The best way to start a General Manager cover letter is with a compelling opening line that captures attention and directly relates to the role or company you're applying to. Begin with a strong statement that reflects your leadership style or a key achievement that's relevant to the position. For example, "Transforming underperforming units into market leaders has been a hallmark of my career, and I am excited about the opportunity to bring this expertise to [Company Name] as your next General Manager." This approach immediately showcases your value proposition and aligns it with the potential employer's needs, setting a confident tone for the rest of your letter.

General Managers should end a cover letter by summarizing their interest in the position and their qualifications. This can be done by reiterating key points from the body of the letter, expressing enthusiasm for the opportunity, and indicating a desire for further discussion. It's also important to thank the reader for their time and consideration. For example: "I am excited about the opportunity to bring my strategic management skills and proven track record of success to your organization. I look forward to the possibility of discussing my candidacy further. Thank you for considering my application." Remember to end with a professional closing such as "Sincerely" or "Best regards," followed by your name. This ending strikes a balance between professionalism and enthusiasm, leaving a positive impression on the hiring manager.

A General Manager's cover letter should ideally be about one page long. This length is enough to clearly and succinctly present your qualifications, achievements, and interest in the position without overwhelming the reader. As a General Manager, you're expected to communicate effectively and efficiently, and your cover letter should reflect this. It's important to be concise and to the point, focusing on your most relevant experiences and skills. Remember, the cover letter is your chance to make a strong first impression, so make every word count.

Writing a cover letter with no experience as a General Manager can seem daunting, but it's all about showcasing your transferable skills, potential, and enthusiasm for the role. Here's how you can approach it: 1. Research: Understand the role of a General Manager and the industry you're applying to. This will help you identify the key skills and qualities required, and you can then relate these to your own experiences. 2. Introduction: Start your cover letter by introducing yourself and stating the position you're applying for. Express your enthusiasm for the role and the company. 3. Highlight Transferable Skills: Even if you haven't worked as a General Manager before, you likely have transferable skills from other roles. These could include leadership, strategic planning, financial acumen, problem-solving, or communication skills. Use specific examples to demonstrate these skills. For example, if you led a project or team, improved a process, or managed a budget, these are all relevant experiences. 4. Show Potential: Employers are not just interested in what you've done, but also what you could do. Show your potential by discussing your career goals, your eagerness to learn, and how you plan to contribute to the company. 5. Show Knowledge of the Company: Show that you've done your homework by mentioning what you admire about the company, how you align with their values, or how you could contribute to their goals. 6. Professionalism: Maintain a professional tone throughout the letter. Be concise, clear, and respectful. 7. Closing: In your closing paragraph, thank the employer for considering your application. Express your interest in discussing your qualifications further in an interview. 8. Proofread: Always proofread your cover letter for any grammatical errors or typos. It's also a good idea to have someone else read it over as well. Remember, everyone starts somewhere. What you lack in specific experience, you can make up for with transferable skills, potential, and enthusiasm.

What Is a Cover Letter and Why Is It Important?

A cover letter is a brief letter of introduction that usually accompanies a resume . It gives you a chance to cover more information that may not be as easily conveyed in the typical bullet-point format of a resume.

When writing a cover letter , you have the opportunity to introduce yourself, highlight your skills, accomplishments, and goals, and explain what you hope to bring to the company if hired.

Parts of a General Manager Cover Letter

Whether your cover letter is geared toward an entry-level position , managerial position, job promotion , or government job , there are key parts of a standard cover-letter formula you need to include:

Your contact information

The organization’s information

Dear [Manager Name],

First paragraph: intent and opening hook

Second paragraph: main body with key skills and accomplishments in relation to the job requirements

Third paragraph: closing lines with a compelling call to action

Best regards, followed by name and title

You have only one page to grab a hiring manager ’s attention, so you need to make every sentence count. The strongest cover letters are creative while remaining professional.

If graphic design isn’t your thing, utilize free cover letter templates to ensure your layout is professional.

General manager cover letter opening.

It’s essential to include the basic contact information for both you and the company you are applying at the top of the letter. Remember, you want to make it as easy as possible for a hiring manager to contact you.

If possible, address your cover letter to the hiring manager by name. If you don’t know the hiring manager’s name , use a gender-neutral greeting such as “Dear [Company Name] Recruitment Manager.”

Tip: “Dear Sir or Madam” isn’t likely to score you any originality points when it comes to a good first impression. The impersonal greeting feels generic and indicates that you’re sending a mass cover letter to multiple employers without taking the time to personalize each one to the specific position.

While a neutral “ Dear Hiring Manager” or similar phrase is acceptable in lieu of a name, consider mentioning the company and/or department to make it a little more personalized.

The first two sentences of your opening need to immediately hook a hiring manager’s attention. Start by assertively announcing your application to the position and following it with an impactful accomplishment.

Numbers are particularly eye-catching, so if you can quantify your claim with statistics, percentages, or dollar amounts, your letter is much less likely to end up in the “pass” pile without even getting a full read.

Example Cover Letter Opening:

Jane Doe General Manager 9876 Home Avenue Sample, NC 27010 123-867-5309 [email protected] linkedin.com/in/janedoe March 10, 2021 John Smith Operations Manager Big Global Company 5432 Bustle Street Commerce, CA 94108 Dear Mr. Smith, I am applying for the General Manager position at Big Global Company. In my previous role as general manager at Ecom, I led four cross-functional teams to increase revenue by $2 million per year and cut costs by 28% over a three-year period. I believe a position at Big Global Company is the right choice for my skill set, experience, and career goals.

Note that the applicant in the example used specific growth measurements instead of relying on market buzzwords and empty, generic claims about increasing revenue and cutting costs. This technique is much more likely to garner attention.

General Manager Cover Letter Body

Now that you have a hiring manager’s attention, you need to keep it. To prove that you’re a worthy candidate for the position, you need to explain:

Why you want this job

The skills that qualify you for the specific requirements of the job

Why you are the perfect fit for the position

You might be surprised by how many applicants drop the ball here by prattling off a list of general skills and accomplishments that have nothing to do with the specifics of the job listing.

To stand apart from the noise of the competition, you need to prove that you did your research and fully understand what’s expected of you in this job position, then directly tie your skills to the company’s needs.

Example Cover Letter Body:

My primary goal is to drive revenue for a customer-focused global leader in the eCommerce industry, and I’m especially interested in the culture, innovation, and potential for future development with Big Global Company. Your job listing on Indeed specifies that you’re searching for a leader to act as a liaison between the product development, customer service , and distribution center departments, as well as negotiate shipping contracts and optimize distribution efficiency. My track record at Ecom proves that I have those necessary skills: Department liaison: Managed four separate teams totaling 103 employees and reduced company turnover by 12% due to implementing employee incentive programs and quarterly team-building activities . Negotiate shipping contracts: Created proposals for three different shipping companies and successfully negotiated a new deal with a carrier to decrease shipping costs by 15% without sacrificing delivery time for customers. Optimize distribution efficiency: Completed a detailed cost-benefit analysis and implemented new procedures and equipment to increase revenue by an average of $2 million per year.

Note that the applicant clearly understands what is expected in the job description and breaks down her exact qualifications to meet every requirement in a concise, easy-to-read format.

General Manager Cover Letter Closing Lines

So far, so good, but now you have to keep up the momentum and cross the finish line with a strong closing . The ending may not seem as relevant as the rest of the letter, but remember that you have to make sure you leave a lasting impression.

That being said, don’t drag it out with unnecessary fluff. You’ve made your point; now drive it home with a quick recap and optimistic closing to remind the hiring manager why you are the right candidate for the job .

Example Cover Letter Closing:

I look forward to discussing how my strategic management, analytical perspective, and thorough knowledge of Shopify, NetSuite, Fonality, and ShipStation can translate to cost savings and revenue gains for Big Global Company over the next year and decade. Best regards, Jane Doe General Manager 123-867-5309 [email protected]

Note that the applicant didn’t just say “ Thanks for your time ” and leave her strong pitch hanging. She wrapped up her closing in a way that demonstrates her knowledge, enthusiasm, desire for the company’s success, and goal of being with this company long-term.

Example of a General Manager Cover Letter

Putting all the parts together illustrates how the ideal cover letter should start with an attention-grabber right off the bat and keep that same level of energy and competency throughout the entire pitch.

Tips for a General Manager Cover Letter

Use confident language. This is a managerial position, not an entry-level job , so a hiring manager will expect leadership and confidence in a candidate. Instead of using timid words and phrases like “might have” or “possibly” to undermine your skills, choose absolute phrases like “I do have” or “I am confident that.”

Cite quantifiable achievements to make a bigger impact. Instead of saying, “I helped my previous company grow its annual revenue,” give a specific number: “I facilitated an annual 28% growth increase.”

Expand on relevant experience and skills listed in your resume . A cover letter provides an opportunity to elaborate and put resume points into a larger context.

This especially applies to any sort of leadership, coaching, and team-building that you can cite, as these are important points to a hiring manager searching for a candidate who can upskill and mentor a team .

Final Thoughts

Instead of dreading the cover letter and contemplating whether you should opt out when a job application states that a cover letter is optional, think of it as an extra opportunity to introduce yourself and make your case.

The extra effort can go a long way, especially if you’re applying for a management position where doing the bare minimum just doesn’t cut it.

Even if you have a great resume, the cover letter just might be that final wow factor that elevates your application above someone who either didn’t send a cover letter or didn’t put the same level of time and care into drafting it as you did.

[Your Full Name]

If you want to create a master cover letter, one that you will use for multiple positions, then you should create a personalized document which can be easily altered to add new details which apply to the position.

The best cover letters are ones that showcase both the passion you have for the position, and the relevant skills that you bring to the table that make you the ideal candidate.

You can do this even when keeping 90% of the words the same.

Don’t believe me?

Here are some tips to keep in mind when crafting a master cover letter:

1. Minimize Work By Keeping Most of the Wording

The best thing about having a general cover letter is that you can keep almost 90% of the wording the same, and still create a personalized cover letter.

But how do you do this?

You can do this by creating spots within the document for personalization, like spaces where you can put in your hiring manager's name, the name of the company that you're applying for, as well as the position's name.

If you want to go one step further, skim over the company's vision and values, which you can easily find in a job description.

With an easy-to-follow, plug-and-play cover letter for multiple jobs, you can cut the work down from almost a half an hour to several minutes.

This way, you can crank out several cover letters for different job applications.

2. Show That You've Read the Job Description

Cover letters and resumes are completely different animals.

Your resume is something that is entirely yours: your work experience , your unique skills , and your education.

But your cover letter is for someone else to read.

Essentially, a resume is a one-way street, but a cover letter is an intersection of ideas and personalities.

Show the hiring manager you care within the first paragraph by learning a bit about the company, either through:

  • Their website
  • Their executive's social media posts
  • Promotional material
  • Through people that you know who work for them

According to the Harvard Business Review , it's important to do your research before applying for a position. You can glean information about the culture and values of the company, just by looking through the company's website.

More often than not, you can find a lot of information about the company in the job application. You may be able to find the mission statement of the company.

And please, whatever you do, try to find the name of the hiring manager. Try to avoid using the generic, "Dear hiring manager," salutation at the start of your cover letter.

3. Quantify Your Accomplishments

When creating a general cover letter, try to include accomplishments that you can quantify. This isn't always easy to do.

But if you look at your experience with the last company you worked for, what were the exceptional milestones throughout your time.

Did you help contribute to a major financial goal at your company?

For example, if you were on the sales team when you reached a profit increase of 7% for the first quarter of 2020, share about that. You played a role in that achievement, so mention your part.

You can also tie back into a specific skill that helped you lead to a key performance indicator.

Maybe you played an important role with updating the communications of your team by introducing them to a messaging program to help collaboration in the workplace.

You can point out the number of people who adopted using the platform, and show how productivity increased as a result of it.

4. It's Not Always about You

A cover letter is a place to brag about yourself, specifically about the skills and achievements that have led to your success.

However, mentioning your role within a team can show a hiring manager you are a team player, one that loves to collaborate and be involved in projects.

You can also mention your current manager, and the role that they have played in your life.

5.What To Do If A Cover Letter Is Optional

For some jobs that you apply to, cover letters will be optional.

One bit of advice: sending a generic, basic cover letter can hurt your chances of getting the job.

Instead, either send a more personalized cover letter, like a master cover letter, which is personalized to the business that you're applying for, or don't send one at all.

Entry-Level Cover Letter Sample

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am applying for the position of Drug Research Specialist (Entry Level) that I came across at PANDA Corp. I believe that my academic experience matches your requirements.

During my studies, I have gained experience in the field of medicine and pharmaceuticals. Moreover, during my master’s program, I’ve completed my diploma in Pharmaceutical Research, which helped me in better understanding the processes and best practices in drug development.

Additionally, under the ImunoHelp program, I have undergone various professional and self-development training. Each training permanently added to my skill set.

Having spent the last seven years of my life outside the United States, my home country has made me multicultural. My vibrant experience traveling and studying at different institutions, in UAE, USA, Portugal, and France have undoubtedly contributed to my open-mindedness, creativity, and adaptability, as well as working in a diverse and multilingual team.

I’m excited to have the opportunity to discuss how my skills can help your company grow. I’m available for an interview at your convenience.

Anna Kendrick

If you choose to build your general cover letter off of the one listed above, your hiring manager will take one look at it, and hope that another organization hasn't snatched you up yet.

Work experience isn't the only thing that a hiring manager is looking for. Even if you have minimal work experience, you can always highlight your area of studies and why it was effective in gaining skills.

Creative Cover Letter Sample

Dear Mr. John,

Having recently completed my Master of Arts degree in Gender, Feminist, and Women's Studies, I am a passionate advocate for advancing the scholarship, publicity, and works of marginalized communities and underrepresented women of color.

I was excited to see the Publicity and Digital Marketing position at ACME Inc. because it fits well with my PR and communications experience and skills in gender advocacy, social issues, and political science.

With 4 years of experience in social media management and public relations for SaaS companies, here is what I can offer specifically to ACME Inc.:

Using social media, I can bolster the reach and visibility of promotional events and digital media coverage. As the previous communications lead of a gender advocacy center, I can engage young adult demographics by bringing products and events to life using strategic marketing plans and innovative channels.

I can analyze and harness social media analytics to reach demographics most likely to resonate with the ideal ACME customer.

Lastly, my academic experience in political and social sciences has given me a strong attention to detail, research skills, and precise communication skills.

I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to meet with you to discuss how I am the best person for the Publicity and Digital Marketing position at ACME Inc.

Jack Austin

When you check out the example above, you see someone who is excited about the position, and has learned a little about the company to which they're applying.

Give concrete, authentic examples of why you want to be a part of their team because these examples help bolster your credibility.

If you are a social media expert, and you really enjoy the advocacy programs at a company, you can use it as an example of how you are passionate about driving views to the site.

Career Change Cover Letter Sample

My name is Nicholas and for the past 5 years, I’ve been the general manager for Coffi&Biscuits where I managed to increase the YoY revenue of the shop 10x in the past three years.

I was excited to see the Business Development Manager position for Bootstrap IO, as it is a career change that I’m looking forward to making.

Managing a team of 15 taught me a lot about budgeting, planning, and organizing the workload. I can help you with expanding your team in the next quarter and reach your goal of launching your new product across the United States.

I’d love to jump on a Zoom meeting with you to further discuss joining the team. I’m available at your disposal.

Nicholas Costa

When writing a cover letter, like the example above, always explain to the hiring manager how hiring you will help their company.

If you can show a hiring manager through practical examples that you're willing to jump on board the team, and lead them toward success, then you're going to get an interview.

  • A properly crafted simple cover letter can save you time, while also sharing your story.
  • Try to keep most of the words you use for each cover letter by creating spaces for personalization
  • Show that you've read the job description and know a little bit about the company in the first paragraph of your cover letter.
  • Quantify your accomplishments
  • Share credit when credit is due.If you're interested in crafting a customizable, easy-to-use general cover letter, then Enhancv's Cover Letter Builder is the tool that you need. How to create a good cover letter for a general manager: free tips and tricks

Even entry-level applications can benefit from our tips and tricks for crafting a winning job application letter for your resume. Getting ready to promote yourself for a managerial role, provide a job application package with impeccable formatting, layout and content. Here is a short list of right moves and big mistakes many candidates make. The following general manager cover letter example will give you a clear idea how to pen out an attention-grabbing letter.

Clearly state your achievements. Specify not only the requirements and duties you’ve carried out in your job but also the results they brought to the company. Drop numbers, especially if they are impressive. Even if you don’t have the experience, say that you have the attributes.

Never undermine your expertise. It would be a mistake to write ‘I’m probably not the most qualified candidate’ or ‘Give me a chance to prove myself.’ You get the recruiter to see that you are most qualified for the job by saying it in clear terms.

Use the language from the job opening. It will allow you to better understand what the employer wants and needs. At the same time it will allow you to communicate the recruiter that you’re a perfect fit for the job.

Don’t sound selfish and self-absorbed. Don’t tell the recruiter how great the job is for you. The emphasis should be on them. Therefore, tell them that you will give boost to their company/department with your efforts.

Make it more personal. First, mention the recruiter’s name and the department you’d like to join. Second, find out more about the company’s business strategy, organization and management style.

Avoid sounding redundant. Your text should be concise and to the point. So take away a passage about your “true calling” and your childhood dream. You should be personal but only in terms of relevance to the position you’re applying to.

Through my 18-year career spearheading high-impact sales & business development strategies for leading companies in the automotive industry, I’ve come to excel at developing customised solutions across a suite of platforms to meet organisational goals in B2B sales, product management and marketing. I’ve held P&L responsibility of up to USD 30 million, forged strong relationships with clients across APAC, and led multi-market, cross-functional teams of up to 25 staff. As such, I am confident that I am the ideal candidate for General Manager at DEF Company . When you're applying for a job, a cover letter is the best way to attract positive attention to your resume. Serving as a letter of introduction, it can express your interest in a company, demonstrate your qualifications for a general manager position and establish your abilities to communicate effectively. A good cover letter is an effective tool to get your foot in the door for an interview.

Format Your Letter Professionally

Although it may be tempting to exercise creativity as you put together your application, resist the urge and opt, instead, for a professional approach. Include your contact information (name, mailing address, phone number and email address) in a block at the top of your document in a header format. A couple of lines below the header, put the date you are writing your letter, aligned on the left side. Address the hiring manager or other appropriate professional by name. Your letter should appear businesslike with a single-spaced body and easy-to-read font. Calibri, Times New Roman and Arial are more traditionally accepted fonts. Add a single-space line between paragraphs, and use three single-space lines between your closing and your name. Your signature will go in that space. Close with "Sincerely" or "Regards." Keep your style and language consistent throughout, with margins of no more than 1.5 inches. If you are sending your letter as a hard copy, be sure to sign it in ink.

Explain Your Purpose

The first paragraph introduces you and tells the reader why you are writing the letter and sending your resume. Explain that you are interested in an available general manager position. State where you saw the opening listed or how you heard that the company was hiring. Briefly state some basic knowledge you have about the organization and elaborate why you are interested in working for them, especially as a general manager. If you don't know much about the company, do some research before writing the letter.

Show That You Can Do The Job

Following the introductory paragraph, write a new paragraph explaining how you meet the job requirements. Highlight your education and experience that qualify you for the job. Briefly share information about any awards or achievements you've earned that relate directly to the general manager position. Provide examples of how you've exhibited leadership or specific instances where you've managed others. Cover all the details you want to include, but remember, you aren't repeating your resume. Avoid listing irrelevant facts that don't support your argument that you are the right person for the job. The purpose of the cover letter is to entice the recipient to read your resume. Limit your letter to one page in length.

Conclude Your Letter Strongly

In a final paragraph, reiterate how your skills, talents and experience align with the company and the traits they are seeking in an applicant. Thank the reader for considering your application and encourage her to contact you, in case she needs more details about your qualifications or wants to schedule an interview. If you feel comfortable with the idea, show initiative by stating that you will contact her within a couple of weeks to check on the status of your application. Demonstrating your comfort and confidence in contacting a potential employer may convince a reader that you have the skills for a management position. Carefully proofread your letter before sending it. A letter full of errors or misspellings will not get you an interview.
