Program overview. The Master of Social Work (MSW) is a nationally-accredited program that prepares students for advanced professional practice in social work. The thesis-based route is designed for students who intend to pursue doctoral studies and/or anticipate a career requiring advanced program evaluation and research skills.

Schedule your thesis defence. You must complete an oral examination to defend your thesis. Your supervisor is responsible for booking the defence and coordinating your examination committee. Your examination committee must be appointed at least one month before your oral examination. Prepare for your big day.

The MSW thesis-based program in all three specializations is offered by distance (online) learning with required virtual and in-person campus residencies in Calgary or Edmonton. Failure to attend residencies may result in a student being withdrawn from the course(s) or program.
Master of Social Work- Non-social work degree
Thesis-based. The specialization consists of 10 courses (30 units) followed by thesis research and oral examination. 4 courses of Advanced Social Work Practice (12 units), 4 Specialization courses (topics vary from year to year) (12 units), and. 2 Thesis research courses (6 units). The four specialization courses focus on the area you've chosen.
