Other forms of cyberbullying include sending viruses to computers of the victims, use of pseudonyms or nicknames to harass other people and flaming. Cyberbullying also entails mobilizing people against an individual; for example, racists may mobile people against certain communities. Unauthorized disclosure of personal information such as real names, marital status, place of residence, and employment status of a person without his permission also amounts to cyberbullying. Cyberbullying also involves posting indecent images of an individual into the internet with the intention of damaging the reputation or character of the individual.

Cases and Incidences of Cyberbullying

Cyberbullying is more prevalent among school-going children and teens, for example, Smith and Mississippi State University (2010, p. 106) estimate that more than seven thousand five hundred students are bullied in Australia every year. In the United States of America, cyberbullying is prevalent among children aged between seven and twelve years (9%) and among teens aged between fourteen and eighteen years (12%) (Hinduja & Patchin 2009, p. 227). The U.S. National Center for Education Statistics and Bureau of Justice Statistics also revealed that seven percent of students in grades six to twelve were cyberbullied between 2008 and 2009 (Rogers 2010, p. 151).

Recent cases and incidences of cyberbullying in the United States of America include the suicidal death of Ryan Halligan and Megan Meier as a result of cyberbullying (Nelson 2013, page 240). The Cyberbullying Research Center also reported that nearly fifty teenagers committed suicide in 2009 as a result of harassment and maltreatment over the internet (Rogers 2010, page 157). In late 2011, the National Crime Prevention Council reported that cyberbullying is a serious social problem that affects more than half of all teenagers in the U.S. (Gerdes 2012, p. 29).

Penalties and Laws against Cyberbullying

Cyberbullying is relatively new and is currently covered with existing laws against personal threats and harassment (Raatma 2013, p. 41). There are no specific penalties that have been established for cyberbullying. It is treated like other forms of crimes, and punishments may vary from fines to imprisonment.

Despite being a new form of crime, various laws and legislations have been formed to fight, reduce, and control cyberbullying. Many countries across the globe have enacted laws that clearly define the various forms of cyberbullying. For example, Assembly Bill 86 2008 was established by legislators in California state to help fight to cyberbully by authorizing administrators of schools to punish and discipline students who bully their colleagues both online and offline.

According to Allman (2009, p. 209), a majority of states in the U.S. have also established special cyber-crime units within their law enforcement agencies to handle cases of cyberbullying with great seriousness. Nelson (2013, p. 248) also affirms that reported cases of cyberbullying are treated with greater concern than physical bullying due to the increase in the number of victims of cyberbullying. According to Kowalski, Limber, and Agatston (2012, p. 249), currently, there are nearly forty-five laws prohibiting cyberbullying in the United States of America.

For instance, Title 18 of the United States Code also criminalizes sending threats to individuals through the internet. In the United States of America, federal laws prohibiting cyberbullying allows for prosecution of people who use electronic communication devices to bully others. Specific laws have also been established to protect children and persons aged below eighteen years from cyberbullying. Moreover, adults are also protected from serious forms of cyberbullying such as cyberstalking and exclusion that are based on differences in political ideologies. Laws that prohibit sending insulting text messages and emails to individuals, as well as posting of defamatory information on online public forums, social media, and networking sites that may harm individuals, have also been established.

What Is Being Done To Stop Cyberbullying

A number of initiatives have been established to help fight cyberbullying. In the U.S., a majority of states have established cyber-crime units to help fight to cyberbully. Numerous legislations and laws defining what amounts to cyberbullying, prohibiting cyberbullying, and aiming at effective prevention, control, and management of cyberbullying have also been enacted. For example, Smith and Mississippi State University (2010, p. 114) estimate that more than fifteen legislations were formulated between 2006 and 2009 by the U.S. Senate to fight against cybercrimes.

The anti-cyberbullying campaigns have also been instituted to fight against cyberbullying and to create social awareness about this vice. Moreover, both the federal and state governments have also mobilized and made available resources, such as funds, that would facilitate the fight against cyberbullying. A number of resources, such as reading materials, have also been made available to the public to enable people to deal with incidences of cyberbullying legally and effectively.

Innovations have also been used to fight cyberbullying. For example, a group of teenagers called Connecticut in New Haven developed a web application that is known as “Back off Bully”, which is used for fighting to cyberbully. Victims or witnesses of cyberbullying can use the web application in their computers and smartphones to report incidents of cyberbullying by giving details of the time, location, and how the bullying incurred. Similarly, the Global Cyber Law Database (GCLD), an online database, has also been created to make available laws that prohibit cyberbullying to assist victims of cyberbullying in the United States of America. Information on the GCLD can also be accessed and used by other countries outside the U.S. Victims of cyberbullying are also encouraged to report incidences of cyberbullying to the relevant authorities such as the police immediately after the situation occur.

Cyber Bullying Statistics

  • 37% of teenagers have experienced cyberbullying, and 30% of them have experienced it multiple times (Pew Research Center, 2018).
  • Girls are more likely to experience cyberbullying than boys (41% vs. 28%) (Pew Research Center, 2018).

  • Cyberbullying victims are twice as likely to attempt suicide compared to those who have not experienced cyberbullying (Hinduja & Patchin, 2018).
  • Over 80% of teens use a cell phone regularly, making it the most common medium for cyberbullying (National Crime Prevention Council, 2018).
  • 22% of teenagers have shared personal information online, including contact information and photos, with someone they have never met in person (Pew Research Center, 2018).

In the concluding Chap. 9 , we discuss why ameliorating violence and victimization should be a priority. Of course, addressing bullying victimization that occurs within schools for all youth is paramount toward sustaining a system that is supposed to facilitate educational progress and sustainability. There is a persistent history of disparities linked to socioeconomic and social status, family cohesion and interactions, sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression, race, ethnicity, immigration, and religion, and disabilities and special health needs in the U.S. school system. The social problem of bullying within U.S. schools is both complex and diverse. It is clear that the sources and factors associated with the vulnerability and marginalization of youth to being victimized at school presented in this book also intersect. Although homes, schools, and neighborhoods may never be completely bully-free environments, there are several ways to assist students in breaking the bullying and peer victimization cycles. The information presented in this book is also one calling for advocacy, which will suggest that if policymakers, school administrators, and community stakeholders are seeking to address and ameliorate bullying within schools, it is vital to consider the significance of various forms of social inequality.

In recent years bullying has received greater attention in America’s schools, though the issue of bullying is hardly a new one. While many people might consider bullying to be a matter involving physical intimidation and even physical violence, the range of behaviors that comprise bullying are much broader, and include psychological as well as physical intimidation and actions. According to Long and Alexander (2010), bullying “has been defined as hostile actions, recurring over time that is deliberately destructive and occurs without provocation.” Long and Alexander go on to describe bullying as “a subtype of violent behavior,” driving home the point that the emotional impact of bullying is a form of violence even if no actual physical contact is involved. Bullying behaviors are not restricted to schools; they’re also found ion homes and other social settings, and even in the workplace among adults. From a statistical standpoint, however, bullying is especially pervasive among students of middle-school age (Long & Alexander), and as such it is of significant concern to administrators, teachers, and parents. The following paper examines some of the issues and problems associated with school bullying, as well as several possible solutions.

While bullying is associated with a number of problems for victims and those whose role it is to protect them, perhaps the most significant problem involving bullying is simply recognizing it. There are a number of reasons why bullying often goes unnoticed; among these is that many of the behaviors that constitute bullying often take place less overtly than some of the most blatant acts of physical intimidation or violence. Identifying is inherently subjective, and those who are tasked with identifying it and reporting it will not always see bullying when it occurs (Brank, Hoetger& Hazen, 2012). What might look like harmless teasing to one person might appear to be a clear case of bullying to another. Many forms of bullying fall under the heading of indirect or “relational” bullying, including gossip and rumor, social exclusion, and other social behaviors that can be difficult to identify as bullying (Long & Alexander). Another related problem is that even when some teachers or administrators are aware of bullying, they choose not to intervene. According to one study, 71% of teachers simply ignore most instances of bullying (Schroeder, 1999). Before any effective solutions can be found to bullying it is first necessary for teachers, administrators and parents to know how to identify it and to take it seriously.

Another set of problems associated with bullying are the risk factors that correlate to becoming a potential victim of bullying.Being the victim of bullying is known to be associated with a number of serious risk factors. Studies have determined that there are some cognitive and emotional factors that are commonly seen in victims, which seems to indicate a causal relationship between the two (Brank et al.) These include such conditions as Asperger’s syndrome, a condition on the autism spectrum that undermines an individual’s capacity to understand social norms and respond with socially appropriate behaviors. Children with stronger peer and friend relationships are less likely to be targeted for bullying, though there may be an inverse relationship at work, with victims of bullying retreating from social relationships, thereby affirming the conditions of victim status (Brank et al.). External factors such as socioeconomic background and race are also correlated with bullying, especially when these factors place victims in a social minority at school.

The most serious problems associated with bullying are, of course, the effects on victims. Bullying victims suffer from a range of problems, including higher rates of emotional disturbances such as depression and anxiety (Long & Alexander). Victims of bullying are at a greater risk of committing suicide, using drugs and alcohol, and becoming detached from social settings such as school and family (Brank et al). Victims may develop overt physical symptoms predicated by the stress of victimization, and often report headaches, stomachaches, and other ailments (Collier, 2013). Bullying has clear and often serious effects on victims.

Solving the problem of bullying has no one-size-fits-all solution, and typically requires a multi-pronged approach. The first step towards addressing the issue of bullying is simply raising awareness among responsible adults about the seriousness of the problem. Teachers, administrators, and parents must be given the tools and information to identify bullying behaviors and to understand their negative consequences in order to be able to intervene appropriately. This requires more than just informal conversations, and must include appropriate programs that are provided in an adequate and complete fashion. Settings fort this might include seminars and forums for school officials and teachers, as well as parent-teacher conferences and other settings where parents can be given educational materials and information about available resources.

This educational information must be backed up by practical structures and interventions in schools, with clearly-defined anti-bullying policies and clearly-defined consequences for students who victimize other students (Long & Alexander). Students must also be properly informed about the seriousness of bullying and about the consequences for bullies who engage in inappropriate behavior.  Many states have passed anti-bullying legislation which makes bullying a legal matter, and such legislation generally includes significant punitive measures for bullies, including suspension, expulsion, and even incarceration (Duncan, 2011). While such rules and laws are helpful and appropriate, the best way to protect potential victims is for those responsible for supervising students to intervene as early as possible to minimize the damage of bullying.

Parents of bullying victims can also take steps to minimize the effects of bullying. This can include providing “insulating or protective factors” (Brank et al) to help the victim avoid contact with the bully and to provide positive emotional support. For victims who do not have strong social bonds, parents can help by involving their children in activities of interest or, in some cases, switching schools or finding alternatives to typical education. Victims of bullying may be helped by counseling, and schools should help provide information about the resources available to victims and their families.

While bullying is clearly a serious problem for many victims, it is also clear that bullying behaviors often go unnoticed or ignored by those who are in a position to intervene. Teachers and school officials must learn to identify the range of bullying behaviors and to take these behaviors seriously, while school officials must provide appropriate information for teachers and establish guidelines and policies for students related to anti-bullying measures. Parents must learn to spot the signs that indicate their child is being bullied, and take advantage of the resources and information available to protect and help their children. There is no single solution to stopping bullying, but by working together, parents and schools can help to reduce the problem.

natashahead 1 / 2   Apr 20, 2011   #1 I have to write an argumentative essay about a big idea. My paper is on how parents can help to stop and prevent bullying. My big idea that I am completing is a blog that offers a lot of information along with links to resources. I have my final due in two weeks but this week we have to revise our opening and closing statements and I do not know where to strap and could really use some help. Introduction: "The saying, if sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me was ever true, it sure isn't true today" (Gaul, 2010). Bullying in and out of schools is getting out of control. Statistics have shown that one third of teens are bullied at school and 4 percent also report that they were also victims of cyber bullying (Bullying Statistics, 2009). Parents really need to take a stand against bullying to help prevent it and to stop it. We as parents need to be a part of the solution, not the problem. Conclusion: No matter what end of the bullying your child is on, you need to make sure that you are doing your part to prevent and stop this. Bullying is a serious matter, weather we like it or not. If you do not think that you can handle the situation on your own, there is no harm in asking for help. You can find help in a variety of places, even with in your own family.

And the topic itself is a great topic to discuss and really get into and it allows you to use own observations of what you have seen or realized. No matter what end of the bullying your child is on, you need to make sure that you are doing your part to prevent and stop this. Bullying is a serious matter, weather we like it or not. If you do not think that you can handle the situation on your own, there is no harm in asking for help. You can find help in a variety of places, even with in your own family. This is a great paragraph, but i feel like its too "closed". You are calling for arms in this paragraph, but its not strong enough. I feel like if you put a reason or a result of parents being involved more with thier children, it would be more compelling. For example, saying parents should get more involved in their childrens lives so they can influence the character of their children.

I have came up with this as my conclusion...still not to sure if it is still good enough to close with though: All in all, Bullying is a serious matter, whether we like it or not. Parents need to come to the realization that bullying is probably in there child's life, whether it be as a victim, a bully or a bystander. If the statistics were not enough for you, just ask your child about bullying and what they know. Your child's answers will more then likely terrify you.
