How to Choose a Great Presentation Topic in 5 Steps

120 presentation topic ideas, 5 presentation tips.

How to Choose a Great Presentation Topic. Be novel. Begin with the end in mind.

4. Choose an appropriate presentation style.

There are many ways to present a topic. Your personality, the topic at hand, and your audience’s personas will help you determine which style would best fit you and your audience.

Select a presentation style that will communicate the main idea clearly and have a lasting impact on your audience.

For instance, explore a freeform style presenter by Sir Ken Robinson.

5. Engage with your audience.

Work on your presentation skills to make a strong connection with your audience, get through to them and leave a mark.

Think of the presenter as the link between the topic and the audience. A strong or a weak presenter can make a difference between a presentation being a thriving success or a boring failure.

Hone your skills by engaging and interacting with your audience. Make them feel like a part of the presentation and not just spectators. 70% of marketers have found presentations with interactive content to be more effective than those without.

Here are a few ways you can make your presentation interactive:

  • Start your speech with uncommon questions to your audience. Involve them from the get-go, like ask to raise their hands if X.
  • Make eye contact to build credibility and show confidence. Don’t stare at your slides or notes. Smile occasionally and talk to the audience directly.
  • Have an active and confident body language. Don’t stand in the same place the entire time. Move around the stage.
  • Don’t be monotonous. Speak as you would to a colleague — with enthusiasm.
  • Ask close-ended questions in between to keep the audience engaged without losing time. Address them using their names to keep things interesting.
  • Share personal experiences and stories that your audience will find fascinating and relatable.
  • Practice thoroughly before you present so you’re fluent with the material and delivery.
  • Energy and excitement can be quite contagious. Make sure you exude enough to spread some to your audience.

Feeling Inspired Yet?

Now you have all the right ingredients for choosing amazing topics and a hundred ideas to drive inspiration from. So, go ahead and start cooking presentations that will blow your audience away.

Don’t forget to choose a super-relevant topic and add meaty information. Do it with excitement to make it enjoyable for you and your audience. Best of luck!

If you’re looking for good topics for presentations, you’ve landed on the right page. In this article, you’ll find plenty of good presentation topics, tips on choosing the most suitable topic for you, and essential design elements to make your presentation a success.

Many factors go into an excellent presentation. You need to have confident body language and engage your audience to hold their attention. You also need eye-catching visual aids like images, data visualizations, GIFs, and others (all of which you can find in Prezi ), not to mention a great opening to grab attention and a strong closing line to stay memorable. However, the most essential aspect of your presentation is the topic. It’s the core of your presentation, so it has to be strong, insightful, attention-grabbing, and appealing to yourself and your audience in order to evolve into a successful presentation everyone will love.

How to choose a good presentation topic

There are millions of topics you could create a presentation on, but what defines a good topic? If you’re struggling to either come up with a good topic for a presentation or you can’t decide between multiple ones, here are a few questions you should ask yourself before choosing a topic.

What’s the goal of your presentation?

When you’re choosing a topic, consider the meaning behind it. Ask yourself what the purpose of talking about this topic is, and what you want to say about it. Whatever topic you choose to present, the conclusion needs to provide a takeaway or lesson you want to communicate to your audience. A meaningful goal will make your presentation more memorable.

Are you interested in the topic?

If you’re not interested in the topic, others won’t be curious either. Interest, enthusiasm, and passion enrich your presentation and are noticeable when presenting. Interest shines through and inspires others to find the topic as fascinating as you do. Think about the last time you saw someone sharing something they were passionate about – their excitement drew people in to pay closer attention to what they were saying.

When choosing a topic, you need to find it or a particular angle of it interesting for yourself. For example, perhaps you’re not a pop music enthusiast, but you’re passionate about studying cultural phenomena. In this case, you can talk about pop music’s influence on early 2000s youth culture.

Will your audience find this topic relatable?

While you have to find the topic you’re presenting interesting, you also have to think about your audience. When choosing a subject, consider your audience’s background in terms of demographics, interests, culture, and knowledge level about the topic. Think about what others will find fascinating and relevant, so they’re not bored or confused during your presentation.

Do you have prior experience or knowledge about this topic?

Personal experiences are always great to share in a presentation, providing your unique perspective for anyone listening. While you can easily prepare your presentation based on a quick Google search, it won’t make the same lasting impact on your audience. Choose a topic you have some prior knowledge about, or have an interesting opinion you can share with others. It’ll make your presentation more engaging and memorable.

How to create a good presentation

If you know what you want to present on, it’s time to create an impactful presentation that grabs everyone’s attention. Presentation design plays a crucial role in how your presentation is received and remembered. To stand out and leave a memorable impact on your audience, create a Prezi presentation. Instead of a linear, slide-based presentation, offer an engaging and dynamic storytelling experience to your audience. Breathe life into your presentation with motion, zoom, and spatial relationships. When creating your presentation, consider the following three essential elements:

Visuals play a significant part in presentation design. They evoke emotions, make a memorable impact, and give more context to the story. Not to mention, 65% of people are visual learners , so visual aids are helpful when explaining a complex topic.

In your presentation, include different types of visuals, such as images, videos, GIFs, and stickers, all of which you can find in Prezi’s content library. When selecting your visuals, consider what’s relevant and brings additional value to the story. Only add what’s meaningful and necessary. A video or image at the right place and time will enrich the viewing experience and make your presentation more memorable.

The layout of your presentation is the structure of your story. It’ll help you introduce the topic, intrigue your audience, and unfold the layers of your topic one by one until you disclose your main arguments and summarize the presentation. A good presentation layout has a hierarchical, chronological, or logical flow that leads the viewer from start to finish.

If you’re creating a Prezi presentation, you can create a dynamic storytelling experience by experimenting with your layout. Instead of going from slide to slide, you can zoom in and out of topics and experiment with different shapes, animations, and effects that draw the viewer into your story world. Here’s an example of a Prezi presentation with a great storytelling layout:

Author: Lydia Antonatos

Data visualizations can elevate your presentation from being a good one to a great one. By providing data behind your arguments, you’ll appear more trustworthy and confident in your audience’s eyes.

Add charts, graphs, interactive maps, and more to your presentations with Prezi Design. You can choose from a wide selection of charts and maps to illustrate your data. With interactive elements, you’ll be able to engage your audience and make a memorable impact.

Engaging visuals, a well-structured layout, and relevant data visualizations will provide a great starting base to create a memorable presentation. Discover other tips and tricks that make your presentation effective and capture people’s attention.

Choosing a topic for a presentation isn’t easy. When selecting a topic, think about the goal of your presentation, your interest and knowledge about the topic, and whether or not your audience will find it relevant and interesting for them. Also, get inspired by other topics that’ll help you figure out what you want to talk about. Lastly, when creating your presentation, consider the impact of visuals, layout, and data visualizations. To simplify the creation process, follow the step-by-step process of making a presentation with helpful tips and resources.

Reading Time :

A presentation can be nerve-wracking, may it be for first-timers or pros, as you must turn a critical issue into a dynamic, persuasive, and informative one. Before you enhance your oratory skills and overcome your fear of public speaking , you must brainstorm excellent, fun topics for your presentation.

When doing a presentation, you cannot start a thing without coming up with a presentation topic . It is harder to find the best subject than prepare the lecture, as you need to be specific about the topic you want to present.

Besides oratory skills and PowerPoint mastery, you need to have informative and fun topics for presentations that can influence the audience. Watch this and get more ideas about informative topics:

One of the best ways to nail a presentation is to choose the best presentation topics that fit your expertise and target audience.

How to Choose a Good Topic

Choosing the best one out of informative presentation topics can be daunting and confusing if you want to create an informative speech or lecture. Here are some considerations that you must know.

  • Purpose. Deciding your goal determines what your audience will bring after your talk, especially for persuasive presentation topics. Here is a video on various topics about persuasion:

  • Audience. Consider your audience’s demographic profiles and common ground when choosing presentation topics and connect them with their interests, beliefs, and social and cultural backgrounds.
  • Interests. Determine what presentation topic ideas you are most passionate about and what you know the most. Interesting topics for presentation give a head start upon your research phase, ensuring a well-received discussion for the audience. Get useful guides on how to keep your audience interested in this video:

  • Credibility. To convince your audience about the pieces of information that you will discuss, choosing a credible and well-backed lecture is another plus.
  • Conciseness . From 12 seconds in 2000, humans’ average attention span decreased to eight seconds in 2017. Thus, being concise is another essential factor in choosing presentation topics, as having a wordy title can confuse or intimidate your potential audience.

250 unique presentation ideas

Need some inspiration for presentation topics that are not boring? Here's 250 of them.

Co-founder, Head of Product

Capturing people’s attention has become more difficult than ever. So what’s the key to creating a memorable presentation that engages your audience?

It starts by picking a presentation topic that stands out. Whether you’re a student, hobbyist, or professional, here are more than 250 unique presentation ideas — and best practices — to jumpstart your creative process.

How to choose a great presentation topic

There’s no such thing as a bad presentation idea in general. A good presentation topic is one that is well suited for your goals, audience, and setting. A great presentation topic is one that is appropriate for its context and where you can bring unique or novel perspective.

Ask yourself these questions when choosing a presentation topic.

  • Articulate your goals: Why are you presenting? Is it to inform, persuade, entertain, or inspire? You should be able to articulate the three takeaways your audience should leave the presentation with. Write these down.
  • Understand your audience : Who will be watching or listening? Consider their demographics, interests, and level of knowledge. How in depth should you go in your presentation? What content formats will resonate with them?
  • Define your constraints: What medium will your presentation use? Are you presenting on stage to hundreds of people in a lecture hall or over video conference to a small team? How long do you have? How many slides do you need?
  • Make it your own: Do you have a unique angle or perspective on this topic? That is the biggest difference between a boring presentation and a captivating one. How passionate are you about it? If you’re disinterested, your audience will be able to tell.
  • Narrow your focus : There’s nothing more boring than a generic presentation. The broader your topic, the more you run the risk of not being able to say anything new. Narrow your topic down to something specific and manageable. Instead of "The Benefits of a Healthy Diet,” try "10 Superfoods and Their Impact on Brain Health."

The 10-Minute Presentation Topics Structure

As you might imagine, the hardest part of a 10-minute presentation is actually sticking to 10 minutes. None of your audience, organisers or fellow speakers will be pleased if your speech starts running over, but it’s hard to know how not to.

You might be tempted to cram as much information as possible, but doing so is just going to make for an overbearing presentation. Especially for this type of presentation , knowing what to leave out is as much of a skill as knowing what to put in, so try and follow the sample below for a perfectly structured presentation.

  • Introduction (1 slide) – Start your presentation with a quick question, fact or story relayed in a maximum of 2 minutes.
  • Body (3 slides) – Get into the nitty gritty of your talk with 3 slides. Audiences struggle to take home more than three ideas, so spacing all three out over the course of 6 or 7 minutes can be very effective.
  • Conclusion (1 slide) – End it all with a quick sum up of your 3 main points. You should be able to do this in 1 minute.

This 10-minute presentation example format contains a fairly conservative 5 slides, based on the famous 10-20-30 rule of presentations. In that rule, an ideal presentation is 10 slides in 20 minutes, meaning a 10-minute presentation would only require 5 slides.

Use interactive features with AhaSlides to gain better engagement in any type of presentation! You can spin the fun to the presentation, by gathering crowd ideas by idea board , live word clouds , or surveying them by top free survey tool , online polling , and also test their knowledge with an online quiz creator !

10 Interview Presentation Ideas – 10-Minute Presentation Topics

More and more nowadays, recruiters are turning to quick-fire presentation as a means of testing a candidate’s skill and confidence in presenting something.

But, it’s more than that. Recruiters also want to learn about you as a person. They want to know what interests you, what makes you tick and what has changed your life in a profound way.

If you can nail any of these presentation topics in your interview, you’ll be starting next Monday!

  • Someone who inspires you – Pick a hero and talk about their background, their achievements, what you’ve learned from them and how it’s shaped you as a person.
  • The most eye-opening place you’ve ever been – A travelling experience or holiday that blew your mind. This might not necessarily be your favourite ever abroad experience, but it was one that made you realise something you had not thought about before.
  • An imagined problem – Set out a hypothetical problem at the company you’re applying for. Show the recruiters the steps you would take to eradicate that problem for good.
  • Something you’re proud of – We’ve all got achievements we’re proud of, and they do not necessarily work achievements. A quick 10-minute presentation on something you’ve done or made that has made you proud can reveal a lot of good stuff about you as a person.
  • The future of your field – Make some interesting, bold predictions about where you think the industry is heading in the upcoming years. Do research, get stats to back up your claims, and avoid being condescending.
  • A workflow you’ve fixed – Untidy workflows are rampant in many workplaces. If you’ve had a hand in turning something inefficient into a well-oiled machine, make a presentation about it!
  • A book you’d love to write – Assuming you were a top-class wordsmith, what’s the one topic you’d love to write a book about? Would it be fiction or non-fiction? What would the plot be? Who are the characters?
  • Your favourite work culture – Choose the job with the best work culture in terms of office atmosphere, rules, after-work activities and trips away. Explain what was so great about it; it might give your potential new boss a few ideas!
  • Pet peeves in the workplace – If you fancy yourself as a bit of a comedian, listing out the things that grind your gears in the office could be a good laugh and a nice bit of observational comedy for your recruiters. Make sure it’s actually funny though, as listening to a candidate moan for 10 minutes is not normally something that leads to recruitment.
  • The good and bad of remote working – Surely every office worker in the world has experience of remote working. Pry open your own experiences and discuss whether or not they’ve been for the better or for, the worse.

300+ Engaging PowerPoint Presentation Topics

  • by Refresh Science
  • September 13, 2021 January 6, 2022

You are probably familiar with a PowerPoint presentation. This is a Microsoft presentation file format that is mainly used for office and educational purposes. Basically, you write all the important things you want to share with your audience then arrange them accordingly in different slides.

Before you start a presentation, you need to have a PowerPoint presentation topic that you have intended to talk about. This makes it much easier to share what you had with your audience.

Reasons why PowerPoint Presentations are Important

Consequently, there are various reasons as to why a PowerPoint presentation is very important. Some of the reasons are as follows;

Improves your Audience’s Focus

A PowerPoint presentation is a visual presentation, meaning that your audience will be able to see the ppt topics that you have to discuss on that day. Unlike regular presentations where the audience may be easily distracted, a PowerPoint presentation uses images, videos and audios, all of which have an impact on how your audience reacts.

Encourages teamwork

PowerPoint presentation also enhances teamwork especially in office settings. Assuming that you are working on the same project , and you and your team have agreed to handle different parts of the project.

During presentation, the different team members will handle their various ppt presentation topics. This is mainly because they have a better understanding of each topic since they handled them separately.

Encourages Content Sharing

This favours content creators who inspire the public in one way or the other. You have created a presentation and some of your audiences were not able to be present because of unavoidable reasons.

You can share your presentation on different online platforms such as YouTube so that they can watch the ppt topics at their own convenience. They can have access to this information anytime they want to.

How do you choose a Good PowerPoint Presentation Topic?

Choosing a ppt presentation topic should not be taken lightly the way some people do. This is what determines whether or not you will capture the attention of your audience. It is usually advisable that you choose a presentation topic that your audience will resonate with easily. Below are some tips that will help you choose a good PowerPoint presentation topic.

  • Choose a topic that interests you.

Choosing a topic that you love will give you an easy time in talking about it and sharing with your audience.

  • Pay attention to the occasion as of that moment

Everything has its own time and place. Always ensure that your presentation topic relates to the occasion or the situation at hand as of that time.

  • Consider your audience

Is the topic you want to discuss favouring your audience? For instance, talking about finance and politics to adolescent teenagers is irrelevant. Once you know your audience, you will choose a topic that best suits them.

  • Choose a topic that is very easy to illustrate

Use of photos and other graphics makes a presentation topic more interesting and easy to understand.

Features of a Good PowerPoint Presentation

A common mistake that many people make is thinking that any presentation is a good presentation. Well, that is not the case. When creating a ppt presentation topic, you need to create one that will keep your audience engaged. To do this, you need to understand what a good presentation is. 10 original content ideas you can create with Google Slides

Yes, Google Slides is a great way to make effortless, eye-catching presentations. But this free online software can also be used for many different creative projects.

Most of us already have a basic understanding of crafting presentations from high school, college or work, so it’s just about adapting those skills in new ways .

Here are some fun ideas to get you started, and remember to check out our huge library of Google Slides themes to inspire you.

  • Wedding invitations
  • Stories and comics for children
  • A recipe cookbook
  • Social media posts
  • Diplomas and certificates
  • Photo album
  • A creative CV
  • Interactive games

#1 Wedding invitations

Slides Carnival Google Slides and PowerPoint Template Wedding invitation with Google Slides

Let’s face it: weddings can get real expensive, real quick. Making your own invitations and Save The Date cards can help you save money while also being sure your vision will come to life.

So how to do it?

  • Make a new document on Slides and change the page setup (in the File menu).
  • Usually, wedding invitations are 5″x7″ — select Custom and input the size yourself.
  • Then, use text boxes to add all the relevant information. Be sure to add the date, time, location, dress code, and RSVP deadline.
  • Finally, download it as a PDF document and send it off to be printed on cardstock or thick paper for a touch of elegance.

There are no rules as to how it should look — the design is totally up to your own tastes. Check out our suggested templates which you can take inspiration from if need be!

#2 Stories and comics for children

Slides Carnival Google Slides and PowerPoint Template Free Presentation Templates Teachers Narrated Storybooks

It’s surprisingly easy to make your own comic or tales books and strips in Slides. Each slide will be a different panel for your comic — change the page setup to the custom size of 10×12 inches. Make as many slides as you need to tell your story. You can scan in your own drawings, use pictures from the internet or our SlidesCarnival templates , or even use your own family photos for a personal touch.

Add in text boxes for narration, and speech bubbles (Insert⇾Shapes⇾Callout) for dialog. You could even add animated GIFs to make it even more eye-catching. Here’s a great video tutorial for more in-depth steps.

Once it’s finished, you can open your story “book” in the Slides app to read it together.

#3 a recipe cookbook.

Slides Carnival Google Slides and PowerPoint Template Recipe book with Google slides

If you’re anything like us, you have recipes saved all over the place: in your browser bookmarks, on Pinterest, in your Instagram saved posts, and deep in your email folders. Slides is a great way to keep everything in one place – plus it can be accessed by anyone in the family from their own device!

  • Choose a template or color scheme you like.
  • Fill in slides with the recipe instructions, your tips and tricks, and photos of your creations.
  • You could even use the “speaker notes” section to add a few lines about how the recipe turned out, or how you would tweak it in the future.

This makes it super easy to consult your recipes from your phone while grocery shopping or cooking, plus you can then forward your personalized cookbook to family and friends !

#4 social media posts.

Slides Carnival Google Slides and PowerPoint Template Social media post with Google Slides

Did you realize that you can use Slides to make slick, professional posts for Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, and Facebook? Simply resize your page (File ⇾ Page Setup ⇾ Custom) to the right dimensions for each platform , and go to town!

You can easily import your brand’s color scheme, and change the background and font colors to fit in with the rest of the posts on your page. Choose fonts that suit your brand, then insert photos, shapes, logos , and icons — get creative! Remember, the more visually appealing, the better.

Once you’re done, download the file as a .JPG or .PNG, and you’ll have a file that’s ready to share to your socials.

You can use the same technique to make other marketing materials you may need, like brochures, flyers, or posters.

Slides Carnival Google Slides and PowerPoint Template Free Presentation Templates Teachers Award Diplomas

Whether you need a certificate for a child’s preschool diploma, something to encourage your kids to complete tasks, recognition of an online course, or an employee of the month award, Google Slides is here to help.

Certificates don’t have much text, so you may like to make the background a solid color or choose a visual background like a nice floral pattern. Place your text in a nice big font — you could even import an image of a gold seal to make it look official.

Download the Slide as a PDF, then you can email it or have it printed on thick paper.

#6 a journal.

Slides Carnival Google Slides and PowerPoint Template Journal created with Google Slides

You can make your online journal as extensive as a written diary, or you can use it more as a place to collect photos and jot down memories or thoughts. Plus, it’ll be safer in your Google account than in your desk drawer!

With this one, the options really are endless. Fill up the slides with text — or if you’ve got a tablet with a smart pencil, you could handwrite directly onto the slide. Import photos you’ve found from around the internet, or upload your own straight from your camera roll.

Use your digital journal to keep track of your goals and achievements, or just create a running list of things that make you happy.

Get creative with color and fonts, and make this your own little artistic outlet.

#7 an ebook.

Slides Carnival Google Slides and PowerPoint Template eBook created with Google Slides

While it may make sense to write an eBook in Google Docs, Slides can actually help you make it look much more interesting. Books don’t just have to be walls of black and white text — spice up your story with illustrations, graphs, titles, or even just a decorative border.

In Docs, it can be tricky to get images to align exactly where you want, but in Slides, it’s a piece of cake. Plus, you can easily resize your slides into whatever format is most appropriate for your project.

A typical book, if you’re after that look, is 8.5” x 11”. Once it’s done, download it as a PDF and you could even print it for a physical copy.

#8 photo album.

Slides Carnival Google Slides and PowerPoint Template Photo Album created with Google Slides

We’re constantly taking and sharing photos on every social media platform under the sun, but it’s important to also have something more long-lasting . Sure, you can get a nice album printed with your favorite memories, but that can get pricey, especially if you want to make copies for your loved ones.

A photo album on Google Slides, however, is the easiest thing to create and share. You could make a different Slides file for different memories, like birthdays, holidays, weddings , etc, or just have one master file with all your photos.

There are heaps of templates you can choose from. Treat it like a digital scrapbook: add captions, titles, illustrations, and even animations alongside your most cherished photos.

If you want to make it collaborative, just change the share settings (top right corner), then email the link to anyone you want. You can either give them edit access or just let them view your creation.

CVs and resumes should be impressive and eye-catching : we’re past the time where a black-and-white wall of text will cut it.

You can use Google Slides to create a neat but creative one-page CV, or you can take it a step further and craft a whole resume presentation. This will help you stand out from the other applicants.

Don’t make it too long, but choose a professional template and make slides for your headshot, work experience, education, special skills, and any other relevant information that will make you memorable.

You can directly share the presentation link, or download it as a PDF and send it over email.

Some Advice On How to Make an Appealing Presentation

If you want to deliver a good presentation, keep in mind that it is not merely a successful topic that is decisive for making it a winning one. Actually, one may struggle with the presentation due to the lack of experience of public speaking. If you do not feel confident when delivering a topic in front of the audience, the presentation may easily be turned into a failure. If you want to prepare an effective presentation, be sure that there are specific tips to take into account if you want to make a presentation effective and appealing to the reader. So, check out the main aspects:

Aspects for Writing Great Presentation

  • Work on the presentation design and pay attention to the visuals and info graphics. If you have slides that have only words on the big screen, be sure that such presentation will not be appealing to you audience. So, express creativity and add some uniqueness – add pictures that are relevant to what you are speaking about and also make sure that they can catch attention of your listeners. Set your inner artist free in order to make your presentation stand out of the crowd. However, strike a balance when it comes to the colors and fonts – they should distract attention of your audience from the main idea.
  • Do not use overly sophisticated words but at the same time be eloquent. Proper vocabulary choice will also attract the attention of your audience. When it comes to vocabulary choice, also please consider that you should speak in words you know what they mean and how they are pronounced. Of course, some sophistication may impress your audience but it will not be a positive impression when you are ignorant of the meanings of the words or rules of spelling or pronunciation.
  • When planning your presentation, manage your time wisely and set aside some time for answering questions from your audience. Normally, the audience is interested in some aspects and is eager to know something more about the area of research you are talking about. Therefore, express your politeness here and provide your listeners with the possibility to engage in a conversation.

How to Create Slides That Suit Your Superiors: 11 Tips

When you’re pitching ideas or budgets to execs in your organization, you need to deliver slides that fit those particular people just right. This checklist identifies the key considerations.

I recently interviewed 20 of my customers, all in senior roles at Fortune 100 companies, and asked them their biggest pain point in presenting to higher-ups and even colleagues. What I heard consistently was that it can feel like Goldilocks bouncing from one option to the next, testing to figure out what’s “just right.” Does the audience want deep reports? Sparse slides? Something in between? Like … what?

Teams often come to presentation meetings with vast amounts of backup content just in case an exec wants to take a deep dive on any given point. There’s often a struggle to anticipate every direction attendees might want to go. It’s frustrating, and it’s not efficient.

There are many ways to build slides. I’m not just talking about crafting them well versus poorly. I’m talking about all of the important decisions regarding how to organize them, how much text to use, when to lean into a chart, the best ways to use bullets and color, and whether to include an appendix with additional information. Before you make your next proposal or request of the executive team, use this list of 11 tips for your next set of slides as a guide.

Four Things You Must Have in Every Exec’s Slides

Before we drill down into the harder aspects, the ones where your executives’ tastes may vary widely, let’s quickly cover four aspects that you can consider the building blocks — the basics you should never proceed without.

Start with an executive summary. Begin the slide deck with a tight executive summary that follows a three-act structure. First, start with stating the current realities. Second, clearly state the problem or opportunity your idea addresses and its potential impact. Third, explain how your recommendation solves the problem or exploits the opportunity and the next steps you’re proposing.

Have a logical organization. The arc of the deck — the package from beginning to end — should make sense. If your audience reads only the headline of every slide, the order should be coherent and make most of the case for you. The content below each slide’s headline must support the statement made in the title. Remove everything that doesn’t support your point; as writers will tell you, you sometimes need to “kill your darlings” when you’re editing.

Begin the slide deck with a tight executive summary that follows a three-act structure.

Make it skimmable. Help your audience to quickly grasp the point without getting bogged down in details. Create a clear visual hierarchy. Guide the reader’s eye through the content: Use bold headings, bullet points, and numbered lists to break down information into digestible pieces. Highlight key takeaways or conclusions in a different color or font size to draw attention to these critical points.

Focus on concise insights. Succinct statements with clear insights are everyone’s jam. Every slide should serve a purpose and contribute directly to the decision-making process. Distill complex information. Don’t use 100 words when 20 words will nail it. If you’re having difficulty trimming, consider using company-approved AI tools to help you take out the fluff.

Five Preferences to Confirm With the Person You Want to Reach

Now we’ll delve into what your particular audience does and does not want. If you haven’t yet, start by asking the person you’re presenting to what they generally prefer. They probably know themselves well but have not been asked to articulate how they like to receive information.

Ask how dense is too dense. Some executives prefer detailed slides with comprehensive data. Others favor a more high-level approach. You’re weighing how to balance informative content with readability, ensuring that slides are not overloaded yet are sufficiently detailed to support decision-making.

Confirm the delivery format and timing. Some execs like information presented to them. Others prefer a pre-read of the material followed by a discussion. I always recommend our tool Slidedocs (I’ve written a free e-book on them), which are visual documents using both words and images. The templates help presenters organize their thoughts into a document for a pre-read or a read-along. They are designed to be skimmable and able to travel through your organization without the help of a presenter.

I’m a huge fan of pre-reads and prefer to use my time in meetings to ask questions and build alignment. If your audience didn’t review your material in advance, ask at the top of the meeting whether they would like you to present it or would prefer to read through it and then discuss it.

Find out how much data visualization they prefer. Charts, graphs, photos, and illustrations often communicate complex data more clearly than words alone. When execs can see what you’re saying, they often can better understand the impact of your idea. Does the exec want to understand exact numbers? Bar charts allow them to move their eyes across a series of specifics. Does the exec want to know the shape of a trend over time? Line charts can show the pattern. (See “Classic Charts Communicate Data Quickly.”) Some prefer charts with annotations that draw attention to what you think is the most important point. Others want to make their own conclusions from the data.

One of my clients, the CEO of a massive commercial real estate company, doesn’t want anything visualized. He prefers numbers, only in a table, and only in two colors — black and red. You might think this is archaic. But the fact that he’s clear to his teams about what he wants takes all the mystery out of how to communicate with him.

When the stakes are high, have a conceptual thinker help with diagrams and concepts. If you don’t have one on your team, and when it’s high stakes, find an internal designer to help you or hire one. You can’t afford to have the baby (your idea) thrown out with the bathwater (terrible slides).

Identify which details need spelling out. How well do the people you’re presenting to know the landscape and function of the company and products you’re talking about? For example, if your engineering team threw a slide into a deck about an issue that requires executive approval, do the execs all speak geek? Or do you need to explain the technology so that they will really understand the ask? Either eliminate internal jargon and acronyms or unpack those bits, especially if your proposal deeply involves expertise outside of the executives’ domain.

Ask whether appendices will be useful. When you’re organizing a presentation, you often troll data, read through complicated reports, and even hire external experts to figure out what’s best for the company. Do your execs want access to that supporting data? You can add a document to the end of the presentation as an appendix to show all of the data and source material. This allows the main content of the slides to remain focused and accessible while still providing comprehensive background information for those who want more.

Two Tips to Improve Your Presentation Skills

Getting materials in place is the biggest step. They will be your best tools for selling your ideas. But there are two extra areas to pay attention to as a presenter: how you handle questions and how you use every experience to improve.

Anticipate questions, and practice your answers. Before you have your meeting, gather a small team to challenge every point you make. Invite colleagues you trust to role-play as “a rapidly inquisitive exec” or “the doubting naysayer exec” so you are prepared to present your idea well. They’re gonna grill you, and practicing will help you remain unruffled when it happens.

Related Articles

Ask for feedback after the presentation. Establish a feedback loop with those you presented to. Ask what worked well and how you can improve. If attendees don’t have the time, find people who have had their ideas funded and talk to them about what they did that worked. Advice and some perspective will help you nail your performance even better next time.

Empathetically understanding your audience members and how they process information, whether it’s executives or peers, sets up your ideas for success. Clarity creates efficiency. When a presentation fits just right, you’ve given your great thinking the best chance of moving through your organization and having maximum impact.
