Essay on A Cricket Match 500 Words in English

Below we have provided a Cricket Match Essay in English, written in easy and simple words for class 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10.

“Cricket to us was more than play; it was a worship in the summer sun.” ~ Edmund Charles Blunden

Two things have made their place in the heart of Indians forever; Shahrukh Khan (The King Khan of Bollywood) and the sport of cricket. In our country, cricket is a religion and players like Sachin Tendulkar are considered as god. This game is enjoyed by small children as well as office going adults. It never fails to amuse us. You can find people playing cricket in world-class stadiums as well as on every corner of a not so well-lit street. You can never know which side the match is going to go as nothing is sure till the last ball is bowled.

I remember being the witness to one such nail-biting finish. I’m sure that all cricket enthusiasts would still remember the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL) Finale; how all of us were glued to our television screens and were just waiting for the clock to show 7:30 pm! But I was one of the very few lucky ones who got a chance to visit the stadium in Hyderabad and watch the roller coaster of a finale in front of my own eyes.

My family and I live in Delhi, but since my father is such a cricket lover, we had made plans in advance to watch the finale. It was going to be held in Chennai initially, but because of some reasons, the venue was shifted to the city of Hyderabad. We purchased the match tickets as soon as they went online. All of the thousands of tickets that were available were sold within a record -breaking time of 2 minutes.

That is a mere 120 seconds, just think about it! But then, this is something that one can expect when the two teams playing head-on against each other were Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. The match was indeed a clash of the Titans. We landed at the Hyderabad airport and checked into our hotel. After taking a short 2- hour nap, we took a cab and set out for the stadium. There was so much traffic. It felt as if every person in the city was going to the stadium.

Our tickets were double-checked at the entry gate, and we then reached our seats. The stadium felt so lively and was full of people cheering and supporting their favourite team. I doubt if even one seat would have been empty! We were waiting for the toss to start while my father went to bring some snacks and cold drinks for my sister and me. Rohit Sharma, the captain of Mumbai Indians, won the toss and elected to bat first. We all were shouting at the top of our voices and just couldn’t wait for even one more second for the match to begin.

The match started and seemed to favour the yellow side. Mumbai Indians lost some of their crucial wickets early in the game including that of their captain for only 15 runs. Bowlers Deepak Chahar and Imran Tahir seemed to give the blue batsmen a tough time. The supporters of Mumbai Indians had suddenly turned very quiet. But then came Kieron Pollard and struck a new hope for his side. He played some brilliant shots that went literally through the roof! The blue side posted a score total of 149 runs for a loss of 8 wickets in 20 overs. It was now time for the lions of Chennai to work magic with their bat.

The batsmen of Chennai Super Kings started quite well and kept the run rate exceptionally high. But as soon as Faf du Plessis lost his wicket, things started going south for the team. No other batsmen except for Shane Watson was able to perform exceedingly well. Even our favourite helicopter shot hitter, Mahendra Singh Dhoni was run out for only two runs. At the last ball, the Chennai side needed only one run to draw the game and two runs to claim the trophy.

If not anything else, the audience was expecting at least a super over. But one should not merely expect something beforehand when a talented bowler like Lasith Malinga stands with the ball in his hand on the other side. Malinga bowled a superb delivery under so much pressure. He bowled an LBW (Leg Before Wicket) and brought the Mumbai Indians to victory.

This game with its importance is also necessary to be understood by students for exams and hence Cricket Essay for Students in English becomes an important topic in English. Here is everything regarding the Cricket Essay for Students in English via Vedantu.

Cricket is a very popular game and is played at both national and international levels. This game originated in England. Cricket was introduced to the Indians by the British in the early 1700s. This game rules in everyone’s heart in India and so it can be called the “king of the games”. Millions of fans watch this game, and there is an air of excitement everywhere. It is enjoyed by the old and young. Over the years, this game has gathered a huge fan-base, who connects emotionally with it in our country.

History of Cricket

The game of cricket goes long back to British times. When it was introduced in India, very few people played this game. The Maharaja of Patiala, Bhupinder Singh brought this game into limelight. He was a great patron of sports. He played cricket and he had his own team. Cricket was his second love after his kingdom. He was the man behind the golden history of cricket due to his passion for the game. His team Patiala XI was the best team during that time and he was the captain of the Indian team. He himself sponsored his teams for the tours to England.

How is Cricket Played?

Cricket is a game played by two teams of eleven players each on a pitch with two sets of three stumps, which are called wickets. The bowler bowls the ball down the pitch to the batsman of the opposing team, who must defend the wickets in front of which he stands. The target of the game is to score as many runs as possible.

Runs are scored by individual players by running on the playing strip (called pitch) between the wickets, or by hitting a ball that flies outside the boundary of the playground or which falls inside the boundary but bounces or rolls outside. When the balls go directly outside the boundary, the batsman scores six runs, and when the ball falls within the boundary but rolls outside then the batsman scores four runs. The opponent team will bowl and field and their objective is to take the wickets for each of the batsmen playing on the pitch.

A batsman can be dismissed in one of several ways: by the bowler hitting the wicket with the ball, which is called, bowled; by a fielder catching the ball hit by the batsman before it touches the ground and it is called caught; by the wicket-keeper or another fielder breaking the stumps while the batsman attempts a run and is therefore out of his ground. This is called stumped or run out. A batsman can also be dismissed if the batsman breaks the wicket with his own bat or body and this is called a hit wicket; by a part of the batsman’s body being hit by a ball that would otherwise have hit the wicket is called leg before the wicket or “lbw”.

A match consists of one or two innings, and each inning ends when the tenth batsman of the batting team is out, when a certain number of overs (an over: a series of six balls bowled) have been played or when the captain of the batting team declares ending the innings voluntarily.

Forms of Cricket

There are three forms of cricket: Test matches, one-day internationals, and T20 internationals.

Test matches are played for five days. To play this game, the players have to excel mentally and physically. This game is played in white tees and trousers. In this game, the players have to play for ninety overs each day.

In one-day internationals, the players play an inning of fifty overs. This kind of cricket is played only for a day. It was introduced in the 1980s.

T20 is the latest format of this game. In a T20 match, they play an inning of only twenty overs. This game is pretty interesting and engaging.

Achievements by the Indian Team

India won its first world cup in 1983 under the captaincy of Kapil Dev. It was a big win in the history of cricket. Next, they won the world cup in 2011 under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. India also won the T20 ICC World trophy and ICC Champions trophy in 2013 under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. Besides these prestigious trophies, India has acclaimed many other victories in world cricket.

Virat Kohli is the captain of the Indian cricket team (men's). We have some great players from the past who have established themselves internationally and taken India to a very high pedestal in the world of cricket and brought pride to the country. Each six, four, or wicket can bring tears to our eyes, either of joy or sadness. I still remember the world cup winning night in 2011. We were all jumping with happiness, and that six from Dhoni made us cry out of joy. I was also a batsman in a state-level team back then. Every game of cricket makes me happy, and the glee of playing or watching cricket is immeasurable. This game has taught me sportsmanship spirit and to never give up until the game is over. My favourite player is Virat Kohli. He is my inspiration and helps me to believe that we can achieve whatever we can if we are determined. He has already achieved so many things at such a young age that he is known to be one of the most incredible men who have ever played the game of cricket.

Introduction to cricket.

Cricket is a sport that brings people together. It is played with a bat and ball and has two teams with eleven players each. The game is loved by many and can be very thrilling.

The Match Begins

One exciting match I remember started with Team A winning the toss and choosing to bat first. They scored many runs, which made the game intense.

Chasing the Score

Team B had to chase a big score. They started well, with their players hitting the ball all around the field, keeping everyone on the edge of their seats.

In the last over, Team B needed few runs to win. The crowd was shouting, and the players were nervous. Finally, with one ball left, they hit a winning shot!

This match showed how exciting cricket can be. It was a great display of skill and sportsmanship, making it a memorable game for all who watched.

250 Words Essay on Exciting Cricket Match

The thrill of a cricket match.

Cricket is a game full of excitement and surprises. A match can change at any moment, keeping fans on the edge of their seats. This essay describes the excitement that unfolds during a thrilling cricket match.

Starting the Game

The match begins with the toss of a coin. The winning captain decides whether to bat or bowl first. The opening batsmen take their positions, and the bowler gets ready to deliver the first ball. The crowd watches in silence, waiting for the action to start.

Batting Excitement

When the batting team hits the ball well, the excitement builds. A well-played shot that races to the boundary for four runs, or even better, a six that flies over the boundary, can make the crowd cheer loudly. The skill of the batsmen in scoring runs quickly is thrilling to watch.

Bowling and Fielding Drama

The bowling team has its own moments of glory. A fast bowler taking a wicket with a speedy ball or a spinner tricking the batsman can change the game’s pace. Sharp fielding, with incredible catches or quick run-outs, adds to the drama.

The Final Overs

As the game nears the end, tension rises. If the scores are close, each ball becomes critical. The batting team tries to hit every ball, while the bowlers aim for accuracy to prevent runs. The excitement peaks as the match reaches its final moments, with fans cheering for their team to win.

Cricket matches are unpredictable and full of suspense. Each game is a new story, with heroes and moments that fans remember for years. This is why cricket is not just a sport but a thrilling experience for everyone who watches it.

500 Words Essay on Exciting Cricket Match

Cricket is a game full of suspense and surprises, where two teams fight with bat and ball to win the match. An exciting cricket match not only entertains the crowd but also keeps them on the edge of their seats until the last ball is bowled.

The match begins with a coin toss to decide which team will bat or field first. As the players take their positions on the field, the excitement in the air is palpable. The opening batsmen from the batting team walk onto the pitch, ready to face the bowlers from the opposing team. The crowd cheers, and the game kicks off.

The Batting Team’s Effort

The batting team’s goal is to score as many runs as possible. They hit the ball around the field, running between the wickets to add to their total. Sometimes the ball flies over the boundary for a six, and other times it rolls across for a four, each hit increasing the excitement among the spectators. The partnership between the batsmen can be crucial, and a good pair can change the course of the game.

The Bowling Team’s Response

The bowling team tries to limit the runs and take wickets. A bowler with good skills can make the ball swing in the air or spin off the ground, tricking the batsman into making a mistake. When a wicket falls, the crowd erupts, whether it’s a fast bowler knocking over the stumps or a spinner getting the batsman caught out. The fielders also play a key role, diving to stop the ball and throwing it back to the wickets to prevent runs or get a run-out.

The most thrilling part of a cricket match is often the ending. If the game is close, each ball can make a difference between winning and losing. The last few overs can be nail-biting, with the batting team trying to hit big shots to reach their target and the bowling team doing everything to stop them. The atmosphere is electric, and every run scored or wicket taken can swing the match in either team’s favor.

Victory and Celebration

When the winning runs are scored or the final wicket is taken, the victory is celebrated with joy and excitement. The winning team’s players hug each other, and the crowd cheers loudly. The players shake hands with their opponents, showing respect for each other’s efforts. There is a sense of achievement for the winning side and a feeling of what could have been for the losing team.

An exciting cricket match is a blend of strategy, skill, and sometimes luck. It brings people together, providing a spectacle of competition and sportsmanship. Whether you are a fan of the batting or the bowling team, the thrill of the game is what keeps you watching. For a school-going student or a seasoned fan, the charm of cricket lies in these moments of excitement that make it more than just a game.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

Introduction

Cricket is a popular sport played throughout the globe. It was invented in the late 16 th century in England and since then has gained popularity with today over 2 billion fans spread across the globe. The game is played with very few types of equipment over a rectangular piece of land.

How is Cricket Played

The game of cricket is played with a ball and a bat. It is played between two teams having 11 players each. The teams take their turn to subsequently bat and ball. The team that chose to bat sends its two players (batsmen) to the field while the remaining waits for their turn, outside the field. The bowler of the opposite team bowls to hit the wicket, while the batsman hits the ball to score runs. The rest 10 players of the bowling team occupy the field. When the first inning gets over, the bowling team takes to batting and the batting team takes to field.

Some Important Rules

The rules of the game of cricket are specified in a code called the Laws of Cricket. There are 42 laws known to be drafted as early as 1744 and is presently maintained by the Marylebone Cricket Club in London. In the center of the field, there should be a rectangular pitch measuring 22 yards from wicket to wicket. Every over in cricket has six ball deliveries. After every over, the bowlers are rotated. Batsmen score runs until they are bowled and send off the field.

Cricket is an extremely popular game played throughout the globe. Played with simple equipment it has a definite set of rules yet the sheer talent of the players and fast-changing scenarios during the game’s progress have made it immensely popular.

Essay 2 (400 Words) – History of Cricket and Cricket Team

The game of cricket has become increasingly popular since its evolution centuries ago. The game is supposed to be originated in England during the 16th century and has since then spread to other parts of the world making it the second most popular sport after football.

History of Cricket

The earliest documented reference to the cricket was made during a legal case trial at Guildford, Surrey, England on 27 th January 1598.

Contesting over a piece of land, John Derrick, who was a coroner by profession, testified that he used to play cricket on that piece of land with his mates, almost 50 years back. Obviously, he didn’t invent the game and it was probably being played before that time.

Amid all the uncertainty regarding the origin of cricket, one thing is certain that it was originated before 1550, probably played by the children in south-east England.

Initially, during the late 16th-century cricket was played by the children over a piece of land cleared by cattle grazing. In the coming century, it became popular and was now also played by adults.

The earliest known proper match was held at Circa, England in 1611. Evidence is also found to substantiate that in the next 11 years at least 30 matches were played between recognized teams.

With the invention of the newspaper industry, cricket gained more popularity during the 18 th century. Gradually, the players started getting popular and became huge crowd pullers. Today, the popularity of cricket has reached its pinnacle with over 2.5 billion fans throughout the world.

Teams around the World

As of August 2022, there are 108 ICC members including 12 full members and 96 associate members.

All full member nations are qualified to play ODIs (One Day International) and the Twenty20. The 12 full member countries, in the increasing order of their year of membership, are – South Africa (1909), England (1909), Australia (1909), West Indies (1926), New Zealand (1926), India (1926), Pakistan (1952), Sri Lanka (1981), Zimbabwe (1992), Bangladesh (2000), Afghanistan (2017) and Ireland (2017).

Associate members, a group of 96 countries are eligible to play ICC World Cricket League. However, there are certain prerequisites for a country to qualify as an associate member. Firstly it must have at least 16 senior and 16 junior teams and secondly, it must have an access to at least 8 cricket grounds with 4 of them as permanent pitch.

Beginning as a ball and stick game played by the village children in England, some five centuries ago; cricket has progressed immensely in popularity. Though the rules and techniques of the game have evolved over years, the basic form of the game has stood the test of time and remains mostly unaltered.

6 Best Essays on “A Cricket Match”

Essay No. 01

Last year we played a match which I will long to remember. It was played at the invitation of famous Cantonment Cricket Eleven.

We reached the Cantonment Club. George, the skipper of the other teams shook hands with our captain. He led the party to the field. Our captain lost the toss. We then our positions in the field. Near the stumps lay the red ball.

The batting began. The stout long man came in to bat. He played for a few minutes only and was then caught. One wicket was down with no runs! We were all so excited. Was the opposite team going to be defeated so easily? Presently the second batsman appeared. His very first stroke showed him a skilled player. His batting was firm and swift. He began piling up runs. We did not lose heart. We changed our bowlers, alternating fast one with slow ones. At last, our best bowler, Raj came forward. With his second ball, he took the batsman by surprise. Before the batsman could strike the ball, it had cleanly struck one of the stumps.

The batting continued, but no other player of the opposite team played so well as the second. They paled a good game but our bowlers proved too strong for them. The sixth batsman seemed to be in good form. He added considerably to the score.  The Cantonment team were all out by lunch hour. The score stood at 207.

Lunch being over, the referee gave a whistle. The players stood in the field again. Now our side went in to bat. Our first batsman made a poor start a poor start. After cutting a fastball or two he seemed to lose his grip on the bat. He could not score many runs. Our two wickets fell in quick succession. Cricket is a game of chance. So we thought it was too early to lose hope. As Ramesh, one of our best batsmen, went forward, we hoped he would recover lost ground. He started well and brought the score to 50, but then a fastball struck him on the face. He was carried away unconscious from the fields.

After a brief interruption the game was resumed, and our side went on batting, raising the score shanty our eighth batsman proved the hero of the day. With great confidence, he hit back every ball for the full two hours. He scored a century and twenty runs. Our score had already exceeded that of the opposite team. Before the stumps were drawn our captain declared at 375. The last man was not out.

I am the Captain of my school cricket team. Our school arranged a learned coach a few months ago to groom our team in the art of Playing. Accordingly. I can boast with humility that our team is quite prepared to match any other cricket team in this area of our State.

Lest anybody should deem my assertion an empty boast, I here describe a match which our team played with a rival team recently.

It is a matter of just Sunday last. I had invited the team of the local government school to play a friendly match with our school team. The match was played in our school playground. Our team won the toss. We decided to bat first. All the players on both sides and the umpires and the referee took up their positions.

The referee blew the whistle and the match started. Our openers Punk and Amit reached the pitch with beaming faces. As the first ball was thrown by the bowler, Praveen, Punit sent the ball swirling towards the boundary. Clearly, it was a fourer. The playground which was packed to capacity, resounded with applause.

In this way, Punit amassed thirty six runs. There was suddenly a note of dismay when he was caught out by Keshev of the rival team. Amit , however, continued. He played slowly and continuously. He scored 29 runs before he was bowled out.

Before lunch our team had scored 202 runs in all in 40 overs. After lunch, the rival team started batting. Our team realized that the rival team was not that weak as we had thought them to be. Soon, they scored 53 runs.

My mates began to show the signs of getting unnerved. But I bucked them up. I also brushed up on fielding by changing the players. Suddenly, our crack bowler, Sandeep, showed his mettle when he felled down four wickets in quick succession.

The rival team crashed like a house of cards and finished at 172 in 37 overs. We won the match. All the team members hugged one another. There was rejoicing all around as the place hummed with the slogans ! “Hurrah !” “Hurrah !”

Suddenly, there was much excitement amongst the players. The umpire whistled and the captains of both the teams reached the center of the ground. A spin of the coin decided the toss. Our team won the toss and our opponents held the field.

The game started at 8.10 A.M. As soon as the match started there was much clapping and cheers. The two players moved forward to initiate the game. They played well. It appeared that both of them were confident of their success. They were very fine batsmen. They were able to score fifty runs. Suddenly, one of them was caught out. After that another player of our team moved forward. He played well and gave a good account of himself. He easily raised our score to 110 before he was bowled out. As soon as the score was announced, there was wide cheering, whistling and clapping.

The captain of our team moved forward. He was a great player who had won many medals and merit certificates in cricket. He played so well that he was able to raise the score to 199. There was loud cheering as he was still unfatigued and untired. Thus our score went on mounting and it reached 212 when the lunch hour arrived and both the teams retired for taking lunch.

After the lunch, the game started again. Our opponents started playing. The first two players played astoundingly well and they scored 79 runs, but unfortunately the other players did not play well. Their score stood at 154. The team lost control over the game. The wickets began to fall speedily one after the other. The next player was soon bowled out. We witnessed the match eagerly as the time was drawing to a close. But the last player of the opponent team maintained the balance and raised their score to 170. The game was so well played that we felt that we could not easily have a win over the opposite team. We were doubtful of our victory. There were clappings all around and their score stood at 180 when their last player was caught out. Every face was beaming with joy. Now there was no hope of scoring any further run. The opponent team lost the game.

The time was over. There was wide clapping and cheering. The captain of our team was picked up by the youth of the college on their shoulders. To our greet joy, our team had won the match. But there was so much excitement and wonder that I could not hear any voice at all afterwards. The deafening voice of the onlookers stunned us and we were feeling an indescribable pleasure.

It was a red-letter day in the history of our College, as our team had won the match that was a closely contested one. Matches are always played amongst different teams of educational institutions, but I never witnessed so much excitement and a spate of joy in my life as I did on this occasion.

The next batsman who lost his wicket was the newcomer. They lost two wickets for fifty-two. Raman, our spinner, was brought not a bowl. He checked the score with his accurate line and length. Nikhil bowled superbly. He dismissed two batsmen for ten runs. Now the score was 88 for four. Their fifth-wicket partnership was worth 60 runs. The score reached 148 when one more batsman was declared run out. The score soon reached 200 for five in thirty-two overs. At this stage is looked as if we would lose the match. Essex' s Nick Browne scored his first County Championship century for over a year and Callum Parkinson collected his maiden five-wicket haul for Durham , but the weather-affected match at the Riverside ended in a draw.
