Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, popularly known as APJ Abdul Kalam was born in a Tamil Muslim family on October 15th, 1931. Who knew that a lad who was born to poverty-stricken parents would one day become a millennial aerospace scientist and step up to be the 11th President of India ? Being on a constant quest to learn and gain as much knowledge as he can, his educational journey was full of challenges. Let us walk you through APJ Abdul Kalam ‘s education to inspire a large number of students across the world.

Even though APJ Abdul Kalam was an average student, his desire to read and spend hours studying and learning Mathematics , proved to create a strong foundation in his initial stage of education. Upon completing his schooling at Rameshwaram Elementary School and Schwartz Higher Secondary School, he continued his graduation in Physics from Saint Joseph’s College and later in 1955, he studied Aerospace Engineering at Madras Institute of Technology.

When we talk about APJ Abdul Kalam’s education, it is quite obvious that he always wanted to make a successful career in Aviation . Becoming a fighter pilot was once his dearest dream, which was not fulfilled as he couldn’t reach the final merit of IAF. After completing his higher education, Kalam joined the DRDO (Aeronautical Development Establishment of the Defence Research and Development Organisation) as a scientist and late in the early 1960s, worked with the INCOSPAR (Indian National Committee for Space Research) under Vikram Sarabhai, a renowned space scientist. 

Even though he got immense opportunities to design hovercrafts and small helicopters, he was never convinced and always aimed for something bigger and there was no failure in this world that could stop him. Later, Abdul Kalam started independently working on expandable rocket projects at DRDO. Things took a magnificent turn when he received transfer orders to the ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) where he started as a project director of SLV-III, India’s first indigenous Satellite Launch Vehicle, which deployed the Rohini satellite into orbit the earth in July 1980.

His dedication led to the development of 4 missile projects namely Prithvi, Trishul, Akash and Nag. Due to this contribution, he earned the title of the ‘ Missile Man of India ’. Later in 1992, Kalam was appointed as the Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister and promoted to Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India in 1999. 

APJ Abdul Kalam’s education has immensely added to his valuable role in conducting the Pokhran-II, a series of 5 nuclear test explosions in 1998. His status as a national hero made India to be recognised as a full-fledged nuclear state. This is not the end, in the same year, Kalam proposed a countrywide plan called ‘Technology Vision 2020’ to develop nuclear empowerment, and improve agricultural productivity and various technological innovations, to name a few.

Do You Know: Named after him, the Abdul Kalam Scholarship is an initiative undertaken by various state governments and educational organisations for Indian students who belong to a minority group and are planning to pursue higher education. This scholarship is available to enrol in various institutions in India and abroad.

1. Wings of Fire: An Autobiography

If you have not read any books written by Dr. Kalam, then Wings of Fire is the best one to start. As said in its title, Wings of Fire is the autobiography of Dr. Kalam, who from a humble background, went on to become a renowned scientist in Indian space research programs and the president of India. Although some of the chapters of this book are already available in the school textbooks, a cover-to-cover reading, that too as many times as possible, may bring considerable changes in the readers’ lives.

Wings of Fire is an inspiring autobiography of the Former President of India – Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. Dr Kalam along with Ankit Tiwari pens down the journey of a young boy and developing India. Published in 1999, Wings of Fire and “India 2020: A Vision For the New Millennium” became very popular. This book deals with every essential aspect of Kalam’s life. The text takes us through the ups and downs faced by Kalam sir before tasting the success.

The book successfully captivates the reader’s attention from the first page itself. It begins with the inspiring dialog between five great personalities of the world, namely Mahatma Gandhi, Albert Einstein, Emperor Asoka, Abraham Lincoln, and Caliph Omar. Dr. Kalam explains how we should let our inner energy guide us through difficult situations in life.

Each chapter opens with a quote from an eminent personality and concludes with a brief overview of the main takeaways from the chapter in question. Dr. Kalam also writes about his interactions with various people from different strata of the society. He also highlights the qualities that the Indian society at large needs to acquire and adopt. Dr. Kalam vehemently stresses on the fact that in spite of having the potential, skills and resources to achieve the extraordinary, we often tend to settle for the ordinary. All in all, Ignited Minds can also be seen as Kalam’s vision document – a road map – for the splendid future of India.

3. Turning Points: A Journey Through Challenges

Turning Points: A Journey Through Challenges, is indeed an inspiring sequel of Wings of Fire. If Wings of Fire talked about his life till 1992, Turning Points is more about his life as the President of India. Unlike Wings of Fire, Dr. Kalam has not included adequate personnel anecdotes, instead, he brings in a heavy dose of his ‘India 2020 Vision.’ In the preface, Dr. Kalam writes, “Seeing the response generated by Wings of Fire I felt that if in the same way this book too could benefit a few people it would be well worth the effort.”

Kalam is basically a teacher, a patriot and a humble human being. This is reflected copiously in his book. The book reads like a lecture and avoids use of ‘I’ wherever it is possible. There are few occasions where he narrates stories about his father and brother, but in the end, he shares moral lessons he learnt from those incidents – like in Panchatantra

OUR MINISTER

Dr. Joseph Lozovyy was born into a Christian family in Elektrostal, Moscow Region, and was raised in a pastor’s home. From the age of fifteen, he began actively participating in the music ministry of the Baptist Church in Mytishchi, where his father served as a pastor, and also played in the orchestra of the Central Moscow Baptist Church. From 1989, he participated in various evangelistic events in different cities of Moscow Region and beyond. From 1989 to 1992, as a member of the choir and orchestra “LOGOS,” he participated in evangelistic and charitable concerts, repeatedly performing on the stages of the Moscow State Conservatory, the Bolshoi Theatre, and other concert halls in Russia and abroad. In 1992, his family moved to the United States. In 2007, after completing a full course of spiritual and academic preparation, Joseph moved to Dallas, Texas, to engage in church ministry. In 2008, he founded the Russian Bible Church to preach to the Russian-speaking population living in Dallas, Texas.
