My Family Tree Essay Example

Culture. It plays a huge role in our lives. It impacts the way that we live our lives in many ways. The clothes we wear, what we believe in, what kinds of foods we eat, and what languages we speak. Culture can also be greatly affected by where you live. That being said, some people associate with other cultures more than the ones they were brought up in and end changing the way they live their lives later on.

I have a very diverse ethnic background. As a result of this, I have been influenced by multiple cultures, been given me the chance to see multiple ways of living. I am Swedish, Chinese, German, and African American. To be exact about percentages, I am half Caucasian, a quarter Chinese, and a quarter African American. My father is half Chinese, half Swedish, and my mother is half German, and half African American. Like the main character in the example story, I feel a little bit out of place sometimes because the color of my skin suggests that I am just Caucasian and nothing else. Most of my other family members look different from me. Also like the character from the story, I have learned that it is not about how you look on the outside, but about your culture on the inside. I have learned to not let people’s thoughts and opinions affect and shape me as a person.

An object that I believe represents one of my cultures is chopsticks. It is a little bit of a weird item, but I am a quarter Chinese, and chopsticks are a big part of Chinese culture. My parents have owned two restaurants. One of them was a Chinese restaurant. I grew up eating a lot of Chinese food, and because of this, it is one of my favorite things to eat. I have always loved Chinese food, and my favorite is called Dim Sum. it consists of a lot of dumplings and bows, which I personally find to be delectable. When I was first learning how to use chopsticks, like many people I was not very good at it. I actually have a memory from when I was younger about chopsticks:I was eating sushi with my chopsticks and I accidentally dropped the sushi into the soy sauce. From the impact, several drops of soy sauce flew into the air and unfortunately landed on my white shirt. It did not turn out well for the shirt, but it was still a fond memory for me of eating sushi with my family.

I have also noticed that the culture seems to vary based on where you live. For example, I moved out here to Hawaii a short time ago, back in early June. I have not been out here for very long, but I have already noticed some big cultural differences between Hawaii, and where I had previously lived my whole life in the San Francisco Bay Area. Obviously they are very different because my previous hometown was a very urban area, and I now live in an area that is much more rural.

It seemed as if people in the Bay Area were more judgmental about things, whereas people out here seem to be a bit chiller. It also seems that where I am now in Hawaii, people seem to be less concerned by how much money you have, and the families appear to be closer and more tightly bonded. I do believe that this has to do with the fact that before I lived in the city, and now I live in the country. This shows that there are big cultural differences based on where you live. I have been influenced and affected by many different cultures in my lifetime. I have experienced new cultures since moving here to the beautiful state of Oahu, and I believe that all of these cultural experiences throughout my life have shaped who I am as a person today.

How families are like trees – a metaphor still used today

I love family trees. One can gather so much information from them if they have been done correctly. And if there are blanks, that just means there is so much more to research and discover – so many opportunities to disappear down multitudes of rabbit holes. Bliss!

“Like a tree, a family is born, flourishes, branches out, and withers. This metaphor haunted pictorial representations of kinship for centuries until it finally assumed the fixed image of ‘the family tree’,” so writes Christiane Klapisch- Zuber in an essay about the origins of the family tree as we know it today. [1] I guess some families, just as some trees, take longer than others to either flourish or wither. According to Klapisch-Zuber, family trees did not begin to be produced in the form we would recognise today until the 15 th century, becoming the fashion, especially among European influential families, in the second half of the 16 th century. This was despite families and trees having been compared to each other in a genealogical sense for some time before that.

In fact, according to Klapisch-Zuber, the last years of the 12 th century saw genealogy become the most accurate way of maintaining not only the memory of one’s ancestors, but also the reputation of one’s family line. The recording of one’s genealogy also provided a means of distributing property – naturally only through the male line.

The picture above shows an early version of the Fircks family tree. It has been taken from the genealogical record of the von Fircks family compiled by my cousin Wolf Lackschewitz. Thanks to the research and work undertaken by Wolf, who has since passed away, I have a wonderful insight into my paternal family history. The inscription underneath translates to: The family tree submitted by Christopher I (died 1649) at the time of registration for the 1620 matriculation (register). The original can be found in the Herder Institute in Marburg, Germany. It is the earliest depiction of the Fircks family tree that I know of. I just wish I could read the names on it!

Christopher I is one of my direct ancestors. It was his father Jürgen (or Georg) who originally bought the village of Nurme and built the family estate Nurmhusen, which I have previously written about here. Christopher was the eldest child of Jürgen and his second wife Elizabeth who died in 1570. I cannot find a birth date for Christopher, but apparently the first mention of him was in 1582. He inherited Nurmhusen after his father died in 1600.

I doubt the wording under the family tree means matriculation in the sense of schooling as we would think of it. In October of 1620, the von Fircks family, with Christopher as its head, was listed in the Kurland Electoral Register of the Nobility – and I believe this is the reason he had to produce the family tree.

From the family tree I have created, I identified a number of diseases among themembers of my family. The most recurrent is high blood pressure and colon diseases. Among two other members of the family, there are cases of allergic reactionsto various allergens. There are some family members who have asthma and skin allergies. One member of the family also has a heart disease. Another member of the family has osteoporosis while another has asthma. Most of these illnesses have a hereditary connotation and may indicate the likelihood of me developing them in the future.

Diabetes occurs when the body’s blood sugar level is too high. Diabetes occurs when the body fails to produce insulin, hormone required to break down glucose to form energy to power the body. In this instance glucose stays in the body and does not reach the cells. There are two types of diabetes the first type is diabetes mellitus in which the body fails to produce any insulin to break down glucose in the body. The other type of diabetes is diabetes insipidus in which the body over time fails to produce enough insulin to break down sugar. Diabetes does not have a clear hereditary pattern but some people are born susceptible to develop it. Some people develop antibodies that attack cells in the pancreas that detect the presence of sugar and trigger the body to produce insulin. Such predisposing factors are dependent on family history. Changes in the environment and lifestyle have also been linked with diabetes. My family history of diabetes makes me susceptible to contracting the disease. In order to reduce the risk of developing this disease, it is important to be watchful of the things that one eats and the type of lifestyle they lead diabetes is not treatable but it can be controlled. Unmanaged, it is a fatal disease hence the need to protect yourself from it.

Among many of the family members too, there are many cases of allergic reactions. Allergies occur as a result of the body’s immune system reacting to introduction of foreign objects to the body. The body produces antibodies to help fight disease causing organisms. Sometimes, the body identifies substances that are not harmful as harmful and proceeds to make antibodies needlessly. The immune system react differently to different allergens: maybe by theskin getting inflamed; or sinuses; orinflammation in the digestive system. The severity of allergies varies between people. Allergies are also very common in children and in people who have asthma or any other allergic reaction. Heredity is a risk factor for allergies. Additionally, living in an environment that predisposes one to allergens makes the occurrence of allergies all the more likely. I already have allergic reactions to various substance. This is probably on account of the presence of allergic complications in the family. My nieces and nephews have also shown cases of allergic reactions to a number of things. In order to reduce the risk of experiencing the allergies.

One member of the family also has osteoporosis. This is a disease that causes the bones to become weak and brittle so much so that even mild stress like coughing can have adverse effects like fracture. Osteoporosis occurs when the level at which bones are disintegrated is slower than the level at which they are made. There are some risk factors associated with osteoporosis that are beyond the control of the patient. These include the gender of the person in that women stand a greater risk to develop the illness than men. Additionally, the older the person grows, the thinner the bones becomes hence the higher the chances of developing osteoporosis. Heredity may also be a contributing factor towards the disease. Considering the fact that heredity can affect the development of the disease, there is a chance of me developing it. The disease shows in relatives of the first degree and had an early onset. In order to reduce the chances of developing the disease, it is important to keep bones strong and increase the intake of calcium everyday so that the bones develop strong and less likely to stop regenerating.

American history is often recounted through major events. But every family has its own stories, moments that were perhaps never recorded in a history book — the purchase of a home, a hometown disaster, a death, a move — yet speak to the events that define the United States.

Times Opinion wants to know about the story, whether passed down through generations at family gatherings or something shared quietly, that has influenced choices you or your family has made.

It doesn’t matter how small or how specific to your family, or how much the story has become myth as much as fact: We want to hear the story that your family has passed on from generation to generation.

In 300 words or less, tell us a story about a moment that significantly shaped your family’s history.
