500 words essay on kindness.

The world we live in today has been through a lot of things from world wars to epidemics, but one thing which remained constant throughout was resilience and kindness. Moreover, it was the spirit to fight back and help out each other. Kindness must be an essential and universal quality to make the world a better place. essay on kindness

Importance of Kindness

Kindness towards nature, animals and other people has the ability to transform the world and make it a beautiful place for living. But, it is also important to remember that kindness towards you is also essential for personal growth.

Kindness is basically being polite, compassionate and thoughtful. Every religion and faith teaches its followers to be kind. Most importantly, kindness must not limit to humans but also to every living creature.

Even nature has its own way of showing kindness. For instance, the trees grow fruits for us and provide us with shade. One must not see kindness as a core value but as a fundamental behavioural element. When you are kind to your loved ones, you create a stable base.

As people are becoming more self-centred today, we must learn kindness. We must try to integrate it into ourselves. You might not know how a small act of kindness can bring about a change in someone’s life. So, be kind always.

Kindness Always Wins

There is no doubt that kindness always wins and it has been proven time and again by people. Sid is a greedy man who does not share his wealth with anyone, not even his family members.

He also does not pay his workers well. One day, he loses his bag of gold coins and loses his temper. Everyone helps him out to search for it but no one finds it. Finally, his worker’s little son finds the bag.

Upon checking the bag, he sees all the coins are there. But, his greed makes him play a trick on the poor worker. He claims that there were more coins in the bag and the worker stole them.

The issue goes to the court and the judge confirms from Sid whether his bag had more coins to which he agrees. So, the judge rules out that as Sid’s bag had more coins , the bag which the worker’s son found is not his.

Therefore, the bag gets handed to the worker as no one else claims it. Consequently, you see how the worker’s son act of kindness won and paid him well. On the other hand, how Sid’s greediness resulted in his loss only.

Kindness Essay

Kindness is a valuable trait that can have a positive impact on our lives and the lives of those around us. It can help to build strong relationships, reduce stress and anxiety, and improve our physical health. However, it's important to remember that being kind can be difficult at times, and it takes practice and patience to make it a consistent part of our daily lives. Here are a few sample essays on kindness.

Kindness Essay

100 Word Essay On Kindness

There has been a saying that “be kind and do kind” means that be soulfully and mindfully kind so that you can do. Kindness is a type of behaviour that is marked by acts of generosity, consideration, rendering assistance or concern for others without expecting any praise or reward in return for the same.

Kindness is one of the main topics in the Bible, and it is a topic which is well taught and praised by every religion in the world. Nietzsche has said kindness and love are considered to be the "most curative herbs and agents in human intercourse". Not only this but there have been practitioners who have identified kindness as one of the most beautiful things to happen to mankind.

200 Word Essay On Kindness

Kindness and love are closely intertwined, as one often leads to the other. When we act out of generosity and do something good for others, we are likely to receive similar or even greater acts of kindness in return. This is the principle of karma, where we reap what we sow. By being kind to others, we are able to empathise and put ourselves in their shoes, and in doing so, we are able to make a positive impact on their lives.

The practice of kindness has many benefits, not just for the recipients, but also for the giver. It can help to build friendships, bring joy and make life more fulfilling. In a world where competition can often be fierce, it is important to teach the younger generation the importance of kindness and generosity. By fostering these qualities in schools, we can help to create a kinder, more compassionate society.

There are countless books, articles and other resources that explore the topic of kindness in depth. But despite this, society as a whole has yet to fully embrace a culture of kindness on a broader level. By making a conscious effort to be kind to others, we can work together to make the world a better place for all.

500 Word Essay On Kindness

Kindness is a powerful force that has the ability to change lives, both for the giver and the receiver. It is defined as the act of being considerate and caring towards others, and it encompasses a wide range of behaviors, from small acts of generosity to large acts of selflessness.

One of the benefits of being kind is that it can help to build strong and meaningful relationships. When we are kind to others, we demonstrate that we care about them and that we value their well-being. This can help to create a sense of trust and understanding, which are essential ingredients for any healthy relationship.

Another benefit of kindness is that it can help to reduce stress and anxiety. Studies have shown that acts of kindness can trigger the release of feel-good hormones in the brain, such as oxytocin and serotonin, which can help to improve our mood and reduce feelings of stress.

Additionally, kindness can also have a positive impact on our physical health. Research has shown that people who engage in acts of kindness on a regular basis have a lower risk of developing certain chronic conditions, such as heart disease and diabetes.

One way to make kindness a regular practice is to set small and achievable goals for ourselves. For example, we can make a commitment to perform one act of kindness per day, or to make a conscious effort to be more understanding and empathetic towards others. Another way is to remind ourselves that kindness is not only about grand gestures, but also about small actions that can have a big impact on someone's life.

Personal Experience

I remember the day when a severe storm hit my village, leaving many of the houses damaged and people homeless. As I walked around the village, I saw the destruction and the despair on the faces of my fellow villagers. I knew that I had to do something to help.

I rallied my friends and together we set out to repair the houses and provide shelter for those who had lost theirs. It was hard work, but we were determined to help as many people as possible. We worked tirelessly, through the rain and the wind, never once complaining.

As we went from house to house, I could see the gratitude and appreciation on the faces of the people we were helping. It was a small act of kindness, but it made such a big difference in their lives.

Through our efforts, the village slowly began to recover, and the people were able to rebuild their homes and their lives. But the kindness we had shown was not forgotten. We had shown the villagers that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope, and that through kindness and compassion, we can overcome any obstacle.

From that day on, I felt proud of my actions, and I realized the power of kindness. I had shown that one person's kindness can make a huge impact in the lives of many. I felt a sense of accomplishment and happiness that I was able to bring people together and make a difference.

Essay on Kindness 500+ Words

Kindness is a simple yet powerful virtue that has the potential to make the world a better place. It is the act of being caring, considerate, and compassionate toward others. In this essay, we will explore the profound importance of kindness, its impact on individuals and society, and why it should be cherished and practiced by all.

Defining Kindness

Kindness is the quality of being friendly, generous, and helpful to others without expecting anything in return. It’s about extending a helping hand, offering a comforting word, or simply being there for someone in need. Kindness can be shown through small acts of courtesy or grand gestures of benevolence.

Dr. Jane Stevens, a renowned psychologist, suggests that kindness is an innate human quality that can be cultivated and nurtured. It’s a fundamental part of our social nature, and when practiced regularly, it can lead to a more harmonious and caring society.

The Impact on Individuals

Kindness has a remarkable impact on the well-being of individuals. Studies have shown that acts of kindness can reduce stress, increase happiness, and improve overall mental health. When we are kind to others, it not only benefits them but also lifts our own spirits.

For example, research by the National Institute of Mental Health found that individuals who regularly engage in acts of kindness report lower levels of anxiety and depression. Kindness creates a positive feedback loop, benefiting both the giver and the recipient.

Building Stronger Relationships

Kindness is a vital ingredient in building and maintaining strong relationships. Whether it’s within families, friendships, or communities, acts of kindness create bonds of trust and mutual support. Kindness fosters a sense of connection and belonging.

Dr. Mark Williams, a relationship expert, emphasizes that kind gestures, such as listening with empathy or offering help in times of need, strengthen the foundations of relationships. It’s these small acts of kindness that build trust and intimacy.

The Ripple Effect

Kindness has a ripple effect that extends beyond the immediate act. When we are kind to someone, they are more likely to pass on that kindness to others, creating a chain reaction of positive behavior. This ripple effect can lead to a more compassionate and caring society.

A study by the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation found that one act of kindness often inspires three more acts of kindness. This demonstrates the potential for kindness to create a domino effect of goodwill in our communities.

Kindness in Society

Kindness is not just a personal virtue; it is also a cornerstone of a harmonious society. When communities are filled with kind and compassionate individuals, they tend to be more inclusive, supportive, and resilient.

According to the World Happiness Report, countries with a strong sense of community and social support tend to rank higher in overall happiness. This suggests that kindness plays a pivotal role in creating happier and more harmonious societies.

Conclusion of Essay on Kindness

In conclusion, kindness is a precious and transformative virtue that has the power to improve our lives and the world around us. It benefits individuals by promoting well-being, strengthening relationships, and creates a positive ripple effect in society. Kindness is not a scarce resource; it is something that each of us can cultivate and share with others.

As we navigate through life, let us remember the importance of kindness and strive to incorporate it into our daily interactions. Kindness is not just a choice; it is a responsibility that we owe to ourselves and to humanity. By practicing kindness, we contribute to a world that is more compassionate, caring, and full of positive possibilities.

By being kind, we can make a safe and welcoming space where people can work together and show care for one another. So, let us be kind, not only today but every day, and make the world a brighter and happy place for everyone.

Long Essay on Kindness (500 Words)

Kindness is a simple yet significant action that can change people’s lives. Kindness is not only important to an individual, but it may also be a beneficial activity for all of humanity. It means caring about other people and being kind to them no matter who they are or what their situation is. Kindness means being friendly, thoughtful, and helpful. It shows that you care about and value other people. Also, kind people are the best people in the world.

Kindness: Making Big Differences

Kindness can make good things happen in the lives of both the person who shows kindness and the person who receives it. Whether it’s a smile, a kind word, or a helping hand, a simple act of kindness can make someone’s day and lift their spirits. It could turn a bad day into a good one and make people believe in humanity again. Also, acts of kindness can help create a sense of togetherness and harmony in a community, making it a more caring and peaceful place for everyone.

Importance of Kindness

Kindness makes people feel good, lowers stress, and makes relationships stronger. Studies have shown that acts of kindness can release the hormone oxytocin. Oxytocin makes people feel happier and less anxious. It helps us feel grateful and satisfied, which lets us enjoy life more peacefully. People who are kind can achieve success in their lives. Kind and caring people are looked up to by everyone. It is also said that, being a good human starts with being a kind human.

Ways to be Kind

Kindness can be practiced in countless ways. It can be as easy as listening to someone who is in need, being patient, showing gratitude, or doing random acts of kindness. Kindness can come in the form of donating time or money to a good cause, helping people who are less wealthy, etc. Kindness to oneself is also very important. Kindness isn’t just for people; we should also be kind to our family, friends, and coworkers if we want to have strong, peaceful relationships with them.

Disadvantages of Kindness

While the benefits of kindness are undeniable, it is important to recognize that being excessively kind can have its drawbacks. Some individuals may take advantage of kind-heartedness, leading to emotional exhaustion. Kind people always forgive the mistakes of the people they love. This is a big mistake, because the person will keep making the same mistakes over and over again. Kind people are easy to take advantage of because people know they will only be nice to them and help them every time.

Kindness is an important part of being human and has the power to change people’s lives for the better. Through acts of kindness, we can build a more caring and peaceful society and help people understand and care about each other more. Therefore, let us promise to practice kindness in our daily lives, as even the simplest act of kindness can make a remarkable difference in someone’s life.

I hope the above provided essay on Kindness will be helpful in understanding how kindness can make a big difference in our life.

A person with a pleasant temperament, behaviour and respect for others is said to be very kind. Such humans are sensitive toward others. Whenever humans want them, they assist others around them and not hesitate to go past their limits to convey a smile in other people’s faces.

Mercy is taken into consideration as a distinctive divine feature. It’s far from tough to look at it in current lifestyles. Human beings are within the race for lifestyles inside the race to fulfil their pastimes.

Someone has rightly stated, “in case you display kindness at least once, your day will not go awful”. Being type and compassionate to others brings brilliant pleasure. The joy of giving rather than taking is substantial. Mercy draws us towards God and affords inner peace.

We cannot count Kindness

What’s the maximum commonplace symptom in human beings courting? It’s far not anything but kindness. No man or woman likes to be friends with rude, boastful, selfish and boastful humans.

Every person likes folks that are humble, type and generous. We have to be the human beings; however, as it’s far said that the start is from home, therefore we need to begin with those close to and expensive and valuable to us.

Many humans are generous and well-mannered closer to their acquaintances, buddies and Co-employees, but they behave rudely to their circle of relatives, mother and father, children and siblings.

They scold them, do no longer pay a lot of interest to them, and frequently argue with them. Such human beings cannot be referred to as the type.

If a person could be very kind at heart, he can be typed at home besides out of doors. Being kind to people without waiting for whatever to go back brings inner peace and happiness . It makes existence exciting.

Even though we ought to engage in acts of kindness without anticipating something in return, it is said that any act of kindness, even a small one, is going not to be noted. The cause for that is that God sees us all the time, and we may recognise them, to be honest in their manner.

Helping others and displaying kindness to them gives us a sense of pleasure, and what we provide quickly comes to us in abundance. It’s also referred to as regulating karma.

But, if we assume to reveal kindness to others thinking we will get something in return, it will now not be considered an act of kindness. This is an alternatively selfish act.

Kindness in Religion & Culture

Non-violence, love, sacrifice, sympathy and kindness are taught in all predominant religions. Faith is the manner of life to make a person with favoured characteristics, through adopting which he can refine his character.

In Hindu spiritual texts, it is said to have compassion for women, children, elderly, unwell and exploited humans. There’s no want to be inventive in existence for kindness; we can follow it in lifestyles through liberalising your heart.

This mission isn’t as easy. In life, someone does the equal work in which he receives honour, and wealth in the shape of reward, while in a change of kindness, handiest you can get the delight and distinctive feature of making others sense happy, which very few people need to get.

A cultured man or woman always displays sympathy inside the sadistic. He facilitates everyone whilst he is wanted thru his help; he continually tries to bring a grin at the face of human beings.

By taking a few minutes out of it slowly, birds also can be awakened to their kindness via setting a grain on them. Something we deliver in existence, we additionally get the same in trade.

Whilst many humans are surrounded by using problems in existence, they chant the melody in their hostility, at the same time as a few people are available in a touch of difficulty, then those who help them become a gift. Conditions in existence are just identical.

There is a distinction between the individual. A primary character is a ruthless person who does now not assist anyone, at the same time as the second is a gentle individual who usually carries others with him.

Kindness to animals

We should show compassion not best to people but additionally to animals. Many humans throw stones at road dogs and cows to intimidate them. It performed as self-protection then first-class, but many humans do it just for a laugh. We have to be kind to them.

Treating animals well and feeding them are methods to show kindness to them. We waste a lot of food. We throw our rest meals inside the rubbish can. In place of throwing it away, we must feed it to cats, dogs and cows roaming around our residence.

We can display kindness to them with the aid of adopting them. Also, we can add grains of grain to birds sitting in our balcony or garden. These small and random acts of mercy will now not only be proper for those birds and animals; however, you may additionally experience better about yourself.

Ten lines to remember

  • Kindness approach is to be friendly and supportive to the surrounding humans.
  • The kind acts we do aren’t most effective a boon for the recipient, but additionally a blessing for us.
  • Being the type to other humans, we no longer most effective assist them and convey a grin to their face
  • Not only with people, but we need to be kind with animals as well.

Long and Short Essay on Kindness in English

Kindness essay 1 (200 words).

Kindness simply means being good to people around us. It can be done by being polite to them, offering them emotional support, helping them financially, boosting their morale or by simply being supportive to them. Kind words and kind deeds done by us are not only a boon for the recipient but are also a blessing to us. When we help others with their tasks, are polite to them and do other such acts of kindness it gives us a sense of accomplishment and joy.

Kindness has been described differently in different religious books and literature in the past. However, they all echo the same thought. All of them advocate that human beings must show kindness to other human beings as well as other creatures. We must be polite, friendly and helpful. While we should exhibit kindness we must not do it with the aim of getting anything in return. Kindness is a selfless act.

If God has been kind enough to give us the things we need we must be kind to others and render help in whatever way we can. As Lord Buddha said, “A generous heart, kind speech and a life of service and compassion are the things that renew humanity”.

Kindness Essay 2 (300 words)

Introduction

A person with a pleasant disposition and a concern for others is said to be kind. Such people are empathetic towards others. They help those around them whenever there is a need and never hesitate to go out of their way to bring a smile on other people’s face.

Small Acts of Kindness can Make Big Difference

Showing kindness towards others does not necessarily mean doing something big for them. It can be something as small as being polite and offering emotional support to someone. It can be something as tiny as passing a smile to the old lady who sits all alone in her balcony watching people go by or giving a small bite of your bread to the sparrow that tweets on your terrace every day. Such acts of kindness don’t take much but can make a big difference in the other person’s life.

You don’t have to be a millionaire to offer help and be nice to people around. You just need to have a good heart. Each one of us has something to give to the world. We just need to recognize what it is. Besides, we need to understand the need to be kind to people around us. We need to understand that the world would become a much better place if people are kind to each other.

By being kind to the other people we do not only help them and light a smile on their face but also feel good at a deeper level. It gives a sense of satisfaction.

We can rarely find kind people around. In fact, if we look at it, are we kind ourselves? We may feel the pain of people around us but how many times have we lend a helping hand towards them? If we expect others to be kind towards us, we must first inculcate this habit in ourselves.

Kindness Essay 3 (400 words)

It is rightly said, “You will never have a completely bad day if you show kindness at least once”. Being kind and compassionate towards others brings immense joy. The joy of giving is much greater than that of receiving. Kindness gets us closer to God and renders inner peace.

Acts of Kindness Never Go Unnoticed

While we must indulge in acts of kindness selflessly without expecting anything in return, however it is said that no act of kindness, even the smallest one, goes unnoticed. This is because God is watching us at all times. And he is known for being fair in his ways.

Being kind in general by being polite with others keeps us in a good mood as compared to the times when we get into arguments, or judge others or raise our voice. Similarly, offering even a small help to someone makes us feel good about ourselves. Helping others and being kind to them gives us an immediate sense of satisfaction. And whatever we give comes back to us in abundance. This is also known as the law of Karma.

However, if we show kindness to others hoping that we will get something in return then it is not considered an act of kindness. It is rather an act of selfishness.

Kindness towards Animals

Not just with human beings, we must also be kind towards animals. Many people throw stones at the street dogs and cows to scare them away. It is alright if done as an act of self dense however many people do it just for fun. We must rather be kind towards them. Treating the animals appropriately and feeding them are two of the ways to show kindness towards them. We waste a lot of food ever now. We throw our leftover food in the dustbin. Instead of throwing it away like that, we must take out some time to feed cats, dogs and cows roaming around near our house with it. We can also show kindness towards them by adopting them. Likewise, we can feed the birds by hanging bird feeders in our lawn or balcony. These small and random acts of kindness will not only do good to these birds and animals but will also make you feel better about yourself.

People who indulge in charity work and help other people with various big and small tasks are happier than those who only work for themselves.

Kindness Essay 4 (500 words)

In many cultures kindness is considered to be an essential virtue. It is said to be among the seven essential virtues that the moral intelligence consists of. The other virtues include conscience, respect, tolerance, self-control, fairness and empathy. Being kind means being polite and friendly and helping those around us.

Kindness is an Uncommon Trait

Though essential, kindness is not a trait that is found commonly in people these days. In today’s times people have become extremely self-absorbed. All they can think about is themselves. The growing competition at various stages in our life is one of the main reasons why people are turning out to be this way. Everyone around is busy making themselves better and showing the world as to how better their life is compared to that of others. They do not hesitate hurting those in their way to achieve what they want. While there is nothing wrong with improvising oneself but one must understand that there is much more to life and it is not always just about them. People have become ungrateful and do not understand that God has been kind enough to them and they must in turn be kind towards others.

Now, while most people do not possess the trait of kindness, it can be embedded in them with little effort. This can be done by teaching its importance from the very beginning. Importance of kindness must be taught in school. Workshops must be conducted and lectures must be given to tell children as to why being kind to people is necessary. This subject must form an essential part of the curriculum in schools. It is essential to emphasize its importance repeatedly from the very beginning for people to understand and inculcate it.

Kindness is Essential in Relationships

What is the most common trait that people look for in a relationship? It is nothing else but kindness. Nobody likes to befriend people who are rude, arrogant, selfish and haughty. Everyone likes those who are polite, soft-hearted, kind and generous. We must be kind to those around but as it is said charity begins at home so we must start with our near and dear ones.

Many people are kind and polite to their neighbours, friends and colleagues but are rude with their immediate family members such as their wife, parents, children and siblings. They scold them, do not pay much attention towards them and often indulge in arguments with them. Such people cannot be called kind no matter how nice they are with people outside or the amount of charity they do. If they are not kind at home, they are merely donning a facade to maintain a good image outside. In reality, they are frustrated inside and all their frustration comes out at home.

If a person is really kind at heart, he will be equally kind at home as well as outside. Being kind to people without expecting anything in return renders inner peace and happiness. It makes life sweeter.

Practicing kindness is not difficult. Showering kindness on those around us should be the ultimate goal of each one of us. Try it and see how it can be one of the most joyful experiences in life.

Kindness Essay 5 (600 words)

A person who is kind is said to bear a good moral character. He is loved and talked highly about by people around. However, this should not be the reason to indulge in acts of kindness. Kindness is something that must be done selflessly. If we expect people to appreciate us or return the favour then it is not kindness, it is selfishness. It clearly indicates that we are doing it with a selfish motif.

Different Definitions of Kindness

Different learned people and religious scriptures have defined kindness differently in the past. As per Chinese teacher and philosopher, Confucius, “Of neighbourhoods, kindness is the most beautiful. How can the man be considered wise who when he had the choice does not settle in kindness”. He urges to “recompense kindness with kindness.”

As per ancient Greek philosopher and scientist, Aristotle, kindness means “helpfulness towards someone in need, not in return for anything, nor for the advantage of the helper himself, but for that of the person helped”. As per American writer and humorist, Mark Twain, “Kindness is the language which the dumb can speak, the deaf can hear & the blind can see.” As per Talmud, the central text of Rabbinic Judaism, “deeds of kindness are equal in weight to all the commandments.”

“I expect to pass through life but once. If therefore, there be any kindness I can show, or any good thing I can do to any fellow being, let me do it now, and not defer or neglect it, as I shall not pass this way again”, said the American philosopher, William Penn.

The definitions of kindness may differ but the essence of all these is the same. Kindness is referred to as an essential virtue.

God Has Been Kind to You; You Must Be Kind to Others

If God has been kind enough to give you a good life, you must be kind enough to help those around you build a good life too. This is to say that if you earn well then give a small amount of your earnings in charity. If you are good in studies then do not hesitate to help your fellow students if they come to you for any kind of assistance. If God has made you physically-abled then help those who aren’t. For instance, you can help a blind person cross the road or carry the grocery bag home for the old lady who lives in your neighbourhood. If you have enough space in your balcony or garden then hang bird feeder and keep a bowl of water filled for the birds. Donate your old clothes and shoes to the poor and needy. There are so many poor kids who roam around without shoes and clothes. A number of NGOs request people to help them serve such people. Even a small contribution from your side can make a difference. Likewise, do not waste food. Give the leftover food to those who need it instead of showing it the dustbin.

If you can take out some time from your schedule then get involved in social service. You can begin by providing basic education to the poor little children around your house who cannot afford to study in the school.

These are small examples of how you can spread kindness. Imagine if each one of us inculcates this quality and is kind to everyone around, this world will become a much better place to live.

People must be kind to those around them and see how things change for good. Being kind to others, helping them and spreading smiles does not only do good to the recipients but also offers a deep sense of satisfaction to the one who indulges in the act.

Essay On Kindness – 800 Words Essay

kindness words in essay

Kindness is the most beautiful quality. Kindness is like a rare flower which needs to be taken care of with the utmost care and requires love and dedication. Ignoring kindness means ignoring things such as how people feel, or their happiness. Kindness is something that everyone should have: not just those lucky ones who are born into wealth or privilege, but also those who struggle each day for their next breath. True kindness can never be measured because it doesn’t depend on what you have in your wallet, it depends on how much you care about someone – unconditionally. Kindness is not something that people come to expect from one another nowadays.

How can you teach someone how to be kind if you yourself have failed to demonstrate that trait? It’s like teaching someone about love: the main thing is you have to love yourself firstly, in order for it to become something meaningful and true. Kindness often goes unnoticed. Kindness is not something you can see from the outside of a person, but it is something which permeates into their soul. Good deeds are sometimes not rewarded with gratitude because they’re not recognized. We’ve all been kind to one another at some point, and I’m sure that we’d all like to be remembered as good people who do good things.

The best way to recognize someone’s kindness is by the way that they treat you. When someone shows me kindness, I always remember it – because kindness just feels right. It makes my heart smile, and my day a little brighter – even when I’m feeling down or in need of reassurance.

When someone is mistreated, it’s truly hard to know what to do. If we have become accustomed to people being mean and full of hate towards others, the best thing we can do is give them a shoulder to lean on so they can unload their frustrations and anger. We should never forget that everyone has feelings; and that they are also people too, with thoughts and emotions which are just as complicated as our own. Acknowledging a person’s feelings is the key to building the trust you need in order for them to confide in you – this trust being essential in order for being able to help them through their problems. It isn’t always easy to do the right thing – especially when we don’t know what is the right thing to do.

Kindness is something that everyone should have. People can be selfish and hurtful; they can be so mean and hateful that they’ll succeed in tearing a person’s world apart. They might do it on purpose, or out of ignorance. Sometimes people are just so lonely that they want to use someone else as a tool for their own amusement, sad as it may sound. And sometimes people are just plain unlucky: they might come from a family who constantly beats them up and treats them like dirt. They’ve been called names that I can’t even say, and they’ve been given scars that nobody can see but them. It isn’t always easy to be nice to people who are mean to you. Sometimes the best thing you can do is not to retaliate and walk away. Remember, it’s not your duty to save someone from themselves; it’s enough for you to care about yourself by being a good person in the first place.

Kindness is not about what you do to be nice, it’s about being a good person in the first place. Being nice is something that everyone should do for themselves and everyone else; it’s just natural to be kind and caring towards other people because being a good person is very important in life. Kindness can change the world so much that our actions if we’re kind to each other instead of hateful, could improve our lives greatly. We should make our own world better than we found it – not to boot us out from here, but so we can all be better off together.

Kindness comes from the heart; kindness is something which can never have an ending; if we use this trait wisely, it can be something which everyone can cherish. Kindness is a pure white flower which can bloom in the most difficult circumstances when it’s least expected. When someone goes out of their way to be kind, we should always appreciate them and remember them for the rest of our lives.

Nowadays, it takes a lot of courage and resilience to remain kind in the face of all the bad things that happen around us. Sometimes kindness is not enough – but if we persevere, it always wins in the end. Everyone around us needs a little kindness, and the more we give it, the better things will be.

If we remember to be kind – and we follow it up by doing something for others – the world will eventually be a better place.

Short essay on Kindness to Animals in 100 Words

All the living creatures on this planet have the right to live freely in nature. Today, however, many animals all over the world are suffering because of human cruelty. People don’t just kill animals for their meat but also their skins, tusks, horns, teeth, feathers and fur. Many animals are kept captive, tortured and made to perform in front of crowds of people.

Innocent lab animals are used all over the world to test newly developed chemical formulations. We should be kind to animals and all living creatures. We should never harm animals. Instead, we should feed them and take care of them whenever we can. After all, having compassion for others is what truly makes us human.

Short essay on Kindness to Animals in 200 Words

For thousands of years, human beings have hunted animals not just for food, but also for sports and fun. Many animals like elephants and horned rhinoceros have been killed for centuries for their tusks and horns. Animals like lions, tigers, monkeys and even dolphins are kept captive, tortured and made to perform in front of crowds of people.

The livestock animals kept in farms for their milk and meat live in such terrible conditions, unable to move freely. And of course, we can not forget the lab animals. Rabbits, guinea pigs, rats and mice are used all over the world to test new chemical formulas developed for humans.

In our day to day life, we all have come across people throwing stones at street dogs or kicking them. Many people don’t even think twice before running their cars over street animals. We must ask ourselves if the innocent animals deserve our cruelty.

They don’t bother us and just want to live peacefully. We should become more kind and compassionate towards animals and all other living beings. We shouldn’t harm animals or let others harm them. We should feed and take care of helpless animals. After all, having compassion for others is what truly makes us human.

Short essay on Kindness to Animals in 400 Words

All living beings on this planet were created and given life by the same divine force. All of us, whether it is human beings, plants or animals, have the right to live and be free. In the olden days, most kings and emperors spent their free time going on hunts to kill animals like deer, tigers, lions and elephants. The hunted animals were not eaten but just served as a trophy for the king.

Many big animals like elephants and horned rhinoceros are still killed for their tusks, horns and skins. Marine animals like sharks and whales are also killed to be served as delicacies in several high-end restaurants. Over the years, the population of these animals has greatly decreased and many exotic species are on the verge of becoming extinct.

We don’t have to go far to see animals suffering because of human cruelty. It is not hard to notice how mistreated the street dogs are. People throw stones at them, kick them and some even run their cars over them. Many animals are kept captive and made to perform in circuses. The livestock animals kept in farms for their milk and meat live in such terrible conditions, unable to move freely.

Their babies are taken away from them and killed as the people running the farms don’t see any value in keeping them alive. Horses and bullocks kept for pulling carts and ploughs are often not fed properly and made to work until they collapse. If we take a look at the cosmetic industry, so many high-end brands test their products on innocent animals. Rabbits, guinea pigs, rats and mice are all used to test new chemical formulas developed for beauty products. This greatly harms them.

Animals have every right to live freely in nature. Just because they cannot defend themselves, does not mean that we should keep torturing them for our gain. Kindness to animals and all other living creatures is a virtue. We should not harm animals and we should stop others from harming them as well. Many animals have lost their habitat and food sources because of deforestation and infrastructure developments done by human beings.

We should feed and take care of such animals instead of viewing them as a nuisance. Governments all over the world have taken various steps to stop illegal hunting and many organisations are trying their best to make life less cruel for farm and lab animals. But they can only do so much. It is on each one of us to become more compassionate and kind towards animals so that all living beings can live freely on this planet.

Being kind to others charges no money. It is a unique characteristic of showing love and caring for others selflessly. It is an act of making others happy without any specific reasons. This act helps in maintaining a long-lasting relationship based on honesty and loyalty. We were taught to be kind, be modest to everyone, take up various responsibilities, set our priorities, and make decisions when we were kids. Being kind is a sense of honesty, purity, loyalty, happiness, and integrity. Since we live in a society and share various relationships, we must make sure that our behaviour and actions do not harm others.

Kindness is an attribute that is essential in every individual. In our everyday life, we come across many strangers, but if we show them kindness and respect, we stay in their hearts forever. If you are kind, your attitude and behaviour prove you are different from the crowd. Your kind attitude can give you internal satisfaction and bring a bright smile to your face. Every individual should try to reflect the quality of kindness to the people around them. Every time you are kind to others, you become a better person. Your kindness will assist you when you are alone or depressed, or in need during your hard times. People will always be willing to help you and stand by you whenever needed. It might be a happy moment for you if you hurt others, but that does not last long; for others, it can be the most painful moment forever.

Kindness is a strong attitude that one must always have. Kindness is an act which has no description and no limitations. Kindness entails not just physical but also psychological support. The benefit is instant for the recipient, but the benefit is delayed and indirect for the doer. We must treat others with kindness without expecting reciprocation. We shall be remembered for every act of kindness we do. Kindness can assist you in developing positive relationships with people. People who do not know you will begin to like you right away. Kindness is the most valuable characteristic that comes at no cost. Even someone who has no money and wears only a rag on his body might be generous to others. Everyone should be kind to others. Kindness encompasses a wide range of behaviours. Integrity, empathy, respect, and decency are all essential components. Being modest shows your humility and lays the groundwork for kindness. Compassion conveyed via words is equally as valuable as kindness demonstrated through acts. The word ‘kindness’ has many different meanings around the world, yet its underlying meaning remains the same. We must be kind to other living beings, including animals.

How do you define kindness?

Kindness has no specific definition. It is an act of showing love, care, affection, and empathy, without any reason.

How does kindness affect our life?

Kindness affects our mentality and gives us internal peace. It reduces all stresses of life and brings smiles to our faces. Showing kindness and respect to others for a minute can keep you in the hearts of everyone for the rest of your life.

Maggie Nelson contemplates freedom through words and art in ‘Like Love’

The singular poet and critic gives readers a tour through her intellectual genealogy in a new collection of essays.

Maggie Nelson, author of "Like Love: Essays and Conversations."

Though Maggie Nelson’s new collection, “ Like Love: Essays and Conversations ,” is anchored in its second half by her stunning personal remembrance, ”My Brilliant Friend: On Lhasa de Sela,” some readers may be disappointed to learn that the book is not a memoir. Instead, “Like Love” is a personal intellectual genealogy, both a chart of Nelson’s influences, collaborators, and intimate friendships, and a map of her mind at work, 2006-present.

Though she identifies as a poet, Nelson’s renown stems from her work as a memoirist, specifically “The Argonauts,” a book about queer family, transitioning, parenting, and aesthetics which exemplifies Nelson’s special talent for blending personal narrative, theory, poetics, and storytelling into potent criticism.

In “The Argonauts,” winner of the 2016 National Book Critics Circle citation in criticism, Nelson claims that her writing process has always felt “more clarifying than creative.” Frequently, she elucidates her thoughts in nonfiction by citing other poets and theorists. Lacing quotations from her intellectual ancestors and her literary contemporaries through her prose, Nelson models a form of thinking through discourse that underwrites her straight-ahead books of art criticism such as “The Art of Cruelty” (2011) and “On Freedom: Four Songs of Care and Constraint” (2021).

Reading “Like Love” is akin to entering Nelson’s workroom to look at her maquettes, her conceptions in development, before we see them fully realized in the works above. It opens and closes with Nelson “woodshedding” in conversation with two of her central collaborators, Wayne Koestenbaum and Eileen Myles, respectively.

Nelson was 18 years old when she first saw Eileen Myles read her poetry at a public event. Myles, a tremendous multiform literary artist, has had a generative influence on Nelson’s own writing practice. “I can still see,” Nelson writes in “On Freedom,” “the little green Semiotext(e) paperback of Myles’s 1991 collection, Not Me , lying on a table at St. Mark’s Books, can still see myself picking it up for the first time, not knowing how much ‘freedom to’ was about to rush into my world.”

Reading Myles and Nelson thinking together three decades after their “introduction” is a delicious revelation. As a conversationalist, Nelson darts between interrogative and anecdotal modes, threading in strands of analytical thought. Reading her in discourse with Björk, Brian Blanchfield, and Jacqueline Rose, I’m reminded of an insightful claim that the British writer Olivia Laing once proffered: “the Nelsonian unit of thought is the paragraph … [it] allows for swerves and juxtapositions.”

“Like Love” is a shifting collage of chronologically arrayed review-essays, conversations, forewords, tributes, elegies, and art catalog essays. The collection is born out of Nelson’s art criticism. In her brief, restless preface, she explains that at the beginning of her career, poetry led her to art writing. Each invitation to contribute to an artist or exhibition catalog teaches “me more about how the act of bestowing attention serves as its own reward. And how such engagement attaches and reattaches me to curiosity, to others, to life, especially when my own spirits have dimmed.” Her efforts on Matthew Barney, Tala Madani, Sarah Lucas, and Kara Walker engage the art works intensely; thus the essays are thorny, knotted, sometimes dizzying reading.

Nelson knows that her attempts at explanation may distract us from looking at the art itself: “Probably, language does not make art happy. Language doesn’t always make me happy. But sometimes, you must explain. And not just because someone asked, or because we live in a culture of explanation, but because one wants to. Needs to. The language rises up, an upchuck. Words aren’t just what’s left; they’re what we have to offer.”

Since we only have words to offer each other, as we attempt to hold the cruelty of others at bay while forging freer lives together, Nelson also suggests that we ought to perhaps appreciate and even learn to dwell in irony, ambiguity, complexity, and contingency. Her formidable essays on Fred Moten, Alice Notley, and Ben Lerner are strong examples of this practice.

In her essay on Hervé Guibert, Nelson, considering that author’s influence on her own writing, names her “riotous, motley heritage,” which includes Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick Carolee Schneemann, Judith Butler, and everyone from “Paul Preciado to Claudia Rankine to Gloria Anzaldúa to Anne Carson to Hilton Als to . . . to James Baldwin to Roland Barthes to Audre Lorde,” among many others.

The members of Nelson’s canon are “characterized by ravenous intellectual appetite; a wry and unflinching devotion to chronicling corporality; a dedication to formal experiment, up to and including the detonation of genre; and a certain curiosity and fearlessness where others might expect (or project) shame.” They are what Ralph Waldo Emerson calls “liberating gods.”

In “On Freedom,” Nelson argues that freedom is neither a destination nor a thing to be attained or accomplished. In “Like Love,” Nelson tells us that Simone White’s poetry confronts the persistent dilemma of “trying to be in and with the impossible murk of ‘freedom as chimeric’ on the one hand, and ‘it is too much to ask, to give it up,’ on the other.” Instead of regarding this as a stifling impasse, Nelson suggests we follow White and meet this dilemma “with a questing spirit.” Throughout “Like Love,” Nelson is herself a poet of the question spirit.

That Viral Essay Wasn’t About Age Gaps. It Was About Marrying Rich.

But both tactics are flawed if you want to have any hope of becoming yourself..

Women are wisest, a viral essay in New York magazine’s the Cut argues , to maximize their most valuable cultural assets— youth and beauty—and marry older men when they’re still very young. Doing so, 27-year-old writer Grazie Sophia Christie writes, opens up a life of ease, and gets women off of a male-defined timeline that has our professional and reproductive lives crashing irreconcilably into each other. Sure, she says, there are concessions, like one’s freedom and entire independent identity. But those are small gives in comparison to a life in which a person has no adult responsibilities, including the responsibility to become oneself.

This is all framed as rational, perhaps even feminist advice, a way for women to quit playing by men’s rules and to reject exploitative capitalist demands—a choice the writer argues is the most obviously intelligent one. That other Harvard undergraduates did not busy themselves trying to attract wealthy or soon-to-be-wealthy men seems to flummox her (taking her “high breasts, most of my eggs, plausible deniability when it came to purity, a flush ponytail, a pep in my step that had yet to run out” to the Harvard Business School library, “I could not understand why my female classmates did not join me, given their intelligence”). But it’s nothing more than a recycling of some of the oldest advice around: For women to mold themselves around more-powerful men, to never grow into independent adults, and to find happiness in a state of perpetual pre-adolescence, submission, and dependence. These are odd choices for an aspiring writer (one wonders what, exactly, a girl who never wants to grow up and has no idea who she is beyond what a man has made her into could possibly have to write about). And it’s bad advice for most human beings, at least if what most human beings seek are meaningful and happy lives.

But this is not an essay about the benefits of younger women marrying older men. It is an essay about the benefits of younger women marrying rich men. Most of the purported upsides—a paid-for apartment, paid-for vacations, lives split between Miami and London—are less about her husband’s age than his wealth. Every 20-year-old in the country could decide to marry a thirtysomething and she wouldn’t suddenly be gifted an eternal vacation.

Which is part of what makes the framing of this as an age-gap essay both strange and revealing. The benefits the writer derives from her relationship come from her partner’s money. But the things she gives up are the result of both their profound financial inequality and her relative youth. Compared to her and her peers, she writes, her husband “struck me instead as so finished, formed.” By contrast, “At 20, I had felt daunted by the project of becoming my ideal self.” The idea of having to take responsibility for her own life was profoundly unappealing, as “adulthood seemed a series of exhausting obligations.” Tying herself to an older man gave her an out, a way to skip the work of becoming an adult by allowing a father-husband to mold her to his desires. “My husband isn’t my partner,” she writes. “He’s my mentor, my lover, and, only in certain contexts, my friend. I’ll never forget it, how he showed me around our first place like he was introducing me to myself: This is the wine you’ll drink, where you’ll keep your clothes, we vacation here, this is the other language we’ll speak, you’ll learn it, and I did.”

These, by the way, are the things she says are benefits of marrying older.

The downsides are many, including a basic inability to express a full range of human emotion (“I live in an apartment whose rent he pays and that constrains the freedom with which I can ever be angry with him”) and an understanding that she owes back, in some other form, what he materially provides (the most revealing line in the essay may be when she claims that “when someone says they feel unappreciated, what they really mean is you’re in debt to them”). It is clear that part of what she has paid in exchange for a paid-for life is a total lack of any sense of self, and a tacit agreement not to pursue one. “If he ever betrayed me and I had to move on, I would survive,” she writes, “but would find in my humor, preferences, the way I make coffee or the bed nothing that he did not teach, change, mold, recompose, stamp with his initials.”

Reading Christie’s essay, I thought of another one: Joan Didion’s on self-respect , in which Didion argues that “character—the willingness to accept responsibility for one’s own life—is the source from which self-respect springs.” If we lack self-respect, “we are peculiarly in thrall to everyone we see, curiously determined to live out—since our self-image is untenable—their false notions of us.” Self-respect may not make life effortless and easy. But it means that whenever “we eventually lie down alone in that notoriously un- comfortable bed, the one we make ourselves,” at least we can fall asleep.

It can feel catty to publicly criticize another woman’s romantic choices, and doing so inevitably opens one up to accusations of jealousy or pettiness. But the stories we tell about marriage, love, partnership, and gender matter, especially when they’re told in major culture-shaping magazines. And it’s equally as condescending to say that women’s choices are off-limits for critique, especially when those choices are shared as universal advice, and especially when they neatly dovetail with resurgent conservative efforts to make women’s lives smaller and less independent. “Marry rich” is, as labor economist Kathryn Anne Edwards put it in Bloomberg, essentially the Republican plan for mothers. The model of marriage as a hierarchy with a breadwinning man on top and a younger, dependent, submissive woman meeting his needs and those of their children is not exactly a fresh or groundbreaking ideal. It’s a model that kept women trapped and miserable for centuries.

It’s also one that profoundly stunted women’s intellectual and personal growth. In her essay for the Cut, Christie seems to believe that a life of ease will abet a life freed up for creative endeavors, and happiness. But there’s little evidence that having material abundance and little adversity actually makes people happy, let alone more creatively generativ e . Having one’s basic material needs met does seem to be a prerequisite for happiness. But a meaningful life requires some sense of self, an ability to look outward rather than inward, and the intellectual and experiential layers that come with facing hardship and surmounting it.

A good and happy life is not a life in which all is easy. A good and happy life (and here I am borrowing from centuries of philosophers and scholars) is one characterized by the pursuit of meaning and knowledge, by deep connections with and service to other people (and not just to your husband and children), and by the kind of rich self-knowledge and satisfaction that comes from owning one’s choices, taking responsibility for one’s life, and doing the difficult and endless work of growing into a fully-formed person—and then evolving again. Handing everything about one’s life over to an authority figure, from the big decisions to the minute details, may seem like a path to ease for those who cannot stomach the obligations and opportunities of their own freedom. It’s really an intellectual and emotional dead end.

And what kind of man seeks out a marriage like this, in which his only job is to provide, but very much is owed? What kind of man desires, as the writer cast herself, a raw lump of clay to be molded to simply fill in whatever cracks in his life needed filling? And if the transaction is money and guidance in exchange for youth, beauty, and pliability, what happens when the young, beautiful, and pliable party inevitably ages and perhaps feels her backbone begin to harden? What happens if she has children?

The thing about using youth and beauty as a currency is that those assets depreciate pretty rapidly. There is a nearly endless supply of young and beautiful women, with more added each year. There are smaller numbers of wealthy older men, and the pool winnows down even further if one presumes, as Christie does, that many of these men want to date and marry compliant twentysomethings. If youth and beauty are what you’re exchanging for a man’s resources, you’d better make sure there’s something else there—like the basic ability to provide for yourself, or at the very least a sense of self—to back that exchange up.

It is hard to be an adult woman; it’s hard to be an adult, period. And many women in our era of unfinished feminism no doubt find plenty to envy about a life in which they don’t have to work tirelessly to barely make ends meet, don’t have to manage the needs of both children and man-children, could simply be taken care of for once. This may also explain some of the social media fascination with Trad Wives and stay-at-home girlfriends (some of that fascination is also, I suspect, simply a sexual submission fetish , but that’s another column). Fantasies of leisure reflect a real need for it, and American women would be far better off—happier, freer—if time and resources were not so often so constrained, and doled out so inequitably.

But the way out is not actually found in submission, and certainly not in electing to be carried by a man who could choose to drop you at any time. That’s not a life of ease. It’s a life of perpetual insecurity, knowing your spouse believes your value is decreasing by the day while his—an actual dollar figure—rises. A life in which one simply allows another adult to do all the deciding for them is a stunted life, one of profound smallness—even if the vacations are nice.

Why China Offered Earthquake Aid to Taiwan—and Why Taiwan Quickly Rejected It

T aiwanese authorities have yet to estimate how much it will cost to recover from the damage caused by the massive, deadly earthquake that struck the island on Wednesday, which collapsed buildings , felled water towers , and caused landslides that damaged roads and other infrastructure. Repair costs for the last earthquake of such a scale— in 1999 and albeit much bigger—reached near $10 billion .

A quarter century ago, Taiwan rejected help from its estranged neighbor in China, and when an offer to help came from across the strait again this week, Taiwan speedily rebuffed it.

“It’s not real kindness because you are constantly threatened in conflict,” Lev Nachman, an assistant professor of political science at National Chengchi University in Taipei, tells TIME of China’s offer and Taiwan’s quickness to see through it.

“We express our gratitude to the Chinese side for their concern,” Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council said in a statement shortly after the Taiwan Affairs Office of mainland China’s State Council reacted to the disaster on Wednesday. “There is no need for the Chinese side to assist in disaster relief due to this earthquake.”

Earlier, Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, said : “Relevant parties in the mainland are highly concerned and express their sincere condolences to the Taiwan compatriots affected by the disaster. They will pay close attention to the disaster situation and follow-up situations, and are willing to provide disaster relief assistance.”

Chinese state media referred to the quake having taken place in “ China’s Taiwan ,” and by offering aid, says Ja Ian Chong, associate professor of political science at National University of Singapore, it “is trying to push again this line that it is doing something for what it deems to be for its own domestic purposes.”

Taiwan’s quick rejection likely stemmed, experts say, from lingering bitterness over how the 1999 earthquake was handled. At the time, Taiwanese authorities described Beijing’s attempted oversight of relief efforts as “ extremely inappropriate .” China also stood in the way of the U.N.’s ability to give quake-related aid in 1999, and it continues to exercise influence over international arenas to hold Taiwan back from recognition and full participation with other governments and organizations.

“Aid from China is always conditional,” Chong tells TIME, explaining the Taiwan government’s understandable resistance to letting China get involved in current recovery efforts. He also pointed to broader distrust of China among the Taiwanese public based on Beijing’s insistence, which has ramped up in recent years, that the island is part of the republic and that the two will soon be united, by force if necessary.

“There is a lot of skepticism towards the intent of [China], because of this military intimidation,” Chong says, pointing to the near-constant People’s Liberation Army flyovers and military vessels around the island , “because of its unwillingness to move away from the threat of using force to extend control over Taiwan.”

Taiwan recently reaffirmed its desire for independence when its people voted for four more years of leadership by the China-skeptical Democratic Progressive Party. William Lai , the president-elect who takes office in May, said as voters headed to the polls in January, “Our door will always be open to engagement with Beijing under the principles of equality and dignity,” while adding: “While aspiring for peace, we harbor no illusions.”

As for China, it likely expected Taiwan’s reaction, says Nachman. In making its offer that would almost certainly be rejected, China was “not really so much offering a kindness but setting Taiwan up to look bad, essentially … Then [China] can say, ‘Look, Taiwan rejects our kindness.’”

Ultimately, observers say the cross-strait back-and-forth over assistance is an unwelcome distraction. “Taiwan’s focus in the coming days must be on the welfare of its people,” Karishma Vaswani, a Bloomberg Opinion writer focused on politics in Asia, wrote in a recent column . “If China is genuine about efforts to help, then it should simply stay out of Taipei’s way.”

Taiwan’s response to China’s offer of help this week is notably different from its response to Japan’s similar offer. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida took to social media platform X on Wednesday to express condolences to the earthquake victims, adding that Japan “stands ready to provide necessary assistance to Taiwan, our maritime neighbor, in times of hardship”—to which Lai, responded in Japanese : “Your words warm our hearts and symbolize the strong bond between Taiwan and Japan. Let us continue to help each other and join hands to overcome these difficult times.”

Correction, April 4 The original version of this story misnamed Taiwan’s governing party. It is the Democratic Progressive Party, not the Democratic People’s Party.

There’s No Such Thing as an American Bible

A photo of an LED sign against a vivid sunset, displaying the word “GOD” atop an American flag background.

By Esau McCaulley

Contributing Opinion Writer

The presumptive Republican nominee for president of the United States, who weeks ago started selling shoes , is now peddling Bibles. During Holy Week.

What’s special about this Bible? So many things. For example, according to a promotional website, it’s the only Bible endorsed by Donald Trump. It’s also the only one endorsed by the country singer Lee Greenwood. Admittedly, the translation isn’t distinctive — it’s your standard King James Version — but the features are unique. This Bible includes the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence, the Pledge of Allegiance and part of the lyrics of Mr. Greenwood’s song “God Bless the USA.” Perhaps most striking, the cover of the Bible does not include a cross or any symbol of the Christian tradition; instead, it is emblazoned with the American flag.

While part of me wants to laugh at the absurdity of it — and marvel at the sheer audacity — I find the messaging unsettling and deeply wrong. This God Bless the USA Bible, as it’s officially named, focuses on God’s blessing of one particular people. That is both its danger and, no doubt for some, its appeal.

Whether this Bible is an example of Christian nationalism I will leave to others. It is at least an example of Christian syncretism, a linking of certain myths about American exceptionalism and the Christian faith. This is the American church’s consistent folly: thinking that we are the protagonists in a story that began long before us and whose main character is in fact the Almighty.

Holy Week is the most sacred portion of the Christian calendar, a time when the church recounts the central events of our faith’s narrative, climaxing in the death and resurrection of Jesus. That story, unlike the parochial God Bless the USA Bible, does not belong to any culture.

Holy Week is celebrated on every continent and in too many languages to number. Some of the immigrants Mr. Trump declared were “ poisoning the blood” of America will probably shout “Christ is risen!” this Easter. Many of them come from the largely Christian regions of Latin America and the Caribbean. They may have entered the country with Bibles in their native tongues nestled securely among their other belongings.

One of the beauties of the Christian faith is that it leaps over the lines dividing countries, leading the faithful to call fellow believers from very different cultures brothers and sisters. Most of the members of this international community consist of the poor living in Africa, Asia and Latin America. There are more Spanish-speaking Christians than English- speaking ones .

If there are central messages that emerge from the variety of services that take place during Holy Week, for many Christians they are the setting aside of power to serve, the supremacy of love, the offer of divine forgiveness and the vulnerability of a crucified God.

This is not the stuff of moneymaking schemes or American presidential campaigns.

It was Pontius Pilate , standing in as the representative of the Roman Empire, who sentenced Jesus to death. The Easter story reminds believers that empires are more than willing to sacrifice the innocent if it allows rulers to stay in power. The church sees Christ’s resurrection as liberating the believer from the power of sin. The story challenges imperial modes of thinking, supplanting the endless pursuit of power with the primacy of love and service.

Easter, using the language of St. Augustine, represents the victory of the City of God over the City of Man. It declares the limits of the moral reasoning of nation-states and has fortified Christians who’ve resisted evil regimes such as fascists in South America, Nazis in Germany, apartheid in South Africa and segregation in the United States.

For any politician to suppose that a nation’s founding documents and a country music song can stand side by side with biblical texts fails at a theological and a moral level. I can’t imagine people in other countries going for anything like it. It is hard to picture a modern “God Bless England” Bible with elements of British common law appended to Christianity’s most sacred texts.

I am glad for the freedoms that we share as Americans. But the idea of a Bible explicitly made for one nation displays a misunderstanding of the story the Bible attempts to tell. The Christian narrative culminates in the creation of the Kingdom (and family) of God, a transnational community united by faith and mutual love.

Roman Catholics , Anglicans and Orthodox Christians, who together claim around 1.5 billion members, describe the Bible as a final authority in matters of faith. Evangelicals, who have overwhelmingly supported Mr. Trump over the course of three election cycles, are known for their focus on Scripture, too. None of these traditions cite or refer to any American political documents in their doctrinal statements — and for good reason.

This Bible may be unique in its form, but the agenda it pursues has recurred throughout history. Christianity is often either co-opted or suppressed; it is rarely given the space to be itself. African American Christians have long struggled to disentangle biblical texts from their misuse in the United States. There is a reason that the abolitionist Frederick Douglass said that between the Christianity of this land (America) and the Christianity of Christ, he recognized the “widest possible difference.”

And while Christianity was used to give theological cover to North American race-based chattel slavery, it was violently attacked in places like El Salvador and Uganda, when leaders including the archbishops Oscar Romero and Janani Luwum spoke out against political corruption.

The work of the church is to remain constantly vigilant to maintain its independence and the credibility of its witness. In the case of this particular Bible, discerning what is happening is not difficult. Christians are being played. Rather than being an appropriate time to debut a patriotic Bible, Easter season is an opportune moment for the church to recover the testimony of the supremacy of the cross over any flag, especially one on the cover of a Bible.

Safe words: essay winner points to responsibility of all to country.

kindness words in essay

RED BLUFF – We are all responsible for keeping the United States safe, according to Olivia Owens, an eighth-grader at Berrendos Middle School.

Owens was the first-place winner of the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 167 Essay Contest this year.

The prompt for the contest was titled “Who is responsible to keep our country safe?”

The message contained in the essay is centered on the idea that every American citizen holds a responsibility to create safety for the betterment of the country.

In part, she wrote, “The United States citizens are responsible for our country and its doings; therefore keeping us under control and safe from one another is important when electing a responsible government. In other words, without a functioning society, we cannot have a functioning government. If we do not have a good government, bad decisions can be made for our country by our country representatives, which could lead to the fallout of the United States. All in all, whether you are a member of the military, a representative of our country, or just a regular citizen, your role in keeping the United States safe is important. In order to keep our country safe, a stable society is the basis of a responsible government and a powerful military.”

American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 167 Unit President Daleen Baker and Lois Barnes, the essay co-chairperson, presented the awards to the winners of the essay contest. In second place was Xander Gozzo, and in third place Reese Whitaker.

American Legion Unit 167 is thankful to the teachers and faculty of Berrendos Middle School for their cooperation and assistance and to Lariat Bowl, Tehama District Fair, Domino’s Pizza, and Round Table Pizza for donating prizes for the essay contest winners.

Former President Donald Trump is demanding a new judge just days before his hush-money criminal case is set to go to trial, rehashing longstanding grievances with the current judge in a long-shot, eleventh-hour bid to disrupt and delay the case. Trump’s lawyers urged Manhattan Judge Juan M. Merchan to step aside from the case, alleging a conflict of interest and bias because his daughter is a Democratic political consultant. The judge rejected a similar request last August. In court papers made public Friday, Trump’s lawyers said it is improper for Merchan “to preside over these proceedings while Ms. Merchan benefits, financially and reputationally, from the manner in which this case is interfering” with Trump’s presidential campaign.
