Ph.D Biotechnology at Vignan's Foundation for Science Technology and Research, Guntur Offline Course

Course details.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) is an offered Full-time Doctoral program and it is offered by Vignan's Foundation for Science Technology and Research, Guntur. Ph.D. program shall be for a minimum duration of three years, including course work and a maximum of six years. Extension beyond the above limits will be governed by the relevant clauses as stipulated in the Statute/Ordinance of the individual Institution concerned.

Eligibility Criteria

Master's degree or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions.

Candidates who have cleared the M.Phil. course work with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and successfully completing the M.Phil. Degree shall be eligible to proceed to do research work leading to the Ph. D. Degree in the same Institution in an integrated programme. A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC(non-creamy layer)/differently-abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time.

Admission Details

Selection into Ph.D. programme is evaluated on the basis of the academic performance (% Marks in B.Tech / UG and M.Tech / PG) and the institution last attended for Bachelors' and Masters' degree (Maximum 20% and 30% marks respectively), previous experience (each year 1 mark up to max. 5% marks), publications (2marks/Journal paper and 1 marks for conference paper up to maximum 5 % marks), written test (15% marks) and interview (25%marks)
Eligible candidates have to appear for a written test and interview.
All the candidates are required to qualify in a written test conducted by Vignan's Foundation for Science, Technology, and Research (Deemed to be University). Candidates, who have qualified in the GATE/CSIR/NET/CAT examination, are exempted from the written test for Ph.D. admission. However, they should appear for the interview.
Candidates who are recommended for selection by the concerned department are to be approved by the Dean (RandD) and Chairman, URB respectively. The same approved selection list shall be sent to Dean (Admission) for further action.
Candidates will be admitted into the Ph.D. program after payment of prescribed fees and completion of all the admission procedures.
Admitted candidates will report to the concerned department; a committee appointed by HoD will all to Research Supervisor for each candidate on mutual consent.

Vignan's Foundation for Science, Technology, and Research (VFSTR) was established in 2008. The University Grants Commission (UGC) and the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) have given their approval to the institution. The NAAC has given Vignan University an "A+" rating. The main thing I like in the college was the infrastructure and all the clubs like sports SAC and other social clubs and like NCC AND NSS and life are the campus was good the faculty were friendly not all the faculty some were very harsh

Some of the faculty whom Don’t know how to teach and the current regulation R22 and some rules also some of the lab incharge’s they don’t know anything but always concentrate the students who ask them doubts

The college is near my area and it has NAAC A+ before joining the college we undergo an entrance test if we gain a good score we will be provided with a scholarship and some future concessions you can also join the college based on your +2 marks

How to apply and get admission into PhD program of Vignan’s University? It is a 4 year full time or part-time program. Here is a Step-by-Step Guide on how to do PhD in Vignan University. You can apply for PhD year long. Your application will be automatically processed when Vignan University releases PhD notification. Usually, they give PhD notification 2 times a year.

Vignan university PhD notification will be in June/July/ and the second PhD notification will be in January/Feb. But you can apply beforehand to remove unnecessary last-minute tensions.

The PhD fee structure of Vignan University is 70000/- Rs per annum for both part-time and full-time Ph.D. But in the first year, you must pay extra 10000 as a part of the admission fee. There is no concession what so ever. You can pay fees every semester. There is no condition to pay for the whole annum at once. So this is a big relief. Vignan University PhD fee structure may be high but they pay at the same time a good Stipend.

Vignan university PhD syllabus is mostly taken from UGC NET and UGC SET. There is no particular syllabus mentioned anywhere in the university. When we inquired the administration, they replied to go through UGC prescribed syllabus.

The stipend for PhD in engineering branches is 25000/- Rs per month. This is a handsome stipend and Vignan stands out from other Private and Govt universities. For PhD in science and humanities, the stipend is 18000/-Rs per month.

Usually, Vignan pays stipend by 15th of every month. Each PhD student must apply for this. Once a PhD scholar finishes a month, he or she prepares 30 days’ research progress report. This report must be signed from PhD supervisor and Dean Research and HOD. The three signatures are mandatory with departmental stamps on it. This progress report must be again attached with one letter for requisition of stipend. Again this letter must be signed from al 3 departments that I have mentioned earlier. It may take around 3 days to complete the process. So now, for example, you submit your research report by 3rd of every month, you will receive your stipend of 25k or 18k at any point of time between 10 to 15 dates of the same month.

Full-time PhD from Vignan takes 3 years to complete under some conditions.

You must complete at least 5 Doctoral Committee meetings.
You must at least attend one National and International Conference.
You must at least publish one paper in Scopus or SCA indexed journals.

Once you fulfill the above criteria, you can submit a thesis as soon as your finish 3rd year.

Part-time PhD from Vignan Unversity takes 4 years. You must fulfill the conditions as said above for FT PhD.

You must pass in First Class Masters.
You must also have First Class in UG.
You must pass PhD entrance test.
You must pass PhD interview.
You must submit a Research Proposal.

Once you fulfill the above criteria, you can get admission without any problem. Many PhD candidates in recent years made a mistake not bothering about their UG marks. But after all the process during the certificate verification time, they were caught and their conditional admission stood canceled. So make sure to fulfill all the about conditions to do PhD in Vignan University.

In such a case, you are exempted from PhD written test. But usually, the interview goes normally. This does not mean you will get admission. You must also do well in the PhD interview.

Your Publications will be an additional support to get admission

If you have the previous publication of research paper in good peer-reviewed journals, you can get easily PhD admission in Vignan.

Life of Ph.D. in Vignan University seems to be very busy the whole day. You have 3 main duties.

Doing Invigilations weekly and monthly invigilations for MID1, MID2, MID3, and finally Semester Examinations. This seems to be busy and sometimes irritating for any PhD scholar in Vignan.
Taking Regular Classes. The usual rule is to allow a minimum of 12 hours a week workload for Ph.D. scholars in Vignan. But it goes more depending on the situations.
Departmental Duties are another thing. There are many duties that are related to department like Correction of papers, evaluation, marks posting and duties during events and functions, etc.

I am yet to interview PhD students from Vignan. I will update information here shortly. Keep coming to read this post once in a while

Yes, there is free time but due to the workloads that are entrusted to you as a part of teaching assistantship will diminish your interest to do research during the free time. So usually scholars stay until night in the library after college. That is the time with less pressure.

The College starts at 8 am sharp for a Ph.D. student and ends at 5 pm. A 9-hour workload in a day is mandatory in which research is included. There is a thumb system in Vignan. You must give biometric thumb by 7-55 am in the morning and final thumb after 5-00 pm in the evening. You must maintain 9 hours presence in a day at Vignan. This all will be calculated at the end of every month.

There is no simple process in Vignan University to claim salary for forgetting to give a biometric thumb impression. You must write a letter and print a proof of attendance on that day and get it signed from your PhD supervisor and from the Finance Officer and submit to the clerk. It will again be passed to Registrar of the university. Registrar rejects most of the time without understanding faculty situation. It is all a long process. Instead of this better lose that one day’s salary.

A big “no.” Usually, most of the clerks are headstrong in Vignan to reply to PhD scholars and faculty. There was a situation when PhD student resigned for some time for not treating him properly by Registrars PA. Anyhow it is all adjustment and control of emotion from your part. We cannot change them.

Usually, lunch is provided freely for all of Vignan’s University staff. This a good news to many working here. Accommodation is free to all Ph.D. students with one condition. It is to avail the facility of the canteen by paying 5000 Rs per month. Usually, you will get breakfast, lunch ( you can also have free lunch in the university) Snacks and Supper. You must compulsorily take food from the boy’s hostel’s canteen to get free accommodation.

Yes, each PhD student is given one separate cabin. They call them as research carrels in Vignan. These cabins are located within the library itself. So it is easy to take books and research. The library hours usually form 7-30am to 9-30 pm. and during Sundays from 10-00 am to 5-00 pm. There is a holiday on feast days.

Probably the university gates are closed. Once you enter at 7 -40, you are confined to stay in the campus up to 5. There is no possibility to move out casually and have tea. You need a permission letter from HOD to cross security main gate and you must give yet another thumb while moving out and coming forth. These rules are for the scholars and faculty and students.

Overall: this is very good collage,, infrastructure of this cooloalge is really awesome,,, with all kind of facilty,, like mess, transportation facility,,,,,,,,,,

Overall: The experience of studying at vigyan University is really good. The college has good faculty and infrastructure.Many students from the other countries and other states are joining here so we can experience different cultures. Choosing vignan is a good option.

Placement: Most of the students get placement every year with average package of 4 lpa but last year the placements were not good and most of my seniors didn't got placed

Infrastructure: The infrastructure is really excellent with air conditioned classrooms and smart boards,the lab are great with good Wi-Fi connection. But some of the block's infrastructure need some repairs

Faculty: Faculty are very dedicated and supportive and most of the faculty are from other states. Explain very clearly provides notes and PDF for preparation.

Hostel: The food is very good and the rooms have good maintenance and good security. The hostel surroundings are maintained very well with pleasant environment

Overall: What you see and whats happening here is different there are no placements here honestly..if you have no other choice then join the college.try to get into any better college if possible

Placement: They are literally no placements this year..this is the most honest word there are no placements and 4th year passouts struggling to settle up and to get placed

Infrastructure: Infrastructure is good there are many labs which are really helpful.but they are mostly so old..and out of use and mostly full of dust and not in use anymore

Faculty: Faculty are mostly graduated fron nits and iits and are experienced but they mostly explain things in telugu and not in english which makes it difficult for people of other states

Overall: My college experience has been a mixed bag. The infrastructure is decent, with smart boards in most classrooms and a spacious campus. The hostel facilities are excellent, offering comfort and affordability, although the absence of Wi-Fi is a drawback. Placement opportunities for BBA students are limited, often with a focus on a few companies, and instances of fake offer letters are concerning. The faculty also varies, with some excellent teachers but also those who are less engaging and open. Overall, while there are positives, there's room for improvement in several areas to provide a more fulfilling academic journey.

Placement: The placement scenario for BBA students at our college isn't as promising as one might hope. Often, the companies that visit campus are limited, with a focus on firms like Concentrix. Unfortunately, this means that many students are encouraged to apply for the same positions, leading to a sense of limited opportunity. Additionally, there have been instances where fake offer letters are circulated, creating a misleading impression of placement success, especially to higher management. This situation can be disheartening for students seeking diverse and genuine placement opportunities in their field.

Infrastructure: The infrastructure at the college is pretty decent overall. Most classrooms are equipped with smart boards, although I've noticed that a few of them aren't working properly and could use some maintenance. We also have access to a computer lab, which is really handy. And let me tell you, the campus is huge – it spans across a whopping 42 acres! While there's definitely room for improvement, especially in fixing those smart boards, the size of the campus provides plenty of space for all sorts of activities.

Hostel: The hostel facilities at our college are excellent, providing both comfort and convenience to students. With options priced at 1.2 lakhs for AC rooms and 1 lakh for non-AC rooms, the accommodations are affordable and offer good value for money. The quality of food provided is commendable, and the hostel premises are very well maintained, ensuring a pleasant living environment. However, one downside is the absence of Wi-Fi connectivity, which could be inconvenient for students who rely heavily on internet access for their studies and other activities. Overall, though, the hostel offers a great living experience with just a minor drawback.

Overall: Provide sufficient education good lab facility teachers but as student who was paying 1 lakh fees I don't think i am getting justice for it . smart and intelligent student can grow here

Placement: Almost all Super seniors are placed in recognised companies but our seniors are struggling to get a job due to recession. But vignan can capable of bringing companies hope for best and do best to get job in current scenario.

Infrastructure: Totally 4 blocks are present considering near by college this one is good according to infrastructure trees and plant were maintained properly monkeys are special attraction .library is top

Hostel: Food is top notch . Rooms are very neat and good maintaince. Strict wardens. For safety reasons girls should report in hostel before 6 pm some expections due to permission

The Degree of Doctor of Philosophy is granted for research work in areas recognized by the Academic Departments / Centres of the Institute. The research work shall be an original work characterized either by the discovery of facts, or by a fresh approach towards the interpretation and application of facts, or development of equipment making a distinct advancement in instrument technology. It shall evince the candidate’s capacity for critical examination and sound judgment and shall represent original contribution to the existing knowledge. The Institute is also recognized as one of the centres in the country for Ph.D. programmes under QIP. Facilities for enrolling for the Ph.D. programme as a part time candidate are also available.

All Ph.D. candidates have to appear in the Ph.D-Course work Examination and has to score more than 60% marks failing which the course work will be repeated in next semester.
After successful completion of Course Work, Guide will be allotted to candidates.
Candidate has to appear for Presentation of Topic and Research Proposal within 12-24 weeks after Course work result compulsorily otherwise a penalty of 5000/- will be imposed on the candidate.
RDC presentation will be held in the supervision of External Examiner (Subject Expert).
Finalization/Modification of the topic if any is to be submitted within 8 weeks of the date of RDC, otherwise candidate has to reappear in RDC by submitting the penalty of 5000/-
Evaluation of Modification of the topic will be held and the letter of RDC with the final topic will be published and will be sent to the candidate as well as Guide/Supervisor.
After topic approval from RDC, the Candidate has to present his work within 12-24 weeks of the date of finalization of the topic. This presentation will be internal and will be held in front of the University subject expert and Guide.
After Completion of research work, the candidate has to present his/her work in front of External Examiner (Subject Expert) and has to defend his work.
This pre-thesis presentation must be held in between 36-48 weeks of finalization of the topic.
Candidate has to submit his/her the complete thesis in Examination cell with Plagiarism report in spiral binding (2 hard copies) and 2 CDs/DVDs (soft copies).
Research Advisory Committee will also, check the plagiarism before sending it to evaluators.
After getting an evaluation of thesis and correction/Modification if any, the final date of Viva/Defence will be notified to the candidate as well as one of the thesis evaluators as External Examiner.
Candidate has to submit his/her thesis in hardbound (6 copies) to Examination cell on or before the date of the final defense.

Ph.D. Admission Categories & Requirements

Applicants for admission to the Ph.D. programme shall be classified under any one of the following categories which will be decided and recommended by DRC/CRC.

Full-time Research Scholar

Part-time Research Scholar

a. In-Service Internal Research Scholar
b. In-Service External Research Scholar

An applicant belonging to the above category should possess the following minimum qualifications in appropriate areas to be eligible to apply for admission for the Ph.D. programme of the Institute.

1. Master’s degree with minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 6.0 on a 10 point scale, or 60% marks for the General, GEN-EWS and OBC category.

For SC / ST or PWD candidates, the minimum CGPA requirements may be relaxed to 5.50 on a 10 point scale or to 55% marks.

Post Graduate Degree in Basic Science Or Graduate/Post Graduate Degree in Professional Course selected through a process described through any one of the following:

Scholars who are selected through National Eligibility Tests-UGC NET including lectureship (Assistant Professorship) and GATE.
The selection process through National Level Examinations conducted by MHRD and its Agencies and Institutes such as UGC/IIT/IISc/IISER etc.

2. For candidates other than Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs), B.Tech / B. Arch / B. Pharm degree or equivalent with a GATE / GPAT/NET score (marks) and a minimum CGPA of 7.50 on a 10 point scale or 75% marks, irrespective of the category.

For graduates from CFTIs, the minimum CGPA requirement is relaxed to 7.0 on a 10 point scale or 70% marks.

3. CGPA or percentage of marks in aggregate, in case marks are awarded, of all years / semesters will be considered. If the CGPA is awarded on a scale other than a 10 point scale, proportionate concession to a 10 point scale will be considered.

4. The requirement of GATE / GPAT / JRF / NET score (marks) is not applicable to candidates in ISERS or P-ISIRS or P-ISERS category.

5. Bachelors or Masters from IITs with a CGPA 8.0 and above on 10 scale point scale are exempted from the requirement of GATE / GPAT / JRF /NET.

6. Candidates pursuing Master’s programs in Engineering or Architecture / Planning in the University have CGPA 8.50 and above, shall have a choice of lateral entry to the Ph.D. program after completing first two semesters of the Master’s program.

7. Candidates with MBBS / BDS degree from an Indian Universities / Institution shall have minimum CGPA of 6.0 on a 10 point scale, or 60% in the qualifying degree, irrespective of the category. They are exempt from the GATE / GPAT / JRF / NET requirement.

8. Candidates with Master of Surgery (MS)/ Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from a Indian University / Institute are exempt from the minimum CGPA as well as the GATE / GPAT / JRF / NET requirement.

9. Candidates with a medicine degree from an overseas university / institute should have qualified the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination conducted by the National Board of Examination.

10. Candidates with Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) / Person of Indian Origin (PIO) status will be treated at par with Indian Nationals in the General Category.

Note: (1) Candidates under OBC-NC and Economically Weaker Sections category must submit a copy of valid certificate, issued after 31st March, 2021, as per GOI issued by a competent authority. Reservation shall be applicable as per the GOI Norms.

At the time of registration, the candidates should have at least two years' experience in a Government / Semi-Government organization/Public Sector Undertaking, AICTE / UGC recognized educational institute, or a registered company with an annual turnover of more than Rs. Twenty Crores. They should have permission from the employer for pursuing the Ph.D. program with adequate leave of absence to complete the course work requirements. This requirement of leave of absence is waived off for candidates working within 100 km of the institute. Candidates in P-ISIRS category should, in addition, be regular employees of the institute.

Note: The eligibility conditions given above are the absolute minimum. Departments / Centres may prescribe any requirements over and above these. Reservation is applicable as per extant policies of the Government of India and prescribed by the Board of Governors.

How to Apply for PhD Admission?

Students can apply directly through online mode on the university official website. Candidates must follow the following Steps while applying online Application Form.

Click on the apply online for M.Phil Ph.D. Entrance Exam Button.
Fill all the required details in the columns.
After that upload a passport size photo (size not more than 200kb).
Re-check all the details filled in the application form and then click on the submit button.
Now proceed to pay the entrance cum registration through an available mode of payment.
Selection process is purely based on merit.
Selection process shall be conducted online.
Stipulated dates for a written test and /or interview shall be communicated by the concerned departments/centres to the shortlisted candidates. Simultaneously, the dates shall be uploaded in the portal of each department/centre.
The prescribed qualifications and experience are the minimum required and the mere fact that a candidate possesses the same will not entitle him/her for being called for an interview.
Departments / Centres of the Institute reserve the right to restrict the number of candidates to be called for interview to a reasonable number, on the basis of qualifications and/or experience.
Provision exists to apply in one or more departments / centres. Accordingly, a candidate can submit his/her application in one or more departments through single online application.

The Institute reserves the right to verify the antecedents or documents submitted by the candidate at any time during their period of study. In case it is found that the documents submitted by the candidate are not genuine, then his/her admission shall be terminated, and disciplinary / criminal proceedings will be initiated.
The candidates should ensure that they fulfil all the eligibility conditions as specified. Their admission will be purely provisional subject to confirmation that they satisfy the prescribed eligibility conditions. Mere issue of call letters to the candidates will not imply that his/her candidature has been found eligible.

PhD courses consist of both normal academic classroom sessions and research work.
The research work plays a major role in PhD courses.
The structure of a PhD course includes course work, qualifying examination, research proposal preparation and thesis work.

ANSWER: - The Ph.D. and M.Phil. programs of prestigious University are conducted and guided strictly as per the provisions and regulations dictated by the UGC (Minimum Standards andProcedure for Award of Ph.D./M.Phil. Degrees) (1st Amendment) Regulations, 2018 and subsequent amendments. The entire procedure for admission to the research programs encompasses a Research Entrance Exam (RET) and then an Interview/Viva Voce. The performance of a candidate in the RET is given 70% weightage, and the remaining 30% weightage is given to his/her performance at the Interview.

ANSWER: - Both the full-time and part-time modes are available at University for pursuing its Ph.D. programs and only full time mode is available for M.Phil. program in the desired subjects/fields. These highly-qualitative and prolific research programs are available in a rather broad range of fields/subjects. At University, the minimum time-duration of the M.Phil. and Ph.D. programs is 1.5 Years and 3 Years, respectively, in general.

ANSWER: - Yes, of course. If the University is properly recognized under the section 2(f) of the UGC Act of 1956, and is a prestigious member of the AIU (the Association of Indian Universities). Its M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees granted in various fields/subjects are duly valid across India and the world.

ANSWER: - The following are the main eligibility conditions for participating in the RET: - A rigorous Master’s Degree in the proposed subject/field obtained from any recognized university/institution located in India or abroad, with a minimum 55% marks in aggregate or an equivalent grade. Candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC/Differently-abled categories are given a 5% relaxation in respect of this eligibility criterion. Candidates with an M.Phil. degree in the proposed field/subject, or have qualified the UGC (JRF) Examinations/ NET/ SET/ SELT, etc., will be allowed to appear directly for the interview, without appearing in the RET. Impressive academic records, and any prior experience in research works, will be given additional advantages.

ANSWER: - Candidates belonging to the categories of SC/ST/OBC (Non-Creamy layer)/Differently-Abled, and so on, are given all relaxations prescribed by the Govt. of India and the UGC. These relaxations are provided in form of 5% reduced marks for them at post graduation, and also in the minimum qualifying marks at RET. Thus, candidates belonging to these categories only need to score a minimum of 45% marks at RET, to qualify for the final interview.

ANSWER: - The syllabus or pattern of RET consists of subject-specific matters, and research methodology and aptitude (covering logical reasoning, numerical ability, analytical reasoning, statistics, etc.).Thus, RET will contain a total of 70 multiple-choice questions (MCQs).

ANSWER: - Yes. The holders of M.Phil. degree in their respective fields/subjects are made exempt from appearing in RET. The same is the situation in cases of the aspiring candidates who have qualified exams like UGC-NET (including JRF)/ UGC-CSIR NET (including JRF)/ SLET/ GATE, etc.

ANSWER: - The Application Fee (i.e. the fee for getting participated in RET) can be paid online or offline, like the Application Form. Payment Modes: DD (in Favor of the University) / NEFT/ Cash Deposit.

ANSWER: - Yes, necessarily. Working Professionals those are interested in research at any University are required to obtain the NOC (No Objection Certificate) from their respective employers, in order to avert any intrusion ever during the entire doctoral course.

ANSWER: - Yes. M.Phil. holders are again required to undergo the coursework in Ph.D. at some Universities. However, their prior knowledge in the field/subject will be very supportive to them for learning and performing efficiently during the Ph.D. program.

ANSWER: - Yes, you can pay the yearly course fee as many as in two installments, but well within the yearly session.

ANSWER: - Yes, of course. Many Universities does offer scholarship as well as stipend to the meritorious and talented candidates who undertake research studies at the University. Scholarships are granted to those candidates who come under top 21 by scoring higher marks in RET and interview. And, stipends are provided to those scholars who also give lectures to UG or PG students at the University, in addition to doing their Ph.D. coursework. The amount of monthly stipend will be commensurate with candidate’s qualification and capabilities and may go up to Rs. 20,000.

Vignan’s Foundation for Science, Technology & Research (VFSTR) established in the Guntur District of Andhra Pradesh evolved from the erstwhile. Numerous UNC-Chapel Hill graduate programs received high rankings – 20 were among the top 10 in the nation in their respective categories – as part of U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Graduate Schools” list.

For the third time in a row (2016, 2020 and 2024), UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy is the top pharmacy school in the U.S. The rankings are based on a survey of peers from accredited pharmacy schools across the country and are published every four years.

The Gillings School of Global Public Health was ranked second out of 213 schools and programs of public health in the U.S. for the seventh consecutive rankings period. The Gillings School has also maintained its position as the top public school of public health and has been ranked among the top schools and programs of public health by U.S. News since the magazine first ranked public health schools in 1987. U.S. News & World Report does not rank all graduate programs each year.

“Carolina’s graduate programs are exceptional, and it’s no surprise that our schools are ranked so highly among peer institutions by U.S. News and World Report, as well as other measures,” said UNC-Chapel Hill Interim Chancellor Lee H. Roberts. “Carolina is always proud to be recognized for our dedication to a world-class education. Altogether, 23 programs increased their rankings, including multiple programs in the Gillings School of Global Public Health, School of Nursing, School of Education, Kenan-Flagler Business School and UNC School of Law.

How the University of Tennessee's graduate programs fared in 2024 national rankings

Graduate programs and schools at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville ranked highly in new rankings from U.S. News and World Report.

The organization released its " 2024-2025 Best Graduate Schools " report April 9, which ranks graduate programs and schools across public and private universities nationally. The report covers programs and schools in business, education and law. The rankings for engineering, medical and psychology will be updated later this year.

The top graduate program at UT is supply chain, which ranked fourth nationally. The Haslam College of Business tied for 47th for its full-time graduate programs.

The College of Social Work tied for 24th nationally, and the College of Law tied for 52nd nationally.

The College of Nursing doctoral program tied for 34th.

UT graduate programs ranked high among public universities

Narrowing down to just public universities, several programs and schools jumped in rankings.

Among public universities, the Haslam College of Business ranked 22nd for full-time graduate school programs and supply chain programs ranked third.

Additionally, the College of Social Work ranked 13th, the College of Nursing doctoral program ranked 24th and the College of Law ranked 26th among public universities.

Under the College of Law, legal clinical programs ranked eighth, business-corporate law ranked 13th, health care law ranked 21st and legal writing ranked 21st.

“The rankings this year provide evidence that UT has exceptional graduate programs across a wide range of disciplines,” dean of the Graduate School Dixie Thompson said in a press release. “These rankings are a reflection of the commitment to excellence made by our faculty, staff and students.”

Previous rankings for University of Tennessee graduate programs

UT has several programs ranked highly from previous years.

Printmaking programs are tied for UT's highest overall program ranking at fourth nationally.

Nuclear engineering at seventh. UT occupies the 10th spot for "Best Library and Information Studies Programs," along with school library media tied at 13th and digital librarianship tied at 14th. Under the law school, clinical training tied for 19th.

Physics (in the College of Arts and Sciences) tied for 55th

What is the U.S. News and World Report?

U.S. News and World Report is a media company well known for its "Best" rankings, including university rankings for prospective students. For the "Best Graduate Schools" rankings, the organization evaluates programs and schools in disciplines including business, education, engineering, law and nursing based on expert opinion and statistical data.

Research for these rankings began in fall 2023 through early 2024. The organization used surveys of 2,225 programs sent to approximately 5,766 academics and 10,941 professionals to rank the programs within the six main disciplines.

Correction: A previous version misstated which graduate programs and schools received new rankings at the University of Tennessee. UT's business, law and social work colleges and the nursing doctoral program had new rankings.

School of Business graduate program surges in top rankings

A U.S. News & World Report methodology change rewards schools for job placement, graduate earnings

The UC Riverside School of Business increased 20 positions in a U.S. News & World Report 2024 graduate school ranking released this week. UCR’s business school was the benefactor of a methodology change this year that places greater emphasis on post-graduation earnings and how quickly graduates found jobs.

The School of Business’ Master of Business Administration program ranked No. 90 on the business school list, released Tuesday, April 9. Though 506 accredited institutions were canvassed, only 124 U.S. graduate-level business programs provided sufficient information on post-graduation earnings and job placements to merit inclusion on the U.S. News list.

“The school’s ascent in the rankings is a testament to its strategic initiatives, such as the expansion of its facilities and the enhancement of its academic offerings, which align with the evolving demands of the global business landscape,” said Rami Zwick, associate dean of graduate programs for the School of Business.

The rankings released this week are based in part on reputational surveys sent to more than 15,000 academics and industry professionals, including corporate recruiters. In the surveys, deans, program directors, and senior faculty are asked to judge the academic quality of a program.

In addition to the surveys, scoring factors selectivity — gauged by graduate exam test scores; undergraduate GPA, and acceptance rate. About half of the score is based on a change this year that places greater emphasis on earnings — assessing post-graduate salaries by profession — and successful job placement. The revised job placement metric rewards business schools when their graduates get jobs quickly — either when they graduate or within three months of graduation.

Separately, the business school’s part-time MBA program was ranked No. 73, an increase of three positions from the past year. That ranking was among 269 universities.

In fall 2024, the School of Business will mark the 55th anniversary of its founding and the 30th anniversary of the A. Gary Anderson School of Management with the opening of a new 63,400-square-foot academic building .

UCR’s School of Education was ranked No. 86 out of 237 positions in the graduate school rankings, which considered only doctoral-level education programs. Last year, the school ranked No. 80.

The education rank is based on research expenditures; assessments by education-school and graduate-school deans and by professionals including recruiters and school superintendents; total degrees awarded; student-faculty ratio; faculty awards; and selectivity, measured by acceptance rates.

U.S. News this week postponed publication of its rankings for medical and graduate engineering programs after some universities questioned the rankings methodology for those programs.

U.S. News & World Report, the standard-bearer among college rankings, publishes its anticipated undergraduate rankings every fall. In the most recent rankings, released in fall 2023, UCR climbed 13 positions to No. 76 overall among U.S. private and public universities. UCR was ranked No. 2 nationally in social mobility, which considers the degree to which a university elevates its graduates to a higher standard of living.

Master’s degree programs at the Emory University Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing are once again the best in the nation, according to U.S. News and World Report’s 2024-2025 ranking of graduate schools.

The school’s Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and Master of Nursing (MN) programs claimed the No. 1 spot for the second consecutive year, and its Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program retained its No. 6 standing from 2023. Last September, U.S. News ranked the school’s undergraduate programs No. 3 nationwide.

“It takes a team to achieve this level of excellence in consecutive years, and I’m grateful to our school community for the work that has brought us to this place,” says Dean Linda McCauley, PhD, RN, FAAN, FRCN. “While the rankings are gratifying, what they represent in terms of student preparation, research excellence, and clinical expertise is the most rewarding. We intend to keep raising the bar for our students, the nursing profession, and the patients and communities who benefit from our efforts.”

Multiple graduate specialties at the School of Nursing were also ranked nationally, including:

DNP Gerontology-Primary Care – No. 3
MSN Adult Primary Care Nurse Practitioner – No. 3
DNP Gerontology-Acute Care – No. 4
MSN Acute Care Nurse Practitioner – No. 4
MSN Family Nurse Practitioner – No. 4
DNP Family Nurse Practitioner – No. 5

All specialties rose or maintained their ranking from last year, with the DNP gerontology-primary care program rising to No. 3 from No. 6.

The school’s rankings reflect tremendous growth, with enrollment increasing by 38% and total research funding growing from $12.8 million to $32.3 million over the past five years. The school has been in the top five among all nursing schools in National Institutes of Health grant funding for nine consecutive years and has amassed more than $8.6 million in Health Resources and Services Administration community partnership grants.

U.S. News assesses both nursing master’s programs and Doctor of Nursing Practice programs on their research activity, faculty resources, student excellence, and qualitative ratings from experts. Information on their ranking methodology can be found here .

University of Delaware snags high marks in latest U.S. News graduate-school rankings

New graduate school rankings from U.S. News and World Report just dropped.

They evaluate business, education, fine arts, health, law, library studies, nursing, public affairs, science and social sciences graduate programs, according to the outlet . Medical school and engineering rankings have been delayed.

Several University of Delaware programs snagged high marks in the Tuesday release, with its physical therapy program remaining in the nation's top-three, down from No. 1 to a close No. 2, and an inaugural ranking at No. 32 for its speech-language pathology program.

"As we continue to enhance and expand our excellent graduate programs to meet the needs of our students and society, it is gratifying to see the expertise and hard work of our faculty and staff nationally recognized,” said President Dennis Assanis, in a press release April 9.

“We are proud of the positive impact that our graduate students are making on the world, and we look forward to even greater successes ahead empowered by their UD education.”

U.S. News' general methodology has come under fire as of late. This year saw some updates . Last year, more than a dozen medical schools and more than 40 law schools ranked in the span of a few months announced they would no longer provide information to the outlet, which has ranked such programs since 1983. Debate there continues.

Staff Member Receives 2024 President’s Meritorious Service Award

Rebecca Simon from the J. Mike Walker ’66 Department of Mechanical Engineering is being recognized with a 2024 President’s Meritorious Service Award. She will receive the award during the university-wide awards ceremony on Wednesday, April 10th.

The President’s Meritorious Service Award honors a select group of staff members, supervisors, and teams for their outstanding contributions to Texas A&M University. Recipients exemplify the Aggie core principles and are held in the highest regard for their professionalism, dedication, and contributions to the university. Rebecca completed her bachelor’s degree in agricultural leadership and development from Texas A&M University in 2008. Following graduation, she began her career at the Texas A&M School of Public Health. In 2012 she joined the College of Engineering as a program specialist for Engineering Academic and Student Affairs working with various undergraduate programs.

Simon joined the mechanical engineering department in 2017 and now serves as the assistant director of graduate advising.

“I am extremely honored to be a recipient of the PMSA,” said Simon. “My success would not be possible without the incredible support I have received from the mechanical engineering leadership and my colleagues starting from the first day in the department.”
