The introduction to your thesis gives an overview of its basics or main points. It should answer the following questions:

  • What is being studied?

In answering the first question, you should know what your personal interest in this topic is and why it is relevant. Why does it matter?

To answer the "how", you should briefly explain how you are going to reach your research goal. Some prefer to answer that question in the methods chapter, but you can give a quick overview here.

A literature review is often part of the introduction, but it can be a separate section. It is an evaluation of previous research on the topic showing that there are gaps that your research will attempt to fill. A few tips for your literature review:

  • Use a wide array of sources
  • Show both sides of the coin
  • Make sure to cover the classics in your field
  • Present everything in a clear and structured manner

The methodology chapter outlines which methods you choose to gather data, how the data is analyzed and justifies why you chose that methodology . It shows how your choice of design and research methods is suited to answering your research question.

Make sure to also explain what the pitfalls of your approach are and how you have tried to mitigate them. Discussing where your study might come up short can give you more credibility, since it shows the reader that you are aware of its limitations.

Tip: Use graphs and tables, where appropriate, to visualize your results.

The results chapter outlines what you found out in relation to your research questions or hypotheses. It generally contains the facts of your research and does not include a lot of analysis, because that happens mostly in the discussion chapter.

Clearly visualize your results, using tables and graphs, especially when summarizing, and be consistent in your way of reporting. This means sticking to one format to help the reader evaluate and compare the data.

The discussion chapter includes your own analysis and interpretation of the data you gathered , comments on your results and explains what they mean. This is your opportunity to show that you have understood your findings and their significance.

Point out the limitations of your study, provide explanations for unexpected results, and note any questions that remain unanswered.

This is probably your most important chapter. This is where you highlight that your research objectives have been achieved. You can also reiterate any limitations to your study and make suggestions for future research.

Remember to check if you have really answered all your research questions and hypotheses in this chapter. Your thesis should be tied up nicely in the conclusion and show clearly what you did, what results you got, and what you learned. At the end of your thesis, you’ll have to compile a list of references for everything you’ve cited above. Ideally, you should keep track of everything from the beginning. Otherwise, this could be a mammoth and pretty laborious task to do.

Objectives of a bachelor’s thesis and the supervisor’s responsibilities at the different stages of the thesis process.

With a bachelor’s thesis, students demonstrate their ability to apply their acquired knowledge and skills, engage in scientific or artistic thinking and activities and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, in their mother tongue. Students typically attend a bachelor's thesis seminar while working on their bachelor’s thesis.

Students write their bachelor’s thesis under the supervision of a member of teaching and research staff who holds at least a master’s degree and is familiar with the topic and field of the thesis and the relevant assessment criteria. The supervisor is expected to offer advice on the academic content of the work and the research process and support the student throughout the project.   

The stages of a bachelor’s thesis process are outlined below: 

The supervisor and student must discuss the student's goals and expectations for the thesis and the relevant assessment criteria. The role of a supervisor is to guide and support the student in the process of engaging in scientific inquiry and the development of scientific thinking. Students are entitled to a reasonable level of supervision. Supervisors and students should be familiar with their respective roles and responsibilities in the thesis process.

Academic guidance and counselling

The supervisor is a person who is a member of the University’s teaching and research staff, holds at least a master’s degree and is familiar with the field and topic of the thesis as well as the assessment criteria of theses. The supervisor’s task is to support the preparation of your thesis in terms of content and research process at the different stages of working on the thesis. In the seminar, you are assigned a thesis supervisor based on your topic.

Discuss with your supervisor the goals and assessment criteria of the thesis as well as your goals relative to the assessment criteria. As the supervisory process starts, you draw up a supervisory plan detailing the aims, schedule and language of the thesis. A common understanding of the scientific requirements of the thesis and of good scientific practice is also formed. The timing of supervision and the stages of the thesis process are also agreed upon.

Your own work and mastering the scientific thinking and practices supported by the supervision is at the core of the supervision process of a Bachelor’s thesis. You are entitled to a reasonable amount of supervision. A sensible number of supervisors is determined in accordance with the faculty’s guidelines and the work plans of the teaching staff.

Other help and support during the writing of a thesis

You are not alone with your thesis. Support is available, for example, on information searching and data management as well as writing and making progress . Support is offered by the University’s joint counselling services, Language Centre and Library and Data Service.

Thesis as work done in pairs or groups

Make an agreement with your supervisor if you want to do the thesis work in a pair or a group. If the thesis is undertaken in a pair or a group, each student must be able to demonstrate his/her own share of the work because the thesis is fundamentally about practising independent scientific work. The thesis is assessed for each student individually.

Language of the thesis

The language of the Bachelor’s thesis is either Finnish, the language defined in the curriculum or the main language used in the studies. The responsible supervisor decides on the use of other languages. 

A student studying in an English-language degree programme may write his/her thesis in Finnish. However, if the student wants his/her academic record to show that he/she has earned the degree in English, an English-language thesis may be required. 

Students must demonstrate language and communication skills in their field in connection to their thesis. The demonstration of language skills in relation to the thesis is described in more detail in the section on the maturity test.

Thesis seminar

The thesis seminar focuses on the scientific requirements and good scientific practices of the thesis, academic writing and language and communication skills, information seeking, and scientific debate through peer learning. The seminar, together with other supervision, supports the student’s independent work on the thesis. The aim should be to complete the thesis during the seminar. 

Adherence to good scientific practice

Learning outcomes related to good scientific practice are included in all theses and the seminars cover the topic. Review the guidelines for sound scientific practice and, if necessary, seek guidance from your supervisor. As part of supervising the writing process, the supervisor should ensure that you are familiar with good scientific practice and able to act accordingly.

The originality check of a thesis

During the writing process, you may use the originality check tool that is found on your supervisor’s Turnitin section on Moodle. It will give you a comparative report on your text that helps you to evaluate the appropriateness of your citation practices. You can always ask your thesis supervisor for advice on interpreting the comparison report.

The student and the thesis supervisor agree about the point when the thesis is ready for the official originality check and the subsequent assessment proper. You enter the text of your completed thesis in the originality checking software and the supervisor reviews the originality report. After the supervisor has checked the originality report, you may submit the thesis for the actual assessment process.

From 1 August 2019, the electronic originality check is done to all theses and dissertations at Tampere University.

Commissioned theses

The thesis can be done as a commissioned study for a principal that can be a company or another party. The thesis is a piece of scientific work that is evaluated according to academic criteria. Thus, the principal must also be aware of the academic nature of the work and the publicity of the completed thesis. The student, the supervisor and the principal agree on the topic, schedule and objectives of the thesis. The responsible supervisor at the University is in charge of the scientific supervision of the thesis. The principal may appoint a contact person to deal with matters related to the thesis. The principal may also participate in the supervision of the thesis. The student agrees in writing with the principal on any fee paid to the student. 

As a basis for such discussions, a guideline has been drawn up that applies to Master’s theses but which can also be applied to Bachelor’s theses.

Copyright of the thesis

Copyright issues are also related to the publicity of the thesis. The student is responsible for the contents of the thesis and ascertaining his/her rights to it. The author of a published thesis must have full copyright to the thesis, including any pictorial, table or other material included in it, or have the right to publish such material online.

Publicity and confidentiality of the thesis

Under law, a thesis is a public document (1999/621). A thesis becomes public as soon as it has been approved. Confidential information cannot be included in a thesis. Publishing the thesis or its parts elsewhere – for example as articles – does not change the publicity requirement.  

If confidential information is processed in relation to the thesis, its use should be prearranged with the supervisor and the possible principal. The actual thesis should be written in a manner that allows the publication of all parts. The possible confidential information should be incorporated in the appendices or background data that are not published. Such separate data is not archived at the University.

Submitting the thesis for assessment

Make an agreement with your supervisor on submitting the thesis for assessment. By submitting your Bachelor’s thesis for assessment, you also confirm that the originality check has also been completed. You also decide what kind of a publication permission you give for your thesis.

Submit the thesis for evaluation via the Library’s publishing archive Trepo . Use your tuni basic user account to login via Haka login. After the Library’s inspection (within 3 working days), the publication archive sends a message to both the student and the faculty saying that the thesis has been submitted. It is the student’s responsibility to inform the supervisor that he/she has submitted the thesis for evaluation. The supervisor gets the thesis from the publication archive. Please note that you must be registered as present in order to submit a thesis on Trepo.

If there is any suspicion of fraud in a thesis that has been submitted for examination, the matter is dealt with in line with the University’s protocol on suspected fraud.

Assessment and grading of the thesis

The examiner of the thesis has 21 days to assess your thesis after you have submitted it for assessment (i.e. when you have sent the link from the Library to the examiner) or 28 days if you are taking the maturity test in connection with the examination of your thesis.  The results on theses submitted for examination during the period from 1 June to 31 August may take longer to be published. For justified reasons, the Dean may make an exception to the deadline. Students are informed about such exceptions in advance.   

The Faculty Council decides on the assessment criteria of theses. Bachelor’s theses are assessed with the grading scale of 0 – 5. In addition, the examiner issues a written statement. The grades are 1 (sufficient), 2 (satisfactory), 3 (good), 4 (very good) and 5 (excellent). 

A student cannot submit a new thesis to replace an already approved one.

Electronic archiving and publishing of the thesis

All Bachelor’s theses are electronically archived and stored for ten years. Tampere University’s Library is in charge of archiving theses and dissertations on the university’s publication database. 

All theses and dissertations are public and stored on the university’s publication database Trepo. According to the University’s strategic alignment on open science, all theses and dissertations are openly published unless the publisher’s conditions prevent it. All theses may be read with the computers in the Library and online if the student has granted permission to publish on the internet.

After approval, all theses are stored in the comparison database of the originality checking software.

Bachelor Thesis

Ba philosophy.

To finish the Bachelor's degree programme in Philosophy, a Bachelor's thesis must be written within the framework of a seminar of the elective modules 1-12 (see § 7 of the curriculum). Other courses such as proseminars and lectures are not eligible. The Bachelor's thesis replaces a seminar paper, if any, and its assessment is included in the seminar grade. It corresponds to 10 ECTS, which are added to the 5 ECTS of the seminar.

Students can choose the seminar in question themselves, but need to inform the course director before the end of the seminar in order to discuss the topic and timetable. Since the assessment of the Bachelor's thesis is included in the seminar grade, the course may not have already been graded before the Bachelor's thesis was written.

The length of the Bachelor thesis should be 9000 to 15000 words including bibliography (i.e. 30-50 pages, if one page contains 300 words). It must be submitted to the course director together with an affidavit. The template for the affidavit can be found on this page , along with other forms.

The Bachelor's Thesis Verification Form is filled out by the student and signed by the course director after grading. It can be submitted either by the institute or by the student to the Examinations Office.

A positive assessment of the Bachelor thesis requires correct spelling and correct citation. In case of ambiguities, we recommend the book Wissenschaftliches Arbeiten im Philosophiestudium  (UTB) by Flatscher/Posselt/Weiberg in addition to the documents from the SL "Einführung in die Philosophie". The Bachelor's thesis is subject to a plagiarism check by the seminar leader.

Curricular basis (version from the 1.10.2021)

SE seminar with Bachelor's thesis Theoretical and methodological discussion of research questions in ethics or ethics didactics; a Bachelor's thesis is to be written as part of the seminar, to which 7 (of a total of 9) ECTS-Credits are allocated. (Note: 7 ECTS correspond to 175 working hours). Learning objective of the module Graduates will be able to apply the theoretical and methodological tools of ethics to a limited set of questions. Prerequisite : positive completion of compulsory modules 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.

  • Topic : The thesis can be written on a topic from either ethics or ethics didactics, depending on the course offered.
  • Courses offered : The BA seminar is offered in the summer semester. If possible, there is one subject-related and one subject-didactic seminar. Please note the orientation. Please note: A first BA seminar will be offered in the winter semester 24/25.
  • Supervision : The thesis will be supervised by the head of the BA seminar.
  • Scope (excl. bibliography and appendix): A guideline of 20-30 pages (6000-9000 words) applies.
  • Deadline : The thesis is usually submitted by the end of the semester. Exceptions can only be granted by the seminar leader.

Example of the possible structure of a thesis report

It is not possible to present detailed instructions for the structure of the text chapters of the thesis because theses are different in type, e.g., project-like or exploratory theses. However, all kinds of theses always have a framework consisting of an introduction, the processing of the matter, as well as the conclusions and/or a discussion. These sections are structured into chapters and subchapters in an appropriate way and headed as illustratively as possible.

In the reporting of the thesis, the Instructions for Written Work of Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences are observed.

The thesis shall include a title page, abstracts in Finnish and English, a table of contents, a list of the terms and abbreviations used (if there are many of them),  a list of the figures, pictures and tables (in case the thesis includes many figures, pictures, or tables). The introduction is chapter 1, after introduction is a presentation of related previous research and development knowledge and possible theoretical knowledge, problem setting (presentation of the goals and research problems or development tasks of the thesis), a presentation of the methods used in the thesis and the reasons for their use, the processing of the results, the conclusions, a discussion, the sources, and possible appendices.

Of the above-mentioned sections, introduction, background/theory, problem setting, methods, results, conclusions and discussion may also appear in a different order, or be combined. An example of combining would be writing about the background information and the results in such a way that previous knowledge is compared to the results obtained in the thesis. In this guide you can find a rough presentation of what the different stages of the report include. For further information about solutions related to reporting and writing, refer to the literature on the conducting of research.

Introduction

The introduction describes the background and subject matter of the thesis. The aim is to offer the reader the basic elements of the content of the thesis and to evoke the reader’s interest in it. 

  • The introduction should be quite brief and concise.
  • It is advisable to write it in its final form towards the final stage of the thesis process, after the big picture of the project has become clear.
  • The introductory chapter is the first main chapter of the thesis that is numbered. The chapter is often headed ‘Introduction’, but some more illustrative heading may also be used.
  • The aim and objectives of the thesis are briefly presented in the introduction, even though they will come out in more detail as the text proceeds.

Background and theory

The section treating the  background and theory  of the thesis presents and analyses previous research and development knowledge and existing research knowledge related to the topic. In it, reasons are given for the topic of the thesis by dealing with the key literature on the professional field, previous studies, analyses, and reports.

The treatment of the background of the thesis shows how familiar the author is with the subject area of the thesis and how well they master its concepts.  The focus is on the author’s ability to demonstrate why just their thesis is useful, topical, and justified. The presentation of previous knowledge and research must not be a mere collection of summaries, but it should be approached in an analytical, comparative, and evaluative manner. Consequently, the information in the source literature shall be considered from the perspective of the author’s own thesis and goal or problem setting.

The analysis of previous research and knowledge provides the basis for the more detailed formulation of the problems of the thesis, concept definition, setting of the goals, methodological choices, and, subsequently, a basis for comparison for the results and making conclusions. The reader shall get a clear idea of how the thesis related to previous research or development projects, projects, productions, and what new things the present thesis aims to create.

Problem setting

The problem setting of the thesis shall be formulated clearly and accurately. In problem setting, the aims of the thesis are expressed, as well as the development tasks or research problems set for reaching them. 

The section on methods presents the target and data of the thesis, as well as the data collection and analysis methods used, together with a justification of their u se. It also explains how the research or development work was carried out in practice. 

All theses have some  data collection method , and the phenomenon under study is analysed based on the data collected using that method. In exploratory theses, productions and development projects, some delimited topic, phenomenon or process is set as the target of observation, and the thesis focuses on its analysis or development. Data collection methods may be qualitative or quantitative, or a combination of both. Think carefully what data collection method is suitable for the research question or target for development of the thesis. To find a suitable method, the student needs to do some careful research and become familiar with methodological literature.

After data collection, the data collected must be analysed in some systematic way. Then, we talk about  methods of analysis . The methods of analysis of qualitative and quantitative data differ from each other, and you should carefully acquaint yourself with them before the collected data can be turned into results.

To assess the representativeness and reliability of the thesis, the methods and the progress of the process must be reported in such a detail that the data collection and analysis could basically be repeated in the same way.

The results of the thesis are presented by research or development task or as otherwise clearly grouped themes. All the research or development tasks set for the thesis must be dealt with, irrespective of whether or not answers for found to them. When reporting the results, it is advisable to start from and highlight the main results. Also negative results and unrealized hypotheses must be presented.

In this section, no interpretations are made as to the reason for some result or what it can imply, unless the results and conclusions sections are combined. The key results can be illustrated to a suitable extent with tables, figures and direct quotes from the data. The content of the tables, figures and direct quotes must also be discussed in the text. It is easier for the reader if the key results are summarized in the end, which can also be done in the form of a table or figure.

It is also common to combine the results and conclusions sections.

Conclusion and discussion

In the  conclusions

  • the results are considered in relation to previous knowledge, and interpretations are made.
  • it is sometimes possible to present a suggestion, model or process motivated by the results. For example, in an evaluative study, opinions can be expressed about how the activity assessed should be developed based on the results. When considering a production, the conclusions may relate to the further processing of the production. The conclusions of a development project may relate to, for instance, the improvement or development of the functionality of the development method under study and the importance of the thesis from the point of view of professional usability.
  • show the reader what the concrete outcome of the thesis is.
  • it is important to consider the significance of the results as a whole. Sometimes it may be necessary to highlight individual results that are notable from the perspective of the entire thesis. 

In the conclusions and   discussion

  • the author shows how well they master the phenomenon under study and how well they are able to assess their work process.
  • section includes a critical and honest analysis of how well the goals set were achieved.
  • The application and practical usability of the results is assessed – for example, how possible it is to meet the suggested targets for improvement.
  • the thesis process and the factors that influenced the achievement of the results are considered critically. One should evaluate, for instance, what possible constraints there were on the methods and data used and how they possibly influenced the results.
  • It is also advisable to bring up topics for further studies or development the thesis gives rise to.

Bibliography and Appendices

Dear students,

The  exam dates of the summer semester 2024  are published. 

Please check the information for each course in which you want to take an exam in the  LSF course catalogue  under the headings "Dates/Times/Location Group" & "Comments" (course organization and realization), "Certificates" (examination form) and "Prerequisites" (exam registration and deregistration deadline).

Attention: Some exam registration / withdrawal deadlines  and  the assignment of Bachelor’s thesis supervisors end on 24.04.2024.

For modules and seminars, which are limited to a number of participants, a two-stage registration procedure with two different deadlines applies.  You have to take part in both stages; otherwise, an exam registration is not possible . After evaluation of stage 1, please check your results for each applied module bundle under "My Functions > My Lectures"( Instruction Module Application, Page 3 ).

An acceptance in the application procedure entitles students to register for the allocated module, but it does not replace an exam registration.  Without an exam registration in stage 2, the allocated module claim of the module application in stage 1 expires!  Therefore, please remember to register for exams at stage 2 with Exam Registration Deadline: 11 - 24 April 2024 via QIS: My Functions > Administration of exams ( Instruction Exam Registration/Withdrawal ).

If there is an assignment of available capacities provided for a module or seminar, the assignment of available capacities will take place on 25 April 2024 from 11:00 a.m. to 01:00 p.m. by e-mail ( pruefungsamt[at]wiwi.uni-frankfurt[dot]de ).  Detailed information on the procedure of the assignment of available capacities are available at the  website Assignment of Available Capacities .

Who typically writes a thesis.

A thesis is typically written by students finishing up a bachelor’s or Master’s degree. Some educational institutions, particularly in the liberal arts, have mandatory theses, but they are often not mandatory to graduate from bachelor’s degrees. It is more common for a thesis to be a graduation requirement from a Master’s degree.

Even if not mandatory, you may want to consider writing a thesis if you:

  • Plan to attend graduate school soon
  • Have a particular topic you’d like to study more in-depth

Dissertation word counts vary widely across different fields, institutions, and levels of education:

  • An undergraduate dissertation is typically 8,000–15,000 words
  • A master’s dissertation is typically 12,000–50,000 words
  • A PhD thesis is typically book-length: 70,000–100,000 words

However, none of these are strict guidelines – your word count may be lower or higher than the numbers stated here. Always check the guidelines provided by your university to determine how long your own dissertation should be.

A dissertation prospectus or proposal describes what or who you plan to research for your dissertation. It delves into why, when, where, and how you will do your research, as well as helps you choose a type of research to pursue. You should also determine whether you plan to pursue qualitative or quantitative methods and what your research design will look like.

It should outline all of the decisions you have taken about your project, from your dissertation topic to your hypotheses and research objectives , ready to be approved by your supervisor or committee.

Note that some departments require a defense component, where you present your prospectus to your committee orally.

The conclusion of your thesis or dissertation should include the following:

  • A restatement of your research question
  • A summary of your key arguments and/or results
  • A short discussion of the implications of your research

The conclusion of your thesis or dissertation shouldn’t take up more than 5–7% of your overall word count.

For a stronger dissertation conclusion , avoid including:

  • Important evidence or analysis that wasn’t mentioned in the discussion section and results section
  • Generic concluding phrases (e.g. “In conclusion …”)
  • Weak statements that undermine your argument (e.g., “There are good points on both sides of this issue.”)

Your conclusion should leave the reader with a strong, decisive impression of your work.

While it may be tempting to present new arguments or evidence in your thesis or disseration conclusion , especially if you have a particularly striking argument you’d like to finish your analysis with, you shouldn’t. Theses and dissertations follow a more formal structure than this.

All your findings and arguments should be presented in the body of the text (more specifically in the discussion section and results section .) The conclusion is meant to summarize and reflect on the evidence and arguments you have already presented, not introduce new ones.

A theoretical framework can sometimes be integrated into a  literature review chapter , but it can also be included as its own chapter or section in your dissertation . As a rule of thumb, if your research involves dealing with a lot of complex theories, it’s a good idea to include a separate theoretical framework chapter.

A literature review and a theoretical framework are not the same thing and cannot be used interchangeably. While a theoretical framework describes the theoretical underpinnings of your work, a literature review critically evaluates existing research relating to your topic. You’ll likely need both in your dissertation .

While a theoretical framework describes the theoretical underpinnings of your work based on existing research, a conceptual framework allows you to draw your own conclusions, mapping out the variables you may use in your study and the interplay between them.

A thesis or dissertation outline is one of the most critical first steps in your writing process. It helps you to lay out and organize your ideas and can provide you with a roadmap for deciding what kind of research you’d like to undertake.

Generally, an outline contains information on the different sections included in your thesis or dissertation , such as:

  • Your anticipated title
  • Your abstract
  • Your chapters (sometimes subdivided into further topics like literature review , research methods , avenues for future research, etc.)

When you mention different chapters within your text, it’s considered best to use Roman numerals for most citation styles. However, the most important thing here is to remain consistent whenever using numbers in your dissertation .

In most styles, the title page is used purely to provide information and doesn’t include any images. Ask your supervisor if you are allowed to include an image on the title page before doing so. If you do decide to include one, make sure to check whether you need permission from the creator of the image.

Include a note directly beneath the image acknowledging where it comes from, beginning with the word “ Note .” (italicized and followed by a period). Include a citation and copyright attribution . Don’t title, number, or label the image as a figure , since it doesn’t appear in your main text.

Definitional terms often fall into the category of common knowledge , meaning that they don’t necessarily have to be cited. This guidance can apply to your thesis or dissertation glossary as well.

However, if you’d prefer to cite your sources , you can follow guidance for citing dictionary entries in MLA or APA style for your glossary.

A glossary is a collection of words pertaining to a specific topic. In your thesis or dissertation, it’s a list of all terms you used that may not immediately be obvious to your reader. In contrast, an index is a list of the contents of your work organized by page number.

The title page of your thesis or dissertation goes first, before all other content or lists that you may choose to include.

A list of abbreviations is a list of all the abbreviations that you used in your thesis or dissertation. It should appear at the beginning of your document, with items in alphabetical order, just after your table of contents .

Your list of tables and figures should go directly after your table of contents in your thesis or dissertation.

Lists of figures and tables are often not required, and aren’t particularly common. They specifically aren’t required for APA-Style, though you should be careful to follow their other guidelines for figures and tables .

If you have many figures and tables in your thesis or dissertation, include one may help you stay organized. Your educational institution may require them, so be sure to check their guidelines.

A list of figures and tables compiles all of the figures and tables that you used in your thesis or dissertation and displays them with the page number where they can be found.

The table of contents in a thesis or dissertation always goes between your abstract and your introduction .

You may acknowledge God in your dissertation acknowledgements , but be sure to follow academic convention by also thanking the members of academia, as well as family, colleagues, and friends who helped you.

A literature review is a survey of credible sources on a topic, often used in dissertations , theses, and research papers .   • The  limitation s : what can’t the results tell us?

The results chapter or section simply and objectively reports what you found, without speculating on why you found these results. The discussion interprets the meaning of the results, puts them in context, and explains why they matter.

In qualitative research , results and discussion are sometimes combined. But in quantitative research , it’s considered important to separate the objective results from your interpretation of them.

Results are usually written in the past tense , because they are describing the outcome of completed actions.

The results chapter of a thesis or dissertation presents your research results concisely and objectively.

In quantitative research , for each question or hypothesis , state:

  • The type of analysis used
  • Relevant results in the form of descriptive and inferential statistics
  • Whether or not the alternative hypothesis was supported

In qualitative research , for each question or theme, describe:

  • Recurring patterns
  • Significant or representative individual responses
  • Relevant quotations from the data

Don’t interpret or speculate in the results chapter.

To automatically insert a table of contents in Microsoft Word, follow these steps:

  • Apply heading styles throughout the document.
  • In the references section in the ribbon, locate the Table of Contents group.
  • Click the arrow next to the Table of Contents icon and select Custom Table of Contents.
  • Select which levels of headings you would like to include in the table of contents.

Make sure to update your table of contents if you move text or change headings. To update, simply right click and select Update Field.

All level 1 and 2 headings should be included in your table of contents . That means the titles of your chapters and the main sections within them.

The contents should also include all appendices and the lists of tables and figures, if applicable, as well as your reference list .

Do not include the acknowledgements or abstract in the table of contents.

The abstract appears on its own page in the thesis or dissertation , after the title page and acknowledgements but before the table of contents .

An abstract for a thesis or dissertation is usually around 200–300 words. There’s often a strict word limit, so make sure to check your university’s requirements.

In a thesis or dissertation, the acknowledgements should usually be no longer than one page. There is no minimum length.

The acknowledgements are generally included at the very beginning of your thesis , directly after the title page and before the abstract .

Yes, it’s important to thank your supervisor(s) in the acknowledgements section of your thesis or dissertation .

Even if you feel your supervisor did not contribute greatly to the final product, you must acknowledge them, if only for a very brief thank you. If you do not include your supervisor, it may be seen as a snub.

In the acknowledgements of your thesis or dissertation, you should first thank those who helped you academically or professionally, such as your supervisor, funders, and other academics.
