Nakuru 'kamagera' Candidly Speaks the Woes of His Job, See What He Would Rather Do

  • Elijah Wa Tene shared his journey to becoming a 'kamagera'; the people who sit in the matatu to hoodwink passengers into thinking it is full so that they can get in
  • According to Elijah, it is a very tiring job and only pays KSh 20 per matatu, which is very hard to save
  • He is now hoping to get KSh 50,000 and start a well-stocked boutique business so that he ca improve his life

Every day between 8 am and 6 pm every day, one is likely to find Elija Wa Tene seated in a matatu, but unlike the other passengers, he never really goes anywhere.

Elijag drops out of school in Class EIght

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke , Elijah shared that he had to drop out of school after writing his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams as his parents were too poor to educate him further.

After looking for a job for two years, Elijah decided to be a 'kamagera', otherwise known as kupiga seti. Within the matatu culture, such people just sit in the matatus the whole day; their job is to hoodwink people outside that the matatu is full and ready to move.

"There are no jobs, so one day I was looking for a job in Nakuru town I met some people I knew there. After talking to them, I learnt that there was a job I could od an earn a living.

Elijah gets KSh 20 per matatu

"I get paid KSh 20, [er matatu and cumulatively, I earn between KSh 400 and KSh 500 every day," said Elija.

Apart from the little compensation given for the job, there are other challenges that make it hard.

"You get very tired as you have to wait for people to sit down and you also stay for a very long before you get enough money to buy lunch," he said.
"Also you have to wait for long before you can start counting momey and whenever people fail to enter you don't feelwell because you know you will go home empty-handed," he added.

Given his paltry wages, it is difficult for Elijah to meet his bills and save something at the end of the day as well. Despite the future looking bleak at best for him, he still desires to own a boutique and he requires a capital of KSh 50,000 to be in business.

Lady drops out campus, becomes a tout

In another story, Laureen, a young woman, shared her journey into the matatu industry after financial constraints forced her out of Cooperative University.

Initially, Laureen's parents were against her joining the male-dominated industry, but financial difficulties led them to support her decision.

She admits to being apprehensive about becoming a tout due to the challenges and uncertainties, but she mustered courage and pursued her dream.
