Design and implementation of an automated result processing system

Profile image of Sage 01

ABSTRACT The conventional method of processing and accessing student result via a physical effort with the aid of conventional material like pen, pencil, book, ruler and so is cumbersome and very stressful. This project examined an automated student result processing system with respect to the different phases involved in the development of system today, such as system programming and design, program logic, change over style, documentation, and its significance over the manual system of result processing system. The automated student result processing system allow and ensure easy insertion and deletion of student record, and it also allow the user to add and update the record of student in any given semester after the conduction of their continuous assessment and examination in other to generate their Grade Point (GP) and Cumulative Grade Point (CGP) easily. The result processing is highly secured and protected from unauthorized users and this helps to reduce cases of missing student records. In this project work, the user must be given a password and access in which he/she will be the only one having access to every student record after the examination and test has being added together and submitted to him as result processing officer to generate the status and grade point or cumulative grade point of each student. The automated result processing systems enhance the reliability and convenience in computation of student score and generate their respective grade point in each course. The database contains the complete and comprehensive details of each student and their academic performance. This database keeps track of each student course like examination requirement and subject. The project work helps to overcome the problems associated with the manual method of result processing with the aid of the automated system.

AUTOMATED STUDENTS' RESULTS MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM (SRMIS)

Paul Umoren

This project, Automated Students' Results Management Information System (SRMIS) was carried out to automate the manual processes of compiling Students Examination Results. It was necessitated because of some setbacks in manual result processing. The system was designed to automatically take raw scores from excel files and store them in a database. It used past processed results to help the next course registration prior to results upload. Its result processing features includes the computation of grade point average (GPA), generation of result reporting sheets and transcripts. Every session, it keeps track of student's status information as recorded in the student files, specifying if a student is legitimate. The database also holds the lists of admitted students each year and records their school fees payment status. The software engineering was done with the Incremental model using an object-oriented programming approach. Raw data input to the SRMIS is one of the most cumbersome tasks. A computerized input using file upload saves lecturers a lot of effort and time of data entry. This system uses the student's course registration data to match the uploaded results. The essence is to design an efficient computerized system that will replace manual result processing which is prone to lot of paper work and errors. This reduces the tedious tasks involved, and enhances students' performance through timely publication of results.

The end-of-course marks assigned by lecturers are anticipated to express the level of accomplishment of each student in the class. These marks are used to make a mass of decisions. Unless an adequately accurate and efficient method is used for the grading, the grades are appropriate to convey misinformation . In itself, the handing out of results is found to be rather tedious, especially when carried out manually, and when the total number of students is large. It is time-consuming and errorprone. However, the process carried out with a computer running a suitable software application becomes a lot easier and much more accurate. A spontaneous and systematic one elucidation is essential for all universities and organizations. With that in mind, we overhauled the existing Student Database Management System and made necessary improvement to streamline the processes. In this paper, a computer software application was developed to facilitate the automated processing of the results. The s...

The current method of student result assessing and processing with the aid of only Microsoft Excel Template is cumbersome, stressful and erroneous. This research studied the difficulties faced with the current result processing system and proposed an improved system using XAMP full stack. In the proposed system, two related software were designed, one to be used by course lecturer to enter students' score and generates students' grade. The other software would be used by the departmental exams officer (DEO) who is the Admin of the system to generate their Grade Point (GP), Cumulative Grade Point Average(CGPA) and Graduating Grade Point Average(CGPA) easily, the exams and record office would use it to generate Transcript. The advanced result processing and management system is highly secured and protected from unauthorized users and this helps to reduce cases of missing student records. It also enhances the reliability and convenience in computation of student score and generate their respective grade point in each course. The database contains the complete and comprehensive details of students and their academic performance. The advanced automated result processing and management system was designed using XAMP full stack where HTML, CSS and JavaScript were used for frontend while PHP and MySQL Database were used to design the students record database. Due to enormous problems associated with manual computation of students' result and transcript processing in university of Port Harcourt, there is need for efficient method with error free that will enable result to be processed automatically. This system will accept multiple inputs and aid course advisers carry out their responsibilities effectively. A result is an official report and record of student courses with grades. Students result is critical to their graduation. Currently, there is no reliable way to track incoming results. This creates problems for students and staff. Lost or misplaced result has unwanted consequences and delay graduation. In this work, a computer software application was developed to facilitate the automated processing of the results. The software was developed in Java programming language in the form of a database, employing PostgreSQL Relational Database Management System. The developed software performed well and produced expected results on completion. With it, it was possible to compute Grade Point Average and Cumulative Grade Point Average for each student based on examination scores entered being the core idea behind the design.

This research project examined the inadequacies involved in the manual method of compiling students’ result in secondary schools in Nigeria. The problems with the manual result processing were identified and a new system was proposed, designed, and implemented. In this work, a computer software application was developed to facilitate the automated processing of the results. The software was developed using PHP (Hypertext processor) programming language and MYSQL (My Structural Query Language), a relational database management system in designing the database; tested and found to have produced the expected results. Teachers do not need to draw vertical/horizontal lines on a broad sheet of paper for recording students test and exam scores, and also need not to do any form of calculations, as the system does virtually everything. The software will make the teacher’s job less stressful by cutting down the time and effort spent on result preparation, thereby, allowing the teacher more time for teaching and other instructional issues. This new system is flexible and can be modified to suit any kind of students’ record keeping and data processing in both public and private secondary schools. In the course of the study, an existing system was digested and its deficiencies were detected and emphatically analyzed, after which solutions to the problems were proffered in the new designed computerized system that is reliable and more interactive. The new system terminates all the problems experienced with the existing system. The case study of this research work is Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited (M.E.S.L) Secondary School, New Bussa, Niger State.

This system is based on designing and implementation of a Student Result Verification System (SRVS). It is intended for use in academic environment where students normally come for clearance before collection of their statement of result and subsequently for certificate collection. The findings revealed that students normally come for result clearance through their various departments, and their results are usually checked from the hard copy before issuers of clearance form, the same thing applicable on issuers of IT letter. Also, some of the students are given repeat, while some are withdrawn from the institutions because of poor academic performance. Mistakes occurred at time by the adm. Officers in the process of checking these result manually, to rectify this problem led to this research. The variables under consideration here are the students and of course the result sheet. Data were collected using document examination, interviews and through separate oral interview from different departments of the school using the simple random sampling technique. For design, top down design approach under agile software development of Software Development Life Circle were used. For the programming, Visual Basic 6.0 programming language was used and Microsoft Access for the result database management system. A computer system with basic system configurations is used for testing of the software. The student results of various departments were used for test-running the system to ascertain the efficiency and effectiveness of this research work. In conclusion, this software will help admin officers, the secretaries, the SIWES office, and even the school authorities to easily search for particular student information from the database during clearance.
