Writing a second grade essay

In elementary school, children need to compose four kinds of passages:

  • Short responses to questions (one or two sentences),
  • Long responses to questions (about five sentences or one paragraph),
  • Narratives (stories of varying lengths), and
  • Essays (single paragraphs to five paragraphs).

The other night I received a call from a father whose second-grade son needed to write an essay on his favorite animal.  The child didn’t know what to do.  I asked the boy on the phone what his favorite animal is.  “Dogs,” he said, not a surprising answer since the boy has grown up with pet dogs.  I asked him why, and he identified several reasons.  I told him he needed to explain his reasons.  He told me that without problem.

I told him that to write the essay he needed to

  • First, write a sentence saying that dogs are his favorite animal.
  • Second, tell why dogs are his favorite animal, one sentence for each reason. Then he needed to add other sentences explaining why.  The best detail is one that begins with “for example,” I told him.
  • Last, end the essay by repeating that dogs are his favorite animal and name the reasons without the details.

Do you understand? I asked.  The boy grumbled in the background, but his father told me that he understood.  We ended the phone conversation.

The next morning, the father texted me the essay below.

essay writing for class 2

I don’t know how much direction the classroom teacher gave this boy.  It seemed like this was one of the first times the student was required to write an essay.  Did the teacher take the students through the organizational process?  Did she show organizational boxes for the student to fill in?  Did she model writing an essay or two or three in class?  Did she explain what information belonged in the first sentence or in the middle sentences or in the conclusion?  I suspect she didn’t since the boy—an A+ student—had no idea when I talked to him.  Yet after a five-minute phone call, he wrote a classic essay (for a second grader).

To be fair, I don’t know the circumstances surrounding this assignment.  Was the teacher a substitute?  Was there a fire drill taking up the time that the teacher wanted to use to preview this assignment?  Was the boy pulled out of class when the teacher  explained the assignment to the class?

I am left to wonder what training this boy’s teacher received to teach writing.  Perhaps, like all too many teachers, not enough.

My favorite place to visit is the park near my house. It’s a beautiful green space filled with trees, flowers, and chirping birds. The park has a playground with swings, slides, and a seesaw. I believe that having a class pet would make our classroom a happier and more educational place to be.

SET 6:

Family is an essential part of someone’s life. They are responsible for happiness and sadness. My family is my mother. My father passed away last year and both of us were left all to ourselves. My mother is a nurse and she is very caring and loving. She is extremely strong and she wants me to do better in my life. She motivates me to study harder to be a doctor in the future. I love my mother, she is my best friend and my whole world. She sits with me when I have to study for my exams and she is very patient with me. Some nights she is out for duty in the hospital and I have to stay alone in my house but she makes sure I have a life worth living. I love my family, my mother and I hope to make her happy and proud someday.

The Beginner's Guide to Writing an Essay | Steps & Examples

An academic essay is a focused piece of writing that develops an idea or argument using evidence, analysis, and interpretation.

There are many types of essays you might write as a student. The content and length of an essay depends on your level, subject of study, and course requirements. However, most essays at university level are argumentative — they aim to persuade the reader of a particular position or perspective on a topic.

The essay writing process consists of three main stages:

  • Preparation: Decide on your topic, do your research, and create an essay outline.
  • Writing : Set out your argument in the introduction, develop it with evidence in the main body, and wrap it up with a conclusion.
  • Revision:  Check your essay on the content, organization, grammar, spelling, and formatting of your essay.

The writing process of preparation, writing, and revisions applies to every essay or paper, but the time and effort spent on each stage depends on the type of essay .

For example, if you’ve been assigned a five-paragraph expository essay for a high school class, you’ll probably spend the most time on the writing stage; for a college-level argumentative essay , on the other hand, you’ll need to spend more time researching your topic and developing an original argument before you start writing.

Prevent plagiarism. Run a free check.

Before you start writing, you should make sure you have a clear idea of what you want to say and how you’re going to say it. There are a few key steps you can follow to make sure you’re prepared:

  • Understand your assignment: What is the goal of this essay? What is the length and deadline of the assignment? Is there anything you need to clarify with your teacher or professor?
  • Define a topic: If you’re allowed to choose your own topic , try to pick something that you already know a bit about and that will hold your interest.
  • Do your research: Read  primary and secondary sources and take notes to help you work out your position and angle on the topic. You’ll use these as evidence for your points.
  • Come up with a thesis:  The thesis is the central point or argument that you want to make. A clear thesis is essential for a focused essay—you should keep referring back to it as you write.
  • Create an outline: Map out the rough structure of your essay in an outline . This makes it easier to start writing and keeps you on track as you go.

Once you’ve got a clear idea of what you want to discuss, in what order, and what evidence you’ll use, you’re ready to start writing.

The introduction sets the tone for your essay. It should grab the reader’s interest and inform them of what to expect. The introduction generally comprises 10–20% of the text.

1. Hook your reader

The first sentence of the introduction should pique your reader’s interest and curiosity. This sentence is sometimes called the hook. It might be an intriguing question, a surprising fact, or a bold statement emphasizing the relevance of the topic.

Let’s say we’re writing an essay about the development of Braille (the raised-dot reading and writing system used by visually impaired people). Our hook can make a strong statement about the topic:

The invention of Braille was a major turning point in the history of disability.

2. Provide background on your topic

Next, it’s important to give context that will help your reader understand your argument. This might involve providing background information, giving an overview of important academic work or debates on the topic, and explaining difficult terms. Don’t provide too much detail in the introduction—you can elaborate in the body of your essay.

3. Present the thesis statement

Next, you should formulate your thesis statement— the central argument you’re going to make. The thesis statement provides focus and signals your position on the topic. It is usually one or two sentences long. The thesis statement for our essay on Braille could look like this:

As the first writing system designed for blind people’s needs, Braille was a groundbreaking new accessibility tool. It not only provided practical benefits, but also helped change the cultural status of blindness.

4. Map the structure

In longer essays, you can end the introduction by briefly describing what will be covered in each part of the essay. This guides the reader through your structure and gives a preview of how your argument will develop.

The invention of Braille marked a major turning point in the history of disability. The writing system of raised dots used by blind and visually impaired people was developed by Louis Braille in nineteenth-century France. In a society that did not value disabled people in general, blindness was particularly stigmatized, and lack of access to reading and writing was a significant barrier to social participation. The idea of tactile reading was not entirely new, but existing methods based on sighted systems were difficult to learn and use. As the first writing system designed for blind people’s needs, Braille was a groundbreaking new accessibility tool. It not only provided practical benefits, but also helped change the cultural status of blindness. This essay begins by discussing the situation of blind people in nineteenth-century Europe. It then describes the invention of Braille and the gradual process of its acceptance within blind education. Subsequently, it explores the wide-ranging effects of this invention on blind people’s social and cultural lives.

Write your essay introduction

The body of your essay is where you make arguments supporting your thesis, provide evidence, and develop your ideas. Its purpose is to present, interpret, and analyze the information and sources you have gathered to support your argument.

Length of the body text

The length of the body depends on the type of essay. On average, the body comprises 60–80% of your essay. For a high school essay, this could be just three paragraphs, but for a graduate school essay of 6,000 words, the body could take up 8–10 pages.

Paragraph structure

To give your essay a clear structure , it is important to organize it into paragraphs . Each paragraph should be centered around one main point or idea.

That idea is introduced in a  topic sentence . The topic sentence should generally lead on from the previous paragraph and introduce the point to be made in this paragraph. Transition words can be used to create clear connections between sentences.

After the topic sentence, present evidence such as data, examples, or quotes from relevant sources. Be sure to interpret and explain the evidence, and show how it helps develop your overall argument.

Lack of access to reading and writing put blind people at a serious disadvantage in nineteenth-century society. Text was one of the primary methods through which people engaged with culture, communicated with others, and accessed information; without a well-developed reading system that did not rely on sight, blind people were excluded from social participation (Weygand, 2009). While disabled people in general suffered from discrimination, blindness was widely viewed as the worst disability, and it was commonly believed that blind people were incapable of pursuing a profession or improving themselves through culture (Weygand, 2009). This demonstrates the importance of reading and writing to social status at the time: without access to text, it was considered impossible to fully participate in society. Blind people were excluded from the sighted world, but also entirely dependent on sighted people for information and education.

See the full essay example

The conclusion is the final paragraph of an essay. It should generally take up no more than 10–15% of the text . A strong essay conclusion :

  • Returns to your thesis
  • Ties together your main points
  • Shows why your argument matters

A great conclusion should finish with a memorable or impactful sentence that leaves the reader with a strong final impression.

What not to include in a conclusion

To make your essay’s conclusion as strong as possible, there are a few things you should avoid. The most common mistakes are:

  • Including new arguments or evidence
  • Undermining your arguments (e.g. “This is just one approach of many”)
  • Using concluding phrases like “To sum up…” or “In conclusion…”

Braille paved the way for dramatic cultural changes in the way blind people were treated and the opportunities available to them. Louis Braille’s innovation was to reimagine existing reading systems from a blind perspective, and the success of this invention required sighted teachers to adapt to their students’ reality instead of the other way around. In this sense, Braille helped drive broader social changes in the status of blindness. New accessibility tools provide practical advantages to those who need them, but they can also change the perspectives and attitudes of those who do not.

An essay is a focused piece of writing that explains, argues, describes, or narrates.

In high school, you may have to write many different types of essays to develop your writing skills.

Academic essays at college level are usually argumentative : you develop a clear thesis about your topic and make a case for your position using evidence, analysis and interpretation.

The structure of an essay is divided into an introduction that presents your topic and thesis statement , a body containing your in-depth analysis and arguments, and a conclusion wrapping up your ideas.

The structure of the body is flexible, but you should always spend some time thinking about how you can organize your essay to best serve your ideas.

Your essay introduction should include three main things, in this order:

  • An opening hook to catch the reader’s attention.
  • Relevant background information that the reader needs to know.
  • A thesis statement that presents your main point or argument.

The length of each part depends on the length and complexity of your essay .

A thesis statement is a sentence that sums up the central point of your paper or essay . Everything else you write should relate to this key idea.

The thesis statement is essential in any academic essay or research paper for two main reasons:

  • It gives your writing direction and focus.
  • It gives the reader a concise summary of your main point.

Without a clear thesis statement, an essay can end up rambling and unfocused, leaving your reader unsure of exactly what you want to say.

A topic sentence is a sentence that expresses the main point of a paragraph . Everything else in the paragraph should relate to the topic sentence.

At college level, you must properly cite your sources in all essays , research papers , and other academic texts (except exams and in-class exercises).

Add a citation whenever you quote , paraphrase , or summarize information or ideas from a source. You should also give full source details in a bibliography or reference list at the end of your text.

The exact format of your citations depends on which citation style you are instructed to use. The most common styles are APA , MLA , and Chicago .

My Mother Essay For Class 2 Kids

Key Points to Remember When Writing an Essay on ‘My Mother’ for Class 2

10-lines on ‘my mother’ for class 2, short essay on ‘my mother’ for class 2, long essay on ‘my mother’ for class 2, what your second grader will learn from the essay.

Essay writing is very important for a child as it helps them express their thoughts and feelings on the topic. If one were to talk about the tasks that perfectly allows children to combine creativity, sentence construction, and ideas into a singular concept, writing essays could be considered one of the best. In this regard, essay writing is an important skill for young kids. And what can be better than writing about one’s mother, the most special person for any child? A mother showers her child with unconditional love. She is the one the child develops the strongest bond with. Thus, writing an essay on ‘My Mother’ is not only easy but also enjoyable for children. Through this article, we can help your second grader write an excellent essay on ‘My Mother’. Let’s get started then!

Having some pointers can help children write better essays that properly convey their feelings and intentions. Here are some of them:

  • Mention your mother’s name.
  • Talk about her daily schedule and how much she means to you.
  • Make sure you use simple sentences to make the essay easy to write and understand.
  • Add some personal anecdotes to add a personal touch and express your bond with your mother.
  • You can write in small sentences to frame ideas and then join them and form your essay.

Writing a few points can help children get a clear idea of what they can elaborate on in the essay and how they want to structure it. These ten lines can help you understand how to form these ideas:

  • My mother’s name is Karuna.
  • She is a homemaker.
  • Everyone respects her and loves her.
  • I love her a lot.
  • She takes so much care of Tommy, our pet, and me.
  • She takes care of the house.
  • She cooks tasty food for us.
  • She helps me with my studies.
  • When Tommy and I are playing, she plays with us.
  • She is the best mom in the world.

Children love their mothers the most, and an essay can be the perfect way to help them express this love. Here is an example:

My mother is a very good person. She takes care of me, and she also takes care of Tommy, our pet. She cares for everyone in the house and keeps the house clean. She loves gardening and has planted many plants in our small balcony garden. Some plants have only leaves, and some plants have beautiful flowers. My mother teaches me to be kind, helpful and honest with everyone. Due to these qualities, I admire my mother a lot and am proud of her. She is definitely my role model, and I aspire to be a good human being like her when I grow up.

The bond between a mother and her child is unique, and there is no relationship like that in the world. Here is an example of a long composition on the topic:

My mother’s name is Karuna, and she is a homemaker. She is the most beautiful person in the whole world, and I love her a lot. She takes care of me and Tommy, my furry best friend. She is great at taking care of everyone in the house, and she always keeps the house clean.

She has planted many plants in the garden. Some plants have only leaves, and some plants have beautiful flowers. And because of her hobby, I have come to love them as well. Last month, I sowed a seed in a pot along with her. A tiny plant grew from that seed, and now I can understand why she loves gardening so much. I also help her water the plants.

My mother teaches me to keep my things in place and throw waste in the waste paper basket. She wakes up early and makes tiffin for my father and me. When I return from school, she surprises me with my favourite snacks. In the afternoon, she takes me to the park nearby. I play there with other kids. Sometimes, when I fall on the ground, my mother tells me that it’s alright and I am a brave child. She helps me with my homework, and all of us have our dinner together. Our day together ends when bedtime strikes, and my mother tucks me in bed and reads beautiful stories in her beautiful voice.

Weekends are always special days for my mother and me. We do fun things together. One of our favourite activities is watching Tom and Jerry. I look forward to it every week. My mother also volunteers to feed the dogs in our neighbourhood every weekend. She often tells me that we should help everyone, especially the poor and helpless animals. So, I accompany her to feed the dogs, and when I grow up, I want to continue doing what she has taught me. My mother is my role model, and I love her for being the person she is. I have made a promise to myself that when I grow up, I will become like her one day and do my best to help others.

Essay writing is an important topic that a child needs to start learning from a young age to gradually develop and become better. And writing essays on topics that are personal to them, like My Mother, My Family, My Friends, My School, etc., can help them express their feelings and thoughts in words. When writing an essay on ‘My Mother’, second graders are likely to realise the positive aspects of their mothers and learn how to pen them down. As a result, it will improve their creative thinking, communication, and articulation of thoughts.

As mentioned earlier, essays can help your child convey their feelings and intentions. Encourage your little one to write an essay on their mother using the tips and key points provided in this article and help them explore the world of writing and creative thinking along the way.

On 3rd March 2024, the Prime Minister chaired the Council of Ministers, where he talked about a plan for the next five years to work on the ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ vision.

He stated that if the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) forms a government after the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in 2024, the government will aim to make India a global power in terms of economic growth, social development, technological innovations and soft diplomacy.

The immediate objectives of the Viksit Bharat scheme are economic growth and sustainable development goals, better standard of living, ease of doing business, infrastructure, social welfare, etc.

To achieve the Viksit Bharat objectives, the Indian Prime Minister aims to enable every Indian citizen to participate in the country’s development at their own level. PM Modi’s vision is strong and sustainable, where every individual will be offered decent living standards and an opportunity to serve their mother country.

The government is encouraging investors to invest in India for advanced economic growth in the subsequent years. The sub-schemes launched under this mission show the government’s dedication to creating a favourable environment for economic growth and business development.

The government is constantly encouraging the youth to actively participate in the government’s schemes and engage in entrepreneurial activities. With schemes like Startup India, Made in India, and Digital India, more and more people are encouraged to participate in the government’s plans for India’s development.

The government is launching schemes on its digital platforms that encourage people to understand the importance of indigenous products and rely on their skills.’

Developing world-class infrastructure to promote sustainable development and an enhanced standard of living for everyone is another objective of the Viksit Bharat scheme. The government is launching large-scale projects to develop the country’s infrastructure, which includes the construction of world-class roads and highways, trains and railway stations, ports, etc. Some of the popular projects launched by the government are the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana , Smart Cities Mission, Bharatmala, Sagarmala, etc.
