Analytics research

The analytics lab  at the University of Oklahoma is located in the School of Industrial Engineering and is actively pursuing research in various aspects of data science and analytics:

• Complex resilient network systems
• Novel predictive and classification modeling approaches and applications
• Applied metaheuristics

The current primary thrust of the lab is in the domain of “community resilience” in which all three research areas complement each other synergistically.  In particular, we are focused on investigating approaches to help communities (e.g., cities, towns) withstand and recover rapidly from disasters.  We have partnered with a variety of experts from Civil Engineering, Economics, Social Science, and Computer Science to study and quantify how disruptions in the complex interdependent infrastructure systems that underpin modern society impact economic measures and social norms.  We are developing new mathematical models to capture the many levels of complexities in the system; we are studying how “big data” can help inform emergency response and recovery efforts; and working towards novel machine learning methods and applications to support resilience in general.

2015 – 2020  NIST Center of Excellence Grant Award

Total amount: $20 million

Research efforts are devoted to develop the  NIST-Community Resilience Modeling Environment (NIST-CORE) .  Working with collaborators from Colorado State University, Rice University, Texas A&M University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Oregon State University, University of Washington, and others to develop a platform for community resilience modeling and optimization.

2015 – 2018 NSF-Critical Resilient Interdependent Infrastructure Systems and Processes (CRISP) Collaborative Research

Total amount: $2.2 million

Resilience Analytics: A Data-Driven Approach for Enhanced Interdependent Network Resilience

This collaborative research integrates multiple disciplinary perspectives in engineering, computer science, and social science to address how community-driven data can help (i) understand the behavior of these interdependent networks before, during, and after disruptions, and (ii) more effectively reduce their vulnerability to and enhance their recovery after a disruption.

Two research components comprise this effort in resilience analytics . The first component creates a network model of the interdependence of infrastructure networks, the community networks that they serve, and the service networks engaged to respond after a disruption.  The second component integrates the interdependent network model with community-sourced data to develop a framework of data analytics to better understand and plan for resilience. This component builds on research in the field of socio-technical systems relating to the analysis of social media data monitored after a disruption. This project aims at taking a significant step forward in our understanding of how real-time data from social media and other sources can describe, predict, and prescribe practices to manage interdependent networks in crises.

Thomas C. Kupiec, Ph.D. and Philip Kemp, Ph.D. have over 50 cumulative years experience as experts in the fields of forensic toxicology and pharmaceutical sciences. Dr. Kupiec is the CEO of Analytical Research Laboratories (ARL) in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He received his Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Oklahoma, College of Pharmacy in 1997. He currently serves on the National Advisory Board for the College of Pharmacy at OUHSC, and is also a graduate faculty member. His professional experience includes: · Associate Director of the Workplace Drug Testing Division of Northwest Toxicology (NWT, Inc), Utah · Senior Research Chemist in Toxicology, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Oklahoma · Senior Forensic Chemist at the Oklahoma City Police Department. Dr. Kupiec is affiliated with numerous pharmaceutical and forensic organizations including the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, The Society of Forensic Toxicologists, International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists, and Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society. He has published numerous articles and abstracts in peer-reviewed journals including: The Journal of Analytical Toxicology, The Journal of Forensic Sciences, The Journal of Pain and Symptom Management, and International Journal of Pharmaceutical Compounding. Dr Kupiec has also published a chapter in Clarke's Analysis of Drugs and Poisons (Third Edition). Dr. Phil Kemp is Laboratory Director for ARL. He received his M.S. in Biomedical Sciences from the University of North Texas in 1991 (specializing in forensic toxicology) and a Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the Louisiana State University in 1994. He served over 14 years as Chief Forensic Toxicologist for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of Oklahoma. He has taught forensic toxicology at the University of Central Oklahoma and is a graduate faculty member at the College of Pharmacy (OUHSC). Dr. Kemp is a Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Toxicology, a fellow in the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and an active member of the Society of Forensic Toxicologists, the Southwestern Association of Toxicologists and the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists. Dr. Kemp has given numerous scientific presentations and authored/co-authored a variety of peer reviewed articles and abstracts in scientific journals including the Journal of Forensic Sciences and the Journal of Analytical Toxicology.

Dr. Thomas Kupiec, Chief Executive Officer

Dr. Thomas Kupiec is the CEO of Analytical Research Laboratories (ARL) and DNA Solutions Inc. Dr. Kupiec received his Ph.D in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center College of Pharmacy. He currently serves as a graduate faculty member at the OU Health Sciences Center and has held teaching appointments at several universities. He has published numerous articles and abstracts in a variety of fields including pharmaceutical sciences, forensic sciences and pharmacogenomics. Dr. Kupiec is often requested as a speaker at national pharmaceutical conferences and has spoken at ASHP, IACP, ACA and for state pharmaceutical associations.

Dr. Kupiec's vision of entrepreneurial research is manifested by his responsibilities at DNA Solutions and ARL, which include supplying technical expertise and business development in the pharmaceutical and forensic fields. Additionally, Dr. Kupiec offers consultation services for a variety of pharmacy related fields as well as expert witness testimony in the fields of forensic toxicology and pharmaceutical sciences. He has testified in over a hundred cases, both civil and criminal, in federal, state and municipal courts.

His professional experience includes various appointments at Northwest Toxicology Inc. (NWT), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Oklahoma City Police Department. Dr. Kupiec is affiliated with numerous professional organizations, including the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, the Society of Forensic Toxicologists, and Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society.

Dr. Brandt Cassidy, Directory of Laboratory Operations

Dr. Brandt Cassidy is the director of laboratory operations for DNA Solutions. He has over 20 years of laboratory experience in DNA analysis and is recognized around the world as an expert in DNA research and analysis. Dr. Cassidy joined DNA Solutions in 1999 when DNA Solutions purchased Ardmore Biological Analysis, in which Dr. Cassidy served as President and CEO. Prior experience includes serving as a Scientist with the prestigious Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation, and as an adjunct Assistant Professor with Oklahoma State University.

Dr. Cassidy is an experienced lecturer and writer, who has hosted and given numerous lectures to various groups including law enforcement, attorneys, state agencies and scientific breeders. He has authored numerous publications, abstracts and book chapters. Dr. Cassidy is an active member of numerous professional groups including Association of Forensic DNA Analysts and Administrators, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and HITA (Human Identification Trade Association), which is a group of individuals from the DNA field who represent the DNA Industry to the public.

Dr. Cassidy received his bachelor's degree in biology from Iowa State University, he received his Ph.D. in Pharmacology from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.

Dr. James Anstead, Laboratory Supervisor

Dr. James Anstead joined DNA Solutions in 2013 and is the Laboratory Director. Dr. Anstead has over 15 years of experience in molecular biology, population genetics and entomology. His prior experience includes working as a Research Associate at Pennsylvania State University and Oklahoma State University.

Dr. Anstead has published numerous articles and abstracts in a variety of fields including population genetics, plant biology and entomology. He is an active member of a number of scientific organizations including the International Society for Animal Genetics, the Royal Entomological Society, the Entomological Society of America and the American Society of Plant Biologists.

Dr. Anstead received his bachelor's degree in biology from the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK, he received his MS in Entomology from Oklahoma State University and his PhD from University College London.

Greg Thomas, Vice President Business Development

Greg Thomas is Vice President Business Development for DNA Solutions. He has over 30 years' experience in global sales and marketing for chemical suppliers. Greg joined DNA Solutions in April 2010. Prior experience includes serving as vice president of Global Sales and Marketing for Kerr-McGee and Tronox, the Chemical subsidiary.

Greg has a BS in Geomechanics from the University of Rochester and MS in Industrial Administration from Purdue University's Krannert School of Management.

Debra L. Lyon, JD - Business Development Director

Debra Lyon is the Business Development Director for DNA Solutions. She has twenty years of legal experience with 15 years' experience in the health care industry. Debra joined DNA Solutions in October 2012. Prior experience includes serving as vice president for the Orthopedic Institute and Director of Compliance for the University of Oklahoma. She is well versed in public speaking and serving as a liaison for customers.

Debra is an Oklahoma native and received her Bachelor's degree from Oklahoma State University and Juris Doctor from Oklahoma City University School of Law.

DNA Solutions' laboratory is located at the prestigious University Research Park Campus in Oklahoma City. We offer a fully equipped laboratory with some of the nation's leading scientists. DNA Solutions is equipped to process a high volume of samples daily which gives our clients rapid turnaround at affordable prices.

DNA Solutions provides unique laboratory solutions to our customers including paternity and forensic testing in humans and sire confirmation, genotype registries, DNA banking and forensic identification in animals.

DNA solutions is accredited through the AABB which ensures compliance with standards and quality. DNA Solutions Quality and Operational systems have been assessed and determined to meet or exceed the rigorous requirements established by AABB for relationship testing.

This accreditation is granted only to laboratories that achieve quality performance for the parentage testing process which follows strict chain of custody, processing, testing, administration and all aspects of parentage testing activities. There are only about 45 accredited laboratories in the country.

We know that each sample we test is unique and should be treated as such. It is our promise to you that each human relationship test will be performed by a highly qualified staff that must meet educational requirements and pass an annual competency exam. All paternity cases resulting in exclusion are tested twice for quality assurance. Our Director of Operations has over 20 years of experience in DNA analysis and is also recognized across the world as an expert in DNA research and analysis.
