Watching free movies online is a convenient and frugal way to see the films you love right from the comfort of your own home. Yes, there are plenty of sites where you can get movies "for free" but I've taken the time to confirm that the ones listed below, although ad-supported, are clean from viruses and, importantly, 100% legal to use .

Our Top Picks

Best Overall: Tubi

Tubi has thousands of free movies and shows, including big titles and a kid-friendly area.

Best for User Feedback: YouTube

Among the millions of videos on YouTube are free movies with ads, curated by YouTube staff.

Best for High-Quality Movies: Fandango at Home

Fandango at Home's high-def movies are organized into unique sections like Blast From the Past, Hidden Gems, and Big Time Movie Stars.

Best for Popular Titles: Freevee

Amazon's free movie streaming service includes tons of well-known films.

Best for a TV Experience: Pluto TV

It's like cable TV, but totally free. Watch on-demand movies and TV, plus live videos 24/7.

Best for a Variety of Movies: Popcornflix

Jump right into watching free movies on your TV, phone, or computer without even setting up an account.

Best for Finding Movies Around the Web: Yidio

Yidio doesn't host any content, but it has a robust search feature that finds where you can watch films and shows for free online.

There's a huge variety of freely available movies on these sites, from comedies and dramas to horror and action films. There are movies from big-name studios, but also many older and independent movies that you'll love to watch over and over again. Just be sure you have the best TV you can to ensure a great viewing experience.

I spend some time each month looking for the best free movie sites on the internet. This list was last updated in March to confirm that they still work, are still free, and are still worth your time.

Most of these sites have a mobile app for watching their movies. Take a look at our list of the best free apps for streaming movies so you can take the films with you wherever you go.

High quality, popular movies.

Lots of categories.

Subtitles can be enabled for most movies.

Has a section just for kids.

You don't need to log in to start watching.

Genre categories don't separate movies from shows.

You don't want to miss the thousands of free movies and TV shows you can stream right now at Tubi.

I like to visit the Leaving Soon page to catch freebies before they start to cost somewhere else, but my favorite part of this website for inspiration is Trending Now — I often have no clue what I'm in the mood for, so to see what everyone else is watching right now is awesome.

For example, a few of the more popular titles people have been streaming over the last month include Paddington 2, Hot Tub Time Machine, Penelope, Special Forces, Dheepan, Girl Next , and A Little Help.

There are dozens of other genres and collections to pick from, too, like exclusives in Only Free on Tubi , and Black Cinema, Foreign Films, Based on a Book, Highly Rated on Rotten Tomatoes, and Cult Classics. There's also a Spanish section and live TV.

Tubi Kids is a section of this site perfect for streaming just kid-related films. It's available from the top of the website and has categories just for preschoolers and other kids, including Toon TV, LEGO, Animé, and Friendly Monsters films. There are also parental controls you can set through the normal website.

You don't even need a user account to watch this stuff. Just follow this link below, click something you're interested in, and enjoy!

Movies are rated by real viewers.

You can leave comments.

Single, easy-to-scroll-through list.

Most movies have subtitles.

No ads for Premium subscribers.

Many aren't in HD.

Relatively few genres.

No easy search tool for just the free movies.

I was shocked the first time I found out YouTube has free movies . And no, these aren't poorly filmed videos without subtitles that were uploaded by someone random. I'm talking full-length, totally legal movies, uploaded and managed by YouTube.

Recently, I was able to watch A Walk to Remember and Bram Stoker's Van Helsing ; both movies included captions and were available in 1080p. Here are some other examples of free films I saw listed on YouTube this past month: The Longest Yard, Transcendence, Knowing, The Last Song, Hugo , and Donnie Darko .

Something you can't get with YouTube, but that is supported by most of these movie sites, is the ability to search through just the free titles. However, here's a trick that has saved me loads of time: Open the full list of movies and use your browser's Find function to search by year, genre, or title.

YouTube's curated list (the link below) is the best way to find all their new and popular free movies. Some companies, like Cineverse , list movies in their own profile.

Fandango at Home

Lots of high quality movies.

Several useful ways to find just the free movies.

Most are popular and well known, and include subtitles.

Films can be filtered and sorted in a number of ways.

Also supports buying and renting movies.

Some movies here cost.

You must log in (it's free).

There are thousands of movies on Fandango at Home (formerly Vudu) that you can watch right now. All you have to do is put up with a few commercials.

It's a great movie site whether you do or don't have an idea about what you want to watch. Films can be filtered by genre, and you can browse by most-watched or release date. All the basic genres are available: action, comedy, crime, romance, and a few others.

While it's true that the genres aren't interesting, Fandango at Home makes up for it with their curated lists. Check these out: Most Watched Movies , Critically Acclaimed , Hidden Gems , and Big Time Movie Stars . There are a few hundred videos in each section.

Something unique about this site is that not only does it let you look through the newest releases, but you can do so on a single page for every genre. Some examples of 2024 titles include Calber Island, Much Ado, Ember in the Woods, and Everything is Both .

One great thing about Fandango at Home's movies is that some of them are in 1080p, so you don't have to sacrifice quality just to watch some free movies.

Once you settle on something to watch, you might be given the option to buy or rent it, but so long as you found it through one of the free pages, there will be a button you can use to stream the movie without paying. You can also pay for movies here ( some are even still in theaters ).

Great collection of newer free films and shows.

Browsing for movies is easy.

Includes original videos.

Locate movies with subtitles in your language.

Uncluttered video player.

User account required.

Most in-video ads are long.

Unhelpful search tool.

For US users only.

Freevee (formerly IMDb TV) is Amazon's collection of free movies. I use this a lot from my TV, but it's just as easily accessible from their website or mobile app. Everything I watch here is easy to find and seems to be high-quality.

Something I like about this site is how the genres and movie collections are organized. For example, if I'm looking through the most popular movies or recently added list, I can filter by genre and/or subtitle language to make sure I find a movie that's a good fit for me.

The video player lets you turn on subtitles, adjust the way the captions show up on the screen, change the video quality, and go into full-screen mode.

Here are some of the most popular movies you can watch at Freevee: The Homesman, Tidal Wave: No Escape, F9: The Fast Saga, Serenity , and Overcomer .

Has the same feel as a TV's channel guide.

Includes thousands of on-demand movies.

Streams TV shows, news, music, and more.

No user account necessary.

Has only a dozen or so channels for just movies.

Live-streamed movies can't be watched again on demand.

There's always a video playing; you can mute, but not stop it.

Pluto TV is the closest thing I've found to free cable TV. It's owned by Paramount and fully supported by ads, so there's no worry that you might accidentally buy something.

My biggest joy about using this service is that I can just turn it on and let it play. There are hundreds of live channels, so some of them feature news, reality TV, or game shows, but there are also some with full-length movies.

Not everything is live, though, which is good. If I'm in the mood for something specific, I can look through thousands of movies and TV shows that are available on demand.

The unique categories for their on-demand films are a huge plus because most movie sites just stick to the traditional few genres. Examples include The Black Collective: Black Cinema, 00s Replay, Godzilla, Award Winners, Directed by Women , and Comfort Movies .

These are some of the most watched movies on Pluto TV this last month: Norbit , Mean Girls, Conic the Hedgehog, Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Harlem Nights, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Top Gun , and She's the Man.

In my experience, running Pluto TV through a TV makes it easier to use because the always-on video player gets in the way on smaller screens. But, there is a mobile app and a desktop player if you'd rather go that route.

Popcornflix

Includes subtitles.

Has a one-page list of every movie available.

'Continue watching' section.

Can't sort by date or popularity.

Strange site navigation.

Popcornflix is another great place to watch free movies online. Their constant flow of new titles from Screen Media Ventures means they have lots of movies being added all the time.

Right off the bat, I appreciate that I don't need an account to use it. I also like that resume playback is supported so I can pause and watch the rest of the movie later.

However, there are a few things I don't like. While the website is definitely very modern looking, it's not super user-friendly. Along that same line, I would love to have sorting options within each genre list because it's way more fun to see which documentaries, for examples, were added recently so I'm not scrolling over all the same movies I always see.

There are several hundred movies here that include comedy, drama, horror, action, romance, family, documentary movies, and foreign films. They also feature web and film school originals, and list some titles by a common theme. I've seen Disaster Movie Madness, Edgy Comedies, Behind Bars, Space Invaders, Pulse-Pounding Thrills , and Fear Factory .

Makes it easy to find free movies around the web.

Lots of unique filtering options.

Sort by popularity and date added.

Can be helpful for renting and buying, too.

Films are streamed through other sites.

Movies are DVD quality.

Incorrectly labels some paid movies as free.

Shows the wrong synopsis and photo for some films.

I'm so happy I stumbled on Yidio years ago! It's like a search engine for all these other movie sites. It's incredibly handy because it shows where on the internet a movie is available for free.

A search box would be enough, but Yidio goes above and beyond with lots of other sorting and filtering options. These include MPAA rating, decade, genre, IMDb score, and others. Just fill out any of that information to get a list you can comb through, with links to free movie sites.

For example, I asked Yidio to find me free animation movies released since 2020 and to sort the list by IMDb rating. The top several results provided links to watch those films on Tubi, Roku, Pluto TV, and other free streaming sites.

This isn't a perfect service, but it works great nearly every time I use it.

The Roku Channel

Provides high quality movies.

Includes newer films.

Works on computers, mobile devices, and TVs.

Offers customizable captions.

No user account needed.

Can't filter or sort any genre list.

Doesn't separate movies from shows in category lists.

Lists paid videos next to free ones.

You might already know about Roku's free movies if you have a Roku TV or streaming player. But even if you don't, you can still watch all the same free movies, TV shows, and live TV from a computer, phone, tablet.

There are some ads in these movies, but the trade-off is really high-quality videos and well-known movies.

On the home page are handy categories I have yet to find on another free movie site. They often change, but some that I've seen include Reality Romance, Undercover Agents, Film Noir, Environment, UFO Phenomenon, Teen Dramas, and Mexican Action.

While there are also typical genre lists you can browse through, none of them let you sort by popularity or filter by rating or year. This is by far my biggest issue with the service. That, and both TV shows and movies are mixed into the same lists, and said lists must be browsed horizontally in a carousel-like menu. It's just not super user-friendly.

However, I do like that you can search for actors and directors to find movies they're associated with. I also appreciate the Continue watching section.

Most if not all movies have subtitles.

Doesn't require a user account.

Several ways to browse the films.

Create a queue for easy passive watching.

Mostly uninteresting genres.

Lists shows alongside the movies.

Huge lists of videos that can't be sorted.

Plex is an interesting service because it's actually a much bigger package than it might seem at first. In addition to its massive collection of free full-length movies and TV shows, Plex also has live TV and associated software that serves as a really cool at-home media server .

Currently, there are tens of thousands of free movies and shows here. They're sectioned off in traditional genres like action and crime, but you can also browse by actor or channel. Plex has its own unique collections, too, including Women Making History, Til Death Do Us Part, Cheap Thrills, Midnight Movies, and Best of the West.

On a movie's watch page are similar titles and additional details that help build a total picture of the film, like the full cast list, reviews, and trailers. I love this because it makes it easy to find other movies on Plex with the same stars.

See which movies on Plex are leaving soon to catch them before they go! Plex's Most Popular page lists these titles and more: To Kill a Mockingbird, Joy Ride, Collide, The Whole Truth, Men, Spree, and Scary Movie 4.

If you can't find what you want on Plex, the title you're interested in might still show up in the results, and you'll be given links to places you can buy/rent it (sort of like Yidio, listed above).

You don't need a user account.

Also has TV shows.

Save movies to a 'Watch Later' list.

Includes movie trailers.

The ads help fund the project and filmmakers.

Can't sort or filter any genre list.

Really distracting ads.

No age verification for NC-17 films.

Filmzie is built for streaming movies from independent filmmakers and both small and large studios. The site and app are well-designed, and there are plenty of great titles to stream.

Here are some collections I've seen here that are rare to find on a movie site: Festive Films, Undiscovered Gems, Asia's Top Cinema, Cuddle-Up Comedies , Short Movies, and Independent Cinema .

Of course, over 20 traditional genres, like drama and thriller, are also available. Trending, new, and most-watched movies each have their own section as well.

Filmzie does a great job organizing its movies. This is the main reason I use it. That, and there are so many videos here that I have never even heard of, so it's the perfect place to find something brand new.

Some of this site's most watched movies are Machete Language, The Trolls, Afterlife, Words, and Play Hooky.

I've used the website and the mobile app, and both work more or less the same as these other movie sites.

Supports 'resume watching.'

Clearly shows which titles are leaving soon.

Genre lists can't be sorted.

Few unique genres.

Redbox is known for its DVD rental kiosks, but they also have free movie streams available through their website and mobile app. No matter where you use it, the user interface is quite bland, and you can't sort any of the lists. Still, I'll end up here from time to time if I can't find something good through these other services.

Like most movie sites, Redbox's collection can be browsed by genre to help you find dramas, kid movies, romance films, comedies, etc. Faith-Based is one category I haven't seen elsewhere.

Redbox also makes it super simple to see which movies are the most popular and which ones will be leaving the site soon. Some of the latest movies added to their streaming collection include Autumn Road, Repeat, Night Night, Megan , and Infinitum: Subject Unknown .

Big selection, including recent films.

Good video quality.

Really great mobile app.

Can't sort films by popularity.

Available only in the US and its territories.

Crackle is a no-brainer for this list. I always come back to it to watch free movies online because of its list of hundreds of full-length films and original programming. These are big-name movies with stars I'm sure you know.

Although you have to sit through commercials, I find them to be relatively short, with only a few breaks during a movie.

Another reason I choose Crackle is because of its unique categories like Foreign Language, Stand-Up, British, Variety/Talk/Games, and Unidentified/Unexplained . It's fun to look through interesting genres like this.

A closed captioning toggle is available directly from the video player for all users, but if you sign up for an account (it's free), you can also enable parental controls (options are kids mode, teen mode, and grown-up mode).

Here are some examples of the most popular movies on Crackle: Blitz, Far Cry, Pursued, It Came From the Desert, and Journey to the Center of the Earth.

Includes thousands of free videos.

Adds new movies often.

No ads display within the movies.

Loads of genres to pick from.

Unique movies.

Must have a supported library card or school account.

The Kanopy movie streaming site is different from these other choices because you need a valid library card or university login before you can watch anything. However, there are zero commercials in the movies, and new films are added every month.

Use the Kanopy signup page to search for your library, whether it's a public library or one attached to a school. You can start watching movies after you've been approved.

Kanopy does a great job providing useful categories to look through. There's Short Film, History - Ancient, LGBTQ Cinema, War & Action, Sociology, Performing Arts, Human Rights, Everyday Health, and K-12 Lessons .

A few of the more popular movies here include Memento, The Girl on the Train, and Maurice.

There's also an entirely separate section for Kanopy kids movies . My son's old enough now to watch non-kid movies, but if he weren't, I'd be thrilled with this. There are subsections like Story Time and Read-Along Storybooks . You can also set up parental controls to force only age-appropriate content.

Free Movies Online: 100 Fresh Movies to Watch Online For Free

This month's new additions include ghostbusters (1984), ghostbusters (2016), friday , the invisible man (2020), saving private ryan , and more..

TAGGED AS: Crackle , Freevee , movies , streaming , Tubi , Vudu , YouTube

Apps and sites like Crackle, Freevee, Peacock, Pluto TV, Tubi, Vudu and YouTube all have free movies online for you to stream. The only catch: You have to watch ads. On the plus side, while there are commercial interruptions, the movies are not edited for content like they are on broadcast channels. Which means you can still watch uncut movies and with fewer total interruptions than television airings.

And did we mention the movies were free ?

Which movies should you watch, though, now that you know where to find them? Rotten Tomatoes did some digging and sorted through the free movie catalogs of Peacock, Vudu, Tubi, Freevee, YouTube, and Crackle to find the 100 best movies available to watch for free right now. These films, all Fresh on the Tomatometer, include Oscar winners, blockbusters, comedy classics, informative documentaries, and family favorites — all available to watch for free.

Check out our list of the Freshest movies to watch free online to find something new without paying rental or subscription fees.

The Virgin Suicides

' sborder=

Awakenings (1990)

Critics Consensus: Elevated by some of Robin Williams’ finest non-comedic work and a strong performance from Robert De Niro, Awakenings skirts the edges of melodrama, then soars above it.

Where to Stream: Pluto TV

' sborder=

Back to School (1986)

Critics Consensus: Back to School gives Rodney Dangerfield plenty of room to riff — and supports the freewheeling funnyman with enough of a story to keep things interesting between punchlines.

' sborder=

Bound (1996)

Critics Consensus: Bound ‘s more titillating elements attracted attention, but it’s the stylish direction, solid performances, and entertaining neo-noir caper plot that make it worth a watch.

' sborder=

Chicago (2002)

Critics Consensus: A rousing and energetic adaptation of the Broadway musical, Chicago succeeds on the level of pure spectacle, but provides a surprising level of depth and humor as well.

' sborder=

Dick (1999)

Critics Consensus:  A clever, funny slice of alternate history, Dick farcically re-imagines the Watergate era and largely succeeds, thanks to quirky, winning performances from Michelle Williams, Kirsten Dunst and Will Ferrell.

' sborder=

Friday (1995)

Critics Consensus: What Friday might lack in taut construction or directorial flair, it more than makes up with its vibrant (albeit consistently crass) humor and the charming, energetic performances of its leads.

Where to Stream: Tubi

' sborder=

Ghostbusters (1984)

Critics Consensus: An infectiously fun blend of special effects and comedy, with Bill Murray’s hilarious deadpan performance leading a cast of great comic turns.

Where to Stream: YouTube

' sborder=

Ghostbusters (2016)

Critics Consensus: Ghostbusters does an impressive job of standing on its own as a freewheeling, marvelously cast supernatural comedy — even if it can’t help but pale somewhat in comparison with the classic original.

Where to Stream: Freevee

' sborder=

The Invisible Man (2020)

Critics Consensus: Smart, well-acted, and above all scary, The Invisible Man proves that sometimes, the classic source material for a fresh reboot can be hiding in plain sight.

Where to Stream: Freevee March 19

' sborder=

Jack Reacher (2012)

Critics Consensus: Jack Reacher is an above-average crime thriller with a smoothly charismatic performance from Tom Cruise.

' sborder=

Julie & Julia (2009)

Critics Consensus: Boosted by Meryl Streep’s charismatic performance as Julia Child, Julie and Julia is a light, but fairly entertaining culinary comedy

' sborder=

The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)

Critics Consensus: The Killing of a Sacred Deer continues director Yorgos Lanthimos’ stubbornly idiosyncratic streak — and demonstrates again that his is a talent not to be ignored.

' sborder=

Lady Bird (2017)

Critics Consensus: Lady Bird delivers fresh insights about the turmoil of adolescence — and reveals writer-director Greta Gerwig as a fully formed filmmaking talent.

Where to Stream: Pluto TV , Tubi , Vudu , YouTube

' sborder=

The Lookout (2007)

Critics Consensus: The Lookout is a genuinely suspenseful and affecting noir due to the great ensemble cast and their complex, realistic characters.

' sborder=

Mr. Mom (1983)

Critics Consensus: Mr. Mom makes up for its stereotype-driven premise with a sweet script and charming work from a well-matched cast led by Michael Keaton and Teri Garr.

Where to Stream: Pluto TV , Tubi

' sborder=

Precious: Based on the Novel "Push" by Sapphire (2009)

Critics Consensus: Precious is a grim yet ultimately triumphant film about abuse and inner-city life, largely bolstered by exceptional performances from its cast.

' sborder=

The Queen (2006)

Critics Consensus: Full of wit, humor, and pathos, Stephen Frears’ moving portrait looks at life of the British royals during the period after Princess Diana’s death.

' sborder=

Reservoir Dogs (1992)

Critics Consensus: Thrumming with intelligence and energy, Reservoir Dogs opens Quentin Tarantino’s filmmaking career with hard-hitting style.

' sborder=

Rounders (1998)

Critics Consensus: Richly atmospheric and colorful performances contributed to the movie’s entertainment value.

' sborder=

Safe (2012)

Critics Consensus: While hard-hitting and violently inventive, Safe ultimately proves too formulaic to set itself apart from the action thriller pack — including some of its star’s better films.

' sborder=

Saving Private Ryan (1998)

Critics Consensus: Anchored by another winning performance from Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg’s unflinchingly realistic war film virtually redefines the genre.

' sborder=

A Simple Favor (2018)

Critics Consensus: Twisty, twisted, and above all simply fun, A Simple Favor casts a stylish mommy noir spell strengthened by potent performances from Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively.

' sborder=

A Simple Plan (1998)

Critics Consensus: A riveting crime thriller full of emotional tension.

' sborder=

21 Jump Street (2012)

Critics Consensus: A smart, affectionate satire of ’80s nostalgia and teen movie tropes, 21 Jump Street offers rowdy mainstream comedy with a surprisingly satisfying bite.

' sborder=

22 Jump Street (2014)

Critics Consensus: Boasting even more of the bromantic chemistry between its stars — and even more of the goofy, good-natured humor that made its predecessor so much fun — 22 Jump Street is the rare sequel that improves upon the original.

' sborder=

The Virgin Suicides (1999)

Critics Consensus: The Virgin Suicides drifts with a dreamlike melancholy that may strike some audiences as tedious, but Sofia Coppola’s feature debut is a mature meditation on disaffected youth.

' sborder=

' sborder=

Galaxy Quest (1999)

Critics Consensus: Intelligent and humorous satire with an excellent cast — no previous Trekkie knowledge needed to enjoy this one.

The Lighthouse (2019)

Critics Consensus: A gripping story brilliantly filmed and led by a pair of powerhouse performances, The Lighthouse further establishes Robert Eggers as a filmmaker of exceptional talent.

' sborder=

Little Women (1994)

Critics Consensus: Thanks to a powerhouse lineup of talented actresses, Gillian Armstrong’s take on Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women proves that a timeless story can succeed no matter how many times it’s told.

' sborder=

Strictly Ballroom (1992)

Critics Consensus: As emotionally rich as it is eye-catching, Strictly Ballroom uses its infectious energy as the fuel for a modern dance classic with all the right moves.

' sborder=

Swingers (1996)

Critics Consensus: Funny, heartfelt, and effortlessly cool, Swingers made stars out of Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau, established Doug Liman as a director to watch.

' sborder=

Child's Play (1988)

Critics Consensus: Child’s Play occasionally stumbles across its tonal tightrope of comedy and horror, but its genuinely creepy monster and some deft direction by Tom Holland makes this chiller stand out on the shelf.

' sborder=

Dead Man Walking (1995)

Critics Consensus: A powerful, thought-provoking film that covers different angles of its topic without resorting to preaching, Dead Man Walking will cause the viewer to reflect regardless of their political viewpoint.

' sborder=

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988)

Critics Consensus: A buoyant, clever update of the conman flick Bedtime Story , with plenty of comedic jousting resulting from a winning chemistry between Michael Caine and Steve Martin.

' sborder=

In & Out (1997)

Critics Consensus: It doesn’t always find comfortable ground between broad comedy and social commentary, but lively performances — especially from Kevin Kline and Joan Cusack — enrich In & Out ‘s mixture of laughs and sexual tolerance.

' sborder=

Inside Llewyn Davis (2013)

Critics Consensus: Smart, funny, and profoundly melancholy, Inside Llewyn Davis finds the Coen brothers in fine form.

' sborder=

Mean Girls (2004)

Critics Consensus: Elevated by a brilliant screenplay and outstanding ensemble cast, Mean Girls finds fresh, female-fronted humor in the high school experience.

' sborder=

Moonstruck (1987)

Critics Consensus: Led by energetic performances from Nicolas Cage and Cher, Moonstruck is an exuberantly funny tribute to love and one of the decade’s most appealing comedies.

' sborder=

Mystic Pizza (1988)

Critics Consensus: Mystic Pizza is like its namesake food: it’s cheesy, topped with romance, and rises to the occasion.

' sborder=

The Raid 2 (2014)

Critics Consensus: Although its high-energy plot and over-the-top violence may play better with genre aficionados, The Raid 2 definitely delivers more of everything audiences loved about its predecessor.

' sborder=

Rain Man (1988)

Critics Consensus: This road-trip movie about an autistic savant and his callow brother is far from seamless, but Barry Levinson’s direction is impressive, and strong performances from Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman add to its appeal.

' sborder=

South Park: The Movie (1999)

Critics Consensus: Its jokes are profoundly bold and rude but incredibly funny at the same time.

' sborder=

Zola (2020)

Critics Consensus: Zola captures the stranger-than-fiction appeal of the viral Twitter thread that inspired it — and announces director/co-writer Janicza Bravo as a filmmaker to watch.

' sborder=

Thief (1981)

Critics Consensus: Thief ‘s enigmatic conclusion will rob some audiences of satisfaction, but it’s an authentic and sleekly rendered neo-noir, powered by a swaggering James Caan at the peak of his charisma.

' sborder=

Belfast (2021)

Critics Consensus: A deeply personal project for writer-director Kenneth Branagh, Belfast transcends its narrative deficits with powerful performances and directorial craft.

' sborder=

Chinatown (1974)

Critics Consensus: As bruised and cynical as the decade that produced it, this noir classic benefits from Robert Towne’s brilliant screenplay, director Roman Polanski’s steady hand, and wonderful performances from Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway.

' sborder=

The Founder (2016)

Critics Consensus: The Founder puts Michael Keaton’s magnetic performance at the center of a smart, satisfying biopic that traces the rise of one of America’s most influential businessmen — and the birth of one of its most far-reaching industries.

' sborder=

The 15 Best Sites to Watch Movies for Free (Legally!)

Looking for the best free online movie streaming sites? Here's where you can watch free and legal movies anytime you like.

Although free movie streaming might sound synonymous with piracy, there are loads of legal free movie websites on the internet. These are packed full of movies you can stream for free without breaking the law.

Whether you're looking for movies or TV shows, finding free videos to stream is totally feasible; it just requires that you know where to look. With that in mind, here are the best free online movie streaming sites to check out.

What to Expect From Free Movie Streaming Sites

There are a ton of free, legal videos online, so you'll find a great mix of options on the below services. A healthy amount of the movies available to stream for free are in the public domain. Because these films have lapsed in ownership and fallen into common property, many sites host such video treasures.

But it isn't just B-movies available to stream online; you'll also find many big-budget releases. Usually, these are ad-supported, so like watching a movie on TV, you'll have to sit through limited commercials. Nevertheless, the movies are usually presented uncut.

You shouldn't expect to see the latest releases. Instead, you'll mostly see movies dating back anywhere from a few months to many years. Additionally, some sites include original productions and amateur films.

To watch on the go, don't forget to also install some of the best free movie apps on your phone.

It's no surprise that YouTube ranks among the best free movie streaming sites you can find. It offers a ton of free films to pick from, including many public domain films from channels such as the aptly titled Public Domain Films .

Furthermore, channels like Popcornflix host full movies via YouTube, and you'll find an official Free to Watch section in YouTube's Movies & Shows hub. There's a fantastic mix, with everything from classic comedies to sports and much more. It's a far cry from channels that only offer movies from the 1950s you've never heard of.

You may have to dig a bit for what you want to watch. But for those with patience, YouTube is a treasure trove of free, legal movies to stream.

Boasting a solid array of syndicated content and its own productions, Crackle is a must for any film buff . Its rotating selection varies, but you'll find quality movies across genres here.

Aside from films, Crackle features television shows, including original programming. And by making a free account, you can enjoy Crackle on your TV too.

CONtv, formerly known as Viewster, features live TV, shows, and movies. Among the TV shows on offer, you'll still find some free movies to enjoy here, including a lot of horror B-films. Some of it requires a subscription, but a lot of the content is available to watch for free.

While Vudu is known for its digital video rentals and sales, it has a sizable selection of free movies to stream too. With a comprehensive array of movies and TV shows, plus fresh additions arriving regularly, it's a fantastic service.

Vudu's free section operates similarly to Crackle by providing full movies with limited commercials. Through hosting films with ads, Vudu is able to offer free movies and TV shows legally.

You need to register for a free Vudu account to use this service, but it's worth doing so. Once you do, you can use your account to activate digital copies of movies and shows, as well as buy and rent movies from Vudu.

5. Popcornflix

Like Crackle, Popcornflix presents full movies with limited ads. Here, you'll find a range of movies in a rotating selection, and there's no account required to start watching. The service even offers some original content, to boot.

Flicks are segmented into genres that are more unique than the standard ones, such as Out for Revenge and Medieval Action . With a beefy lineup and easy navigation, Popcornflix is an awesome choice for free, legal movie streaming.

Providing free movies and shows, Tubi is another fantastic service for legal movie streams. Here, you'll be able to view newer movies from as recent as 2022, as well as older favorites.

Helpfully, Tubi offers a Leaving Soon category. This lets you prioritize your streaming queue so you can catch movies and shows before they disappear. Be sure to check out the First Time on Tubi collection, too.

7. Pluto TV

Pluto TV has a lot to offer. You'll find a Live TV section where you can switch between channels, much like traditional cable. Switch to the Live TV section on the left side to jump to channels that only play films, though they may be in the middle of something depending on when you start watching.

If you can't find something that you like on the live stations, switch to the On Demand section at the top. Here you'll find tons of free movies you can start streaming right away.

8. Classic Cinema Online

As the name suggests, Classic Cinema Online focuses on older content. Even its website aesthetic captures a decidedly retro vibe, using a backdrop of red theater curtains. You can walk through the decades here with films from the 1930s to the 1960s. There are even some silent films on offer, if you're interested in those.

Some of the inclusions may have you calling the definition of "classic cinema" into question. Nevertheless, Classic Cinema Online is pure gold for old-school movies and one of the best sites for public domain films .

Hoopla has one barrier to entry, but is still an easy way to legally watch movies online for free. To use Hoopla, you'll need to create an account and link your supported public library card.

Once you do, you can use Hoopla to borrow movies and TV shows, plus audiobooks and ebooks, from your library's collection. The service is available on the web as well as apps for all your devices and TV streaming boxes.

If you don't have a library card or your library doesn't support Hoopla, you won't be able to use it. But if you can, it's a service worth checking out.

Although Yidio isn't a video host, it does act as an excellent aggregator of free streaming movies and TV shows. The way Yidio works is by redirecting you to third-party services such as Amazon Prime, Netflix, and others. As such, certain films and shows here do require a subscription.

Using the Free filter on the left side will help you find movies and TV that come at no cost. Unfortunately, not everything in the free categories is actually free. Clicking on some titles prompts you to sign up for a free trial.

Still, Yidio makes finding free movie streams far easier than checking individual sites manually. You can filter by rating, genre, and more to find something to watch.

11. The Roku Channel

Don't be fooled by The Roku Channel's name. While it's available for Roku streaming devices via an app, you can watch on the web too. With a few clicks, you can stream Roku Originals, popular TV shows, and new-arrival movies.

The selection rotates, and there are categories on the main page to help you find something you'll enjoy. As expected, you'll have to sit through ads, but ad-supported means free, right?

Libraries are most often associated with books, but that's not all they provide. Kanopy, like Hoopla mentioned above, lets you stream tons of "thoughtful entertainment" movies for free, making it another great way to get free content with a participating library card (or university login).

With either of those, you can watch hundreds of free movies. These include a lot of documentaries and international films, so this is a great fit for those who want something a little different.

13. Amazon Freevee

Amazon Freevee (formerly IMDb TV) lets you enjoy free movies on Amazon Video. The service launched in 2019 and while its name has changed, the experience has remained the same. It allows anyone with a free account to watch a selection of free movies and TV shows. In addition to watching online, you can enjoy this content on your Fire TV, Xbox, PlayStation, and other streaming devices.

Alongside the movies, you'll also find some TV series (including live channels) and originals to enjoy.

14. Free Movies Cinema

As the name suggests, Free Movies Cinema features legal free movie streaming. Unlike many sites, the selection touts not only general categories like action and comedy, but also short films and features.

There's also a collection of fan-made movies, such as Portal and Watch Dogs, based on video games of the same names.

15. Top Documentary Films

If you're looking for free documentaries, you'll find plenty at Top Documentary Films. It packs a varied selection, including amateur documentaries you might not have heard about before.

Browse the Top 100 documentaries to find something that's popular, or take a look at recently added movies or the various genres to drill down a bit.

The Best Free Movie Sites for Everyone

With these free online movie streaming sites, you now know where to look for hundreds of free movies. Enjoy these legal films anytime, anywhere so you never go without something to watch.

Meanwhile, you should also know how to legally download movies for offline use, so you can enjoy them on your next flight or long trip.

The Best Free Movie Sites and Apps: Watch Free Movies Online

Here's where you can stream hundreds of movies online for free..

The Best Free Movie Sites and Apps: Watch Free Movies Online - IGN Image

As convenient as today's grand selection of paid streaming services is, sometimes it feels good to watch a movie knowing that you aren't paying for a subscription. Luckily, there is an array of websites and services that make this possible, even with the existence of their fierce competitors. While they are less sought-after or convenience incentivized than services like Netflix , Hulu , or HBO Max , they are perfect for those penny-pinching movie viewers looking to save. Since there are so many paid streaming services in 2024, for many–if not all–of the sites on this list, advertisements are an obvious obligation.

Since there are so many options that come up from a simple search, this list will be a guide for the free movie sites that tend to be a bit less risky than some alternative options. There are plenty of sites available that are illegal in multiple provinces and countries, it should be noted that the free movie websites and appson this list are all legal in the way that the streaming rights were acquired.

Paramount+ Free-Trial

The Roku Channel

One of the few on this list that has its own original content, The Roku Channel is a unique option for the casual viewer. With no need to sign up or register, it’s easy to start streaming one of the many titles available. While it is one of the favored free sites to stream, the quality of content is somewhat limited, making it a good option to catch an arthouse film you may have missed. And if you’ve been wanting to watch the Weird Al movie , this is the only place you can.

With a surprisingly impressive interface, Pluto TV acts almost as an interactive TV Guide of movies and TV shows. With multiple options for the layout, anyone who visits this site–no registration required–will have access to a fairly large catalog of movies. While there are no popup or banner ads, there are still ads that may interrupt in the middle of a scene or dialogue.

A site with a higher standard of big movies available for free, Plex is a good choice for the money-saving cinephile. After a quick sign-in through Google, Facebook, or Apple, a viewer can watch many popular movies with the cast, internet ratings, and reviews from mainstream sites right there in the film summary section. On top of that, Plex is available to stream through the app on an extremely wide array of devices.

For those skeptical about the safety of various unknown websites, a well-known and overall trusted source of free movies is YouTube . While all of the movies contain a higher frequency of ads than other sites, the amount of mainstream options available here is worth the look. Since it’s a familiar layout for most, navigating the site shouldn’t cause any holdups.

Another of the sites on this list growing in popularity, Tubi rivals the best when it comes to layout and movie selection. While it resembles Netflix in look and interface, Tubi is one of the few options here that are only available in some countries: the U.S. included. It’s also got some nostalgic classics that might interest the millennial crowd.

Tubi is also a great place to stream anime for free , making it a very well-rounded service.

While Crackle carries a lot of generally unknown sequels or continuations of movie series, the sheer amount of content is enough to justify a visit. Regarding safety, this site is among the more easily trustworthy sites, as Sony is held to a much higher standard than your everyday streaming site. Along with these other pros, the ads are actually a bit lower in frequency and annoyance than the other sites.

Taking on more of an Amazon feel, Vudu has options for purchasable, rentable, on-sale, or free movies. While there are not multitudes of ideal options for movies free to watch, it still remains another good option if you’re looking for a very particular movie. As a huge bonus, the ads for this website are quite minimal in comparison to other sites mentioned.

Freevee (fka IMDB TV)

movie on websites

A sub-site of Amazon (formerly IMDB), Freevee has transitioned to an app-only format that requires an Amazon sign-in. Obviously available through Amazon Prime, free movies from Freevee can also be streamed via Fire TV, Apple TV, Google TV, Echo Show, and more. While the library is not as expansive as some, users can feel a sense of comfort streaming through a website they may already be subscribed to: Amazon.

movie on websites

Another site where streaming live TV is an option, XUMO Play has some pretty great movie options that arguably rival the other services, depending on what a viewer is looking for. With specialized lists of movies and vast device compatibility, this is an underrated underdog of a streaming site.

movie on websites

Quite unique to this list, registration is required but the criteria needed for registration are a bit strange. In order to sign up for this ad-free, simultaneously streaming website, one needs to have either a public library card or a university login. The options are better than most for movies after registration, all of which can be enjoyed on your TV, mobile phone, tablet, or online. Kanopy is a great way to get free movies without ads.

Popcornflix

movie on websites

Popcornflix is another way to get your free movie and TV show fix (no pun intended). No registration is required, though you will have to sit through ads with whatever you choose to watch. It has quite the range of shows and films as well, both in genre and release, so you're sure to find something to suit your next movie night or TV binge-watch.

More Ways to Watch Free Movies Online in 2024

Another great way to watch free movies online is by taking advantage of free trials from different streaming services . If you're not already a member, both Prime Video and Hulu offer a 30-day free trial, but the latter depends on what plan you're interested in. At the moment, you can take advantage of the 30-day free trial on Hulu by signing up for their No Ads plan (which is $14.99/month once the trial ends). Paramount+ and Apple TV+ also offer a free trial period, though they're both 7 days long rather than 30 days.

BREAKING:  No charges in death of nonbinary Oklahoma teen Nex Benedict, DA says

In 'The Casagrandes Movie,' a family trip to Mexico turns into a wild adventure

The Casagrandes Movie

A new animated fantasy comedy movie that follows the adventures of a preteen Latina who wants to do her own thing while surrounded by her multigenerational Mexican American family premieres Friday on Netflix.

“The Casagrandes Movie” extends the fun of the Nickelodeon series that ran for three years before wrapping up in 2022. The film features Ronalda “Ronnie Anne” Santiago — who first appeared as a character in Nickelodeon's “The Loud House” before getting her own series — who's looking forward to spending summer vacation skateboarding with her friends, but is instead surprised with a family trip to Mexico to visit her relatives for her 12th birthday.

Voiced by actor Izabella Alvarez, Ronnie Anne ends up accidentally freeing the ancient, angst-filled demigod Punguari of the Purépecha, an Indigenous community in the Mexican state of Michoacán.

The Casagrandes Movie

“The best part for me is that we got to represent the Purépecha community — you hear about Aztecs and Mayans, but there are many Indigenous cultures in Mexico,” director Miguel Puga told NBC News in an interview. Puga grew up traveling to that region of Mexico during his own summer and winter school breaks.

The movie included cultural consultants to ensure correct and appropriate language and images, and while it's largely in English, the film includes some Spanish and Purépecha.

The cast includes actors Sonia Manzano, who played the iconic María on “Sesame Street”; Cristo Fernández of “ Ted Lasso ” fame; and Kate del Castillo.

“When I do anything, I always think, ‘What would I want to watch?’ And representation is always something fought for in this movie; my daughter is 10 years old, and I want her to see herself in the characters,” Puga said. “People can say, ‘Hey, there are people that look like me.’ This movie is fun for all ages.”

The movie "deals with some mother-daughter drama that is universal, and it features 'la chancla,' which is also universal — that’s a funny part and a big part of the movie," Puga said, referring to the "chancla force" unleashed by Ronnie Anne's grandmother when she uses her "chancla," or house slippers, as a weapon.

Cartoonist and humorist Lalo Alcaraz is one of the movie’s writers and a cultural consultant.

“The family trips to Mexico are something real common around the West and Southwest because we’re so close to the border, but it may not be known to many elsewhere, so I’m glad we were able to show that,” he said. “And you don’t normally see the Mexican culture from Michoacán. I want us to see ourselves reflected not just in a positive way but also in a realistic way, and cartoons, animation, is a good way to tell the truth.

“I want people to enjoy seeing themselves and being reminded of their families, and maybe it will inspire people to go to Mexico more and for some to go to get to know their background,” Alcaraz said.

The Casagrandes Movie

Rosemary Contreras, previously a story editor and writer on several shows including “Dora the Explorer,” “Go, Diego, Go!” and “Dora and Friends,” is also one of the movie's writers and was planning to take her 12-year-old daughter, a “huge” “Casagrandes” fan, to the premiere.

"As a child growing up in the San Fernando Valley (California), we never had this," Contreras said. "So the fact that I can give my daughter a movie that has not only an awesome all-brown familia, along with the cast and a lot of the crew, it’s a dream come true. It's such a rare thing."

Puga said he was still "pinching myself every day because I got to direct this movie. ... Putting more of us on the screen is something I want to keep doing."

All 4 2024 Animated Disney & Pixar Movies Releasing This Year

Discover every animated movie set to be released by Disney and Pixar Animation Studios in 2024.

As Walt Disney Studios looks to rebound from a disappointing 2023, all eyes turn to what the Mouse House has in store for 2024 . In addition to re-releasing three popular animated movies in theaters and through the Disney+ platform this calendar year, the studio has officially announced the upcoming release of three new animated movies for fans to look forward to. Meanwhile, a handful of unspecified Disney movies have been given 2024 release dates, leaving many to wonder which will be animated and which will be live-action.

To help moviegoers keep track of Disney's upcoming movie slate, including the studio's long-held partnership with Pixar Animation Studios, it's worth analyzing which animated movies are on pace to open theatrically in 2024. In addition to a pair of popular sequels opening in the summer and fall, Disney has plans to unveil its most ambitious original movie at the end of 2024. With springtime abound, it's time to lay out Disney's animated movie schedule for 2024.

Luca (2021)

Re-releasing on march 22, 2024.

*Availability in US

Not available

Following the theatrical re-releases of Soul in January and Turning Red in February 2024, Disney and Pixar are slated to re-release Luca in theaters on March 22, 2024. Directed by Enrico Casarosa from a script he co-wrote with Jesse Andrews and Simon Stephenson, Luca is an enchanting coming-of-age tale that follows the title character, a shape-shifting sea monster posing as a young boy who spends his summer on the lush Italian Riviera in 1959. Between the profound tale of friendship and the sunny seaside beauty of Italy during the summer, Luca is an irresistibly charming movie with a moving message about finding oneself and embracing one's true identity.

While perhaps not on par with Pixar's most emotional movies , such as Toy Story 3 , Up, WALL. E , and Inside Out, Luca drew positive reviews for its gorgeous setting, tender story, and underlying message about remaining true to oneself despite the consequences. Although Luca can currently be streamed on Disney+, those who missed the movie on the big screen will have a chance to do so when Disney re-releases the movie in theaters on March 22, 2024.

Inside Out 2 (2024)

Releasing on june 14, 2024, inside out 2.

After Luca, the next animated movie released by Disney and Pixar will be the hotly-anticipated Inside Out 2 . While the original Inside Out was directed by Pete Docter and Ronnie Del Carmen, Inside Out 2 is directed by Kelsey Mann. The story continues the emotional expressions of Riley Anderson, who must navigate confusing new emotions as she enters her teenage years. This time out, Riley is voiced by Kensington Tallman, who replaces Kaitlyn Dias from the original.

New emotions joining Riley's mind include Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Envy (Cynthia Erivo), Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos), and Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser), as feelings of self-doubt creep in during her adolescent phase . Inside Out 2 marks Mann's feature-length directorial debut after directing the animated short Party Central for Pixar's short film collection. The script was written by Meg LaFauve, who co-wrote the original with Docter and Del Carmen. The first trailer for Inside Out 2 attracted 157 million internet views in 24 hours, the highest figure for any Disney animated film to date.

What the Inside Out 2 Cast Looks Like in Real Life

Moana 2 (2024), releasing on november 27, 2024.

Following Inside Out 2 , the next culturally diverse animated movie on Disney 's release schedule is Moana 2. Poised to open theatrically on November 27, 2024, the Thanksgiving holiday event will continue the spiritual journey of Moana's (Auli'i Cravalho) self-discovery as she braves the high seas and takes on a dangerous mission in Oceana. Dwayne Johnson will reprise his role as Maui in the animated musical adventure film, with Alan Tudyk joining the cast as a character named Hei Hei.

Although the original Moana is directed by John Musker and Ron Clements from a script by Jared Bush, Moana 2 is written and directed by David G. Derrick Jr. Moana 2 marks Derrick Jr.'s feature-length directorial debut after working as a storyboard artist on several animated films since 2006. As for Lin Manuel Miranda's unforgettable music featured in the original, the music for Moana 2 was written by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear. Original composers Marc Mancina and Opetaia Foa'i have also returned for Moana 2 .

Mufasa: The Lion King (2024)

Releasing on december 20, 2024, mufasa: the lion king.

Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Barry Jenkins ( Moonlight ), Mufasa: The Lion King is set to open theatrically on December 20, 2024. Arguably saving its most ambitious project for last as a grand Christmas gift, the upcoming Disney movie combines live-action footage with photorealistic CG animation to create a new visual aesthetic. The story is set before the events of the 2019 live-action remake of The Lion King and will serve as an official prequel.

Mufasa: The Lion King will tell the origin story of Mufasa (Aaron Pierre) from the perspective of grandchildren Rafiki (John Kani) and Kiara after Simba ascends as the new leader of the Pride Lands. Joining Pierre and Kani in the cast are Seth Rogen (Pumbaa), Kelvin Harrison Jr. (Scar), and Billy Eichner (Timon). Although Mufasa was originally scheduled to open in theaters on July 5, 2024, the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike forced the studio to postpone the release until December 20, 2024. While not much else is known about the origin story, fans should rest easy knowing Barry Jenkins at the helm.

Every Disney Live Action Remake, Ranked

Unspecified disney movies with 2024 release dates.

Beyond the four officially scheduled animated movie sequels and remakes , Disney has given a handful of unspecified movies 2024 release dates. The studio plans to release up to five movies between August 2 and November 16, 2024, partnering with such production companies as 20th Century Studios and Searchlight Pictures. While there is no telling which movies will be animated, if any, it's worth keeping track of Disney's designated release schedule after Inside Out 2 hits theaters in June.

  • August 2, 2024 - Released Under Studio Label 20th Century Studios
  • August 30, 2024 - Released Under Studio Label Searchlight Pictures
  • September 6, 2024 - Released Under Studio Label Walt Disney Pictures
  • October 4, 2024 - Released Under Studio Label 20th Century Studios
  • November 16, 2024 - Released Under Studio Searchlight Pictures

Disney's 2024 Release Schedule

While the unspecified movie release on September 6th is the most likely to be an animated movie for Walt Disney Pictures, only time will tell which upcoming animated features will round out the studio's 2024 production slate. Meanwhile, Inside Out 2 is Pixar's only movie scheduled for 2024, with the studio's next animated feature Elio scheduled for June 2025.

Even the stars of 'Madame Web' can't get away from the Sony Marvel movie fast enough

  • The cast of "Madame Web" are already distancing themselves from the Sony Marvel movie.
  • Dakota Johnson previously said she doesn't "make sense in that world."
  • Now Sydney Sweeney is the second "Madame Web" star to react to the failure of the superhero film.

Insider Today

With Sony's " Madame Web " failing to ignite the box office, the actors from the Marvel movie are already distancing themselves from the Spider-Man adjacent project.

The film, released on Valentine's Day, follows Cassandra Web ( Dakota Johnson ) a paramedic who develops the ability to see into future and protects three young women from villain Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahim) because they're destined to be superheroes.

Both Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney , who played Julia Cornwall, have reacted to the film's critical and commercial failure in an apparent attempt to put their brush with the superhero genre behind them.

Sweeney told the Los Angeles Times : "I was just hired as an actress in it, so I was just along for the ride for whatever was going to happen."

Sweeney's comments come soon after she poked fun at the film when hosting " Saturday Night Live ," where she told audiences: "You might have seen me in 'Anyone but You' or 'Euphoria.' You definitely did not see me in 'Madame Web.'"

Sony owns the rights to Spider-Man and all of his related characters, but its movies are mostly separate from Disney's Marvel Cinematic Universe, and they don't drum up the same level of commercial success.

"Madame Web" earned itself a lowly 12% critic's rating on Rotten Tomatoes . Audiences also spoke with their wallets, as it scraped in $96 million worldwide against a reported $100 million budget, per The Hollywood Reporter .

Related stories

That pales in comparison to Marvel's highest-grossing movie, "Avengers: Endgame," which earned $2.799 billion .

Dakota Johnson said 'Madame Web' didn't turn out how she expected

When speaking to Bustle in early March, Johnson also distanced herself from the superhero genre.

"I had never done anything like it before. I probably will never do anything like it again because I don't make sense in that world. And I know that now," she said.

The star then suggested that the idea for "Madame Web" looked different when she originally signed onto the project.

"Sometimes in this industry, you sign on to something, and it's one thing and then as you're making it, it becomes a completely different thing, and you're like, 'Wait, what?'" Johnson added.

"But it was a real learning experience, and of course it's not nice to be a part of something that's ripped to shreds, but I can't say that I don't understand."

This isn't the first time a Sony Marvel movie has bombed spectacularly. The 2022 Jared Leto vampire vehicle, "Morbius," also failed to meet expectations . It only managed to earn $167 million against its $83 million budget.

Sony still has two superhero movies on its slate for 2024, "Kraven," starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and "Venom: The Last Dance," with Tom Hardy reprising his role as the black symbiote.

Hopefully, they're more successful than "Madame Web," and "Morbius," because Sony can't afford any more Marvel misfires.

Cillian Murphy Peaky Blinders

It looks like we haven’t seen the last of gangster Tommy Shelby after all. Speaking to Birmingham World at the premiere of his new BBC drama “The Town,” “ Peaky Blinders ” creator Steven Knight confirmed that recent Oscar winner Cillian Murphy will be reprising his beloved role in the upcoming film version of the British crime drama. Knight said Murphy is “definitely” coming back, and filming on the “Peaky Blinders” movie kicks off this September.

“He definitely is returning for it. We’re shooting it in September just down the road in Digbeth,” Knight confirmed.

Variety has reached out to Murphy’s representatives for additional comment.

“If there’s more story there, I’d love to do it,” Murphy told  Rolling Stone U.K.  last year about a “Peaky” movie. “But it has to be right. Steve Knight wrote 36 hours of television, and we left on such a high. I’m really proud of that last series. So, it would have to feel legitimate and justified to do more.”

Murphy told the Irish Star just last month ahead of winning the Oscar: “I have always said that if Knight delivers a script that I know he can deliver, because he is such a phenomenal writer, I’ll be there. … If we want to watch 50-year-old Tommy Shelby, I will be there. Let’s do it.”

During a conversation for  Variety ‘s Actors on Actors  between Murphy and “Peaky Blinders” superfan Margot Robbie last year, she mentioned the series, saying, “Can we please talk about Tommy fucking Shelby for just one minute?” She then asked him about a potential spinoff movie, begging him to do one, to which Murphy said: “I mean, I’m open to the idea. I’ve always thought that if there’s more story to tell.”

“Peaky Blinders” originally premiered on BBC Two overseas (its final two seasons moved to BBC One), but after the show arrived on Netflix its popularity exploded. The series finale aired in April 2022, but Knight never hid his intentions to continue the story in a movie.

Netflix movie 'Shirley' shows off Cincinnati City Hall, other local sites

movie on websites

Real-life sisters Regina King and Reina King star in the new Netflix movie, "Shirley," which depicts U.S. Rep. Shirley Chisholm's 1972 groundbreaking presidential run.

But the city of Cincinnati , where the movie was filmed in 2021 and 2022, might as well be a full-fledged co-star.

There's City Hall, sweeping views of the West End, Arnold's Bar and Grill, Court Street in Downtown and a church in the West End, among other places.

The locations are stand-ins for Brooklyn, New York, and Washington D.C., all key places in the life of Chisholm, the first Black woman elected to Congress.

"Shirley" debuts on Netflix on March 22.

The Enquirer got a sneak peek at an advance screening that ended with a question and answer period with the King sisters and producer Ted Gidlow, hosted by Film Cincinnati Executive Director Kristen Erwin Schlotman.

"One of the most special parts was we got to film in Cincinnati," Regina King told the audience. "Our family is from here."

The King sisters grew up in Los Angeles, but Christmases and Easters were spent in Cincinnati, she said.

City Manager Sheryl Long and Denisha Porter, executive director of the All-In Cincinnati Equity Coalition , both had cameos in the film and attended the screening. Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval, whose mayoral office was prominently featured in the film, was on hand with a proclamation for the sisters.

Regina King gave Pureval a special shoutout, calling him the "best-looking mayor."

"It had to be said," she added, drawing applause from the audience.

For those planning on tuning in, here's a guide to some of the Cincinnati places you'll see:

Cincinnati City Hall

Pureval's office is prominently featured as Chisholm's office and his leather couch and chair − where many conferences take place − got to stay. Regina King's Chisholm is seen parading through City Hall's grand hallway entrance.

Arnold's Bar and Grill

No movie that films in Cincinnati is complete without an Arnold's cameo . Located on East 8th Street, Arnold's was built in the late 1830s and its architecture served as a backdrop for a meeting.

Court Street

Much of the movie was filmed on Court Street in downtown Cincinnati. The grand Hamilton County Courthouse at the end of the street also makes an appearance.

The West End

Jerriel Missionary Baptist Church makes a cameo as the church Reina King's character, Muriel St. Hill, attends. The two characters have a deep conversation as the church casts a shadow over them. Street shots were also firmed there showing off Cincinnati's historic architecture.

A Third ‘Downton Abbey’ Movie Is Coming, One of Its Stars Says

Imelda Staunton, who played Queen Mary’s lady-in-waiting in the first two films, told the BBC that the next movie would be the “final” installment in the long-running franchise.

Members of the Downton Abbey household staff line up outside the estate as a visitor arrives in a car in a scene from the first “Downton Abbey” film.

By Remy Tumin

The Crawleys have endured heartbreak, abandonment at the altar and a burst ulcer . They have celebrated the births of heirs, inter-class marriages and (eventually) a child born out of wedlock. They even hesitantly embraced the advent of new technology like the telephone and moving pictures.

After six seasons on television and two movies, it seems they’re not done yet.

The Crawleys will return for a third — and possibly final — “Downton Abbey” film, one of its stars told BBC Radio 2.

“There will be the final film,” Imelda Staunton, who played Queen Mary’s lady-in-waiting in the first two movies, told the host Zoe Ball on Wednesday , taking long breaths between each word. “There you go.”

Ball said she hoped she hadn’t gotten Staunton in trouble for speaking out of turn.

“I don’t care,” Staunton said.

Focus Features, which distributed the past two films, did not respond to a request for comment. But rumors are already swirling about the plot and potential additions to the cast.

Across six seasons on ITV in Britain and PBS in the United States, Julian Fellowes , who wrote all 52 episodes, swept the tensions of the upstairs-downstairs class struggles into an idyllic escape for viewers. Gossipy zingers. Quiet class warfare. Socialism. Empire waists and beaded dresses. Dame Maggie Smith .

From 2010 to 2015, the “Downton” characters had gone through it all. Or so fans thought. But Fellowes wasn’t done and brought “Downton” to the big screen in 2019, much to the delight of fans.

Set in 1927, the first “Downton” movie followed a royal visit to the Grantham estate. But as Downton’s staff is pitted against the royal attendants, an assassin attempts to kill King George V. Meanwhile, Staunton’s character, Lady Maud Bagshaw, is at the center of an inheritance dispute.

A second movie, “ Downton Abbey: New Era ” (2022), followed the Crawleys as they welcomed a crew to Downton for the filming of a silent movie. Other members of the family went to the South of France to uncover a mystery.

In a red carpet interview before the “New Era” premiere, Fellowes said that his goal with the first film was to see if there was an appetite for more “Downton” antics, “and I think we established that there was if we could get it right.”

With the second film, as well as with the entire series, his goal was “people to have a good time,” Fellowes said. “I don’t see anything wrong in giving them a nice night out.”

An earlier version of this article misidentified the target of an assassination attempt in the first “Downton Abbey” film. It was King George V, not Queen Mary.
