History of olympic games.

3000 years before, from now, the ancient games took place in honor of Lord Zeus. It was all started from a town named Olympia near the Peloponnese peninsula in Greece. Olympics were first held in 776 BCE. These games were held every 4 years from 8th century B.C. to 4th century A.D. Coroebus was a cook from ancient Greece who first won the first Olympic game, becoming the first-ever Olympic champion by winning a 192-meter race. 

The name Olympic is being given due to the place Olympia in Greece from which it has been started. The ancient Olympic Games were put on a stop when the Romans conquered the Greek empire. When the Romans conquered Greece during the mid of the 2nd century B.C. slowly, the standards of the game started to diminish. Moreover, in A.D. 393, the ancient Olympic Games were stopped.

The rise of modern Olympic games

Then it took another 1500 years when in 1896, the first modern Olympic took place in Athens, Greece. It was possible due to the efforts of a Frenchman named Baron Pierre De Coubertin. He was a person who showed a keen interest in the physical enhancement of people and was dedicated to the work of physical education for people. When he first visited the site of the ancient Olympic Games, he came up with a new scheme to start these games again with a different plan. When he went back to France, he arranged a meeting with the sports authority of France in November of 1892. He then managed to create an Olympic community, which was the leading organization that made the Olympics possible again.

The history of modern Olympics

In 1924 it was the first time when the 8th Olympic Games took place in Paris. It was the first time when the Olympics were held anywhere outside Greece. Every nation desired to be part of the Olympics. Initially, contestants from 14 nations competed in the first modern Olympics.

Greece, due to the original place of the games, is given priority, so the sportsmen from Greece are the first in the march, and the last are from the country in which games are being organized.

Significance of Olympic rings

You must have noticed that the symbol of Olympic has 5 rings with blue, yellow, black, green, and red are the color that comprises the Olympic symbol, which is being represented on a flag. These five rings constitute five continents. The blue ring represents Europe, the yellow ring represents Asia, the black ring represents Africa, the green ring represents Oceania, and the red ring represents America.

Hosting ceremony

On the opening ceremony of the games, several athletes are selected to raise the flag light the Olympic flame. This flame lights up until the last Olympic game. Every sports person who takes part in the game takes an oath, which is commonly known as the Olympic oath. This oath, a vow that every athlete takes that took part in the game, will play its honesty and will perform his best.

The winners are being honored with gold, silver, and bronze medals according to their positions in the game. The medals are being given at the end of every event of games. The athletes are being selected by the sports authority of the respected country to represent their nation, the Olympic Games. It is the duty of the sports authority of the country to select the finest athlete to represent their nation. Whosoever wins at the end of each event medals are given to them with the national anthem of their country being played at the sports arena. 

Selection of athletes

It is the duty of the international Olympic committee to make proper arrangements for the games and the arrangement of commute and proper living facilities for the athletes. The places where the contestants stay during the games is known as the Olympic Village. The primary duties of this committee are to look after the safety, living facility, training grounds, transport for the athletes. Management of stadium and living space is also the duty which this committee has to take care of.

These Olympics games are divided into two segments the summer games and the winter games. Summer games generally take place in the summer season, and winter games take place during mid of February. 

Black day for Olympics

The 5th of September 1972 is considered as a black day in the history of the Olympics. Many terrorists entered the arena and killed several athletes. These games were held in Munich, Germany.

Only with the efforts of Baron Pierre de Coubertin, it was made possible for the Olympics to happen again. We should respect the athletes who sacrifice their comfort and luxury for the respect of their nation, for the peace of the world, and the sake of friendship.

The first Olympic Games took place in 1896 in Athens in Greece . The aim of the Olympic was to bring together athletes from various countries in order to promote world peace. This aim remains the same even today. The Olympic Games include a variety of individual and team sports.

In 1920, the first Olympic flag was presented. The flag contains five interconnected rings upon a white background. Each of the rings stands for one of the five major continents; they are interconnected to symbolize that the world can work towards peace through this international competition.

The rings are blue, yellow, black, green and red. These colours were chosen because at least one of them appears on the flag of every country in the world.

The Olympic Games are held once in every four years and at different location each time. Two locations are chosen each time-one to host the winter Olympics and the other for the summer Olympics. It’s a very special honour to participate in the Olympic Games.

Participants spend years training for this special event. Qualifying for a spot on the Olympic team varies for each sport. However, dedication, skill, motivation, hard work, and desire to win are a part of the right formula for anyone dreaming of participating in the Olympic Games.

For each event the first three prizes are the gold, silver and bronze medals. In 1896, first prizes were silver medals because gold was considered of lower value than silver. At the Olympic Games at st Louis in 1904, gold replaced silver as the first-place medal.

The gold medals presented today are actually made from sterling silver. They are then covered with a thin coat of pure gold.

A Poem on the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, by Bruce Dale Wise

The winter games go on.

Although detainees must sleep in cramped cells on cement floors, and though they must wear shackles with their numbered uniforms, and though repression crosses Xinjiang’s pale locked-down sky, the corporate industrial complex won’t bat an eye.

Although Hong Kong was once a base of civil liberties, and though the communists crush those who want democracy, and though the people now are jailed, practicing free speech, the corporate industrial complex won’t say a thing.

So now in Beijing, the Olympic Winter Games go on, supported by Proctor & Gamble, Visa and Bridgestone, Intel, Allianz, Coca Cola, and Airbnb… The IOC states it will be still aired by NBC.

I did think of dedicating the poem to Mr. Robin, because of his devotion to exposing the brutality of the Chinese communists. I certainly agree with him that the “naming of names” in the poem is important both historic’lly and poetic’lly.

As to the meter of the poem, it is iambic heptameter; however, as Mr. Robin sensed, there are metrical variants, some noted in the poem’s next published places with accents and hyphens; however, L10, on the other hand, has two alterations from exact meter: Proctor & Gamble and Bridgestone, which I have purposefully allowed.

Dear Bruce, thank you for the poem. I agree with Damian. The naming of names is a powerful part of this poem. In particular, the repetition of most of line 4 in line 8 and then the total crystalization of it, without repetition, in line 12 is brilliant.

Both the poet and the reader will like and dislike different aspects of a work. While I appreciate Mr. Mantyk’s keen eye for the architecture of the dodeca, what I liked most about L12 was its internal rhyme, its pois-on-ed inversion, and its acronymic links.

A News Balladic Composition by Bard Eucewelis

A news balladic composition, like dodeca, is a compact passing in elastic, like a cross-bow’s whizz. Although it’s rhythmic verse that’s suitable for singing songs, in prose, it goes along, a flock of words in winging throngs.

Like as an albatross that rises high into the sky; it’s there a moment, then it’s gone before one says good-bye. It vanishes, as it appears—abruptly—melts into… the sea, the sky…one sees a white cloud vaporize in blue.

O, what was there? a simple air, light as a tune by Bach, as if it wasn’t where it was, and it could not be caught, that rides the storm above the archer’s range, but cannot walk, because of giant wings the ancient mariner hath wrought.

And O, the futility of it all !

Russia’s Battle With Extremists Has Simmered for Years

The Islamic State has long threatened to strike Russia for helping the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad, stay in control.

In the past few months, deep in the forbidding deserts of central Syria, Russian forces have quietly joined the Syrian military in intensifying attacks against Islamic State strongholds, including bombing what local news reports called the dens and caves where the extremist fighters hide.

While the world was focused on the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza , this type of skirmishing has been simmering for years in Syria, and the Islamic State has long threatened to strike Russia directly for shoring up the regime of its sworn enemy, President Bashar al-Assad of Syria.

That moment appeared to have come on Friday night with the bloody assault on a Moscow concert hall that left more than 130 people dead. “The fiercest in years,” said a statement of responsibility issued on Saturday by a branch of the Islamic State via its news agency, referring to the long history of brutal terrorist attacks pitting jihadist forces against Moscow.

“They have framed this attack as coming in the context of the normal, ongoing war between ISIS and the anti-Islamic countries,” said Hanna Notte, a Berlin-based expert on Russian foreign and security policy at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies. “This seems to be within the overarching theme of Russia in Afghanistan, Russia in Chechnya, Russia in Syria.”

In his brief remarks on Saturday, President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia did not mention the claim from the Islamic State, but he did threaten to punish those responsible. “All perpetrators, organizers and commissioners of this crime will receive a just and inevitable punishment,” Mr. Putin said.

The Russian president spoke with Mr. al-Assad about counterterrorism cooperation, among other issues, in a phone call on Saturday, the Kremlin said.

Russian state television, dismissing responsibility claims by ISIS, instead suggested that it was a “false flag” operation by Ukraine , possibly with Western backing. The White House issued a statement on Saturday repeating the U.S. assertion that ISIS was responsible.

Russia has unquestionably been in the cross hairs of jihadist organizations for a while. The animosity first welled up during the decade-long Soviet war in Afghanistan, continued through during Russia’s two brutal wars in Chechnya and escalated when the Russian Air Force was deployed to Syria in September 2015.

That October, a group of 55 Saudi clerics issued a statement calling for what they described as a holy war against Russia as punishment for its military intervention in Syria and predicted that Russia would suffer a defeat similar to that in Afghanistan.

Late that October, an Islamic State affiliate in Egypt claimed responsibility for planting a bomb on a charter flight carrying tourists back to St. Petersburg, Russia. The explosion over the Sinai Peninsula killed all 224 people aboard. Shortly after the attack, Dmitri S. Peskov, Mr. Putin’s spokesman, rejected any link between that episode and Russia deploying its forces to Syria.

The Islamic State’s propaganda wing soon released a video of a chant in Russian that included the chorus, “Soon, very soon, blood will spill like the sea.” The lyrics of the song also suggested that Muslim rule would return to Russian regions where about 20 million Muslims form a substantial part of the population, including the Caucasus, Tatarstan and in annexed Crimea.

Russia was keenly aware of the threat. A spate of bloody terrorist attacks carried out mostly by homegrown extremists against a school, a Moscow theater, transportation hubs and other targets left hundreds of Russians dead in the 2000s.

The Kremlin, hoping that no terrorist incident would mar the 2014 Winter Olympics, gave what was considered at least tacit approval for extremists from the Caucasus or from among the Central Asian immigrant communities in Russia to depart. Thousands left. Russia became the second most prevalent language among Islamic State fighters after Arabic, said Colin P. Clarke, a counterterrorism expert with The Soufan Center.

In February 2017, Mr. Putin said that about 4,000 Russians and another 5,000 people from Central Asian countries that were part of the Soviet Union had gone to fight in Syria. “We understand what a huge danger lies in this hotbed of terrorism on the territory of Syria for us, for Russia,” he said during meeting with military personnel.

In looking at the videos from the Russian concert hall attack, Mr. Clarke said that the four attackers seemed well coordinated. He said he suspected that they had trained at an Islamic State camp in Afghanistan and were dispatched to Russia.

“This was not an attack by some radicalized guys acting on their own,” Mr. Clarke said. “This was not their first rodeo — the way they shot, the way they spaced out from each other, the way they moved.”

Although the Islamic State has lost its caliphate in Syria and Iraq, that did not destroy the idea or the cause, said Andrew J. Tabler, a former U.S. government official on security issues in the Middle East and a senior fellow specializing in Syria at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.

Though diminished, the Islamic State, sometimes known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, retains global reach with its different branches. European security agencies said they had thwarted planned attacks in recent years, including one in April 2020, when Germany said that it had foiled a plot by adherents to Islamic State Khorasan Province, or ISIS-K, in a Tajik immigrant community to attack NATO bases.

The wing that took responsibility for the Moscow attack on Friday is known as ISIS-K. The group emerged among opponents of the Taliban in Afghanistan — the K stands for the region of Khorasan, which includes parts of what is now Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran and Turkmenistan.

On March 7, the Federal Security Service, Russia’s main law enforcement agency, said that it had prevented an attack planned by the Islamic State against a Moscow synagogue. The State Department said in a statement Saturday that at the same time the United States had shared an intelligence report with Russia about a possible attack on a concert venue.

“What happens in Syria doesn’t stay in Syria, never has for the whole war,” Mr. Tabler said. “I think that this is payback for the Russians intervening on behalf of the Assad regime.”

Analysts noted that neither jihadist organizations nor ordinary Syrians had forgotten that the Russian Air Force has hit hospitals and other civilian targets, or that Russian cruise missiles have slammed into Syrian cities.

Not long after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the main propaganda arm of the Islamic State spotlighted the war in its al-Naba newsletter, with a headline reading: “Crusader Against Crusader Wars.”

The group celebrated the idea that two Christian powers in Europe were locked in a mutually destructive war, noted Mr. Clarke in an article for Foreign Policy. “This bloody war taking place today, between the Orthodox crusaders — Russia and Ukraine — is an example of the punishment that was unleashed upon them and is forever glued to them,” the ISIS article said.

When it comes to the Islamic State, it appears equally hostile to Russia, the United States and Iran, Mr. Clarke said in an interview. “It is just different flavors of apostate for them.”
