How to Bake a Cake Essay

A cake is often associated with celebrations. While birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, and graduation celebrations, among other similar events, are marked with a variety of food and drinks, cakes remain a key component in such events.

There is nothing more meaningful than making your own cake, for your own friends, for your own special occasion. Allow me to share with you my tried-and-tested recipe for chocolate cake. If it’s your first time, feel free to follow it to the letter, then improvise once you are more comfortable.

To bake this sweet cake, you need the following ingredients:

  • a cup of sugar
  • one-half buttermilk
  • half teaspoon baking powder
  • about a cup of unsweetened cocoa powder
  • an equal amount of room-temperature unsalted butter
  • a quarter teaspoon salt, and a three-quarter cup of flour

For chocolate ice:

  • 200 g of plain chocolate
  • 200 ml of double cream

The Baking Process

To set the scene in the kitchen, preheat your oven to 350 degrees and grease a standard pan with cooking spray, to avoid anything sticking to the pan unnecessarily.

Kick off your baking journey by mixing together your wet ingredients in a bowl: buttermilk, sugar, eggs, butter, and a bit of vanilla extract. Once you have placed all the ingredients together, blend them well with a hand mixer.

Then comes the dry ingredients. Place in another bowl your cocoa powder, salt, baking powder and flour, then stir the mixture slowly but continuously until the ingredients are fully mixed. It is at this point that the dry mixture should be added to the wet mixture. Use a low level to beat the combined mixture until the batter smoothens. The way to check this is to check if the flour is completely dissolved.

Pour proportionately equal amounts of batter into the pans, which should have been greased and floured. Make the most out of the batter and by transferring even the parts that stick to the side of the bowl.

Now it’s time to let the oven do the rest. Put the pan in the oven and let it stay there between 30 and 35 minutes. After checking on your cake every 5 minutes over that duration of time, bring it out and test if it is ready using a toothpick. You know your cake is ready to cool if your toothpick comes out with no remnants of batter.

If more time is needed, you may extend baking time for 2 more minutes, after which the cake should be removed and cooled in pans over the next 5 minutes. It is recommended that they be placed on a wire rack to allow the hot air to escape completely.

One of the last steps involves decoration using frosting or icing. For frosting, ensure that the cake has completely cooled down before applying to avoid the frost melting over the cake.

Alternatively, it can also be iced. Make the icing by placing in the bowl the measured cream and chocolate, then melt them in low heat over a pan filled with hot water. Let the mixture smoothen and thicken by whisking. Afterward, leave it for an hour or two to keep cooling and thickening.

Now, get those blocks nice and loose by passing a round-blade knife through the inside of the tins. Then remove the pieces carefully, spreading a bit of chocolate icing over each cake layer and putting them on top of the other.

Once done, move the finished work to a serving plate completely ice the collective exterior with chocolate icing.

Hopefully, with several rounds of practice, you will master this recipe and even find a way to tweak it to your liking. Once you have perfected your version of the chocolate cake, move on to other flavors to expand your repertoire. The possibilities are endless, yet the process is almost similar. I wish you and your friends the best of luck on your baking journey! May you make many-a-sweet-tooth happy, content, and satisfied with your creations. Have fun!

Short Essay On How To Bake A Cake (Short Essay Sample)

The process of baking cake is a tiring yet fulfilling one. If you have no baking experience, the best way to do this is with friends so that you can learn together. Instead of using cake mix, it is good to make your own cake batter so that you can find a specific recipe that works for you.

What is the best way to go about baking cake? Baking requires you to be precise with your measurements and the order of ingredients. Having said that, it is best to be fully prepared. You can’t “wing” baking; you need to decide first what kind of cake you will be making. Afterward, you should head to your local grocery store for any missing ingredients. Do make sure that you have all the kitchen tools you need, too.

When you are ready, make sure you follow the recipe instructions carefully. Read the directions on how to mix ingredients and what mixing speed to use. Make sure to taste the batter before you pop it into the oven. Of course, the final step is to take out the cake and enjoy eating it!

How To Write An Expository Essay On How To Bake A Cake

When describing a process, it is vital to be as detailed as possible. Imagine that you are taking somebody through a sequence. It is important that you set the direction for the process, go through the process itself and inform the reader what to expect, and give room for the reader to evaluate the outcome. With baking cake or any other food-related sequence, always start by setting the expectation. What does the reader need to prepare? You need to be specific with measurements and varieties here. Does anything need to be preheated or ready-made? Then imagine how you would go through the process yourself and put the experience in words.

How To Write A Process Essay On A Recipe

A process implies order, and this is what your essay will need if you teach readers how to follow a recipe. Keep your language simple and straightforward, and explain any food-making-related terms. You want to assume that the person following your recipe is doing it for the very first time. In explaining certain parts of the recipe, it would also be good to specify the time expectation, meaning the amount of time they should be spending on it. Leave no room for guessing as you want your reader to end up with a delicious and enjoyable dish. You may also infuse fun tips for decorating, styling and plating. Wish them well at the end of their cooking journey.

baking cake process essay

Light, fluffy, and covered in frosting—whether it’s a classic vanilla cake or something for chocolate lovers , a deliciously moist cake is a staple centerpiece for any special occasion. Many of our best cake recipes start with the same method: beating butter or shortening with sugar until it’s fluffy. These cakes are sometimes called creamed cakes, because the fat and sugar are creamed together. Using our Test Kitchen’s tried and true methods, we’ll teach you how to make a homemade cake that's so good everyone will think you bought it from a fancy bakery. While it takes a bit of time, you’re about to learn that none of these steps for making a cake are actually very difficult.

How to Bake a Cake

First you’ll have to choose a recipe. You can keep it simple with a yellow cake (pictured above), or you can choose a slightly showier recipe, like a chocolate devil’s food cake or a vibrant red velvet cake . If you’re not a fan of the traditional frostings, try a German chocolate cake . We also have a few birthday cake recipes for celebratory occasions. The possibilities are almost endless, and these directions will help you make them all, but angel food , pound cakes , sponge cakes , and chiffon cakes require different methods, so read up on those separately.

Step 1: Prepare Baking Pans

No one wants a cake to stick to the pan, so it’s important to prep your pans before pouring in the batter. With the exception of angel food and chiffon cakes, most recipes call for greasing and flouring the pan or lining the pan with waxed or parchment paper.

As for selecting the right type of baking pan to use, our Test Kitchen prefers shiny pans, which absorb less heat and produce a golden crust. Pans with a dark or dull finish absorb more heat and may burn your crust, so if you’re using one of these, reduce your oven temperature by 25°F and check on the cake 3-5 minutes earlier than the recipe suggests.

Step 2: Allow Ingredients to Reach Room Temperature

Many recipes require cake ingredients, such as eggs and butter, to stand at room temperature. This allows the butter to blend easily with other ingredients, and the eggs will yield a higher cake volume. (For food safety reasons, don’t leave the eggs at room temperature for more time than specified in the recipe.)

Test Kitchen Tip: Never use melted butter when softened butter is called for. It will ruin the cake’s texture.

Step 3: Preheat the Oven

When a cake bakes too quickly, it can develop tunnels and cracks; too slowly, and it can be coarse. Allow your oven to preheat for at least 10 minutes, and use an oven thermometer to be sure it’s reached the proper temperature. If you’re using dark cake pans, you’ll want to reduce the oven temperature called for in your recipe by 25°F.

Step 4: Stir Together Dry Ingredients

Dry ingredients usually include flour, baking powder and/or baking soda, and salt. Rather than adding each dry ingredient individually to the batter, whisk them together in a bowl beforehand. That way you’ll know the ingredients will be equally distributed throughout the batter.

Step 5: Combine the Butter and Sugar

Wondering how to make a cake with a light, airy crumb ? Creaming butter and sugar is the most important step. Here’s how:

  • Using an electric mixer ( Target ) on medium to high speed, beat the butter for 30 seconds. Generally, a stand mixer requires a medium speed for this step, but a hand mixer requires a higher speed.
  • Add the sugar (and vanilla if the recipe calls for it) and beat the mixture on medium speed until it is combined and has a light, fluffy texture. This will take 3 to 5 minutes. (Do not cut this short.) Scrape the bowl occasionally while beating. Tiny bubbles will be created as the butter and sugar are combined, which will give your cake that light, fluffy texture.

Step 6: Add Eggs One at a Time

Add the eggs (or egg whites ) one at a time, beating well after each. Their protein creates a structure around the air bubbles that will maintain the texture.

Test Kitchen Tip: Break the eggs individually into a custard cup or small bowl first. This way, if you get shell fragments, you can easily fish them out of the cup, rather than trying to get them out of the batter.

Step 7: Alternate Adding Dry and Wet Ingredients

Alternate between adding some of the dry mixture and some of the milk (or whatever liquid is specified in your recipe) to the butter-egg-sugar mixture, beating on low speed after each addition until everything is combined. Begin and end with the flour mixture, as when liquid is mixed into flour , gluten begins to form. Too much gluten makes for a tough cake, so be sure to start and finish with the flour, and be careful not to overmix once you’ve added liquid.

Test Kitchen Tip: Be careful not to overmix at this stage or you might get elongated, irregular holes in the finished cake.

Step 8: Pour Batter into Pans and Bake

Divide the batter evenly between the baking pans. Use an offset spatula to spread the batter in an even layer. Be sure to spread it to the pan’s edge. Bake your cake according to your recipe’s directions.

Step 9: Check Cake for Doneness

Overbaked cake equals dry cake, and no one wants that. Start checking the cake for doneness after the recipe’s stated minimum baking time, but avoid opening the oven door before then, so that the heat doesn’t escape. For creamed cakes, insert a wooden toothpick near the center of the cake. If the pick comes out clean (with only a crumb or two on it), the cake is done. If there is any wet batter on it, bake the cake for a few minutes more and test in a new spot with a new toothpick.

Step 10: Cool the Cake Layers

Let the cake layers cool in their pans on a wire rack for 10 minutes maximum. To remove the cakes from the pans, run a knife around the edges, which will loosen them from the sides of the pans. Place a wire rack over the top of each cake and flip the pan. Gently lift the pans off, being careful not to tear the edges of the cakes. If you used waxed or parchment paper , carefully peel the paper off the cake.

Allow the cake to cool completely (about 1 hour). This is a key step to letting the cake firm up, making it less likely to break apart as you frost it. (And it keeps the frosting from melting as soon as you spread it!)

Step 11: Assemble the Cake

To avoid crumbs in your frosting, brush the cake layers with a pastry brush. Spread about a ½ cup of frosting over the first layer, then carefully top it with the next layer. Repeat until all the layers are stacked.

Test Kitchen Tip: It takes about 2½ to 3 cups of icing to generously fill and frost a two-layer, 9-inch cake. For a three-layer cake, plan on using 3½ to 4 cups.

Step 12: Add the First Coat of Frosting

The secret to knowing how to frost a layer cake is a crumb coat. To do this, spread a very thin layer of frosting over the sides and top of the cake. This initial coat doesn’t need to look perfect; it’s another way to keep the crumbs out of the frosting. Let the cake stand for 30 minutes so the frosting sets up.

Test Kitchen Tip: For a quick cleanup, tuck small pieces of waxed paper around and under the first layer, which should be on a cake pedestal or cake plate.

Step 15: Frost and Decorate

Using an offset spatula or table knife, generously spread the remaining frosting over the top and sides of the cake, swirling as you go. Once the cake is completely covered, go back and add more swirls as desired. Serve the cake within 2 hours or store in the refrigerator..

Now that you know how to make a cake from scratch, keep practicing your cake decorating skills at home with different colored frosting , piping techniques, and toppings. For more cake ideas, here are some easy and elegant cake recipes to inspire your next baking session.

Bake a Cake in 10 Steps

A Quick Guide to the Fundamentals of Cake

The Basics of Baking a Cake

When kids get interested in helping their parents in the kitchen, one of the first things they want to do is to help bake a cake . It's a good choice because cake baking is often an easy, direct process and many recipes follow the same basic steps every time. Knowing the fundamentals allows you to approach making a cake from scratch with great confidence. For this step-by-step example, a chocolate cake is on the menu.

Grease and Preheat

Before you begin baking, grease and flour the pans you are using. These could be 8-inch round pans, 9-inch rounds , a 13" x 9" rectangular sheet, or even a Bundt pan. Then preheat the oven to the temperature as directed in the recipe so that it's ready to bake when you are.

Prepare Your Ingredients

It's important to have all of the ingredients prepared before making the batter. Many cake recipes call for melted chocolate, so you should do that before beginning to mix up the batter. To melt chocolate , you can use a microwave or a double boiler on the stovetop, the traditional method.

Other ingredient preparation could include chopping nuts or grating of lemon or orange zest.

Whisk the Dry Mix

It's important to correctly measure and then mix the dry ingredients completely so the cake will have an even and proper rise. Use a wire whisk to combine the flour with the leavening agents for a best results.

Cream Your Butter and Sugar

Bring the butter to room temperature before you begin baking. When it has reached the proper temperature, beat it until it's creamy . Slowly add the sugar as you cream your butter if using a stand mixer. If you're using an electric beater or mixing by hand, add a little of the sugar at a time and then mix until you have incorporated the full amount.

Add the Eggs

Add the eggs to the butter and sugar mixture, one at a time, and mix well until blended.

It's Time to Combine

For a chocolate cake , this is generally when the chocolate, flour, and milk are added to the butter and sugar mixture. First, start with the melted chocolate. Be sure to incorporate it completely with the combined butter, sugar, and eggs.

Then, alternately add the dry ingredients and milk to your wet ingredients. Mix well until it is smooth and uniform. Some recipes suggest you wait until the end to add milk; follow your specific recipe for best results.

Pour Your Batter in Your Pan

If making a layer cake, carefully divide the batter between two round cake pans. If you're using a rectangular or Bundt pan, scoop out all of your batter into your prepared pan of choice. Gently tap the pans on the counter to even the tops and remove air bubbles. If necessary, use a spatula to smooth the tops before baking.

Bake and Cool Your Cakes

Bake the cakes according to the time and temperature in your recipe directions. Remove from the oven and cool on a rack for 10 minutes or as directed in your recipe. Remove the cakes from the pans and cool completely on wire racks before adding  frosting . Make sure the top layer isn't upside down on the rack; otherwise, there will be grid lines on the top of the cake.

The Finished Product

Once the cakes are completely cool, it's time to frost them. Choose from basic buttercream icing , cream cheese frosting, ganache , or whipped cream. If you have two round cakes, put one top side down on the serving platter and frost it. Then put the second cake on top and frost the top and sides. Make swirls as decoration, if desired.

How to Write a Process Essay

baking cake process essay

The process essay, also known as the "how-to" essay, is commonly written for people or companies that need tutorials or a set of instructional steps. Whether it's building a robot or cooking a chocolate cake, process essays use a similar format for any variations. They follow a step-by-step style, with the initial step influencing the second, which influences the third, and so on. Each step carries its own importance, and a poor explanation of one step can ruin the entire process. It's important to stay concise and efficient. However, before you begin writing your essay, you should do some small preparations. Let's discover them with our research writing service .

What Is a Process Paper?

A process essay is a type of essay that explains a process step by step and gives guidance for a certain process, working mechanism, procedure, etc. Process essays range from very simple ones, such as instructions for how to ride a bicycle, to more complex ones, such as a chemistry lab report of an oxidative reaction experiment. The goal of a process paper is to give its readers guidance and directions.

A process paper is characterized, first of all, by explaining a process using a description. Some words that are frequently used in process essays are “further”, “then”, “next”, “first”, “last”, “finally”, and “initially”. It is really important to remember that every process essay includes features, such as:

  • clear and straightforward narration - the last thing you want to do is to confuse your reader with complex language and an unorganized thought thread;
  • chronological order - avoid skipping steps and shifting them around, as it will result in misunderstanding and frustration for the readers;
  • transition words - make sure to separate the next step from the previous ones by using transition words;
  • descriptions of the steps - make sure your steps are clear and easy to follow.

There are several types of process essays. The first one is directional - it explains the “how to” for something. It can take on a wide range of subjects, such as how to apply for a credit card, how to get your driver’s license, how to plan a wedding, etc. The outcome of the directional essay should be a result. In the cases of the examples above: a credit card, a driver’s license, or a carefully planned wedding. The other type of process paper is informational - it explains how something works. Here are some examples: how a weather forecast is determined, how a space rocket works, how intermittent fasting changes your body, etc. An informational essay explains something to a reader and does not necessarily end up with a result, like directional does.

Another type of essay that is similar to a process essay is a process analysis essay. The biggest difference is that a process analysis essay not only explains the steps, but also analyses them in depth. It has all of the characteristics of a process essay, although goes into more detail about the causes and consequences of every step.

If you need any additional information for process analysis essays, check out our article: HOW TO WRITE A PROCESS ANALYSIS ESSAY

Writing a process essay is not extremely difficult. By following simple rules and a set of steps, a successful, well-structured essay can be guaranteed.

Prepare The Small Stuff

Here we gathered some small general tips and advice that you should follow throughout your writing process to make sure that all of the expectations of a process paper are met.

  • Determine the Audience's Skill Level. It's important to base the level of complexity of the essay on who the readers will be. For example, if you need to teach a friend how to do a simple fix or create a certain tool, then it would be most reasonable to stick to more basic terminology. However, if you are writing an essay for your astrophysics professor about the creation of a black hole in the universe, use more sophisticated and informative terminology.
  • Make a List of Materials. Obviously, the creation of anything comes with some prerequisites. Whether it's items or ideas, the importance of knowing the necessities beforehand and having them ready to go is essential. Make sure to place each item in accordance with its importance. The more impactful a part is, the higher up on the list it should be.
  • Write out Each Task. In a step-by-step tutorial, each individual task carries some sort of weight. Since an entire process can not be complete if a step is skipped, it's crucial to write out every single step. However, don't go overboard in your explanations. It's not necessary to bring the tutorial to a microscopic level, but each step should be understandable and competent.

Process Essay Topics

Choosing a topic for a process paper can be quite challenging. A good place to start is with your passions. If you pick something you are excited about, you can make it interesting for your readers and fun for yourself to write about. If your professor limits you to write a process essay on something you have very little knowledge of, choose a topic that is intriguing and triggers your interest. Then, conduct enough thorough research to make sure you understand everything perfectly before you go ahead and try to explain it to someone else.

How to Pick a Process Analysis Essay Topic

Another very important thing to consider while writing a process essay is your audience. It is highly unlikely that college students are interested in instructions for “How to Get Into Your Dream School” or “How to Pass Your SATs”. Make sure your topic relates to the subject you are studying and you are following your professor’s prompt guidelines.

Here are some ideas that might be of interest for you:

  • How to lose weight on a keto diet
  • How your immune system fights COVID-19
  • How to start selling on Amazon
  • How to improve your credit score
  • How to decrease your social media usage
  • How to apply for unemployment insurance
  • How to improve your college performance
  • How to open your first bank account

It's important to note that these essay topics are just some common examples used by several college students for their course papers. Feel free to use any one of them if you want, or think of one on your own. Just make sure it's a PROCESS!

Process Essay Outline

Most essay outlines follow the standard scheme: Intro > Body Paragraphs > Conclusion . follow the standard scheme: Intro > Body Paragraphs > Conclusion. A good process essay outline should look like this:

WRITING A PROCESS ANALYSIS ESSAY

  • Introduction — brief your reader on your topic, explain why you have chosen it and how you are planning to approach the explanation of the process.
  • Body — the biggest part of your essay that should be divided into paragraphs for easier understanding and structure. Make sure each paragraph is flowing smoothly into the next one with connective words.

Paragraph 1. First step of the process. Explain what the step is, what the best way to perform it is, and how to avoid common mistakes when doing it.

Paragraph 2. The next step of the process (the same as in Paragraph 1). Thoroughly explain what this step is about.

  • Conclusion . Here you need to explain why your instructions are valuable. It is your opportunity to persuade your reader(s) that the steps you presented and the process they learned will be useful for them in the future.

Every process is different: some can take a couple of minutes, while others can take months or years to complete. The length of the essay is generally based on the difficulty and number of steps it takes. However, the structure doesn't maneuver.

Introduction

The first thing that you want to do as a writer for your process paper is to help your readers be interested in your individual process. Be descriptive about it, paint a picture for your readers. A joke or a personal reference can be a great attention grabber and can pull your reader right in. For somebody to be keen on approaching your process, they have to express interest in it. Though, it generally goes without saying that many writers ignore this fact. Let's break it down into subsections:

  • Give a little bit of historical background. People often want to know the origins of whatever it is that they're working on. Introducing this part of the process helps to intrigue your readers, as well as give them a sense of purpose for the task.
  • Create an approximate timeframe. Unfortunately, your readers don't have all day to spend on this one event. In addition to learning about its purpose, people want to know how long the task will take. This way, they can decide how to break up the work. If it's a quick fix, then they can knock it out in one session. However, if it's a large-scale operation, then your readers will obviously have to create their own time schedule.
For example, let’s say that the topic of your essay is “How to Save Money”. You can start the introduction of your process essay by explaining that as a college student, you often find yourself in need of extra money and you are stuck with bad money habits. This will create a good connection with your readers, because almost everyone has been in a situation of needing to be savvy with their finances. Another thing you can mention is the importance of saving money and the multiple opportunities it presents, such as being able to invest it, being able to pay off a credit card debt, or being able to save up to avoid taking out a student loan.

Body Paragraphs

This is the point in the process essay where you start introducing the step-by-step process your readers will need to take. A lot of the time, it helps to break down each process into subsections. For example, if a step has many parts to it, it would be clever to create a paragraph on its own just for that step. Remember, it's important to keep things smooth and efficient. Break down the body paragraphs in unity with the steps. Let's go into more detail about each step:

Each step should be carefully explained.  Every step will vary in length. Think about it: every instruction manual has several steps. Some are more difficult to comprehend or perform than others. For this reason, create your steps and explanations accordingly. You should be able to get a sense of their length and difficulty based on the explanation.

Don't forget to explain the purpose.  People don't want orders barked at them aimlessly. Besides just accomplishing a task, people want to learn as they perform.

  • Why did they do this?
  • What was the purpose of this method?
  • Why did we do it this way and not this other way?

To make everything flow smoothly use transitions.  Make the steps flow one after another to create a well-structured essay. As you introduce the next step, consider using transition words like “next”, “now”, “then”, “so that”, etc.

Before writing the steps out in full sentences, it is a great idea to create an outline for your body paragraphs. Here is an outline for the body paragraphs of a process essay on “How to Save Money”:

Paragraph 1:

  • keep track of your expenses
  • organize your collected data
  • decide what you can skimp on in your spendings

Paragraph 2:

  • create a realistic budget
  • check weekly to ensure you are sticking to it
  • save 15% of every monthly income
  • set a tangible goal for saving, such as a car

These process essay examples use only two body paragraphs, but feel free to include more to ensure a better understanding and cohesive flow for your paper. Although, do not include excessive unnecessary details that clutter your essay and make understanding it even more difficult. While writing your essay, include small brief explanations for each statement. For example, “Even though eating out and grabbing a coffee on your way to class sounds tempting, setting a budget and saving 15% of each of your monthly earnings aside can help you have enough to put down a downpayment on a new car.” Here the reader will understand that there is a direct relationship between each step and the result it is going to give.

Showing the readers that they are learning and not just repeating is one of the most effective ways to lock down their attention and keep them coming back!

After going through every step meticulously and explaining the whole process, a process essay needs a confident conclusion. This paragraph should be short, sweet, and to the point. It's main goal is to accomplish the following tasks:

  • Discuss the main result. After the readers have completed the process, they should be left with a final result. It's important that you explain to your readers what the end result will look like, and what can be done with it.
  • Restate the process’s general purpose. After completing the task, you obviously would like to know its overall purpose. When your readers feel that they have accomplished a challenge, learned something from it, and have a path to take the result towards, they will be satisfied!
  • State your Overall Conclusion. To put a pretty tie around your process essay means that you need to neatly wrap things up! Restate some of the highlightable points as well as the process’s key overall purpose. Make sure that your readers feel accomplished after going through your process, and  ensure that you strengthen the necessity of its purpose with a nice concluding sentence!

The conclusion of an essay on “How to Save Money” would explain that the completion of all of the steps will result in saving money that can be used for a specific goal or for rainy day fund purposes. You can mention the importance of every step and briefly repeat some of the key points.

Post-Writing Tips

Here are some final tips to wrap up your writing process. Use them as a checklist for a successful and coherent essay.

  • Make sure the work is simple enough to follow. Worst-case-scenario: its author creates a feeling of absolute confusion in the reader’s mind. To avoid this problem, always remember that your readers can be beginners. Do not try to impress them with complicated words or sentences, use simple language to provide clear directions on how to do something. Give as many details as possible, but do it plainly. "Why is he making me do this?" "What was the purpose of this?" "I don't understand this step at all!" If the reader is asking themself these questions, then it's time to do some editing!
  • Experiment and try it for yourself or ask a friend. There's no better way to experience success than to actively attempt your process through your own instructions. If everything truly makes sense, then you should have no problem solving the task using your own words. Even better, ask a peer to try it through your words to get an outside point of view.
  • Choose the right topic for you and research it well
  • Maintain a logical order of steps, make it easy to follow
  • Avoid using imperative sentences - you do not want to sound like an Apple TV manual
  • Explain terms that are most likely outside of most people’s range of common knowledge

Metaphor For Writing Process: BAKING A CAKE

Writing is very similar to baking a cake. The first thing you have to do is make sure you have all of your ingredients. For baking this means cake mix, oil, eggs, water, baking pan etc. For writing this means an introductory sentence, a thesis, a claim, evidence, analysis, and the list can go on forever.

After acquiring all of the ingredients, one is able to start mixing everything together carefully. Keep in mind, you want to mix the cake ingredients so that they mix well when blended. For example, mix dry ingredients together and wet ingredients together. This is the same way I start to mix my “literary ingredients.” I add each element so that it flows well and makes since to the reader.

After mixing you are ready to bake! Baking for me while writing means getting my essay/paper peer reviewed a few times to get a fresh point of view and to make sure it is free of errors. This equivalent to taste testing your batter before putting it in the oven. Just to be extra sure everything comes out right.

Once your cake is done baking it is time to ice! Icing a cake does not make it only look great, but taste great too! At this point, I make sure  that I have a correct bibliography as well as in-text citations to go along with them. This is essentially the icing on the cake.

My writing is similar to baking a cake. It is simply a process, where everything must be done correctly in order for things to come out right.

Cake Baking Process

It is undebatable that cake baking is usually a challenging task, especially for beginners. However, with the required equipment, ingredients, and step by step guide, the baking process becomes more comfortable. Therefore, this essay seeks to provide a step by step guidance to beginners on how to prepare a simple cake. Before beginning to bake, one must have at his or her disposal, all the required ingredients, and equipment. Once these are ready, the baking process can begin. Usually, it begins by preheating the oven to room temperature.  Secondly, all the ingredients, including chocolates or fruits, must be prepared. After this, all the dry ingredients must be mixed and placed in a container. Then, you should make the butter-sugar mixture to which all other ingredients are then added. Once this is done, the baking can begin. Usually, baking takes approximately 20-0 minutes under a temperature of 180 degrees Celsius. Once it is ready, the cake should be left to cool before it can be frosted. The baking ends here; however, you can proceed to modify or decorate your cake as you wish.

For beginners, baking a cake is usually a challenge. One of the primary reasons for this is typically the lack of someone or instructions to guide them. However, baking a cake is never a difficult task provided someone has the required ingredients and the directions or guide on how to bake a cake. Therefore, this essay sought to guide the beginners on how to bake a simple cake. Kindly follow carefully to the last step.

Before anything, gather ingredients for baking cake. Before anything, the first thing an individual must have at his or her disposal are the required ingredients for baking a cake. For this baking, the fundamental ingredients include a quarter cup of milk, vanilla essence (one tablespoon), cocoa powder (two tablespoons), three eggs, 100 grams of cooking oil, 100 grams of caster/plain sugar, 100 grams or a three-quarter cup of flour.

With the required ingredients ready, here are the steps of baking a cake:

Step One: Prepare all the equipment. Apart from the ingredients, one needs baking equipment. What exactly is required? There must be a pan. The size can vary depending on the required size of the cake; however, sizes such as 13-inch rounds, 9-inch rounds, 8-inch rounds would be appropriate. The pan to be used must be greased and floured.

Step Two: Temperature. You should ensure you preheat your oven before beginning to bake. Notably, this ensures that after preparing the ingredients or once the ingredients are ready for baking, there will be no need to preheat the oven once again.

Step Three: Prepare the ingredients. Before making the batter, you should ensure that you prepare all the ingredients. Since we are using chocolate, we need to melt it before using it. For melting, we will use either a saucepan or a microwave. Other ingredients requiring slicing or cutting such as oranges, lemon (if you decide to use to bake your cake) should also be prepared.

Step Four: Mix all the ingredients (dry cake ingredients): Measure correctly and mix all the dry cake ingredients thoroughly. Failure to measure accurately or mix completely, your cake might not rise evenly or adequately. For proper mixing, you can use leavening ingredients and wire whisk to combine the ingredients.

Step Five: Butter and sugar: Before baking, you must ensure that you bring the butter to be used to room temperature.  It has to be creamy consistently. Only then you will slowly add the sugar while gently mixing the two ingredients. If having trouble adding the sugar gradually, try adding it in small portions while ensuring one portion is mixed well before adding the next.

Step Six: Eggs. Ensure the eggs to be used are also at room temperature. Then to the butter-sugar mix, add the eggs.

Step Seven: Time for milk, flour, and chocolate. In this stage, start with the melted chocolate and add it to the mixture of butter, sugar, and eggs. Mix it properly. Then add and mix the remaining ingredients, including flour, milk, and any other. Mix until it is smooth.

Step Eight: Put batter in pan. Divide your batter into the sizes of two round cake pans. Gently tap the “pans on the counter to the tops.” Then smooth the top using a spatula. It is to ensure that when the cake is ready, it stays smooth.

Step Nine: Baking process: Since we already have our oven preheated, we can go ahead and bake the cake for about 20-30 minutes under a temperature of 180 degrees Celsius. Once it is ready, leave the cake to cool for ten minutes. Then remove the cake from the pan and let it cool completely before frosting. While on the rack, kindly ensure that the top layer is not placed upside-down.

Step ten: Finish. Once the cake is completely cool, frost it. After this process, you can modify your cake as you want. You may add some ganache, cream cheese frosting, or even butter icing. Also, you can decorate it anyhow.

Plus, the kids learn how to follow the direct fundamentals and approaches that are essential to creating a wondrous thing from scratch. In the future, they also know to approach various basics with confidence.

Ideally, the process of baking a birthday cake is relatively easy. At first, you may feel a bit intimidated, especially if it's your first time. On that note, below is a step by step guide on how to make one and what you will need:

Gather the Basic Ingredients

If it’s your first time to prepare a birthday cake, you may need to go for something less sophisticated yet intriguing at the same time. A good example is a double-layered vanilla birthday cake. Well, below is more insight into how to bake a birthday cake:

For the cake, you’ll need:

  • Two and a quarter cups baking flour
  • Half cup Butter
  • One cup Sugar
  • Two cups Milk
  • Three teaspoons Baking powder
  • One teaspoon salt
  • One teaspoon flavor (vanilla)
  • Sprinkles (optional)

For the icing, you'll need:

  • Vanilla extract flavoring- 4 tsp.
  • Milk- 5 to 9 tbsp.
  • Butter- 2 sticks
  • Confectioner’s sugar- 6 cups

Prepare Birthday Cake Batter

1) In one large bowl, mix the dry ingredients. Stir them to obtain a fine blend of particles.

2) In a separate bowl, add eggs, flavor, and milk. Combine them well.

3) Add half amount of the wet mixture above into the first bowl. Stir the ingredients well.

4) Add the remaining wet mixture to obtain a smooth and thoroughly blended batter. Mix it for five minutes.

5) Prepare your cake pan of the desired size. This is done by adding flour or spraying the inner parts with cooking oil. Ideally, you choose your pan, depending on the cake mix that you’ve prepared. In this case, you can go with two pans. Put a parchment layer on each pan. At this point, you can add a little color, garnish and spice to your cake batter with the tiny ball rainbow sprinkles.  Fold the sprinkles into the mix slowly to prevent bleeding a lot of color into it.

6) Pour half of the mix into each parched cake pan

7) Prepare a clean oven and preheat it at 350C. Bake the batter in the oven for half an hour. The cake should cook until the color changes to light brown. Check if it is done by inserting a spatula in the cake while in the oven. The spatula should emerge clean. Similarly, you can give the cake a slight press to see if it springs back.

8) Remove the two pieces from the oven and leave each pan to cool.

Move onto the Icing

The amount of icing that you prepare depends on your cake size. For instance, a double-layered cake would require a little more icing. If you need less for icing preference, you can add always half the ingredients to what suits you best.

1) Add half a cup of confectioner’s sugar and softened butter in one large bowl.

2) Mix the two ingredients until they become soft and fluffy. Add half milk and butter flavoring and the remaining sugar. Beat the mixtures to obtain a smooth, creamy icing.

Add Frosting

3) Add a fair amount of icing onto the first piece, top side up. Spread the icing evenly without touching the actual cake. At this time, you want to avoid cake crumbs mixing with your icing.

4) Once you’re done, place the other layer onto the iced one, top side down. Add another huge amount of icing on top and spread it on. Smoothen the sides. You can also add a few sprinkles to the icing to get it done. Chill the cake for a few hours after you’re done to harden the icing. Finally, you can place it in a box to add a bit of a surprise. The cake box should be of a suitable size to fit the cake. Similarly, the box can be plain white or light-colored.
