Music School (2023) Movie: What's Behind
Shriya Saran's Music School directed by Biyyala Papa Rao is attracting the attention of all. The film's trailer and teaser got a good response and the makers are releasing the film on 12 May 2023. The film's OTT rights are yet to be finalized and the streaming will be done after the completion of the theatrical run. Let us find out how Music School entertained movie lovers.
Music School (2023) Telugu Movie: Story Review
Music School all highlights the pressures in the Indian educational system and how parents, teachers, and society pressurize children with regard to studies robbing them of their dreams to pursue their hobbies be it music or sports, and how two music and drama teachers struggle to bring a change.
Mary D Cruz (Shriya Saran) joins as a music teacher in an institute where students show no interest in arts. Whether Mary will be successful in getting more students admitted to this course and whether she will increase the interest levels among children and what difficulties she faces from the students and parents and how she overcomes them, from an integral part of her daily routine.
How, Manoj Kumar (Sharman Joshi), Vikram (Prakash Raj), Albert (Shaan), Samyuktha (Gracy Goswami), and Rinchen (Ozu Barua) are connected to the developments from the rest of the story?
Music School Movie: Artists Review
Shriya Sharan tried her best to carry the film on her shoulders. But it became a daunting task as her character is not properly eked out. Sharman Joshi is ok in his role and Shaan in his debut worked hard.
Prakash Raj and Srikanth Iyengar played roles tailor-made for them but it did not offer much for them to elevate the scenes. Ozu Barua, Gracy Goswami, and others performed according to their roles.
Music School Movie: Technicians Review
Music School story penned by Biyyala Paparao tried to highlight the pressures faced by the students from all directions, parents, teachers, and society. With his story, he tried to send a message to everyone that children should be allowed to pursue their own interests. Though the idea is good and the film is made with good intent, the story turned out to be routine. Instead of highlighting the main problem, Biyyala Papa Rao deviated many times to elevate the romantic scenes much to the displeasure of all.
Many such films came earlier and those films also drew inspiration from the Hollywood classic Sound of Music. One such film is Rao Gari Illu. Viewers felt that the makers tried to reprise and recreate the same magic but with routine screenplay and direction, their plans failed completely.
Every ten to fifteen minutes songs come out from nowhere, viewers look impatiently towards the exit doors. Shriya instead of teaching music in the school will always be seen singing and dancing with the children everywhere except the corridors of the school. This itself robbed the essence of the movie.
Manan Sagar's editing left a lot to be desired. He seems to be extremely considerate and genial and must have gotten carried away with the theme that he forgot to use the editing scissors. This dragged the film right from the start and ended up giving immense torture to the movie lovers.
Kiran Deohans' cinematography is ok. He captured the visuals in an attractive and impressive manner adding value to the film. Ilayaraja and Yuvan Shankar Raja scored music. There are around 11 songs in the film and though most of the songs are situational, all looked artificial and ended up testing the patience of the viewers.
The makers even used the ever-green classic songs like Do Re Me, I Am Sixteen, and others but they lacked the emotional connection. The makers seemed to have tried to cash on to the craze of Hollywood classic Sound of Music and the hit songs in them. But the attempt boomeranged on them as Indian and Hollywood sensitivities differed completely and even the situations also.
Ilaiyaraaja's background score is just ok. Dialogues are average and routine. Production values of Yamini Movies are good.

Music School Movie: Rating Analysis
Altogether, Music School couldn't make anyone fool. Shriya Sharan's presence and singer Shaan's debut with a music-based film Music School directed by Biyyala Papa Rao appealed to all. But there ended the interest levels as Biyyala Papa Rao thought that just including numerous songs by roping in maestro Ilayaraja will be enough to mesmerize movie lovers and score a hit.
In the process, he ignored the story which turned out to be routine, and from then on screenplay turned silly and the direction went for a toss. Considering all these points, Cinejosh goes with a 1.5 Rating for Music School .

Music School Movie Review: The musical is all heart but totally out of sync
Rating: ( 2 / 5).
If only good intentions make good films… At its heart, Music School is filled with goodness and honest pursuits, but unfortunately, it does not translate into the desired outcome on screen due to the lack of resolute execution.
Director: Papa Rao Biyyala
Cast: Shriya Saran, Sharman Joshi, Prakash Raj, Leela Samson, Suhasini Mulay
Remember Virus from 3 Idiots preaching to his college students how life is a race, and one has to run, run, and run...? Similarly, Music School begins with a caricaturish school principal lecturing primary school kids about how to become the next APJ Abdul Kalams and Aryabhattas. And then he randomly begins singing... The only way to reach the top is to pass all the tests and dances with the children and teachers. As expected, this silly stunt continues even with Shriya Saran's Maria D Cruze, music teacher, singing, I am from Goa , in her introductory class and parents lousily singing ‘ My son will go to IIT to MIT ’ outside the exam coaching centre. Such random breaks into songs and dances is par for the course in musicals, but should they all be this absurd and preposterous? There is an overdose of caricature that seems to set the tonality of the film.
As it is a musical film, there are seven original songs composed by the legendary Ilaiyaraaja. But all the songs, constructed with vacuously conversational lyrics and tuned like a nursery rhyme, offer extremely discordant and abominable experiences.
So, Maria joins a school in Hyderabad as a music teacher, where Manoj Kumar (played by a superb Sharman Joshi) works as a drama teacher and is the head of the art department. Soon after Maria realises that she has no scope to engage the children in music as they are pressured to focus on Science and Maths. With the help of Manoj, she sets up her own music school in their apartment. The story unfolds with Manoj and Maria trying to put up The Sound of Music theatre play and how they enable the kids to enjoy a vacation combined with theatre practice amidst the pressure to win the rat race to become doctors and engineers.
Music School attempts to create a discourse on the teenage crisis, parental pressure on children to only take up STEM courses, and why they need to understand the children's feelings and embrace their interest in arts. And to give credits where it is due, instead of generalising that all parents are the same, the film throws a spotlight on both kinds of parents--the ones who are strict and the ones who try to help their children in pursuing their dreams. However, the incoherency in the screenplay distracts from concentrating on the crux and diverts the screen time to irrelevant narratives like exploring Maria's encounter with her ex-boyfriend and more. Likewise, the idea of drawing a similarity between Maria and Manoj's relationship with the characters — Captain Von Trapp and Governess Maria—they reprise in The Sound of Music play, is interesting, but this establishment was rather sloppy and rushed.
Although the original soundtracks of Music School don't justify the genre and the film's theme, the decent adaptation of -- Do Re Mi, So Long Farewell, and Sixteen Going on Seventeen songs-- from The Sound of Music , is a mild relief. And the vibrant frames of Goa, its touristy forts, beaches, and antique Portuguese mansions, are one of the very few things that strive hard to anchor this underwhelming film. There are some unrealistic unfolding of events in the latter half, and it feels half-baked due to the lack of a solid conflict-resolution mechanism.
Even Shriya shining in most parts as a charming and chirpy musician loved by the kids and a consummate performer like Sharman Joshi fail to salvage the film. Apart from that, the film boasts some promising performers like Leela Samson and Prakash Raj, who are supremely underutilised.
Over the years, we have seen many films like Taare Zameen Par, Udaan and Pasanga 2 that showcased varied concerns of children, and their relationship with parents and society. These films etched a mark in our hearts by constructively telling engaging tales without diluting the essence of the themes. And Music School could have been a good addition to the list for talking about the importance of arts if only there were a harmonious synchronisation of well-intended ideas, screenplay and execution...if only.

Music School review: The film takes you back to your childhood and reminds you of the importance of pursuing your passions regardless of societal expectations.
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, a proverb that we all have grown up listening to, has also somewhere impacted us so much so that movies and shows based on this core element hit home. Papa Rao Biyyala’s Music School is built on the same premise and will make you travel back to your childhood days with a musical note.
Music School talks about the pressure put by schools and parents on kids to focus on academics and not on extracurricular activities like art, music or sports. However, the film doesn’t hold you long enough, as the elongated musical numbers which arrive abruptly, despite being situational make it a tedious watch.
The first half of the film is well-paced and balanced in quickly establishing the plot of the story. It opens with a school principal lecturing the students about focusing on their studies and not on the arts. That’s when you bump into Manoj (Sharman Joshi) who is a drama teacher in the school. Through a detailed musical number, the story then goes forward in explaining how there are hardly any kids who take up extracurricular activities. That’s when Maria (Shriya Sharan) walks in, takes the help of Manoj and sets up the Music School. Things look interesting and nostalgic too, when the kids walk in wanting to have a hobby, while their parents fret, looking for ways to avoid their distraction. This dilemma makes the movie both intriguing and nostalgic.
However, the second half of the story, makes you dread. While it promises predictability, it comes with a bunch of twists and turns, which may seem unnecessary. Despite the film having a social message and creating awareness among its viewers, the film lacks the motivational or impactful value of its talking point. The 2 hour 5 minute run time could have been shortened.
Speaking of Sharman and Shriya’s on-screen presence, they have a comforting chemistry. They light up every frame. They balance each other well and still perform brilliantly individually too. You’d wanna root for them till the end of the film. Shaan’s performance stands out too. He adds the much-needed breeze to the film, with his aura along with his voice. Special mention to the veteran stars Prakash Raj and Leela Samson who bring in the right sense of credibility with their parts.
The kids do a spectacular job. This bunch is no less than the groups you’ve seen in Stanley Ka Dabba and Chillar Party. They come from all age groups and similar backgrounds, thus making you relate and resonate with their thought processes. Their angst of wanting to do something creative, yet bound by their parent’s expectations, may resonate with many young people.
As a first-time feature film director, Papa Rao Biyyala picked out a very relevant subject to make a film on. Another notable exception is the plot being based out of Hyderabad. The story looked very relevant to its roots. Better writing and screenplay, barring the musical notes, would have made wonders for the film.
Music School is a surprisingly fresh film. It has family-friendly written all over it. It’s a one-time watch and maybe a pass for the theatres. If you are into musicals, this may be a good add-on to your list, however, don’t expect much from it.
All in all, Music School delivers a social message on the importance of extracurricular activities in children’s lives. Given the fact that it’s a musical, with the predictable second half, it may make it a tedious watch. It’s a movie that takes you back to your childhood and reminds you of the importance of pursuing your passions, regardless of societal expectations.

Music School is about a music teacher from Goa, Mary (played by Shriya Saran). She joins a school as a music teacher, however, her classes are dismissed. The school focuses more on academics than on the arts. She barely has students attending her class. Manoj (played by Sharman Joshi) is a drama teacher at the same school, and he helps Mary find a house in the society in which he lives. At a time when she is about to give up, Manoj suggests to Mary that she start her own music school, and the duo together start music and drama classes in the apartment. They decide to enact a play. They get a few admissions, but the main students who are part of the play are forced by their parents to only study and not take part in extracurriculars. Samyuka (played by Gracy Goswami) is the daughter of the commissioner of police (Prakash Raj). She is the key person in the play. Music School is about how these children pursue their passions for music, dance, and drama, along with or sometimes without studies.
Performances:
We have four key performers in the entire show: Shriya, Sharman, Gracy, and Ozu Barua.
Shriya is a well-known dancer. She mesmerises with her performance and dance moves in this movie. Her introduction song, "I am from Goa," was a pleasure to watch. The actress got ample screen space to show her talents — as an actor and as a performer. As a music teacher from Goa, she did complete justice to her role.
Sharman plays the role of a drama teacher, and he has a sad past. He is a single parent to a beautiful, doll-like girl. He displayed all his emotions pretty well. We get to see a small love story between Shriya and Sharman, and the actor has done a good job.
Gracy was so glamorous in the movie that we just couldn’t stop looking at her. Not just acting, she also utilised the role to its fullest extent to showcase her dancing skills. She wore the skin of her character very well. Her name is Gracy, as is her performance.
Ozu plays the son of a watchman in the society in which Mary and Manoj live. He is a football player. He was cute and fun to watch.
The movie has a huge cast. Others, including Prakash Raj, Leela Samson, Benjamin, Vinay Varma were all fine in their elements.
One character that looked utterly artificial for his role was Shaan. Shaan is a brilliant performer in general, but in this movie as Albert, he just looked very off.
Music School has a very simple story. It wants to convey the message that children are not meant to be caged or forced to do something that their parents love. This is a musical film, and as the title suggests, the whole film runs on music. The movie begins with a song that has lyrics that go, "The only way to reach the top is if you are the best. The only way to be the best is to pass all the test.
"This song alone is enough to prove the core concept of Music School. Paparao Biyyala, who is the writer and director, deviates from the story. He added up so many unnecessary tracks in the film that the core essence was lost by the end. He failed to convey the message he intended to, even with the music. By the end of the film, you have taken no message home. It doesn’t have a single thought-provoking dialogue; instead, we get to see some irrelevant love tracks, dates, etc.
It is pictured in the most old-fashioned way. We aren’t saying the film is all that bad, but in a time and era we are living in, the making of the film looked old school. It felt like the film was intended for kids and not parents.
The cinematography was fine, but the screenplay is scattered.
Music School is truly an Ilayaraja musical, and it is only his music that saves the film and lets you sit through the two hour movie.
Conclusion:
This is a film that deviates from its core concept. A slice-of-life drama film where the flavours are missing, but a family audience with teenage kids might like this. This is surely not for all age groups of people.
Vox verdict: Not everyone’s cup of tea.

‘Music School’ is a slice of life drama revolving around a theatre teacher and music teacher, trying to put together a stage musical based on ‘The Sound of Music’, helmed by former IAS officer and National Award-winning filmmaker Papa Rao Biyyala, marking his full-length feature directorial debut.
The movie opens with a theatre teacher struggling to make his presence count, while other streams take up all the space, students and credit.
Painting, music, theatre, poetry, and such soulful and nourishing creative streams are often sidelined as there is unprecedented academic pressure on students to score good grades, and find a place in reputed professional colleges. But nourishment of the soul is most important; there is nothing worse than the broken spirit of a child.

The most lovable actor, Venkatesh, has teamed up with HIT fame Sailesh Kolanu for the action drama Saindhav. This is the 75th film of Venkatesh, and it boasts an ensemble star cast. Versatile actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui is making his Tollywood debut. Let’s see how the movie is.
Set in a fictional city, Chandraprastha, the movie is about Saindhav Koneru, a.k.a SaiKo (Venkatesh). He works as a crane operator in the customs department. Saindhav has a daughter named Gayathri (Baby Sara Palekar), who is taken care of by Manogya (Shraddha Srinath), a cab driver. One day, Gayathri faints in school. Upon taking her to the hospital, the doctors reveal that Gayathri is suffering from Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). Gayathri needs to be given an injection worth 17 crores. What did Saindhav do next? Did he save his daughter? What is the connection between him and Mitra (Mukesh Rishi), who leads a cartel dealing in drugs and weapons? This is what the movie is about.
Plus Points:
Victory Venkatesh is one actor who can portray any role with immense conviction. Venky is the heart and soul of the film without an ounce of doubt. He carries the entire film on his shoulders from start to end. The actor’s screen presence is amazing and he packs a punch in the action scenes. There are a couple of good emotional scenes, and Venkatesh is at his usual best here.
The last half an hour of Saindhav is engaging with good action scenes and Venky’s action avatar. The Bujjikondave song is appealing on screen. Nawazuddin Siddiqui tries to bring fun element into the movie, and he evokes a few laughs here and there.
Through Saindhav, the makers tried to create awareness about the genetic disease SMA and the contributions being made by NGOs, which is good. The fight sequences are well composed, and they are neatly captured by cinematographer Manikandan. The interval action set piece stands out among all.
Minus Points:
Though the idea of Saindhav is good and has a lot of potential, the director couldn’t come up with an interesting narrative. The screenplay is flat for the most part. The world-building isn’t done well, and the first half an hour is slow and unexciting. There are many dull moments in the first hour.
Saindhav has a bunch of terrific actors, but none of them make any impact due to the way their characterizations are written. Even a terrific actor like Nawazuddin Siddiqui is wasted in a generic role. Nawazuddin Siddiqui tries his best, but the script doesn’t let him shine. Andrea Jeremiah, Shraddha Srinath, Ruhani Sharma, Jisshu Sengupta, Arya, Mukesh Rishi, and Jayaprakash deserved much better roles. There are logical errors in the story as well.
For any action film, the background score is very vital in enhancing the impact. Unfortunately, the background score provided by Santosh Narayanan is pretty bad and hardly adds any value to the film. In fact, the impact of neatly designed action blocks was brought down with the background score. In a few important moments, it was almost non-existent.
Technical Aspects:
The production values are solid, and the fictional city has been neatly depicted by cinematographer Manikandan. The art direction team did an impressive job. Had the background score been good, the movie could have been much better. The editing is decent.
The direction by Sailesh Kolanu is underwhelming. The young director presented Venkatesh in a good manner, but he couldn’t do the same with other artists. The idea is good, but the movie doesn’t deliver the necessary highs and lacks the gripping narrative.
On the whole, Saindhav has a good concept, but the narrative is underwhelming and flat for the most part. Venkatesh’s dashing performance and the last half an hour are the biggest assets of Saindhav. Despite having talented actors by his side, the director didn’t provide them with good roles. The background score is one more biggest drawback, which brings down the impact considerably. Venky’s performance and a few emotional moments make the movie an okayish fare. Hence, it is advised to keep your expectations in check.

Despite the film having a social message and creating awareness among its viewers, the film lacks the motivational or impactful value of its talking point. Music School gets the music right; that's really a good thing, but it stays far behind in the school of filmmaking. Review : Ravi Teja's Eagle - Explodes in parts. Review : Rajinikanth's Lal Salaam - Dull and disappointing. Review : Yatra 2 - Treat for YS Jagan fans.
The boring love track is one aspect that brings down the film considerably. The core point should have been highlighted more, and the movie's potential isn't utilized completely.
