At the heart of this movement were three of America’s most influential authors: Ralph Waldo Emerson, Walt Whitman, and Henry David Thoreau.

Before becoming an Islamic state, Afghanistan was once home to a medley of religious practices, the oldest being Hinduism. According to the 2021-2022 National Pet Owners Survey, 70% of U.S. households (90.5 million homes) owned a pet as of 2022, with 69 million U.S. households having a pet dog. Paramahansa Yogananda was a Hindu monk and yogi who came to the United States in 1920 and lived here for the last 32 years of his life. He is considered to be the first major Hindu Guru to settle in the United States. For those of us who are Hindu, we have noticed that some of the biggest Hollywood films produced in the last several decades have mirrored many of Hinduism's most fundamental philosophical ideas. Instead of aligning with the interests of the humans, who merely want to mine Pandora for the valuable mineral unobtanium, Sully fights alongside the alien humanoids native to the world, called Na’vi, who live in harmony with nature, believe all life is sacred, and that all life is connected by a divine force — teachings synonymous with Hinduism. Thus, similar to the avatars of Vishnu, Sully defends and preserves a spiritual culture by defeating those who would destroy it for materialistic pursuit. While this film doesn’t indicate in any direct way that they have anything to do with Hinduism, it’s clear they are communicating Hindu ideas that everyone relates to and understands on a profound level.

The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), also known as the Hare Krishna movement, was founded in 1966 by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, a highly respected Vaishnava (devotion to the god Vishnu and his incarnations avatars) scholar and monk. At the age of 70, Swami Prabhupada traveled from India to New York City to bring the Bhakti tradition, or Krishna Consciousness, to the west. In the 11 years before his passing in 1977, Srila Prabhupada translated, with elaborate commentaries, 60 volumes of Vaishnava literature; established more than 100 temples on six continents; and initiated 5,000 disciples. Today, his writings are studied in universities around the globe and are translated into nearly 100 languages. To date, ISKCON has over 400 temples, dozens of rural communities and eco-sustainable projects, and nearly 100 vegetarian restaurants world-wide with 56 of them in the US.

Dr. Anandi Gopal Joshi is credited with being the first woman from India to study medicine in the United States. Born in Bombay in 1865, she was married at the age of ten to an older man who had been her teacher. Dr. Joshi had a child at the age of 13, but the child died when only 10 days old. She believed that with better medical care, the child would have lived, and she frequently cited this as motivation for her desire to attend medical school. Her husband encouraged her in her academic pursuits and in 1883, Joshee joined the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, now known as the Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia. She graduated in 1886 with her degree in medicine; her M.D. thesis focused on Hindu obstetrics. Yoga is considered Hinduism’s gift to humanity. At its broadest, yoga, from the root word “yuj” in Sanskrit, means to unite. The Jagannath temple is a trinity abode or dham dedicated to Lord Krishna, his elder brother Balarama and their sister Subhadra. The images of the trinity are made of new wood and adorned in splendour. On the full moon day of ashada, the images are taken out with the accompaniment of huge chariots to the streets. Once the chariots come on the road, the continuous movements of the participants do not allow the procession to come to a halt.

This ride is usually covered uphill and downhill track. The procession takes almost ten hours to reach its destination.

Every year in mid-summer, Lord Jagannath, with his elder brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra, goes on vacation, traveling on grand chariots, from his temple in Puri to his garden palace in the countryside. This belief of the Hindus has given rise to one of the biggest religious festivals in India — the Rath Yatra or the Chariot Festival. This is also the etymological origin of the English word 'Juggernaut'.

Jagannath, believed to be an avatar of Lord Vishnu , is the Lord of Puri — the coastal town of Orissa in eastern India. Rath Yatra is of great significance to the Hindus , and especially to the people of Orissa. It is during this time that the three deities of Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra are taken out in a grand procession in specially made gigantic temple-like chariots called raths, which are pulled by thousands of devotees.

Historical Origin

Many believe that the custom of placing idols on grand chariots and pulling them is of Buddhist origin. Fa Hien, the Chinese historian, who visited India in the 5th century AD, had written about the chariot of Buddha being pulled along public roads.

The Origin of 'Juggernaut'

History has it that when the British first observed the Rath Yatra in the 18th century, they were so amazed that they sent home shocking descriptions which gave rise to the term 'juggernaut', meaning "destructive force". This connotation may have originated from the occasional but accidental death of some devotees under the chariot wheels caused by the crowd and commotion.

How the Festival Is Celebrated

The festival begins with the Ratha Prathistha or invoking ceremony in the morning, but the Ratha Tana or chariot pulling is the most exciting part of the festival, which begins in the late afternoon when the chariots of Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhdra start rolling. Each of these carriages have different specifications: The chariot of Lord Jagannath is called Nandighosa , has 18 wheels and is 23 cubits high; the chariot of Balabhadra, called Taladhvaja has 16 wheels and is 22 cubits high; Devadalana , the chariot of Subhadra has 14 wheels and is 21 cubits high.

Each year these wooden chariots are constructed anew in accordance with religious specifications. The idols of these three deities are also made of wood and they are religiously replaced by new ones every after 12 years. After a nine-day sojourn of the deities at the country temple amidst festivities, the divine summer vacation gets over and the three return to the city temple of Lord Jagannath.

The Great Rath Yatra of Puri

The Puri Rath Yatra is world famous for the crowd that it attracts. Puri being the abode of these three deities, the place plays host to devotees, tourists and about one million pilgrims from across India and abroad. Many artists and artisans are engaged in building these three chariots, weaving its fabric covers that dress up the chariots and painting them in the right shades and motifs to give them the best possible looks.

Fourteen tailors are engaged in stitching up the covers that require almost 1,200 meters of cloth. Orissa's government-run textile mill usually supply the cloth needed to decorate the chariots. However, other Bombay-based Century Mills also donate cloth for the Rath Yatra.

Rath Yatra of Ahmedabad

The Rath Yatra of Ahmedabad stands next to the Puri festival in grandeur and crowd-pulling. Nowadays, there are not just the thousands of people who participate in the Ahmedabad event, there are also communication satellites which the police use under the global positioning system to chart the course of the chariots on a map on the computer screen to monitor them from a control room. This is because Ahmedabad Rath Yatra has a bloody record. The last violent Rath Yatra which the city saw was in 1992 when the city suddenly became surcharged with communal riots. And, as you know, is a very riot-prone state!

Rath Yatra of Mahesh

The Rath Yatra of Mahesh in the Hoogly district of West Bengal is also of historical repute. This is not only because it's the grandest and the oldest Rath Yatras in Bengal, but because of the huge congregation it manages to attract. The Mahesh Rath Yatra of 1875 is of special historical significance: A young girl was lost in the fair and amongst many, the district magistrate Bankim Chandra Chattopadhya — the great Bengali poet and author of India's National song — himself went out to search for the girl. A couple of months later this incident inspired him to write the famous novel Radharani .

Rath Yatra is a great festival because of its ability to unite people in its festivity. All people, rich and poor, brahmins or shudras equally enjoy the fairs and the joy they bring. She did it to keep him as a guard outside her house when she was taking a bath.

In 1528, Babri Masjid was built in Ayodhya under the supervision of Mir Baqi ( General of Babar ). But the people of Ayodhya say that Babri Masjid was built by breaking the Ram temple.

In 1853, for the first time, there was a communal fight over it and in 1859 the British allowed Muslims to worship inside the structure and Hindus outside on the platform.

In 1885, Mahant Raghuvar Das proposed before the court to get the construction done on the platform. On December 23, 1949, a statue of Lord Rama is found here, due to which there are riots among Hindu Muslims .

And because of these riots, the entire area is banned by the government. In 1950, Mahant Raghuvar Das filed a case to remove the ban on worshiping. In 1959, Nirmohi Akhara files the case and says that this entire area should be given to the Hindus to worship.

In 1961, the Sunni Waqf Board also files a case and says that this entire area belongs to Muslims because there was a mosque here earlier and we used to offer Namaz.

During this time, Vishwa Hindu Parishad is formed in support of Hindus. In 1986, the Faizabad court gave permission for the Hindus to worship over the entire area. And its Against Muslims formed Babri Masjid Committee which claimed the entire area for Muslims.

In 1986, a group is formed to represent Ram Ji’s idol named Ram Lalla Virajman . And in the year 1990, LK Advani took a rath yatra from Somnath to Ayodhya due to which the riots reached the stream level.

Due to the riots in 1991, the UP government took control of the entire disposed area. On 6 December 1992 Kar Sevaks demolished the mosque and communal riots spread throughout India.

On 16 December 1992, the Librahan Commission was created to inquire into the riots. And during this time the government proposed to build a temple, mosque, library, and museum at this disputed place but people opposed it.

In 2002, the Central Government formed a committee called “Ayodhya Vibhag” whose work was to resolve the dispute by negotiating between the two sides.

In April 2002, Allahabad High Court asks “ASI” to investigate and builds a three-judge bench for its hearing in Lucknow.

According to the ASI report, there was a temple in Ayodhya during the 12th century and a mosque in 1528. But no proof was found about what was between the 12th century to 15th century.

And taking all these things into consideration, the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court gave its verdict on 30 September 2010 in which it said that the place where Ramamurthi is found will be given to Ramlala Virajaman Group , Sita Rasoi, Ram Chabootara will be given to Nirmohi Akhara , And this remaining space will be given to the Sunni Waqf Board .

On 9 May 2011, the Supreme Court put the decision of the High Court on hold. In February 2016, Subramanian Swamy filed a case to finalize the Ayodhya case.

In March 2017, Supreme Court Chief Justice KS Kelkar asked the two sides to resolve the matter by talking among themselves.

But till December 2017, many appeals were made by the Allahabad High Court against many people. The Supreme Court said that it will give its verdict in January 2019.

The Supreme Court set up a bench of judges in which Includes Justices Ranjan Gogoi, Sharad Arbind Bobde, DY Chandrachud, Ashok Bhusan, and S.Abdul Nazeer .

Sushil Kumar Jain was representing Nirmohi Akhara, CS Vaidyanathan was representing Ramlala Virajaman and Rajiv Dhawan was representing the Sunni Waqf Board in the Supreme Court .

And the Supreme Court also asks all the groups to submit the molding of relief. On 9 November 2019, the Supreme Court gave its decision and said that 2.77 acres of land would be given to Ramlala Virajman and 5 acres of land would be given to Sunni Waqf Board .
