Candidates should hold a Bachelor's degree and display little to no professional experience. The program values students who are ambitious, motivated, and capable of making a significant impact in the business world, regardless of their professional experience.

Applicants need to submit Essays and HEC Paris MIM GMAT , GRE, or TAGE MAGE score. The essays are a crucial part of the application, providing insight into the candidate's motivations and aspirations. There is no minimum GMAT score requirement, but scores help assess quantitative and verbal skills

HEC Paris 2023–2024 Essay Tips

Why are you applying to the hec mba program now what is the professional objective that will guide your career choice after your mba, and how will the hec mba contribute to the achievement of this objective (500 words maximum).

Your essay response to this prompt will include several key factors of a traditional personal statement: what your overarching post-MBA career goal is, why you need an MBA to be successful, why you need the degree at this point on your professional path, and why the school you are applying to is the right one for you. To craft an effective essay response, you will need to accomplish a few things (though not necessarily in the order we list them here). One, present your post-MBA career objectives—ideally, both your short- and long-term goals, making the connection between them clear. Two, explain why an MBA is the crucial factor in your being able to attain your objectives. A good way to frame this argument is by noting the skills and experiences you need to develop via the MBA experience to be successful in your desired role/industry (thereby demonstrating your understanding of what will be required of you). Three, clarify what makes now the right time for you to earn this degree. And four, identify the resources and opportunities HEC offers that will allow you to gain the abilities and exposure you currently lack. We explain these concepts and how to achieve them in more detail in our mbaMission Personal Statement Guide , which is available free of charge. Download your complimentary copy today!

What do you consider your most significant life achievement? (250 words maximum)

Your response to this straightforward prompt should be equally straightforward. Simply present and describe the accomplishment, taking care to avoid bragging. As for which anecdote you should share, we have to ask, “Well, what are you most proud of?” Rest assured that this is not some kind of test in which the admissions committee is waiting to see if you pick the “right” one. The school does not “like” certain types of achievements and dislike others. The particular achievement you choose to describe is not actually the point here. Instead, it is meant as an avenue through which you can create and convey an impression of yourself.

To ensure that you write a compelling essay response, use a narrative approach to illustrate how you achieved your goal. If you write, for example, something like “My proudest achievement was completing the Kona Ironman Triathlon,” your story has (unfortunately) both started and finished in the very first sentence. Keeping it going from there and holding your reader’s attention would be quite difficult. Instead, let your story develop by taking your reader step by step through each part, describing how you were able to achieve what you did. Because our greatest accomplishments are often hard won, your account will ideally involve a clear conflict or challenge—otherwise, anyone could have done what you did, and that would lessen the impact of your story.

Although the school does not ask you to explain why this chosen achievement is so significant for you, this is an important element of the story, so you should share this information briefly. Doing so will round out the story for the admissions committee and provide useful insight into your character and values, which can help set you apart from other applicants. Consider clarifying what has changed about you since the achievement or what you have chosen to pursue or not pursue as a result. Perhaps touch on how your life, your personal philosophy, or the way you prioritize things is different than it was before your accomplishment. Reflect thoroughly on this aspect of the situation so that you can convey this element of your story clearly and succinctly.

Leadership and ethics are inevitably intertwined in the business world. Describe a situation in which you have dealt with these issues and how they have influenced you. (250 words maximum)

Ethics is an important part of business today and an integral element of an MBA education, so we are not surprised that the HEC admissions committee wants to get a basic understanding of applicants’ firsthand experience with—and views on—the subject. When ethics are at the core of a situation, the decisions or moves to be made are not immediately obvious, or at a minimum, not unanimously agreed upon, so some degree of courage and value judgment is required. Perhaps you had to deal with the ethical (or unethical) actions and motivations of a leader with whom you worked, or maybe you were the leader in the situation and had to grapple with an ethical decision of some kind. The school does not stipulate that you must have been the person tasked with making the call, so be sure to consider all your options to identify the story that was truly the most affecting for you. HEC wants to understand your view on how these kinds of issues should be approached and navigated in a professional context. Take care not to blame or shame anyone in your story, and likewise, avoid coming across as sanctimonious. You want to demonstrate that in such situations, you are realistic, measured, rational, and thoughtful.

Do not focus too much on describing the situation and forget to explain the effect and influence the experience had on you. This is arguably the most important part of this essay. HEC wants to see not only how and what you learn from challenging situations in general but also how the specific incident you describe has helped shape the kind of ethical leader you will be in the future.

Imagine a life entirely different from the one you now lead, what would it be? (250 words maximum)

We have seen schools pose this kind of question with respect to applicants’ career goals, but HEC has significantly broadened the scope. The key here is demonstrating that you have a genuine understanding of yourself and your current reality. This question has no “right” answer, but whatever you propose has to be credible, so the alternate life you describe needs to make sense and be feasible for you. Basically, the admissions committee wants to understand that you are not rigid and single-minded (the business world requires flexibility, after all, and can certainly be unpredictable) and that you view yourself as multifaceted, with potential and interests in multiple arenas. You can view your skills and qualities from more than one angle and picture yourself in different scenarios and settings. By thoughtfully discussing another probable version of your life, you will demonstrate self-awareness and openness, thereby positioning you as an attractive MBA candidate.

Please choose from one of the following essays (250 words maximum):

A.) what monument or site would you advise a first-time visitor to your country or city to discover, and why.

The HEC community is an extremely diverse one, bringing together individuals from all over the world (92% of the Class of 2024 is international!). This essay prompt allows candidates to highlight something they love or are proud of from where they grew up, thereby shining a bit of a light on their background and character and helping the admissions committee view them more clearly in the context of the diversity they could bring to the student body. Note that the query specifies a “monument” or “site” (so no favorite restaurant or activity), and these are often associated with some sort of historical event or person. Make sure you are fully informed not just about the modern-day perception of the location or monument you wish to highlight but also about its background and that of anyone it might commemorate, so that your choice is true to your character and beliefs and reflects back on you the way you want it to.

b) Certain books, movies or plays have had an international success that you believe to be undeserved. Choose an example and analyse it.

Let us first make one thing very clear—the admissions committee is not using this essay to judge your taste in books, movies, or plays! If your opinion happens to be the complete opposite of that of your admissions reader, this is not going to be a problem or negatively affect your chances of being accepted. Like all other business school essay questions, this one has no “right” answer, so do not worry about potentially choosing the “wrong” piece of art to discuss. The admissions committee wants to see evidence of original, critical thought and to get an idea of how you might stand out from the pack. When much of the world zigs , you zag , but why? How do you view things that is different from the norm? Try to pinpoint a play, movie, or book that will allow you to discuss something you believe is truly pivotal or especially interesting about your personality and/or world view, so that you have the best chance of leaving a meaningful impression on the admissions reader.

c) What figure do you most admire and why? You may choose from any field (arts, literature, politics, business, etc).

Here, the admissions committee wants to know which values and strengths you believe are commendable, impressive, honorable, deserving of respect, and/or worthy of emulating and also why you view them as such. Before we address how you should approach this essay, though, we want to point out a few things you should not do. First, avoid choosing any individuals who would come across as obvious or clichĂ©, such as Steve Jobs or Barack Obama. Second, like all application essay questions, this one does not have a “right” answer, so do not spend any time or effort trying to guess who the admissions committee wants or expects you to pick. And third, resist the urge to choose a parent, grandparent, or other close relative, unless the person in question really has something distinctly and obviously special to offer.

Authenticity is key to your success with this essay, so start by thinking of people who really do inspire and appeal to you—who elicit a strong response from you in some key way. Then identify the qualities in these figures that resonate the most with you and describe what kind of feeling these qualities elicit (thereby illustrating the why). Although you will be discussing another person, the aspects of your chosen figure that you highlight will help convey to the HEC admissions committee who you are.

Is there any additional information you would like to share with us? (900 words max)

With this prompt—and its generous word count, compared to that of the school’s required essays—HEC is acknowledging that some candidates have aspects of their profiles that might need a little special clarification. This essay is therefore your opportunity—if needed—to address any lingering questions that an admissions officer might have about your candidacy, such as a low GRE or GMAT score, a legal or disciplinary incident, or a gap in your academic or professional record. The other condition under which you might want to submit an essay here is if you have something in your candidacy (not already covered elsewhere in your application) that would help you stand out and/or contribute in a special way to the HEC community—perhaps a unique background, skill, experience, or accomplishment. If you do not feel that the school’s required essays allow you to share enough about yourself and your story for the admissions committee to evaluate you fully and fairly, this would be your chance to fill in the missing pieces.

Keep in mind, however, that by submitting an optional essay, you are requiring the already overtaxed admissions readers to do additional work on your application, so do not rush to fill this space just because you fear that not doing so will somehow count against you (it will not), and also avoid being overly verbose or sharing more information than is truly necessary just because you technically can. Focus on being direct and succinct so that you convey your intended information without placing undue burden on the admissions readers.

If you feel you might have a valid reason for submitting this additional essay or are not sure whether the issue you are considering would warrant doing so, we encourage you to download a free copy of our mbaMission Optional Essays Guide , in which we offer detailed advice on when and how to take advantage of the optional essay, along with multiple sample essays.

UPDATE : This article was originally posted on March 16, 2020. It has been updated with 2023/24 information and tips below.

Located in one of the world’s hubs for luxury goods, HEC Paris, with two intakes each year, is one of the most sought-after MBA programs for international applicants – especially after securing a #11 spot in the Financial Times’ 2022 Global MBA ranking.

However, with options to add a finance certificate or do a double degree MBA with any of a number of global partner schools competition to join HEC’s elite MBA is more difficult than ever.

That’s why we’ve prepared this guide to help you use your HEC Paris interview to stand out. We’ve rounded up not only our best tips but have also included sample interview mocks to ensure you give your HEC interview your best shot.

Making sure you shine during your HEC interview is no easy task.

HEC interviews are slightly unusual as, in addition to the usual questions probing your career development, goals, reasons for doing an MBA, and interest in the HEC program, the interview also includes a presentation question.

For the presentation question, students are expected to prepare a 10-minute PowerPoint on the topic of their choosing. During the interview, the alumni interviewer can ask the applicant to give their presentation at any time. There are generally few, if any, follow-up questions.

Our clients who have interviewed with HEC in the past say that the interviewer was very friendly and demonstrated a genuine interest in their answers . Though questions do tend to focus on standard MBA interview questions, be ready for anything.

Who will interview you?

You will interview with two members of HEC’s alumni community, each in a separate interview.

If you and your interviewer opt to conduct these interviews online, this will not negatively impact your application in any way.

Will the interviewer have read my application?

The HEC Paris interview is blind, meaning the interviewer will only have access to your CV. This means that you can repeat examples from your essays if you choose to.

How long will the HEC interview last?

45-60 minutes.

“Our MBA students are not only team players. They are individuals who can inspire their colleagues to do their best work. They are ambitious and motivated individuals who want to make a positive and lasting contribution to any organization they serve.” HEC Admissions

Every year, HEC Paris searches the globe for outstanding professionals given the honor of joining each class (HEC has two intakes per year), each of around 350 students. With a strong emphasis on diversity, there is no “typical” HEC student, yet the average admitted student for the Class of 2023 (the last year for which official data is available) had a 690 average GMAT score and 6 years of work experience.

Beyond the impressive statistics, though, HEC is looking for candidates who want to make a positive impact on the world through their careers. That’s why, in addition to strong academic performance (demonstrated through the GMAT and university grades), HEC seeks candidates who possess the following qualities:

Leadership Potential

You should be able to share instances where you have excelled as a leader in your personal or professional life.

International Exposure

Our HEC Paris MBA students are globally-minded. You must be a well-rounded individual, able to adapt to different cultures from all over the world and collaborate with people of different backgrounds. You must have a good understanding of cultural differences, as well as be ready to share your knowledge and experience with others.

Interpersonal Skills and Personality

We value passion, humility, individuality and respect for others. You must be able to lead as well as collaborate within a team.

Though no interview is 100% predictable, HEC interviews do tend to center around a fairly standard list of MBA interview questions. As such, we have prepared some model questions below that previous candidates have received in their past HEC interviews.

SAMPLE HEC INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

The questions below are drawn from our clients’ interview reports, as well as from sites like clearadmit.com . Though these are not all the potential questions you could possibly receive during your HEC interview, preparing for these (and any follow-up questions you think you might be asked) should give you a very solid foundation for your interview.

STARTING UP QUESTIONS

  • Tell me about yourself. (Expect follow-up questions)
  • What do you do in your current job?
  • What was your undergraduate experience like?
  • What do you like to do in your free time?
  • What are your short-term and long-term career goals?
  • Name three firms you would like to work at after your MBA.
  • Why did you quit your previous job?
  • Why do you want an MBA?
  • What will you contribute to HEC?
  • What other schools have you applied to? If you get into all of them, how will you choose where to go?
  • Have you visited campus? Spoken with alumni?
  • Do you plan to stay in Europe after graduation?

LEADERSHIP & TEAMWORK

  • Tell me about a time when you didn’t get along with your team. What did you do?
  • Tell me about one instance when you disagreed with your boss and how you handled the situation
  • What is your leadership style?

MISCELLANEOUS BEHAVIORAL

  • Tell me an example of when things didn’t work out as you planned.
  • Tell me about a time when you were pushed to your limits at work.
  • How would your friends describe you?
  • What are your strengths and weaknesses?
  • What/who has been the greatest influence on your career thus far?
  • Which accomplishment are you proudest of?

PRESENTATION QUESTION

  • Why did you choose this topic?
  • Why are you passionate about X topic?
  • Is there anything else you would like us to know about you?
  • Is there anything you wish I had asked you?
  • Questions for me?

We have found that answering real interview questions on the spot is a much better means of preparation than reading lists of interview questions for most candidates.

We highly suggest you take a look at mock interview questions and sample interview responses before your interview .

Our MBA Resource Center has dozens of real interview mocks from HEC Paris, as well as detailed guides to help you prepare for questions ranging from “Why our MBA program?” to “Tell us about a time you failed.”

If you’re still not quite confident with your interview skills, our interview experts can help you craft your answers or prepare you for the HEC Paris interview through mock interviews tailored to your profile.

Despite your most diligent preparation, you will almost always receive a question you had not prepared.

First, stay calm and take a deep breath . You have already made it this far in the process, and one question will not trip you up!

Second, make sure you directly answer the question the interviewer asked you. For example, if the interviewer asks you about a time you had to deal with a difficult manager, make sure to tell a story about a difficult manager and how you handled the situation.

If you’re having trouble thinking of an answer or an example to support your answer , however, take a drink of water to give yourself a few more minutes to think. If you really can’t think of an example from your personal or professional experience, you can use a hypothetical answer about how you would act in a certain situation.

Finally, assume that the interviewer is testing how you think on your feet and respond to questions you didn’t prepare in advance. Though your answer might not be as polished as if you’d had weeks to rehearse it, smile and confidently respond to show you can handle any question they throw at you.

Practice makes perfect!

You have stressed about every aspect of your MBA application, and now you are ready for your interview! With the right preparation, this can be your chance to shine and get a highly-coveted spot at an elite business school.

However, maybe you don’t know where to start in preparing, or maybe you tend to ramble on and lose focus during interviews. Maybe you’ve even downloaded sample questions and written out your answers. The problem is, when you try to apply these templates to your own story, it doesn’t quite work.

Our interview prep focuses on helping you determine how to present yourself during your MBA interview while using appropriate, impact-driven language without being artificial, or worse, robotic.

That’s the approach we took with our client Lorena , who was admitted to HEC Paris. In her words:

“ When I started the process I knew very little about it. Ellin guided me throughout the entire process. Preparing for interviews can be overwhelming, since you must dig deep into your professional and personal life, and she pushed me to show the best I could offer, while also being available, kind, and patient to help me or to clear up any doubt I had. Even when I second-guessed myself, she was there to support me. I‘ll be forever thankful for her and her team’s support in achieving my dream of an MBA. I surely couldn’t have chosen better. It was a pleasure to work with you! ”

Our individual approach is why 98.9% of our clients secure admissions to at least one of their target schools .

Ultimate Guide to the MiM Application: 9 Key Elements to Stand Out and Get In

hec mim essay questions

Do note that while all of these are important, the application is looked at holistically . This means that if you lack or are weak in one or more of these aspects, you can make up for them in other aspects.

As an example, when I was admitted to HEC Paris for the Master in Management Grande École, my academic background wasn’t the strongest (just above average GPA and tier-2 school in India), but I made up for it through my GMAT score (760, 99th percentile), international experiences, and entrepreneurial experiences. I also know other peers of mine at HEC that had the opposite. They had an exceptional academic background that made up for a less-than-exceptional GMAT/GRE score.

So don’t worry if you aren’t exceptional at each and every one of the below areas, or are even quite weak in one or more of them, as long as there are one or more areas that you are highly exceptional in.

Academic Background and Test Scores

Your academic background and test scores play a pivotal role in your HEC Paris MiM application, as they provide a snapshot of your intellectual abilities and dedication to your studies.

A strong academic record

A competitive GPA and a history of rigorous coursework, reflecting your commitment to academic excellence, can make a strong impression on your MiM application.

No matter what we say about grades being important or not, one thing that they do show is commitment and discipline.

You can show this through:

The higher, the better, of course. If your GPA looks or seems a bit unusually low and you have an explanation for it, you can mention that in the “additional information” section of your application.

The courses that you’ve taken

You can find opportunities to mention some of the specific, most impactful courses you’ve taken, and how they are relevant to your current and future goals (with the MiM) in your essays.

For example, it helps a lot to show that you’ve taken business courses, or if you’ve derived business motivation from other courses that you’ve taken. What matters the most is how the courses you took are relevant to what you want to do in the future.

The academic program(s) you studied

The program you studied does make a difference to your application. But what makes an even bigger difference is the story you can tell about the transition between your previous degree(s) and the MiM.

For instance, if you studied engineering and are transitioning to marketing (like me!) — what about your engineering degree is going to help you in marketing? In my case, for example, I wanted to work in marketing for a tech company – so it made sense. What story can you spin?

You can mention this in your essays as well. How will your engineering/arts/business/mathematics/medicine/whatever degree help you in your future career goals? How will you use your experiences to contribute to the MiM program?

The school(s) you studied in

Of course, the more competitive your previous schools were, the more it adds to your application profile. That being said, you can make up for a lack of a “prestigious” school with other aspects of your application like your academic record, work experience, GMAT/GRE score, and others as listed below.

Standardised Test Scores (GMAT/GRE)

Submitting your GMAT or GRE score is essential, and you must aim for as high of a score as you can possibly get.

Though there are no GMAT average or median scores published as of 2023, in 2018 the median GMAT score was 710. It is OK if you don’t meet this score as long as you are exceptional at multiple other areas of your application.

However, in order to be safe, I would recommend a score of 720 or above for top schools like HEC and ESSEC. The higher, the better.

My perception is that the GMAT takes quite a high weightage in your application, so it’s definitely an area to work hard in.

If you want advice on how to prepare for the GMAT, I made a video about how I prepared to get a 760 in the GMAT on my YouTube channel. You can watch it below.

However, my number one recommendation on how to prepare for the GMAT is by using and following Magoosh’s GMAT prep software. That’s what I used to get a 760 in my GMAT, and I definitely credit a lot of my result to it. Check it out here (affiliate link).

Showcasing academic achievements and overcoming weaknesses

When presenting your academic achievements in your application essays, be sure to address any potential gaps or weaknesses, while also highlighting academic awards and honours to showcase your strengths and resilience in the face of challenges.

Make sure that you mention all the relevant awards and honours that you’ve received, and most importantly, showcase how resilient you’ve been — mention any challenges you’ve faced, and how you’ve overcome them.

Top business schools want people that don’t give up — people that build strength through hardships. Sharing real stories of how you’ve been able to do so helps strengthen your case to join top MiM programs like HEC Paris, ESSEC, ESCP and others.

  • Professional Experience and Internships

In addition to a strong academic record, professional experience and internships are vital components of your HEC Paris MiM application. They demonstrate your practical skills and industry knowledge, making you a more attractive candidate for a MiM in Europe.

In the past, HEC Paris had a (kind of) strict restriction of only having 2 years’ professional experience or fewer. However, today I don’t see this restriction on their website anymore.

  • HEC Paris just states “open to high-level applicants with little to no professional experience”.
  • ESSEC states “little or no graduate work experience and are you under 32 years of age”.
  • ESCP states “Previous work experience, mastering additional languages, and international experience are each considered a plus that will support your application.”
  • EDHEC doesn’t mention any professional experience limitation or restriction.
  • INSEAD states “You do not need to have full-time professional experience prior to applying to the programme. However, some experience in a business context will be valued such as an internship or work in a charity/community environment.”

Every school has its own requirement, but in general having 1-3 years of professional experience puts you in the sweet spot for being able to take full advantage of the MiM program.

Importance of relevant work experience for an MiM in Europe

Even though work experience is optional, your work experience shows your understanding of the industry and your ability to apply theoretical knowledge in a real-world setting.

By gaining hands-on experience, you develop practical skills that make you a more valuable asset to potential employers, and this is what the school wants to see as well, because at the end of the day, the school does care a lot about where its students will end up going after.

For this reason, whatever work experience you have, it’s important to be able to draw up a convincing story about why it’s relevant to your goals — or at the minimum, what your experiences made you learn about yourself, which made you pursue the career goals you’re pursuing (even if they’re different from your past experiences).

Leveraging internships and part-time jobs

My first ever professional video shoot as a part-time freelance video creator.

Internships and part-time jobs play a significant role in showcasing your experience and commitment to your career goals, particularly when they are directly or indirectly related to your goals.

When discussing these experiences, emphasise the growth and learning opportunities you've had, highlighting the skills you've acquired and how they relate to the MiM program. Share real stories of your experiences, and how you grew as a result of them.

As an example, when applying for HEC Paris, I mentioned about my part-time freelance work experience as a video editor for a local marketing and advertising agency, and how that links with my future goals of working in marketing.

Transferable skills and leadership potential

An essential aspect of your professional experience is the transferable, soft skills you've developed, such as problem-solving, communication, and teamwork.

Be sure to identify these key skills and provide examples of how you've applied them in the workplace. This is important because it shows the school that you’re someone that is aware of your strengths, and knows how to leverage them to get ahead.

Additionally, highlight any leadership roles you've held, as they demonstrate your ability to take charge and make an impact in your chosen field. For top schools like HEC, leadership potential is highly important. Make sure you highlight yours as well as you can do.

Again, make sure to mention real stories, with real emotions and characters, in your essays about your leadership potential. Talk more about the leadership experiences you’ve had instead of leadership experiences of others that you’ve learnt from.

Your CV or resume

All of your experiences need to go into your CV.

  • Extracurricular Activities and Leadership

Show the value of your extracurricular activities

Participating in extracurricular activities reflects your ability to balance various commitments and develop crucial soft skills. Engaging in such pursuits enhances teamwork, communication, and adaptability, making you a more versatile and attractive candidate for the MiM program.

You want to make sure that you communicate about the different extracurriculars that you’ve participated in. Make sure to include:

  • What activities you did
  • What impact did they have on others
  • What impact did they have on you
  • What skills you built (hard and soft skills) as a result of participating in those activities

Include examples of impactful extracurriculars

hec mim essay questions

Some examples of impactful extracurricular activities include volunteering for a cause you're passionate about and participating in clubs related to your professional interests.

These experiences not only demonstrate your dedication to personal growth but also allow you to develop valuable connections and a broader perspective on the world, which is incredibly useful in the business world.

Moreover, impactful extracurriculars also show how much of a community-minded person you are — how you can contribute back to your community, whether that is a professional or a personal community.

Demonstrate leadership skills and potential

To further strengthen your application, highlight leadership roles you've held within extracurricular activities, such as club president or event coordinator.

These experiences showcase your ability to take initiative, motivate others, and make a positive impact on your community. Don't forget to mention any new projects or events you've initiated, as they further emphasize your leadership potential and commitment to making a difference.

I believe that this is one of the most important things that HEC Paris in particular looks for. You don’t have to show leadership skills just through formal leadership experiences; you can also show them through initiatives that you’ve taken by yourself.

For example, in my essays, I spoke about how I recorded my own music, how I started the video department in the media club on my campus, how I worked as a freelance video editor. I never held any formal leadership positions in college, but these initiatives helped me stand out.

  • International Experiences

Importance of International Experiences in MiM Applications

If there’s one thing that top MiM programs (especially HEC, ESSEC, INSEAD) all want to see, it’s international experiences in your profile.

These programs are international in nature, with students from all over the world, and they prepare you for an international career in which you’ll work with people people from all over the world, and they want to see that you’re ready for such an environment.

International experiences such as the ones listed below enhance your profile by giving you a global mindset, making you more adaptable, and give you unique perspectives — all of which top MiM schools want to see.

Types of International Experiences to Highlight

Standing in front of the river in Lauf, Germany, during a school exchange program.

Study abroad programs

These can include semesters abroad or summer school programs. They can also include attending short language study programs. Having had such experiences can highly impact your admission chances.

When I applied to HEC Paris for the MiM, I had already done the HEC Paris Summer School in luxury management. Since my career goals after the MiM were also in the marketing field, the summer school experience made a lot of sense to my application story. I was also a part of a school exchange program with a German school at age 14. I’m sure both of these experiences added to my application profile greatly.

If you have study abroad programs, you should think about how they impacted you, what they made you realize about yourself or the world, and how they add to your application story in a cohesive way, by aligning with your goals and other experiences.

Internships or work experience in a foreign country

These are equally, if not more impactful than study abroad experiences for admission into top MiM programs.

Just as before, the main objective of doing an MiM program from a top school is to develop an international career. Having had international work experiences beforehand is a great way to show signs of your readiness for a more impactful international career in the future.

Volunteering or community service projects overseas

This is a classic way of showcasing not only your international experiences, mindset and motivation, but also your ability and mindset to contribute back to society.

If you are still in college, there are plenty of associations and opportunities that allow you to do this over the summer. One of them I’ve heard of is AIESEC .

International conferences or competitions

Being invited to, presenting at, or simply attending international conferences or competitions is a high-impact way to showcase not only your international experiences, but also your academic rigour.

Travel experiences

hec mim essay questions

Leisure international travel experiences with your family or friends are also a way to show your international experiences — but the important thing here to talk about what you learnt through those experiences rather than simply what you did.

Emphasizing Cultural Awareness and Adaptability

Navigating different cultural environments can be challenging, but it's also a fantastic opportunity to grow as an individual and broaden your horizons. Showcasing your adaptability and cultural awareness is key to strengthening your MiM at HEC Paris application.

Overcoming cultural challenges

Think about the cultural challenges you faced during your international experiences, and how you successfully overcame them. Perhaps you had to navigate a language barrier, adapt to local customs, or collaborate with people from diverse backgrounds. Reflect on these challenges and share the strategies you used to handle them effectively.

For instance, during my summer school program in France, I initially struggled a lot with connecting with people and with the nuances of European culture. However, by actively engaging in conversations with my classmates, participating in events, and immersing myself in the experience by letting go of some of my inhibitions, I eventually became more comfortable and confident in this new environment.

This helped me a lot when I first came to HEC Paris for my master’s degree.

Gaining cultural insights

International experiences often come with valuable lessons and insights that can shape your personal and professional development. Think about the insights you gained from your time abroad, and how they have influenced your perspective on the world and your career aspirations.

For example, a volunteering experience in Southeast Asia can expose you to the challenges faced by underprivileged communities, and make you realize the importance of social responsibility in business. This insight might broaden your worldview and also influence your career goals by inspiring you to seek opportunities to make a positive impact in the global community.

Remember, when emphasizing your cultural awareness and adaptability, it's crucial to be authentic and showcase how your international experiences have genuinely contributed to your personal growth and prepared you for the MiM program.

Showcasing Language Skills

Language skills are invaluable assets in today's interconnected world, and they can be particularly beneficial for those pursuing an MiM in Europe, due to the diversity of languages in the region. By highlighting your proficiency in foreign languages and the experiences that contributed to your linguistic abilities, you can make your application stand out, and showcase yourself as an ideal candidate for an international MiM program.

Demonstrating language proficiency

If you've learned a foreign language or improved your skills through your international experiences, be sure to emphasize this in your application. Discuss how your language abilities can contribute to your success in the MiM in Europe program and your future career goals.

Language immersion experiences

If you've participated in language immersion programs or taken language courses abroad, be sure to mention these experiences. Discuss the benefits of these programs and how they have improved your language skills.

By showcasing your language skills and the experiences that have contributed to your linguistic abilities, you can demonstrate your readiness to excel in an MiM in Europe program and your potential to thrive in an increasingly globalized world. Remember to be authentic and specific about your language proficiency and the experiences that have shaped your linguistic journey.

Integrating International Experiences in Your Application

Effectively showcasing your international experiences in your MiM in Europe application is essential for making a strong impression on the admissions committee. Highlighting your global mindset and adaptability can help demonstrate your readiness to excel in a diverse, international environment.

Incorporating examples in your personal statement, essays, and CV

When discussing your international experiences, make sure to weave them into your personal statement, essays, and CV in a cohesive and meaningful way. Explain how these experiences have shaped your personal growth and align with your career goals.

For instance, in my application, I mentioned my school exchange program with a German school when I was 13. During this program, I lived with a German family for three weeks, and my German exchange partner stayed with my family in India for the same duration. Through this experience, I gained valuable insights into European culture and developed a deeper appreciation for the diversity of perspectives that exist within the global community.

Aligning your experiences with the MiM in Europe program's values and expectations

When showcasing your international experiences, make sure to align them with the values and expectations of the MiM in Europe program you're applying to. Demonstrate how these experiences have prepared you for the program's academic rigors and cultural diversity.

In my case, I emphasized how my exchange program experience helped me develop a strong foundation for cultural understanding and adaptability, qualities that are essential for success in an MiM in Europe program.

Using recommendation letters to reinforce your international background

Recommendation letters can provide additional credibility to your international experiences. Request letters from supervisors, professors, or mentors who have witnessed your growth and development during your time abroad.

In conclusion, by effectively integrating your international experiences into your MiM in Europe application, you can showcase your global mindset and demonstrate your readiness to succeed in a diverse and international environment.

  • Compelling Essays and Personal Statements

None of your incredible achievements really mean anything to the school if you’re unable to present them in a compelling way through your application essays.

And so, your application essays are arguably the most important part of your application to the MiM.

Firstly, you want to make sure that you’re addressing all of the essay prompts effectively. This means answering exactly the question that is asked (I know it sounds basic, but it’s easy to get distracted and go on a tangent). It also means answering the questions in a way that’s as impactful as possible.

To do that, you want to craft a compelling narrative in the form of a story that flows effectively. You want to make your essays as easy to read as possible, while including all of the relevant information in them.

You can do this by doing the following —

  • First, make sure to understand exactly what you want to include in your essay.
  • Outline the essay with bullet points, making sure it makes sense.
  • Start writing.

I’ve made a video in which I share my 5 top tips for writing application essays. You can watch it below.

I’ve also made a video in which I share and read out my own application essays when I applied to the MiM program at HEC Paris. You can watch that below as well.

  • Strong Letters of Recommendation

Choosing the right recommenders

When applying for an MiM in Europe, selecting the right recommenders can significantly impact your application. The ideal recommenders are those who know you well and can provide a comprehensive and personal account of your abilities and potential.

Professional or academic connections

Your recommenders should ideally be individuals with whom you have established a strong professional or academic relationship. They could be supervisors, managers, professors, or mentors who have witnessed your growth, accomplishments, and work ethic.

For example, when I applied for my MiM program, I asked my former manager from an internship and one of my favorite professors who had taught me in several courses to write recommendation letters. Both of them had a deep understanding of my skills, strengths, and aspirations, which allowed them to provide a detailed and personalized account of my potential as an MiM candidate.

Individuals who know you well

Choose recommenders who have had meaningful interactions with you and can speak to your character, work ethic, and ability to succeed in an MiM in Europe program. A strong recommendation from someone who knows you well is much more valuable than a generic letter from a high-ranking individual with whom you have limited interaction.

Tips for Obtaining Compelling Recommendation Letters

Providing context and guidance.

When requesting a recommendation letter, it's essential to provide your recommenders with context and guidance. Share your resume, transcripts, and a brief overview of your goals for the MiM in Europe program. This information will help them tailor their letters to best support your application.

Giving ample time for writing

Request recommendation letters well in advance of the application deadline. This will give your recommenders enough time to carefully consider their thoughts and craft a well-written, impactful letter.

What to Avoid When Requesting Recommendations

Generic letters.

Avoid requesting letters from individuals who cannot provide a personalized and detailed account of your abilities and potential. Generic letters can be easily spotted by the admissions committee and may not contribute positively to your application.

Last-minute requests

Do not wait until the last minute to request recommendation letters. Not only does this put unnecessary pressure on your recommenders, but it also reduces the likelihood of receiving a thoughtful and well-crafted letter that effectively supports your MiM in Europe application.

  • Language Proficiency

In an increasingly interconnected world, language proficiency is essential for professionals who aspire to succeed in a global business environment. As a candidate for an MiM in Europe, showcasing your language skills in your application can enhance your chances of admission and demonstrate your readiness to thrive in a diverse and international context.

Importance of Language Skills in a Global Business Environment

The greater your language skills, the better you’ll be able to take advantage of your MiM in Europe experience. In Europe especially, the more languages you speak, the greater will be your chances of getting a job, since this is something that companies

English proficiency for non-native speakers

As English is the primary language of instruction for many MiM programs in Europe, non-native speakers are often required to submit TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge, or PTE scores to demonstrate their English proficiency. Meeting or exceeding the minimum score requirements is crucial for ensuring that you can effectively participate in the program and excel in your coursework.

However, you can be exempted from this requirement if you did your undergraduate studies in English. That is at least the case for HEC Paris, and might be the case for other MiM in Europe programs as well.

Additional language skills as a plus

In addition to English proficiency, knowledge of other languages can be a valuable asset in your MiM application. Additional language skills can demonstrate your adaptability and global mindset, which are essential qualities for success in the international business world.

For example, if you’re applying to an MiM program in France, having French language skills is definitely going to be an asset to your application. This is because you’ll be able to leverage more opportunities available to you in France, and schools know this.

Demonstrating Language Proficiency in the Application

Submitting test scores.

Include your English proficiency test scores (TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge, or PTE) in your application, as well as any other relevant language certifications you may have. Make sure to double-check the specific requirements for the MiM in Europe program you are applying to, as some schools may have different score requirements or preferred tests.

Describing relevant experiences

In your application, highlight any experiences that have contributed to your language proficiency. This could include study abroad programs, language courses, or any other experiences that have allowed you to practice and improve your language skills.

For instance, when I applied for my MiM program, I mentioned my summer school experience in France. Even though the program was in English, having been in the French environment for a few weeks provided me with a deeper understanding of French culture and customs.

By showcasing your language and culture proficiency and relevant experiences in your MiM in Europe application, you can demonstrate your readiness to excel in an international environment and your potential to succeed in the global business world — and this is exactly what schools want to see in top applicants.

  • Preparing for the Interview

I’ve described my interview experience in the YouTube video below.

In general, be prepared to talk about your motivations, and answer any question about anything in your essays.

For this reason, I don’t recommend that you lie or fabricate things in your essays, because if you’re asked about them in your interview and they realise that you lied, it’ll be an instant rejection.

A Strong, Cohesive and Clear Application

In the video above, I talk about how you can build a cohesive and strong profile for an MiM in Europe application.

What are your goals for the MiM?

It cannot be understated how important it is to be very clear about your goals post-MiM. Your goals need to be:

  • Clear — this is what you want to do, and this is why.
  • Specific — these are the companies/positions you want to work in.
  • Realistic — this is how you’re well prepared for your goals.

You’ll be expected to detail your professional goals in your application essays. For more guidance on your application essays, you should look at my essay guide .

Ensuring consistency across all application components

This is one of the most important things in your application — making sure that it is consistent across all of your essays, your CV, personal statement, and recommendation letters.

Your story must come out strong and clear — this is why you want to do this specific MiM program , and these are your goals after your graduate.

The best applications are the ones where the admissions jury has a clear understanding of your motivation right from reading and studying the application, and the interview is used to simply verify and get a “vibe-check”.

Proofreading and reviewing your application

This one is a no-brainer. Finish your application before time, so that you can proofread and review it a final time before you submit, so that you can catch obvious errors or mistakes that you’ve made.

In conclusion, here’s what you need to make a strong and compelling case for one of the top MiM programs in Europe, like the one at HEC Paris, ESSEC, ESCP, INSEAD, EDHEC, or others.

  • Academic Background & Test Scores
  • Standardised test scores (GMAT/GRE)
  • A Strong and Cohesive Application

If you found this guide helpful, it would be great if you could pass it on to someone you think might benefit from it as well.

Academic and professional admissions depend on interviews. It helps evaluate candidates’ credentials, talents, and personality. Interviews allow assessors to interact with applicants and make holistic judgements. This crucial step helps institutions to discover the most promising individuals who can succeed in their programmes.

Typical Interview Method:

Interviews usually include numerous steps to evaluate an applicant’s profile. Individuals are shortlisted based on academic records, essays, and recommendation letters. Interviews might be face-to-face, telephonic, or video-based for shortlisted candidates.

The interview assesses an applicant’s topic knowledge, problem-solving, communication, critical thinking, and programme fit. They may ask broad and particular questions to gauge the applicant’s intelligence. Interviewers analyse motivation, personality, and fit with the institution’s ideals in addition to academic ability.

Interview panels use established criteria for fairness and uniformity. Academics, extracurriculars, leadership, and problem-solving may be considered. To evaluate a candidate’s capacity to collaborate, think critically, and solve issues under pressure, interviews may include practical exercises, group discussions, or case studies.

In conclusion, admission interviews help schools find extraordinary people with the talents, qualifications, and personalities to succeed in their programs. The systematic process allows evaluators to make educated selections and choose a varied and skilled group.

I had a fantastic 30-minute interview with the MiM Admissions Committee at HEC Paris. This is all I can remember, and it’s not much.

-Would you mind introducing yourself?

-Explain why you want to earn this particular degree.

-Why Not an MBA?

-Which of these five schools do you plan to attend, and why?

-I was wondering how your French was doing.

-How are you going to get by in France if you don’t know the language?

-Describe a time when you had to step in and mediate a disagreement between coworkers.

-Tell us what you know about the state of the French economy.

-Identify any French companies that you find interesting or to which you aspire.

-Do you have any passion for the Energy sector (or any other sector)? What about the CEO of Areva or EDF?

-Do you have any questions for us? (One final opportunity to leave a positive impression!)

Overall, the interview was relaxed and pleasant, and the interviewer was kind and cordial.

HEC Paris MIM Interview Experience-2

I had a recent conversation with the HEC MIM interviewer. During the interview, I was given a copy of the job description and asked to go through my resume while answering why questions. My profile took around twenty-five minutes, and the rest of the time was spent questioning him about the service. Here is an orderly list of the questions asked during the interview, as best I can remember them.

– Would you mind introducing yourself?

-What are your long-term career goals?

-Explain to me the lesson you learned from a past setback.

-That, on the other hand, was fruitful. Tell me about a time when you completely messed up. Please respond again.

-How about your biggest flaw?

-Tell me about your pre-interview preparations.

-Exactly what challenges does your industry face?

-Is HEC Worth It?

-For what reason France?

-I don’t see why (your country) shouldn’t.

It was a great learning experience for me overall.

HEC Paris MIM Interview Experience-3

I had a conversation with the HEC Paris interviewee a few months back. The interview lasted for over 30 minutes. The following is the sequence of the interview questions that I remember being asked:

-Extend your introduction beyond your c.v.

-Is your poor grade point average due to anything in particular?

-At your last internship or work, what duties did you have to perform?

-It sounds like you’re working on an interesting topic; could you give me a brief summary?

-You seem to have a preference for new businesses; can you explain why?

-Which concerns might a young company have?

-Tests of knowledge and skills

The interview was quite relaxed and easygoing.

HEC Paris MIM Interview Experience-4

The HEC MIM Admission Committee conducted a virtual interview with one of our candidates. In the following interviews, he elaborated on what he had written to us about:

Give me a brief introduction to who you are. Tell me about what you do today in the office. Tell me about your time at school. When you have free time, what do you like to do? Please describe your short-term and long-term aims in the workplace. Please provide a list of the top three employers you hope to work for after completing your MIM. To what end did you quit your former position? Get an MIM for what reason? So why now, exactly? High-Energy Context: “Why?” How do you plan to help HEC succeed? Any Questions?

The interview was straightforward and covered standard questions.

HEC Paris MIM Interview Experience-5

“The HEC MiM interviews are normally conducted by a panel of three to four people. My interview was conducted by a panel of three people. The other two were both French women; one taught French in India, while the other taught at an SAI business school.

Profile-Informed Queries

Can you tell me more about what you’ve been up to with Project X? Why do you prefer new businesses? Just a few of the issues that young businesses face

Competency-based Questioning

hec mim essay questions

The MBA program at HEC Paris is renowned for its rigorous academic curriculum, diverse student body, and exceptional global exposure.

Your journey towards this esteemed MBA program starts with a critical step: the application essays. These essays are more than just written responses; they are a window into your personality, aspirations, and potential contributions to the HEC community.

HEC Paris MBA Highlights :

  • HEC Paris MBA Class Profile
  • HEC Paris MBA Scholarships
  • HEC Paris MBA Eligibility
  • HEC Paris MBA Essays
  • HEC Paris MBA Interview Questions
  • HEC Paris MBA GMAT

ESSAY 1: CAREER OBJECTIVES AND REASONS FOR APPLYING

Why HEC Paris, and why now? This question is at the heart of the first essay. It’s your chance to articulate not just your career goals but also how the HEC MBA program aligns perfectly with your professional trajectory.

KEY COMPONENTS TO ADDRESS:

  • Articulating Career Goals: Be specific about your post-MBA career objectives. What role are you aiming for? In which industry? How does this align with your long-term aspirations?
  • The ‘Why Now’ Factor: Why is this the perfect time for you to pursue an MBA? Connect the dots between your current professional status and the leap an MBA represents.
  • HEC’s Unique Offerings: Delve into what aspects of HEC Paris’ MBA program resonate with your goals. Is it the global exposure, the diverse alumni network, or specific courses and faculty?

HOW TO MAKE YOUR ESSAY STAND OUT:

  • Personalization: Avoid generic statements. Tailor your response to reflect a deep understanding of what HEC Paris offers.
  • Clarity and Conciseness: Your goals should be clear and well-defined. Use examples to illustrate your career path and how an HEC MBA is pivotal in this journey.
  • Connect the Past, Present, and Future: Show how your past experiences, current skills, and future aspirations are interconnected and how HEC acts as a bridge to your goals.

ESSAY 2: MOST SIGNIFICANT LIFE ACHIEVEMENT

In the second essay, you’re asked to reflect on your most significant life achievement. This is a golden opportunity to give the admissions committee a glimpse into what shapes you as an individual. It’s not just about what you’ve achieved but also why it matters to you.

CHOOSING YOUR ACHIEVEMENT:

  • Professional vs. Personal: While professional achievements are valuable, don’t overlook impactful personal experiences. Sometimes, it’s the personal victories that truly define us.
  • Impact and Significance: Focus on an achievement that had a profound impact on your life or on others. What did this achievement change or demonstrate about you?

CRAFTING YOUR NARRATIVE:

  • Storytelling: Use a narrative style to engage the reader. How did you accomplish this feat? What challenges did you overcome?
  • Reflective Insight: Don’t just describe what happened. Reflect on why this achievement is significant to you. How did it shape your perspectives or future choices?

ESSAY 3: LEADERSHIP AND ETHICS

This essay intertwines two critical aspects of business: leadership and ethics. It’s your chance to demonstrate your understanding of these complex, often interconnected domains.

STRUCTURING YOUR RESPONSE:

  • Choosing the Right Example: Select a situation where your decision-making and leadership skills were tested, particularly in an ethical context.
  • Detailed Narrative: Describe the situation, your role, the ethical dilemma, and the outcome. Be honest and introspective about the challenges faced and the choices made.

DEMONSTRATING YOUR LEARNING:

  • Personal Growth: How did this experience influence your understanding of leadership and ethics? What did you learn about yourself and your approach to ethical challenges?
  • Application to Future Scenarios: Reflect on how this experience has prepared you for future leadership roles, especially in ethically complex situations.

ESSAY 4: IMAGINING A DIFFERENT LIFE

The fourth essay of the HEC Paris MBA application takes a more creative turn, asking you to imagine a life entirely different from your current one. This essay is a unique window into your personality, dreams, and the breadth of your imagination.

APPROACHING THE ESSAY:

  • Creative Liberty: This is your chance to showcase your creativity. Imagine a life that reflects a hidden passion, an unexplored career path, or a dream yet to be pursued.
  • Connecting to Your Current Self: While your imagined life should be different, it should still connect to who you are. For instance, if you have a passion for art, you might imagine a life as an art curator or artist.

MAKING IT MEANINGFUL:

  • Depth Over Drama: Your imagined life need not be overly dramatic or fantastical. It should, however, offer depth and insight into your values, interests, and personality.
  • Reflective Tone: Discuss why this alternate life appeals to you. What does it say about your aspirations, interests, or the diversity of your character?

ESSAY 5: CHOICE OF THREE TOPICS

For the fifth essay, you have the option to choose from three distinct topics. This essay allows you to further diversify your application by discussing an area of personal significance or interest.

THE TOPICS:

  • Monument or Site: Discuss a significant monument or site in your country or city. Why is it meaningful to you, and what does it reveal about your background or interests?
  • Analyzing Success: Choose a book, movie, or play that has achieved international success but you believe is overrated. Share your critical analysis and what your perspective reveals about you.
  • Admired Figure: Write about a figure you admire from any field. Explain why and how this admiration is reflective of your own values or life philosophy.

TIPS FOR EACH TOPIC:

  • Personal Connection: Whether it’s a monument, a piece of art, or an admired figure, the key is to establish a personal connection. How do these choices relate to your life, experiences, or values?
  • Insightful Analysis: Provide thoughtful analysis and insights. For instance, if you choose an admired figure, delve into the specific attributes that you find inspiring and why.

OPTIONAL ESSAY: ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The HEC Paris MBA application includes an optional essay, providing a platform to share additional information that might not fit into the other essays. This is your chance to address any part of your application that might raise questions or to highlight unique aspects of your background.

WHEN TO USE THE OPTIONAL ESSAY:

  • Addressing Concerns: If there’s a gap in your work history, a low GPA or GMAT score, or any other red flag in your application, this is the place to explain it.
  • Showcasing Diversity: If you have a unique aspect of your background or an unusual experience that hasn’t been covered in other essays, use this space to share it.
  • Be Direct and Concise: Get straight to the point. If you’re explaining a gap in employment, briefly state the reason, what you learned or how you grew during that time.
  • Highlighting Positives: If you’re using this essay to showcase a unique aspect of your profile, focus on how it adds value to your candidacy and potentially to the HEC MBA community.

Crafting essays for the HEC Paris MBA program is an introspective and strategic process. It requires a balance of personal reflection, professional clarity, and creative thinking. Each essay serves as a piece of your narrative, together painting a comprehensive picture of who you are and what you aspire to achieve.

Final Thoughts:

  • Be Authentic: Authenticity resonates. Let your true self shine through in each essay.
  • Be Reflective: Use the essays to demonstrate your ability to reflect on your experiences, learn from them, and articulate your future goals.
  • Be Concise and Clear: Given the word limits, it’s crucial to be concise yet impactful in your storytelling.

Embarking on your HEC Paris MBA journey begins with these essays. Use them as a platform to showcase your uniqueness, your aspirations, and how you envision contributing to the HEC community and beyond.
