Ielts writing task 1 – water use worldwide and consumption.

The Line graph and table chart below give information about water use worldwide and water consumption in two different countries.

Water use worldwide and consumption in two different countries

( 176 Words , 9 Sentences, 4 Paragraphs, Band 9)

The charts compare the amount of water used for agriculture, industry and homes around the world, and water use in Brazil and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

It is clear that global water needs rose significantly between 1900 and 2000, and that agriculture accounted for the largest proportion of water used. We can also see that water consumption was considerably higher in Brazil than in the Congo.

In 1900, around 500km³ of water was used by the agriculture sector worldwide. The figures for industrial and domestic water consumption stood at around one fifth of that amount. By 2000, global water use for agriculture had increased to around 3000km³, industrial water use had risen to just under half that amount, and domestic consumption had reached approximately 500km³.

In the year 2000, the populations of Brazil and the Congo were 176 million and 5.2 million respectively. Water consumption per person in Brazil, at 359m³, was much higher than that in the Congo, at only 8m³, and this could be explained by the fact that Brazil had 265 times more irrigated land.

Bar chart and pie chart describing Australian water consumption (from IELTS High Scorer's Choice series, Academic Set 1 book)

Sample Band 9 Report

The bar chart shows the average Australian water consumption in selected cities for last year, while the pie chart shows how water was used in Australia for last year.

It can clearly be seen that water supply affected most of the key parts of Australian life and industry, but the most severely affected sector in a shortage would be agriculture.

The highest water consumer was the city of Perth with 300 kilolitres per property as an annual average. It was followed by Brisbane and Adelaide, where properties used 250 and about 240 kilolitres a year on average. In Sydney households consumed 200 kilolitres of water annually, and the smallest yearly average consumption was recorded in Melbourne and Canberra, about 150 and 140 kilolitres per property respectively.

Among industries, the largest water user in Australia last year was agriculture, which took up over two thirds of usage at 67%. The next largest usage was by households (9%), water supply, sewage and drainage (7%) and water used for electricity and gas supply (7%). The rest was used by manufacturing (4%), other industries (4%) and mining (2%).

Why does the person state ”…the most severely affected sector in a shortage would be agriculture.”? The question or the chart never talks about any shortage of water.

This is just another way to say that agriculture uses a lot of water. Water is a finite resource and these charts describe its allocation to various industries. For some industries, such as agriculture, water crucial, and their usage reflects it.

SAMPLE ANSWER BAND 8

The diagrams illustrate how the water supply system in Australia currently works and the plan for future changes.

Overall, the most noticeable change in the future water supply system is the recycling process of water for use in the city.

Looking at the present water supply system plan, pure water is stored in a dam before being transferred to a city to be used by households, shops and factories. From the city, storm water goes straight into the river whereas waste water is sent to the water treatment plant. After being processed, it is safe to be released into the river.

Regarding the future water supply system, it can be seen that the storage of pure water in the dam and its usage in the city are planned to remain unchanged. However, both storm water and waste water from the city will be directly pumped to the water treatment plant for processing. After that, they will both be recycled back for use in the city. Also, there will be no water released into the river.

water usage in Australia

ielts essay task 1 water usage australia

The two charts relate to different aspects of water usage in Australia. Chart A provides an overview of how water is used generally, whereas chart B gives a breakdown of household water usage.

From the bar chart we can see that a slightly higher percentage of water goes on irrigation than on urban usage, 45 per cent in fact, while the proportion of water used in industry, approximately 10 per cent, is far smaller than in either of these other areas.

From chart B we can see that the biggest proportion is on Gardens/swimming pools, more than 50%. Personal Hygiene comes in second place, which is nearly a third of the previous one percentage and the same as the total of the remaining three purposes. The other usages are for Drinking/cooking, Washing clothes and other purposes in which the proportion of Drinking/cooking and other purposes are almost the same and both proportions all together are the same as that of Washing clothes.
