The E‐Health Patient Record Management System
Abstract This thesis deals with the creation of an electronic, low cost, health care system primarily intended for use in Southern Africa. From our observations and interactions with hospitals within South Africa, we have noticed a need to update the systems currently in place. Currently, hospitals deploy a paper based record management system, relying heavily on files that are easily lost and are inefficient to use, ultimately to the detriment of the patient.

The adoption and use of technology in South African (SA) hospitals is not new. Some SA researchers have undertaken research on this topic with an aim towards improving existing health technologies at hospitals. A recent review of the literature highlights some of these researches on this topic such as by Kerry (2006), Smit and de la Harpe (2008), O’Mahony (2009), Mostert-Phipps, Pottas and Korpela (2012), Hartmann and Sooklal (2012), Cilliers and Flowerday (2013), and Weeks (2013). A summary of the researches is highlighted here.

Healthcare providers have, over the years, struggled with the management of patient records. The struggle became exaggerated as information became increasingly large and convoluted. The contemporary healthcare environment is characterised by information overload; without the proper organisation of information resources, access to valuation resources can become an albatross, if not properly managed. Health information is the data associated with the medical ailment of a patient's history, containing symptoms, diagnoses, procedures, and results. Quick access to this vital information may be a life-and-death decision that must not be taken for granted. This chapter aims to investigate how electronic records are managed in a contemporary method as adopted by the University College Hospital (UCH).
