A Center of Excellence in Medical Education and Research

Way back in 1707, the first hospital in Calcutta was built in the premises of the Old Fort at Gerstein Place. The Council of Fort William constructed this hospital. This hospital, initially built for the Europeans, was then known as Presidency Hospital. The hospital was accommodated in a single storied building. Later, in 1768, two houses were purchased in Lower Circular Road for converting them into a full fledged hospital. Located near the Presidency Jail, the hospital came to be known as Presidency General Hospital. Doors were opened to the non-European patients from 2nd April 1770. The Presidency General Hospital was best known as PG Hospital till 1954 when it was named in the Independent India, as Seth Sukhlal Karnani Memorial Hospital. The naming was done to commemorate the name of the great donor Sukhlal Karnani. People started addressing the Hospital as SSKM Hospital.

It was then a practice that the Indian medical graduates used to go abroad for studying post graduation and higher medical research. Government felt necessary of opening Post Graduate Medical Learning Centres. PG Hospital was honoured to be the first Post Graduate Medical Institute in Eastern India in 1957.

From 16th January 1957, the hospital came to be known as The Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research (IPGMER). The institute was inaugurated by Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, the then Prime Minister of India, on 16th January, 1957. Since then the institute is best known as a Medical Learning Centre of Excellence and a Specialty Hospital, with the following objectives.

Today, the institution is best known for study of undergraduate, post graduate and post doctoral level medical courses, specialist medical degrees and diplomas, para medical courses, nursing courses in UG, PG and Under school level and is known as the Bethlehem of advanced medical research.

For long, IPGME&R remained solely a superspeciality referral hospital and post graduate medical institution. New landmark sections were added over the years, such as Respiratory Care Unit, The Bangur Institute of Neuroscience, The institute of Psychiatry, Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences. A nursing school in school level and a Nursing College for UG and PG level nursing courses were set up. UG Course on Physiotherapy and Para Medical courses were inducted. Later, UG level Medcial Courses were introduced in the academic curriculum. The institute in the present century turned into Multi Superspeciality hospital with induction of advanced neonatal department, Human Milk Bank, Genomics, Neuro Medicines and School of Digestive and Liver Diseases.

Manipal hospitals acquires AMRI, gets big presence in East India

M anipal Hospitals, India’s second largest healthcare provider, has acquired an 84% stake in Kolkata-based AMRI (Advanced Medical Research Institute) Hospitals for Rs 2,400 crore.

This makes Manipal Hospitals the largest hospital chain in eastern India to cater to tertiary and quaternary healthcare.

AMRI Hospitals was owned by Emami Group, the diversified conglomerate with presence in FMCG, edible oil, paper and more. Emami will continue to hold a 15% stake in AMRI, while the West Bengal government will have 1% stake.

The deal came to fruition after a prolonged legal battle between Manipal and Emami. Manipal had taken Emami to court to prevent it from selling its stake to any third party. Max Healthcare is said to have offered a higher amount than Manipal initially did. Manipal is said to have later raised its bid price. The deal also required the West Bengal government's nod, given the latter's stake in it.

AMRI has four hospitals – three in Kolkata and one in Bhubaneswar –comprising 1,200 beds, over 800 doctors and 5,000 healthcare professionals. It caters to 5 lakh patients annually.

Manipal Hospitals is funding the acquisition through internal accruals and borrowings. Sources told TOI that the acquisition at an enterprise value of Rs 2,400 crore includes absorbing Rs 1,700 crore debt.

Dr Ranjan Pai, chairman, Manipal Education and Medical Group (MEMG), said, “Manipal Hospitals always had patrons from eastern India and countries in the region like Bangladesh. This acquisition is in sync with our objective to further strengthen our presence and serve the patients in Eastern India - an underserved area when it comes to healthcare. With this addition, Manipal Hospitals would now serve patients in its 17th city in India in Bhubaneswar,” he said. Hospitals in southern India have for years seen a big influx of patients from eastern India because of inadequate healthcare services in the latter region.

Dilip Jose, MD & CEO of Manipal Health Enterprises, said with the addition of AMRI, Manipal Hospitals will have 3,000 beds in eastern India. “We will complete integration and rebranding exercises within six months,” he said. Manipal Hospitals has a revenue of around Rs 5,500 crore, with almost 58% of it coming from the south. Jose said that with expansion in the east and other regions, the south's share would come down.

Aditya Agarwal and Manish Goenka, directors of Emami Group, said they were divesting in healthcare to focus on its core businesses.

Earlier this year, Singapore's sovereign wealth fund Temasek Holdings bought a majority stake in Bengaluru-based Manipal Health Enterprises for over $2 billion, making it the largest deal in the Indian healthcare space.

Manipal acquired Columbia Asia Hospitals for over Rs 2,000 crore in 2020. The following year it acquired Vikram Hospital from Multiples Private Equity Fund in a deal valued at Rs 360 crore.

Overall, Manipal will have 33 hospitals across 17 cities with 9,500 beds, and a talent pool of over 5,000 doctors and 20,000 employees. The acquisition narrows the gap with market leader Apollo Hospitals. The latter's website says it has over 10,000 beds across 73 hospitals, and has over 11,000 doctors.

JIS Institute of Advanced Studies and Research Kolkata, JIS University started its journey in 2019 with an objective to offer translational research based post-graduate education to nurture young minds ready to face the scientific and technological challenges of 21 st  Century. The need of the hour is to offer high quality industry-oriented post-graduate and translational research programs in some of the most relevant areas of science and technology in 21st century.

Currently our institute has three centres – Centre for Data Science, Centre for Health Science and Technology, and Centre for Interdisciplinary Sciences. While the three centres intimately collaborate with each other, the institute as a whole aim to work closely with the industries and R&D Laboratories across the country and also at the global level. The experts from the industries and academia participate both in teaching and research programs in the Institute.

Key Inclusion Criteria:

• Must have the ability to understand and sign a written informed consent form (ICF), which must be obtained prior to initiation of study procedures associated with this trial
• Must have enrolled in Gilead-sponsored UC parent protocol GS US 418-3898 or any other Gilead/Galapagos-sponsored filgotinib treatment study for UC
• Must have completed all required procedures or met protocol-specified efficacy discontinuation criteria in a prior filgotinib treatment study for UC
• Females of childbearing potential must have a negative pregnancy test at Day 1
• Female individuals of childbearing potential who engage in heterosexual intercourse must agree to use protocol specified method(s) of contraception for the duration described
• Willingness to refrain from live or attenuated vaccines during the study and for 12 weeks after last dose of study drug

Key Exclusion Criteria:

• Known hypersensitivity to the study drug
• Any chronic medical condition (including, but not limited to, cardiac or pulmonary disease, alcohol or drug abuse) that, in the opinion of the Investigator or sponsor, would make the subject unsuitable for the study or would prevent compliance with the study protocol
• Females of reproductive potential who are unwilling to abide by protocol-specified contraceptive methods as defined
• Use of prohibited medications as outlined in the protocol
