Presentation Is Key: Ideas to Make Your Choral Performances More Memorable

Musicians are, by nature, creative people. Don’t you enjoy attending concerts where something completely surprising or different happens? I’m always looking for new ideas, fresh tricks, inventive ways to present a song and create a magical, memorable moment. Here are a few ideas.

  • Have your singers process in while singing, forming a circle around your audience or singing in the aisles.
  • Plan a “preshow” feature with small groups singing in the lobby or in the aisles—great for a cappella training! (Cirque du Soleil does this all the time, creating audience rapport or a special mood before each of their shows.)
  • Select a choral that features a special instrumental obbligato or small instrumental group.
  • Plan a teacher/student selection or a parent/student selection that requires minimum rehearsal time.
  • Program an audience sing-along, clap-along, or play-along. Teach the audience a rhythm if necessary before performing the song, then assign a student to be the audience “leader” and show the audience when it’s their time to participate. I’ve been known to pre-set small rhythm instruments at different seats. I’ve also invited the audience to find keys, tic-tac containers, or two writing utensils from their pockets or purses! Pens that click open even make a neat sound!
  • Assign or select individual students to prepare short, concise spoken introductions, especially if the song is in a foreign language, from another country, or features a text written by a famous person/poet. Tell your audience if there’s something special they should listen for during the performance of that song.
  • If several groups are performing, connect your concert with featured performers, soloists, or small groups (audition and work with them beforehand).
  • Invite a sign-language specialist to your concert to sign an inspirational song.
  • Consider hosting a “pyramid concert” with your feeder schools, with each level performing individual selections. Then plan a big group finale with all the participants singing from their seats or on stage. Make sure that siblings sing side by side for an extra touch!
  • While performing a special “music” or “friendship” song, project a powerpoint featuring photos of your singers during rehearsals or on a recent trip or music tour.

How else can you make a performance memorable? What have you tried? Let us know in the comments below!

Six of the best: 20th-century British choral works

We name half a dozen choral works to sing loudly and proudly about

BBC Music Magazine

There couldn’t be a finer work to get the season going than Elgar’s big-hitting, dramatic oratorio, which was one of the first of a number of first-rate large-scale choral works to flow from the pens of British composers over the course of the 20th century. To celebrate those works, we choose six of the best, while also raising a glass, of course, to the Proms season itself. Cheers!

1. Elgar : The Kingdom

After The Dream of Gerontius and The Apostles , The Birmingham Triennial Music Festival commissioned Elgar (above) to write The Kingdom for its 1906 festival. This mighty oratorio follows on from where The Apostles left off, and narrates the lives of Jesus’s disciples, leading to the foundation of the early church.

Elgar had considered The Kingdom as the slow movement in a trilogy that started with The Apostles , but never got round to writing the third instalment.

2. Vaughan Williams : Dona nobis pacem

Dona nobis pacem (‘Grant us peace’) is a cantata written by Vaughan Williams that was first performed in 1936 to mark the centenary of the Huddersfield Choral Society . Vaughan Williams, who was determined to create an English voice in his music, wrote with an uncanny prescience.

Just as the gathering orchestral clouds of his The Lark Ascending in 1914 appeared to forewarn of dark days ahead, here, three years before World War Two, the ominous tone unmistakeably hints at his unease at the direction in which Europe was heading.

  • Six of the best contraltos of all time
  • The 20 Greatest Tenors of all time

3. Tippett: A Child of Our Time

The first performance of A Child of Our Time took place in London in 1944 and, again, was triggered by events of the time – this secular oratorio has its origins in Tippett’s reaction to the Nazi regime’s notorious ‘Kristallnacht’ that followed the shooting of a German diplomat by a Polish Jew in 1938.

Tippett’s libretto narrates the story through the voice of a pacifistic non-believer. His quintessentially British musical language can be seen through his madrigal-like emphasis to the natural stresses of words, while elements such as the tango accompaniment to the tenor solo ‘I have no money for my bread’ also shows influences from popular music.

4. Howells: Hymnus Paradisi

His confidence rocked badly by a boorish critical reception to his Second Piano Concerto in 1925, Howells would go on to confine himself mainly to smaller-scale liturgical music in later life. In between, though, came this intensely personal yet dramatic work for soloists, choir and orchestra, written after the death from polio of his son Michael, aged just nine, in 1935.

Howells kept the work to himself until Vaughan Williams convinced him to allow it to be performed at The Three Choirs Festival in 1950. Howells later remarked: ‘The sudden loss of an only son … might impel a composer … to seek release and consolation in a language and terms most personal to him. Music may well have power … to offer that release and comfort. It did so in my case.’

  • Six of the best orchestral players
  • Six of the best love songs without words

5. Britten : War Requiem

Britain’s most significant 20th-century choral work? Quite possibly. The War Requiem was first performed in 1962 to mark the consecration of the new Coventry Cathedral, rebuilt amid the ruins of the old cathedral which had been destroyed in World War Two.

Britten’s mastery of text-setting is at its finest here – the traditional Latin Requiem Mass, depicting human suffering, is sung and played by a large orchestra, chorus and solo soprano, and interspersed with First World War texts by Wilfred Owen, sung by male soloists and a chamber orchestra. The overall effect its exceptionally moving.

  • Five essential works by Benjamin Britten

6. Sally Beamish: The Knotgrass Elegy

Finally, we amble over into the 21st century for The Knotgrass Elegy , written in 2001 by the Scottish composer Sally Beamish.

Beamish’s work, which coincidentally was also premiered at the BBC Proms by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus under Sir Andrew Davis, uses texts by the poet Donald Saunders and has a green message to it – the words mourn the disappearance (from pesticides) of the Knotgrass of the title, and with it the decrease in population of life higher up in the food chain.

The music itself is rich in variety, with influences that include jazz, folk and cabaret.

Before we can dive into a study of Bach’s cantatas, we need to learn about an important element of Lutheran sacred music: the chorale. Bach worked these chorales or hymn tunes into many of his church cantatas, and the three movements from Cantata 140 Wachet auf all make use of the chorale tune on which that cantata is based.

Introduction

A chorale is a melody to which a hymn is sung by a congregation in a German Protestant Church service. The typical four-part setting of a chorale, in which the sopranos (and the congregation) sing the melody along with three lower voices, is known as a chorale harmonization . In certain modern usage, this term may include classical settings of such hymns and works of a similar character.

Chorales tend to be simple and singable tunes. The words are often sung to a rhyming scheme and are in a strophic form (the same melody used for different verses). Within a verse, many chorales follow the AAB pattern of melody that is known as the German bar form.

Figure 1. The third stanza in Johann Sebastian Bach's setting as the final movement of his chorale cantata Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, BWV 140

Starting in 1523, Martin Luther began translating worship texts into German from the Latin, so that the people could understand, continue to learn and participate. This created an immediate need for a large repertoire of new chorales. He composed some chorales himself, such as A Mighty Fortress . For other chorales he used Gregorian chant melodies used in Roman Catholic worship and fitted them with new German texts, sometimes adapting the same melody more than once. For example, he fitted the melody of the hymn “Veni redemptor gentium” to three different texts, “Verleih uns Frieden gnädiglich,” “Erhalt uns, Herr, bei deinem Wort,” and “Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland.” A famous example is “Christ lag in Todes Banden,” which is based on the tune of the Catholic Easter Sequence, “Victimae Paschali Laudes.” As early as 1524, Johann Walter published Eyn geystlich Gesangk Buchleyn , the first hymnal for choir, in Wittenberg.

Johann Sebastian Bach harmonised hundreds of chorales, typically used at the end of his cantatas and concluding scenes in his Passions. In his St Matthew Passion , he set five stanzas of “O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden” in four different ways. He also used hymns as the base for his cycle ofchorale cantatas and chorale preludes. Bach concentrated on the chorales especially in the Chorale cantatas of his second annual cycle, composed mostly in 1724–25.

Today, many of the Lutheran chorales are familiar as hymns used in Protestant churches, sometimes sung in four-voice harmony.

Derived Forms

Chorales also appear in chorale preludes, pieces generally for organ designed to be played immediately before the congregational singing of the hymn. A chorale prelude includes the melody of the chorale, and adds contrapuntal lines. One of the first composers to write chorale preludes was Samuel Scheidt. Bach’s many chorale preludes are the best-known examples of the form. Later composers of the chorale prelude include Johannes Brahms, such as Eleven Chorale Preludes, and Max Reger who composed Wie schön leucht’ uns der Morgenstern on Nicolai’s hymn, among many others.

Anton Bruckner make frequent use of the chorale as a compositional device, based on his understanding of musical settings of the liturgy and Johann Sebastian Bach’s chorale preludes. He used it in his symphonies, masses and motets, for example Dir, Herr, dir will ich mich ergeben  and In jener letzten der Nächte , often in contrast to and combination with the fugue, as in Psalm 22 and in the Finale of Symphony No. 5.

The Importance of Presentation In Choir

The Importance of Presentation In Choir

Presentation in a choral concert is an essential aspect of every performance – and there are several different kinds of presentation that inform a performance:

#1. Visual presentation:

The goal of choir is to present a multitude of varied sounds as one voice. Our objective then, could be hampered by an incongruous visual presentation. This is why we wear uniforms at concerts – when we look uniform, our visual presentation becomes unified, and helps us to present a unified sound. We also strive to stand still, or if we are using movement, we seek to have unified movement as well, helping us to present the best choral sound possible!

#2. Auditory presentation:

Our presentation of sound is obviously one of the most important aspects of a choral concert. We spend a great deal of time working on creating blended sound; focusing on our vowels, listening, and our harmonizing skills. More than that though, we work on the dynamics, tempo, and word-painting to present our best sound during a concert. The mood that we can create with our sound helps us to convey the essential aspects of music that audiences love!

#3. Storytelling:

Another essential aspect to a choral performance is storytelling. Music is about communicating, and since singers have the added layer of text to inform our performance, how we present our pieces to the audience is essential. Our choristers spend time in rehearsal discussing the meaning of pieces, as well as the history of the music, and the composer who wrote the music. All of this information, as well as our own interpretations of the music help us to convey the meaning of our music to the audience!

Lesson 2: Rules of Chorale Harmony

Prior Knowledge: Scales, chord construction and closely related keys.

Content of Lesson: Focusing on the basic “rules” of chorale harmonisation. Remember, these are more like guidelines to help you produce the best possible part writing, which is key to the chorale style. If you are studying for a qualification, it is best to stick with the “rules are rules” mindset!

A Brief Outline of the Chorale Style

Chorale harmony is also commonly referred to as four-part harmony, named after the number of parts that make up the choir. Chorales are written primarily to be sung by a four-voice choir in a standard SATB setup:

S oprano                       A lto                 T enor               B ass

These voices are typically written in one of two ways, using either open or closed scoring. Open scoring, also known as vocal scoring, is written with each voice contained on its own stave, making for ease of reading and singing for performers. Closed scoring is written with two staves, one containing Soprano and Alto (in treble clef) and the other containing Tenor and Bass (in bass clef). This allows for easier study of harmony in my opinion, while still retaining ease of singing albeit with more ledger lines in the Tenor!

Closed Scoring:

modern chorale presentation

Open Scoring:

modern chorale presentation

Part writing is as key to the chorale style as the harmonic progressions. You can think of part writing as the horizontal movement of individual parts within the texture, while the harmony itself works vertically. The two work in tandem, resulting in chords that flow smoothly due to the well-written independent parts.

The basic rules of four-part harmony will guide you to create music in this style.

Rule 1: Avoidance of Parallel Fifths and Octaves

Parallel fifths and octaves   occur when two parts that are a fifth or octave   apart move in the same direction to new notes that are the same interval apart. Often, they are relatively easy to spot:

modern chorale presentation

However, sometimes they do become more difficult to identify or avoid!

modern chorale presentation

Most of the time, you will only have to concern yourself with standard parallel fifths and octaves, however you should also be on the lookout for exposed fifths . These are where the melody moves by leap to another note, in similar motion to the bass part (moving in the same direction), and the resulting harmony is at the interval of a fifth or octave. These are considered poor harmony in chorales, as the similar motion combined with the perfect intervals between the outer parts distracts too much from the rest of the harmony. Your ear is attracted to it, and therefore distracted by it.

Our first rule tells us that parallel and exposed fifths and octaves should be avoided. There are a few reasons for this:

  • The intervals of a 5 th and 8 ve are considered perfect intervals. Their strong sound is very distinct, and therefore consecutive intervals of these types tend to distract from the rest of the texture.
  • There are only ever four voices sounding at once. Two or more voices singing consecutively in parallel tend to sound as one part, and thus reduces the number of different parts.
  • Regular consecutive parallels reduce the options available for the rest of the parts when it comes to harmony. It becomes much harder to build interesting parts with the remaining voices if two or more are moving so strongly in the same direction!

Task 1: Parallels Task

Identify all of the parallels in the following example of “bad” harmony. There are both parallel and exposed 5 ths or 8 ves in this example (there are many!).

modern chorale presentation

Rule 2: Part Spacing

Part spacing concerns the vertical distance between each part, in the case of chorales between Soprano and alto, alto and tenor, and tenor and bass.

Changes in part spacing effect the texture of the music. Vocal music in particular is sensitive to changes in part spacing, as voices are prone to quite extreme timbre changes across the pitch range. Chorales have a particular sound that comes not just from the avoidance of parallels, but also from the spacing of the chords so that the timbres are balances nicely.

The part spacing rule is as follows:

  • No part in a chorale should be further than an octave away from its neighbour, e xcept the bass voice.
  • This can be remembered by using the phrase “the bass fills the space!”, (or alternatively, get Megan Trainor’s All About That Bass  stuck in your head for days…).

By extension of this rule, it is best to write chorales in such a way as the distance between the tenor and soprano parts is never more than an octave and a 5 th , but these parts should usually be as closely spaced as possible.

modern chorale presentation

Task 2: Part Spacing Task

To get your head round how the parts should be spaced, complete the following five chords on manuscript paper, ensuring that spacing is kept within the limits defined above.

modern chorale presentation

Rule 3: Steady Inner Harmonies

This is perhaps the most ‘flexible’ rule in that it is not strictly the case in all situations. However, as with the other rules it will help yield good harmony.

First of all, we must consider the roles of each voice:

  • The Soprano will take the melody , while the bass will take the bass line . These two parts must balance each other, with a strong melody being accompanied by a strong bass line.

The soprano and alto should work well as a two-part texture without the addition of other parts.

  • The alto and tenor will share the inner harmonies.

They should add colour and fullness to the texture created by soprano and bass alone. They are the crucial supporting roles that make chorales work so well.

In order to keep the parts well balanced, we must consider the contour (shape) of each part:

  • The soprano contains the melody , and will likely be a combination of steps and leaps .
  • The bass contains the bass line , which will likely include more leaps than the melody.

To balance these parts, and not distract from them, the alto and tenor parts should have a steady and mostly stepwise contour, with only occasional leaps over a third. This holds the texture together by contrasting the more mobile outer parts with steady inner parts.

modern chorale presentation

In the example above, you can clearly see all the elements of part-writing at work. There are leaps in the soprano melody and the bass (bar 1 beat 3) while the middle parts area very steady, in this example never leaping at all ( Ah, the mastery of Bach! I hear you cry!).

Task 3: Inner Harmony Task

Following the guidelines above, as well as using correct part spacing and avoiding forbidden parallels, complete the inner harmony in the following example. The bass and soprano are given for you.

modern chorale presentation

You should now be able to:

  • Understand what parallel and exposed fifths and octaves are, and identify them in a score.
  • Create well-spaced chords.
  • Compose inner harmonies that are steady and appropriate to the chorale style.

When you can do this, you are ready for Lesson 3: Basic Non-Harmony (Non-Essential) Notes.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

modern chorale presentation

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

modern chorale presentation

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

modern chorale presentation

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

modern chorale presentation

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

modern chorale presentation

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

modern chorale presentation

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA
