There is no doubt that kindness always wins and it has been proven time and again by people. Sid is a greedy man who does not share his wealth with anyone, not even his family members.

He also does not pay his workers well. One day, he loses his bag of gold coins and loses his temper. Everyone helps him out to search for it but no one finds it. Finally, his worker’s little son finds the bag.

Upon checking the bag, he sees all the coins are there. But, his greed makes him play a trick on the poor worker. He claims that there were more coins in the bag and the worker stole them.

The issue goes to the court and the judge confirms from Sid whether his bag had more coins to which he agrees. So, the judge rules out that as Sid’s bag had more coins , the bag which the worker’s son found is not his.

Therefore, the bag gets handed to the worker as no one else claims it. Consequently, you see how the worker’s son act of kindness won and paid him well. On the other hand, how Sid’s greediness resulted in his loss only.

How kindness fits into a happy life, a new analysis of decades of research shows that when we are kind to others, we are healthier and happier..

We all know that it’s good to be kind to others. Kindness is an important virtue for sustaining relationships, which helps to build a trusting and cooperative society.

You may have also heard that kindness makes you happier and healthier. But what does that mean for you? What acts of kindness will make us happiest, and who tends to benefit the most?

A newly published review of decades of kindness research provides some answers.

In this paper, researchers analyzed the results from 126 research articles looking at almost 200,000 participants from around the world. The studies they chose all had to meet certain criteria, such as including only adults and reporting good statistical data; some were experiments, where people did a kindness practice to observe its effects, while others just surveyed people about how kind and happy they were. The studies measured well-being in a variety of ways, including both mental and physical health.

As expected, people who were kind tended to have higher well-being. Lead researcher Bryant Hui was surprised the relationship was not stronger than it was, but he was still encouraged by the results.

“Although the overall relationship between prosocial (kind and helpful) behavior and well-being is weak, given that so many people around the world act prosocially, the modest effect can still have a significant impact at a societal level,” he says.

A small effect like this—an average of all the participants’ experiences—can sometimes hide other patterns going on below the surface. So, he and his colleagues considered when kindness might have a bigger impact on our well-being.

One thing they found was that people who performed random, informal acts of kindness, like bringing a meal to a grieving friend, tended to be happier than people who performed more formal acts of kindness, like volunteering in a soup kitchen. It’s possible that informal helping may fill our more basic psychological needs for autonomy and close relationships, which is why it could lead to greater happiness.

The researchers also found that people who were kind tended to be higher in “eudaimonic happiness” (a sense of meaning and purpose in life) more than “hedonic happiness” (a sense of pleasure and comfort). Perhaps this makes sense, given that being kind involves effort, which takes away from comfort but could make people feel better about themselves and their abilities, which would provide a sense of meaning.

Being kind came with greater eudaimonic happiness for women than for men, too. According to Hui, this could be because, in many cultures, women are expected to be kinder than men; so, they may have more to gain from it. And younger participants experienced more happiness when they were kind than older participants, perhaps for developmental reasons, he says. Younger adults are at a stage of life where they tend to be figuring out their identity and actively seeking the purpose and meaning in life that kindness can bring, less so than pleasure and comfort.

What other, specific benefits might kindness have? The researchers found that people who were kind tended to have higher self-esteem and a sense of self-efficacy. To a lesser degree, they also experienced less depression and anxiety and improved physical health—with the links to health being strongest in older adults.

Hui doesn’t know for sure why acting kind might have these different effects on different groups, but he points to theories put forth by researcher Elizabeth Midlarsky : Being kind may make us feel better about ourselves as a person or about the meaning of our lives, confirm our self-competence, distract us from our own troubles and stressors, give us a warm-glow feeling, or help us be more socially connected with others. All of these could potentially improve our well-being—reducing our stress, improving our mood, or providing community—and they could hold more importance at different stages of life, too.

By understanding the connection between kindness and well-being, Hui thinks researchers can design better studies that take into account all of the relevant factors, and innovators could create more effective kindness practices. In the future, he hopes there will be kindness apps or online programs that could reach more people, generating a larger impact around the world.

In the meantime, Hui says, the biggest take-home from his research is something he heard the Dalai Lama say long ago: “If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.”

“Helping others is a universal virtue and a very affordable and economic way to benefit others’ and our own well-being,” he says. “As the saying goes, helping others is helping yourself.”

Floyd, Lloyd, Elwood, Woodrow, and David are not historical figures, except in their native Ithaca, N.Y.; but David was my father the others my Uncles – all part of the generation who saved the world in WWII.

They were all just kids, some underage, when they volunteered for the Army Air Corp. and piloted everything from the B-17 and B-29 to the P-47 and P-51.  They flew more than 25 missions a piece as pilots and co-pilots; which far exceeded the Air Corp. standards.  The mortality rates of pilots jumped after just thirteen missions and it was almost a given that pilots flying more than 25 missions would not return.

In my book they were heroes and, as a kid, I remember hearing some of the stories.  Being a kid I especially liked the ones about them “pissing in their pants” as anti-aircraft fire was going off all around them.  It was funny to them too, since all five survived, but they never glamorized the war or thought of themselves as heroes.  There was a job to be done and they did it.

After the war they did what that generation was expected to do.  They came home, married, started families, and worked to support their families.  Even in peacetime, there was a job to be done and they did it.

My father, as many of that generation, was not openly emotional or affectionate.  He loved us and would do anything for his family, but in his own very quiet and humble way.

The only time I ever saw him break down was when my mother died.  He loved her so much and was so paralyzed by grief he could not function.  I was thirteen at the time, and the oldest, so it fell upon me make all of the funeral arrangements and to help in any way I could for the next month or so.  This time, there was a job to be done so I did it.

My father was capable of many acts of sacrifice and kindness.  Of course he never told me about them but I still hear stories about him today.

About a month ago I was standing in line at the pharmacy to pick up a prescription.  When it was my turn, I simply said “Pickup for Werner.”

This very old woman standing next to me turned and asked, “Are you Blanche’s boy?”  I told her I was and she told me how close she had been to my parents and that my father was the greatest man who ever lived.

By now, the rest of the crowd in line edged a bit closer to eavesdrop.

She went on to tell stories about my mother and father and finally asked me how I felt about my grandmother.

My grandmother was somewhat of a strict and overbearing woman who could cause a great deal of misery if she wanted to.

Once this woman, Helen, was satisfied she was not going to offend me, she almost yelled out in the store, “That Ethel could be a bitch!  Do you know your grandfather had to stop for a shot and a beer before he could go home and face her?”

After that there was no stopping her and she had certainly piqued my curiosity.  I, and the entire audience in the store, learned that one of my Uncles had fathered a number of illegitimate children both in Europe and here after the war, I apparently had numerous first cousins I was never aware of, my grandfather had a long term affair supposedly because of my grandmother, and my family history was filled with more than a few black sheep.

Now everyone, including the pharmacist, was waiting to hear what was coming next.

Helen became quiet and more introspective.  “You know,” she began, “Ethel (my mother’s mother) became very ill a few years after your mother died.”

I did remember she had a massive heart attack on the day my mother died and she was unable to attend the funeral.

“I think it was after you left for college, your father didn’t think he could care for her anymore so he was going to put her in a nursing home.”

This part I did not remember.  My grandmother was never in a nursing home.

“I remember that day,” Helen continued, “The day she was going in.  I helped your Dad get her into the car and saw them drive off.  Do you know what your father did?  He drove in through the gates of the nursing home.  He drove right past the entrance, continued around the circle, and came right back home.  He cared for Ethel for the rest of her life.”

Similar to many stories about my father, I had never heard this one before.

Growing up he would always tell us, “You are what you do, not what you say.”  He defined himself by that.  There was always a job to be done and he did it.

This is the beginning of a series of essays using the nine writing patterns of narrative , exemplification , compare/contrast , description , definition , process analysis , cause/effect , classification and division , and argumentation/persuasion .

Narrative, or narration , “wraps” the issue or thesis around a character or story.  “Acts of Kindness” is an example.  I could have written a well-researched essay about various and random acts of kindness; but which would have the desired emotional impact on an audience?  The truth is, I don’t know but I do know the audience is the final authority in terms of our work.

The writing pattern of description uses words to stimulate the senses and have the reader paint a mental picture of the scene.  Exemplification uses specific and detailed examples to clarify the thesis or argument.  Process analysis shows the audience how things work or how to do something.

To explain similarities and differences, we use the writing pattern of compare and contrast .  We spend most of our lives just trying to figure things out; and that’s when we use cause and effect analysis .  Definition gives new meaning to something misunderstood or previously unappreciated.  We use classification and division to group some things together and divide others into smaller categories.  And finally, we use argumentation and persuasion to find common ground with an opponent.

For the writer, these are the tools in our toolkit. For the reader, again the final authority, we can better serve them.  I ask my students at the beginning of each term to give us their definition of “ Effective Communication .”  They say things such as, “To better express myself,” “two people talking,” or “arguing back-and-forth.”

The real definition of Effective Communication is simply the art of being understood .

It’s not the audience’s job to figure out what we’re trying to “say.”  It’s our job to be understood.  And when we write an essay or story such as “Acts of Kindness,” it is not our job to show reality.  For most of us, the reality of our daily lives can be somewhat unpleasant.  No, it’s the writer’s job to show an interpretation of reality.  Let’s show the world what it can be like .

Compassion and the science of kindness: Harvard Davis Lecture 2015

Introduction.

The Francis Report 1 was unequivocal in its findings. The Mid Staffordshire Trust had allowed the following to happen:

‘ Patients were left in excrement in soiled bed clothes for lengthy periods ’ and ‘ Water was left out of reach’.

Robert Francis observed that:

‘ Staff treated patients and those close to them with what appeared to be callous indifference. ’

And, in conclusion, he wrote that:

‘ Patients must be the first priority in all of what the NHS does … (and) receive effective care from caring, compassionate and committed staff, working within a common culture. ’ 1

What went on in the Mid Staffs Trust is a chilling indictment of what happens when we lose sight of the importance of kindness when caring for our patients.

This lecture is about the importance of kindness in the consultation and in our relationships with others. It is based on a lecture given to RCGP Wales and is a brief synopsis of its content. Unfortunately, space does not permit a detailed examination of the key themes of the lecture. Interested readers are, therefore, invited to read the full text through the link at the end of this paper. In summary, my main contentions are that it is kindness which makes us human , builds resilience, and makes us better doctors and better people.

DEFINITIONS

Although we may not be sure exactly what kindness is, we can all recognise it when we see it! Indeed, it is often the case than nothing upsets us more than when someone is being deliberately unkind to us or others. How to define kindness?

Cole-King and Gilbert have defined compassion (or kindness) as being ‘ sensitivity to the distress of … others with a commitment to try and do something about it’. 2 The key point here is that, if we are to be kind, then not only do we need to be sensitive to the suffering of others, but we also need to make a constructive response in such circumstances. Kindness requires action.

Kindness, therefore, is not an ‘optional extra’ only to be deployed when we have sufficient time and energy, nor should it be instrumental in achieving another purpose such as meeting targets. Kindness should be central to our engagement with others (for example, in the consultation) because it is central to healing.

The RCGP motto is Cum Scientia Caritas — scientific knowledge applied with compassion. Caritas will be defined here as the open-heartedness or generosity of spirit demonstrated by a doctor or nurse when caring for a patient. It will be used synonymously with kindness, compassion, altruism, and generosity because space does not permit a more detailed exploration here.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVES

The origins of kindness lie in ‘kinship’ but over the centuries its meaning and purpose have been expressed in different ways. In the Victorian era, for example, kindness became feminised and synonymous with sentimentality. 3 The Victorian housewife became The Angel in the House 4 and men feared that too much sympathy might erode their gravitas and cloud their thinking on important matters!

Darwin, in The Descent of Man , was clear that sympathy and cooperation were innate and key to evolutionary success 5 and although Dawkins in The Selfish Gene described the ‘ gene’s law of universal ruthlessness and selfishness ’, 6 he emphasised also the crucial importance of teaching our children both generosity and altruism.

Freud described all kindness as seduction 7 and argued that it is therefore only exercised for unconscious (or conscious) ulterior motives for a specific purpose.

However, I believe that altruism remains alive and well in our society. Richard Titmuss, for example, in his classic study The Gift Relationship reported that more than 98% of blood donors give blood for someone they have never met, nor indeed are ever likely to meet. 8 The NHS itself, of course, is founded on great altruistic principles: the idea that through collective provision high-quality health care can be delivered to those who most need it, even though we will never meet those most in need of that care.

Despite all of its problems, the NHS is still loved and valued by the majority of people in this country who recognise its fundamental altruistic importance to our society.

THE NEUROSCIENCE OF KINDNESS

Ballatt and Campling in their 2011 book, Intelligent Kindness: Reforming the Culture of Healthcare , 9 summarise some of the evidence for the impact that kindness can have on our own brains. 9

For example, in altruistic individuals, increased activity in the posterior superior temporal cortex has been reported (when compared with less altruistic individuals). Individual acts of kindness release both endorphins and oxytocin, and create new neural connections. The implications for such plasticity of the brain are that altruism and kindness become self-authenticating.

In other words, kindness can become a self-reinforcing habit requiring less and less effort to exercise. Indeed, data from functional magnetic resonance (FMR) scans show that even the act of imagining compassion and kindness activates the soothing and affiliation component of the emotional regulation system of the brain. 10

There is also some evidence to link the importance of kindness with healing, and the impact of the quality of the interaction between a health professional and a patient on the placebo effect is well recognised. There are also claims of improved diagnostic accuracy associated with empathic staff — as well as an observed effect of kindness on promoting healing and reducing anxiety. In a randomised controlled trial of ‘compassionate care’ for the homeless in an emergency department, frequent attenders received either ‘usual care’ or a compassionate care ‘package’. The outcomes included fewer repeat visits and increased satisfaction with their care in the intervention group. 11

KINDNESS AND WORKLOAD

It is generally agreed that our current workload in general practice is not only unsustainable but also gradually increasing. More than 15 million of us already have long-term conditions and these account for some 70% of the NHS spend and more than 50% of all our consultations as GPs. 12

If we are to address the current workload crisis, we need to find new ways of working and the Five Year Forward View (Vanguards programme) provides us with opportunities to do this. 13 Central to the Vanguards programme is the idea of person-centred care 14 and it is my view that our most underutilised and indeed our greatest resource is the desire and willingness of our patients to contribute to their own care.

One of the key aspects of care that patients most value is that of kindness (compassion) in the consultation. However, the introduction of the Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) and the resultant emphasis on the biomedical aspects of care have made it more difficult for us to practise ‘holistic’ care and engage with our patients in a compassionate way. For example, Carolyn Chew-Graham and colleagues showed that the use of QOF patient templates during the consultation makes holistic engagement with patients more difficult. 15

In the current workload crisis do we have time for kindness?

With the rapid increase in the numbers of people with long-term conditions and the importance of supporting self-management, I wish to argue that we cannot afford not to be kind in the consultation. Being kind is what to do when ‘working harder isn’t working’. 16 It may sound counterintuitive but, actually, taking the time to be kind by engaging our patients more fully in their own care, can reduce our workload and increase our resilience. This is because our individual acts of kindness will be reciprocated by our patients, strengthening our relationship with them and improving our own wellbeing.

I believe that kindness is good for us as well as our patients, and, furthermore, kindness builds our resilience.

KINDNESS: A VIRTUOUS CYCLE

If kindness is such an important component of care, can it be taught? Gilbert has described some of the attributes and skills for compassion that are necessary for the provision of compassionate care. 17 The necessary attributes include sympathy, distress tolerance, empathy, and non-judgement, coupled with a sensitivity and care for wellbeing. Such attributes are necessary for engagement of others, and, once engaged with others, the skills of imagery, reasoning, and attention are all required.

Kindness cannot be faked — most of us will be familiar with the insincerity of the brief professional ‘half-smile’ of overworked air cabin crew, and how such insincerity undermines the trust necessary for ‘real’ kindness to be both expressed and meaningful to our patients. However, although we can identify some of the skills and attributes necessary for the expression of kindness, it is attitudinal change that is a prerequisite for the expression of kindness in the consultation; in other words, despite the efforts of some NHS management, kindness cannot be mandated.

Ballatt and Campling describe a virtuous cycle of kindness whereby kindness directs attentiveness , which in turn enables attunement , which builds trust between ourselves and our patients. 9 This trust generates a therapeutic alliance that produces better outcomes for patients. As it turns, this virtuous cycle can reduce anxiety and defensiveness, and reinforce the conditions for kindness to take place. Such cycles not only can improve the care of our patients but they also can reduce our own stress and improve our morale in the face of overwhelming demand. These virtuous cycles are the polar opposite of the ‘downward spiral’ that can arise from ‘burnout’ and overwork, in turn leading to poor morale and loss of confidence and belief in what we are doing.

Why is kindness important?

‘ Kindness (compassion) is a gift freely given by one person to another in the health service — just like anywhere else. ’ 18

Chadwick’s definition above is a good one — it gives us a pragmatic definition to underpin our care of patients. In addition, thinking of kindness as a ‘gift freely given’ often chimes with our original motivation to become doctors — that is, the desire to help and look after others. And most of us would agree that ‘ kindness encourages a feeling of aliveness and creates the kind of intimacy and involvement with other people that deep down we crave’. 3

Kindness is important for both ourselves and our patients. The Schwartz Centre for Compassionate Healthcare in Boston is named after Kenneth Schwartz, who was a healthcare lawyer with a young family who died at the age of 40 from lung cancer. He described the ordeal of his treatment as being ‘ punctuated by moments of exquisite compassion ’ and how the ‘ simple human touch from his care givers made the unbearable bearable’. 19

I believe this should resonate for all of us whether we are the recipient of acts of kindness or the person offering this gift to others. I leave you with the words of Hippocrates who knew full well the importance of kindness (comfort) when caring for our patients. He famously said that as doctors we should:

‘ Cure sometimes, treat often, and comfort always. ’

My prosocial day: implementation of kindness, prosocial behavior.

The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation allows people to share their good stories and motivate people to do them. The main goal of the movement is to make good and friendly relationships the norm in places like work, home or school (About us, n.d.). Representatives of the website claim that their content is aimed at making people understand how important it is to take care of others (About us, n.d.). It brings a lot of happiness fore society and themselves. Stories are free to access and anyone can share their experiences to teach community how to be socially emotional.

The story that has influenced me the most is called True friends, which is told by a man named Lincoln. The author talks about how, as a child, it was difficult for them to make friends and how lonely it felt (True friends, n.d.). However, later Lincoln made friends with whom they are still friends and occasionally play basketball (True friends, n.d.). The author talks about how friends care about them and always ask if everything is fine when Lincoln looks sad (True friends, n.d.). Thus, this story had a strong impact on me, because the modern world is full of cruelty and falsehood. Finding real friends who will always help is a great happiness and luck. Moreover, many children do not make friends with others for various reasons. As a result, many suffer and it is always nice to see when someone finds support in their friends.

My day of kindness and compassion was spent in stores where I bought everything I needed to please animals in shelters a little. My basic opinion has always been that man should be responsible for domesticated animals. If someone alone could not do this, then together society is capable of much. There are many shelters in the area and often they need a lot of things, food and toys to keep the animals normal. I made a shopping list and after completing it, I went to one of the shelters to hand over the purchases to its representatives.

I found out about what I need to buy on the website of the shelter, which indicates what is currently lacking for dogs. Moreover, I bought food for volunteers at the shelter, as they work hard and get tired. I helped the shelter, because it seems to me that people and the state allocate insufficient funds and attention to these organizations. Animals cannot take care of themselves and are doomed to a starving life on the street. In addition, they often find themselves in such a position because of the cruelty of people. All these thoughts led me to want to dedicate my day to helping animals. Moreover, I bought food for volunteers at the shelter, as they work hard and get tired.

Many people think that some people do good deeds out of vanity and a desire to appear better than they are. I don’t agree with this and helped the animal shelter not out of a search for fame, but compassion. Cages and volunteers will never replace a home with a loving family for animals. The realization of this made me sad and sorry, but when I realized that I could make their life even a little better, I was delighted.

The strongest feelings were pride in myself when I realized how simple and important it is to help those who are weaker. In a moment, I felt absolute happiness and joy that I could make the world a little better. Thanks to this reaction, when others are happy and oneself is happy from this, the desire to help others has become stronger. In addition, it is important to understand that the reaction of others is important and has a strong influence.

The whole family supported the decision to purchase needs for animals and was delighted with my mood and idea. For me, this was vital, because I wanted to share my slavery with my loved ones, and their attitude gave me strength. In addition, I was extremely pleased with the reaction of employees and volunteers when I arrived with purchases. They thanked me for a long time and showed me how they do their job.

As part of prosocial behavior, people care about the feelings, issues, rights, and well-being of others. My family has always told me to take care of those who are unable to take care of themselves. When I was little, we volunteered with animals and poor people. Thus, from this exercise, I realized that the motivation of people to do good deeds directly depends on what their parents invested in them in childhood.

However, the desire to help others can be cultivated in adulthood. At the shelter, I met enough older people who started volunteering in middle age or after retirement. This is an amazing experience that shows that the desire to do good comes from the depths of the soul. Perhaps it fades into the background with time and people do not have enough strength for something other than themselves or family, but as my experience has shown, people will return to this one day. I do not always have the opportunity to set aside a whole day to help others, but if I succeed, then I feel good and strong, despite the fatigue. Thus, based on this exercise, I believe that the happiness of others makes the world around you brighter.

Religion has always guided people and helped them to do good deeds. As a Christian, from my childhood I watched helping those in need and participated in many charitable acts. My faith is based on the fact that a person cannot pass by the misfortune of another. The Bible says: “finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous” (Peter 3:8). God calls for people to be good-natured and not leave their neighbors alone with their problems.

My Christian upbringing tells me that people can be cruel. However, if you have a lot of goodness and love inside, helping others is an expression of your attitude towards the Lord. Moreover, Christianity constantly proclaims inner harmony as a necessity. This state is achieved not through worldly entertainment, but by service to the benefit of society. I use faith to not be afraid of being judged or not understanding why I aid others. It gives me strength, even if someone does not agree with my lifestyle. In conclusion, my pro-social day made me feel stronger and more aware of the happiness that comes from helping other people.

The story of the Good Samaritan is a well-known parable about kindness from the New Testament of the Bible, specifically found in the Gospel of Luke, chapter 10, verses 25-37. 

Luke 10:25-37 25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?” 27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’[a]; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b]” 28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.” 29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Summary of The Parable of the Good Samaritan

A man is traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho. Along the way, he is attacked by robbers who strip him of his clothing, beat him, and leave him half-dead on the side of the road. As the injured man lies there, a priest passes by but deliberately avoids him. Then a Levite, who holds a religious role, also passes by without helping the wounded man.

However, a Samaritan, a member of a group that was historically despised by Jews, comes across the injured man. Despite the historical animosity between Samaritans and Jews, the Samaritan is filled with compassion. He tends to the man’s wounds, pouring oil and wine on them to disinfect and soothe, and he bandages them. He then places the injured man on his own donkey and takes him to an inn.

At the inn, the Samaritan continues to care for the man. He pays the innkeeper and instructs him to look after the man. He assures the innkeeper that he will cover any additional expenses that may arise during the man’s recovery.

Jesus concludes the parable by asking the religious expert which of the three individuals—priest, Levite, or Samaritan—acted as a neighbor to the wounded man. The religious expert answers, “The one who had mercy on him.”

The story of Rahab hiding the Israelite spies is found in the Book of Joshua in the Old Testament of the Bible, specifically in Joshua chapter 2. 

Joshua 2 Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two spies from Shittim. “Go, look over the land,” he said, “especially Jericho.” So they went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab and stayed there. 2 The king of Jericho was told, “Look, some of the Israelites have come here tonight to spy out the land.” 3 So the king of Jericho sent this message to Rahab: “Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, because they have come to spy out the whole land.” 4 But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. She said, “Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they had come from. 5 At dusk, when it was time to close the city gate, they left. I don’t know which way they went. Go after them quickly. You may catch up with them.” 6 (But she had taken them up to the roof and hidden them under the stalks of flax she had laid out on the roof.) 7 So the men set out in pursuit of the spies on the road that leads to the fords of the Jordan, and as soon as the pursuers had gone out, the gate was shut. 8 Before the spies lay down for the night, she went up on the roof 9 and said to them, “I know that the Lord has given you this land and that a great fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you. 10 We have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea[a] for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, whom you completely destroyed.[b] 11 When we heard of it, our hearts melted in fear and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below. 12 “Now then, please swear to me by the Lord that you will show kindness to my family, because I have shown kindness to you. Give me a sure sign 13 that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them—and that you will save us from death.” 14 “Our lives for your lives!” the men assured her. “If you don’t tell what we are doing, we will treat you kindly and faithfully when the Lord gives us the land.” 15 So she let them down by a rope through the window, for the house she lived in was part of the city wall. 16 She said to them, “Go to the hills so the pursuers will not find you. Hide yourselves there three days until they return, and then go on your way.” 17 Now the men had said to her, “This oath you made us swear will not be binding on us 18 unless, when we enter the land, you have tied this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and unless you have brought your father and mother, your brothers and all your family into your house. 19 If any of them go outside your house into the street, their blood will be on their own heads; we will not be responsible. As for those who are in the house with you, their blood will be on our head if a hand is laid on them. 20 But if you tell what we are doing, we will be released from the oath you made us swear.” 21 “Agreed,” she replied. “Let it be as you say.” So she sent them away, and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord in the window. 22 When they left, they went into the hills and stayed there three days, until the pursuers had searched all along the road and returned without finding them. 23 Then the two men started back. Summary of Rahab and the Spies

As the Israelites, led by Joshua, prepared to enter the land of Canaan to take possession of it, they sent two spies ahead to gather information about the city of Jericho, which was one of the fortified cities in Canaan. The spies entered Jericho and lodged at the house of a woman named Rahab.

Rahab was a prostitute and likely an innkeeper. She had heard about the mighty deeds of the Israelites and their God, and she believed that their conquest of Canaan was imminent. Recognizing the strength of the Israelite God, she made a decision that would change her life and the course of the story.

The king of Jericho learned about the presence of the spies in the city and sent soldiers to Rahab’s house to capture them. Rahab, however, hid the spies on her roof and misled the soldiers by telling them that the spies had already left the city. She then negotiated with the spies, making a pact with them. In exchange for saving their lives, she asked that her family be spared when the Israelites attacked Jericho.

The spies agreed to Rahab’s terms and gave her a scarlet cord to hang from her window, indicating that her house should be spared when the city was captured. They instructed her to gather her family inside her house, and they assured her that as long as the scarlet cord was visible, her household would be safe.

When the Israelites eventually conquered Jericho, they marched around the city walls for seven days, and on the seventh day, the walls of Jericho miraculously fell down. Rahab and her family were spared, as promised. They were brought out of the city and placed in a safe location outside the camp of Israel.

3. Pharaoh’s Daughter

The next Bible story about kindness is that of Pharaoh’s daughter. It is mentioned in the Old Testament of the Bible, specifically in the Book of Exodus chapter 2, verses 5-10. 

Exodus 2:5-10 5 Then Pharaoh’s daughter went down to the Nile to bathe, and her attendants were walking along the riverbank. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her female slave to get it. 6 She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him. “This is one of the Hebrew babies,” she said. 7 Then his sister asked Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?” 8 “Yes, go,” she answered. So the girl went and got the baby’s mother. 9 Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this baby and nurse him for me, and I will pay you.” So the woman took the baby and nursed him. 10 When the child grew older, she took him to Pharaoh’s daughter and he became her son. She named him Moses, saying, “I drew him out of the water.”

Summary of The Story of Pharaoh’s Daughter and Moses

The story begins during a time when the Israelites were enslaved in Egypt under the rule of a Pharaoh who felt threatened by the growing number of Israelites. In an attempt to control their population, he ordered that all Hebrew male babies be killed.

During this period, a Hebrew woman gave birth to a son named Moses. Fearing for his life, she placed him in a basket made of reeds and set it afloat on the Nile River, hoping that he might be spared. Moses’ sister, Miriam, watched from a distance to see what would happen to her baby brother.

Coincidentally, Pharaoh’s daughter happened to be at the river at that moment. She noticed the basket among the reeds and sent her maids to retrieve it. Upon opening the basket, she found the baby Moses and was moved with compassion and kindness. Recognizing that the child was a Hebrew, she decided to adopt him as her own son.

Miriam, seizing the opportunity, approached Pharaoh’s daughter and offered to find a Hebrew woman to nurse the baby. Pharaoh’s daughter agreed, and Miriam brought Moses’ biological mother to nurse and care for him.

The story of kindness found in Matthew 26:6-13 is about a woman who anoints Jesus with expensive perfume. This event takes place shortly before Jesus’ crucifixion and is recorded in the New Testament of the Bible.

Matthew 26:6-13: 6 While Jesus was in Bethany in the home of Simon the Leper, 7 a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the table. 8 When the disciples saw this, they were indignant. “Why this waste?” they asked. 9 “This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor.” 10 Aware of this, Jesus said to them, “Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 11 The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have me. 12 When she poured this perfume on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial. 13 Truly I tell you, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”

Summary of the Woman Who Poured Perfume on Jesus

In this passage, Jesus is in Bethany, a village near Jerusalem, and is dining at the home of Simon the Leper. During the meal, a woman enters with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume. She breaks the jar and pours the perfume over Jesus’ head. This act of anointing was a sign of honor and respect, often done for guests or individuals of importance.

7. Joseph of Arimathea

Naomi Shihab Nye is an American poet, songwriter, and children’s fiction writer. She was born in 1952 in St. Louis to an American mother and a Palestinian refugee father. Her father left Palestine in 1948, shortly before Nye’s birth. His experiences and culture went on to inform much of Nye’s later work.

When she was a teenager, Nye and her family moved to San Antonio, Texas. Although Nye has traveled extensively throughout her career, San Antonio remains her home. She studied at Trinity University, Texas, and later went on to teach creative writing at Texas State University. Her first full-length poetry collection, Different Ways to Pray , explores the intersections of opposing cultures. Later collections included On the Edge of the Sky , Hugging the Jukebox , Yellow Glove , and Fuel . After the 9/11 attacks in New York, she released 19 Varieties of Gazelle: Poems of the Middle East to address the stigma and misrepresentations that arose around Arab American people. Nye has also written books for children, released a collection of essays, and edited several poetry anthologies.

By having something precious and then losing it, one is able to see how empty the world can be without kindness in it. When one is in the midst of loss, the days seem to go on forever, and nothing changes. The speaker continues, explaining that true kindness can’t be comprehended without understanding that death comes for everyone, regardless of how much one prepares for the road ahead. Death’s reality should make readers aware of their own mortality, and the fragility of their life, in a new way.

What Blocking Emergency Abortion Care in Idaho Means for Doctors Like Me

O n April 24, the Supreme Court will hear arguments weighing whether Idaho politicians have the power to block doctors from giving emergency medical care to patients experiencing pregnancy complications—a case that will open the door for other states to prohibit emergency reproductive care and worsen medical infrastructure for people across the board. Once again, politicians have set up a case that could have devastating impacts on the ability of doctors to provide--and for pregnant women to receive--essential reproductive health care.

I’m a family physician who’s practiced medicine in rural Idaho for more than 20 years, where I’ve had the opportunity to guide hundreds of patients through their pregnancies. It’s no exaggeration when I say that my state’s health care system is in crisis, thanks in enormous part to our near-total abortion ban. Now, instead of trying to salvage what’s left, Idaho politicians are looking to hasten our downward spiral, making it even harder for doctors like me to provide care to patients in need. I can only hope that the Court will take into account that it’s not just abortion at stake in this case—it’s the future of emergency room care and medicine altogether.  

Rural health care has always faced challenges, but in the nearly two years since the overturning of Roe v. Wade , it’s gotten exponentially worse. In Idaho, we’ve lost nearly a quarter of our obstetricians since the state’s abortion ban went into effect—colleagues and friends who got into medicine to help people are being forced out of practicing obstetrics in our state. They realized it was impossible to provide adequate care while under the thumb of politicians more interested in advancing their extremist agenda than protecting the health of their constituents.

Idaho’s abortion ban makes it a crime for anyone to perform or assist with performing an abortion in nearly all circumstances. The ban does not even include an exception for when a person’s health is at risk—only for when a doctor determines that an abortion is necessary to prevent the pregnant person’s death. Ask any doctor and they'll tell you that this "exception" leads to more questions than answers.

Patients need an emergency abortion for a wide range of circumstances, including to resolve a health-threatening miscarriage. But there is no clear-cut legal definition under the ban of what exactly that looks like or when we can intervene, and doctors—operating under the threat of prosecution—have no choice but to err on the side of caution.

“Can I continue to replace her blood loss fast enough? How many organ systems must be failing? Can a patient be hours away from death before I intervene, or does it have to be minutes?” These are the callous questions doctors are now forced to think through, all the while our patient is counting on us to do the right thing and put their needs first.

As a result, pregnant patients sometimes make repeated trips to the ER because they’re told time and time again that nothing can be done for them until their complications get more severe. Imagine if someone you love had a 104-degree fever but you were told nothing could be done until it spiked to 106 and your organs were failing. Requiring patients to get right up to the point of no return before administering care is not sound medical policy—it’s naked cruelty, and it’s only going to get worse as long as we allow extremism, not science, to run rampant in our statehouses and trample over our safe system of care.

It also violates a longstanding federal law—the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA)—that requires hospitals to treat emergencies before they become life-threatening. That’s exactly why the U.S. Department of Justice sued Idaho soon after the state’s abortion ban took effect. The lawsuit argues only that Idaho must allow doctors to provide abortions in medical emergencies when that is the standard stabilizing care, but even that proved too much for state leaders.

Instead, Idaho politicians fought the DOJ all the way up to the Supreme Court. How the Supreme Court rules will have broad implications that will reverberate throughout the country. If the Court holds that federal law no longer protects pregnant people during emergencies, it will give anti-abortion politicians across the country the green light to deny essential abortion care, push providers to leave states where the choices made with their patients can be second-guessed by prosecutors, and continue this cycle of inhumanity for patients. 

As we’ve seen in Idaho, policies guided by anti-abortion extremism make health care worse for everyone. This assault on abortion has not ended with abortion—rather, it has extended to more of our rights and health care, with birth control , IVF , prescription drugs , and now emergency medical care all at risk.  

This must stop. 

For nearly 40 years, federal law has guaranteed that patients have access to necessary emergency care, including when a pregnancy goes horribly wrong. The Supreme Court must uphold this law and ensure pregnant people continue to get the care they need when they need it most. The health of my patients in West Central Idaho—and millions of other Americans across the country—deserve nothing less.
