The revival tour drained her.

"Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me" begins back in 2016, with a frustrated Gomez prepping the stage show for her tour in support of her second studio album.

"It just sucks, all of it," Gomez cried after one rehearsal. "It looks so bad. I have no idea what the f--- I'm doing." She went on to acknowledge that she had a voice in her heard telling her, "'You missed this, that sucked, that sucked,' and it sucks the life out of me and I don't want to perform. The pressure is just overwhelming because I want to do the best I can."

Selena is then seen apologizing to John Janick, the Chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M Records, telling him, "I don't want you to regret signing me." Concerned that the show felt "too young," the former Disney Channel star said, "I want nothing more than to not be my past and it comes back."

After 55 performances, including one that saw her admit, "sometimes I wake up and I feel like I don't have it in me," the Revival tour was canceled.

"Tours are a really lonely place for me," Gomez told Vogue in 2017. "My self-esteem was shot. I was depressed, anxious. I started to have panic attacks right before getting onstage, or right after leaving the stage. Basically I felt I wasn't good enough, wasn't capable. I felt I wasn't giving my fans anything, and they could see it—which, I think, was a complete distortion."

Her Friends Feared For Her Life

Following the cancellation of the world tour, Gomez entered a Tennessee psychiatric facility for treatment for anxiety, panic attacks and depression stemming from her 2014 lupus diagnosis. One of the more alarming symptoms, her assistant reveals in the documentary, was suicidal ideations.

"At one point she's like, 'I don't want to be alive right now, I don't want to live,'" Gomez's former assistant Theresa Marie Mingus recalled. "And I'm like, 'Wait, what?' It's one of those moments where you look in her eyes and there's nothing there. It was just pitch-black and it's so scary."

Added Gomez's close friend Raquelle Stevens, "I just remember it being chaotic and she was hearing all of these voices. [They] just kept getting louder and louder [and] that triggered some kind of psychotic break. If anyone saw what I saw and the state she was in at the mental hospital, they wouldn't have recognized her at all."

Her Bipolar Disorder

The "Only Murders in the Building" actress opened up about being diagnosed with bipolar disorder while she was in treatment.

"I'll be honest, I didn't want to go to a mental hospital," she admitted, "but I didn't want to be trapped in myself, in my mind anymore. I thought my life was over. I thought this is how I'm going to be forever."

Reflecting on her diagnosis in footage from 2019, Gomez said, "I'm in a better place, but I don't know. I guess sometimes I can't explain it for sure. I needed to keep learning about it, I needed to take it day by day."

She publicly revealed her bipolar diagnosis in 2020 during an appearance on  Miley Cyrus'  "Bright Minded" Instagram Live series.

Her Mom Didn’t Know She Sought Treatment

Gomez's mother Mandy Teefey reveals that she learned her daughter had suffered a mental breakdown in 2016 through TMZ .

"They called me and wanted to know what my daughter was doing in the hospital," an emotional Teefey explained. "She didn't want anything to do with me and I was scared she was going to die."

Their relationship strained at the moment, she continued, "You hang on as tight as you can and try to help them with their treatment and that's the hardest thing to do, to just go to bed and hope that they wake up the next day. It's a miracle she got out but there's always that fear that it's going to happen again."

Lashing Out at Family and Friends

Prior to receiving her bipolar diagnosis, Gomez recalled being "so mean" to the people close to her, especially her mother and stepdad, Brian Teefey.

"I shouldn't have spoke to them the way that I did and I shouldn't have treated them the way that I did," she explained. "Sometimes I know I wasn't me. When I wake up the next day and they tell me what happened, but they explained to me, like, 'Look, we know that that's not you talking and we're really concerned. Just know that we love you. We don't see anything different from what was last night to now.'"

Still, Gomez said she can "remember certain things that I did...and even to this day, I keep saying thank you and I'm sorry."

Her Ongoing Battle With Lupus

After initially being diagnosed with the autoimmune disease in 2014, Gomez struggled with a lupus flare in 2020 just as the coronavirus pandemic was beginning.

"I haven't felt it since I was younger," a crying Gomez told a friend of the joint pain she is feeling. "In the morning when I wake up, I immediately starty crying because it just hurts, like, everything."

Gomez shares that she has been having "bad dreams" about her past and mistakes she feels she's made. "It's what drives me into depression," she explained. "I just wanted to quit sometimes so I could just be happy and be normal like everybody else."

After undergoing tests, Gomez's doctor informed her that she has "lupus myositis rheumatoid overlap," which causes inflammation in the joints and muscles. She then begins undergoing extensive infusion treatments that, Gomez explained, are "really hard on your system."

How She Put Justin Bieber Behind Her

After delivering an emotional speech about her struggles with anxiety and depression while accepting the 2019 McLean Award at the hospital's Annual Dinner, Gomez reveals that "being honest that night helped." And it ultimately led her to write "Lose You to Love Me," which she completed in just 45 minutes alongside songwriters Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter.

"It's about more than just a lost love," Gomez explains of the hit song. "It's me learning to choose myself, to choose life. But also hoping that people can find grace and peace in that too. The song is about knowing that you completely lost every part of who you are, just to rediscover yourself again."

After years of being asked about her relationship with Bieber because "everything was so public," Gomez, who never acknowledges the "Sorry" singer by name, admits, "I felt haunted by a past relationship that no one wanted to let go of. But then I just moved past it. I wasn't afraid anymore."

And she was finally ready to move on.

"I feel like I had to go through the worst possible heartbreak ever and then just forgetting everything at the drop of a hand, it was really confusing," Gomez says. "But I just think that needed to happen and ultimately, it was the best thing that ever happened to me."

Her Heart Is In Africa

"After I got out of the last treatment center, I knew what made me happy," Gomez explains, "and it was connection."

But, per her doctor's orders, Gomez's planned philanthropic visit to Kenya to see the schools she helped raise money to build was delayed several years due to her 2017 kidney transplant. Once she's finally apple to make the trip in 2019, she vowed to visit quarterly

"The truth is I've never felt good enough," Gomez admitted. "Even when I'm on stage in front of a crowd, I'll always find the one person who doesn't like me and I believe them, I want to believe in myself. The people I've met here in Kenya are so giving, I just want to feel like I deserve to be here with them."

During her time in Maasai Mara, Gomez bonds with the students, talking about love, ambition and, in a particularly emotional conversation with one woman, suicidal ideation.

After her time in Kenya, Gomez travels directly to London and Paris to promote her music, but she struggles to adjust to her life as a celebrity. "It just seems like such a waste of time," she said. "What am I doing right now?"

Later acknowledging that "part of my heart is still in Kenya," Gomez admitted, "I felt guilty being there sometimes. I hate that, I feel like I went and filmed and I experienced, but it's just so hard because I feel so selfish. Do I feel great? Yes, and do I feel like I left an impact? Yes, but do I feel like I've done enough? No."

"Talking to someone about mental health in Kenya, that's beautiful," she continued. "I don't know if I felt like, 'Oh, I did it and I'm such a great person.' No, it's just the beginning for me."

Her True Passion Revealed

During her trip to Kenya, Gomez shares her ambition to find a way to pass a bill that would add a mental health curriculum into U.S. schools.

"My ultimate dream is that I am able to save people's lives through something, whether it's a song, music or it's just me speaking about the troubles, trials and tribulations I have been through," she later shared. "I could be a voice for others who maybe don't know what's going on or what they are feeling."

In 2020, Gomez created the Rare Impact Fund to raise $100 million to provide free mental health resources for young people. And in May 2022, Selena met with President  Joe Biden  to discuss the creation of a mental health syllabus in the nation's education system after hosting the first ever Youth Action Forum on Mental Health in coordination with the White House.

"When you're struggling with your mental health, the essential part is knowing what to do and recognizing that," Gomez explained. "It's something that I'm not ashamed of."

Her Disney Channel Crushes Revealed

In one of the documentary's lighter moments, Gomez visits her childhood home in Grand Prairie, Texas, and checks to see if the evidence of her teenage crush is still on her bedroom wall.

"I had a crush on Cole and Dylan Sprouse, so I'd come in my closet and I would write things down," Gomez admitted of her costars from "The Suite Life of Zack and Cody." Though she and Dylan Sprouse shared their first-ever onscreen kiss in 2006, it's Cole Sprouse's name she finds encircled with a heart. Joked Selena, "I'm sorry, Cole, if you ever see this!"

Her solo debut album released in August 2013. It featured two early hits for Gomez: “Come & Get It” and “Slow Down.” Both songs are now multiplatinum.

Revival   went platinum six months after its October 2015 release. It also introduced a new, more adult side of Gomez, who had long been in the shadows of her Disney stardom. Songs included the platinum single “Kill Em With Kindness” and multiplatinum hits “Hands To Myself” and “Same Old Love.”

Gomez’s third studio album came in January 2020. Not reaching the same level of success as her sophomore album,  Rare nonetheless included the singer’s first Billboard No. 1 song “Lose You To Love Me.”

Revelación (EP)

Her Spanish-language EP, released in March 2021, didn’t rise to the commercial success of her albums, but it captured critical acclaim, earning Gomez her first Grammy nomination for Best Latin Pop Album.

Gomez has shared she is working on a new album, sharing photos from inside a recording studio in June 2023. She has not announced its name or any details about when it could be released.

Gomez has regularly graced the Billboard Hot 100. Her first Top 10 hit, “Come & Get It,” came in April 2013. “The Heart Wants What It Wants,” “Good For You” featuring A$AP Rocky , “Same Old Love,” and “Hands To Myself” followed. Then, in November 2019, “Lose You To Love Me” soared to No. 1 ahead of its inclusion on her third album, Rare .

Other popular songs include 2017’s “Bad Liar,” “Fetish” featuring Gucci Mane, and “It Ain’t Me,” a collaboration with Norwegian DJ Kygo. She also teamed up with the mysterious Marshmello for ”Wolves.” In May 2018, Gomez released the track “Back to You” for Netflix’s teen suicide drama 13 Reasons Why .

More recently, Gomez has found success on collaboration singles, such as “Baila Conmigo” with Rauw Alejandro, “Let Somebody Go” with Coldplay, and “Calm Down” with Rema. Her latest single “My Mind & Me” released shortly after her documentary in November 2022.

Billboard’s Woman of the Year

In November 2017, months after undergoing kidney transplant surgery, Gomez was named woman of the year at the annual Billboard Women in Music event. “I would like to thank my amazing team and my family because they stuck with me through some really hard times,” she told the crowd. “And I got to do a lot this year, even though I had a couple of other things to do.”

In early January 2014, it was reported that Gomez had been battling lupus—an autoimmune disease that can cause facial swelling, fatigue, headaches, and joint pain—for more than two years. In September 2017, the multitalented artist revealed that advancing symptoms of lupus had forced her to undergo a kidney transplant earlier in the year, with her roommate and friend Francia Raísa serving as the donor.

One month later, Gomez provided details of the experience with The Today show’s Savannah Guthrie in an NBC news interview: “She lived with me in this interesting time where my kidneys were just done,” Gomez recalled. “The thought of asking somebody to [donate] was really difficult for me. And she volunteered and did it… The fact that she was a match, I mean, that’s unbelievable.”

Thanks to Raísa, Gomez was able to quickly move to the operating room for the life-saving procedure. While there were additional complications during the operation, Gomez has recovered nicely, noting that there was a 3 to 5 percent chance of her lupus resurfacing.

In November 2017, Gomez was honored at the Lupus Research Alliance Annual Gala in New York City for helping to raise more than $500,000 toward research for the disease. During her speech, she recalled the moment doctors stressed to her the urgency of undergoing a transplant procedure. “It actually got to a point where it was life-or-death,” she said. “Thankfully, one of my best friends gave me her kidney, and it was the ultimate gift of life. And I am doing quite well now.”

The chart-topping artist, who previously spoke about her battles with anxiety and depression, revealed in an April 2020 interview with Miley Cyrus that she had been diagnosed as bipolar. “When I got to know more information, it actually helps me,” Gomez told her fellow former Disney star. “It doesn’t scare me once I know it.”

Gomez opened up even more about her mental health in the 2022 Apple TV+ documentary Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me , revealing that she was initially skeptical. “I’m gonna be honest, I didn’t wanna go to the mental health hospital,” she says in the documentary. “I didn’t want to, but I didn’t want to be trapped in myself and my mind anymore. I thought my life was over. I thought, ‘This is what my life’s going to be like forever.’”

Outside of acting and music, Gomez has delved into business. In 2017, she teamed with Coach to launch the Selena Grace line of handbags and accessories, and the following year, the two sides collaborated again for a ready-to-wear collection.

September 2020 saw the launch of Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez, her massively popular makeup line, and the Rare Impact Fund, its philanthropic partner dedicated to mental health. Bloomberg reported in July 2023 that the company sold $70 million worth of a liquid blush year to date and the company expected to triple its overall says year over year.

Additionally, Gomez has served as a spokesperson for Borden Milk, appearing in the organization’s advertising campaign and print ads. She also worked on a campaign that encouraged teenagers to learn more about the 2008 presidential candidates. A supporter of UNICEF, 17-year-old Gomez became one of the organization’s ambassadors in 2009 and works to help children around the world through her C.A.N. (Charity, Action, Now) initiative.

Gomez has dated fellow musicians Nick Jonas , Zedd, and The Weeknd , as well as been romantically linked to other stars. But her most well-known relationship has been with pop star Justin Bieber .

She and Bieber first met in 2009 and eventually entered into an on- and off-again relationship. Even after their final breakup in early 2018, the romance still provides fodder for the celebrity gossip mill. In 2023, the internet was aroar over a social media drama between Gomez and Hailey Bieber, whom Justin married in September 2018.

Gomez has publicly feuded with her mother, Mandy Teefy. The two unfollowed each other on Instagram in December 2017, with some speculating it was because the singer had rekindled her romance with Bieber, though another source said the situation was more complicated than that. Teefy later told Gossip Cop that she wasn’t happy with her daughter dating Bieber, but said there was little she could do about it. “Selena can live her life however she wants as long as she is happy, safe and healthy,” she said.

Selena Gomez's lupus and other health issues: Singer opens up in new TODAY interview

Selena Gomez lives with lupus, one of several health conditions she's experienced over the years.

The 31-year-old pop star recently opened up about her wellbeing to TODAY's Hoda Kotb alongside U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy in an interview aired May 2, 2024. The conversation was a part of her  makeup line Rare Beauty’s  Mental Health Summit on May 1.

"I will always be working on my mental health, and I will always evolve. I’m not better or worse than anyone. I’m simply just a person living and surviving every day," Gomez said.

"Having to take steps to make yourself healthy takes a lot of work," she added.

The Disney Channel alum has been candid about what it's taken to keep herself mentally and physically healthy over the years. Here's what to know about Gomez's health.

Gomez was diagnosed with lupus in 2013

Gomez first went public with her health issues when she revealed that she'd been diagnosed with lupus two years prior in a 2015 interview with Billboard . The announcement came after she abruptly ended her 2013 tour to check herself into a rehab center to undergo treatment.

“I was diagnosed with lupus, and I’ve been through chemotherapy. That’s what my break was really about. I could’ve had a stroke," she said.

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that can attack joints, skin, organs and other parts of the body, according to the Lupus Foundation of America. There are four different types of the condition. Gomez has not specified which one she has. Chemotherapy can be used to treat severe forms of the disease.

Symptoms of lupus include muscle and join paint, fever, rashes, chest pain, hair loss, kidney problems, fatigue and more.

When Gomez was receiving treatment, speculation mounted about why she had to cancel her tour. “I wanted so badly to say, ‘You guys have no idea. I’m in chemotherapy,’” she told Billboard. “I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again.”

For many lupus patients, the condition can affect their mental health, and Gomez is no exception.

“I’ve discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges,” Gomez, then 24, told People in 2016 .

In an exclusive TODAY interview in 2017, Gomez revealed that she'd often continue to work, despite her lupus symptoms.

“I would get fevers, headaches. I would get fatigue. But I always just kept going,” she told TODAY’s Savannah Guthrie. “I kind of ignored it, to be honest. ... I don’t think I made the right decisions because I didn’t accept it. And that’s extremely selfish, and at the same time, really just unnecessary. I’m not really proud of that."

She had a kidney transplant to treat her lupus in 2017

Gomez was in need of a kidney transplant as a result of her lupus and had one in 2017, she announced on her Instagram at the time .

"So I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health," the then-25-year-old wrote.

The post included a picture of her friend and kidney donor, actor Francia Raisa.

"There aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis," Gomez said.

Even though she'd endured so much at such a young age, she said in the 2017 TODAY interview that “I don’t want people to think it’s a sad thing that I went through this with Francia or with anything in my life. I think all of the stuff that I went through made me and defined everything that I am right now. It’s a really beautiful thing and I have to remind myself of that. It’s not a negative experience.”

The transplant helped move her lupus into remission for some time, but Gomez said in her 2022 AppleTV+ documentary "Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me" that she had a flare up in 2020.

“I was so young. I haven’t felt it since I was younger,” she said while crying. “Now it just hurts in the morning. When I wake up, I immediately start crying because it hurts — like everything.”

Gomez said her physical pain was harming her mental health.

“I’ve been having really bad dreams about my past and stuff,” she said in the documentary. “I think my past and my mistakes — that’s what drives me into depression.”

She's entered mental health treatment facilities

Gomez took a break from her 2016 Revival World Tour to enter a mental health treatment facility after suffering from anxiety, panic attacks and depression , which she told People magazine were caused by her lupus in a statement at the time.

“I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off,” she said in the statement.

A year later, she reflected on this decision in an interview with TODAY's Savannah Guthrie. “I went away to a facility. I took some time off. I needed to get my mind right, be healthy,” Gomez said. “I removed myself from everyone in my life.”

This period of her life was also captured in her AppleTV+ documentary. “It sucks the life out of me and I don’t want to perform. The pressure is just overwhelming because I want to do the best I can,” Gomez said in the film.

Her former assistant Theresa Marie Mingus also detailed how Gomez was doing at the time in the documentary: “At one point, she’s like, ‘I don’t want to be alive right now. I don’t want to live. And I’m like, ‘Wait, what?’”

Gomez returned to the limelight in November 2016 to accept the American Music Award for favorite pop/rock female artist.

“I had to stop,” she told the crowd of her hiatus. “I had everything, and I was absolutely broken inside. I kept it all together enough to where I would never let you down, but I kept it too much together to where I let myself down.”

Two years later, Gomez later entered a treatment facility in 2018 to help manage her anxiety and depression. Her mom, Mandy Teefey, described it as a “mental breakdown” in the documentary.

“You hang on as tight as you can and try to help them with their treatment, and that’s the hardest thing to do, to then just go to bed and hope that they wake up the next day,” Teefey said.

In a November 2022 interview with Rolling Stone , Gomez said she's been to four mental health treatment facilities in total.

She revealed her bipolar diagnosis in 2020

Gomez shared with the world in April 2020 that she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She chatted about the experience with Miley Cyrus on the "Hannah Montana" alum's Instagram show, "Bright Minded."

“I discussed that after years of going through a lot of different things, I realized that I was bipolar, and so when I got to know more information, it actually helps me,” she said. “It doesn’t scare me once I know it. I think people get scared of that, right?”

"I wanted to know everything about it, and it took the fear away,” she added.

Before publicly sharing her diagnosis, Gomez opened up about her mental health struggles in a January 2 020 interview with the Wall Street Journal Magazine. She revealed that medication has helped her.

“My highs were really high, and my lows would take me out for weeks at a time. I found out I do suffer from mental health issues. And, honestly, that was such a relief. I realized that there was a way to get help and to find people that you trust,” she said.

“I got on the right medication, and my life has been completely changed,” she added.

Speaking with Hoda on TODAY, she acknowledged that many people on her team didn't want her to reveal her diagnosis.

"I’ve been pulled in many different directions to not or to be able to say it. But once I did, there was no taking it back. I was very proud," Gomez said. "It allowed me to learn more about myself."

"I wasn’t understanding my mind. I wasn’t understanding my reactions and my emotions. And I think that was probably the most painful time in my life," she added.

She's had lifelong body image struggles

Gomez has been publicly body-shamed over the years and has spoken about it often.

“My weight would constantly fluctuate because I would be on certain medications. And obviously, people just ran with it,” she said in an episode of the Apple TV+ docuseries “Dear…”

“It was like they couldn’t wait to find a thing to bring me down. I was being shamed for gaining weight because of my lupus.”

“I would go online and I would post a picture of myself and I would say, ‘It doesn’t matter. I’m not accepting what you’re saying,’” she said. “All the while, being in the room posting and crying my eyes out because nobody deserves to hear those things.”

Gomez has 428 million followers on Instagram, and to manage it, she's had to set boundaries, she told Hoda Kotb in the May 2 interview.

"I disabled all my comments on my photos on Instagram for only my friends," she said. "So I think I’ve created boundaries to help me."

"People fussed about it. They fuss about everything. I felt empowered by doing that, by saying, 'This is just for me.'"

In an Instagram post earlier this year , Gomez reflected once more on her body image. She shared a throwback picture of herself in a string bikini followed by a more recent photo in a two piece swimsuit.

“Today I realized I will never look like this again...” she wrote. "I’m not perfect but I’m proud to be who I am. Sometimes I forget it’s ok to be me.”

Watch Selena Gomez Struggle to Follow Wolfgang Puck’s Direction in ‘Selena + Restaurant’ Clip

By Tomás Mier

Selena Gomez has experience with her Rare music and Rare Beauty line, but what about steaks cooked rare?

Rolling Stone can exclusively share a clip of the premiere episode of Gomez’s Food Network show, out May 2, which sees the singer learning how to cook a steak alongside esteemed chef Wolfgang Puck at his CUT Steakhouse restaurant in Beverly Hills.

“I want one medium and one rare,” Puck instructs a confused Gomez before walking away in the video. “Now, it’s all up to you. Bye!”

The scene captures Gomez placing the different cuts of meat on the grill after forgetting what doneness she was asked to cook each piece. “Babe, I thought he said ‘Rare. Medium,'” Gomez tells her bestie Raquelle Stevens, pointing at the different cuts. “Why did I do this?”

Gomez and Stevens then call Puck over for “clarification” on his simple instructions. “Should I write it down for you?” Puck asks jokingly. “We only have two steaks!”

The Return of Selena

In Gomez’s ELLE 2021 cover story, the star opens up about mental health, her Hulu series, and Instagram.

Gomez and Blanco were long distance this month as Gomez filmed Only Murders in the Building season four in New York.

A source spoke to People on April 10 about how the couple was managing being apart. “They are so in love,” the insider started. “It’s a very serious relationship, and they’re making long distance work while she’s in New York for work commitments.”

Blanco stands out to Gomez compared to previous partners, the source added: “Benny makes her feel special and they try to see each other as much as possible. She really does feel like it’s the best she’s ever been treated by a guy, and she’s had a certain glow since they started dating.”

Gomez spoke about Blanco in February during an interview with Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe . “Without getting into too much detail, I think it’s just really important to meet someone that respects you,” she said. “And I think it’s really nice to also lean on someone who understands the world that I live in. But I’d have to say overall it’s the safest that I feel, and it’s been really lovely, and I’ve only grown through it, so it’s awesome.”
