E very one of us has different memories of Christmas.  What are your favorite Christmas memories?  Please comment and let us know so that we can share them with our readers.

One of My Favorite Christmas Memories

One of my favorite Christmas memories was not actually on Christmas but many days before Christmas.  In fact, one of my favorite memories of Christmas took place on the day after Thanksgiving.  When my wife and I started our own family, we started our own family tradition of setting up the Christmas tree and trimming it with lights, tinsels, and ornaments on the day after Thanksgiving.  This became our own family tradition and our outdoor Christmas decorations we set up on that very same day.  This comes on the biggest shopping day of the year, called Black Friday but we intentionally stay home on that day because to me, it’s not just Black Friday but “Black and Blue” Friday.   That’s what I call it because the very day after we have a national holiday in which we are to give thanks, people shop like maniacs and people get hurt, trampled underfoot, fights break out and yes, people even get killed on this day.  Many shoppers literally do shop till they drop so we don’t shop…we prop.  That is, we stay home where it is safe and set up our Christmas decorations.

Our Favorite Christmas Memories

My wife’s favorite Christmas memory is different from mine and your favorite Christmas memory may be different from ours.  Everyone will likely have different favorite memories of Christmas.  One example is that my wife’s favorite memory of Christmas was the first time we hung a picture of our youngest child on the tree.  My mother-in-law made a Christmas ornament that had a picture of our youngest child on it and when they were young, each year we added a new ornament with a picture of our children on it.  When they became old enough to make their own ornaments, then they started adding their own unique Christmas ornament that they have made with their own hands.  These are precious keepsakes to us. These ornaments become more and more special as time goes by and as the children grow older.  Today we have only one child left and she is going to be at home for only another year and a half before she likely goes off to college.  Then all our children will have grown into adults and left to start their own families and their own Christmas tradition.

My Own Favorite Christmas Memory

One of my every own personal Christmas memories occurred on Christmas Eve.  We get out the Christmas story and read it with Christmas music playing in the background.  This is family time and this is what makes Christmas so very special.  We get to be together and review what Christmas is all about…an observance of Christ and just why He was born as a babe in a manger.  The manger was actually a feeding trough and today we feed on God’s Word.  He came in humility and in such a humble setting and rode into Jerusalem on a donkey but when He returns, He will come in power, splendor and great glory and will come riding on a white horse to judge the world.  We needed to ensure that our children knew what Christmas was all about and it wasn’t about gifts under the tree.  It is all about Christ.  Today, we want our grandchildren to not get caught up in the commercialism of Christmas but see Who this day is all about. The gifts represent the greatest gift we can ever receive…eternal life. The presents represent gifts generally given to a king out of reverence, respect and for royalty.  We focus on being in His presence not the presents we get for ourselves.  I pray that everyone would come to realize that Christ is the real reason for the season.  It’s not about getting but about giving and what He gave was the most that anyone could ever give; He gave His own life.

Today, if you are not a believer in Christ Jesus, then your Christmas memories will not mean the same thing.  They will likely mean something that you received for Christmas, some family memory that is associated with Christmas or some special occurrence or event that took place during the holiday.  It might even be more about getting some days off from work but Christmas means so much more than that. It means that Jesus Christ came to be born as a man, to live a sinless life, to make Himself the supreme, once-and-for-all sacrifice that can redeem us to a right relationship with God so that we might enjoy God and live with Him forever in the Kingdom of Heaven.  Today, wise men and wise women are still coming to the King.  Are you wise?  You are if you have bowed the knee to Jesus Christ our Lord, repented of your sins, confessed them to God, and put your trust in Christ.  If you have, then you know what Christmas is all about.  Now, tell us about your favorite Christmas memory so that we can share it with our readers.

The holiday season is upon us. For many of us, it’s the time of love and joy and also the time of our most cherished moments.

So, what can be a better way to share and relate your best memories with others than writing about them? Writing can be a powerful way to cherish your Christmas memories and recount what Christmas means to you. 

So grab your pen and embrace the festive spirit by capturing your best Christmas memories in a personal narrative.

Step #1: Revisit Your Memory 

Start your journey by revisiting the scene that has become your favorite Christmas memory. Close your eyes and let the recollections flood in.

Transport yourself back to that moment—the sights, the sounds, and the emotions that made it unforgettable. Feel the warmth of nostalgia as you recall the details that are etched onto your memory.

Recollecting your moment isn’t hard. It simply requires you to sit in a quiet and comfortable place with a mind at ease and a pen in hand. Take a cup of hot cocoa with you if it helps ignite your inner nostalgia.

Step #2: Note Down the Highlights

While recollecting your memories, think about what made those moments special. You can ask yourself these questions and write short answers as you go:

• What specific details stand out in this memory?
• Who was present, and what role did each person play in making the moment memorable?
• Were there any surprises or unexpected elements that added to the magic?
• How did this memory make you feel in the moment?
• What traditions or rituals were part of this memory?
• Did this memory spark any lasting lessons or habits for you?

Note down your points roughly. As you write down the things that make your memory special, an outline will emerge organically. Let the narrative flow like a stream of consciousness. 

Step #3: Set the Scene

Begin your writing by setting the scene. Transport your readers to the heart of your holiday haven through descriptive language. 

For instance, you can start by describing the surroundings of your memory. Describe the twinkling lights, the scent of freshly baked cookies, and the warmth of the fireplace. The laughter of your family, the colorfully-wrapped gifts lying about. 

Remember, you have to start your narrative essay by laying out the context and environment for the reader. Once you’ve set the scene effectively, you can move ahead with the story in an engaging way.

Step #4: Craft the Narrative

Now that you have set the scene, shift your focus to writing about the sequence of events, allowing the reader to visualize the unfolding scenes. 

Capture the essence of the characters—their quirks, expressions, and the roles they played in shaping the narrative. As you craft your narrative, consider the pacing. Build anticipation as the story progresses, leading to the climax—the moment that is the essence of your memory.

Also, you should share your cherished emotions and feelings with your readers. Feelings play a key role in any narrative, make sure they are given a central stage in your story.

Step #5: Share Important Lessons and Observations

In the final parts of your essay, share the most important observations or lessons that you’ve learned.

Beyond the glittering lights and festive cheer, each memory holds valuable insights and teachings. Sharing these lessons not only adds depth to your narrative but also imparts timeless wisdom in your words.

For instance, these lessons may be about the importance of loving your family, expressing your emotions, or supporting the poor and the needy. End by expressing whatever wisdom your best Christmas memory holds for others to learn from.

                                             My favorite Christmas Memory

           Honestly these past few Christmas days I’ve felt blessed to have the memories I have been given each Christmas. My favorite Christmas memory occurred when I was ten years old. Even though now-a-days most children don’t believe in Santa anymore at the age of six let alone the age of ten, however I did and so did most of my friends.  Every Christmas morning I wasn’t only happy to see gifts under my tree but also “Santa” brought me the best gift I had ever received this Christmas. Which I enjoyed more than the presents under the tree.

          Every Christmas morning, instead of my parents waking me up I would usually wake them up feeling all enthusiastic and ready to open the presents and eat all the treats on the table that have been left behind by “Santa”. Once my parents finally woke up, we would eat breakfast and then my parents would point which gifts were mine under the tree after consuming the gingerbread house we had made after breakfast. My eyes lit up and I was more than just excited at this point, my heart was pounding. My parents made me close my eyes as they gave out the gifts, because my parents always had this thing were they said if Santa saw us with our eyes open as he was giving out the gifts a terrible curse would come upon us and I definitely believed them at the time too. I was such a gullible child. Anyways, I got everything I wanted that I made a list for and this made me believe that Santa was real as a child. Obviously any person could just come into my house and give me any presents but Santa knew exactly what I wanted, everything on the list. After I opened my gifts, what was next to come was a marvel. There was something I wanted more than anything else and this would lead me to truly believing in Santa even more. My mom told me there was one more present from Santa. My parents led me to the front steps of my house and I was stunned. A little background on why I was stunned before I reveal the reason is I have a family in Puerto Rico who has been struggling to get by and has always had a huge place in my heart since the very start, especially my cousin Isabelle.  My grandparents gave me a tiny slip with wrapping paper on it. I opened it as quickly as I could and I couldn’t hold back the tears from coming out. It was a ticket to Puerto Rico. I started crying my eyes out.  Now there’s so much meaning behind this than just it being a ticket to Puerto Rico, it inhabited the family I loved and missed very dearly and for this I was very grateful to Santa. This was truly the best Christmas ever. Words cannot describe the amount of happiness I felt on this very day.

When December rolls around, I’m always thankful for the seasonal traditions our family has built and the memories they evoke. While I don’t have an official Christmas memories journal , I try to take time to remember and write about the moments and memories of Christmas—both present and past—that speak to my heart.

Merry Mealtime Memories

I think most of us will agree that many of our holiday traditions involve food ! For nearly 35 years, my neighbors have taken turns hosting our annual cookie exchange, so December always finds me stocking up on baking staples, scouring cookbooks (and Pinterest!) in search of new recipes, and baking dozens of cookies.

Our big family dinner is on the 24th. We used to have a glorious turkey and all the trimmings, but over the past few years, we’ve started a new tradition of roasting a prime rib. And no matter what else is on the menu for Christmas breakfast, we’ll always bake fragrant cinnamon rolls and pull golden, icy-sweet summer peaches from the freezer—the ones labeled “For Christmas.”

Decking the Halls

Decorating the tree is an event unto itself. It means recounting 40-plus years of memories as we nestle ornaments, both old and new, among the branches. No one—and I mean NO one—can place a single ornament anywhere till my husband sticks his ancient yarn Santa on the tree, front and center.

Among our treasures are Snoopy and Woodstock ornaments from our first year of marriage in 1975, Battenburg lace angels and bread dough animals handmade by dear friends, a red double-decker bus purchased on our first visit to the UK, and ornaments with photos of our kids and grandkids over the years.

After my stepmom passed away, I found boxes of my dad’s glass ornaments— ones I remember from my own childhood —in her apartment. Talk about a rush of memories! Faded and fragile, these treasured globes have found a new home in glass vases on our sideboard.

Celebrating the Christ Child

On Christmas Eve, we bundle up and head to our pastor’s house. Sleepy children in fuzzy jammies, sweet babies resting in their mamas’ arms, and families dressed in Christmas finery on their way home from a celebration—we all gather to hear the reading of Luke 2, worship together, and welcome the Christ Child at midnight.

Each family has special traditions, from Advent readings to caroling at convalescent homes, from setting up manger scenes to making gingerbread houses. Have you ever written down the different things that make Christmas unique and memorable for your family?

If not, don’t let another year go by without capturing those memories. It’s not too late to start a special Christmas Memories Journal that you can add to every year.

With your children, take time in the next few days, before the last-minute crush, to write about the sights, sounds, aromas, and activities that make the memories swirl every December. One person can do the writing, or you can share the pen and let everyone write something. Optionally, tuck in photos, Christmas cards, ticket stubs from a play or choir performance, or other memorabilia to enhance your journal.

• How does your family welcome the holidays? Do you do something special to launch into December?
• What are your family’s Advent traditions ?
• Do you have Nativity set traditions? Where and how do you display the pieces? Describe what your set is made of and how it looks.

• How many Christmas trees do you decorate each year? Is each one different from the rest? Describe them.
• Record your Christmas dinner menu.
• Make a list of friends and family who stopped in to visit over the holidays.
• Have you ever had a Christmas mishap ? Write about what happened! (For example, we can look back and laugh about the year our kids got coal in their stockings as a joke, even though it pretty much backfired at the time!)
• Do you get a fresh tree each year? Do you chop it down yourselves or buy it from a tree lot or farm? Write about your experience.

• Does your family put presents under the tree all month long, or do they all appear on Christmas Eve?
• Do you have a special Christmas stocking tradition? Are stocking gifts wrapped or unwrapped?
• Who is the first person to wake up on Christmas morning?  What time does everyone wake Mom and Dad?
• What are you most thankful for this Christmas?
• Do you have special gifts from Santa?
• Do you leave out milk and cookies?
• If you don’t have a fireplace , where do you lay out the stockings?
• What are your gift-giving traditions?
• What is each family member’s favorite Christmas ornament ?
• When do you start listening to Christmas music? What is each person’s favorite carol?
• Which family traditions will you keep when you are older?
• Make a list your favorite holiday cookies or treats.
• Write down memories about cooking and baking. Do you bake with others, or do you like to bake alone?
• What are your favorite spiritual Christmas traditions ?
• What homemade gifts have you made for others? Received as gifts? How does it feel to give or receive this kind of gift?
• Do you give your pets Christmas presents?
• How do you encourage or bless those who are less fortunate than you are?
• Do you have a favorite Christmas movie? Do you have movie-watching traditions?
• How does your family decorate the outside of your house?
• What are your favorite Christmas smells?
• What was your most memorable childhood Christmas ? Why?
• Do you go to church on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, or both? Write about your favorite parts of the service.
• Is Santa Claus part of your family’s Christmas festivities? Tell about some of your family’s Santa traditions.
• Have you ever peeked at presents before Christmas? How did you feel?
• Do you host family Christmas celebrations at your house, or do you go somewhere else, such as your grandparents’ house?
• How do you spend Christmas day?
• What are your Christmas Eve traditions? Are there things you do every year, no matter what?
• Do you have a special Christmas breakfast? Is it the same every year? When do you eat breakfast?
• Does everyone take turns opening Christmas gifts, or is it a free-for-all around the tree?
• Some people get a special kind of ornament every year, such as snowmen, angels, rocking horses, or gingerbread men. Do you have an  ornament collectio n or tradition?
• Does your family wear Christmas pajamas?
• Do you dress up or go casual for Christmas dinner?
• Some families open gifts on Christmas Eve and others wait until Christmas morning. What is your family’s tradition?
• Have you traveled a long way to celebrate Christmas in a faraway place?
• Have you ever been stuck on the freeway or in an airport on Christmas Eve? What was it like?
• Do you have a musical family ? Write about the special role instruments and singing play at holiday gatherings.
• What are some ways your family remembers Jesus at Christmas?
• Write about one of your family’s most meaningful Christmas traditions. Why is it so important to you?
• Is there a traditional place you visit or an event you attend every Christmas, such as a tree-lighting ceremony, Christmas pageant, or holiday lights display? Write about it.
• Does your family celebrate holiday traditions from other countries ? What special foods, decorations, or activities mark the event?

For some of us, it’s been an insanely hard year, and Christmas may be bittersweet. As we celebrate the birth of the King, may your family times be meaningful and warm— no matter the circumstances . And may this coming year be filled with hope and promise for each of you.

             Some families have their own unique way of celebrating those special moments with the ones they love. My most cherished memory as a child was Christmas day with my own family. I couldn't wait for my favorite holiday to arrive when we would gather around the Christmas tree and enjoy each other's company.              Approaching Aunt Jane's house, our family anticipates the grand holiday about to be rekindled once again. With our family and friends about to be reunited each family member is trying not to notice how long the last mile is taking. The houses along the road seem to crawl by slower as dad pushes harder on the accelerator.              Finally, we arrive at Aunt Jane's house, our long journey is over. We take a huge breath as we step out onto the crispy snow that crunches beneath our boots. The air is fresh and sends a shiver down my spine. I make my way to the frost-coated door that's illuminated by red and green Christmas lights.              As I open the door and step into the house, the smell of different Christmas odors surrounds me and makes my mouth water. I hear voices laughing , talking, and inquiring who's at the door. Suddenly my aunt is upon us giving us hugs and inviting us into the house. As my family and I are quickly shuffled in by my aunt I look around.              I see a plate full of Christmas cookies, Christmas decorations and Christmas music lightly penetrate the air as the family socializes with each other. The constant murmur of voices serves as background for the music. My cousins are running laps around the den while playing tag and laughing throughout the house.              Then I hear a voice say to me " Come give Granny a big hug." As I come toward her I see an antique smile painted gracefully across her face. I reach out and hug her fragile body. We sit and talk about my wanting to come to her house for a much needed visit.              The evening continues like this until my aunt announces that supper is ready. Everyone is seated...

Originally published in Mademoiselle magazine in December 1956, “A Christmas Memory” remains one of Truman Capote’s (1924-1984) most anthologized short stories. A midcentury author with a clear and evocative prose style , Capote is remembered for his novella Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1958) and for his groundbreaking work of true-crime nonfiction, In Cold Blood (1966). “A Christmas Memory” returns to the rural Alabama setting of the author’s childhood to recount a magical Christmas season shared between the seven-year-old “Buddy” and his cousin, who is in her sixties (and to whom Buddy , the narrator, refers only as “my friend”). In recounting this odd couple’s dedicated holiday preparations—which include baking 31 fruitcakes to give away to their eccentric collection of friends, felling and decorating an enormous Christmas tree, and exchanging handmade kites—the story reveals the sustaining love shared between two social outsiders. “A Christmas Memory” has attained the status of a holiday classic, with television adaptations appearing in 1967 and 1999.

The story opens with a first-person narrator instructing the reader to “[i]magine a morning in late November […] more than twenty years ago” (3), setting the story in the early 1930s. Though largely narrated in the present tense, the story is a series of the narrator’s memories, beginning with the seven-year-old narrator sitting in the kitchen of a large old house in a rural town. At the window stands his “best friend,” a woman who is in her sixties but “still a child” (4). This friend, a distant cousin of the narrator’s, calls him “Buddy” after a “boy who was formerly her best friend” who died in the 1880s. Other people—relatives—live with them in this house, but “though [these relatives] have power over us, and frequently make us cry, we are not, on the whole, too much aware of them. We are each other’s best friend” (4).

Buddy’s friend suddenly exclaims, “[I]t’s fruitcake weather!” (4). This announcement marks the beginning of the Christmas season, as every year the two start their Christmas preparations by baking fruitcakes for their friends. The two head outside to collect the pecans needed for the recipe, accompanied by their beloved dog Queenie . They also bring a run-down baby carriage that belonged to Buddy shortly after he was born. Though it is nearly falling apart, the buggy has been a stalwart companion, a serviceable container for the many things they like to collect from the woods and fields—flowers, ferns, firewood, and more. Today, it will carry their harvest of pecans.

The friends spend a day laboriously collecting pecans that have already been shaken loose from the trees of a nearby orchard. The nuts, hidden among frosty blades of grass, are very difficult to gather, and Buddy and his friend receive no assistance from their family members. Buddy and his friend then confront the problem of how to purchase the fruitcakes’ other ingredients. Neither of them has much cash, as their relatives control the household money and are always reluctant to part with even a small amount of it. In the past, the friends have undertaken various money-making schemes to build up their “Fruitcake Fund,” which include selling preserves, entering contests, and setting up a “Fun and Freak Museum” in the backyard featuring a three-legged chicken (8).

Buddy and his friend carefully count up their savings. Despite their lack of funds, Buddy’s friend gives him 10¢ every week to go to the movies, although she never attends herself, telling him, “I’d rather hear you tell the story, Buddy” (9). Their savings total $13, and they decide to throw away a penny to avoid bad luck.

The next day, Buddy and his friend tackle the challenge of acquiring whiskey for the fruitcakes, a task that must be accomplished in secret since in Prohibition-era America, the sale of alcohol is legally forbidden by the state. The two head to the town’s “fish-fry and dancing café,” a “sinful” place owned by the fearsome Mr. Haha Jones , described by the narrator as “an Indian […] A giant with razor scars across his cheeks” (12). The two approach Haha with trepidation. However, Haha treats the pair kindly, offering to give them the whiskey for free in exchange for a fruitcake.

The narrator informs the reader that while the fruitcakes are intended for “[f]riends,” most of these friends include not family members or neighbors but anyone who seems kindly or interesting, including a bus driver, a Baptist missionary, and President Roosevelt—“these strangers, and merest acquaintances, seem to us our truest friends” (15).

The story jumps ahead to December. Buddy and his friend have finished distributing their fruitcakes, and they celebrate by sharing their few ounces of leftover whiskey. Drinking the whiskey, they dance and sing in the kitchen until their festivities are discovered by “two relatives,” who scold Buddy’s friend until she weeps, shouting: “[A]re you out of your mind? feeding a child of seven! must be loony! road to ruination […] shame! scandal! humiliation! kneel, pray, beg the Lord!” (17). Buddy comforts her with plans to bring home a Christmas tree.

The next day, the two hike deep into a beautiful woodland and find an enormous tree. They spend the day felling it and dragging it home. Along the way, “the rich mill owner’s lazy wife” spots them from her car and offers to pay them for the tree, but Buddy’s friend refuses her offer (20). At home, they decorate the tree with handmade ornaments. Although satisfied with the Christmas tree, Buddy is disappointed that he cannot buy any gifts for his friend; he can only build her a kite. The night before Christmas, his friend reveals to Buddy her disappointment that she was unable to buy Buddy a bicycle and could only afford to make him a kite; the two laugh and comfort one another.

On Christmas day, Buddy is disappointed by the impersonal gifts from his other relatives (including a secondhand sweater and a subscription to a children’s religious magazine). However, his spirits are lifted when he and his friend fly their kites in a pasture together. Buddy’s friend experiences a religious epiphany and shares her realization: In the past, she imagined God as a distant, inaccessible figure, but this Christmas morning, she realized that “‘the Lord has already shown Himself. That things as they are’—her hand circles in a gesture that gathers clouds and kites and grass and Queenie pawing earth over her bone—‘just what they’ve always seen, was seeing Him’” (27).

The story jumps forward several years with the narrator’s statement, “This is our last Christmas together” (27). The narrator explains that following this Christmas, his other relatives decide to send him away to military school, and that Queenie dies only a year after this last Christmas with his friend. Buddy loathes military school, and he never feels at home, because it isn’t truly home if his friend isn’t with him. Although he and his friend write to each other, her letters reveal her worsening health: “[G]radually in her letters she tends to confuse me with her other friend, the Buddy who died in the 1880s [… and] a morning arrives in November […] when she cannot rouse herself to exclaim, ‘Oh my, it’s fruitcake weather!’” (28).

Buddy receives a letter stating that his friend has died, but he is not surprised, as the message “merely confirms a piece of news some secret vein had already received, severing from me an irreplaceable part of myself” (29). Buddy ends the narrative walking across the grounds of his military school in December, staring at the sky and hoping to see “rather like hearts, a lost pair of kites hurrying toward heaven” (29).
