Graphic Design Personal Statement

Graphic Design is always around us, and learning how to communicate in a visual manner has inspired me to learn more about the subject. The words ‘create’ and ‘ design ’ have always sparked a sense of enthusiasm and excitement within me. From an early age I have always had a creative characteristic which I feel is my most dominant. For many years I have enjoyed designing logos, packaging and coming up with creative campaign concepts. Since learning that Graphic Design is something that I’m driven towards I have gained an interest and spectrum of knowledge about graphic designers such as Milton Glaser, Herb Lubalin and Paul Rand. Their works have inspired me to develop my own skills and have given me an insight as to how to establish a creative mind-set.

Working within the Communications and PR, Film and Graphic Design Departments at Imperial College whilst on work experience, I was able to explore different ways of communicating through social media, film and print design. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Graphic Design team where I was able to see how various software’s were used to develop banners for the university fair.

During my placement I learnt how fundamental research is and how it is conducted during the whole design process. After the placement I was more decisive about wanting to delve into the world of Graphic Design, hence I set about finding a work placement that solely focused on Graphic Design. My second placement was at Virgin Media, where I worked with graphic designers and UX designers and was introduced to the field of digital design. I attended meetings where briefs were being discussed and was able to follow the journey of the graphic designers to witness how they went about delivering the brief; and helping design assets for the website. The placement allowed me to comprehend what digital design consisted of and learn about the works of alternative designers such as UX designers. My enthusiasm for Graphic Design made me want to expand my knowledge, hence I took a Graphic Design course at Central Saint Martins. The course was completely different to my professional work placements. The course prohibited the use of computers and all artefacts were formulated from research trips and materials; making me realise the extent of graphic design. The manner in which I worked was refreshing from constantly collaborating with software. After the course I was able to understand that there are various methods of communicating which do not involve software. In my free time I self-teach myself Photoshop and Illustrator through tutorials. I also enjoy self-initiating briefs for myself, as well as briefs set by agencies such as D&AD, RSA and YCN which provide me with a creative challenge. For example I have ‘restyled street style’ for ASOS, which was a brief set by D&AD. I also voluntarily design logos for businesses, go to contemporary galleries, the Barbican Centre, research trips for my creative briefs and work on my briefs.

I also look forward to the annual London Design Week, where I have become educated about designers and new design processes and am able to draw inspiration upon. I have volunteered helping teach 6-9 year olds at my community art club, which I attended for 3 years. I have achieved the Bronze D of E, had a part time job for one year at a high end retail store and was part of my local netball club where I trained and competed. Completing these activities has enabled me develop a strong sense of co-operation, teamwork, good social skills and commitment which would greatly benefit me whilst studying a degree. I try to seek all possible opportunities to help me advance my skills in Graphic Design, and feel that having the opportunity to take my admiration of design to degree level would be extremely rewarding. I’m self-motivated and eager to start devoting my time and attention to Graphic Design, and am positive university will help me excel in what I like doing best.

Now that you know what a personal statement is, let’s look at some things you can do to help you write a personal statement. 

The best personal statements are the ones that have been planned out thoroughly. Your personal statement should have a clear structure to it. However, before you can plan what you are going to include, you need to reflect on your life. 

You need to be able to take the time to reflect on your life experiences and what makes you a unique candidate for the internship.

You should go back to the description of the internship and ask yourself what they need that you’ve got to offer. You should think about what you’ve got but they don’t realize they need it. 

If you are struggling with what makes you stand out, then you can ask some of your family and friends. Discuss what qualities they think make you a great candidate for the internship. 

Once you have an idea of what you want to write about to sell yourself, then you can move on to formatting your personal statement.

Personal statements tend to have the same format. They often start with an introduction, then a few main body paragraphs that discuss your skills, experience, knowledge, and how they relate to the internship you are applying for.

Then you might want to include a paragraph of your future goal in relation to your career and link how this internship will help you achieve your goals.

The point of a personal statement is to prove to the employer that you are worthy of a place on this internship. If you are not being truthful or genuine in your statement then you are proving that you are not worthy of a place. 

You might be tempted to include skills that you haven’t developed yet because those skills seem easy to learn. However, if you do get through to the next stage, then you might be required to demonstrate those skills. This will only reflect poorly on you.

The last thing you want to do for a personal statement is to talk about yourself for pages and pages. This will not leave a good impression of you on your employer. Instead, you want to be selective about what you include in your personal statement.

I have always been my own boss. From self-learning graphic design, starting in third grade, to practicing graphic design for clubs and organizations under my digression. I have been lucky enough to work for mainly myself and, when working for others, have had to cater to exclusively my taste—my experience in doing graphic design for teams has in the past been limited to making a design I like, requesting approval with little to no necessary revisions, and finally sending the design to its final destination.

Working with the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce this summer was my first time practicing graphic design for someone else. While my personal taste and graphical flare were still appreciated and encouraged, my mentor, LeAnne Gaydos, Program Manager of the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce, called the final shots.

This report details my experiences working as a graphic design intern (with a boss) in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic and its associated restrictions. Below is a table of contents of sorts to acquaint you with this report.

Our Opportunity:

Are you looking for a Summer Internship where you can have a real impact on a growing company in sports and entertainment?

The FOCO Internship Program offers an immersive experience for aspiring professionals. Designed for undergraduates, this program provides a structured framework for skill development and industry exposure. Interns will have the opportunity to collaborate with seasoned professionals, contribute to meaningful projects, and gain invaluable insights into various aspects of the sports and athletic industry. Providing mentorship and training, the program aims to develop talent and prepare students for successful careers.

The summer program runs for a minimum commitment of 10 weeks . Opportunities may be available in a variety of departments including but not limited to: Sales, Customer Service, Human Resources, Technology, Marketing, Social Media, Supply Chain, Logistics, Human Resources, Analytics, and Finance. Most opportunities are based out of our Piscataway, New Jersey office.

The Role And What You’ll Do

• Create visually impactful decks for pre-sale pitches, campaign recaps, and internal strategy presentations.
• Develop static graphics and design series thumbnail images that align with the brand’s guidelines.
• Incorporate feedback and revisions from stakeholders to create polished and professional presentations.
• Assist in design and execution in a variety of quick requests to understand marketing needs: Social, Banners, layout, flyers, image cropping, and more
• Manage and Build out a digital Brand Guideline refresh project
• Captivate our audience with design that elevates visual appearance and ensures brand coherence
• Work within our brand guidelines to create layouts that promote FOCO style and voice through visual touch points
• Take direction from our Creative Manager on a variety of projects, and demonstrate your value by contributing to team discussions around vision, ideation, design, and execution
• Assists Designer to develop specific classifications within the FOCO line for upcoming season(s).
• Assists Designer in researching fashion trends that will translate for the Tommy Bahama guest.
• Prepares presentation boards as needed.
• Assists in creating Illustrator Sketches for garment styling and updates as necessary for Tech Packs.

Criteria & Eligibility Requirements:

• Design, Creative, Fine Arts, Advertising major or other programs relevant to graphic design and creative services. Junior or Senior level preferred
• Enrollment in an accredited undergraduate or graduate program at a college or university.
• Strong academic performance, often with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher.
• Relevant coursework or major related to the internship field.
• Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite
• Computer literate in Mac environment
• Some previous work experience (part-time, internship or volunteer) related to the department(s) of interest is strongly preferred.
• Depending on the internship, specific technical skills or certifications may be required.
• A genuine passion for sports and sports merchandise.
• Legal authorization to work in the United States, typically for U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or individuals with the necessary work visas.

Do you want to help with promoting online campaigns and designing advertisements and projects to generate public engagement?

As an MRC Marketing intern, you will gain valuable experience in communications, database marketing and analytics, social media, direct response marketing, and web/graphic design. Our internships pay $12/hr

Check with your school’s Internship Coordinator BEFORE accepting the hiring offer to determine if this position satisfies the criteria for receiving academic credit.

Qualifications of an MRC Marketing intern:

• Experience in graphic design
• Experience using Adobe Creative Suite
• Knowledge of current state of politics/conservatism is a plus

The Media Research Center is a 501(c)3 research and education organization that has been the nation’s premier media watchdog since 1987. We are committed to neutralizing left-wing bias in the news media and popular culture. We do this through journalism (CNSNews.com), analysis and research (NewsBusters), blogs and video (MRCTV), and a complex grassroots and marketing initiative. Because we are a nonprofit, we are careful about our resources, and one of our greatest resources is a team of interns who are excited to learn and promote our work.

This internship is designed for conservative-minded students and recent graduates. We hire interns during three semesters (Fall, Spring, Summer). The current application is for our Summer internship program . Our internship for the Sumer 2024 session begins on May 20th and runs through August 9th.
