“What movie should I watch to improve my English?”

How many times have you asked yourself that question?

In this post I'll recommend 20 movies for English learners.

But before I do that, let me tell you that if you're a movie lover who wants to improve your English skills through movies, you MUST check out Cara Leopold's website .

That said, let's dive into the 20 best movies for English learners.

1. forrest gump (1994).

“Forrest Gump” is one of my favourite movies. I watched it when I was a child, when I was a teenager and I watched it last week too. 

This is a heartwarming and iconic film that will take you on a journey through the extraordinary life of Forrest Gump, the main character played by a young Tom Hanks. 

The plot unfolds as Forrest tells his life story to strangers while sitting on a park bench.

You’ll see Forrest being bullied, becoming a ping pong champion, falling in love, fighting in the Vietnam War, running nonstop around the world and embarking on many other amazing adventures.

The movie is set in Alabama, US, so the characters speak with a southern American accent. I don’t think you’ll have a lot of trouble understanding Forrest as he speaks slowly and uses simple language. 

In general, the dialogues contain a lot of common phrases in English that can be useful to improve your conversational English skills . 

The story also covers important events, so you can learn about the history and culture of the US while practicing your listening skills.

Highly recommended.

2.The Lion King (1994)

I’m sure you’ve already seen this movie. “The Lion King” is one of the most popular animated movies by Walt Disney.

The main character is Simba, a young lion who goes through a lot of adventures to become king. You’ll meet his girlfriend, friends, family members and enemies.

All of them are animals, of course. In fact, you’ll only see animals from Africa in the film: lions, zebras, hyenas, monkeys, tucans, warthogs, meerkats, and many others.

What makes it a good movie for learning English? It’s animated, so you’ll be able to match characters and actions with the dialogue. This can also help you understand the story even if there are some words you don't know.

And if you’re up for an extra challenge, you can go to the theatre to see the musical . I saw it in London in December 2022 and will never forget it!

3.The Truman Show (1998)

If you're learning English, “The Truman Show” is a movie you should definitely check out. 

You’ll see a guy named Truman, played by Jim Carrey, who discovers that his whole life is actually a TV show. Everyone around him is acting and nothing is real.

How would you react if you found out your best friend has been following a script? I’d be devastated! 

The story is interesting and funny (the best Jim Carrey from the 90s is the main character – how could this movie not be funny?!). 

It’s a thought-provoking movie too as it delves into the ethical implications of manipulating someone's life for entertainment.

“The Truman Show” was released in 1998 but the theme is still very much relevant today. There’s definitely a lot that this movie will make you think about.

But what about the language? Since it all revolves around Truman's life being broadcasted on TV, you’ll get exposed to a lot of everyday expressions and hear people talking like they would in real life. 

That's super helpful for expanding your colloquial English.

4.Big Fish (2003)

“Big Fish” is a movie by Tim Burton, a renowned film director in the US. 

Picture this: there's a guy named Will, played by Ewan McGregor, who goes to see his dying father, Edward. The storyline unfolds as Will grapples with his father's wild and unbelievable stories about his life.

The cool thing for you as a learner is that this movie is narrated. You’ll hear Edward talking about his adventures in a slow and clear way. This can give you a break from speedy conversations. 

Just a heads up, though: Edward has a bit of a different accent because he's from Alabama in the southern U.S. It might sound a bit strange at first, but don't worry – you'll get used to it as you watch.

5. Stranger Than Fiction (2006)

In this film, you’ll follow Harold Crick, played by Will Ferrell. Harold is just a regular tax man with a pretty ordinary life. But one day, he starts hearing a voice. Not just any voice – it's a voice narrating every little thing he does. 

Imagine someone narrating your morning routine. How annoying would that be? Incredibly annoying if you’re a person like my partner: she hates people in the morning!

Like “Big Fish”, the cool part for you as a learner is that when Emma Thompson, the narrator, talks about Harold's actions, she speaks slowly and clearly. 

This is like a helpful English lesson within the movie as you can associate the language of the narrator with the actions of the actor.

If you're up for a quirky and interesting story that also helps you with your English, “Stranger Than Fiction” is definitely the way to go.

6. Cast Away (2006)

In “Cast Away”, Tom Hanks plays Chuck Noland, a guy who works for FedEx and travels the world. Chuck's life takes a dramatic turn when his plane crashes somewhere in the South Pacific.

Don’t worry, Chuck doesn’t die. But he finds himself on this deserted island. 

“Who’s he going to talk to? Is this a silent film?” you may wonder.

It’s not. Chuck has a talking buddy: his name is Wilson. The problem, however, is that Wilson can’t talk. Not because he has some sort of speech problems but because he doesn’t have a mouth. Wilson is a volleyball.

Can you guess why this is an awesome movie for you as a learner? For a big chunk of the movie, you’ll only hear Chuck talking to himself (okay, and to Wilson too). So there’s no fast-talking conversation between different people. You’ll only hear one man speaking. 

It’s like listening to a monologue.  This can help you adjust to the accent of the main character so you might be able to understand more and more as you go along with the story. 

Enjoy the simplicity!

7. Fight Club (1999)

This is a cult movie. It’s a dark and thought-provoking exploration of modern consumerism and society. 

The main character is played by Edward Norton. He's the average American citizen who’s drowning in the monotony of daily life. He’s also the nameless narrator in the movie.

Then you have the handsome Brad Pitt from the late 90s, who plays Tyler Durden. Tyler isn’t your typical buddy though; he's a man that’s got some rebellious ideas and a keen interest in creating chaos.

Together, Tyler and Edward create an underground club where men meet up to punch each other. Not your usual weekend pastime, I guess. 

Some people (me) are into stories and language learning , some others like less intellectual activities – that’s the beauty of living in the world of humans.

Anyway, this secret club becomes a space where men challenge the rules of society. The club has a clear rule and you may know what this is already as it became a famous catchphrase. 

It goes like this: “The first rule of Fight Club is: you do not talk about Fight Club.” (I just hope Tyler doesn’t mind me blogging about it.)

Although this is a challenging film as it contains slang and colloquial expressions (it all takes place in an urban setting), this is another great movie for you as the narrator talks to you directly. 

And if you read the book “Fight Club” is based on, you may enjoy the story even more. Whether you decide to watch this film or not, please don’t punch anyone. 

Be an Olly, not a Tyler.

8. Stand By Me (1986)

This is a timeless film based on Stephen King's novella “The Body.”

The story takes place in the summer of 1959 and revolves around four young American friends – Gordie, Chris, Teddy, and Vern. They go on a mission to find the body of a local boy who went missing. 

Will they find him? I can’t tell you.

This is a good movie if you’re learning English because the events are narrated by Gordie. You won’t hear the voice of a young boy though. Gordie narrates the story from his adult perspective so this can give you a break from listening to dialogue all the time. 

“Stand By Me” is another great choice for a movie if you want to improve your English.

9. Braveheart (1995)

Freeeeeeeeeeeeedooooom!  Albaaaa gu bràààààààààààth!

Oh man, I had to stop writing this post to watch the motivational speech William Wallace gave to his men before the battle against the English army.

“Braveheart” is one of my all-time favourites. It tells the story of William Wallace, a quiet Scotsman who wants to live a peaceful life in his little village among the hills of medieval Scotland. William wouldn’t hurt a fly.

So why does he turn into a furious bloodthirsty rebel fighting against the English for freedom? I won’t spoil it for you. You’ll have to find out by yourself!

“Braveheart” is great if you’d like to expose yourself to the Scottish accent, one that even some native speakers of English find hard to understand. 

The story is set in the Great Britain of medieval times so you’ll also get plenty of Queen-like British pronunciation and expressions. Forget about modern suburban British slang !

Five Oscars, a great story and an even greater Mel Gibson. 

Two words: watch it.

10. The King's Speech (2010)

I remember seeing this in a cinema as soon as it came out. 

This is a historical drama set in the 1930s that talks about the inspiring true story of Prince Albert. 

Prince Albert is about to become king. But he has a problem: he suffers from a severe speech impediment.

I’ve never been a king but I wouldn’t want to be in such a high position of authority and not be able to speak clearly, naturally and fluently. I’m sure you wouldn’t either.

So what does Albert do? He seeks the help of an unorthodox speech therapist, Lionel Logue.

Don’t be too sorry for the king though because his stammer is great news for you! You’ll get to see a movie where the main character doesn’t speak at the speed of light! 

The film also offers you a glimpse into the historical and cultural context of 20th-century Britain and exposes you to some formal language typical of the Royals. 

And it’s a movie I’d personally rewatch too.

11. Home Alone (1990)

“Home Alone” has become a holiday classic to watch over and over during the Christmas period.

The movie is about 8-year-old Kevin McCallister, who accidentally gets left behind when his family goes on vacation for Christmas. 

Kevin doesn’t mind though. In fact, he’s over the moon he hasn’t got his family members around the house anymore! He’s now free and feels proud for having made his family disappear. 

But then things change when Kevin has to defend his house against burglars Harry and Marv.

This is a great movie for learners of English for two reasons.

• Reason 1: the plot is simple. You don’t need to get your head around any intricate sequences of events.
• Reason 2: Most of the time you’ll see only Kevin talking. He’s an 8-year-old so the language he uses is fairly straightforward.

I watch “Home Alone” at least once a year. This is a movie you simply can’t miss, especially at Christmas time!

12. Inside Out (2015)

“Inside Out” is the story of Riley, an 11-year-old girl, who goes through major life changes when her family moves to a new city. 

Most of the story takes place inside Riley’s mind, where Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust live.

These five “people” living in her head are her emotions. Anger is the red one. Joy is yellow and she’s as bright as the sun. Sadness is blue and always depressed. Fear is purple and he’s the one who prevents Riley from getting into trouble.

And then you have Disgust. She’s green and was born when Riley ate Broccoli for the first time. Each emotion influences Riley’s actions and memories.

Isn’t this intriguing already?

“Inside Out” is truly a clever animated movie that will make you think about the nature of human psychology.

It’s also a great film for improving your English as the characters speak with a clear and expressive American accent.

And because the dialogue is cleverly written to reflect the distinct personalities of each emotion, you’ll get a lot of opportunities to notice how different intonation patterns are used in English .

Want to sound angry? Listen closely to how Anger speaks. Want to sound sad? Tune in to Sadness’ speech and mimic her accent.

I’m sure you’ll love “Inside Out” no matter how old you are. 

13. The Hole (2001)

“The Hole” is a psychological thriller that centres around four teenagers – Liz, Mike, Geoff, and Martyn – who decide to spend a weekend exploring an abandoned underground bunker.

What a group of naughty teens. They think nothing bad can happen to them. And nothing indeed happens – until they get trapped inside the bunker.

Spoiler alert: you’ll see disgusting scenes and some of them can be quite disturbing.  So this isn’t a movie for you if you’re not into this kind of film experience. 

The film also contains scenes of sex, nudity, violence, gore, and profanity. This is a movie for adults only!

So why would such content make a great movie for learners then? 

Like many other films I discussed in this post, the plot is simple and most of the story takes place in a bunker. Plus, you only have a bunch of characters to listen to. All this makes it easier for you to understand.

Let me warn you one more time though: this is not a movie for kids! 

14. The Cube (1997)

This is a science fiction horror film. In the opening scene, you’ll see a group of five strangers awakening to find themselves trapped in a mysterious cube-shaped room. 

Each person has a skill. Quentin is a police officer, Holloway is a doctor, Worth is an architect, Leaven is a math student and Rennes is an escape artist.

They soon discover that each room has doors on its six faces and each door leads to other cube-shaped rooms. 

But here’s what’s interesting: some of these rooms contain lethal traps. So be ready to see some gory scenes!

This is a relatively easy movie to watch as you have few characters to listen to and only one location (the cube). You’ll also get plenty of breaks from listening as the movie contains many scenes of suspense. 

15. Jumanji (1995)

“Jumanji” is a light adventure comedy movie filled with action that you might have already seen in your first language. This is one of my favourites too, not least because the great Robbie Williams is in it. 

The film tells the story of two siblings, Judy and Peter, who discover a magical board game in the attic of their new house. The board game is called Jumanji and brings its dangers, past players and wild creatures into the real world.

The dialogue is fairly accessible if you’re an intermediate learner so I think you’ll be able to enjoy it.

16. Titanic (1997)

Okay, who hasn’t seen this? We all know the story of the unsinkable ship that sank in 1912.

Titanic is a movie that can really help you get exposed to lots of dialogue. You may learn some formal expressions from the first-class passengers and some more colloquial language from the third-class travellers. 

It’s 3-hour long so it might be tiring to watch if you’re an intermediate learner. But I would recommend it anyway, especially if you’ve already seen it in your first language.

17. The Invention of Lying (2009)

Imagine a world where everyone tells the truth and lies don’t exist. If your colleagues think you’re a terrible human being, they won’t lie to you – they’ll tell you! How weird would such a world be?

In “The Invention of Lying”, Mark Bellison, played by the hilarious Ricky Gervais, lives in the most honest world you could ever imagine. But he then discovers how lying can change everything.

This is a great and original comedy movie that will help you expand your repertoire of conversational English expressions because most of the conversations take place in informal settings.

You’ll also get exposed to a mix of British and American accents.

Watch out for Riky’s distinctive glottal stop though. That could be tricky to understand. I’m not lying!

18. The Shining (1980)

A cult, a masterpiece, a blockbuster movie, a work of art, a gem – I don’t know what else to say. This is a fantastic horror movie for learners of English.

“The Shining” is story of a family – Jack, Wendy, and their son Danny – who go to an empty and isolated hotel in the mountains during winter. 

Jack is a writer struggling with writer’s block. He gets a job as the caretaker, hoping to use the quiet time to write his novel. 

Danny, Jack and Wendy’s son, has a special power called “the shining” that makes him have scary visions. Plus, the hotel has some spooky things going on. That’s enough to make you shiver. 

But there’s more. As the winter goes on, Jack starts acting really strange and you’ll soon discover that the hotel has a creepy history that affects the whole family. 

Like many other movies I discussed in this post, The Shining follows the story of few characters, the plot is simple and there’s not a lot of dialogue (but many creepy scenes!).

This is a perfect combination of ingredients that will make the movie a suitable for you as an English language learner.

And, in my opinion, you’ll see the best Jack Nicholson acting performance.

19. Robin Hood (1973)

This is a classic animated film by Walt Disney that you can watch and enjoy with your family.

The movie tells the timeless tale of Robin Hood and his band of Merry Men in the animal kingdom. They have one mission: standing up against the greedy Prince John and the Sheriff of Nottingham. 

To be honest, “Robin Hood” isn’t an easy one to understand if you’re an intermediate learner.

But I decided to include it in this list because Robin Hood is a folk hero from the Middle Ages in England. So watching this movie can help you connect with English culture and literature. 

Also, the characters speak a variety of British accents so you can get exposed to the diversity of English pronunciation.

20. The Terminator (1984)

If you say you’ve never seen this movie, sorry but…I don’t believe you!

The Terminator is a story about a robot sent from the future, played by the one and only Arnold Schwarzenegger, to kill (or “terminate” I should say) a woman named Sarah. 

But, surprise! A warrior from the future, Kyle, comes to the present to keep Sarah safe. 

There’s lots of action and shooting and running away in this movie – probably more action than dialogue, so this can help you appreciate the story more.

Also, Arnold’s Teutonic accent makes him easy to understand. (Arnold is a non-native speaker of English – did you know that?)

The Best Movies For English Learners

So, as you can see from this list of best movies for English learners, there’s one for every taste. 

If you can’t enjoy the movie because it’s too hard for you to understand, I suggest that you find something more suitable for your level. Check out the best TV shows to learn English for ideas. Or follow the rules of StoryLearning and read short stories in English instead.

Otherwise, here are some ways to increase your understanding:

• Watch the same scene more than once.
• Watch the movie with subtitles first and then rewatch them without subtitles.
• Watch only one minute of the movie and try to understand as much as you can.
• Check out Cara’s YouTube channel !

Whatever you do, don’t feel discouraged, and keep on exposing your brain to English.

But the divorce isn’t the end of the story.

6. The So cial Network

This is one of those educational movies that anyone who uses the social media platform Facebook should watch! It traces the journey of jilted boyfriend Mark Zuckerberg as he creates a platform called Facemash which allows others to rate girls on their attractiveness. Zuckerberg is found out and given academic probation but invited to help run a social network for Harvard students developed by three others. Zuckerberg then approaches an investor about his idea for Facebook and conflict is born. The twins are incensed and as Facebook becomes wildly popular a trail of lawsuits begins to follow Zuckerberg.

This movie should be listed among the ideal educational films for older students. It will challenge your ethics, make you question why and how you use social media, and create discussions around privacy and internet safety.

7. Life of Pi 

Actors: Saraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Rafe Spall

Genre: Adventure/Drama

A great story about a man named Pi whose family owns a zoo. His father decides they will move to Canada and will sell the animals there. A terrible storm sinks the ship and Pi finds himself in a lifeboat with a zebra, an orangutan, a hyena, and a tiger. Eventually, it’s just Pi and the tiger after the hyena kills the zebra, and the orangutan and the tiger kill the hyena. When he is rescued he tells this story but nobody believes him. And then, a twist.

On the surface, this seems to be one of those fantastical movies for the classroom that students will enjoy. But there’s much more to it and will raise questions about survival, truth in storytelling, and faith.

8. The B lind Side

Actors: Sandra Bullock

Genre: Sports/Drama

Based on a true story of a teen who has bounced around foster care due to a drug-addicted mother. He gets a break when a friend’s father asks the football coach of a Christian school to help enroll him. He makes the team but struggles with places to live and when the mom of a teammate finds out he’s sleeping outside, she invites him home. Slowly he becomes part of this family despite the many challenges and bumps along the way.

The Blind Side is a heartwarming tale about looking beyond outward appearances, trust, loyalty, the power of athletics, and that family isn’t always blood.

9. Girls Ri sing

Producers: Kaycee Freed, Tom Yellin, Holly Gordon

Girl Rising is a global movement for education that was born from this film that features the stories of nine girls from different locations around the world. They share their struggles to overcome the cultural and social barriers that females in their countries face daily.

13. T he Pursui t of Happyness

Actors: Will Smith, Jaden Smith, Thandiwe Newton

A hardworking but down-on-his-luck salesman has a chance encounter with a partner of an investment firm. This gives him the opportunity to become one of 20 unpaid temporary interns competing for one permanent job at the company. But the financial tension dissolves his marriage and soon he’s on the streets with his young son in tow. Is there anything more exciting than the squeaky wheels of the TV cart coming down the hall?

With all the after-school screen time children are consuming along with their snacks, parents might not exactly be psyched to learn that their kid is spending their 5th period watching movies, too. But before you call the principal’s office or start composing a highly combustible Twitter rant, remember that many students are visual learners and teachers’ go-to movies actually accompany their classroom lessons, rather than replace them.

Many English teachers especially are big fans of screening Shakespeare films along with assigned readings (remember, the swoony romance of Romeo & Juliet is actually meant to be experienced as a drama between actors, not necessarily read on the page). And movies can make dusty texts feel fresh and new. Ethan Hawke’s Hamlet , for example, retains the Bard’s Elizabethan English, but upgrades the action to a modern setting (the famous “To be, or not to be” soliloquy is delivered while a beanie-clad Hawke is roaming a now-defunct Blockbuster store).

We talked to teachers from coast to coast, who work in grade schools and high schools, to see what educational and entertaining movies light up their classrooms. From courtroom dramas to animated rainforests, musicals to time travel, there’s a movie on this list for every kid to learn from and later recap to the rest of the family at the dinner table. While desks are clearly not as comfortable as theater seats, and there probably won’t be any candy either (a win for parents!), at least students won’t be overcharged for greasy popcorn.

And don’t worry, there won’t be a test at the end!

Staci Lamb , a 9th grade teacher at Elkton High School is not just an award-winning educator, she boasts an impressive Instagram community with over 60,000 followers. When it comes to movies to show in the classroom, Lamb is a big fan of Just Mercy , starring Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx. The powerful true story about inequality and injustice follows Bryan Stevenson, a Harvard grad, attorney, and social justice activist who defends people that are wrongly convicted, and went on to found the Equal Justice Initiative .

The movie centers around one of his first clients, Walter McMillian, a man sentenced to die for the murder of an 18-year-old girl, despite evidence of his innocence. “Just Mercy captures Bryan Stevenson’s work so beautifully and invites students to analyze and reflect on Stevenson’s claims,” says Lamb, who is the 2018 CCPS Teacher of the Year in Maryland and best-selling author of Keeping the Wonder . “ It’s a powerful adaptation of an incredible true story that captivates students.”

Inside Out is an animated movie that takes you inside the mind of an 11-year-old girl named Riley as she faces a big life change: a move from Minnesota to San Francisco for her dad’s new job. This clever, high-concept film creates characters out of the emotions Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust, and Anger.

Darin Nakakihara , a teacher in Southern California who spent most of his career teaching 4th grade, appreciates how Inside Out honors kids’ inner lives, which can often be overlooked in a school setting. “Growing up can be tricky. I love how the story is built around things that the kids are dealing with during our time together and beyond — dealing with emotions,” says Nakakihara, who connects the way characters handle different feelings with his students’ experiences throughout the year. “None of this is in our curriculum, but it's something they all must learn how to navigate if they want to grow into productive members of our society.”

Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure

A movie about two spacey teens who can’t stop saying “party on, dudes!” might not seem like the most academic film to screen in class, but it turns out this 1980s classic is chock-full of mini history lessons, as well as memorable quotes (as when Ted waxes philosophical to Socrates: “All we are is dust in the wind, dude.”).

Andrew Christopher, who teaches 10th grade Global Studies in Roosevelt Island in NYC, screens this Keanu Reeves classic at the end of the year because it’s a movie that highlights world history and — let’s face it — is boatloads of fun. “Bill and Ted travel back in time to learn about history and pass their global history final exam. In doing so, the characters collect important historic figures from the past, including Abraham Lincoln, Genghis Kong, and Napoleon Bonaparte, to participate in a final presentation that brings the historic periods from which they came to life in front of the class.” And hey, even if the history lessons weren’t in the movie, there’s a case to be made for students learning that Reeves is the perfect specimen of humanity , even before his Matrix days.

Ferngully: The Last Rainforest

FernGully is an animated fantasy movie that takes place in the Australian rainforest. When a fairy named Crysta discovers a human lumberjack named Zak, she shrinks him down to her miniature size and invites him into her world of wonder and beauty. Starring the late and great comedian Robin Williams as a manic bat, FernGully has a strong environmental message that really resonates with educators.

Todd Nesloney , who has taught elementary school and was the principal of a PreK-5th grade campus, is a fan of the film that catalyzes conversation and takes on logging and pollution. “ FernGully shows how we all play a part in what happens to others,” says the author, speaker, and director of Texas Elementary Principals & Supervisors Association (TESPA). With a soundtrack by Elton John, Raffi, and “Wild Thing” rapper Tone Loc, this magical ecological movie that teaches kids to protect the rainforest will have you spellbound.

Dear Evan Hansen

Once one of the hottest tickets on Broadway, this musical’s film adaptation will pierce the tender heart of anyone who has ever felt isolated in high school (in other words, everyone). Ben Platt delivers a powerhouse performance as Evan Hansen, an outcast aching to belong in the social media age, who becomes entangled with a family grieving a son who died by suicide.

Lisa Septimus , a veteran teacher and director of student life at North Shore Hebrew Academy, gives an A+ to a movie that breaks the silence surrounding mental health challenges. “One theme of the show is showing how common it is to struggle with mental health and how often people feel alone and suffer because of it,” says Septimus. “Being able to be honest about difficult feelings makes them suddenly more manageable. That’s what Evan finally learns to do at the end.” While Septimus concedes that musicals in movie form can sometimes be corny, she gives a big thumbs-up to the plot changes the filmmakers made, including when the protagonist “embraces his authentic self including flaws and fears.”

This movie is such a ginormous hit with kids, it probably doesn’t need any introduction. But in case you’ve been living under a Bruno-free rock, Encanto is the enchanting story of a girl named Mirabel Madrigal, who is the only member of her family without magical powers. Not even celeb kids can resist belting out the music from this Disney blockbuster (“We Don’t Talk About Bruno” actually hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart !). If North West and Gene Schumer can’t stop singing these bops, your little ones probably haven’t stopped either.

Special education teacher Andrew Militscher, who works with 4th and 5th grade students at Andrus Orchard School, can speak to his own students’ obsessions with these catchy, cinematic tunes. Militscher says that Encanto is his movie of choice for a very simple but compelling reason: “The kids love to sing ‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno!’” And while the lyricism of Lin-Manuel Miranda is a masterclass unto itself, Encanto’s message that representation matters is even more compelling than its music.

Twelve Angry Men

A gripping story of bias and judicial injustice that is still as relevant today as it was in the 1950s, Twelve Angry Men is a courtroom drama that takes place over one tense afternoon, when jurors decide the fate of a teenager who is alleged to have murdered his father.

Leora Klein, founder of Uncommon Advantage and a learning specialist at Abraham Joshua Heschel High School in Manhattan who also teaches English language and literature, is quite fond of the classic film. According to Klein, “English teachers always tell their students show don’t tell. This film shows (rather than tells) the power of the individual to stand up, speak up, and affect change.” Klein is also a co-founder of 3GNY and director of WE Educate (WEDU) , an educational non-profit that empowers the grandchildren of Holocaust survivors to bring the accounts of survivors into the classroom, so this educator walks the walks when it comes to teaching kids to avoid being bystanders and face bigotry head-on.

The Great Debaters

In a time when so much student conversation takes place on screens or with abbreviated or grossly misspelled texts, it’s great for young people to discover the lost art of elocution and get reacquainted with the power of the spoken word. The Great Debaters is based on a true story that follows the incredible journey of a debate team at a historically Black college during the 1930s. Denzel Washington plays charismatic debate coach Melvin B. Tolson, who leads his students to incredible heights in a time when lynchings and Jim Crow laws were still common. Jurnee Smollett plays one of the only female debaters on the team and delivers a stirring rebuttal that will rouse any crowd.

As a teacher of both public speaking and rhetoric, Adam Bowman champions a movie that demonstrates his syllabus in action, sparks vital dialogue, and is a great example of Black Excellence. “The historical context and issues about race the film presents also engender the type of classroom discussion our students — and our country — needs,” says Bowman.

Coco is a delightful family movie that tells the story of one 12-year-old boy named Miguel and his larger-than-life adventure to the “Land of the Dead” to discover his ancestry. The computer-animated film follows a young boy’s dream of becoming a musician and ultimately overturning his family’s ban on music. Inspired by the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead ( Día de Muertos), which celebrates family members who have passed, the movie has garnered heaps of praise for celebrating Mexican folklore and culture with a Latino cast.

Imani Hamami, a lead teacher at Manhattan Children’s Center , a school known for its world-class treatment of autism and related disabilities, appreciates the positive impact Coco ’s songs have on her students’ spirits and how they provide a vehicle for teaching Mexican culture. Her students “love to sing along and pretend they are playing the guitar,” she says. Coco is a sing-a-long that inspires students to follow their dreams, especially when it takes them to unexpected places.

The Graduate

OK, so maybe the image of a young Dustin Hoffman glimpsed from between the legs of the older woman trying to seduce him might not be the first thing you think of when it comes to educational movies, but The Graduate is one of America’s most critically acclaimed films.

Veteran teacher and administrator Alice Bowman, who is the current middle school principal in Plainview-Old Bethpage, definitely agrees. Bowman is a big proponent of this ‘60s movie about adulting as a recent college grad (with a bonus playbook for breaking up a wedding). “When I taught Mass Media to seniors in English, my favorite movie to show was definitely The Graduate . I loved it because it had so much to offer the kids in terms of cinematography. It is such a classic, has a killer soundtrack, and speaks to the coming of age that they’re all experiencing.” Compared to things that that “kids these days” are consuming (ahem: the ultra-scandalous Euphoria ), The Graduate is squeaky clean by comparison and is actually rated PG. But if you’re not sold on the academic value of dissecting themes of alienation, counterculture, and female sexuality , at least your kids will come away with a necessary lesson on Paul Simon’s discography.

Summer School Mark Harmon tries to be the teacher he is not and only succeeds in reaching his students when he is the teacher they need him to be. Be true to yourself and the students will listen.

Lean on Me Morgan Freeman plays Joe Clark, the principal who is willing to do anything it takes to help make his school safe and create an environment for all students to learn. Sometimes doing what's tough is what's best for kids.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off As a teacher, this movie is a bit funnier when you think about the things Ferris is able to pull off and the craziness Edward Rooney, the principal, must have had to deal with to push him over the edge.

The Karate Kid A wimpy kid is trained to defend himself by a old Japanese man. What I always take away from this movie is the unconventional ways that Mr. Miyagi taught Daniel. Sometimes the unconventional is the way to go.

Rushmore Max Fischer, played by Jason Schwartzman, is the student that seems to be involved in everything, but can't seem to get his studies done. Bill Murray should have won an Oscar for his performance. I think every school has a Max, but how do we reach them?

Carrie Besides being the right thing to do, Carrie showcases a great reason on why kids should never bully other students. You never who has telekinetic powers, so be nice to everyone.

Mean Girls Tina Fey does a great job with this script showing how high school gossip and overall cattiness plays out. It is a funny take on a serious issue in some high schools.

Election Reese Witherspoon and Mathew Broderick (now playing a teacher) are amazing in this film showing the dark underbelly of student government. It is a funny movie that, as a teacher, makes you wonder what student leadership is all about.

Heathers It might seem like a bit dated for today's schools, but Heather's commentary on cliques is still relevant. Heathers is an excellent movie that still packs a punch today.

Dazed and Confused Forget about the herbal parts of the movie and focus on Jeremy London's character. He is supposed to be "the jock" and commit to being a certain person. He fights to be himself and that is something to be admired.

The Breakfast Club A movie that is a must-see for everyone. When I watch the movie now, it reminds me that no matter how I might perceive a student to be, there is a good chance they have some darker parts they are just waiting to share. Sometimes they just need someone to ask.

Finding Forrester One of Sean Connery's last movies before he retired and he is magnificent. A young man gets into a fancy prep school on a basketball scholarship, but it turns out he is a great writer who butts heads with his tyrannical English teacher. Connery is reclusive writer who helps the student find his voice. There is more to students than we realize at times.

The Mighty This is a story about two unlikely friends that have much to learn from one another. I stumbled upon this movie a few years ago and loved it. I will always stop and watch it.

Real Genius Val Kilmer is very funny in this movie. He mentors a young kid who skips ahead to college. It's interesting to see what the pressure of being a "genius" can sometimes do to a person.

School Ties This has an all-star cast dealing with bigotry during the 1950's. Even though it deals with anti-Semitism, the story truly applies to all types of discrimination students might face in schools.

Super 8 The reason this movie is on the list is because I feel it nailed the type of relationship young boys have at a particular age. JJ Abrams did an amazing job of writing exactly how young boys act when they are goofing around or when there is a girl in their midst. When dealing with boys in the classroom, this movie might help you make sense of their actions.

Stand by Me This is another example of boys being boys, but also young kids being forced to deal with unfair expectations or labels based on their families. Whether it's not living up to your all-star brother or trying to escape the reputation of a criminal brother, fighting to be yourself is never easy.

Living this newly uncensored and daring life ironically gives him more passion for life. And in ditching his usual style of monotonous teaching, his class shrinks in size but doubles in impact.

Richard's willingness to take risks and speak the cold hard truths that no one else will is what inspires his students to get out there and live the life that he lost to the mundane (and eventually cancer).

Played by Cameron Diaz, Elizabeth is a lazy chain-smoking gold-digger who plans to quit her job for a rich husband. When this plan falls through, she hones in on the cute and wealthy substitute Scott (played by Justin Timberlake), but faces competition from a preppy co-worker.

Despite all her schemes, traps, and seductions, Elizabeth fails to find true happiness. In the end, it's a heart-to-heart with one of her students that prompts Elizabeth to change her empty and destructive ways.

The success of Bad Teacher was followed up with a sitcom remake in 2014 starring Ari Graynor.

Ms. Blu Rain (Paula Patton) is the perfect role model for her class of troubled teen girls. She not only teaches Precious on an academic level, but she also shows her that love is possible and presents her with an exit route from her current traumatic life.

Lee Daniels premiered Precious at Sundance in 2009 despite having no distributor. Its effect blew viewers away and Oprah Winfrey quickly stepped up to promote the drama, leading to two Oscar wins.

7. The Whale (2022)

In The Whale , Charlie is a slightly different kind of teacher to the rest that are featured on this list: we never once see him in a school. In fact, we never see him—or anyone—outside of his house.

Filmed almost exclusively in his living room (yet never dull or repetitive), The Whale has Charlie hosting his college classes online. Not only that, but Charlie keeps the camera off at all times.

Why? Because Charlie is ashamed of his morbid obesity, which is rooted in grief. He lost his wife and daughter when he came out as gay, then lost his boyfriend to suicide. He now copes as a binge-eating hermit.

Brendan Fraser won an Oscar for his lead performance, undergoing a huge transformation (weight gain plus a 330-pound fat suit) that renders him unrecognizable.

Darren Aronofsky's sentimental drama is angry, lingering, and compassionate, depicting the power literature holds.

6. Another Round (2020)

Starring Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Magnus Millang

Another Round isn't really about students, as they're more background noise to the chaotic life of four disenchanted teachers in Copenhagen.

Run down by their boring lives—both at work and at home—the four friends decide to experiment: based on the Finn Skårderud theory that our bodies are 0.05% alcohol deficient, Martin (played by Mads Mikkelsen) and his colleagues decide to drink a small amount of booze every day.

Immediately, their lives become more impassioned, relaxed, and seemingly richer. Their lectures turn from mind-numbingly boring to utterly profound. However, there's only so much alcohol one can drink on a regular basis before it turns into an addiction.

Another Round won the Oscar for Best International Feature and was praised by critics and viewers alike.

But that, of course, isn't easy. Most of the class is split between rival gangs as racial tensions bubble through 90s California. Teaching becomes far more than just an everyday job for Erin; her efforts to reform and befriend her students takes over her entire life.

Hilary Swank stars as the sheltered-but-determined real-life English teacher, who wrote the The Freedom Writers Diary in 1999 (which this film is based on).

This beloved classic has stood the test of time for a reason, friends. As the title suggests, the film is replete with amazing tunes. In fact, the wholesome narrative revolves around Maria, a nun-turned-nanny who wins over her reluctant charges (and their father) with song. Parents should know that the movie is relatively free of violence and other explicitly disturbing elements, but it is subtitled and also sophisticated compared to other kid’s movies. In other words, this one is best-suited to tween and teen audiences.

12. Turning Red (2022)

Don’t ask us why some parents have their panties in a bunch over this heartwarming story about a young girl reaching puberty. As far as we’re concerned, Pixar’s first ever women-only project is a winner. The animation is lively, the characters are likable, and the sweet coming-of-age narrative perfectly captures the highs and lows of adolescence, while highlighting the importance of friends and family alike. Plus, the “red panda” metaphor is so much better than the tired “it’s that time of the month” business. (Right?)

13. Paper Clips (2004)

• Run Time : 82 minutes

When it comes to age-appropriate Holocaust education, Lois Lowry’s Number the Stars is a classic; and then there’s “Paper Clips,” a documentary about a group of students and a remarkable teacher who introduced the subject in a way that adequately captures the profound injustice of the historic event without all the violent details. You’d be hard-pressed to find a more family-friendly movie for teaching tweens about tolerance, diversity and the horror that was the Holocaust.

9. puff: wonders of the reef (2021).

There are plenty of educational and eye-opening documentaries on coral reefs and their endangerment due to climate change . As its title suggests, Nick Robinson’s Puff: Wonders of the Reef dives into the astonishing micro-world of the reefs. Our window into this world is a baby pufferfish, who navigates the treacherous waters and defies predators to grow and survive. Rather than go for a relatively straightforward message about coral reef preservation, Wonders of the Reef makes us deeply feel the importance and beauty of the reefs through its stunning visuals. 

Filmed on the Great Barrier Reef and lightheartedly narrated by the Australian actor Rose Byrne , the Netflix Original documentary was made with specially developed equipment to capture things that are too small or slow for our human eyes to perceive. Robinson and his cinematographer, Pete West’s journey into the intricate reef universe is absolutely breathtaking to behold.

From Puff blowing himself up to a spiky ball to evade a predator to the incredible close-ups of a porcelain crab and a cone snail, it’s easy to get immersed in this fantastical and colorful micro-world.  Byrne’s narration and the pitch-perfect editing evoke some humor that might appeal to the younger audience. At just 59 minutes, Wonders of the Reef is an enjoyable and informative documentary on a biologically diverse ecosystem.

8. Spelling the Dream (2020)

Sam Rega’s Netflix Original documentary, Spelling the Dream, focuses on the remarkable success of Indian Americans in the Scripps National Spelling Bee Competition. It opens with the incredible 2019 contest, where eight contestants became co-champions after an exhausting and record-breaking night of spelling. Rega’s documentary explores the dominance of Indian-American kids in spelling bee through four subjects: Shourav (14), Tejas (14), Ashrita (10), and Akash (7). Shourav’s confidence and Akash’s quirky spontaneity are so captivating to behold. 

On the one hand, we witness the educational and inspiring journey of these super-spellers to compete at the National Spelling Bee. On the other hand, through diverse Indian-American interviewees (including comedian Hari & Dr. Sanjay Gupta), Rega examines the assumptions surrounding the alleged wizardry of these kids. There are no unique genetic dispositions or demanding, pushy parents. It’s all about hard work, determination, and resilience.

Spelling the Dream also wades into the murky waters of racial bias as these kids’ American identity is often up for debate in social media.  At times, the documentary’s approach to the subject becomes run-of-the-mill and not as exciting or thrilling as Jeffrey Blitz’s masterful documentary Spellbound (2002). Yet, Spelling the Dream is definitely worth a watch for putting a spotlight on this quintessential American success story.

7. david attenborough: a life on our planet (2020).

The legendary British broadcaster and naturalist David Attenborough has had a prolific career presenting and producing natural history documentaries for several decades. From dense rainforests to vast deserts and deep oceans, David Attenborough’s passion and enthusiasm for examining wildlife from various habitats are positively infectious. Our window into this complex and expansive habitat is the families of an elephant, a painted wolf, and a lion. These families endure the changing seasons and ensure their offspring are protected from multiple threats. We also get a glimpse of the ecological catastrophes these animals cope with – from drought to wildfires. Bolstered by gorgeous cinematography, Surviving Paradise is one of the most entertaining and educational Netflix movies for the family. 

The Netflix doc mostly avoids detailing the gory reality of the kill or a hunt and focuses more on how a strong family unit evades the ever-present perils. Moreover, actor Rege-Jean Page’s narration (best known for playing Simon Basset in Bridgerton ) is saturated with both sweetness and poignance. 5. chasing coral (2017).

Chasing Coral by Jeff Orlowski-Yang (director of Chasing Ice and The Social Dilemma ) is an effective coral reef and climate change documentary delineating the power of image to inspire change. Former ad executive Richard Vevers actuates an environmental advocacy project on the rapid global extinction of coral reefs. But despite his passion for the ocean, Vevers’ understanding of coral colonies is limited. Yet, like many of us concerned about global warming, Vevers understands how losing this intricate and precious ecosystem would impact our planet. His journey to make a layperson comprehend coral reef extinction without any heavy scientific explanation forms the crux of Netflix’s original documentary, Chasing Coral. 

While it starts as a passion project with an intent to educate, the documentary gradually brings an emotional aspect to the events and makes us root for the collective mission. Central to Chasing Coral’s visceral and emotional impact is Zackery Rago, a self-avowed coral nerd. Rago’s journey, alongside Vevers, Orlowski, and other conservationists, tirelessly brings to light the many challenges Earth’s oceans face. The sheer visceral impact of witnessing the devastating results of their project makes it much more than a polemical climate change documentary. Sadly, despite the hope and awareness instilled by the documentary, the global decline in coral reefs is persisting. It’s been seven years since the making of Chasing Coral, and coral scientists are expecting “unprecedented mass coral bleaching” in 2024.

4. Into the Inferno (2016)

Veteran filmmaker Werner Herzog has been an intrepid explorer, capturing the farthest corners of the world and the strangest aspects of the human condition. The Netflix original documentary Into the Inferno chronicles Herzog’s global voyage to document active volcanoes.  Teaming up with the British volcanologist Clive Oppenheimer, whom Herzog met in Antarctica while shooting the 2007 documentary Encounters at the End of the World , the duo not only focuses on the raging mountains of fire but also zeroes-in on humankind’s relationship and interpretations of these terrifying wonders. 

The documentary opens at a village situated near the active volcano Mt. Yasur, in the South Pacific island nation Vanuatu. The village chief speaks of their ancestor’s spirits living inside the volcano and how his brother can communicate with the ever-rumbling mountain. As Herzog and Oppenheimer travel to Indonesia, Ethiopia, North Korea, and Iceland, we learn how humankind has concocted myths and legends about the volcanoes. Interestingly, Oppenheimer or Herzog doesn’t exhibit condescending attitudes towards the local cultural beliefs. With his evenhanded narration that expresses bemusement, Werner Herzog reflects on the insignificance of the human race in the face of the majestic and deadly force of nature. 

At times, Into the Inferno seems to digress, examining the idiosyncrasies of people more than the science behind volcanoes. However, most of the enigmatic and eccentric individuals Herzog comes across showcase humankind’s intriguing relationship with nature. Moreover, the North Korea episode, shot from the perspective of an earnest, neutral observer, offers an insightful glimpse into life behind the Iron Curtain.

James Reed, the BAFTA and Academy-Award-winning co-director of My Octopus Teacher , has directed the riveting and immersive Netflix limited series documentary Chimp Empire. The four-part docu-series, set in Uganda’s Kibale National Park, explores the intricate dynamics between two communities of Ngogo chimpanzees. Mr. Reed has previously directed a documentary observing the Ngogo chimpanzee clan, titled Rise of the Warrior Apes (2017). But unlike Rise of the Warrior Apes , Chimp Empire doesn’t feature researchers’ interviews and instead opts for an incredible scripted narration (written by Matt Houghton and narrated by actor Mahershala Ali). 

At times, the battle for supremacy between Jackson’s Central Group and Hutcherson’s Westerners evokes tension, like an action thriller. At the same time, the educational documentary doesn’t forsake science for the thrills. Chimp Empire offers a wealth of information about the chimpanzee community – from the politics and economics of its relationships to the source of sustenance and the brutal territorial conflicts. The grooming, meat sharing, border patrolling, and dominance displays provide us with a fascinating glimpse into a world we know little about. Moreover, the story of how James Reed and his team captured these dramatic situations looks as captivating as the scenarios in the docu-series. 

The chimps’ hunting strategies can be scary to watch for little kids. But mostly, the documentary doesn’t focus much on the acts of violence. There are occasions when we might question the scientific accuracy of the documentary’s narration or wonder how much of the insights are strongly anthropomorphized. Yet, Chimp Empire bestows a revelatory look at an animal community that isn’t so different from us.

2. My Octopus Teacher (2020)

Great documentaries, while informing us on a specific subject, can also craft a grippingly coherent narrative that mixes wonders, thrills, and a heartwrenching drama. That’s precisely what the Academy-Award-winning Netflix Original documentary, My Octopus Teacher, gloriously brings to the screen. Directed by James Reed & Pippa Ehrlich, the documentary follows naturalist and filmmaker Craig Foster exploring underwater kelp forest at a remote location near Capetown, South Africa. There, he begins to forge a bond with an octopus. When the human intrusion is not perceived as a threat, the octopus, driven by curiosity, observes the individual. Over a year, Craig meticulously documents his various encounters with the octopus. 

Anyone familiar with octopuses might know they are solitary animals with a very short life span. However, what the documentary highlights – from Craig’s routine observations – is the octopus’ complex problem-solving qualities and abilities to manipulate her environment. At the same, beyond science, the octopus, through her human observer, becomes a genuine flesh-and-blood character. Foster’s soothing narration can be accused of anthropomorphizing the octopus’s behavior. However, the documentary handles this strong emotional attachment in a level-handed manner, making us think about universal human emotions like longing, empathy, and healing. 

The magic of the underwater world is also captured in a mesmerizing manner. Rather than reciting facts and making experts explain things, My Octopus Teacher simply evokes our curiosity about kelp forest ecosystems through the deeds of its one smart inhabitant. This is one of the truly engaging and educational movies on Netflix that people need to watch again and again.

1. daughters of destiny (2017).

Vanessa Roth’s four-part docuseries, Daughters of Destiny, can be an eye-opening glimpse into the inequalities and discrimination deeply entrenched in Indian society. Roth explores this subject through the struggles of five girls who are socially discriminated against and financially underprivileged. But pivotal to their stories is the boarding school they study: Shanti Bhavan, situated in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. Each year, the school takes twenty-four students (12 boys and 12 girls) from the marginalized Dalit communities, educating them (apart from housing and feeding them) from the age of four until they finish college. The school’s founder, Mr. Abraham George, sold his software business in America to a Fortune 500 company to start Shanti Bhavan in 1997. He and his son, Ajit George, perceive education as a means to uplift the kids and their families from poverty and discrimination. 

When Daughters of Destiny began, I was open to learning about this fascinating school and, at the same time, a bit skeptical, wondering if it would turn out to be an overly idealized portrayal of Shanti Bhavan’s inspiring journey through the five girls’ perspectives. But gradually, Vanessa Roth shapes Daughters of Destiny as a nuanced exploration of the girls’ – Thenmozhi, Manjula, Karthika, Preetha, and Shilpa – individual growth, identity crisis, and their shifting relationships with their families. Shot over seven years, as we witness these girls navigating their emotions and personal challenges, plenty of profound questions about gender, class, and caste are raised. In fact, it’s astounding how a documentary about the importance of education and a unique school covers multiple issues plaguing Indian society.

Vaness Roth’s keenly observational approach brings out a few contradictions and problematic aspects within the school’s lofty ideals. The documentary follows the girls beyond the school premises to showcase the developmental and psychological obstacles they must overcome to bear the tremendous responsibilities. This ability to keep in touch with the girls’ reality makes it much more than an inspirational or educational documentary. Eventually, film critic Roger Ebert’s words on the groundbreaking documentary Hoop Dreams (1994) can be quoted in relation to the impact of Daughters of Destiny : “ It takes us, shakes us, and makes us think in new ways about the world around us.
