In the duration of my middle school years, I maintained excellent grades, except I had just one issue that held me back from a satisfying life. That issue was the fact that friends came very hard to me in my middle school years. Here, it was very easy to make friends and have a great social life, since no hard work was required as a kid. Middle school, however, was a great challenge for me.

My 16th Birthday

Favorite Quote: Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent. -Victor Hugo

“I’m sorry Hannah, I shouldn’t have brought you out here tonight.” My mother said as her eyes began to fill with tears. It was a mid-August night in Avondale Arizona. It was a dry kind of heat out, where there’s no breeze just stagnant hot air that makes your clothes stick to you. Feeling awkward that she was only addressing me, I replied, “It’s okay mom, I don’t mind.” And truthfully I didn’t; moments like these were and are to this day; characteristically us. See this was the day of my sixteenth birthday; all my friends had been looking forward to their “sweet sixteen” all year and well mine didn’t quiet pan out like I thought it would. My mom had wanted to take all of her at home children out to dinner to celebrate the momentous occasion of her “baby” turning sixteen instead of all of us going in different places. She wanted us all to celebrate together with Ben not watching TV, Erika not at work, Jordan not doing her hair, and myself not reading in my room. So we all piled in my granddads old Cadillac and set off for a fine meal at the local Applebee’s. Although the car made it to Applebee’s without difficulty, on the way back it over heated and shut off. We managed to get it in the parking lot of The Best Funeral Services. Not the greatest place to have a birthday party, although an up side was the fact that there weren’t any funerals in procession. “Who could we call?” My older sister Erika addressed my mother. “I don’t know.” My mother replied rather absent-mindedly. “Isn’t this just great,” added Ben always sarcastic, “I wanted to watch that movie that was coming on FX tonight.” Erika whom always acts practical and responsible, continued, “What about tisa and Jeff?” “I don’t want to bother Tisa, she’s been so sick lately.” My mother reasoned. They ran through a list of possible candidates whom could be persuaded to help us out. All the while, we sat in the stifling car. I was sandwiched between my brother Ben and my sister Jordan: feeling over heated and a little claustrophobic. “It’s too hot in here, I need to get out of this car.” I was thinking while they continued on discussing possible strategies of getting us home. “Could we maybe call Pastor Jay?” Erika was inquiring. When at last the pioneering Jordan pushed her car door open and announced, “I’m getting out of this hot car and stretching my legs.” I followed her lead and abruptly swung out of the car. Sadly the air was no better outside the car as it was in it. Summer nights in Arizona are hardly ever below the mid nineties. The night smelt of Avondale, the damp scent of cornfields and fresh air. With sweat beads still forming on my head, I looked at the book in my hands entitled I Am the Messenger; my sister had bought me for my birthday. “Well, I’ll catch up on some reading.” I thought as a settled down under a streetlight, flipping the book to page 1. I was almost done with the first page when my mother shouted, “Don’t wonder off! Get back over by the car.” I looked at the distance from me to the car and estimated it at probably three feet. With a sigh I got back up and sauntered over to the car. “We called pastor Jay, he’ll be here soon. I don’t want you guys wondering off.” She informed me as if it was some secret agenda of mine to sneak off into the moonlit night. I turned to look at Jordan and we both rolled our eyes in synchronization. It wasn’t the fact that we were stranded that bothered us, it was the way she handled the situation that did. “I wish we didn’t have to bother Jay, but I just don’t know what else to do.” My mom whined as we all sat around the outside of the Caddie. Jay lived a good forty-five minutes from where we were so we had a while to wait. “I shouldn’t have taken the car out tonight, it’s too late now of course, but I should have done better,” She continued with no need for encouragement from us, “I hate always having to depend on other people.” “It’s okay mom, Jay will be here soon and we’ll go home.” I said. “Yeah, I suppose so.” She nodded in agreement with a hint of discouragement on her face. “I just wanted you to have a good birthday, but instead were stuck here and I can’t fix it.” “It’s not your fault mom, none of us knew that the car was going to over heat. It’s fine.” Erika told her. “I’m going to miss the movie.” Ben informed us as though him catching some action flick on FX was what we were concerned with. My mom shot him an irritated glance. “We’ll be lucky if we get home at all and all Ben’s concerned about is some freaking movie! “ She shouted at all of us. “I just wanted to see the movie, I’m sorry.” Ben added as he walked away. We sat in silence as mom sat in the car not talking as cars whizzed by. I thought it was odd that not a single car stopped to offer us assistance. Did they think we liked to spend our Thursday nights hanging out in the parking lot of funeral homes? I began singing a song that I heard quite frequently over the summer while at El Nathan Christian Camp Grounds to fill the silence, “I will fear no evil, for my God is with me. And if my God is with me, whom then shall I fear? Whom then shall I fear? …” That being the only line of the song that I remembered, I sang it repetitively. Jordan picked up on the song and began singing what she could recall of it. We continued to the sing the song over and over again, remembering more of it every time around as we sat on the hot trunk of the car that slightly burned our legs. Our somewhat off key voices grew louder as we became more accustom to the song. After awhile we were laughing and clapping along with it, as well as throwing in some cheesy dance moves to make the song more entertaining. We got Erika singing along with us even though she didn’t know the words and Ben was laughing with us, but not attempting to learn the tune. Eventually my mom came around the side of the car to see what was making us laugh so hard and smiled at the sight of us all playing around and having a good time. “What are you guys doing?” She questioned with a puzzled expression. “Singing!” We announced as though that was the most natural thing to do at a funeral home. She encouraged us to sing more songs to fill the long silences and we did. We were all laughing and I was actually enjoying myself. After the songs were over we started reminiscing of when we were younger and talking about funny trips we’d taken where everyone was always fighting and how anytime we tried to go to California our tire would pop. We were telling jokes and singing more songs when Pastor Jay arrived to help fix our car. “You guys don’t look like you need rescuing.” He commented as he got some antifreeze out of his trunk. “Maybe we don’t.” My mom said smiling. We eventually got our car jumped off and made our way home, but I realized as we were driving that the car breaking down had actually done more to bring us together than an actual celebration would have. It started off rough and we fought and got annoyed with one another, but in the end, I discovered how much my family means to me. If our car hadn’t broken down, I would have gone to my room to read, Ben would have watched his movie, Jordan would have done her hair, and Erika would have found some work to do and we would not have had the chance to spend some quality time together. Although I would have never wished for our car to break down, it turned out to make my birthday so much more special then I could have imagined. My family hadn’t had the opportunity to just talk in so long that I had forgotten how nice it could be to simply spend time with them. It may not seem like that much of an epiphany, but I learned that a bad circumstance can do you a wealth of good if you are willing to look past the negative and find the positive.

An Essay on My Most Memorable Birthday [With PDF]

Birthday, TAdaaa! The most exciting day of everyone’s life. A day full of fun and eat. Here in this essay paper, we are going to cover a birthday topic that is My most memorable birthday, so let’s jump into the topic!

Essay on My Most Memorable Birthday feature image

Birthdays are a lot of fun. Your friends come together to celebrate your life and have a great time together. In my short life, I have seen a few birthdays. For the most part, they have been all the same. My parents send out the invitations, my friends dress up and come at the appointed hour, we eat a lot of food, play a lot of games and have a lot of fun.

One of the problems with birthdays though, all the good ones seem to melt together. It is hard to distinguish one birthday from another. They all seem to have a common theme and one good party is the same as the one previous to it and the one previous to that one.

Sometimes it is hard to pick one but not this time. I have one particular birthday that has stood out in my memory and while it does not haunt me it does not leave my memory banks. It is just kind of there reminding me that not all birthdays are memorable for good reasons. This particular birthday was not marred by accidents, injuries, or disasters. And the memorable part came after it was over.

It all took place on my 19th birthday, a year out of high school. I was a freshman in college at the time and my friends who attended were my classmates. It was not an exotic affair, just friends gathering together to celebrate a birthday over a nice dinner in town.

None of us had a car so we took the bus to the restaurant. This particular restaurant was not that expensive but it was very birthday friendly. That allowed us to have a good time without disturbing other dinner guests. I do not remember what we ate but it was good. That much I do remember about the food. the cake was shaped like a heart because my birthday falls on Valentine’s Day.

I have become tired of heart-shaped cakes as I seem to have one every year. My birthday wishes now are to get a different shaped cake next year. Before they presented me with their gifts they had to sing Happy Birthday to me which I appreciated but thought they could have skipped that part.

Of course, they did not have to but friends being friends always give something nice to their buddy on their birthday. This part I enjoyed immensely but it did not separate this particular day from all the previous ones. I always received gifts n my birthday.

I am not sure how long the party lasted but it could not go to late as our college had a curfew and we had to be back by 10 or we would be in trouble, birthday or not. By all accounts, this was not a memorable birthday. It was the standard party most people receive on their special day. Good friends just gathered together for a great time of fun and food.

What made it memorable was the news I received after I returned to my college dorm room. My family had called with sad news. One of my best childhood friends had passed away earlier that night. We were friends since before we went to elementary school and we faced school life together. He was more outgoing than I and he had a lot of friends.

What made it hard to fathom was my friend did not have a dangerous or contagious disease. Nor did he take a lot of risks when participating in different activities. No, he died of appendicitis. It had burst before the doctors could save him.

Maybe I would have understood it better if he had not died from such a simple medical procedure. There are times I think about my friend and that keeps this birthday standing out above all the rest.

So how was this essay on My Most Memorable Birthday, do share your thoughts on the comment section, I will love to see your comments!

My Birthday Essay

Birthdays are often a joyous occasion for a person and their loved ones. People celebrate their birthdays in different ways, for instance, by partying, praying, or going on a trip. Here are a few sample essays on “My Birthday”.

100 Words Essay On My Birthday

My favourite day of the year for me is my birthday, which is on December 20. It's the day when I can do whatever I feel like, and I am made to feel extra special by my parents. My birthdays are always planned in advance. My parents always made an effort to prepare for my birthdays. When I was younger they bought me new clothes, new shoes, and new accessories so that I could dress my best.

My Birthday Essay

They also used to take me to the market and get me to buy may favourite toys and video games. As I got older, slight changes emerged in the way we celebrate my birthday. Now, instead of receiving toys as a gift from my parents, I receive money. My family and friends gather around me to sing "Happy Birthday" as I cut the cake, and shower me with their blessings and good wishes.

200 Words Essay On My Birthday

I believe that it is a privilege for us to get to celebrate our birthdays, for a huge chunk of children does not get this opportunity. I believe birthdays are also a time for us to realise our responsibilities and take a step towards fulfilling them. I always make different plans for my birthday every year, but one thing that is common every year is that my dad and I visit the temple and give out sweets to the poor as we leave. It brightens my morning to see the children's smiles.

Gifting The Needy | Because my birthday falls in the chilly month of December, I made the decision last year to purchase winter clothing for poor and needy families living close to my home rather than spending money on a party and decorations on my birthday. My parents supported and helped me when I discussed this idea with them.

The Celebrations | We went shopping for clothing in the afternoon, including sweaters, jackets, socks, gloves, and other necessities, and distributed them among underprivileged children. The greatest gift they gave me was their joy and well wishes. We had a simple family dinner after returning home, which was a great way to end my day.

500 Words Essay On My Birthday

I, like many of us, am always excited about celebrating my birthday. In fact, my planning of my birthday celebrations begins weeks and months before the actual day. I also get my parents to brainstorm and suggest how we would celebrate my birthday.

One thing I always ensure is that my birthday celebrations should involve the most special people of my life, that is, my family and friends, and that I should also do some good to the needy and underprivileged children. Here is a detailed explanation of how I celebrated my birthday in one of the previous years.

Celebrations At School

On my birthday, which was on December 20’ 2008, the whole school sang a birthday song for me in the morning assembly. I wore my favourite dress to school instead of the school uniform and distributed sweets among all students and teachers. For my friends who reside far from my house, I planned a party.

We went for lunch, my father picked us up and drove us to a restaurant. They were all talking happily as they ate lunch. After lunch and dessert, my father dropped off my friends at their houses before we returned home.

Evening Celebrations

I had a variety of plans for the evening. A birthday party was planned by my parents at home with lovely decorations and a big theme cake.

The Cake | The decoration was done by an event planner, and the cake was also customised. It was of light blue and pink colour and had detailing made of cream-like flowers and leaves, with two candles attached at the top of it. It was made of two layers, the first layer was of strawberry flavour, and the other was of vanilla.

What We Did | By 5:30, all of my friends and family members had arrived wearing party clothes. They all wished me birthday. Around six o'clock, we had begun playing games like races, musical chairs, and other activities. After playing, I cut the cake, and everyone handed me gifts. Although I had to wait, I was very eager to open the gifts. After the cutting of the cake, dinner was served, with a few starters, and both vegetarian and non-vegetarian main course. I also gave the guests a return gift as an expression of thanks. The return gift consisted of a small ‘thank you’ card and some chocolates.

Gifts I Got

Everyone went back to their homes after dinner, and I started opening the gifts, no matter small or big. I received one Barbie doll set, some chocolates, video games and one handmade card made by my friend. I became emotional on seeing the handmade card as it was beautifully crafted, having some pictures of my friends attached to it. I kept this card safely inside my almirah so that it remained as it is and did not get lost.

My parents and I were feeling incredibly exhausted, but we were happy that we had a great party and a meaningful day. My parents got emotional thinking that time was flying by too fast, and soon I would grow up enough to get married and leave their house.

Sixteenth Birthday 3 Pages 638 Words

My Sixteenth Birthday              It was late January, 2000, a memorable time of my life. It was Super Bowl Sunday and one of the coldest days we had in a while. The ice and snow in the trees made is look like a winter wonderland outside. My family and I were settled in the den, feeling the warmth of the wood burning in the fireplace, anticipating the long awaited football game. However, I had other things on my mind this day and it surely was not a football game.              My parents constantly asked me weeks before what I wanted for my sixteenth birthday in February. I thought of many things, but the one thing I really wanted was a new puppy. I really was not sure of how they would react to this idea, so I hesitated to let them in on my thoughts. I was not prepared to receive the rejection and heartbreak that I knew I would feel if they said no.              For weeks I purchased the newspaper, searching the ads, looking for that perfect puppy. I knew what I really wanted, and that was a Chinese Shar Pei. I had never seen anything so lovable in my life. With every picture, I could imagine how one would feel cuddled in my arms. The Chinese Shar Pei has loose skin that is literally covered with wrinkles from head to toe. I had heard the phrase that something could be so ugly that it was cute, and these puppies fit this description to a tee.              What seemed like hours of silence as my family and I sat staring at the television, the question come up again. "Nichole, what do you want for your birthday?" My heart felt like it stopped. I looked at my Mom and then at my Dad with the biggest smile on my face and              before I could think, I told them. At this point I felt like they could actually hear my heart beating, it felt as if it would burst out of my chest. Then the answer came from my father. "Really Nichole?" "What kind of puppy do you want?" I know my mouth fell open and hit the floor. I thought, could this reall              ...

Personal Narrative: My 18th Birthday Essay

"Happy Birthday", my mom screamed out and scared me the morning of June 9. But it was surprising and nice of her since she wished me before anyone else. It was my eighteen birthday and it was my day. While looking out the big windows in my room, I thought to myself, I will do what satisfies me today, but wasn't quite sure what? I didn’t receive any calls from my friends, or other relatives. Nobody was home either besides my mom with whom I can’t make plans because she got her own work to do. It depressed me because it seemed like this was going to be one boring eighteen birthday . After half an hour of waiting for someone to call and my sister and dad to come home also thinking about what to do. I gave up and went to take a shower. When …show more content…

I thought about checking my phone and when I did I had seven missed calls and two voicemails. One from my boyfriend and the other my friend wishing me happy birthday. It was great to hear from them finally. That’s when I called my boyfriend to hang out. Unfortunately he said he was busy, I was very disappointed. It was 2:00pm, I spent almost the whole day roaming around the house doing nothing, just thinking about everyone else. How come everyone was busy today? I assumed half of my friends forgot it was my birthday. At 3:45pm our door bell rang. Out of curiosity I ran downstairs to check and it was my childhood friend Trisha. While wishing me happy birthday, she gave me a friendly hug. Then we went to my room. There she took out pictures from when we were young, candy jewelry we played with when we were young. It was basically a reminder to me that no matter how old any of us get, we’ll always be stupid little kids at heart and will stick together. It was a wonderful and a thoughtful gift, but that was not it. She went outside to her car to get something, and when she returned it was another gift, a beautiful blue dress with a design coming out from the left side and a slight cut on both sides. Trisha stayed at my house up to 7:00pm. We talked, ate snacks, watched T.V, and had a lot of fun. It would have been more fun if my sister and friends were here. At 7:15pm Trisha told me to change into the dress she got me, and that we were going to go out.

Personal Narrative: Juilliard School Of Dance

When I woke up from my nap, it was already 11:00 pm! Why does time go by so fast when you don’t want it to? I got up and went to my vanity. On the vanity, lay an old picture of my Dad in his uniform. I miss him very much. I put on the gorgeous necklace he gave me when I was 9. Knowing that if anything bad happens, he is there.

Intimacy Shelters-Personal Narrative

I didn’t plan to spend this hot August day like this...my mom told me on my birthday, my 5th to be exact, that this day would be special, little did my curious mind know that I would be getting something that every kid my age would die for. I would be getting my first best friend.

Personal Narrative: Dungeons And Dragons

December 17th, that is my birthday. Having switched school counties in middle school my birthdays always had to find the best of both worlds between two different groups of friends. Well, I had recently discovered the magic of social storytelling in games like Dungeons & Dragons. At this point three of my friends and I would meet up every two weeks for a late night session of fantasy tabletop role-playing. These nights were the high points of our social lives; it only made sense that I wanted ALL of my friends to experience this awesome game. So, I invited everyone asking them to come over around 6:00 p.m. and expect to be there until around midnight. I loaded up on snacks, came up with an adventure for us all to go through, and actually cleaned a little. Everything was set up for everyone to have fun, eat snacks, stay up late, and hopefully find a new hobby. Unfortunately that is not at all what happened.

Personal Narrative: My Experience With Severe Alzheimer's Disease

It was my sisters sixth birthday, and my mom was putting on a birthday party for her, the house was decorated with orange, pink and white streamers, the colors meshed like a beautiful sunset that hung from one corner to the next, with colorful balloons attach to the streamers like a nail in the wall, and as the sun shown through the curtains, the room seemed more lively and happy with every ray that shown through. The atmosphere of today was very fitting for my little sisters happy personality, even though the weight of the news my family received a couple weeks before still lingered, that my Grandma had a severe case of alzheimer's disease my family tried to be strong and happy for Marie, but I saw right through everyone's happy

Descriptive Pic Memoirs

My 2nd birthday. There are silly blues clues decorations everywhere. There are polka dot balloons, sweet yummy cake, and big shiny presents. There is a camera pointed at my face. The faint sound of muffled talking goes through my head. I hear the sweet words of “Happy Birthday” several times. As I open my gifts, I hear the rustling of the slick wrapping paper. My nose picks up the scent of the smoke from the birthday candles.

Over Spring Break-Personal Narrative

I had Golden Puffs, Angel had Captain Crunch. After breakfast we went outside to play with the kittens. They have four cats, two grownups, and two kittens. Smokey, Tiger, Princess, and the Kinga. We think that princess is pregnant because her stomach is rounded and is hard, and she won’t let anyone near her belly she’s really protective over it. But she still let us pet her. We played outside for a little bit with Faith and Brennan before we went inside. At around 5 they took me home, we talked about a lot of serious things before I got out of the car. It was nice to be able to talk about things that we never really get to, or that we never really talk about. It brought us a lot closer and it was good to know that I could to them about anything. After we were done talking I went inside and told my mom all about what I did and how much fun I had. I feel like I made some really good memories with them. I would definitely do it again, it was a really good experience for me. It was something that I’ve never done

Personal Narrative: My Senior Year

I didn’t really get into writing until my senior year. I had always been in Honors English (you know, the class for all the smart kids who were at a high school reading level in second grade). I had this teach for Honors 11, Ms. Mason, the coolest woman I’ve ever met in my life. My junior year wasn’t super good for me, but she encouraged me to keep trying and take her AP Lang class next year. We focused a lot on non-fiction research writing and I loved it. My senior year I also took creative writing with Mr. Day. Worst decision ever. Not only was the class chock full of freshman and seniors who don’t care, but Mr. Day was the type of person who graded you on how much you wrote like him. If he didn’t like your writing style (and he hated mine)

My Picture Day Research Paper

Today was a pretty normal day nothing really big happened. Although it was picture day so I made sure I got ready for it. This morning I woke up early so that I could print some makeup to put on. I made sure to add some bronzer on it cause I'm so pale. Then I 3D printed me some eggs and waffles. It was really good. And got my clothes on which are all made of recycled plastic because I'm eco-friendly. Mom wasn't feeling so good today so she just called a self driving uber to come pick me up and bring me to school. She also gave me back my iPhone 36S because I cleaned my room last night.

Personal Narrative: The Nurse Who Changed My Life

Typically, early morning phone calls on your birthday bring well wishes and kind words from friends and family, but that has not always been the case for my wife. Just before seven o’clock A.M. on her twenty-fourth birthday our telephone rang. It was not an old friend singing happy birthday, or our friends that we had plans with later that evening. The voice on the other end of the line was her father delivering news that would change Lisa’s life forever. Her mother was being rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. She had collapsed in the kitchen while cooking their breakfast. Judy remained unresponsive for one week and the decision was made to remove life support. She passed within hours of this decision, but the impact those few days had

College Admissions Essay-Mistakes And Guilty Conscience

It was a bright, sunny day. Kids came spewing out of houses like bugs. I remember that day, it was so perfect as if nothing could go wrong. I knew it was going to be an exciting and exhilarating day. Coincidentally, there was a birthday party. One of my closest friend is holding a party filled with delicious food and joyful smiles. The house was decorated with streamer and balloons. Balloons of every color imaginable. As the smell of BBQ wafted around the neighborhood , laughter was heard all around. There was even a little kiddie pool crowded with toddlers and teenagers trying to splash each other. My best

Personal Narrative: The Man In The Maze

My grandpa and I were pretty close. We shared the same birthday, February 27th. From the stories I’ve heard, he kept telling my grandma how his granddaughter was born on his birthday. From the first time he held me, he had a connection to me. We called ourselves special friends. My 6th birthday was one of the greatest we ever shared. My whole family came over to celebrate and we had a tremendous time. It was time to cut the cake. When everyone finished singing he told me to blow out the candles. I asked him to blow them out with me but he explained that it was okay, he had enough birthdays by himself, so I could take over blowing out the candles. “No, this will always be our birthday.” I was six years old at that time but that’s the story my family tells me.

12th Birthday Research Paper

MY 12th birthday of 8th grade year was very disappointing. Ever since I was interested in playing instruments the only thing I really wanted to play was the guitar. In 6th grade I told my mom that I wanted a guitar, she told me at that time we couldn’t afford one at the time I had asked for. I understood why with us just moving to Oklahoma and just getting settled into our apartment. Throughout my middle school years around my birthday, I would always ask my mom if we could get one this year. until 8th grade year when she finally said I can get a guitar.

Mammy Made Me The Most Important To Me Narrative Essay

I turned fourteen today, it has been so many years since I have enjoyed my birthday. Mammy made me a cake, helped me dress in my new clothes. She seems like a new person now that the Union collapsed, she walks with a spring in a step and talked about the future. She speaks about how we can move to somewhere else, start a new life. I am very excited about what is to come. I am studying hard with Babi, mostly because I love doing it and makes me feel powerful and capable. Also so I can go to college one day, so if I get work hard enough I can get a scholarship. Tariq can come study with me, he would love it. He came home today, Tariq, and we spent the day talking and laughing. He gave me flowers and a pretty necklace with a sun and moon on it.

Opinion It’s not so ‘terribly strange to be 70’

my 16th birthday essay

I turned 70 today, a young age for an older person to be, but it is the oldest I have ever been by a long shot. It has been well over six decades since I learned in arithmetic how to carry the one, and the rest has sped by like microfiche.

One big juicy, messy, hard, joyful, quiet life. That’s what my 70 years have bequeathed me.

In my teens, already drinking and drugging, I didn’t expect to see 21, and at 21, out of control, I didn’t expect to see 30. At 30, I had published three books but, as a sober friend put it, was deteriorating faster than I could lower my standards.

Then at 32, I got clean and sober, the miracle of my life from which all other blessings flow. My son was born three years later. The apple fell close to the tree: My son went off the rails, too. He and his partner had a baby at 19, which had not been in my specific plans for him, but you know the old line: If you want to make God laugh, tell Her your plans.

The baby, soon to get his learner’s permit, turned out to be the gift of a lifetime. My son got clean and sober 13 years ago, and the three of us grew up together. Then after a long search, I met this brilliant, kind writer guy and, three days after I started getting Social Security, I married him. Yesterday, I published my 20th book, called “Somehow.” Today, when I woke up, I was 70. Seventy!

my 16th birthday essay

I think that I am only 57, but the paperwork does not back this up. I don’t feel old, because your inside self doesn’t age. When younger people ask me when I graduated from high school and I say 1971, there’s a moment’s pause, as if this is inconceivable and I might as well have said 20 B.C. That’s when I feel my age. But I smile winsomely because, while I would like to have their skin, hearing, vision, memory, balance, stamina and focus, I would not go back even one year.

My older friends and I know a thing or two.

In general, though, I know how little I know. This is a big relief.

I know that my lifelong belief, that to be beyond reproach offers shelter and protection, is a lie. Shelter is an inside job, protection an illusion. We are as vulnerable as kittens. Love fends off the worst of it.

I know now that everyone is screwed up to some degree, and that everyone screws up. Phew. I thought for decades it was just me, that all of you had been issued owner’s manuals in second grade, the day I was home with measles. We are all figuring it out as we go. Aging is grad school.

I know a very little bit about God, or goodness, or good orderly direction. I am a believer, but I don’t trouble myself about ultimate reality, the triune nature of the deity or who shot the Holy Ghost. I say help a lot, and thanks, and are You kidding me??? Have You been drinking again, Friend?

I know about something I will call cloak hope, most obvious to me in the people who swooped in and helped me get sober in 1986, and swooped down again in 2012 for my child. In my case, an elderly sober woman named Ruby saw me in my utter, trembly hopelessness — afraid, smelly and arrogant; she swept in and took me under her wing. She wrapped her cloak around me and was the counternarrative to all I believed at 32, i.e., that I needed to figure things out, especially myself, and who to blame.

I know the beauty of shadows. Shadows show us how life can gleam in contrast. Sunshine might be dancing outside the window, but the wonder is in the variegation, with fat white clouds bunched up on the right casting shadows on the hills and gardens, and brushstrokes of gray clouds on the left and — most magical — the long narrow shawl of fog right across the top of the ridge. The day is saying, Who knows how the weather will morph, but meanwhile so much is possible. And that is life asserting itself.

I know life will assert itself. Knowing this means I have a shot at some measure of pliability, like a willow tree that is maybe having an iffy day.

I know everything is in flux, that all things will turn into other things. I am uncomfortable with this but less so than in younger years. Michael Pollan wrote, “Look into a flower, and what do you see? Into the very heart of nature’s double nature — that is, the contending energies of creation and dissolution, the spiring toward complex form and the tidal pull away from it.” So I don’t sweat feeling a little disoriented some days.

I have grown mostly unafraid of my own death, except late at night when I head to WebMD and learn that my symptoms are probably cancer.

I know and am constantly aware of how much we have all lost and are in danger of losing — I am not going to name names — and am awash with gratitude for lovely, funny things that are still here and still work.

I know how to let go now, mostly, although it is not a lovely Hallmark process, and when well-wishers from my spiritual community exhort me to let go and let God, I want to Taser them. But I know that when I finally tell a best friend of my thistly stuckness, the telling is the beginning of release. You have to learn to let go. Otherwise, you get dragged, or you become George Costanza’s father pounding the table and shouting, “Serenity now!”

I know that people and pets I adore will keep dying, and it will never be okay, and then it will, sort of, mostly. I know the cycle is life, death, new life, and I think this is a bad system, but it is the one currently in place.

I know I will space out and screw up right and left as I head out on this book tour, say things I wish I could take back, forget things, sometimes onstage, and lose things. I just will.

I recently went to Costa Rica, where my husband was giving a spiritual retreat, and I forgot my pants. My pants! And last month, I went to give a talk at a theater two states away and forgot to bring any makeup. I am quite pale, almost light blue in some places — think of someone from “Game of Thrones” with a head cold — and ghostly under bright lights. When I discovered this omission, I was wearing only tinted moisturizer, powder on my nose and light pink lip gloss.

I gave myself an inspiring pep talk on my inner beauty, the light within. And then I had a moment of clarity: I asked the person driving me to the venue to stop at CVS, where I bought blush and a lipstick that was accidentally brighter and glossier than I usually wear. I looked fabulous. Age is just a number when you still know how to shine. And I shone.

The day would forever remain etched in my memory. I was still pondering on how I would celebrate, dance and merry-make in my eighteenth birthday. The colorful moment was of great significance to my life. Despite having been brought up in a well-off background, I had adopted the attitude of simplicity. I always strove to be humble and admired individuals based on their personality. This very day, I expected a collection of gifts from friends and relatives. Most importantly, I yearned for a gift from mum. I persistently reminded her about the occasion as if she had forgotten. The day had finally come. My eighteenth birthday became a reality. As I walked past my private study room, I spotted a token on my desk. It was wrapped in a sumptuous cover. I wanted the contents revealed to my conscience. However small the package appeared to be, my thoughts behind the token was the source of the inner beauty associated with it. As I opened the package, I was impressed by the lustrous silvery appearance that it possessed. This prompted me to endlessly ponder at the glamour of the gift each and every time I gave it a glance. The ancient adage which suggests that all which glitters is not gold was vividly inscribed in my mind. More sentimental value was attached to the person offering a token as opposed to its economic quantification. During the special occasion of my eighteenth birthday, the token that I received from my only mum and care-taker occasion conspicuously stood out. I strolled outside my parents’ compound as I enjoyed the cool summer winds. It wasn’t just an ordinary day. It was the eighteenth birthday that I had yearned for! Although I hardly celebrated significant occasions in my lifetime, the gifts colored the event and graced that particular occasion. I had often opted for simple presents and assets in possession. This attribute applied when it came to either receiving or dishing out gifts. My eighteenth birthday was the most anticipated as I yearned for a token from my mother. Irrespective of the impression a token generated to the public, I still appreciated it. I wasn’t bothered whether a token happened to be a pair of second-hand shoes or the most popular car in the vehicle mainstream. My conviction on passion and affection was based on the individual expressing the will to offer the gift. The present that I received from mum was a Gucci model pen; silvery, heavy and thick as well. The top was inscribed in cursive dark Arabic letters. The words were interpreted as “I’ll always love you.” The words had, and still have a heavy impact on my heart. I feel confident, appreciated and happier than before ever time I take a glance at my pen. It’s so exciting to write with mum’s pen. Its liquid composition is cool while the smooth sleek surface is comfortable to work with. The token might have sounded relatively cheap, but it wasn’t inexpensive as one would have thought! It was about my position in my mum’s heart. The Arabic inscription was worth to reckon with. Despite the fact that that they happen to be traditional words, she verbally reiterated the meaning at the exact time and occasion. Consequently, I had treasured an important trait of my mother within my heart-simplicity and love for people. No one could ever grab these aspects from me.

With ‘The Birthday Party,’ Praxis Stage makes a welcome return

The cast of Praxis Stage's "The Birthday Party" (clockwise, from rear left): Sharon Mason, Paul Valley, Darya Denisova, Kevin Paquette, Zair Silva, and Daniel Boudreau.

CHELSEA — As the COVID pandemic has ebbed, small and fringe theater companies have been far slower to resume operations than midsize and large companies.

Within that worrisome context, Praxis Stage’s bracing production of Harold Pinter’s “The Birthday Party” serves as an illustration of what we’ve been missing.

Led by founder and artistic director Daniel Boudreau, Praxis Stage is tiny but ambitious. “The Birthday Party,” directed by James Wilkinson, is the company’s first show since February 2020.

Exemplifying the DIY, make-a-virtue-of-necessity ethos that drives many smaller theaters, Boudreau is in the “Birthday Party” cast. Indeed, as a mysterious and intimidating figure named Goldberg, Boudreau is the single most compelling figure in the production.

Sunday’s matinee was a bit ragged around the edges, with one performance lacking in a key role. But on balance, the production does an admirable job pulling you into Pinter’s unnerving, destabilizing world, where the laws of logic and causation do not apply, and humor periodically glints like a piece of broken glass.

As Pinter’s first full-length play, “The Birthday Party” was the theatergoing public’s introduction to that hard-to-figure-out world. It premiered in 1958 to a hostile reception from London critics. Pinter, for his part, did not like that first production.

Some of the hallmarks of the playwright’s style can be seen and heard — the “heard” part is always crucial with Pinter — in “The Birthday Party.” The emphasis on atmosphere over plot. The playwright’s refusal to spell out motives for the things his characters do. The enigmatic dialogue that obscures more than it reveals while conjuring stirrings of dread. The sense that identity itself is up for grabs.

“The Birthday Party” takes place at a British seaside boardinghouse that has seen better days. Or maybe it hasn’t. There’s a weariness to the place, which is run by nervously eager-to-please Meg (Sharon Mason, excellent) and her disengaged husband Petey (Paul Valley).

(The six-member Praxis Stage cast does not essay English accents, and they largely eschew the “Pinter pause,” which is a cliche by this point.)

The sole boarder in the establishment is Stanley, a disheveled man in a bathrobe, portrayed by Zair Silva. Stanley has been the sole boarder for a year, apparently. On Sunday afternoon, Silva’s performance was too tentative in Act One, as if he was still getting his arms around the part. In Act Two — when Stanley is in deep trouble and cowed to the point of incoherence — Silva had a firmer fix on his character.

Meg is flirtatious with Stanley, but he treats her with contempt. She gets his attention, though, when she mentions that “two gentlemen” will be paying a visit to the boardinghouse. Stanley’s alarm and suspicion are warranted. The nattily attired Goldberg (Boudreau) and his companion, McCann (Kevin Paquette, deftly channeling movie gangsters from the 1930s), have a few questions for Stanley.

It leads to a doozy of an interrogation scene, when Goldberg and McCann fire question after question at the hapless Stanley, from the specific (“Why did you leave the organization?”) to the non sequitur (“Why did the chicken cross the road?”) Questions flicker across the mind: Are they enforcers from the mob, or from a totalitarian state? A religious organization? Do they even have the right guy?

Meg keeps insisting it’s Stanley’s birthday; he keeps insisting it isn’t. A twentysomething visitor named Lulu (Darya Denisova, doing what she can in an underwritten part) had earlier shown up with a package for Meg. It contains her birthday present for Stanley: a toy drum.

Praxis Stage is presenting “The Birthday Party” in the black box space on the first floor of Chelsea Theatre Works. The seating capacity for the space is roughly 60. At Sunday’s matinee the audience was maybe a third of that.

It’s a shame, because this production deserves to be seen, and a reminder that the local theater scene cannot be considered fully recovered until companies of all sizes are back in business.

THE BIRTHDAY PARTY

Play by Harold Pinter. Directed by James Wilkinson. Presented by Praxis Stage. At Chelsea Theatre Works, Chelsea. Through April 28. Tickets $15-$40. brownpapertickets.com/event/6262364

Farewell, and Thanks, to a Man Who Kept Kids Safe

When they lost their beloved crossing guard, the students at Avenues The World School — Spider-Man, Wilder, Miss Seattle and the rest — paid tribute in cocoa and chalk.

From the corner of West 25th Street in Manhattan, it takes 34 steps to cross 10th Avenue, more if it is a kindergartner dawdling, sippy cup in hand, to the private school on the other side. To get to Avenues The World School by crossing West 25th Street takes only 16 steps, even fewer if it is a frantic 12th grader bounding to be on time for first period.

Listen to this article with reporter commentary

Five days a week, in the bright early mornings of September and the creeping twilight of February afternoons, Richard Henderson, crossing guard, oversaw those arrivals, holding hands, bumping fists, hollering at traffic, picking up dropped homework.

“My man, Wilder,” he would call out to a 4-year-old boy.

“Spider-Man,” he’d chuckle at the preschooler clutching for dear life a figurine of his favorite superhero.

“Miss Seattle,” he’d address a third-grade girl, a new student from the West Coast who loyally wore a Seahawks cap every day.

Henderson, known as Richie, was a son of East New York, raised on public assistance by a single mother who died of cancer when Richie was just a teenager. He had no high school diploma nor even a general equivalency degree, but he had a good family and a job he loved as a crossing guard at a $65,850-a-year private school.

Every school day at the corner of 10th and 25th, children of great privilege were given over, for a fleeting few seconds, to the protection of a man of great warmth and responsibility. Henderson managed the flow of Ubers dropping off children and made sure the boys let the girls play football with them during recess.

Raina Gilchrist, a Spanish language instructor at the school, said Henderson connected with the students in a way that she, for one, could not, whether he was sharing secret handshakes with them or joining in their games at recess. He was comfortably direct, totally in charge, utterly reliable.

They adored one another, she said. “And boy, could he throw a football.”

In return for his work, companionship and perfect spirals, the parents and children at Avenues gave Henderson their respect and thanks — sometimes with a sizable holiday check, sometimes with just a cup of cocoa on a bitterly cold day.

Then, in January, a decade into his career at 25th and 10th, they would be there for Henderson when he was gone and it was his family that needed protecting.

Eyes and Ears for 1,900 Kids

The corner of a beige-colored building with school crosswalks in the foreground.

School crossing guards form an unheralded army of men and women who, parish by parish, school district by school district, keep New York safe and hold it together. The city’s public schools require guards to speak English, pass a drug screening and do a week of training at the police academy. The agency that sent Avenues its contract crossing guards provides its own training.

But the talents most necessary in a crossing guard can be harder to measure: patience, imperviousness to weather, a sense of humor and, should the moment arise, a willingness to risk one’s life to save a child’s.

These foot soldiers of the city can be grandmothers in Woodside looking to fill up their days or graduate students in Fort Greene hustling to make the next tuition payment.

Or they can be steadfast guys like Richie Henderson.

The third and youngest son born to Lavina Joyce Henderson, Richie lost his father to AIDS and his mother to cancer when she was just 44. The older boys, Earl and Jermaine, tried to look out for him, and in Brooklyn’s 75th Precinct in the late 1980s, that took some doing.

The East New York neighborhood averaged 100 or so murders a year, and the local cops became infamous for their role in the precinct’s drug dealing and violence. Jermaine, the second boy, was shot five times in a hail of gunfire — once in the head, once each in his shoulder and back, once in each of his arms. It was a neighborhood beef, and there would be no arrest.

“The bullet in my head is still there,” Jermaine said.

Jermaine’s survival was no small miracle, and his mission afterward was clear, he said.

“Protect my little brother at all costs,” he said.

It turned out, Richie didn’t need all that much protection. He would become known as a gifted neighborhood mediator. He calmed disputes; he encouraged laughter; he brokered deals to just let stuff go.

“All he wanted to have was peace around him,” Jermaine said.

Henderson’s first jobs, perhaps not surprisingly, were as a watchman. They weren’t glamorous.

“He was security at construction sites,” his wife, Jakeba Dockery, said with a laugh. “Guarding dirt.”

Henderson met Dockery when they were teenagers. She went on a blind date with a friend of his and he tagged along. He wound up with her number and her lifelong affection. They had three children, two girls and a boy: Richie Jr. works as an exterminator with the city’s public housing authority; Lavina, named for Richie’s mother, is working to gain her welder’s license; and Janaya is a freshman guard on the varsity basketball team at East New York Family Academy, already drawing interest from college recruiters. Henderson became a grandfather to two little girls.

He arrived at 25th and 10th on Manhattan’s West Side as a contract worker in 2014. He was given a neon vest and charged with safekeeping many of the 1,900 children who turned up every day. It was a school with lofty aims.

“We will graduate students at ease beyond their borders,” its mission statement pledges, proclaiming that they will become “architects of lives that transcend the ordinary.”

Henderson was an architect of lives, too. The youngest children arrived calling his name; those who graduated came back to see him. Kids injured at recess were scooped up in his giant hands. He got Spider-Man a Hot Wheels set as a gift, and he cried with relief when he realized a student he thought had left the school turned out to have been studying overseas.

“I kept waiting,” he told the boy.

Elizabeth Litman, dean of students for the middle grades, told of how Henderson was especially vigilant at dismissal.

“A lot of kids would step out to 25th and 10th Avenue and not be aware of cars, and just be really excited to get pizza, to see friends and get into their after-school activities,” Litman said. “He was their eyes when they couldn’t really see or they weren’t really focused on the dangers that could be potentially around them.”

Back at the home they’d bought in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, Henderson would tell Dockery he’d seen some of the parents on television, stars of one kind or another. He was grateful for what Dockery called “decent money” — $2,200 every two weeks.

In the summer of 2023, the school honored Henderson’s contribution by making him a staff employee, something they had never done for a crossing guard before. He’d no longer work as a subcontractor. He would have a benefits package, including health care, a retirement plan and a life insurance policy.

“They gave him his roses,” Dockery said of Henderson’s status as a staff member.

She said her husband, imposing at more than 6 feet tall and more than 200 pounds, could be stern and demanding of his own children, but never with the kids at Avenues.

“Those kids, that school, they got the best of Richie,” she said with pride and not regret.

A Dispute, a Death, Despair

On Jan. 14, a Sunday, Henderson went back to the old neighborhood in East New York to watch an N.F.L. playoff game with friends. The next day would be a day off, Martin Luther King’s Birthday, so the load of laundry that needed to be done could be pushed off till then. He promised Dockery he’d be back in plenty of time to make his famous mashed potatoes for dinner.

“You got a big belly,” she used to tease him. “Nothing’s going to hurt that belly.”

Henderson and one of his friends, Anthony Williams, were headed home on the No. 3 train when there was a dispute inside the car they were riding in. Dockery said she was told a man and his wife and child were playing loud music, and another rider objected. When a fight started, Henderson intervened.

The police can’t confirm that. There were no cameras in the car, and witness testimony has been hard to corroborate. They have no reason to believe Henderson did anything but try to help, but the details of what took place may never be known.

Here is what’s certain: Richie Henderson was shot dead, gone at 45. Early news reports said Henderson was shot multiple times. Dockery said the death certificate she received said her husband was shot in the stomach, severing an artery in the big belly she thought would keep him safe.

That night, detectives took Dockery to Kings County Hospital Center. Henderson was already in the morgue.

“I didn’t get to touch my husband when he was warm, you know,” she said.

Dockery’s heartbreak has turned to considerable anger. She said the subway train sped through multiple stops after Henderson was shot, ruining any chance he might be saved. Photos of her dead husband later surfaced online, and she has taken steps to sue the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, alleging the pictures were taken and leaked by M.T.A. employees.

No one has been arrested in Henderson’s death. For Dockery, there is just a consuming absence — of comprehension and acceptance. The killer, she said, took her heart, took her life as she’d known it. And the killer took the $2,200 every two weeks that had kept their family afloat.

“We have a mortgage, we have bills,” she said. “We have children, and grandchildren. My husband was a great provider. My husband didn’t miss a day of work. I used to beg him to stay home with me. ‘No, I got to go get my babies, my students,’ he’d say. ‘They’re going to miss me. I got to be in the street with my babies.’”

Helping Hands

Beatrice Prince, a senior at Avenues, had known Henderson since she was in second grade. Henderson made sure she got to play at recess alongside the boys. She learned of his death on the news, and was shattered.

Leo, her brother and a 15-year-old sophomore at the school, wanted to soften the blow. He had never created a GoFundMe site before, but he set one up and asked Beatrice to spread the word. When he learned there were parents trying a similar effort, he joined forces with them.

“I knew I had to do something to give back,” he said. “The hope was it would blow up.”

The site quickly attracted a couple of thousand dollars. The next day during class, Leo sneaked a look, and a family had donated $10,000. Lots more had donated less. Each time he refreshed the page, he caught his breath.

The site wound up raising $378,000 from 1,704 donations.

“How crazy,” he said.

So crazy it knocked Jakeba Dockery sideways.

“Overwhelming,” she said.

Students, parents and teachers wrote cards and testimonials to Henderson. Becca Howlett, the director of people and culture at the school, delivered them to Dockery and read some aloud at Henderson’s funeral in Brooklyn. Howlett also cleared the way for Dockery to get some professional financial planning advice on how to handle the hundreds of thousands of dollars born of tragedy.

Dockery gave Howlett a necklace in thanks. The locket on it held some of the ashes of her husband.

Mya Cahana was among the students who produced a tribute to Henderson for the school’s monthly magazine.

She heard about Henderson’s unique bond with students in Gilchrist’s Spanish classes. She heard from Spider-Man’s parents, and about Henderson’s man Wilder. She herself had known Henderson for a decade.

“Richie was Richie,” she said. “He knew my name. He was someone looking out for me.”

The magazine carried a picture of the impromptu memorials to Henderson on the sidewalk outside the school — flowers, and a cup of cooling cocoa, too. Students also used chalk to write out Henderson’s name. One of those children, an eighth-grade girl named Cidney Homschek, worried about how long the sidewalk mural would last, and so wrote a poem that might last forever.

You’ll never get to notice how chalk cripples in my palm,

Fills a street with pigment,

Only to fade as rain washes by or

Footsteps stomp out their color

Now Mya will get to report that the local community board is seeking to have the stretch of 10th Avenue that Henderson patrolled named in his honor, on street signs that can’t be washed away.

Mya, the daughter of a doctor and a health care consultant, appreciates the yawning gap between Henderson’s upbringing and that of many of the school’s children.

But none of their differences, she said, were evident to her when she first encountered Henderson as a 7-year-old, an only child transplanted to New York from across the country, uncertain and a little afraid, wearing a Seahawks cap.

“Miss Seattle,” he called her.

NPR suspends senior editor Uri Berliner after essay accusing outlet of liberal bias

Npr suspended senior editor uri berliner a week after he authored an online essay accusing the outlet of allowing liberal bias in its coverage..

my 16th birthday essay

NPR has suspended a senior editor who authored an essay published last week on an online news site in which he argued that the network had "lost America's trust" because of a liberal bias in its coverage, the outlet reported.

Uri Berliner was suspended Friday for five days without pay, NPR reported Tuesday . The revelation came exactly a week after Berliner publicly claimed in an essay for The Free Press, an online news publication, that NPR had allowed a "liberal bent" to influence its coverage, causing the outlet to steadily lose credibility with audiences.

The essay reignited the criticism that many prominent conservatives have long leveled against NPR and prompted newsroom leadership to implement monthly internal reviews of the network's coverage, NPR reported. Berliner's essay also angered many of his colleagues and exposed NPR's new chief executive Katherine Maher to a string of attacks from conservatives over her past social media posts.

In a statement Monday to NPR, Maher refuted Berliner's claims by underscoring NPR's commitment to objective coverage of national issues.

"In America everyone is entitled to free speech as a private citizen," Maher said. "What matters is NPR's work and my commitment as its CEO: public service, editorial independence, and the mission to serve all of the American public. NPR is independent, beholden to no party, and without commercial interests."

Berliner rails against NPR's coverage of COVID-19, diversity efforts

Berliner, a senior business editor who has worked at NPR for 25 years, argued in the Free Press essay that “people at every level of NPR have comfortably coalesced around the progressive worldview.”

While he claimed that NPR has always had a "liberal bent" ever since he was hired at the outlet, he wrote that it has since lost its "open-minded spirit," and, hence, "an audience that reflects America."

The Peabody Award-winning journalist highlighted what he viewed as examples of the network's partisan coverage of several major news events, including the origins of COVID-19 and the war in Gaza . Berliner also lambasted NPR's diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies – as reflected both within its newsroom and in its coverage – as making race and identity "paramount in nearly every aspect of the workplace.”

"All this reflected a broader movement in the culture of people clustering together based on ideology or a characteristic of birth," he wrote.

Uri Berliner's essay fuels conservative attacks on NPR

In response to the essay, many prominent conservatives and Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, launched renewed attacks at NPR for what they perceive as partisan coverage.

Conservative activist Christopher Rufo in particular targeted Maher for messages she posted to social media years before joining the network – her  first at a news organization . Among the posts singled out were  a 2020 tweet that called Trump racist .

Trump reiterated on his social media platform, Truth Social, his longstanding argument that NPR’s government funding should be rescinded.

NPR issues formal rebuke to Berliner

Berliner provided an NPR reporter with a copy of the formal rebuke for review in which the organization told the editor he had not been approved to write for other news outlets, as is required of NPR journalists.

NPR also said he publicly released confidential proprietary information about audience demographics, the outlet reported.

Leadership said the letter was a "final warning" for Berliner, who would be fired for future violations of NPR's policies, according to NPR's reporting. Berliner, who is a dues-paying member of NPR's newsroom union, told the NPR reporter that he is not appealing the punishment.

A spokeswoman for NPR said the outlet declined to comment on Berliner's essay or the news of his suspension when reached Tuesday by USA TODAY.

"NPR does not comment on individual personnel matters, including discipline," according to the statement. "We expect all of our employees to comply with NPR policies and procedures, which for our editorial staff includes the NPR Ethics Handbook ."

NPR staffer express dismay; leadership puts coverage reviews in place

According to the NPR article, Berliner's essay also invoked the ire of many of his colleagues and the reporters whose stories he would be responsible for editing.

"Newsrooms run on trust," NPR political correspondent Danielle Kurtzleben said in a post last week on social media site X, though he didn't mention Berliner by name. "If you violate everyone's trust by going to another outlet and [expletive] on your colleagues (while doing a bad job journalistically, for that matter), I don't know how you do your job now."

Amid the fallout, NPR reported that NPR's chief news executive Edith Chapin announced to the newsroom late Monday afternoon that Executive Editor Eva Rodriguez would lead monthly meetings to review coverage.

Berliner expressed no regrets about publishing the essay in an interview with NPR, adding that he tried repeatedly to make his concerns over NPR's coverage known to news leaders.

"I love NPR and feel it's a national trust," Berliner says. "We have great journalists here. If they shed their opinions and did the great journalism they're capable of, this would be a much more interesting and fulfilling organization for our listeners."
