Advantages of Old Media

1. Old media have broad reach. Old media were designed as a form of mass communication that was to be broadcast to the masses. From the invention of the printing press in 1440 to the 1980s, print media such as newspapers, then radio, and finally television, followed this same broadcast formula. One message was broadcast to an entire population of a nation. People of all ages got their news from a small amount of publications that had extremely broad reach across a population.

2. Urgent information is broadly dispersed. A follow-up benefit of this broad reach of old media was that information of public importance was distributed rapidly. Still today, when a public disaster occurs, most people turn to old media of television and radio to get important information from authorities. This information is often controlled by, distributed by, and policed by the government so everyone gets the same information about how to protect themselves during times of emergency.

3. The people who control news dissemination are authorities and experts. Old media has important gatekeepers (Carr, 2012) to ensure the quality and authenticity of information. Published information is parsed by editors and producers to ensure it is true. People along the information supply train are trained and experienced journalists, and their editors provide checks and balances to what is distributed in newspaper, radio and television broadcasts. By contrast, new media can be produced and disseminated by anybody with an internet connection, leading to misinformation. This is one possible con of the internet .

He said that when people of a nation all started to read the same information each day, they began to see themselves as a community. Before then, our sense of community was to people in our villages. After that, we saw ourselves as an “imagined community” who share a common set of values and culture.

Disadvantages of Old Media

6. Minority views can be marginalized. There is extensive literature that shows that people of color, women, and other minorities have had their views curtailed and silenced in old media. Instead, dominant views are perpetuated by old media. Critical theory and post-structuralism (inspired in large part by Michel Foucault) have long stressed that media has produced unfair stereotypes and narratives about minorities. Old media were complicit in the reproduction and normalization of ‘dominant discourses’, and have long silenced minority or unpopular opinions.

7 The government and oligarchs often control the message. Throughout the 20th Century, the ability to share information was controlled by a small group of people. This helped them to maintain their power. Interestingly, many major communication models in the 20th Century that had a linear structure (e.g. the Laswell model and the Shannon-Weaver model ) are largely outdated due to the two-way communication features of new media.

9. People don’t listen to or respect old media anymore. The declining trust in expertise and authority is widely a result of the emergence of new media. As previously marginalized and even extreme voices have been magnified by new media, people have started turning away from old media and considering it to be elitist and untrue. Whether these claims are accurate or not, the declining trust in old media means it doesn’t have the clout it once did.

10. Information production is no longer just for the elites. In the era of blogs, social media , and instant communication, elites and the powerful no longer hold a monopoly on mass dissemination of information. Anyone with an internet connection can now have their beliefs and opinions broadcast to anyone around the world who wants to listen. This removal of gatekeepers has allowed us to become not just information consumers, but also information producers.

11. People can find their ‘tribe’. With the rise of the internet, people can connect to people who share their interests from around the world. This has led to the rise of a multitude of internet subcultures where people get together on forums and associate with their ‘tribe’. Now, subculture groups (goths, LGBTQI youth, punks, etc.) who feel out of place among their friends from school can go online and connect with people who share their experiences.

12. National borders are less of a barrier. In the 20th Century, our ability to communicate was often restricted to people in our local community. This limited who we could associate with. The rise of dispersed tribes could have the effect of undermining traditional cultural groups (based around national identities, etc.) and instead allow us to link up with our dispersed sub-cultural groups around the world.

13. Minority views and opinions can gain traction. People from minority groups that were traditionally excluded from old mass media platforms have found platforms to share their opinions online. Together, they have been able to form groups large enough to have their voices heard. Silenced voices have risen up – from the #metoo movement to the Arab Spring – to change our world for the better.

14. We can stay in touch. Prior to social media platforms like Facebook, we often lost touch with people form out past. But now, thanks to social media, we can watch people from a distance and share our major achievements, milestones and life changes to stay in touch with people on our distant periphery.

15. News is instantaneous. Thanks to news apps, Twitter, etc., news spreads faster than ever. We no longer need to wait until the 6pm news to access our news. As part of this instantaneous access to knowledge, we now have what’s known as the “24 hour news cycle”. Consumers have an insatiable appetite for news, so new media have to pump out an ongoing stream of ever more sensationalized news articles.

16. News producers get instant feedback. As soon as a piece of news is pumped out, tweets fling back and comments are provided to show feedback. The advent of the mass media and its exponential increase in popularity has had significant implications for scientific research, social dynamics, and politics. The popularity of mass media has for instance provided social scientists with the previously unprecedented access to large quantities of information from which they could conduct extensive quantitative and qualitative research on human behavior. Mass media that takes the form of social media platforms has equally enhanced the ability of individuals to discover, connect, and interact with multiple others in a virtual world. The mass media’s ability to reach broad audiences has similarly revolutionized the nature of politics by availing a more effective means for leaders to influence the masses. The above observations are but a small representative of the unlimited potential of mass media to effect positive change. Mass media, however, could also have less than consequences that would be less than ideal.

Foremost, the mass media mass media could and is being used by corporate business to influence the behavior of consumers for the ultimate goal of maximizing profits in the long-term. Advertisements in typical business practice are structured to in such a manner that they use enticing rhetoric to solicit the interest of the potential buyer. While such methods are ethical, mass media has given corporations the ability to engage in immoral marketing practices. The case study on Cambridge Analytica’s data harvesting practices perhaps best exemplifies the significance of the issue. The article by Rogers et al. demonstrates the businesses corporates are capable of using human behavioral science “to sell ads and products without oversight.” The case of Cambridge Analytica indeed shows the intensified risk of breaches of data privacy and the wrong use of personal information in the age of big data.

Secondly, the mass media has heralded an era in which the political class has realized more effective mechanisms of manipulating the citizenry to for political purposes. The article by Chenoweth, for instance, observes the reality that social media platforms have granted politicians the power to target specific groups in specific places, at the convenient time, and with tailor-made political messages. The problem, however, is that politician may abuse such power to manipulate the opinions of users of social media or even use such platforms to suppress the freedom of expression that forms the foundation of today’s globalized world. Rodgers et al. indeed recognize the emerging practice of “micro-targeting” in which the manipulators of political opinion create multiple social media accounts to convey the false perception that an entire community upholds specific views.

Finally, mass media has enormous potential to dehumanize in as much as it facilitates human social interactions. The content of mass media is controlled by a relatively small group of comprising the media house owners and third parties who use media such as television, radio, and the internet to push specific messages to the unsuspecting consumer. In such circumstances, audiences of mass are rendered vulnerable to consuming content whose purpose only the controlling parties determine. The film titled “Miss Representation” captures this reality. It documents how the mass media has altered women’s perceptions of themselves to such extents that they have subscribed to its idealization of the perfect woman. The mass media has made women more so conscious of their outward experience that it becomes the foundation of their self-esteem (Siebel Newsom, and Acquaro).

Ultimately, mass media is experiencing a significant shift in its applications with its users discovering its potential to implement ideas that are universally unethical. The mass media poses a serious threat to the confidentiality of data due to the commercialization of information stored by social media platforms. It further threatens the freedom of expression by giving the political class the power to manipulate public opinion. More significantly, the mass media has proven its potential to dehumanize. Indeed, users of mass media are bound to remain at a relative disadvantage if they do not commence an honest reflection on the harmful effects it has at the personal and societal levels.

We also have various types of mass media such as social media , digital media, television, and radio which promote mass communication. Even though we are more connected than we ever were, it’s still paradoxical, considering it leads to isolation. We will look at both the advantages and disadvantages of mass communication in this analysis.

Advantages of Mass Communication

The biggest benefit of mass communication is that it makes communication among larger audiences feasible. Here are some other benefits:

1. Global communication

Thanks to mass communication, we can now stay connected to each other more. Considering we can communicate globally, creating awareness among the public has become attainable. This is especially good news when it comes to creating awareness about health and the environment. It provides a medium people can use to educate themselves and follow actions that have a positive impact, all the while making the world a better place. And, in times of crisis, it allows others to send help.

2. Freedom of expression

There was a time when not everyone was allowed to express their thoughts and opinions. Even if they were, they didn’t have the means to do so. But, those days are gone now. Mass communication has made it possible for everyone to express themselves freely, giving them a voice. It is easily accessible, so people don’t have to go out of their way to support what they believe in. They can use social and digital media where their voices will be heard by millions and billions of people.

3. Business communication

For businesses to prosper, they should be able to acquire more customers and retain the existing ones. What’s a better way to achieve this goal than using mass communication? If it were not for advertisements and marketing, the customers wouldn’t know about the existence of various brands, making it difficult for them to do business. Using business communication, it has become easier to build a good customer base.

4. Helps spread Art and Culture

Mass communication is a tool that can help the wide spread of traditional art and culture with ease. This era of the internet has truly helped mass communication by giving it wings. Previously, only newspapers and radio shows could attract new enthusiasts to enjoy the finer traditional culture, but today, we have numerous social media platforms that can advertise and propagate the value of traditions and culture. People are even actively trying to do something new with their culture in hopes of making it trending, thus advocating for the need for such avenues in our lives.

5. Network of information

Right from performing a simple search function to learning courses, the Internet has got you covered. Social media allows anyone to learn anything they are interested in, and there is no shortage of information. It allows easy electronic duplication of information, thus making mass education possible. Along with this, it saves a lot of costs that are otherwise spent on the production of information. Apart from educational purposes, people can use mass media for entertainment purposes.

6. Promotes diversity

Since we can communicate worldwide using mass communication, diversity comes naturally. You might have come across TV and radio programs that are dedicated to exploring different cultures globally. It promotes diversity and lets the world know about diverse art and culture. It can be a great learning experience to see the world from different perspectives. And, not only that, you can basically travel the world virtually without actually going there. It shows the cultural practices and beliefs of various groups, allowing you to learn something new every time.

Disadvantages of Mass Communication

You might have heard that powerful people own mass media. There is definitely some truth to it, making it a disadvantage of mass communication. Here are some other drawbacks:

1. Unreliable news

It’s said you should believe half of what you see and none of what you hear, and there is a reason behind it. But, most of the mass media is about what we see and hear. It can be used by powerful people to show the public what they want and make them believe it. Moreover, the unreliability of news can have consequences. Since it is easy to spread misinformation through media, it can be used to manipulate people. These spreads lie among the masses and create a hateful environment.

Along with using media to change people’s mindsets, it can also lead to physical health issues. Sometimes the news and information can get so addictive that people spend their whole day watching them. And, these results in eyesight and hearing problems. If you have experienced this, you know how unproductive it makes you feel at the end of the day. It feels worse knowing that you have wasted your time, consuming unwanted content because you were distracted.

3. It can promote wrong values

One of the major drawbacks of mass media is that it may promote the wrong virtues. How often have you seen content that promotes smoking, drugs, and other censored topics? Despite being harmful to public health, mass media still promotes and even glamorizes them. In addition to this, they showcase harmful stunts, which, when performed by people, can lead to personal injuries. Additionally, some media contents are not appropriate for children. This leads to another drawback: manually limiting their access to this type of content can be a chore.

4. Mass communication can be used to promote Hate and Disinformation

Since mass communication can plant an idea in our midst, there is no guarantee that others won’t misuse it. It is a powerful tool, especially today when everyone has an outlet just a finger touch away. This ease of convenience has also made communication technology a tool for promoting hate and propagating disinformation. Objectively speaking, such attempts are, more often than not, part of a larger narrative, aligning with some agenda.

But the vastness of this mode of communication and its dynamic nature also helps cover any shady on goings. As a result, people could come to believe such negative thoughts and ideals to be the norm and trust any disinformation solely because of the source. One famous example is the spread of fake news and untruthful facts over popular mass communication platforms such as Facebook and WhatsApp. Modern technology and communication should be used wisely, for the good.

4. Compromised privacy

The relationship between mass media and the security of personal information is quite complicated. There have been a lot of data breach incidents which has forced people to think about their compromised privacy. The mass media reaches out to a large audience, making millions of them vulnerable to data exploitation. To deal with these privacy issues, tighter regulations are imposed, and companies are held accountable. But this is not enough, and individuals should be careful about what they share on social media.

Even though the mass media can be used to spread information, the truth is that it can be exploited just as easily. In recent times, the frequency of hacking has increased. Most of the time, social networks are hacked. Furthermore, along with individuals, corporate accounts are hacked, leading to massive losses. The personal details of the users shared online are hacked by cybercriminals, and used against them. So, while media allows for mass communication, the intentions of participants aren’t always genuine.

Initially hailed as an effective form to spread information, mass media has come a long way. Now with the advent of technology, there are multiple sources through which information can reach an individual. However, all these sources have a different way of reporting an incident, and when the news spreads, it takes a whole new meaning.

Drawing on the famous quote, “Too many cooks spoil the broth,” I believe that the advent of mass media has brought more harm than good. Now with social media, information spreads immediately, and there is no need to rely on next-day newspapers. Many individuals do not fact-check the news and often consider it true. 

My belief that the cons of mass media outweighed its pros was strengthened when there were religious riots in some cities across the country. All these groups were incited by multiple fake news that spread through various mass media platforms. The situation worsened to the point that internet services were suspended in the areas where violence erupted.

After witnessing such violent incidents, I can conclude that mass media is primarily used as a tool to manipulate people into choosing a side. Unbiased information is a luxury that an ordinary person cannot afford in the present day. But since there are no alternatives to mass media, it continues to thrive and create havoc.

Even with its way of providing an easy way of sharing information, mass media will not be a positive tool until serious checks are put in place to ensure unbiased news reaches the masses. But with companies operating independently and often having more powers than a country’s government, it might seem like a distant dream.

It is a fact that no tool can work on its own, it needs human intervention. Mass media is one such tool that, in theory, seems to be the peak of our technological innovation. But using powerful mediums like these depends on the humans who wield them.

Mass media arrived in the 21st century, making its indistinguishable mark on the technological landscape. But years later, one cannot say that it has been all smooth sailing with this tool. I believe it has affected a considerable part of our lives, and not just in a good way.

The internet is a highly relevant example in this case. I recall being a young adult when my parents installed an internet connection in my home. It seemed like a magic gateway, letting me play games, helping me keep track of everything happening around the world, and more.

However, the reality of this tool was understood later. Various crimes, including shootings and hate crimes against communities, have been streamed over the internet without checking. This is a testament that without proper rules and regulations to check content online, mass media will continue to be a place of great violent propaganda, inciting crimes along with the other positive benefits it carries.

Even though this situation could improve in the future, it is vital to acknowledge the present issues and devise solutions.  Unbiased information is a luxury that an ordinary person cannot afford in the present day. But since there are no alternatives to mass media, it continues to thrive and create havoc.

Introduction: Long ago, people used to perform folk songs and drama in various cultures. It was then that media was first used to communicate messages to a wider group of people. Print media followed and then mass media and social media.

Media refers to various means of communication. It also refers to communication devices. Communication devices are used to interact and communicate among people.

The most common forms of media today are radio, internet, newspaper and television. Media is an important part of our lives. It is also two-sided meaning that it has a positive side and a negative one.

1. It educates people. Through television and radio programs, people get to learn about health matters, environmental conservation, and much more.

2. People get the latest news in a very short time. Distance is not a barrier. People get news daily through the media and this keeps them updated on the happenings around the world.

3. People get to bring out their hidden talents. Through media showcase their talents such as comedy, acting and singing.

4. Children’s knowledge increases. Children can learn from quiz programs, animal programs and so on.

5. Radio is convenient as people do get short news and with a mobile phone one can access it.

6. Great in promoting mass consumer products. This can in turn increase sales of the product.

Globalization has a great impact on the world transforming social, political, cultural, and economic spheres of life. Innovations in transportation have been complemented by the swift development of communication technologies. The 20th-century arrival of mass-circulation newspapers and magazines, film, and television further enhanced a growing consciousness of a rapidly shrinking world. Globalization transforms the economic system of the world bringing new opportunities to less developed countries; it changes cultural and political spheres popularizing democratic values and principles and promulgating the western style of life. Globalization in the media sphere is influenced by changes in political and cultural spheres bringing new economic opportunities and financial capitals to media giants. These needs lead to digitalization, consolidation, and deregulation of the media environment around the globe.

Far-reaching changes are occurring in the social, economic, and political environments, affecting the strategies, structure, and management of media business. The notion of strategic alliances in media incorporates the need for considering the current economic context affecting the firm. Media companies use strategic alliances as one of the main tactics to compete in the global media market. Strategic alliances allow media companies like AOL to meet new economic and legal challenges (MacGillivray 43). National and regional economic health and growth have become increasingly dependent upon export sales as an engine of growth and as a source of the foreign exchange necessary for the import of goods and services. In the media sector, collaborations and strategic alliances allow companies to effectively compete in today’s turbulent business environment. The future of Time Warner Inc lies in its ability to stand fast against foreign competition and to develop the goods and services that will be in demand in the twenty-first century (Osterhammel and Petersson 65). Emerging from great difficulties and embarking on an ambitious program to create products that will revolutionize entire industries, Time Warner Inc wastes no time in taking the steps necessary to seize its future. The strategy at Time Warner Inc was to develop known technologies into viable commercial products that could deliver value to customers. Thus Time Warner Inc was prepared to commence work on a project that would enhance its competitive advantage by establishing it as an industry leader in an emerging field. To be successful given this new set of ground rules, a new way of thinking must be instilled among all levels of management (Time Warner Inc Home Page 2007). This is no longer a luxury, but a necessity born out of a historically dismal track record. With each failure, the UK media sector becomes increasingly indebted and unable to compete against foreign companies. The executive must be able to create a dynamic management structure with an equal distribution of authority capable of responding to the unique requirements of combined business cultures. A shift from short- to long-term thinking when developing and implementing acquisition strategies is necessary to ensure that strategies are properly implemented before they are abandoned. This requires calculated risk-taking and, most importantly, streamlined channels of communication. The underlying argument presented is that there are significant opportunity costs associated with restructuring (Picard, 61).

Digitalization of media is caused by new technology and the availability of technological innovations in all countries. The attractiveness or the presumed merits of digitalization activity is the assumption that a given technology will enhance the growth potential of the company. Preferably, the goal is to acquire digital technology a complementary business unit with related lines of markets and products that would fit nicely into the firm’s long-term strategic direction, improving the acquiring firm’s overall growth potential and marketability (Osterhammel and Petersson 60). The selection of which company would fit best in the current corporate culture is based on many factors, and it varies from firm to firm. In fact, even firms competing within the same industry segment might have very different acquisition strategies. Media gains sustainable competitive advantage by conceiving new ways of conducting activities, employing new procedures, technologies, inputs, or channels of distribution. Managing the organization is therefore not just about managing functions, but managing linkages between those functions (Picard, 74; Time Warner Inc Home Page 2007).

Deregulation in the media industry is a result of global economic and political changes and weaknesses of international laws. For a modern state, it is difficult to control multinational media corporations and their financial flows. In order to compete in the global market and remain competitive, a media firm may choose to sell off a business unit in order to purge those divisions that exhibit either low growth potential or low relative market shares. As with the case of an acquisition, the desire is to improve the growth potential of a firm and thus its survival in the marketplace. A business unit exhibiting modest or negative cash flow and low growth potential should definitely be a candidate for divestiture. An appropriate strategy may also be to sell off businesses with high relative shares in high-growth markets to provide the necessary funding for investment in existing business units that the firm would rather concentrate its energies on. Of course, one reason for divestiture may simply be that the business unit is too expensive for the firm to fund, requiring too much cash to sustain its rate of growth (Picard 33). This type of business would also be a more attractive acquisition target. The point remains that a major motivating factor for strategic alliance activity is the potential for improved growth. The task, then, is to determine how well corporate acquirers have fared with their acquisition activities, and whether these firms have been better off from these activities (Picard, 83). In other words, how a target firm will perform in the long term and how well its corporate strategy coincides with the strategy of the acquiring company are more important than the acquired firm’s current financial performance. This is not to say that one must only locate an acquisition or alliance target that is on solid footing. Rather, it is more important to internally evaluate a firm’s internal needs and purpose before embarking on a strategy of acquisition. If the acquisition is the vehicle, it must be a structural component of the acquiring firm’s strategy. A business always has the option of expanding either internally through R&D efforts or externally through strategic alliances. If one firm acquires another and the combined entity’s returns cannot be significantly greater than the two separate companies would have been independently, then the acquisition was not based on a sound strategy.

In sum, the information mentioned above shows that globalization processes in the media industry are crucial for success and a strong market position of the media companies. Globalization involves the transfer of resources from the colonized global South in exchange for European manufactures. Developed nations spread their political system and cultural values across the globe. Like all social processes, globalization contains dimensions filled with a range of norms, claims, beliefs, and narratives about the phenomenon itself. However, it is not just rational economics that drives this selection: it helps that media organization tend to be staffed by highly trained people with an interest in new technologies, people who have been selected to embrace and develop new ideas. Of all the functions in a media organization, this is the one that should show the most natural inclination to embrace the new ideas of working within the media alliances can all be effective ways to improve the competitive position of an overall firm. However, any one of these processes must be an integral part of an ongoing corporate strategic plan. In addition, the evaluation process must shift its emphasis away from traditional financial performance criteria toward overall competitive dynamics.

Mass media plays a pivotal role in our life. Many people and businesses rely on these mediums for their day to day transactions. On the flip-side it also bombards us with too much or unwanted information. This essay will shed a light on various aspects of this issue.Newspapers, radio, television, and the Internet—including e-mail and blogs—are significantly influential on our society, especially in affirming attitudes and opinions that are already established. The news media focus the public’s attention on certain personalities and issues, leading many people to form opinions about them Mass media sets the news agenda, which shapes the public's views on what is newsworthy and important. It is a system used by advertisement agencies and media outlets, such as television channels and radio stations to "convince" their audiences to do or act in a certain way. It appeals to the vulnerability of the desired target. For instance famous person or persons who are recognized, admired by whole communities. These individuals have the "Power" to convince their followers or fans into taking any kind of action or decision. Therefore, these famous people usually are linked or work for some media outlet and are used, to influence the community accordingly. The media has changed significantly in the past years. Because of the availability of television and radio all populations and classes have been exposed to various types of media. The Internet has provided an even newer media resource. The majority of people live in a very fast paced society. They have very little time for reading and exploring the truth of information. The producers of media publication are aware of this and use the media to influence public choice and opinion. The problem lies in that many people are gullible and society as a whole is easily influenced by the media representations. The media also responds to public demand and provides the information that the public craves. A positive aspect of the media’s bias has been that it has facilitated change in people’s perception of races in a positive manner, exposed people to other cultures, made people aware of environmental needs, and the needs of people far away. While there can also be negative implications the media also has to reflect the public’s point of view. With the growing representation of Hispanics, African Americans, and other minority groups, the media is under pressure to present them in a more positive light.
