We appreciate you taking the time to answer these Haverford specific questions and are excited for the opportunity to consider your application for admission.

Good writing is a process, and there are many resources you might use as you craft your responses, including asking someone you trust to review your work and offer feedback or using generative artificial intelligence to brainstorm your response. But please know that what is most important to us is to hear your voice and ideas. Your voice matters to us, and hearing it in your writing will help us better understand who you are and imagine who you would be at Haverford.

Haverford College has one of the oldest and one of the very few student-run Honor Codes in the U.S. Our Honor Code is not a set of rules, but rather a statement of shared values around both the academic and social aspects of life and is centered on the concepts of trust, concern, and respect. Our Honor Code serves as an educational tool in and of itself and provides a powerful framework for our community, emphasizing and supporting qualities we see as essential to a Haverford education. Among other things, the Honor Code at Haverford supports:

  • Academic Freedom: The Honor Code fosters an atmosphere emphasizing academic integrity, collaboration over competition, and the cultivation of intellectual curiosity. Differences and disagreement are respected, valued, and embraced, and open discourse is seen as fundamental to the academic endeavor.
  • Student Agency: The Honor Code upholds a culture in which students are deeply trusted to take substantial ownership of their education and to profoundly shape and define the Haverford community. Student ownership is reflected in self-scheduled exams, in the fact that every student completes a Senior Thesis, in shared responsibility for the residential experience, and of course in oversight of the Honor Code itself.
  • Community: The Honor Code establishes a caring and collaborative environment for living and learning, where the community experience plays a central role in one’s education. The inherent value of every community member is recognized, and diversity in all respects—including diversity of background, experience, and perspective - is nurtured, celebrated, and embraced.
  • Leadership and Engagement: The Honor Code allows every student to find and develop their own voice, to practice ways of improving community and acting on issues of importance, to learn methods of problem solving and conflict resolution, and to examine the ways they can and will impact the world beyond Haverford.

Please give us a better sense of what you are looking for in your college experience by answering the following questions:

  • Tell us about a topic or issue that sparks your curiosity and gets you intellectually excited. How do you hope to engage with this topic or issue at Haverford? (Please limit your response to 150-200 words.)
  • We have highlighted for you some of the values that shape the Haverford community. What are some of the values you seek in your next community? How do Haverford’s values, as demonstrated through our Honor Code, resonate with you? As you think about how to answer this question, you might draw from how you have been influenced by other communities you have been a part of, experiences you may have had within your communities, or opportunities you have had to shape or even change your communities. (Please limit your response to 150-200 words.)

Prior to coming to Scholarships360 for her first internship in 2022, Savannah utilized her campus publications by joining various fashion publications that are offered at Ohio University. One of those publications is Thread Magazine, where Savannah has had the opportunity to work on articles related to world-wide related fashion news and events, as well as articles closer to home, such as a fashion piece on Athens hometown-hero Joe Burrow. How to Respond to the 2023/2024 Haverford College Supplemental Essay Prompts

Haverford College is a private liberal arts college located in Haverford, Pennsylvania. The Haverford College supplemental essays offer applicants the opportunity to share. In this article, we are going to break down both of Haverford’s supplemental essay prompts to make them easier to understand. Let’s get started!

Before you start writing…

The Haverford information page for prospective students states that applicants are “treated personally and individually, with extraordinary care and attention to detail.” In other words, every part of your application, and perhaps especially your essays, is very important.

We recommend looking over Haverford College’s Honor Code before you start writing your essays. The Honor Code is a statement of values shared by the academic community, so in order to get a better feel for the school and what kind of student they are looking for, familiarize yourself with this. Their Honor Code is comprised of four pillars:

  • Academic Freedom
  • Student Agency
  • Leadership and Engagement
Tell us about a topic or issue that sparks your curiosity and gets you intellectually excited. How do you think the environment at Haverford and the framework of the Honor Code would foster your continued intellectual growth? (200 word limit)

Although there are most likely a lot of things that you are passionate about, it might be harder to consider what makes you intellectually excited. First, you have to choose one thing that gets you excited to learn, to work for, or to talk about. From there, go back to those Honor Codes and connect what you love to what Haverford students are passionate about.

Next, think about how what you are passionate about will have the opportunity to flourish while attending Haverford College. Here, you can talk about all of the ways your experience can be enriched, how your passion will lead you through your college career, and how it can help you grow as a person and a member of the Haverford community.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • What are you passionate about?
  • Is there a class in high school that makes you excited to come to school every day?
  • Are you passionate about any environmental, social justice, or human rights issues?
We have highlighted for you some of the values that shape the Haverford community. (200 word limit)

This is another prompt that connects right back to the Honor Code. Think about what you value most and tie it back to how attending Haverford will help you honor and live up to those values. Be honest while explaining your motivation for applying.

As for what excites you most, you can always connect this back to academics and community. If it’s too far in advance to know what you are most excited about, go for the academic route and talk about the opportunities that Haverford offers within your major, or professors that you are looking forward to working with. These are always great options.

  • How has your family and/or community shaped your personal values?
  • What specific experiences and opportunities shaped you into the student you are today?
  • Did you choose Haverford because of their set of values?

Final thoughts for students

The Haverford College supplemental essays are an ideal way for the admissions team to learn more about you. As long as you are honest about why you chose your major and why Haverford is the best place for you, they will respect that. Although there is a pretty small word count, you can always go back to edit later. Write how you feel, and go back and edit for conciseness.

2023-2024 Haverford College Supplemental Essay Prompts

A building is featured beyond a walking path at Haverford College.

Previously Published on July 13, 2013:

Haverford College has released its supplemental admissions essays for the 2023-2024 college admissions cycle. Applicants to the Haverford Class of 2028 will be asked to answer two essays besides The Common Application ’s Personal Statement. So what are the essay prompts for applicants to the Haverford Class of 2028 ? Wonder no more!

2023-2024 Haverford Essay Topics and Questions

Haverford’s admissions committee asks applicants to write 150-200 words for each of its two required supplemental essays. Haverford’s two supplemental essays for applicants to the Class of 2028 are as follows:

1. Tell us about a topic or issue that sparks your curiosity and gets you intellectually excited. How do you hope to engage with this topic or issue at Haverford?

This essay prompt is a hybrid as it asks students to write about a topic that excites them in addition to showcasing how they hope to engage with that topic at Haverford. So it’s a part why topic question and a part Why Haverford question . The issue an applicant chooses shouldn’t inspire a yawn.

For example, selecting climate change would not be a good choice since it’s a no-brainer — of course, climate change is bad. A better version for an environmental activist could be smellscapes — how various lands smell differently over the course of years due to changes to our climate. The very specific sniffer beats the more broad climate change activist.

The topic should also directly relate to a student’s hook so a student can effectively demonstrate how they’ll contribute their unique background — rather than well-roundedness — to the school’s community.

And then, of course, an applicant must transition to the Why Haverford component of the question. In this part of the response, a student should include specifics that only apply to Haverford. If an applicant can easily replace Haverford in a sentence with Williams, the sentence should be deleted. And applicants should strive to capture genuine, enduring specifics about a school. As such, name-dropping professors and listing classes don’t count.

2. We have highlighted for you some of the values that shape the Haverford community.

This broad essay prompt, in some variation, has long been a staple of the Haverford supplement. Haverford’s Honor Code, which the school considers to be a living, breathing document, has been in place at the institution for over 100 years, and they’re mighty proud of it — even publicly re-evaluating and reaffirming its content each academic year.

In the wake of the Supreme Court’s outlawing of Affirmative Action in late June 2023, this prompt now provides an opportunity — one afforded by Chief Justice John Roberts’ majority opinion in which he cited a loophole to the consideration of race in the admissions process — for students to write about their unique life experiences and perspectives.

Of course, Haverford applicants need not write about race in their answer. Community is a broad term. Maybe it’s a scientific community or a community of poets. Perhaps it’s a faith-based community. It could be anything, but what’s important is that an applicant’s response showcases intellectual curiosity and a desire to agitate for change from within, however small, to make our world a better one.

How hard is it to get into haverford, average academic profile of accepted haverford students, what is haverford looking for, how to improve your chances of getting into haverford.

Haverford College, a close-knit intellectual community located on a serene arboretum campus just outside of Philadelphia, is known for its rigorous and highly-esteemed academic program, and its student-governed Honor Code. It is consistently considered among the top academic institutions in the country. Haverford’s academic program focuses on intellectual exploration, individual growth, and pushing the boundaries of what we know, and prepares students for a myriad of opportunities after graduation.

Haverford is a member of the Tri-College Consortium , which includes Bryn Mawr College and Swarthmore College, and allows students to easily take classes at the other two colleges. Students additionally get the benefit of the personal experience of a small liberal arts college in addition to the wide range of resources of the Consortium.

Haverford’s unique honor system and student community is embodied by the Honor Code: unlike in most other colleges, Haverford’s Honor Code is entirely written and governed by its students. Every year, the code is re-ratified by the student body through voting. By being directly involved in the set of expectations and rules for their time on campus, students have autonomy and agency, all while creating a community of trust and respect.

Unlike some colleges where senior theses are reserved for honors students, at Haverford, every senior completes a senior thesis in which students conduct original independent research alongside faculty members, at levels usually reserved for graduate students at other institutions.

Interested in applying to Haverford? Read on for a deep dive into what it takes to get accepted.

For the 2020–2021 admissions cycle, Haverford received 4,530 applicants, of which 826 were accepted. This means that last year, Haverford’s acceptance rate was 18.2% , making it a highly selective school. That same year, Haverford received 427 early decision applicants, of which 197 were accepted, which yields a 46% acceptance rate for early decision. Haverford does not have early action.

While Haverford’s admissions rates are low, they don’t necessarily reflect your own chances of admission. Our free chancing calculator can help you better understand your chances of acceptance into Haverford. By taking into account multiple elements of your profile, including your grades, test scores, extracurriculars, and more, we’ll estimate your odds of acceptance, and give you tips on improving your profile!

Of the 32% of last year’s first-year students at Haverford who submitted class rank, 94% graduated in the top 10% of their high school class, and 99% graduated in the top 25% .

While standardized test scores are usually required for applicants, Haverford is test-optional for three years, beginning with students entering in Fall 2021. Of the students who enrolled in Fall 2020,  the top 25% of students scored above a 1510 on the SAT, with 68% scoring above 1400. The top 25% of those who submitted ACT scores scored above a 35, with 93% scoring above 30 .

While Haverford doesn’t offer information on its students’ high school GPA, given that almost 95% of admitted students graduated in the top 10% of their class, you should aim for all A’s to be a competitive candidate.

Haverford seeks intellectually curious, honest, and collaborative individuals who want to inform and improve the world.

As exemplified by its Honor Code and senior thesis, Haverford wants students who will make the most of the college’s efforts to expand students’ intellectual horizons in order to foster a better world.

How Haverford Evaluates Applications

According to their 2020-2021 Common Data Set, Haverford considers the following factors “very important” :

These factors are “important” :

  • Talent/ability

  • Work experience

These are “considered” :

  • Standardized test scores
  • First generation
  • Alumni/ae relation
  • Geographical residence
  • Racial/ethnic status
  • Level of applicant’s interest

And these are “not considered” :

  • State residency
  • Religious affiliation/commitment

Discover your chances at hundreds of schools

Our free chancing engine takes into account your history, background, test scores, and extracurricular activities to show you your real chances of admission—and how to improve them.

1. Aim for all A’s while taking the most challenging classes available

While Haverford doesn’t have a “cut-off” GPA, accepted applicants across the board have strong academics. Since almost 100% of enrolled first-years last year graduated in the top 10% of their class, a competitive candidate for Haverford will need to have A’s in almost every class. Additionally, Haverford wants to see that students challenge themselves, so you should try and take advanced honors, AP, or IB classes.

If your GPA is lower, and you’re still a freshman or sophomore in your high school, check out our tips for increasing your GPA . If you’re a junior or senior, it will be harder to increase your GPA, so the easiest way to increase your Academic Index is to get a higher test score.

2. Write engaging essays and supplement responses

In addition to the Common Application/Coalition Application/Questbridge Application essays, Haverford will require you to respond to questions in the Haverford Supplement, which includes a response to their Honor Code . Haverford’s emphasis on a student’s written articulation can be seen through not only the writing supplements but also the school’s mandatory first-year writing seminar .

Use the essays to show your strengths, character, your authentic voice, what you’re passionate about, and what you may bring to Haverford’s campus.

For tips on how to approach the supplemental essays, take a look at our guide to the Haverford essays 2021–2022 .

3. Cultivate at least one or two Tier 1-2 extracurriculars (find your “ spike ”)

Haverford seeks students who are not only curious learners in the classroom but who can bring their independent thinking into the world. Haverford fosters new ways of seeing the world and boundary-pushing innovation through collaboration and hands-on learning, and the school wants to see that its prospective students have engaged with non-academic passions, whether that be through service work, debate clubs, or music competition awards.

In general, any activity that you do regularly outside the classroom counts as an extracurricular, as long as you can demonstrate that the activity has contributed to your growth as an individual. However, not all extracurriculars are created equal. Extracurricular activities can generally be divided into four “tiers.” To increase your chances at Haverford, you should have one to two “Tier 1” or “Tier 2” extracurriculars.

  • Tier 1 activities demonstrate exceptional talent, achievement, leadership, or merit. Activities and roles on the national level or which garner field-wide recognition count as Tier 1 activities. This may include winning a national award, qualifying for international competition and therefore gaining prestigious recognition, or starting a nonprofit that gains national traction. Having a Tier 1 activity marks you as a distinguished youth in the field of your activity, so having Tier 1 activities is rare.
  • Tier 2 activities are more common than Tier 1, but still show high levels of achievement and potential. Holding school-wide leadership positions like student government president, winning regional competitions or awards, and local recognition as a student athlete or musician are all considered Tier 2.
  • Tier 3 activities demonstrate sustained participation rather than exceptional achievement, and are frequently seen in applications, both across the board as well as in any given individual student’s application, as some students may have more than one Tier 3 activity. These activities can include holding minor positions in school clubs or being on a Varsity team.
  • Tier 4 activities are the most common and have the lowest entry bar; they demonstrate interest without particular dedication. However, they are still important to include, especially if you have higher tier activities, because they can help show the diversity of your interests. Tier 4 activities can include regular volunteering, general membership in clubs or organizations, or taking any kind of music or art lesson over several years.

4. Ask the right teachers for recommendation letters

Haverford requires three letters of recommendation: one from a counselor, and two from teachers of an academic core subject (English, Math, Science, Social Studies or Foreign Language.) Haverford is a small college with a high faculty–student ratio (9:1), in which 76% of classes have fewer than 20 students, and where students and professors collaborate closely outside the classroom as well as inside.

Your letters of recommendation will show admissions officers what kind of student and peer you are. Letters of recommendation should come from instructors who know you the best and who can speak positively of your character and abilities. Take some time to think about which teacher will write you the most promising recommendation letter, and take a look at tips from CollegeVine to help guide you through the process.

5. Apply Early Decision

Remember that Haverford’s early decision acceptance rate is 46% , while the regular decision acceptance rate is 18.2% . As early decision is binding, you considerably increase your chances of acceptance to Haverford when you apply as an early decision applicant—even after accounting for profile strength. If you have your heart set on Haverford, applying ED can be a great way to show your commitment. However, there are some drawbacks to keep in mind about applying early, including less time to refine your application, fewer financial aid packages options, and the obvious inability to try your hand at other colleges if you do get in.

What You Need To Get Accepted Into Haverford

This online app allows students to create one cohesive college application that they can send out to multiple schools, while still tailoring each application to the school. Students who want to increase their chances of having success with the Common App should look into the basics of how it works and how it’s used .

Specifically, there are two important deadlines for Haverford applicants: November 15th is the deadline for early decision, while January 1st is the deadline for regular decision applicants.

SCHOOL TRANSCRIPT

Students are required to submit an official transcript to Haverford through their school. ACT and SAT scores are optional and students can choose whether or not to send them, but enrolled students must submit official scores. Students should make sure to do what they can to raise their GPA so that it reflects their hard work and effort.

PERSONAL ESSAYS

Applicants to Haverford College are asked to submit a supplemental essay through the Common Application and an Honor Code essay. Make sure your student fully reads through and understands each prompt. The best essay responses are clear and use strong language, are tailored to the unique opportunities offered at Haverford, and remain true to who the student is as a person.

TEACHER RECOMMENDATIONS

Students are asked to obtain two teacher letters of recommendation for their Haverford application. These teachers must have taught the student in a core subject such as math or English. Your student should ask their teachers for these letters well before the deadline to ensure the teacher has enough time to write a thoughtful recommendation.

APPLICATION FEE

Applicants are required to pay a nonrefundable $65 application fee or obtain a fee waiver.

SPORTS AND ORGANIZATIONS

Over 50% of students play in varsity sports representing the Fords. From baseball, to basketball, to tennis, there are plenty of ways for students to become involved in varsity athletics.

Students also have a chance to be involved in intramural sports as well in many different teams. There are organizations for all types of students, whether they are looking to bond with others over shared passions or hobbies or become an activist, support their peers, or perform for their school.

From Application To Career: What You'll Experience At Haverford

Your application.

Because your student will be allowed to use the Common App to apply, they can start and stop working on their application at any point. This means they can start early and come back to their application as needed to provide more context, better references, and updates to their test scores until it’s time to send the application. In order to have the best chances of admission, your student’s application should be a showcase of their entire personality, not just their academic scores.

Your student’s essay should be short and to the point, focusing on a  central theme and the personal story their application is trying to tell. If the essay could be sent to any other small liberal arts college, it needs to be made more specific to Haverford and the unique responsibility they place on their students.

YOUR COLLEGE YEARS

This is just one example of the type of responsibility that is entrusted to the students of Haverford, and this responsibility will help your student blossom during their years studying in the arboretum.

YOUR FUTURE

As a result, over 64% of graduates find employment soon after graduation .
