Degree Information

The primary aim of our PhD in counseling program is to mentor a diverse body of doctoral students who sense a calling to extend their foundational knowledge on ethical and effective counseling, counselor education, and supervision through the dissemination of research and scholarship. Graduates can be prepared to influence the counseling field in leadership positions within clinical settings, higher education, and counseling associations.

• This program is intensives-based with a 3-credit hour practicum , 9-credit hour internship, and 9-credit hour dissertation .
• Core courses and electives (36 credits) have a 1-week intensive portion to ensure that students develop mentoring relationships with faculty and meaningful relationships with peers in the program. Admission Requirements for Our PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision

Admission requirements.

• A non-refundable, non-transferable $50 application fee will be posted on the current application upon enrollment (waived for qualifying service members, veterans, and military spouses – documentation verifying military status is required) .
• Send official college transcripts (mailed as sealed, unopened copies or sent via a direct electronic transcript system). A regionally or nationally accredited master’s degree that reveals evidence of fulfilling CACREP entry-level standards (our current prerequisite courses) with a minimum of 3.25 GPA is required for admission in good standing.
• A  Ph.D. graduate status record  form.
• Two recommendations  from professionals familiar with the applicant’s work and character.
• A 300-word letter of intent.
• Professional Vita – Must indicate counseling licensure or a minimum of one year of clinical experience in the counseling field with a commitment to obtain counseling licensure prior to graduation from the program.
• Case Vignette: An APA-formatted research paper of 3-5 pages length (not including title page, abstract, and references). The university provides applicants with the paper’s topic. Applicants will choose between a  Case Vignette for School Counseling Applicants  or  Case Vignette for Clinical Counseling Applicants .
• Selected applicants may be required to participate in a personal interview with core Ph.D. program faculty.
• Applicants whose native language is other than English must submit official scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or an approved alternative assessment. For information on alternative assessments or TOEFL waivers, please call Admissions or view the official International Admissions policy .

Preliminary Acceptance

If you are sending in a preliminary transcript for acceptance, you must:

• Be in your final term and planning to start your doctoral degree after the last day of class for your master’s degree.
• Complete a Master’s Self-Certification Form confirming your completion date. You may download the form from the Forms and Downloads page or contact an admissions counselor to submit the form on your behalf.
• Submit an official transcript to confirm that you are in your final term. The preliminary transcript must show that you are within 6 credit hours of completion for a 30-48 credit hour master’s degree or within 9 credit hours of completion for a 49+ credit hour master’s degree.
• Send in an additional, final official transcript with a conferral date on it by the end of your first semester of enrollment in the new doctoral degree.

Getting Started - What to Know Before You Apply

• To complete the CES PhD program, full-time students often take two years of coursework (including one online synchronous course each summer), two semesters of doctoral internship, and successfully complete their comprehensive exams prior to moving on to a Dissertation.
• Advanced Counseling Practicum and our two Supervision courses are completed on the Kent campus at the  Counseling Center in White Hall.
• A doctoral residency plan is established with co-advisors which includes one year of full-time study, that is, enrollment for a 12 month period including 21 semester hours (e.g., two semesters of 9hrs plus a summer of 3hrs) and additional professional development activities related to the five core areas of CES
• Applicants should have a master’s degree in counseling , preferably from a CACREP accredited program. Applicants without a master’s degree in counseling should consider our  EdS Program . Our application deadline for all materials is February 1st of each year for applicants to start the following Fall semester.

The mission of the Counselor Education and Supervision (CES) doctoral program at Kent State University is to prepare research-informed, ethically sound, and culturally intentional counselor educators and supervisors who can effectively: conduct research and engage in scholarship; provide counseling supervision; facilitate learning; engage in leadership and advocacy; and deliver counseling services. Before taking any field-based experiences, students must complete state and Federal background checks. See the program coordinator for more information.

Students will complete 3 credit hours of CES 88292 per semester for two consecutive semesters, for a total of 6 credit hours of internship.

Elective courses must be relevant to counselor education and supervision. Students must consult with and obtain approval from their advisors about registering for electives.

Upon admission to candidacy, each doctoral candidate must register for CES 80199 . It is expected that a doctoral candidate will continuously register for Dissertation I for a total of 30 credit hours, and thereafter CES 80299 , each semester until all requirements for the degree have been met. Students will be expected to be familiar with data entry and interpreting computer generated analysis.

Students who earn a C+ grade or lower in any course for the degree must repeat the course for a better grade. All prerequisites for courses must be completed with a minimum minimum B- grade.

• After admission to the Ph.D. degree program, students plan a program of study with their respective faculty advisory committee. Please refer to the program doctoral handbook and graduate student handbook for more information about requirements for graduation.
• Successful completion of written and oral comprehensive exams is required before students can be registered for dissertation credit hours.

Additional Information & Resources

The intent of the comprehensive written and oral examination is to provide a more comprehensive evaluation of the student’s knowledge of Counselor Education and Supervision than can be completed in an individual course. The comprehensive written and oral examination is centered on the 5 core areas of CES. The comprehensive written and oral examination is to be taken at the completion of the student’s course work (CES 88292 Internship in CES may be incomplete at the time of the comprehensive examination); that is, all course work listed as part of the Prospectus & Residency Plan must be completed before the student is eligible to take the comprehensive written and oral examination EXCEPT ELECTIVES .

There are five core areas of the CES Doctoral Comprehensive Examinations which include:

• Supervision
• Leadership and Advocacy
• Research and Scholarship

The written comprehensive examination will be offered SIX times during the academic year (Fall semester: September 1, October 1, November 1 and Spring semester: February 1, March 1 and April 1).

In the CES Ph.D. program, students complete the written portion of the comprehensive examination in five weeks . At the student’s request, the two CES faculty co-advisors help prepare the student for the five areas to be covered on the written portion of the examination; note that it is the student’s responsibility to schedule a meeting(s) with co-advisors to assist with preparation.

Once the written portion of the examination has been completed, the Advisory Committee (CES co-advisors) may determine that the student 1) has successfully passed the written examination and is ready for the oral examination, or 2) determine that there is a deficiency, and that re-writing is necessary. The Advisory Committee (CES co-advisors) must indicate a satisfactory performance on the “written portion” of the examination before the student can schedule the “oral portion” of the examination.

Once a doctoral student receives the five questions for the CES written comprehensive exam, this is considered the first administration . Students have TWO opportunities to pass the written comprehensive exam per the EHHS Graduate Student Handbook. This CACREP accredited, the Ph.D. in Counselor Education & Supervision program prepares graduates to acquire faculty positions and assume leadership positions in mental health and school settings. Students receive intense training in counseling, teaching, supervision, research, and advocacy. Classes are held during weeknights and some weekends. The coursework is completed within two-and-half-years.

Strengths of the 60-credit Ph.D. Counselor Education & Supervision program include:

CACREP Accredidation: The Ph.D. Counselor Education & Supervision program accredited by the Council for Accreditation for Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), which means that the program has a nationally recognized and rigorous curriculum. Programs that receive CACREP accreditation have demonstrated a commitment to high admissions, academic and fieldwork standards and current best practices in counselor preparation and program improvement. Counselor preparation programs that are accredited by CACREP must hire faculty who have earned a doctoral degree in counselor education and supervision, preferably from a CACREP-accredited program. This has increased the marketability of graduates of CACREP accredited doctoral programs. Counseling psychology or clinical psychology graduates are generally not eligible for counselor education faculty positions

Graduate Assistantship (GA) Positions: Some full- and part-time graduate assistant positions are available

Success of Graduates: Graduates have been very successful in obtaining faculty and leadership positions in the region and nationally

Executive Model: Courses are held during weeknights and Saturdays, which permits for employment, and many of the students maintain full-time employment

Time to Degree: The coursework is completed within two-and-a-half (2.5) years. Some students have earned their degree within three years. The curriculum involves 9 credits during the fall and spring semesters and 6 credits during the summer semesters

Faculty: The faculty members have considerable professional experience and are active within the profession as scholars, supervisors, counselors, and consultants. The faculty members have extensive relationships with the community agencies, universities, and schools in the Pittsburgh area

How to apply, phd in counselor education and supervision admission requirements.

Applicants must provide the following information for  admission  to Capella programs and specializations:

• A master’s degree from an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, or from an internationally recognized institution
• Completion of a CACREP-accredited curriculum equivalent master's degree program 
• Your official master’s transcripts, with a minimum grade point average of 3.25 or higher on a 4.0 scale
• A valid, government-issued form of photo identification
• 2 Letters of recommendation completed by supervisor, faculty member and professional colleague
• An extended goal statement and writing sample. Your Resume or curriculum vitae (CV)

GRE and GMAT are not required for admission.

Mercer University’s Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Counselor Education and Supervision will challenge and prepare you for roles as counselor advocate, counselor supervisor, counselor educator, and researcher, as well as being an advanced counseling practitioner.

Choose a focus in the counselor education and supervision program

As a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision student at Mercer, you will develop the knowledge and skills you need to become an advanced counselor, supervisor, and advocate. Through your counselor education studies, you will learn to teach and evaluate graduate-level students in counselor education programs.

Through the Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision program you will develop both your practitioner and supervisory skills through five areas of study:

You will also earn the Mercer University Certificate in Online Course Design and Delivery, which consists of training to utilize technology while teaching both in person and online.

A counselor education program for busy and working adults

Mercer’s CACREP accredited Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision program enrolls students each August, and classes meet one evening per week per course on the Atlanta campus. You will be immersed in diverse settings in the classroom and beyond in the city of Atlanta.

As a counselor education and supervision student, you will complete two 16-week terms during the fall and spring semesters, and one eight-week term during the summer session. Students must attend classes full time for the first 30 hours of the program to establish residency. During this period, you will form your research agenda and collaborate with faculty on research, supervision, teaching, and developing external funding. Full-time status involves enrolling in three courses, or completing 9 credit hours per semester.

Graduate teaching assistantships or graduate research assistantships may be available for eligible students. After establishing residency, you may choose to attend part time to complete your fieldwork or participate in other counseling opportunities. Most students complete the coursework, internship, and dissertation in three to five years.

Founded in 2014, the Center for the Study of Narrative uses principles of narrative theory and therapy to discover and learn from stories from a variety of disciplines and perspectives. The Center uses this knowledge to improve ways to help others. Students and faculty work collaboratively to conduct narrative-based research, engage in service learning, and pursue study abroad courses.

Online PhD programs in counselor education and supervision teach students how to become educators and leaders in the counseling profession. Through a blend of didactic learning and hands-on experiences, graduates of these programs will be able to educate and lead new counselors and counselor students; they will also gain an advanced understanding of clinical counseling practice.

Online PhD programs in counseling education and supervision will vary in length, based on each individual student’s pace of progress. Some students finish their PhD in 3.5 years, others take seven years or longer. Generally speaking, these programs include several core courses, a dissertation, internship, and practicum. While much of an online PhD program can be completed remotely, there may be some face-to-face components, either at the program’s physical campus or in a student’s home area.

Online PhD programs in counselor education and supervision usually require applicants to have a master’s degree from an institution accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). Most programs also ask their applicants to already be licensed professional counselors. PhD programs themselves should be accredited, too: CACREP accreditation is always preferred, but some programs with regional accreditation may suffice if their curricula align with CACREP standards.

The University of the Cumberlands offers an online PhD in counselor education and supervision covers three main domains: leadership, professional research, and clinical coursework. Students may also choose to add a specialization in addiction or advanced counseling. As an institution grounded in Christian principles, the University of Cumberland puts an emphasis on strong ethical values for its students.

The curriculum includes courses such as advanced counseling theories and skills; neuroanatomy and behavioral medicine for professional counseling; leadership and advocacy in professional counseling; and theories and techniques of clinical supervision. The PhD in Counselor Education Program is intended to enable qualifying master’s level counselors to extend their career opportunities. It is designed to facilitate the developing of requisite competencies for careers in academic and professional service settings. Coursework and research requirements prepare graduates to seek for faculty positions in graduate-level counselor education programs and as educators, researchers, supervisors, and consultants in government, education, and community agency/school settings. The program is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).

Students generally enter the PhD program having earned a master’s degree in counseling, developed their counseling skills, and attained licensure as a professional counselor. The PhD program prepares students to demonstrate proficiency in research, counseling theory and practice, teaching, supervision, consultation, leadership, advocacy, and diversity studies beyond the requirements of master’s level counselors. Doctoral students work toward articulating a theory of professional counseling; engaging in counseling supervision, teaching, and consultation; and developing an understanding of the variety of social-ecological factors that advance individuals’ mental health adjustment. The PhD program prepares students as counselor educators. It is not a psychology program and does not prepare students for licensure as a psychologist.

Application and Admissions

Admission to the program is based on scholarship, academic background, work experience, letters of reference, an optional writing sample, a statement of intent, and culturally diverse experience (the Counselor Education program no longer requires submission of GRE scores). Final decision on an applicant is made following an interview with faculty members. Students are accepted to begin fall semester only. Deadline for applications is December 15; only complete applications will be reviewed. Applicants invited to interview are encouraged to meet faculty in person on campus; interviewees outside New Mexico may request a video interview. Applicants will be notified by February 15 of acceptance decisions. Potential students must accept or decline by March 15. Admission to the Ph.D. program in no way guarantees placements (e.g., practica, internship), licensure, and/or employment. Additionally, fingerprinting and background checks may be required.

Counseling - Ph.D.

The hybrid online Counseling Ph.D. prepares students to work as advanced practitioners, counselor educators, and supervisors in clinical and academic settings. As a CACREP accredited program, the Counseling Ph.D. prepares graduates to be leaders and advocates for change in the professional counseling field. The Counseling Ph.D. degree emphasizes student contributions to counselor education through research while understanding and addressing the needs of today's communities. Students can work full-time during the program in order to continue to provide meaningful professional counseling services to the communities in which they live and work. Face-to-face classes occur only twice each quarter on a Friday through Saturday in the OSU Portland Center. Approximately 12 students are admitted each year into a cohort.

The OSU Ph.D. in Counseling degree is part-time, and financial support such as loans and grants are more limited than for full-time programs. There are no teaching or research assistantships since these require full-time enrollment.

• Attend a high quality online program with a long history of delivering remote education, having offered graduate courses via Extended Campus since 1944 and full graduate degrees via Extended Campus since 1976. The Oregon State University counseling programs are the second oldest in the world, with counseling classes first offered in 1917. The Counseling program at Oregon State University was one of the very first CACREP-accredited programs.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

What to expect, how long does it take to complete the program.

Coursework is typically completed after two full years of part-time attendance. The remaining 7 credits of internship (630 hours) and 36 credits of dissertation take anywhere from 1 to 3 additional years. The median completion time is 48 months.

What are the admission requirements?

The minimum requirements for the Doctoral degree are a Master of Counseling or closely related field with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Academic background, personal and emotional suitability, volunteer or paid experience in the helping professions, and the educational and professional goals of each candidate are evaluated before admission is granted. Screening includes, but is not limited to, three letters of recommendation, one of which must come from a current or recent clinical supervisor, and a writing sample. A personal interview is required for those applicants who meet the initial application criteria.

Is the GRE required?

We do not require the GRE for admission into our program. We believe that there are many other criteria that will reflect if a candidate is a fit for the program including past academic work, professional and volunteer experience.

When does the program begin?

A new cohort enters the Doctoral degree program starts every summer quarter. 

Can international students apply?

Note: International students are not eligible to apply. Due to the hybrid nature of this program (in person and online), international students are unable to obtain an appropriate educational visa. For more information contact  International Admissions .

How many credits does it take to graduate?

The Doctoral program is 150 credits (including Master’s transfer credits).

Clinical Mental Health Counseling - MCoun

The OSU Ecampus Clinical Mental Health Counseling master’s degree meets the educational requirements for licensure as a counselor in Oregon (LPC), Washington (LMHC), and in many U.S. states. Graduates are also eligible to become board certified counselors by the National Board of Certified Counselors. To determine whether this program meets licensure requirements in your state of residence, you must contact the appropriate licensing board(s).

School Counseling - MCoun

The hybrid online Counseling Master's program prepares students to work as school counselors in Oregon and beyond. As a CACREP accredited program, the OSU School Counseling master’s degree aims to prepare graduates to be leaders and advocates for change in their schools and communities. Students can work full-time during this part-time program. Face-to-face classes occur only twice each quarter on a Friday through Saturday in beautiful Corvallis, OR. Approximately 24 students are admitted each year into a cohort.

• Minimum credits: 96 graduate credits, including doctoral-level internships; some of the credits can be transferred from previous programs (up to 30 credits for PhDs; up to 36 credits for EdDs).
• Curriculum: Coursework reflects emerging knowledge about the impact of early life experiences, the effects of chronic stress, clinical supervision, the biological basis of behavior, and the importance of employing an integrated diversity of approaches to psychotherapy.

• Internship opportunities:  Internships are available in an array of settings, including mental health clinics, healthcare facilities and hospitals, human services agencies, drug and alcohol treatment facilities and higher education settings. • Flexible: Programs can be completed on a full-time or part-time basis, starting in any semester; minimum one year full-time residency requirement for PhD students only.

• Successful completion of a master’s degree in mental health counseling, school counseling, or a related field in the helping professions (e.g., social work, counseling psychology, creative arts therapy).***
• At least two years of relevant practice experience in a counseling-related profession.

What's the difference between an EdD and PhD?

PhD in Education with Concentration in Counseling and Counselor Education

Prepares graduates for academic positions in universities and other higher education settings, as well as research positions in government agencies or other educational organizations. Coursework for the PhD in education (with specialization in counseling and counselor education) . 

EdD with Specialization in Counseling

Prepares and supports experienced counselors for leadership positions in their field, as well as selected higher education faculty positions; can be completed on a part-time basis while maintaining full-time employment. 

• EdD in Counseling and Human Development:   Two options are available for the dissertation phase to suit your needs. Choose between our  accelerated EdD option , featuring a highly structured, faculty-supported, and cohort-based approach that can be completed in as little as three years, or the  traditional EdD option  for more flexibility in dissertation methodology and pace, typically taking longer to complete. 
• EdD in Mental Health Counseling : Offers the option of including additional coursework, beyond the 96 credits required for the doctoral degree, that allows matriculated students to become eligible for the New York State mental health counseling license.  Students graduating from this program would be eligible for a New York State limited permit, and would need to complete 3,000 post-graduation supervised practice hours and pass the state examination to become a fully Licensed Mental Health Counselor. The need for mental health counselors is projected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations nationwide due in part to the fact that health insurance plans have started providing coverage to mental health counseling services.

Welcome to the Ph.D. program in Counselor Education at SHSU! Here is who we are:

• CACREP accredited to prepare graduates as counselor educators in graduate programs.
• Students can receive special training to be leaders in school counseling programs.
• Our cohort model supports our students to achieve a higher graduation rate than the national average.
• Doctoral students conduct and complete a major research study, called the dissertation, that is related to counseling and that reflect students’ research interests.
• Develop advanced counseling skills and supervision skills at our counseling clinics located at The Woodlands Center and the main campus in Huntsville.
• Highly dedicated faculty teaching face-to-face and online courses at both the main campus and The Woodlands Center.
• Courses structured to accommodate students who work full time.

Program Components

Cohort model.

The Ph.D. Counselor Education program follows a cohort (group) model, in which students take all core classes with the same group of colleagues throughout the program. Doctoral students feel a strong sense of support from cohort colleagues and completion rates are higher for cohort members.

In a typical semester, doctoral students enroll for 6 semester hours or 2 courses. Students have the option of taking 9 semester hours or 3 courses a semester. In order to keep pace with the cohort and make progress in the course sequence, students are expected to take the minimum required 6 semester hours.

Comprehensive Exam

After 6-8 semesters of coursework, students take a comprehensive written examination. In addition to synthesizing course information, students demonstrate competencies in research tools.

Dissertation

Upon completing coursework, a dissertation is required to obtain a doctoral degree. A dissertation is an individual, independent research study that a student conducts under the guidance of a Dissertation Advisor and a committee of two other professors who are familiar with the topic or method of study.
