Hindi – Not Given Preference

Unfortunately, even though Hindi is the fourth widely spoken language in the world, people in the country of its origin do not give it the importance it deserves. From school to college to the corporate offices – it is English that is given more preference and Hindi takes a back seat. It is quite common to see parents, teachers and everyone around emphasizing on the importance to learn both written and spoken English as it helps a great deal in securing a job. It is sad to see that even for jobs and educational courses that require people to be smart in other respects, the employers choose them based on their English speaking skills. Many people lose an opportunity to work just because they are not fluent in English even though they have a good knowledge about the task to be accomplished.

Hindi Diwas is an attempt to awaken such people and instill them with respect for the Hindi language.

Schools Must Celebrate Hindi Diwas

It is unfortunate that even as Hindi is the most widely spoken language in India and has also been sanctioned as one of the official languages of the Republic of India most schools in India treat it as unimportant. English is given more significance and stress is laid upon learning both spoken and written English.

Children, these days, grow up with a mindset that a person who speaks English knows everything and is better in every respect than those who are not fluent in the language. Those who choose to speak in Hindi during the interviews or elsewhere are looked down upon. This mindset should be changed. It is true that English is a global language and is given preference especially in the corporate world and it is not wrong to hone the students’ written and spoken English. However, they should not be given an impression that Hindi is lesser than English in any respect. It is time the students must be taught to value and respect both the languages alike.

Just as the schools conduct fun activities and cultural programs on other special occasions such as Diwali, Independence Day and Janamashtami, they must also celebrate Hindi Diwas to rejoice our mother tongue.

Hindi Diwas is a great way to pay respect to our national language, Hindi. The newer generation is fascinated by the western culture and English language and is following them blindly. This day is a good way to remind them of their roots which is important in building their character.

Hindi Diwas – Significance

Despite being the third most widely spoken language after Mandarin Chinese and English, there is a significant scarcity of the people who could fluently read, speak and write Hindi.

As English gains popularity in Indian sub-continent, Hindi is gradually losing its ground and its future existence is also threatened. It is feared that if the things continued at the same pace then in coming years Hindi might completely be extinct. Thus, there is a need to support Hindi at war footing to prevent it from extinction.

The day brings a sense of responsibility to all the people who know Hindi language. They are encouraged to adopt Hindi in speaking, reading and writing, in their every day works, as a gesture of respect for their mother tongue.

There is an urgent need to promote Hindi not only in India, but also in the world, in order to keeping it from extinction.

Despite persistent efforts by the Government of India, to get Hindi recognized as the official language of the United Nations, Hindi still struggles for its recognition.

General public, Government and Private offices are encouraged to use Hindi as the official language instead of English, atleast for a day. The message is sent that Hindi could be saved from extinction only if we start speaking, reading and writing in Hindi as much as we can.

Awards are conferred to encourage people doing notable work in Hindi, in order to inspire and encourage them to continue their work and also to spread awareness about the language.

How to Observe Hindi Diwas – Activities

There are several ways in which you can show you love and respect for your mother tongue. Some of the easiest and effortless ways are given below-

1) Learn New Words

No matter how well you command a language, there is always something left to explore. Hindi is a wide language having huge vocabulary of words. Know some new words and play with them, by making sentences, poems etc.

2) Read Hindi Literature

Many books have been written in Hindi by notable or not so popular Hindi writers, on variety of subjects. There are story books, adventure, suspense, science fiction, religion etc. Pick your favorite genre and enjoy the read.

3) Speak/Write Hindi

The best way to learn or promote a language is to speak and write in it. Speak Hindi in your school, college, office etc. Write in Hindi, a paragraph or two on any of the subject of your choice. You can write a story, a small poem or whatever you wish to write.

4) Promote Hindi

Hindi is at a stage when its wide spread promotion is required to prevent it from getting extinct in future. Promote Hindi in whatever way you can – read, write, tell others about the significance of Hindi, organize a small Hindi debate in your office, class or community etc.

5) Tweet in Hindi

Most of us spend a good amount of time on social media. Hardly a day passes when we do not tweet or reply or express concern over an issue. But, most of those tweets are in English. Let us vow to tweet in Hindi on Hindi Diwas.

Despite being the third widely spoken language in the world, Hindi is on the verge of extinction. Widespread use of English in India is one of the main causes for depleting Hindi popularity. Today, English is used in all schools, colleges, government and private offices etc. Such huge acceptability of English has hugely threatened Hindi which faces extinction, if not provided enough leverage for its promotion. Therefore, annual “Hindi Diwas” celebrations are like a new lease of life to the mother tongue.

Why is Hindi Diwas Observed on 14 th September?

Oppositions were also made against the government’s efforts of making Hindi a compulsory subject in schools. The agitations forced the government to withdraw a compulsory Hindi order and make it optional in schools.

India is a country rich in diversity with many languages, cultures, religions, and ethnicities. But, Hindi is the most popular and widely used language in the sub-continent. It not only deserves the status of an official language but also needs to be kept alive by promoting and encouraging new writers and poets.

Hindi Diwas is celebrated every year on '14 September' in India. In the year 2021, 14th September is celebrated on Tuesday. In the year 2022, 14th September will be celebrated on Wednesday.

India is a huge country. Despite the diversity in religion, language and culture, Indians are living in harmony here since ancient times. After the independence of India, on 14 September 1949, the Constituent Assembly unanimously decided that the Hindi language would be the official language of India. On the request of Rashtrabhasha Prachar Samiti, Wardha, to show the importance of this important decision and to spread Hindi in every region, every year 14 September will be celebrated as 'Hindi Diwas' all over India since 1953.

Hindi is the most spoken language in India. It can be understood by 75 percent of the people of the country or can express their views. Hindi language is simple. It is also called the sister of Sanskrit. More and more words of many regional languages are also used in Hindi language. Words of many languages are found in Urdu, Assamese, Bala, Punjabi, Gujarati, Oriya, Rajasthani etc., due to which Hindi appears as an easy and understandable language for all Indians. Even when India was under the British, great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi had felt deeply the need of the country to have a national language of its own. Along with independence, he also emphasized on the promotion and propagation of the national language Hindi. He has said – “There is no nation without national language.” Each nation has its own national language. The civic duties like unity, harmony, brotherhood of the nation are developed through the national language. Keeping all these things in mind, the Constituent Assembly of India has given constitutional dignity to Hindi language as the official language of the country. Keeping in view the importance of this Hindi language, Hindi Day is celebrated every year.

Hindi Diwas is celebrated with great pomp. The process of celebrating this program is going on in many forms like Hindi Diwas, Hindi Week, Hindi Pakhwada etc. Especially in all the offices, undertakings, corporations, institutions subordinate to the Central Government, this day is celebrated with great enthusiasm. Big posters are put up in banks, railways, oil companies, government offices and institutions on the occasion of Hindi Diwas. In various competitions, speeches etc., great personalities are invited and prizes are given to the employees working in Hindi. To promote Hindi in all government and non-government sectors, this proud achievement is remembered by many programs till the month of September.

Hindi Diwas every year reminds us of our true identity and unites all the people of the country. Wherever we go our language, culture and values should stay with us and this serves as a reminder. Hindi Diwas inspires us for the spirit of patriotism. In today's time people prefer to learn English more than Hindi because English is spoken all over the world. English is also one of the official languages of India. The importance of Hindi Day is that it always reminds us that Hindi is our official language and it holds a lot of importance.

Hindi is the official language of independent India. Present Hindi has got this honor only after the tireless hard work of great people like Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Kakasaheb Kalelkar. Nowadays Hindi Days are organized only for show, the ultimate purpose with which this language has been limited in the Constitution, that purpose could not be achieved at present. Therefore, Hindi Divas will prove successful in experimental form only by doing all the work in Hindi language in government and non-government offices. On this occasion, every year 14 September is celebrated as Hindi Diwas.

Hindi Diwas – Essay in English

Hindi Diwas – Essay in English

admin September 11, 2017 Essays in English 11,398 Views

The Constituent Assembly of India adopted Hindi as the official language of the Republic of India on the 14th of September 1949. However, the idea of using it as the official language was sanctioned by the Constitution of the country on 26th January 1950. The original day of adopting Hindi as the official language is observed as Hindi Diwas.

It was a moment of pride for the Indians when the Constituent Assembly of India adopted Hindi as the official language of the country. The Constitution approved the same and Hindi written in Devanagari script became the official language.

14th September, the day the Constituent Assembly of India adopted Hindi as its official language, is celebrated as Hindi Diwas each year. Many schools, colleges and offices celebrate this day with great enthusiasm. These places are decked up for the celebration and people come dressed in Indian ethnic wear. Many people come forward to talk about the importance of Hindi language and Indian culture. Schools host Hindi debate, poetry and story-telling competitions and cultural programs.

It is a day to stress upon the importance of Hindi language which is losing its significance in the country where English speaking population is considered smarter. It is sad to see how during job interviews, people who speak English are given preference over the others. It clearly shows that employers mistake a person’s English language skills for their knowledge about the task at hand. It is time to overcome this biased attitude.

Hindi Diwas is a great step to emphasize the importance of our national language as well as our culture.

Paragraph on Hindi Diwas 300 words

Hindi Diwas is celebrated in India on the 14 th of September each year. The day is celebrated to give due respect to its official language, Hindi. Hindi has been one of the most widely used languages in our country since ages. However, it never attained the stature of official language because of the invasions and changing rulers of our country. It was after the independence of our country and the establishment of self rule that Hindi was adopted as our official language.

Why is Hindi Diwas Celebrated?

Both English and Hindi have been declared as the official languages of our country. However, the inclination towards English is much higher among the Indians. A person who knows English and is fluent in the same is given more respect while someone who doesn’t know it and uses Hindi language to communicate is looked down upon. Belittling of our mother tongue and the people who use it is a matter of shame for us.

Hindi Diwas is a way to remind us that Hindi is our main language. It is our mother tongue and is also our official language. It is rooted in our culture and thus defines us. The importance of Hindi language is emphasized through the various events organized to celebrate Hindi Diwas.

Richness of Hindi Language

Research shows that Hindi is the fourth widely used language in the world. It is not only used widely in India but is also used by people belonging to many other Asian countries including Nepal, Mauritius, Guyana, Pakistan, Suriname and Fiji. Many Hindi words used worldwide are mistaken to be from English language. Some of these include bungalow, karma, jungle and guru. Hindi is one such language that is capable of writing every sound in the world.

Hindi Diwas is thus a day to rejoice this rich language. The events organized on Hindi Diwas are a good way to invoke respect for this language and promote its use in the country.

The Significance of Hindi Diwas

Hindi language is an integral part of our culture and connects us to our roots. In today’s times when the young generation is lured by the western culture and recognizes English as a status symbol, Hindi Diwas is a way to remind them as to where they belong. This is not to say that they mustn’t learn or use English. It is practically not possible as English also happens to be our official language and is used globally. Without the knowledge of this language, it is difficult to survive in today’s times. However, it is unfortunate that we Indians have started giving more importance to English and often tend to belittle or disrespect our mother tongue, Hindi.

Importance of Celebrating Hindi Diwas

Hindi Diwas is celebrated to rejoice the beauty of Hindi language and remind us of its rich past. The younger generations must especially be reminded of the importance of this language. The History behind Adopting Hindi as the Official Language

India had been prey to invaders since long. During the Mughal rule Persian was used as the official language of the country. After the British colonized the country, English was widely used by their officials. However, Indians wanted Hindi to be adopted as the official language of the country and the proposal for the same was put forward many a times.

There had often been a debate on making Hindi the official language of India however the non-Hindi speaking states such as Tamil Nadu objected to it. A lot of agitation and protests were also done in Tamil Nadu on the proposal of making Hindi the sole official language of the country.

(Essay On Hindi Diwas in hindi)

(Importance of Hindi Diwas in hindi)

(Important Events In Honour Of Hindi in hindi)

(Hindi Diwas Essay in Hindi)

(Short and Long Essay on Hindi Diwas in Hindi, Hindi Diwas par Nibandh Hindi mein)

Hindi Diwas Essay

Hindi Divas is celebrated every year on 14 September. This is because on this day the Constituent Assembly of India declared the Hindu language written in Devanagari script as the official language of the Republic of India. The Constituent Assembly of India adopted Hindi as the official language of the Republic of India on 14 September 1949. However, the idea of using it as an official language was approved by the country’s constitution on 26 January 1950. The day Hindi was used as an official language is celebrated as Hindi Divas.

Short and Long Essay on Hindi Diwas in English

Essay – 1 (300 words).

The Constitution of India adopted Hindi written in Devanagari script as the official language of the country in 1950 under Article 343 of the 1950s. Simultaneously, both English and Hindi were formally used at the level of the Government of India. In 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India adopted Hindi as the official language of the country. Hindi Divas is celebrated on 14 September every year since the year 1949.

importance of hindi day

Hindi Diwas is celebrated to remember the day on which Hindi became the official language of our country. It is celebrated every year to emphasize the importance of Hindi and to promote it among every generation which is influenced by English. It is a way of reminding the youth about their roots. It doesn’t matter where we reach and what we do, if we stick to the ground and stay in sync with our roots, we’ll be able to hold our own.

This day every year reminds us of our true identity and unites the people of the country. Wherever we go, our language, culture and values must stay with us and serve as a reminder. Hindi Diwas is a day that inspires us to have a patriotic spirit.

In today’s time there is an inclination towards English which is understandable as English is used all over the world and it is also one of the official languages of India. This day is a small effort to remind us that Hindi is our official language and holds a lot of importance.

While English is a worldwide language and its importance cannot be ignored, we should not forget that we are Indians first and we should respect our national language. The adoption of Hindi as the official language proves that those in power recognize their roots and want Hindi to be given importance by the people.

Essay – 2 (400 words)

Hindi Diwas celebrated every year on 14th September is a way to cherish the Indian culture and give respect to the Hindi language. Hindi was adopted as the official language of the country on this day in the year 1949 by the Constituent Assembly of India.

Hindi Divas – Utsav

Hindi Divas celebrated in schools, colleges and offices is also celebrated at the national level in which the President of the country gives awards to those people who have achieved excellence in any field related to Hindi language.

In schools and colleges, the Management Committee organizes Hindi debate, poetry or story telling competitions. Cultural programs are also organized and teachers give speeches to emphasize the importance of Hindi language. Many schools host inter-school Hindi debate and poetry competitions. Inter-school Hindi essay and story writing competition is also organized. It is a day to give respect to Hindi language which is losing its importance especially among the new generation.

This day is also celebrated in offices and many government institutions. People wear Indian ethnic wear to rejoice in Indian culture. Women wear suits and saris and men wear kurta pajamas on this day. Cultural programs are organized on this day and people enthusiastically participate in it. Many people read Hindi poetry and talk about the importance of our culture.

Hindi – Most spoken language in India

Hindi is undoubtedly the most widely used language in India. Although Indians are still inclined towards English and its importance is emphasized in schools and other places, Hindi remains strong as the most widely spoken language of our country. In the census conducted in 2001, more than 422 lakh people mentioned Hindi as their mother tongue. No other language in the country is used by more than 10% of the total population. Most of the Hindi speaking population is concentrated in North India.

Hindi is the official language of several Indian states including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Jharkhand. Bihar was the first state in the country to adopt Hindi as its sole official language. Bengali, Telugu and Marathi are the other widely spoken languages of the country.

Hindi Diwas is a day to revisit our cultural roots and celebrate our richness. Hindi is our mother tongue and we should respect and understand its value.

Essay – 3 (500 words)

India is greatly influenced by western customs. Indians want to dress like the people there, follow their lifestyle, speak their language and moreover want to be like them in everything. They do not want to understand that Indian cultural heritage and values are much richer than the culture of the West. Hindi Divas celebrated on 14 September is a way to pay respect to the Hindi language and Indian culture.

Hindi – 4th widely spoken language in the world

Hindi is the fourth widely spoken language in the world while India has a majority Hindi speaking population. Other countries where Hindi is widely spoken are Pakistan, Nepal, Mauritius, Fiji, Guyana and Suriname.

People all over the world love Hindi songs and Hindi movies which clearly defines the affection towards this language.

Hindi not getting priority

Unfortunately, even though Hindi is the fourth widely spoken language in the world, people in its native country do not give it importance. From school to college, corporate, offices, English is given more priority and Hindi lags behind English. It is common for parents, teachers and everyone to stress the importance of learning English in writing and orally as it helps a lot in securing a job. It is sad to see that even for jobs and educational courses people have to be smart as the hiring executives select them on the basis of their knowledge of English. Many people lose work opportunities simply because they cannot speak English fluently even if they have a good knowledge of the job.

Hindi Diwas is an attempt to awaken such people and to instill in them respect for the Hindi language.

Special events related to the prestige and importance of Hindi

Many schools and other institutions celebrate Hindi Divas every year. Here are the special celebrations organized in honor of this day:

  • Former President of India Pranab Mukherjee presented awards in various categories for excellence in various fields related to Hindi. A function was organized in Vigyan Bhawan New Delhi in honor of Hindi Diwas.
  • Official language awards are also given to departments, ministries, nationalized banks and public sector undertakings on this day.
  • Due to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party at the Centre, there has been an increase in the importance and recognition of Hindi language and Hindi Divas.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a World Hindi Conference held in Bhopal said that English, Hindi and Chinese are going to rule the digital world emphasizing on the importance of language.
  • Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had also raised the issue of official language status for Hindi in the United Nations.

Hindi Diwas is celebrated with great enthusiasm in various places, although many people in our country are not yet aware of this day and many people do not even consider it important. It is time that people should recognize the importance of this day as it is a day to remember our national language and our cultural base.

Essay – 4 (600 words)

Hindi Divas is celebrated every year on 14 September to honor the Hindi language and on the same day it was declared as one of the official languages of India. A special day has been earmarked to celebrate its importance as the world’s fourth widely spoken language. There are many interesting facts about this language that make it unique.

Hindi Divas – An Important Step

The move to accept Hindi as an official language in India is welcome, although the decision to celebrate Hindi Diwas every year is really commendable. Hindi Diwas is a reminder that wherever we go we should not forget our ideals and culture. This is what defines us and we should enjoy it. This day is celebrated with enthusiasm in various government institutions.

Interesting facts about Hindi language

There are many interesting facts about Hindi language some of which are as follows:

  • The name Hindi is derived from the Persian word Hind which means the land of the river Indus.
  • Hindi is essentially one of the members of the Indo-Aryan languages of the Indo-European family of languages.
  • The language does not contain any articles.
  • Many words in English take inspiration from Sanskrit.
  • Hindi is written entirely in phonetic script. The words in this language are pronounced the same way they are written.
  • There are many such words used all over the world which seem to be English words but in reality these words are from Hindi language. Some of these words are jungle, loot, bangla, yoga, karma, avatar and guru.
  • All nouns in Hindi language have gender. They are either feminine or masculine. Adjectives and adverbs in this language differ on the basis of gender.
  • It is one of the seven languages used to create web addresses.
  • Every sound in the world can be written in Hindi language.
  • Hindi language is used not only in India but also in other countries around the world including Pakistan, Fiji, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Singapore, New Zealand, United Arab Emirates and Australia.

Hindi Day must be celebrated in schools

It is unfortunate that Hindi is the most widely spoken language in India and has been accepted as one of the official languages of the Republic of India, but most schools in India consider it unimportant. More importance is given to English and pressure is placed on learning both spoken and written English.

Kids these days grow up with a different mindset. According to them a person who speaks English knows everything and is better than other people who do not know English. People who speak Hindi in interviews or elsewhere are underrepresented. This mindset should be changed. It is true that English is a global language and it is given priority especially in the corporate world and it is not wrong to improve the English that students use both orally and in writing. However, they should not understand that Hindi is less than English for any reason. It is time that the students should be taught to treat and respect both the languages, English and Hindi, as equals.

Just like schools organize fun activities and cultural programs on other special occasions like Diwali, Independence Day and Janmashtami, they should celebrate Hindi Day to pay respect to their mother tongue.

Hindi Diwas is a great way to pay respect to our national language Hindi. The new generation is more influenced by western culture and English language and blindly following them. This day is a good way to remind them of their culture which is important for their character building.
