This wikiHow teaches you how to turn in your homework using Google Classroom on your computer, phone, or tablet. Once you get the hang of submitting different types of assignments, you'll be able to submit your homework assignments in seconds.

Attaching an Assignment on a Computer

• If you see an image with your name on it, that means your instructor has assigned a specific document for you to complete. Click the link and complete the assignment as indicated, and then skip to Step 9.

• If the file is on your computer, select File , choose the file, and then click Add . For example, if you wrote a paper in Microsoft Word or scanned your homework as a PDF , you'd use this option.
• If the file is in your Google Drive , select that option, choose your file, and then click Add .
• If you need to attach a link because your file is on the web, select Link , enter the location, and then click Add .
• Click X if you want to remove an attached assignment.

Submitting a Quiz Assignment on a Computer

• If this quiz was the only work for the assignment, you'll see "Turned In" as the status.

Attaching an Assignment on a Phone or Tablet

• If you're uploading a photo of an assignment, tap Pick photo , select the image (or tap Use camera to take a new one), and then tap Add . Repeat this if you need to upload multiple photos.
• If the assignment is another type of file saved to your phone or tablet, such as a document, tap File , select the file, and tap Add .
• If the file is saved to your Google Drive, tap Drive , select the file, and then tap Add .
• If you need to provide a link to your file, tap Link , enter the link, and then tap Add .

• If you created a new document, presentation, or spreadsheet, enter your assignment information and tap the checkmark when you're finished to save your work.
• If you selected PDF , you'll have a blank file to work with. Write or paste your assignment, draw notes with your finger, or use any other feature requested by your instructor. Tap Save when you are finished.

How to submit an assignment in Google Classroom, or retract a submission, on a computer or mobile device

• You can submit an assignment in Google Classroom under the "Classwork" section on the desktop site or mobile app. 
• To submit an assignment in Google Classroom, you must first "View assignment" and then select the "Add or create" option under the "Your work" menu. 
• Links and Google Drive attachments, including a document, slide, sheet, drawing, or PDF file, can all be uploaded and submitted in Google Classroom.
• You can upload multiple files, unsubmit assignments, and leave notes for your instructor in Google Classroom.  

You've logged in to Google Classroom , have joined a class, and accessed class materials. Now, it's time to submit an assignment. 

To submit an assignment in Google Classroom, you'll first need to navigate to the "Classwork" section. You can then find your assignment and attach your work. 

From there, it's as easy as turning it in. Google Classroom also allows users to unsubmit their assignments if you need to make changes or leave a private comment for a teacher about the status of your work. 

It's important to note that if you don't click "Turn in" after you attach your work, it won't be submitted. To verify the status of your assignment, double-check to see if it is labeled as "Turned in." 

When submitting assignments to Google Classroom on mobile, you'll also need to make sure you have the iPhone or Android app installed. You can search and download Google Classroom through the app store on your phone. 

Here's how to submit an assignment on Google Classroom. 

How to submit an assignment in Google Classroom on desktop

1. Open your web browser and go to classroom.google.com . 

2. Select your class. 

3. At the top of your dashboard, choose "Classwork." 

4. Click on an assignment, then select "View Assignment."

5. Under "Your Work," choose "Add or Create."

6. From there, click "Google Drive" to attach a document you've already created and saved in your Drive by selecting it from the file window that appears. If you have multiple documents, attach them all this way.

• Note: You can add a link to a Drive document or attach a file from your computer. You may also start an assignment here by creating a new document, slide, sheet, or drawing on this page. 

7. To leave a private comment for your teacher, enter it in the appropriately labeled text box on the right. Then click the small triangular "paper airplane" icon to post it. 

8. Next, click "Turn in" or "Mark as done" to confirm your submission and change the assignment status to "Turned in."

• Note: If your teacher has assigned a collaborative document that you worked on or another kind of outside assignment, you may see "Mark as done" instead of "Turn in."

How to unsubmit an assignment in Google Classroom on desktop

If you've submitted a document, but find that you need to edit out errors or add in missing content, Google Classroom offers a way to retract your submission. Navigate to the page you turned your assignment in, click "Unsubmit," and confirm. You can always turn it in again by following the above steps. 

How to submit an assignment in Google Classroom on the mobile app

1. Open the Google Classroom app on your device. 

2. Tap on your class.

3. Choose "Classwork" from the bottom of the app screen.

4. Select the assignment and expand the "Your work" card. 

5. Tap "Add attachment" in the "Your work" card.

6. From there, click "Drive" to attach a document you've already created in Drive. 

7. Tap "Turn in" or "Mark as done" and re-confirm. 

How to unsubmit an assignment in Google Classroom on iPhone or Android 

If you turned in the wrong thing or need to go back and add something to the assignment, you can unsubmit it. Navigate to the assignment, expand the "Your work" card, tap "Unsubmit," and confirm. You can always turn it in again the same way you did first.

Submit to an assignment

Before getting started.

• To submit a paper to an assignment on Turnitin, the user must log in and upload a file to an existing assignment.
• Assignments in Turnitin cannot accept student submissions until the assignment start date and time has passed.
• Assignments may also reject submissions after the due date and time set by the instructor. 
• This action opens a pop-up window showing assignment preference information, including start and due dates/times as well as other assignment information or special instructions.

After the submission has completed, a digital receipt is displayed in your browser window. A copy is also sent via email. It is important to use a valid email address to receive this copy of the digital receipt. Save the receipt and the submission ID it contains, as this is proof of a completed submission. If the digital receipt is not shown on screen after submission, return to the class portfolio page and view the assignment to ensure the paper submission completed correctly. Submissions can be checked and viewed by clicking on the title of the paper under the title column to the right of the assignment name.

Log in to turnitin.com (or turnitinuk.com if you're in the UK).

• Once you've logged in, you should see your homepage listing the classes you enrolled in .
• Click the name of the class where you'd like to upload a file. This will take you to your Class Homepage for that class.

Click the Submit button to the right of the assignment name. This will take you to the file submission page.

On the file submission page, make sure the phrase next to the Submit: heading says "Single File Upload." If it says "Cut and Paste Upload," use the dropdown menu (the down arrow) next to Submit: to switch to "Single File Upload." This will allow you to upload your file rather than using the Cut and paste file submission feature.

• Enter a title for the submission.
• Click the What can I submit? link to review the types of files and file sizes Turnitin can accept.

• Dropbox   OR
• Google Drive
• Click one of the submission buttons (computer, Dropbox , or Google Drive).
• Select the file you want to upload.
• Click the Upload button on the file submission page.
• Review the preview panel (and congratulate yourself on getting your paper done).
• Then, you must click the  Confirm button to officially upload the file to the assignment.

If you have multiple assignments due, do not submit from the same browser using separate tabs. This may cause a failed upload for one, some, or all of the assignments.

When publishing tasks on Show My Homework, we have various different submission methods you can choose from:

Online Submission via SMHW

Class submission.

You will select your preference when setting the task by using the 'How should students submit this task?' drop down menu. It's important that you consider the kind of task you are setting and how you'd like students to engage with it when making your decision here; for more information on each submission method, please read more below.

Allows students to submit their work online via the app or the browser

Students who submit online before the due date instantly receive a 'Submitted' status

Teachers are notified when work is submitted

Students who do not submit online before the due date will automatically receive a 'Not submitted' status and associated notification is sent to student and guardian

Students who submit after the due date will automatically receive 'Submitted late'

Staff can manually add submission statuses at any time

Staff can then assign grades and send comments to students if desired

Students are not able to submit their work on Satchel One online via the app or the browser

Students are required to submit their work in-class / via other means

Students will receive no automatic submission statuses

Staff must manually apply submission statuses and grades should they wish to communicate these to students and guardians

Allows you to redirect (or 'signpost') students to another submission method you'd prefer them to engage with

This could be you requesting that students email their work to you, complete an activity on another online learning tool etc.

Satchel One does not synchronise with any 'Other' platform at this time and therefore any work submitted / scores achieved on another platform will not be surfaced in Satchel One's assessment area. Should staff wish to record marks in Satchel One they would be required to do this manually via the 'Assess' area

Runner Up: Brainly.com offers a free service that allows you to type in questions and get answers and explanations from experts. The downside is that you’re limited to two answers per question and have to watch ads. 

Best Paid Homework Help Site: Chegg

• Best for: 24/7 homework assistance  

This service has three main parts . The first is Chegg Study, which includes textbook solutions, Q&A with subject experts, flashcards, video explanations, a math solver, and writing help. The resources are thorough, and reviewers state that Chegg answers homework questions quickly and accurately no matter when you submit them.  

Chegg also offers textbook rentals for students who need access to textbooks outside of their classroom. Finally, Chegg offers Internship and Career Advice for students who are preparing to graduate and may need a little extra help with the transition out of high school. 

Another great feature Chegg provides is a selection of free articles geared towards helping with general life skills, like coping with stress and saving money. Chegg’s learning modules are comprehensive, and they feature solutions to the problems in tons of different textbooks in a wide variety of subjects. 

Runner Up: Bartleby offers basically the same services as Chegg for $14.99 per month. The reason it didn’t rank as the best is based on customer reviews that say user questions aren’t answered quite as quickly on this site as on Chegg. Otherwise, this is also a solid choice!

Best Site for Math Homework Help: Photomath

• Price: Free (or $59.99 per year for premium services) 
• Best for: Explaining solutions to math problems

This site allows you to t ake a picture of a math problem, and instantly pulls up a step-by-step solution, as well as a detailed explanation of the concept. Photomath also includes animated videos that break down mathematical concepts to help you better understand and remember them. 

The basic service is free, but for an additional fee you can get extra study tools and learn additional strategies for solving common math problems.

Runner Up: KhanAcademy offers in-depth tutorials that cover complex math topics for free, but you won’t get the same tailored help (and answers!) that Photomath offers. 

Best Site for English Homework Help: Princeton Review Academic Tutoring

• Price: $40 to $153 per month, depending on how many hours of tutoring you want 
• Best for: Comprehensive and personalized reading and writing help 

While sites like Grammarly and Sparknotes help you by either proofreading what you write via an algorithm or providing book summaries, Princeton Review’s tutors provide in-depth help with vocabulary, literature, essay writing and development, proofreading, and reading comprehension. And unlike other services, you’ll have the chance to work with a real person to get help. 

The best part is that you can get on-demand English (and ESL) tutoring from experts 24/7. That means you can get help whenever you need it, even if you’re pulling an all-nighter! 

This is by far the most expensive homework site on this list, so you’ll need to really think about what you need out of a homework help website before you commit. One added benefit is that the subscription covers over 80 other subjects, including AP classes, which can make it a good value if you need lots of help!  

Best Site for STEM Homework Help: Studypool

• Best for: Science homework help
• Price: Varies; you’ll pay for each question you submit

When it comes to science homework help, there aren’t a ton of great resources out there. The best of the bunch is Studypool, and while it has great reviews, there are some downsides as well. 

Let’s start with the good stuff. Studypool offers an interesting twist on the homework help formula. After you create a free account, you can submit your homework help questions, and tutors will submit bids to answer your questions. You’ll be able to select the tutor–and price point–that works for you, then you’ll pay to have your homework question answered. You can also pay a small fee to access notes, lectures, and other documents that top tutors have uploaded. 

The downside to Studypool is that the pricing is not transparent . There’s no way to plan for how much your homework help will cost, especially if you have lots of questions! Additionally, it’s not clear how tutors are selected, so you’ll need to be cautious when you choose who you’d like to answer your homework questions.  

What Are the Pros and Cons of Using Homework Help Sites?

Homework help websites can be a great resource if you’re struggling in a subject, or even if you just want to make sure that you’re really learning and understanding topics and ideas that you’re interested in. But, there are some possible drawbacks if you don’t use these sites responsibly. 

We’ll go over the good–and the not-so-good–aspects of getting online homework help below.

First, let’s take a look at the benefits. 

#1: Better Grades Beyond Homework

This is a big one! Getting outside help with your studies can improve your understanding of concepts that you’re learning, which translates into better grades when you take tests or write essays. 

Remember: homework is designed to help reinforce the concepts you learned in class. If you just get easy answers without learning the material behind the problems, you may not have the tools you need to be successful on your class exams…or even standardized tests you’ll need to take for college.

Now, let’s take a look at the drawbacks of online homework help. 

#1: Unreliable Info

This can be a real problem. In addition to all the really good homework help sites, there are a whole lot of disreputable or unreliable sites out there. The fact of the matter is that some homework help sites don’t necessarily hire people who are experts in the subjects they’re talking about. In those cases, you may not be getting the accurate, up-to-date, and thorough information you need.

Additionally, even the great sites may not be able to answer all of your homework questions. This is especially true if the site uses an algorithm or chatbot to help students…or if you’re enrolled in an advanced or college-level course. In these cases, working with your teacher or school-provided tutors are probably your best option. 

#2: No Clarification

This depends on the service you use, of course. But the majority of them provide free or low-cost help through pre-recorded videos. Watching videos or reading info online can definitely help you with your homework… but you can’t ask questions or get immediate feedback if you need it .

#3: Potential For Scamming 

Like we mentioned earlier, there are a lot of homework help websites out there, and lots of them are scams. The review comments we read covered everything from outdated or wrong information, to misleading claims about the help provided, to not allowing people to cancel their service after signing up. 

No matter which site you choose to use, make sure you research and read reviews before you sign up–especially if it’s a paid service! 

When Does “Help” Become “Cheating”?

Admittedly, whether using homework help websites constitutes cheating is a bit of a grey area. For instance, is it “help” when a friend reads your essay for history class and corrects your grammar, or is it “cheating”? The truth is, not everyone agrees on when “help” crosses the line into “cheating .” When in doubt, it can be a good idea to check with your teacher to see what they think about a particular type of help you want to get. 

That said, a general rule of thumb to keep in mind is to make sure that the assignment you turn in for credit is authentically yours . It needs to demonstrate your own thoughts and your own current abilities. Remember: the point of every homework assignment is to 1) help you learn something, and 2) show what you’ve learned. 

So if a service answers questions or writes essays for you, there’s a good chance using it constitutes cheating. 

Here’s an example that might help clarify the difference for you. Brainstorming essay ideas with others or looking online for inspiration is “help” as long as you write the essay yourself. Having someone read it and give you feedback about what you need to change is also help, provided you’re the one that makes the changes later. 

But copying all or part of an essay you find online or having someone write (or rewrite) the whole thing for you would be “cheating.” The same is true for other subjects. Ultimately, if you’re not generating your own work or your own answers, it’s probably cheating.

Tip 1: Decide How You Learn Best 

Before you decide which site or sites you’re going to use for homework help, y ou should figure out what kind of learning style works for you the most. Are you a visual learner? Then choose a site that uses lots of videos to help explain concepts. If you know you learn best by actually doing tasks, choose a site that provides lots of practice exercises.

Tip 2: Determine Which Subjects You Need Help With

Just because a homework help site is good overall doesn’t mean that it’s equally good for every subject. If you only need help in math, choose a site that specializes in that area. But if history is where you’re struggling, a site that specializes in math won’t be much help. So make sure to choose a site that you know provides high-quality help in the areas you need it most.

Help! My Mom Keeps Dragging Me to the Club Against My Will.

I want to support her retirement party lifestyle, but i’m a homebody.

Dear Prudence,

I write to you for some help with what is probably a strange dilemma: How do I enjoy clubbing with my mom? To elaborate, my mom was a single parent who gave up a lot to raise me. Now that she’s older and retired, she’s trying to indulge in some of her old hobbies, like listening to live music in clubs and bars. Going to these performances wasn’t really a problem when she was in her home country, where she had friends and other family members to keep her company, but now that she’s with me in America, she’s reluctant to go out by herself, and I end up going with her to these events to help her enjoy her retirement.

The problem is, I am the complete opposite of her and hate going out to clubs! I don’t like being outside past 7 p.m. and dislike alcohol (in contrast, she enjoys the ambience of nightclubs and loves drinking), so I kind of just awkwardly sit in the corner with my phone in hand. I also have sensory issues with crowds and loud music, so I try to make myself as small as possible. My mom, unsurprisingly, can sense this anxious energy from me, and the last time we went to a jazz bar to see one of her favorite bands, she tried to cut her stay shorter than usual in consideration of me.

She says she’s already happy that I’m “making the sacrifices” to come with her, but I don’t want her to feel bad about this! I try my best not to make it obvious how much I dislike being in this type of space, but she’s my mom. Obviously, she knows the kid she raised. As such, I’d appreciate any advice on how I can shift my mindset and allow myself to enjoy, or at least become accustomed to, this type of space. Letting her go out alone isn’t an option, considering her age and bad ankle, but I also don’t want her to feel bad about her hobbies when I accompany her. What would you recommend I do to ensure that my mom has a good time by making myself have a good time too?

Dear Homebody Child,

I can feel how much you want your mom to have a good time and be happy and how much you appreciate what she did to raise you as a single parent. But I want to promise you this: You may owe your mom some love and gratitude for all she’s done for you in life, but you do not owe her clubbing if you don’t like it!

My German husband basically grew up in clubs, going out dancing, staying out late. He is over 50 and still wants to go dancing! I, on the other hand, have been in exactly one real dance club in my life (in Berlin, last year, at the age of 48) and do not plan on making it a regular thing. We all love people who like different things than we do. And while it’s nice to give the things we don’t naturally gravitate toward a try now and then, we do not need to adopt them as our own lifestyle (unless that is part of an explicit deal in your relationship—which is a different thing).

I think your time and energy would be better spent helping your mom find a friend, or a group, with whom she could indulge her love of jazz bars and drinking and staying out late. People of all ages are on the apps. Could you help her set up a profile and go through suitable matches? It doesn’t have to be for romance; there are options out there to find friends too. Or maybe research if there are seniors clubs or groups that go on outings together? Taking this project on would also give you quality time together, and you’d be showing how much you care about her by helping her gain some independence, in addition to having fun.

If you still want to keep her company at the club while you look for alternatives, why don’t you try setting some boundaries and expectations? You could offer to go out twice a month, or whatever is doable, and also make clear you are good only until 10 p.m. That way, you know that it won’t be a night that goes on and on.

The great thing is that, if she does find her own person(s), you can spend your time together doing things that you both enjoy doing. No need to “make” anyone have a good time!

I’ve been dating my (33 F) boyfriend, “Brian” (35 M), for about three years. We just moved in together, and things are great. My only issue is that he gets jealous. Brian has a good job and we make very similar salaries, but he’s not very fulfilled by his work and has been passed up for several promotions in the past five years. Brian and I have very good communication, but he’s been trying to hide his jealousy for a while, until it all came out over the weekend. He said he’s a little jealous of the opportunities I’ve had recently to travel and go to other events because of my job.

People being jealous of me is not a new thing, but it is something that I have only recently started to realize. My best friend since high school was this way. After I recognized that this friend’s strange behaviors, which I’d merely considered odd at the time, were due to jealousy, it started to make sense. The thing is, because it took so long for me to have this epiphany, I haven’t really developed the skills to deal with it, and I don’t know how to deal with it with Brian now. I want to be there for him. He’s not letting the jealousy be destructive to our relationship, but I just don’t know how to comfort someone jealous of what I have. It’s not as if I grew up rich. My parents were teachers, which I think helped me to do the things that got me into a good school, but I’ve worked really hard to get to where I am. I can’t change the fact that I’m successful, and I’m not going to feel bad about it. Brian is being very mature and says he wants to work on this together. I really want to help him. Is that even possible? Is this something he just needs to go to therapy for? What can I do?

Dear Girlfriend,

I am trying to square the beginning of your letter—“things are going great”—and everything else you have to say. You two “have very good communication,” but he was hiding his jealousy, then let it all out over the weekend. He isn’t “letting the jealousy be destructive to our relationship,” but here you are, writing to Prudie! He is being “very mature” about this, but you feel it’s your job to comfort him out of his negative feelings. Let me tell you: This is not possible. Also, his jealousy is not your problem (unless you are rubbing your success in his face, but it does not sound as if that is what you are doing). I truly hate to be a downer here, but I’m pretty concerned about your relationship. You’re doing a lot of saying that things are great, but then undermining that with various details. (Also, have you wondered why he has been passed up for all those promotions? I know there are a million factors in these things, but I have to wonder if something else is going on with work too.)

The best way you can help him is suggest he go to therapy to deal with his feelings of inadequacy and jealousy. But I want to stress, again, that this is not your problem. You are proud of your success, and a good— mature , to use your word—partner should be proud of you too. See if he can get to a better place, and if he can’t, please consider your options! You sound like a catch.

My stepchildren are 15 and 20. I have a toddler and stay at home. Things are pretty tight, moneywise. They never text us when they are coming over for dinner. Then, they complain that they’re hungry and don’t have hot food in front of them and have to make themselves a sandwich. Half the time, they don’t even bother to show up when they say they will, leaving us to waste food. Even with boxing up the leftovers, it is beyond frustrating. My husband likes having dinnertime be family time, but frankly, it feels to me like a slap in the face. I am not asking for the moon and the stars here—just be respectful and let me know if you’re coming for dinner or not!

I hit my limit when I made some fresh spaghetti with enough for my husband and me and our baby. The 20-year-old shows up with friends and then tells me, to my face, that I need to get back in the kitchen and make more. My husband was right there when this was said to me. I got up, got my toddler, and left the house for a very long walk.

When we got back home, my husband was upset that I had made a “scene.” I told him that if I hadn’t left, there would have been a scene that required the police to be called. How dare he let his adult child speak to me like that. I am his wife, not the cook and housekeeper his children get to use and abuse. I told him I was done: I would cook for our baby and myself. My husband could be the short-order cook for his own kids. I am sticking to it, and my husband hates it. The man could burn water, and his kids don’t want to learn to cook either (I tried). I am not expecting my stepchildren to see me as an authority figure, but some courtesy isn’t hard. Short of just throwing in the towel, what do I do?

Dear Dinnertime,

Right off the top, let me praise you for the phrase “The man could burn water” because I have never heard that before, and I love it!

But seriously, there are two things to address in your letter: first, the simple one, which is the chaos around food and your stepchildren. It sounds as if they don’t live with you but come and go at their whim. As a divorced parent who shares custody, I understand your husband’s wanting to be maximally flexible for your children, even into adulthood, and making sure the kids feel that both parents’ houses are home.

However, you are indeed not asking for the moon here. My daughter texts me if she is with her dad but needs to come over to get something. This is just a basic heads-up and courtesy. It sounds as if your stepchildren can’t handle even this, so I think you have to do what we all do with children who won’t behave: Put them on a schedule. Tell your husband that until they can learn to communicate clearly when they are coming over, they are invited on Tuesdays and Fridays (or whatever days are good for you), and you will plan on them for dinner. They are not to bring guests or surprise you at other times. They are expected to be punctual.

If your husband won’t get behind this … well, we’re on to the other thing in your note. Your husband (and father of your toddler) does not have your back. There is no reason I can see that he should be tolerating his kids’ crap behavior—especially if it’s resulting in him missing out on your cooking! If you two can’t get on the same page about this, I think it’s time to try therapy (if you love him and want to be with him, which is not clear from your letter) or, as you say, throw in the (kitchen) towel.

Although I myself do not smoke, I have a real fetish for women who smoke. I try to always carry cigarettes with me, just in case someone (preferably an attractive female) is looking for one. Well, this plan worked; a single woman bummed a few cigarettes from me, and now something is developing (maybe just a friendship, but I’m hoping for more). When she realizes that I don’t smoke, however, she’ll wonder why I keep cigarettes. Would there be any good way to answer this question without scaring her off?

Social Security scam is hitting inboxes. Here’s what to watch for.

A scam email is making the rounds, most recently to my inbox.

It’s designed to target people who receive Social Security benefits and those who have recently applied.

The subject line said: “Update: New Terms and Conditions for Your Account.”

Like most Americans, I do indeed have an online account with Social Security. But this email had lots of red flags.

Let’s go through them together.

The sender:

The email said it was from the “SSA Application Analytics Team,” but looking at the actual email address showed it had nothing to do with Social Security. This was an imposter scam.

Even if an email address appears to be from the agency, beware. Some scammers will use the words “Social Security” or “SSA” in the actual email address, or misspell those terms, or even use a zero instead of the letter “O” in an attempt to be sly.

The body of the email:

It’s typical for scammers to be located overseas, living in places where English is not their native language. So it’s common for phishing emails to have misspellings or grammatical mistakes.

That wasn’t really the case here.

But in this email, email, there were lots of miscellaneous words smattered through the message, such as “strengthen,” “Israeli,” “shopping” and “sister.” Some were bold, others were italicized. And none of them had anything to do with the message.

This email from a scammer impersonating Social Security had lots of misplaced words in it. Karin Price Mueller

It’s a little unclear what those words were supposed to accomplish, but they certainly made the attempt to impersonate a professional email from the federal government pretty pathetic.

The message, when you take out the miscellaneous words, said:

“Thank you for your recent application. We wanted to inform you that a detailed decision will be sent to you by mail within the next 30 days. Alternatively, you can conveniently check the status of your application online at any time using the link below.”

And then the link — which can be a scammer’s money shot — followed.

Simply put, it wasn’t for the Social Security Administration’s website, which is SSA.gov .

I didn’t click. The link most certainly would have led to malware being downloaded onto my computer. Or just as bad, it would have tried to lure me, and others who received it, into entering personal information that could later be used to steal an unsuspecting consumer’s identity.

We’re not sharing the link here because we don’t want you to be tempted to check it out.

TIPS FROM SOCIAL SECURITY

We sent the email to the folks at the Social Security Administration, who confirmed the email indeed was not from the agency.

It said the Social Security Administration will never:

• Text or email images of an employee’s official government identification.
• Suspend your Social Security number.
• Threaten you with arrest or other legal action unless you immediately pay a fine or fee.
• Require payment by retail gift card, wire transfer, internet currency, or cash by mail.
• Promise a benefit increase or other assistance in exchange for payment.
• Mail or email “official” letters or reports containing your personal information.

It also said it will only send text messages if you have opted in to receive texts from the agency. It will only send texts in “limited situations,” including as part of its “enhanced security” to access your Social Security account online.

Think two-factor authentication.

It won’t ask for money by email or text, it said.

“If you owe money to us, we will mail you a letter with payment options and appeal rights,” the agency said.
