Leiden university, the netherlands, semester options: fall or spring, language: english.
Leiden University in The Netherlands is one of Europe’s most highly acclaimed international universities, with a world-renowned reputation in comparative and international law subjects. BU Law students pursue such topics as public international law, legal history, canon law, and East European law. The school’s close proximity to The Hague and War Crimes Tribunal allows students to observe proceedings at some of the world’s most venerable international legal institutions. Leiden also serves as a center for international studies and is one of the most attractive destinations for European ERASMUS students. The city of Leiden’s rich historical tradition and active international student population also make it an ideal setting to study international topics.
To earn 12 credits, students enroll in four classes from the school’s expansive offerings in international and comparative law. All courses are taught in English. No more than four students from BU Law may participate each academic year.
Please note that due to complications with the US Department of Education, Leiden is unable to honor US government financial aid at this time. As a result, any student receiving federal student loans should seek an alternative program.

How to Find a Strong Human Rights Law Program
Target law schools with human rights law clinics and journals, as well as a broad selection of relevant courses.
Find a Strong Human Rights Law Program
Getty Images
An introductory course on human rights law is a start, but a good human rights law program should have a variety of related course offerings.
Key Takeaways:
- Look for more than an introductory course on human rights law.
- Find out what law faculty know and are doing that's relevant.
- Find out what the school's students specializing in human rights law do after graduating.
Clinical opportunities, quality professors and active student organizations are important criteria when choosing a law school with a solid human rights program, experts say, and students should carefully research programs to find their best fit.
The Human Rights Clinic at the University of Miami School of Law "played a major role in my decision of where to attend law school,” says Gita Howard, a human rights attorney who graduated from the Florida law school in 2021.
Howard’s initial interest in pursuing international human rights law was formed during the many summers she spent in India growing up. She says she developed a nuanced understanding of global issues and a drive to create a positive global impact.
“International human rights law seemed like a tangible and meaningful way to pursue my passion for social change.”
Finding a strong human rights law program is important to prepare students for a successful career as a human rights lawyer, experts say. Here are the top features they say students should be looking for in a program.
A Broad Selection of Human Rights Law Courses
An introductory course on human rights law is a start, but a good human rights law program should have a variety of related course offerings, experts say.
Prospective students should research whether the program offers courses “on the full spectrum of international human rights law,” says Diane A. Desierto, professor of law and global affairs at the University of Notre Dame Law School in Indiana, where she also is faculty director of the LL.M. in International Human Rights Law and founding director of the Global Human Rights Clinic.
Such courses should include civil, political, economic, social, cultural, developmental, environmental and labor topics, “as well as the frontier courses on the expanding applications of international human rights law across public law and private law ,” she says.
Desierto says students should also find out whether a program offers legal and interdisciplinary methods, as well as theoretical and experiential opportunities to gain expertise in international human rights law.
Experienced Human Rights Law Faculty
Other features to look for in a program are faculty actively working on human rights law projects, faculty publishing human rights law papers and scholar-practitioners.
Notre Dame's program, for example, enables students “to customize their learning, training, and mentoring according to specific professional objectives across different forms of human rights law practice,” Desierto says. The small class sizes mean students have access to one-on-one mentoring and customized learning from different experts throughout the university and its global campuses abroad.
Students already in law school who want to specialize in human rights "should be researching which faculty are specializing in human rights in their scholarship and courses,” says Anna Ivey, founder of Ivey Consulting, which helps people apply to selective U.S. colleges and law schools.
An Impressive Job Attainment Record
Desierto says it's important to look into whether a program invests in the well-being and success of their students during and after graduation.
“Our program does this extensively during the student's matriculation into the program, as well as in supporting postgraduate clerkships and internships in international, regional and national courts and tribunals and organizations,” Desierto says. The program measures success by how its students "flourish and succeed in their work of striving for human rights outcomes in their respective countries and communities."
It's also important to find out whether alumni are working with major human rights institutions. Ivey recommends students check law schools' social media platforms, such as LinkedIn, "to see what alums work in the field to get a sense of the alumni network for that specialization.”
A Human Rights Clinic or Law Journal
Participating in a human rights law clinic or contributing to human rights law journals is important on the resumes of aspiring human rights lawyers, as positions in the field are competitive, experts say.
“Human rights clinics provide a really critical opportunity for students to develop their knowledge of human rights law, as well as practice the necessary skills to succeed in the field under the guidance of experts,” Howard says.
For example, the Human Rights Clinic at the University of Miami provides students with experiential learning opportunities in U.S. and international human rights litigation and advocacy, allowing students to work with the United Nations and the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights.
“Its inspiring professors and meaningful projects gave me the skills, support and network necessary to pursue a career in human rights law,” Howard says.
Apart from looking at whether a law school offers clinics or journals dedicated to human rights law, Ivey recommends looking at whether such a journal “hosts some kind of annual symposium on the topic.”
Other activities, such as participation in relevant student groups, are important, experts say. For example, Howard served as president and co-founder of the Human Rights Society, an advocacy organization at her school.
Scholarships and Fellowships
Law school can be expensive and human rights law may not pay as well as other law specialties, so scholarship opportunities are an important consideration, experts say.
Experts say a law school’s investment in human rights law can be seen in scholarships offered to students in the discipline. Students can check a school's website for scholarship information. Notre Dame's program typically provides full scholarships for 15 to 20 students, Desierto says.
There are also fellowships available during and after law school. Twice, Howard was a HOPE Fellow, receiving funding to pursue public interest summer jobs while in law school. She spent her first summer interning at the Tibetan Legal Association in Dharamsala, India, and her second summer as an intern for the U.N.'s Office of Legal Affairs in the general legal division.
“After law school, a common way to break into the human rights field is through a fellowship with a human rights organization,” Howard says.
Howard received a Human Rights Program Fellowship from her law school with a placement at Human Rights First, a nonprofit, nonpartisan international human rights organization. After her fellowship, she was brought on as an associate attorney. She notes that fellowship opportunities often require funding from a student's law school, as well.
“It can be helpful for students to research whether fellowship funding is currently or potentially available at a prospective law school,” Howard says.

How to register
My career journey has been highly unplanned! My first degree was in Biochemistry and it was only after undertaking the England and Wales law conversion course (then CPE, now PGDL) and qualifying as a Solicitor that I realised international law, and specifically IHRL, was the most interesting part of law that I really wanted to work in. Each opportunity has tended to open the door in some way for the next- albeit that moving between the private sector, international organisations, government, civil society, and academia is still nowhere near as straightforward as it should be…. Dr Steven Malby Deputy Head of the Human Rights Department in the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office
Growing up in apartheid South Africa had a profound impact on the future trajectory of my career. Over time and participating in the transition to constitutional democracy in South Africa helped me to understand how law can both construct social injustices, but also play a significant role in dismantling these injustices. My career has been dedicated to exploring in ways in which both the South African legal system and international law can be more responsive to systemic human rights violations. Professor Sandra Liebenberg H.F. Oppenheimer Chair in Human Rights Law at the University of Stellenbosch Law Faculty
From my career, the two most important lessons I have learned are to truly listen to what people are saying, and to be guided by your own internal sense of justice in any situation without fear or favour. Dr Matthew Gillett Chair Rapporteur for the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention/ Lecturer at Essex Law School

Webster Athens Welcomes John F. Kennedy School of Law at National University for ‘Trial of Socrates’ Discourse
April 19, 2024
- history politics and international relations
- undergraduate
A “Trial of Socrates” academic discourse recently took center stage at the Webster Athens Cultural Center – bringing together students and scholars from both Webster Athens and the John F. Kennedy School of Law in San Diego. Students, faculty and staff from National University visited Webster Athens and attended the event in conjunction with a travel/study course which focuses on the “Trial of Socrates.”
The discussion, which delved into the 399 BC trial of the famous Greek philosopher Socrates, aimed to provide a comprehensive analysis of the trial. Academics, professionals and students participated in vibrant discussions that not only revisited the historical significance of the trial, but also explored its relevance in today’s global context – specifically its implications for modern legal and ethical frameworks.
The discourse featured several experts who spoke about the “Trial of Socrates,” including Yiannis Simonides. Simonides’ work as an actor, director and producer with Elliniko Theatro has led him to perform the acclaimed play “Socrates Now” in over 50 countries, giving him a unique viewpoint of the historical trial. His presentation was not just an academic lecture but included a performance which brought the historical context and intricacies of Socratic thought to life. Students conversed with Simonides to gain a deeper understanding of the historical, philosophical and cultural dimensions of Socrates’ trial.
Lisa Hutton, dean of the College of Law and Public Service at National University, along with Chris Gus Kanios, professor of law at the John F. Kennedy School of Law and president of the Modern Greek Studies Foundation, attended the event. Hutton and Kanios played key roles in the organization of the discourse. Professor Bryan Hance, innovative director of paralegal and pre-law studies; James Rogers, director of advanced student experience; and Tina Stallone, director of dean support, all from National University, also attended.
The “Trial of Socrates” event was hosted by Vasilis J. Botopoulos, rector of Webster Athens; along with Susie Michailidis, professor and vice rector of academic affairs and Niki Stavrou, hellenic studies program director, assistant professor, and CEO of Nikos Kazantzakis Estate. “This discourse served as a bridge for cultural exchange between the academic communities of the United States and Greece, fostering a mutual understanding that transcends geographical and disciplinary boundaries,” stated Rector Botopoulos. “These types of interactions reflect Webster’s commitment to fostering global citizenship and collaborative approaches to universal challenges.”

Title : Active carbons as nanoporous materials for solving of environmental problems
However, up to now, the main carriers of catalytic additives have been mineral sorbents: silica gels, alumogels. This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds. Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.
Victor M. Mukhin was born in 1946 in the town of Orsk, Russia. In 1970 he graduated the Technological Institute in Leningrad. Victor M. Mukhin was directed to work to the scientific-industrial organization "Neorganika" (Elektrostal, Moscow region) where he is working during 47 years, at present as the head of the laboratory of carbon sorbents. Victor M. Mukhin defended a Ph. D. thesis and a doctoral thesis at the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (in 1979 and 1997 accordingly). Professor of Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia. Scientific interests: production, investigation and application of active carbons, technological and ecological carbon-adsorptive processes, environmental protection, production of ecologically clean food.

PhD candidates come in all shapes and sizes, from those with an appointment at the University to dual PhDs who have a job outside the University. Here we explain which PhD places we have at Leiden University, so you can quickly see which type suits you.
Funded PhD candidates
The University may appoint full or part-time PhD candidates. Most PhD candidates have a funded place as a PhD candidate. A full-time place is in principle a four-year appointment with 10% teaching duties. PhD candidates sometimes choose to do a cotutelle or joint doctorate . You can also be appointed as a PhD fellow. This is a six-year appointment with 35% teaching duties.
See our job vacancies for PhD candidates
PhDs without a funded place
Contract PhDs receive a grant in their country of origin, which enables them to conduct PhD research at our university. External PhDs or dual PhDs do not receive any funding in principle. They write their thesis – often alongside their regular work – under the supervision of a supervisor from Leiden. To be accepted as an external PhD, you must have your PhD proposal approved by a Graduate School . The University also has a dual PhD programme to give experienced ‘knowledge workers’ the opportunity to earn a PhD at Leiden University.

Kiran Helps Write New State Law
Written by Staff
April 22, 2024
Hamline MA in graduate, Amna Kiran has been working for years on getting a bill passed in the state legislature to help simplify Minnesota drivers tests. The bill recently passed. She is a big school ESL teacher in Anoka, and she noticed that many of her students were passing their driver education classes but flunking the written test for a driver’s license.
After doing a study, she found that this was a common occurrence, even for native speakers of English, and that it appeared to be at least in part because of the complexity of the language on the test. She got backing from a Republican representative and a Democratic senator to back a bill to change the language of the driving test to plain English, It asks the state government to comply with the federal Plain Language Guidelines.
