Next steps on Air Canada seat selection policy coming “at the appropriate time”

Post date: May 1 2024

Date: May 1 2024

By: The Canadian Press

MONTREAL — Air Canada has pressed pause on a new seat selection fee just two days after it implemented the policy, but not before drawing the ire of some travellers online.

As confirmed by Travelweek earlier this week , the new policy is on hold for now, due to operational reasons.”

seat assignments air canada

For years, Air Canada customers with economy fares have been able to change the seat automatically assigned to them at check-in, free of charge.

However, travel agents received notice from the company less than two weeks ago that lower-tier passengers who had not purchased a seat in advance would have to pay a fee if they wanted to change their automatically designated spot — online or in person — before boarding,   starting April 24.

Travellers took to social media to protest the move, with some saying they were caught off guard and given no heads-up beforehand by Air Canada.

“I think it is insane that airlines are charging every single dime, as they first started with baggage and now seats,” said Tommy Chan in an email. “What’s next?”

Air Canada said that two days after implementing the fees, which can top $50, it suspended the policy. But it doesn’t plan to cancel it altogether.

“With the limited time the amended policy was in place there was very little customer feedback. Instead the decision to pause was based on our own operational considerations,” said spokesman Peter Fitzpatrick in an email.

“The pause will let us better support our employees so as to ensure a smooth rollout in the future, which will ultimately benefit of our customers.”

The company will announce “next steps … at the appropriate time,” he added.

The temporarily paused policy marks the latest example of airlines’ growing reliance on so-called ancillary fees for formerly bundled services ranging from checked bags to onboard snacks and Wi-Fi access.

Air Canada took in nearly US$2 billion in so-called ancillary revenue in 2022, up by nearly 50 per cent from five years earlier, according to airline consulting firm IdeaWorksCompany. The category’s share of total revenue for the company grew to more than 15 per cent from below 11 per cent in the same five-year period.

WestJet this month introduced a new service tier, “Extended Comfort,” where economy-class passengers can pay for extra legroom, early access to overhead bins — coveted real estate due to checked baggage costs — and a free alcoholic drink.

Most airlines charge customers with lower-tier tickets a fee to select their seats in advance. But Air Canada’s forthcoming fee applies to passengers with a “basic” or “standard” economy fare who opt to change the seats they were assigned at check-in, not long before their plane departs. Other airlines such as budget carriers Spirit Airlines and Flair Airlines have similar policies.

United Airlines already has a fee for basic economy customers who want to select a seat during check-in. If they opt out, they aren’t assigned a seat until they reach the gate.

“Gate assignments would mean that if the flight is oversold, these people are the most likely to be denied boarding. At least (Air Canada is) not doing that,” Richard Vanderlubbe, who heads Hamilton-based travel agency Tripcentral.ca.

“I do understand the rationale for the policy. Full-service airlines are competing with low-cost carriers on price with basic fares.”

Those who buy one of the higher-tier tickets enjoy complimentary seat selection well ahead of time as part of the purchase process, albeit a pricier one.

Air Canada said all customers travelling with children will be assigned seats together for free.

What to expect flying Air Canada economy class

Air canada economy vs. premium economy, ways to get good value on air canada, air canada's economy class, recapped.

Air Canada's Aeroplan , its frequent flyer program, updated its award charts in September 2022. The resulting changes are a mixed bag. Some North American routes might increase in cost up to 10%, but economy awards aren't going up. Plus, short-haul award flights between North America and South America are decreasing by up to 33% because of a new distance band.

If you’re looking to book economy flights on Air Canada, here’s what you need to know to make the most of your booking.

Air Canada introduced basic economy back in 2018, but unlike other airlines, the difference between basic and standard economy amenities isn’t very drastic. Air Canada charges for checked bags and advanced seat selection in both bundles.

Other, more expensive options include Flex, Comfort and Latitude, which offer free bags, better amenities and discounts.

Air Canada Economy class travel experience

Award bookings

Booking an Air Canada economy class award ticket puts you into standard economy, although you have an option to pay more points for booking into Flex, Comfort or Latitude.

seat assignments air canada

Air Canada seats in economy are inconsistent across the fleet. Seat sizes and pitch (distance between the seats) vary, not only between narrow-body aircraft (A320 and B337) and wide-body (A330 and B787), but also within the same group of aircraft.

While you’re more likely to enjoy more comfortable seats on wide-body jets, a few Air Canada Rouge narrow-body A320 aircraft have spectacular 34-inch pitch, versus the 31-inch on A330. On the other end of the spectrum, there are seats with a dreadful 29-inch pitch.

As to the onboard service, Air Canada has received a number of accolades from airline rating company Skytrax , including Best Airline in North America (eight times in 10 years), Best Airline Staff in Canada and Best Airline Cabin Cleanliness in North America.

Other features of Air Canada’s economy class

Other features for both basic and standard economy include:

Bag allowance: Carry-on only.

Boarding: No priority boarding.

Food: Available for purchase (free with a Latitude ticket).

Paying to upgrade from economy class to Air Canada premium economy might be an interesting proposition for longer flights. So, what is the difference between Air Canada economy versus premium economy?

In short, premium economy passengers receive perks in the airport and on the plane. They receive expedited check-in and priority baggage services, early boarding and larger, more comfortable seats — which also have more legroom. Premium economy passengers board in Zone 2 of 6, whereas economy flyers typically board in Zones 4, 5 or 6.

The general Air Canada economy class experience varies by destination.

International economy flyers get complimentary wines, spirits and meals and a personal touch screen entertainment center. A pillow and blanket are also offered for free.

North America and Caribbean economy flyers, meanwhile, only get a personal touch screen entertainment center. No snacks or sleeping comforts are provided for free.

Book with points on short hauls, especially when cash fares are high

Use Air Canada points on short but often expensive routes up to 500 miles. Unlike some airlines using fully dynamic pricing, Air Canada still has caps on maximum pricing, so paying 6,000 to 10,000 points for a flight that could otherwise cost hundreds of dollars is a good deal.

Here are some example flight routes in the 500-mile band:

Seattle or Portland, Oregon, to Vancouver.

New York to Toronto, Ottawa or Montreal.

Also keep in mind that some short, domestic Air Canada flights can be expensive; consider using your Aeroplan points when you’re traveling within Canada, too.

Book your Air Canada flight with United miles

If you have United MileagePlus miles, booking an Air Canada economy flight with United miles (United and Air Canada are Star Alliance partners), may cost you less than booking directly on Air Canada.

For a November flight between Miami and Vancouver, it would cost only 14,000 United miles as compared to the 17,500-25,000 required for the 2,800+ mile flight using Air Canada’s Aeroplan points.

» Learn more: Great ways to earn United MileagePlus Miles

It’s not always this way, so make sure you check the rates for your desired flight on both the Air Canada and United website.

Consider the Aeroplan® Credit Card , if you're a regular traveler

Aeroplan Credit Card

If you fly Air Canada regularly, the Aeroplan® Credit Card can easily return enough value to make the $95 annual fee a relative bargain. The free checked bag benefit alone can cover the cost with one or two round trips a year. The card earns:

3 points per dollar spent on purchases made directly with Air Canada.

3 points per dollar spent on groceries.

3 points per dollar spent at restaurants (including takeout and eligible delivery services).

1 point per dollar spent on all other purchases.

500 bonus points for every $2,000 spent in a month (up to a maximum of 1,500 points per month).

Other benefits include:

Sign-up offer: Earn 60,000 points after you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months your account is open. .

First checked bag free on Air Canada flights for you and up to eight other passengers on the same reservation. This benefit applies regardless of what class of economy you travel in.

Automatic 25K status in the first year, which gives you perks like priority check-in, priority boarding and upgrades.

Earn a one-level status boost to 35K Status or higher when you spend $50,000 or more on your card in one year.

Reimbursement for the application fee for TSA PreCheck, Global Entry or NEXUS .

Preferred pricing , which may allow you to redeem fewer points for award flights (depending on itinerary).

Pack only a carry-on, and bring your own snacks

Checking a bag will cost you around $24 ($30 CAD) unless you book a more expensive Flex, Comfort or Latitude ticket (or you pay with the Aeroplan® Credit Card . If you can do with just a carry-on, that’ll save you nearly $50 ($60 CAD) per round trip.

The Air Canada Bistro meal box costs over $8 ($10.49 CAD). Taking your snack on board can not only save you more than $16 ($21 CAD) per round trip, but can also give you control of what you want to eat.

» Learn more: Checked baggage vs. carry-on: What you need to know

Air Canada economy seats may not be consistent across the fleet, but that also means you can be in for a nice surprise, since some aircraft offer very generous legroom. Plus, you can expect solid service from Air Canada, which Skytrax named Best Airline in North America.

Unfortunately, the new award chart has made the cost of your award ticket generally more expensive; however, you can still get good value by redeeming your points on short flights or booking Air Canada flights with United miles. You can also save some money by not checking a bag and by packing your own food.

Air Canada Pauses Changes to Seat Selection Policy at Check-In

Update: Air Canada has paused the implementation of changes to its seat selection policy at check-in for passengers on Economy (Basic) and Economy (Standard) fares. This article has been updated to reflect the announcement.

Air Canada has paused making changes to the way passengers booked on specific fares can select seats upon check-in. The airline had previously implemented the changes, but has paused making the changes to a later date, citing operational reasons.

Once the changes are announced and implemented, travellers who book an Economy (Basic) or Economy (Standard) fare will no longer be able to select a Standard seat for free at check-in. Rather, Air Canada will automatically assign a seat upon check-in, and passengers will need to pay to change to a different seat if they so desire.

The date on which the changes will be implemented has yet to be announced.

Air Canada to Change Seat Selection Policy at Check-In

Air Canada will eventually introduce seat assignments at check-in for passengers travelling on select fares, rather than offering complimentary seat selection at check-in.

Once implemented, this means that you’ll no longer be able to select a Standard seat free-of-charge at check-in if you’re booked on an Economy (Basic) or an Economy (Standard) fare.

Instead, Air Canada will automatically assign you a seat at check-in, and if you’d like to change to a different one, you’ll have to pay a fee ranging from $14–90 (CAD), depending on the route and fare.

This will be a departure from the current policy, which allows passengers travelling on Economy (Basic) or Economy (Standard) fares the ability to select any available Standard seat for free upon check-in.

This new seat assignment policy will affect passengers on an Air Canada flight within Canada, to/from the United States, and on select international itineraries on Economy (Basic) or Economy (Standard) fares. The full list of international destinations that offer complimentary Standard seat selection for Economy (Standard) fares can be found on the Air Canada website .

Note that if you’ve booked a different Air Canada economy fare, including Economy (Flex), Economy (Comfort), and Economy (Latitude), you’ll still be able to select a seat at no cost.

Likewise, if you have Aeroplan Elite Status , you can select a Preferred seat at no cost either at check-in or in advance (depending on your status and fare purchased), and Super Elites will continue to have access to complimentary Standard and Preferred seat selection on all fares.

If you travel as a family, all airlines flying to or from Canada must ensure parents are seated nearby to children aged 14 and under, as per Canada’s Air Passenger Protection Regulations (APPR) .

Children aged four and under must be seated next to their parent or guardian, children aged 5–11 must be in the same row and separated by no more than a seat, and children aged 12–13 must be no more than one row away.

Some Passengers Must Now Pay to Change Assigned Seats

Passengers without status who frequently travel on Economy (Basic) and Economy (Standard) fares on Air Canada flights won’t be happy with this change, since it’s currently possible to select any available Standard seat at check-in for free.

Until the change is implemented, the best strategy is to check in exactly 24 hours prior to departure, at which point you can choose from all available Standard seats in the cabin, and the likelihood of getting a window or aisle seat or a seat closer to the front of the cabin is at its best.

Going forward, Air Canada will automatically assign you a seat at check-in, which could mean that you could get a window or aisle seat, but it could also mean that you get the middle seat in the back row. If you’re travelling with someone else, it’s possible that you could be seated away from each other, too.

If you’re not happy with the seats you’re assigned, you’ll have to pay to move elsewhere.

It’s worth noting that Air Canada isn’t the only airline to assign seats to passengers on lower fares and charge for any changes, as it’s a practice WestJet, Porter Airlines, and Flair Airlines have long had in place.

From the airline’s perspective, unbundled pricing is transparent through the booking process, in that passengers can choose a lower fare with fewer inclusions, pay for a higher fare that has complimentary seat selection, or pay for a different seat at check-in if the one they’re assigned isn’t desired.

Charging for seat selection is also one of the many ways airlines generate ancillary revenue, which is becoming more and more common these days as airlines unbundle fares and allow passengers to choose options based on what they need.

From the passenger’s perspective, this policy change could result in yet another added cost associated with flying, especially if you want to avoid the possibility of flying in a middle seat, being stuck in the back row, or being separated from your travel partner.

If seating is important to you, it’s worth considering the difference between Economy (Basic), Economy (Standard), and Economy (Flex) fares, since the latter comes with one free checked bag and complimentary advance seat selection, amongst other inclusions.

seat assignments air canada

If you don’t enjoy these inclusions by other means, such as with a co-branded credit card or status, the price difference may be favourable compared to paying for a seat and a bag à la carte with Economy (Basic) or Economy (Standard) fares.

Otherwise, you can look to using fixed-value points currencies to offset any additional fees, or to the $150 travel credit available on the National Bank® World Elite® Mastercard® , which can be used against seat selection fees.

Air Canada has paused making changes to its seat assignment policy for passengers travelling on Economy (Basic) and Economy (Standard) fares.

Once it’s implemented at a later date, passengers who book these fares will be assigned a Standard seat, and they’ll need to pay to change to a different seat, if desired.

The date on which Air Canada will implement the changes is yet to be announced.

The big red bar that says "manage seats"??

No big red bar :( i was kind of hoping maybe it wasn't actually intuitive rather than just not there.

It's a code share. I called and talked to someone but I'm skeptical and want to see it for myself. It's a LONG trip and my seat mate will also be unhappy if I'm in the middle (since I'll have to climb him/her on a very regular basis....)

seat assignments air canada

Just do at quof says, and log in using a web browser. You can definitely do it there.

You can change seat selections on the app. Don't think it works for codeshares though. You do have to add the trip manually with the 6 digit PNR, and from there you can change/look at seats if it is AC booked.

Codeshare may be different.

You all are awesome! So it is definitely not in the app. Even on the website it was really tricky. I could not find/change my seats but did find a page where I could print out a confirmation with them listed. So they are there! Thanks again!

Infants are considered to be children under the age of 2 years. Children may fly without a seat on the Air Canada plane. For safety reasons, Air Canada recommends the use of a child restraint on board the aircraft rather than holding a child on your lap. For children over 2 years of age, you must buy a seat on the plane. Children under the age of 8 must be accompanied by a passenger age 16 or older. The accompanying adult must occupy a seat in the same cabin and sit next to the young child.

Only one cat or small dog per passenger is allowed in the cabin. The pet must be at least 12 weeks old. A pet will count as one standard carry-on bag allowed on board. Maximum size of the container: hard - 23 cm height, 40 cm width, 55 cm length; soft - 27 cm height, 40 cm width, 55 cm length.
