'Driver Jamuna' Movie Review: The Aishwarya Rajesh-starrer is all over the place all at once
There are zillions of genderbiased stereotypes that continue to be perpetrated for decades together. Two of the most common and archaic labels are Women can’t read maps, and women are bad drivers — and as always, the onus is put on women to break these stereotypes. The latest attempt to break the aforementioned stereotype is driver Jamuna, the titular character in Aishwarya Rajesh’s latest. She not only is a walking-talking city route map but can also do a 360-degree skid like a pro.
Okay, Driver Jamuna is not a proclamation that women are good drivers, but the point is it doesn’t have to be spelt out so either. Director Kinslin normalising women cab drivers and not harping on the novelty of it is in itself a move in the right direction. Interestingly, Kinslin’s previous film, Vathikuchi (2013), also featured a driver at the centre of things. If Vathikuchi was about an auto driver,
Driver Jamuna follows a cab driver who takes up this male-dominated profession after her father passes away. Yes, we have father sentiment scenes, but they just come as flashes, and don’t really tug at our emotional chords. One of the interesting aspects of Driver Jamuna is that the story transpires in less than 2 hours, and this is reflected in the film’s runtime too.
Driver Jamuna, which aims to be an edge-of-the-seat thriller, revolves around Jamuna, who is inadvertently caught in a quagmire after a bunch of henchmen become her cab passengers. How she escapes from the mess forms the rest of the story. However, it isn’t a simple ride from start to finish.
The narrative takes us to various places where the henchmen plot with their colleagues to plan the murder of ex-MLA Maragathavel (Aadukalam Naren). In the initial few minutes, we are introduced to Jamuna, her agnostic ideology, and her paralysed mother (a terrific Sivaranjini). As the film progresses, the non-linear narrative does get cumbersome in places. We see random people popping in and out of the narrative with no real impact. Their humdrum performances and the far-fetched cat-andmouse chases don’t help either.
This randomness not only confuses, but it also becomes tiresome to follow all the characters and their motives. However, when the film does not incite the intended core emotions, the only respite is watching Abhishek Kumar and his funny-no-brainers. Abhishek transports his cheerful social media vibe to the big screens even if his character has a very limited scope.
His presence is reminiscent of those Tamil films from the not-so-future past where we had separate comedy tracks that existed for no rhyme or reason except to elicit a few laughs. Similarly, Aishwarya’s honest efforts to elevate this film reflects in many places. But there are some portions in which her performance is just peripheral, and a few driving sequences, enhanced by VFX, feel too basic and unreal.
As far as the writing is concerned, the filmmaker has placed a few suspense elements and knots throughout the film. And these come together with a bang in the climax, which has an intriguing twist. It was surely the best part of the film, which tests our patience before getting there. This twist reflects the earnestness of the filmmaker’s vision, which probably withered away due to a lack of focussed writing and prosaic filmmaking techniques.
Right from Karma, the angst of an underprivileged woman, to politics and power, Driver Jamuna actually touches upon a myriad of topics. However, with all of them, including the protagonist’s want being served as a mega-revelation in the climax, it all feels overwhelming. If only there had been an inventive execution and a gripping narrative, Driver Jamuna could have driven past mediocrity and manoeuvered itself from the tight corner of being just another ‘women-centric film.’ If only.
Director: Kinslin Cast: Aishwarya Rajesh, Aadukalam Naren, Kavitha Bharathi, Sriranjini, Abhishek Kumar Rating: 2.5/5

It was an okay film. It was a thriller but the main character wasn't really shown as a spotlight or even brave until the end of the movie. For most of the movie she is shown as a meek and scared girl. The story doesn't have connection throughout. Only the climax of the story explains what happened overall and for what reason it happened. You have literally no clue why the main character acts the way she does. I would say all together it is an ordinary movie and nothing too good or extraordinary story to it that's interesting to watch.

Driver Jamuna movie review: Aishwarya Rajesh’s film is slow yet engaging thriller; looks predictable, but isn't
Driver jamuna movie review: aishwarya rajesh plays jamuna, a taxi driver, in the tamil film. for a thriller, it reserves most of its thrills for the last 10 minutes, and that’s a move that may not appeal to everybody..
Aishwarya Rajesh has come a long way since her rise-to-fame role in the National Film Awards-winner Kaaka Muttai. Today, she’s at a stage in her career where she’s confidently headlining films that solely rest on her shoulders. Driver Jamuna is one such film which is a smart thriller that treads a familiar path, but only to deceive the audiences with a good twist. It’s a thriller, where the pay-off makes up for the otherwise predictable plot. Also read: Aishwarya Rajesh’s film is a visually pleasing thriller with convoluted messaging; read Boomika movie review
Aishwarya Rajesh plays Jamuna, who has decided to become a taxi driver after the death of her father, who also used to be a driver. The sudden death of Jamuna’s father has left her mother terminally ill. Jamuna decides to take up her father’s job, despite stiff opposition from her aunt, who feels men are more suitable as cab drivers. One day, Jamuna gets a long-distance ride to drop three passengers, who look very suspicious. At first, she refuses to take up the ride and requests one of the passengers to cancel the booking. However, they request her to take up the ride and she obliges, but it doesn’t take her much time to realise that they’re contract killers, who are on their way to kill a local minister. Will Jamuna be able to stop the attack and save herself? This forms the crux of the story.
Driver Jamuna is the kind of film that takes a lot of time to make sense. For a thriller, it reserves most of its thrills for the last 10 minutes and that’s a move that may not appeal to everybody. That doesn’t take away the fact that the narrative boasts of some smartness, especially in how everything is made to look predictable, but only to deceive with a solid twist. The action sequences shot inside the car are one of the highlights of the film. They’re realistically choreographed, and serve as some of the highs of the film. If only more thrills were infused the story throughout, this would’ve made for a riveting watch.
Aishwarya in the central character is good but the rest of the supporting cast doesn’t contribute much up with their performances. The film definitely needed better writing to make the initial one hour engaging.

DRIVER JAMUNA MOVIE REVIEW CLICK TO RATE THE MOVIE
Driver Jamuna is a film written and directed by Kinsley, and bankrolled by SP Chowthari under the banner 18 Reels. The film has Aishwarya Rajesh playing the titular role, while Aadukalam Naren, Kavitha Bharathi, Sriranjani, Abishek Kumar, Manikandan Rajesh, and others play supporting roles. The music is composed by Ghibran and the cinematography is handled by Gokul Benoy.
Jamuna (Aishwarya Rajesh) has just lost her dad, and that has resulted in her mother getting Parkinson's disease. She decides to take up the job of a car driver, following in the footsteps of her dad, despite opposition from her extended family. During one of her trips, she has to drop 3 contract killers but gets to know about their identity midway. How she manages to escape from them forms the rest of the story.
We've seen plenty of heroine-centric films in Tamil cinema off late, which is a welcome sign for the industry. And Driver Jamuna is the latest to join the list. However, unlike most female-centric films, this one is slightly offbeat mainly because of the grounded nature of the female lead. Jamuna (played by Aishwarya Rajesh) is not a superstar, rather, she's a taxi driver who can do very little.
She gets scared, she gets anxious, she panics, she laughs, she cries, and is as human as any of us. Aishwarya Rajesh is terrific as Jamuna. She sells the character really well. Especially in the climax, there's a shot where she has to express anger without being able to speak a word. Her eyes communicate emotions so well.
But a well-designed character alone cannot make a good film. Barring a solid twist in the climax, the melodramatic elements slow down the film's pace drastically. As an audience one can clearly feel where the film lacks conviction. Had the film just been a survival thriller throughout, the end result would have been even better. Among other actors, Sriranjani plays the role of her mother, a Parkinson's disease patient. Despite her limited screen time, she also plays her part beautifully. Abishek Kumar, who plays the role of a co-passenger also impresses.
Technically, cinematographer Gokul Benoy's visual tone is consistent and the camerawork complements the film properly. Ghibran deserves all the praise for the exemplary work he's done. For instance, there's a scene where an upcoming music director gets into Jamuna's taxi while the goons are inside. He keeps irritating everyone in the taxi by humming a horror-themed BGM. As the film cuts to the next shot, Ghibran uses an orchestrated version of the same, and such nuances make the film-watching experience better.
Overall, Driver Jamuna is technically strong with a few flaws in the writing. The tonal shift toward the end might not work as expected, and the engagement could have been better because of the predictable nature of the narrative. The 100-minute run time is definitely a positive, but Driver Jamuna could have been a less bumpier ride.

Kinslin and his highway residing tales are fascinating, energy-gaining moment after having a quick nap from "Vathikuchi" and the finale showdown in "Jamuna" are exceptions to flex.
A kinda 90-minute ride that even Rowdy Pictures can't bring out from their table irrespective (for her) of their wealth which on the contrary lacks over here. Kinslin is meeting all the requirements and the eligibility criteria to be a part of LCU if it's possible.

Pathetic. This is no more than a fucking torture. In spite of this shitty screenplay Ghibran also plays a terrible score which nearly gave me a head ache. I really have to stop this friday-new-movie-craving.

Driver Jamuna had a gripping and interesting trip with lots of engaging factors. The film holds our interest from beginning to end and it was focused on the plot without any unnecessary scenes. It was short and thrilling. I felt the seat at the edge moment. Loved it.

#DriverJamuna (Tamil) {2/5} - Darunamaina jamuna. 😴
Genre : Thriller PG : Can watch with family Runtime : 1 hour 40 minutes Year of release : 2022
Actually a decent story from the director who made #Vathikuchi in 2013. I liked that film back then so watched this with decent expectations.
But the execution is very very below the par. Starting from the casting, performances (Including Aishwarya Rajesh), background score, technical aspects, fights, logics everything gone for a toss. 😑
Went to theatres on first day and the show got cancelled because of no audience. Thank god. Kadavul irukaaru. 😍
Streaming on AHA in Telugu & Tamil. 😎

Driver Jamuna is a decent thriller. It has a mediocre story and predictable screenplay. Climax twist is what makes it an one time watch.

Had all the ingredients for a potent road thriller but fell flat throughout and ends up being average, but climax twist was a bit unexpected and wasn't illogical.
Review by Jillu's ★½
A thriller which was set in a political line. The movie didnt have a good gripping scenes right from the start. It was passable till the pre-climax. There was a forced twist which didnt have any logic with it. Could have done it with a trustworthy logic. It felt like the director thought that climax is much needed for a thriller. Yes, it is needed but there should have a proper backdrop so that the bang on climax will work. In this that was completely missing and they narrated the whole movie in the climax only and rest of the scenes were just kept as set piece to take the movie till climax

Driver Jamuna Tamil Movie
'Padikathavan', the 1985 Rajinikanth starrer had its leading man play a cab driver. Even the Fiat that he drove was given a name (Lakshmi) and that became a cult of sorts for those who are fond of their cars (doffing the hat to the 90s kids)! Days flew by, women and objectification have become a subject of debate, and now we have a 'women-centric' genre of films with new-age directors.
We've always had this genre in the past with the 'B' line of directors - (Balumahendra, Balachander, Baghyaraj, Bharathiraja) - pardon me for the pun! However, today's directors tend to be more innovative in their portrayal. After 'Padikathavan', only now did we get a cab driver as the lead character, and that too played by Aishwarya Rajesh (smell the meat already?).
The movie is about Jamuna (Aishwarya Rajesh), who drives a taxi for a living. There is a group of hitmen who are hired to settle things off with a politician ('Aadukalam' Narain). Jamuna happens to offer a ride for the gangsters and gets caught up in the melee. Cops plan an operation to nab the gangsters by following Jamuna. Finally, towards the climax, a twist in the tale reveals how it all played out!
The issue with the movie is the lackluster first half! There were so many logical lapses that were left unattended till the end. The knots were loose and lacked any spice. Adding to the woes were the comic sensibilities of Abhishek Kumar who was stuffed in. The best he offered was a mild migraine. The goons were caricatures from an action comic - not one had a unique character!
Aishwarya's backstory was well disguised, yet it was uninteresting and fell flat. Narain and Manikandan's combo as the father and son did work out in parts. The screenplay lacked the needed depth for an action flick. There were no elaborate action sequences, nor any sinister plans. It was all haphazard and everyone seemed to think on their feet.
There was not a single moment that brought us to the edge of our seats! We just keep on guessing what is going to happen next! Time and again we get some sentiment stuffed into the mix with the portrayal of a single mother, who is slowly sliding into the jaws of Parkinson's Syndrome. Melodrama ensues towards the climax too.
There was no conviction in the climax. Director haphazardly tied the knots on whatever he managed to lay his hands on since the beginning. Director Kinslin committed the same mistake in his debut movie, 'Vathikuchi' - even there, the premise was fine, but the screenplay failed.
Had the first half been polished with some crisp scenes and refreshing dialogues, it would have segued well into the second half for a rollicking climax. Now driver Jamuna has lost her way and is failing to switch on the maps! We as the audience suffer as a result!
Driver Jamuna Movie Review: The Aishwarya Rajesh-starrer is all over the place all at once
Rating: ( 2.5 / 5).
There are zillions of gender-biased stereotypes that continue to be perpetrated for decades together. Two of the most common and archaic labels are — Women can't read maps, and women are bad drivers — and as always, the onus is put on women to break these stereotypes. The latest attempt to break the aforementioned stereotype is driver Jamuna, the titular character in Aishwarya Rajesh's latest. She not only is a walking-talking city route map but can also do a 360-degree skid like a pro. Director: Kinslin Cast: Aishwarya Rajesh, Aadukalam Naren, Kavitha Bharathi, Sriranjini, Abhishek Kumar Okay, Driver Jamuna is not a proclamation that women are good drivers, but the point is it doesn't have to be spelt out so either. Director Kinslin normalising women cab drivers and not harping on the novelty of it is in itself a move in the right direction. Interestingly, Kinslin's previous film, Vathikuchi (2013), also featured a driver at the centre of things. If Vathikuchi was about an auto driver, Driver Jamuna follows a cab driver who takes up this male-dominated profession after her father passes away. Yes, we have father sentiment scenes, but they just come as flashes, and don't really tug at our emotional chords. Anyway, one of the interesting aspects of Driver Jamuna i s that the story transpires in less than 2 hours, and this is reflected in the film's runtime too. Driver Jamuna , which aims to be an edge-of-the-seat thriller, revolves around Jamuna, who is inadvertently caught in a quagmire after a bunch of henchmen become her cab passengers. How she escapes from the mess forms the rest of the story. However, it isn't a simple ride from start to finish. Their humdrum performances and the far-fetched cat-and-mouse chases don't help either. This randomness not only confuses, but it also becomes tiresome to follow all the characters and their motives. However, when the film does not incite the intended core emotions, the only respite is watching stand-up comedian Abhishek Kumar and his funny-no-brainers. Abhishek transports his cheerful social media vibe to the big screens even if his character has a very limited scope. His presence is reminiscent of those Tamil films from the not-so-future past where we had separate comedy tracks that existed for no rhyme or reason except to elicit a few laughs. Similarly, Aishwarya's honest efforts to elevate this film reflects in many places. This twist reflects the earnestness of the filmmaker's vision, which probably withered away due to a lack of focussed writing and prosaic filmmaking techniques. Right from Karma, the angst of an underprivileged woman, to politics, power, and other themes, Driver Jamuna actually touches upon a myriad of topics. However, with all of them, including the protagonist's want being served as a mega-revelation in the climax, it all feels overwhelming. If only there had been an inventive execution and a gripping narrative, Driver Jamuna could have driven past mediocrity and manoeuvered itself from the tight corner of being just another 'women-centric film.' If only.

Driver Jamuna Movie Review: Aishwarya Rajesh’s film lacks logic and inventiveness

- Aishwarya Rajesh plays the role of a cab driver in the film.
Release Date: 29 Dec, 2022
Aishwarya Rajesh is one of the promising stars in the Tamil film industry. With solid projects in her kitty, she has proved her mettle as an actress with her choice of her films. With a film like Driver Jamuna, which is about a woman cab driver, the anticipation surrounding the film is quite high. Will Driver Jamuna deliver?
Jamuna (Aishwarya Rajesh) is a cab driver and has taken after her father, who was killed. He was also a driver. One day, three criminals, who are about to carry out a high-profile murder, get her as a driver through an app. Will Jamuna find out about the criminals? Will the criminals execute the murder successfully? The answers to these questions are unveiled in the course of less than two hours.
Driver Jamuna starts on a promising note. We get introduced to the world of Jamuna, her ailing mother, a brother who ran away from home, and her aunty, who thinks that driving is not a woman’s job. One day, she takes up a ride, where three killers get into her cab. We are curious to know what happens next. Sadly, that’s where the good parts end. What follows next is a story that is replete with logical errors.
Kinslin, director of Vathikuchi, helmed Driver Jamuna. The Aishwarya Rajesh-starrer is mind-boggling at times. Because you cannot comprehend how such glaring loopholes went unnoticed by the team. There are killers on the loose and police officials at every possible checkpoint to catch hold of them. However, the proceedings make you question who is dumber – the killers or the police. Towards the end, you come to the conclusion that the joke is on you.
In a crucial scene, Aishwarya Rajesh pulls off an Anniyan-like act. But, the police officer is so blind that he can’t even catch the hint. Many scenes are rushed and you end up scratching your head more than once.
However, it is the final stretch that is redeeming. This is where all the plot points are connected and give a convincing end to the story. The climax stretch is quite predictable and the emotional connection is missing as well.
Aishwarya Rajesh as cab driver Jamuna pulled off a neat performance in the film. So did the supporting actors, Aadukalam Naren, Sriranjini, Manikanta and Kavitha Bharathi. Driver Jamuna, however, had brilliant cinematography by Gokul Benoy.
Had the makers invested more time on the screenplay, Driver Jamuna could have been more taut and interesting.
