openweight Championship. During their tag team title reign, the two left for an excursion to Mexico, where they feuded with Los Guerreros del Infierno and defended the IWGP Tag Team Championship against Rey Bucanero and Olímpico. On October 30, they lost the IWGP Tag Team Championship to Cho-Ten (Hiroyoshi Tenzan and Masahiro Chono).

Nakamura joined NJPW in March 2002 and quickly began making a name for himself as a bright prospect for the company. Having earned the nickname "Super Rookie", Nakamura impressed both NJPW officials and fans with an excellent combination of strength, speed, and technical skill. Alongside fellow rookies Hiroshi Tanahashi and Katsuyori Shibata , Nakamura became known as one of the "new Three Musketeers". Nakamura began training vale tudo and on December 31 made his mixed martial arts debut in a fight, where he was defeated by Daniel Gracie via submission to an armlock. Nakamura's second MMA fight took place on May 2, 2003, when he defeated Jan Nortje with a guillotine choke. He followed that up on September 13 with another submission victory over Shane Eitner in his third MMA fight. On December 9, Nakamura defeated Hiroyoshi Tenzan for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship, thus becoming the youngest wrestler in history to win the title. On January 4, 2004 at Wrestling World 2004, Nakamura successfully defended the IWGP Heavyweight Championship against the NWF Heavyweight Champion Yoshihiro Takayama in a title unification match. However, Nakamura was forced to vacate the title due to an injury just a month later.

Nakamura resides in Orlando, Florida. He enjoys surfing and has been doing so since 2003. Nakamura is married.
