Journalism Capstone Project

"The exciting thing about working with capstone students is to watch their ideas develop and flow. Their projects are the culmination of all the reporting and writing skills they have learned from their courses. It's fun to see this knowledge evolve into publishable stories!" — June Carolyn Erlick, ALM in Journalism Capstone Advisor

Journalism capstones are independent projects focused on a global, national, local or human interest topic that has become compelling for you during your course of study. The project provides an opportunity to showcase your journalism skills in a portfolio format that can be presented to current or future employers.

Although you register for the JOUR 599 Journalism Capstone in fall, spring, or summer as if it were a course, the topic, story outlines, and research approach must be approved months in advance, ordinarily the semester before capstone registration.

While every effort is made to support your capstone interest, guidance is not available for all possible projects. Therefore, revisions or a change of capstone topic may be necessary before it is approved. As in all traditional journalism, projects must take a fair and balanced view by bringing in differing points of view. Projects should not be one-sided or take an advocacy stance.

The purpose of the journalism capstone is to apply the knowledge and skills you obtained in the program to complete a significant journalism project under the direction of a professional in the field. Specifically, it entails a portfolio of several related stories that are completed over the course of one semester. The related stories come together as an in-depth investigation of a single topic. You'll emerge from the capstone with a portfolio of new work suitable for publishing, posting, or broadcasting.

Timeline and Support

The semester prior to capstone registration, you work one-on-one with your capstone advisor, June Erlick, on your topic ideas and the development of your capstone proposal (research plan). See sidebar Crafting the Proposal for specific research plan requirements and Timeline for mandatory proposal submission deadlines.

Then, when you are registered in the capstone, you work independently with the guidance of an assigned capstone director to complete the project within a one-semester timeframe. Capstone directors are journalism instructors or professionals in the field who have expertise in the topic area.

You can register for the capstone after you have completed 36 credits. The capstone can be, and usually is, completed at a distance.

Master of Arts in Journalism

Guidelines for Hofstra MA Journalism Capstone Projects

IMPORTANT NOTE: All other degree requirements must be completed or in progress when students begin the Capstone. The Hofstra graduate journalism capstone should be done during a student’s final semester in the program.

OBJECTIVE The Capstone gives students one-on-one faculty guidance to conceptualize, report, write and produce a story that is more substantial than anything they have done before. Although comparable to a master’s thesis in importance, the critical difference is that this is a journalism project to produce a story that should be a multimedia, in-depth report. It should demonstrate the culmination of a student’s learning from the curriculum, incorporating skills and knowledge from a variety of classes. The Capstone story should not focus on subjects related to the study of journalism, which might be the subject of a master’s thesis. Instead, it should show the student’s ability to develop sources from the community at large and produce professional-quality multimedia elements to expand the effectiveness of the story.

STEP 1 - PITCH AND PROPOSAL

  • Students preparing to take the Capstone course must submit a written proposal of their project to the faculty advisor of their choice during the previous semester. Copies of the final proposal must also go to both the Graduate Director and the Department Chair for approval prior to enrollment.
  • This proposal should outline the scope and direction of the project, as well as the kinds of sources and resources that will be used to explore the issue. The proposal may be described as an in-depth “pitch” to an editor, and should explain clearly why a particular story idea is newsworthy and how the student intends to report it.
  • Please be sure to detail how the story will be told and specifically how multimedia will be used, as well as any other notes and info about platforms and story placement.

STEP 2 - DETAILS OF THE PROJECT

  • The story should open with a hard-news, narrative or anecdotal lead and include a minimum of 10 sources whom the student has interviewed directly.
  • At least 5-6 sources must be quoted within the narrative stories and the others can be quotes in multimedia or simply referred to in notes and transcripts.
  • The story must be the original work of the student. If a student cites the work of another journalist or an academic, he/she/they must either quote or substantially paraphrase the source. In either case, credit must be given. If another journalist's story is cited, a hyperlink should be included. This same note applies for graphics, video, audio or any content. Citing the work of other journalists or academics should be limited, though. The primary basis for the capstone story should be in-person interviews.
  • If students wish, they can produce one Zoom interview of not more than 8 minutes in length to help fulfill the video requirement. The interview should include a proper lead-in and sign-off, as well as use lower-thirds when appropriate.
  • A student may produce a longer-form, 15- to 20-minute documentary-style report, but such a project should be completed in close consultation with his/her/their capstone adviser.
  • Alternatively, rather than a video project, students could produce a 15- to 20-minute podcast that includes a minimum of three to four quoted sources.
  • The video or podcast element should not repeat information from the written piece, but rather work in tandem with it to broaden the overall story. Sources, though, can be the same.
  • C. Students must produce a minimum of two graphic elements using tools such as Google Trends, Google Flourish, Canva or other graphics programs. The graphic elements should highlight important data within the story.
  • D. Within their stories, students must include a minimum of five hyperlinks to other reliable websites, in particular government and non-profit websites.
  • E. Students must embed a minimum of two reliable social media posts within their stories. Posts should be from accounts other than a student's social media channels.
  • F. About: Please add an “about” page explaining yourself as a journalist.

STEP 3 - LOGISTICS / PAPERWORK

  • Once approved by the advisor, graduate director and journalism chair, the department will create a CRN for students to register
  • Note: Capstone registration cannot be done online without prior approval and overrides

STEP 4 - PREP, DRAFTS, EDITS, FEEDBACK

  • Editorial feedback from the faculty advisor and faculty-student interaction is significantly greater than it is with Independent Study courses
  • Students are required to do several written revisions of stories, based on editorial feedback, throughout the course
  • The final project must be deemed a publishable piece of journalism by the faculty advisor, and students must seek out legitimate news outlets where they can publish their work, especially the Long Island Advocate
  • Students will be asked to discuss concrete efforts made to publish (such as in-person, phone and email contact with specific editors)
  • Selected final projects will also be displayed on the Hofstra website and other platforms, and be accessible to current and future students
  • Faculty advisors and students must submit online links directly to the graduate director for posting when completed
  • Final work: Due one week before final committee presentation
  • Final committee presentation: Last week of class for the presentation
  • The Graduate Director will notify registered Capstone students each semester of the deadline. If a link is not received by the announced deadline, students will not be allowed to defend the project that semester and will need to wait until the following fall or spring semester to defend their project and graduate. Students are not permitted to change anything on their sites after the deadline.
  • Any changes made after the fact will affect the committee’s vote, and may result in a Fail for the course.
  • Pass with Honors
  • Pass with Minor Revision
  • Pass with Revision
  • Pass with Significant Revision

After the defense, the student will have one week to revise the project in order to arrive at a Pass for the class. Students who are enrolled in JRNL 299 but do not finish within one semester, will be required to register and pay for an additional one credit course, JRNL 300 Thesis Research, in order to complete the course requirements and graduate. JRNL 300 may be repeated one time only.

Once Capstone projects are passed, the content will be handed off for display and publishing on the Long Island Advocate website

While the capstone committee determines whether or not a project will pass or fail, the faculty advisor determines the student’s grade for the course, which usually takes into account the student’s ability to meet deadlines and follow editorial direction among other criteria. Both the faculty grade and committee’s pass are required for the student to be able to graduate. Below are some general guidelines for faculty-student interaction in a capstone course:

  • Email correspondence at least weekly
  • Students should conduct approximately 10 interviews (with transcripts). Faculty member should give written and/or verbal feedback on all. The number of interviews may vary by faculty member
  • Students should submit at least two drafts of their story, with detailed written feedback from faculty advisor
  • Faculty members will supervise both print and multimedia components of the project (pictures, video, audio, blog, Website creation, charts, graphs)
  • Students should have several meetings during the semester

The following are elements that capstone advisors will want to see:

  • initial pitch
  • background research/news clips
  • source list
  • requests for interviews
  • Transcripts
  • rough drafts (multiple)
  • completed digital site with multimedia

During the presentation

  • Explain the project, why you chose it
  • Explain successes, issues you encountered
  • Review each part of the project; all multimedia elements, sources
  • Discusses project with students on the video call - please keep in mind any feedback is direct, candid and honest
  • Decides pass with honors, pass, pass with minor revisions, pass with major revisions, fail
  • If we ask for revisions, students have one week to make the changes, which you can send on your site via email. The committee looks at the changes to decide on whether students fulfill the requirements.
  • Faculty members are allowed to attend the presentation to the capstone committee, but they will not be permitted to speak at any point, so as to not influence the outcome of the committee’s ruling.

Rochester students showcase how digital media can help address real-world problems.

Each year, seniors majoring in digital media studies at the University of Rochester spend their final semester working in teams to complete capstone projects. The projects demonstrate their newly aquired knowledge of media history, theory, design, and technology in a digital media project that addresses real-world problems or needs.

The pandemic posed an additional hurdle this year, requiring students to find new ways to engage and work with each other virtually, and in some cases, to collaborate across time zones.

“Organizing six people in different locations has been a challenge for us,” says Sofia Hennessey, part of a team that created a digital destination for students looking for basic technical instruction.

“Our students’ ability to continue to create meaningful work while coping with a global pandemic and amid our country’s reckoning with racism speaks to their sense of community,” says Stephanie Ashenfelder , interim director of the Undergraduate Program in Digital Media Studies .

And they are a successful group. “These graduates already have big plans, and many are headed to graduate school in diverse programs all over the world, including Amsterdam, Southern California, and New York City,” she adds.

The projects are wide ranging, as a sampling of this year’s capstones shows.

Sharing the digital toolbox

Project title: MEDIA

Team members: Alex Chase, Jennifer Ngene, Dominique Dorvil, Kun Fang, Sofia Hennessey, Henry Vargas

The capstone was born out of the group’s shared experience—a sense that they could benefit from more technical instruction that was not necessarily included as part of the major. Their project supplements the digital media studies major with new opportunities in technical instruction and offers a setting that allows student creatives to work on their portfolios in preparation for entering the job market.

  • Visit the MEDIA project website , where team members share their process and what they learned along the way, from ideation to iteration to launch.

Helping a nonprofit on its digital brand

Project title: Cracker Box Palace

Team members: Fiona Chen, Carolina Lion He, Harry Ma, Yujie Zhous

The team worked with an existing community partner, Cracker Box Palace , a farm and animal rescue organization in Alton, New York. The nonprofit had a list of items they wanted the students to tackle, from building an app to creating a new website.

“Their problem was that they had a lot of problems,” says Carolina Lion He ’21. “It’s a challenging kind of prompt. It’s very open-ended but very scoped and perfectly made for a digital media capstone.”

The team worked with the nonprofit’s board, learning about the group’s need to build a brand identity, through regular online communications.

  • Check out the Cracker Box Palace project site , where the team members share how they approached this open-ended project and to see the package of identity-building assets they created.

Helping others sing out loud—in an unfamiliar language

Project title: Just Sing Out Team members: Juliet Ding, Jingxuan Fang, Noah Honickman, Lingling Li, Keyuan Qin

“Language barriers have become the largest impediment for people to sing a foreign language song,” the team notes on its project site. But that impediment shouldn’t prevent friends from sharing an interest in or appreciation of such songs.

The team offers a platform for anyone who loves a song in an unfamiliar language and really wants to sing it out. The platform, currently focusing on East Asian pop songs, provides phonetic versions of the lyrics. The team members built and constructed a website with front-end and back-end applications, in addition to producing an animated promotional video for the site.

The project “encourages people to not only get their transliteration lyrics but to upload their lyrics, so there is an exchange between a fan and the fan group,” says Lingling Li.

Guide to The Master’s in Communication Capstone Project

journalism capstone project ideas

Types of Capstone Projects

Independent capstone projects, capstone course, group capstone projects, portfolio and reflection projects, internship capstone.

Many master’s in communication programs that focus on building students’ practical skills and leadership capabilities within communication sectors such as public relations, advertising and marketing, corporate and organizational communication, and even political communication and campaigning require a capstone project as students’ culminating experience. Unlike traditional theses, which are common for academic and research-oriented master’s in communication programs and have a formal, multi-chapter structure, capstone projects vary widely across programs and often afford students a great deal of flexibility to be creative in their research and final deliverable.

There is substantial variance between how master’s in communication programs design their applied capstone project option. For some programs, the capstone is an independent research-based or industry-centric endeavor that students complete individually while under the guidance of a committee (similar to how students complete a traditional thesis). Other programs, in contrast, may have a dedicated capstone project course wherein students meet project benchmarks that they discuss in class, and also benefit from their instructor’s guidance and peer feedback. Additionally, there are group project capstone experiences where students are divided into teams and tackle one or a variety of projects that aim to integrate all the concepts and skills that they have learned during their enrollment in the program.

Added to this diversity amongst program capstone experiences is the diversity of students’ interests, their professional and academic backgrounds, and whether they are working full-time or part-time while pursuing their graduate degree. Students who are working and want to integrate what they have learned in their program directly into their workplace might complete their capstone project with their current employer. On the other hand, students who have minimal professional experience or who wish to change industries might find an organization or complete a project based off of their own interests, with the intention of featuring their capstone project as a centerpiece of their portfolio when applying for jobs.

This Guide to the Capstone Project is designed to help current and prospective students of master’s in communication programs understand the depth and breadth of possibilities for their capstone project. It features detailed descriptions of common types of capstone project options, as well as insights from faculty members and directors of master’s in communication programs nationwide who were interviewed as part of our Faculty Interview Series .

Despite the variance in capstone project options described above, there are several major categories in terms of general types of projects that students can undertake. From independent projects to professional portfolios and client-centric group projects, there are choices that suit every student’s interests and goals.

The independent project, one of the most common capstone experience options, grants students significant autonomy in crafting their final deliverable. The student works with his or her advisor and committee to determine a project topic that is tailored to the student’s academic interests and career goals. These independent projects can be created specifically for a real industry client, or can be designed around a hypothetical client in some cases. Examples of independent projects include an advertising campaign for an agency, an organizational communication plan for a corporation, or a comprehensive fundraising awareness strategy for a non-profit organization. Students may also have the option to complete an artistic or creative final project, such as writing a play, filming a documentary, or choreographing a dance.

The process to successfully completing the independent capstone project is quite similar to that of the traditional thesis , in that students select a committee of faculty whose research expertise aligns with the topic of their project. Students then conduct their research and complete their final deliverable with close guidance and feedback from their faculty advisor and committee.

Hye-ryeon Lee, Ph.D. the Director of Graduate Studies for the Department of Communicology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, explained her program’s applied capstone project experience in an interview. “The applied project is very flexible in terms of what [students] can do. […] For example, a student is currently in the process of writing a book as her applied project. Another student developed a volunteer training program for the Make a Wish Foundation. This student talked to the administrators, staff and volunteers of the Foundation to develop a thorough understanding about their operation. She then designed and delivered a training program for new volunteers for the Foundation.”

While independent projects are more flexible in terms of their structure and topic, relative to the master’s thesis, they still require a substantial amount of research and are just as rigorous as theses. Students completing a capstone project use the same research methodologies as those who complete a thesis, but instead of applying their findings to conclusions that contribute to the scholarly literature, they use their insights to directly impact an organization or to design a final product that that is more applied or creative in nature.

Michael B. Goodman, Ph.D., Director the Master of Arts in Corporate Communication at The City University of New York’s Baruch College, explained how this program’s applied project uses academically rigorous communication theories and research methodologies. “Similar to the thesis, students are expected to employ and integrate the theories, communication management practices, and methods that they learn in the program to their research and final product. Students who choose this option are also required to present their results at a professional colloquium,” he noted.

The flexibility of the capstone project allows students to bring in topics from their professional or personal lives. Porter Shreve, Director of Administration for the University of San Francisco’s Master of Arts in Professional Communication, explained how many students in the program use the capstone as a way to examine and address sociocultural issues. “Since we are located in San Francisco near the heart of Silicon Valley, tech development and its reshaping of human communication are very much on our students’ minds,” he said, “I had one student who completed a video-based capstone about women muralists in San Francisco’s Mission District and their struggles with gender discrimination. […] We had [another] student who worked at a successful artificial intelligence startup, and he decided to tie his capstone to projects he had undertaken in the AI field.”

Porter Shreve also emphasized the important role that communication theory and research methodologies play in the capstone project, regardless of selected topic or deliverable. “While students can bring the applied into their capstone projects, their work typically utilizes academic research methodologies such as quantitative and qualitative data gathering and analysis,” he said.

Oftentimes, students use the independent project as an opportunity to create a product that will feature prominently in their portfolio once they graduate. Coy Callison, Ph.D., Associate Dean of Graduate Studies for the College of Media and Communication at Texas Tech University (TTU), explained how one of the students of TTU’s Master of Arts in Mass Communication created a project that directly contributed to her securing a public relations management position. “[Our student] developed a crisis communication campaign for one of the local hospitals here in Lubbock, and she dealt directly with how well people at the hospital understood emergency planning,” he recalled, “[S]he put together an extensive campaign that involved all of the constituents from the staff to the nurses, doctors, and vendors. She surveyed all of these teams to learn how they would prefer to receive this information […and] subsequently put together a comprehensive plan that catered to each team, and the hospital was very happy with it.”

After graduating, this student approached a major hospital in Honolulu with her crisis communication plan, which impressed them so much that they created a position for her, and she became the Crisis Preparedness Director. As this example illustrates, the independent project can be a very helpful stepping stone into a new career or promotion at one’s current job.

While some programs have a capstone project option that involves students working largely independently under the guidance of one or more faculty advisors, other programs have students complete their capstone project while enrolled in a capstone course that provides structure, guidance, and feedback. This is relatively common among online master’s in communication programs, and can be particularly advantageous for students who benefit from weekly meetings that hold them accountable for meeting incremental project deadlines. Capstone courses also provide the benefit of peer discussions and feedback in a forum-like setting. Unlike the independent capstone project, which is highly individualized and can be creative or artistic, projects that are completed as part of a capstone course are often more practical and client-focused in nature.

Richard Holberg, Adjunct Instructor and Team Lead for Southern New Hampshire University’s Online Master of Arts in Communication Program, explained how the capstone course that is part of this program provides students with helpful structure and deadlines. “The first week of the course is when students identify what they want that client and campaign to be. As facilitator of the course, it is my job to make sure that their campaign meets the parameters for the program and has a scope that is manageable within the span of the capstone course,” he said, “We also structure in three milestones that students must meet during their time in the course. First students must identify the client and the type of campaign they want to do, and I review all of their proposals. The second milestone requires them to identify what the focus of their campaign is. What’s the communication need or problem that they are trying to solve?”

Capstone courses vary in how they manage the client-student relationship. Some programs require all the students in a capstone course to work on a single project for one client that agrees to partner with the program. Other programs connect students with multiple clients for individualized or small group capstone projects. Still other programs ask students to find their own client but provide guidance and support during the client search process during class sessions and individual mentoring.

Dionne C. Clemons, Ph.D., former Director of the Master of Arts in Strategic Communication and Public Relations at Trinity Washington University, explained how the capstone course for this program connects students with a wealth of regional clients and partners. “We develop relationships with clients and assign students a client that has strategic communication/PR needs that match what we expect students to demonstrate in their final project,” she explained. Dr. Clemons also noted that one of the advantages of Trinity University’s capstone course is that students connect with a wide variety of clients who can serve as useful professional contacts for students. “Most clients that we align with are partners with Trinity, and they often represent the economy here in DC, meaning that they are management consulting, nonprofit, or government entities,” she added.

Group projects have the advantage of enabling students to take on a project of larger scope than would be possible if they were working individually. Whether completed under the guidance of a faculty advisor or as part of a larger capstone course, group projects also give students the opportunity to demonstrate and hone their teamwork skills while working on an intensive project that mimics the work they will complete in their future jobs. Unlike individual capstone projects which can be industry-focused or creative, and may or may not be client-centric, group capstone projects tend to revolve around an existing client need, such as a marketing campaign for an apparel company, an advocacy initiative for a non-profit organization, or an organizational communication revamp for a corporation.

Janet Steele, Ph.D., who is the Director of George Washington University’s Master of Arts in Global Communication program, explained how this program’s capstone experience is designed to be a team effort. “The capstone is a four-credit group project that students complete over the course of a year. The capstone is handled through the Elliott School of International Affairs,” she said, “At the end of their first year, students meet with a capstone advisor, and decide on their work group. The groups usually consist of three to four students, and together they work with real-world clients on an agreed-upon project. At the end of the program, the group is required to present their project to faculty, and to show us the work they did for their client.”

For some programs, the capstone group project is an opportunity for students to flex their leadership and project management abilities. Arabella Pollack, MBA, who is the Deputy Academic Director of the Master’s in Strategic Communication Programs at Columbia University, explained how Columbia University’s program emphasizes team projects from the beginning in order to prepare students for collaborative work on their capstone.

“Throughout all our other courses there is a lot of project work, lots of teamwork focusing on real-life scenarios, whether it is case studies or hypothetical situations from their current place of employment or other organizations. Students are constantly thinking about how they put the concepts they learn into practice,” she said, “When it comes to the Capstone we take it to another level. We work with real organizations that have a communication challenge they’re tackling. And students work in small teams to address this problem through guided independent study over the course of a semester. This includes conducting their own primary and secondary research. They conduct focus groups, quantitative and fully representative surveys, and other assessments and deep dives into data. They’re constantly working with the sponsor in an almost consulting relationship (though sponsors do not pay for students’ work). At the end of the semester, students present their findings and recommendations to the sponsor.”

Just as some master’s in communication programs require students to take a capstone course for their individual capstone project, some programs that have a group capstone project requirement also incorporate the capstone as part of a larger guided capstone course. As noted above, this is quite common for online master’s in communication programs.

Michael Weigold, Ph.D., who is the Director of Distance Education at the University of Florida’s College of Journalism and Communications, explained how the University’s Online Master of Arts in Mass Communication culminates in a capstone class where students are assigned groups and tackle a team project in largely the same way they would do so in an industry setting. “All of the Capstone projects are completed through group work, and this is by design, because all the members of our advisory council have reiterated the importance of people who know how to work optimally in teams,” he said, “During their work on their project, students have the mentorship of the Capstone course instructor.”

Some industry-focused master’s in communication programs require students to complete a portfolio that represents the depth and breadth of their professional skills, experience, and interests. This capstone requirement typically involves students reviewing their work over the course of their enrollment in the program, and selecting assignments from past classes that are representative of the strengths they would like to showcase to potential employers. As a highly industry-focused and functional capstone project, portfolios are typically required to be in online or e-portfolio form (such as a website) for maximum visibility. In addition, most programs with a portfolio capstone also require students to write a reflective essay that synthesizes the concepts, skills, and issues explored during their classes.

Programs tend to vary in terms of their precise parameters for the portfolio. While some programs may be flexible as to what students decide to include, others may have more established requirements to ensure adequate diversity within each student’s portfolio. Sunny Stalter-Pace, Ph.D., the Director of Graduate Studies for Auburn University’s English Department, explained the capstone portfolio requirement for Auburn University’s Master of Technical and Professional Communication. “The portfolio requirements are as follows: a portfolio website of the student’s own design, and which follows best practices for coding, writing, editing, and professional communication ethics; a 2000-word memo that elaborates on the major technical and professional communication issues that the student has discerned based off of his or her coursework, and which makes suggestions as to how to address these issues; five exemplary pieces of print or online content that the student has completed during his or her tenure in the program, accompanied by a 500-word analysis for each of these pieces of content; and an edited resume or curriculum vitae,” she said.

Texas Tech University’s Master of Arts in Technical Communication, on the other hand, has slightly different portfolio requirements. Craig Baehr, Ph.D., Director of this graduate program, outlined the portfolio’s parameters. “The Master of Arts in Technical Communication portfolio is comprised of two key components: learning artifacts and a reflective essay,” he explained, “Students must include three to six artifacts in their portfolio, one of which must be an academic or research paper, while another must be a practical project in technical communication. […] Examples of artifacts students might include in their portfolio include an analytical report or a feasibility study they wrote for a technical reports class, a web-based training module that they developed for the instructional design course, or a visual infographic they developed for the document design or information visualization course.”

The portfolio is an opportunity for students to not only showcase their skills, but to also benefit from mentorship and feedback from their instructors. Frederica Fornaciari, Ph.D., who is the Academic Program Director for the Master of Arts in Strategic Communications at National University, explained how this program’s capstone option is, in many ways, a career workshop course. “During the Capstone Project students reflect upon their chosen career path, analyze the market in their field of choice, and draw the connections between their own learning experience at National University and the skills necessary to successfully enter their career of choice,” she said, “[Students] develop a market analysis for their field of choice, looking at possible job openings, exploring job descriptions, and collecting valuable information about their desired job’s outlook from sources such as the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Then, students complete a reflective journal to reflect upon their learning experience at National University, and start drawing connections between their acquired toolkits and current market needs.”

Internship capstone options are somewhat less common than other types of capstone experiences, due to the fact that many industry-oriented master’s in communication programs have students who are already working either full-time or part-time while completing their degree. However, for students who have the weekly availability to complete an internship, this capstone experience option can be very helpful by immersing students in the work settings that interest them and connecting them with potential employers well before they graduate. Examples of graduate internships in communication include working for a local newspaper outlet, interning in the public relations department of a corporation, or working at a marketing agency.

Nadia Kaneva, Ph.D., who is the Director of the Master of Arts in Media and Public Communication Program at the University of Denver, described this program’s internship option as particularly advantageous for students interested in entering industry. “We believe that research and practice must go hand in hand as they work to address real-world problems,” she said, “[Based] on their own goals and interests, students can choose between completing a professional internship, a master’s thesis, or a substantial research paper as a capstone experience. […] Typically, students who wish to pursue a professional career opt for an internship. Our internship program is highly regarded by employers and we have seen many cases where an internship turns into a job offer upon graduation.”

Master’s in communication programs that offer an internship option for the culminating experience may connect students with potential internship sites and supervisors, or require students to identify an internship site on their own. The internship capstone option is often accompanied by an additional requirement that prompts students to reflect on the relevance of their internship work to their master’s program and future career. “At the end of their internships, students submit a paper or a professional portfolio, and complete an exit interview with the department’s Internship Director,” noted Dr. Kaneva.

Due to the intensive work it requires and its inherent depth and breadth, the master’s in communication capstone project may seem intimidating to many students. However, it is in fact a unique opportunity for students to build a robust bridge between where they are and where they want to be professionally, all within a safe and mentorship-centric environment. The capstone project is designed to give students the resources to build a professional-quality product that is tailored to their interests and goals.

Journalism Capstone Projects

This fall, seven journalism students completed their Multi-Platform Capstone project. The class is a student’s final project, in which they demonstrate their ability to bring together multimedia journalistic skills and produce a significant journalistic project or product.

Students must show a firm understanding of writing, reporting, visual storytelling, research, analysis, investigative techniques and multi-platform delivery. Most students take JOUR 40983 (which is required of all journalism majors) during their final semester at TCU, though some choose to take it a semester early.

Benefits of the project model capstone: Key experience themes for journalism students

  • Kathryn Shine Curtin University, Perth

Capstone units are culminating experiences typically offered in the final semester of a tertiary degree. Capstones are common across higher education, and are increasingly being offered in university journalism programs. However, there is no consensus about the most effective capstone for journalism. At least three models have been identified: the project, the newsroom simulation and the internship. While traditionally popular, the newsroom simulation and internship models have certain limitations, some of which have become more pronounced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Journalism educators see merit in the project model but it is not widely used. To date, there has been a lack of research about how journalism students respond to the various capstone options. The study presented here makes a contribution to this field by describing graduating students’ feedback about a new project model capstone unit offered through an Australian journalism undergraduate program. It describes some of the key themes to emerge from survey responses from three cohorts of graduating students. The project experience was found to enhance both tradecraft and transferable ‘life skills’, and helped many students feel more prepared to enter the workforce. The project shows significant promise as a valid alternative capstone experience for journalism students.

Professional Media Capstones

Explore this Section

The Professional Media Capstone series provides students with opportunities to build their resume while helping their community. Capstone courses ask students to put theory into practice—to raise and consider questions of structural inequalities and enduring struggles for human rights, freedom, and power as a part of professional media and communication projects. You will work together with your peers across courses and majors to explore a common theme, listen deeply to the concerns of those within the community, and address important challenges through original research and client-ready deliverables.

In the 2022–23 academic year, the series will follow a climate change theme, and we’ll be partnering with Rocky Mountain PBS and local nonprofit clients. A series of four capstone courses will work together as an “agency” to conduct research, pitch newsworthy stories and documentaries, develop a strategic communication plan, and produce videos to meet our clients’ needs. Each course builds on the annual theme, while students build on the work of their peers in previous courses to aid in media pitching and creating deliverables.

Work with classmates, professors, and the Denver community to build a portfolio of professional work.

Capstone Courses

Media studies, media studies research (fall).

Engage in real-world research on media related to the yearly theme, peer reviews, and conference-style presentations, setting the foundation for climate change projects across the department

As the informational foundation for the Department’s capstone series, this Media Studies Research course provides you the opportunity to collect data, formulate opinions, and produce writing and research to be used by your colleagues as part of a larger “agency” effort. You will plan, develop and conduct small-scale studies using diverse research methods, such as interviewing, textual analysis, ethnography and participant observation, and historical research. The final project provides real-world experience working in teams to generate original research, engage in peer reviews, and present your findings in a conference-style panel session.

Journalism Studies

Advanced multimedia journalism with pbs partnership (winter).

Produce mini-documentaries and written work that amplifies the voices of underserved communities of Colorado, and pitch your ideas to RMPBS Colorado Voices

Advanced Multimedia Journalism gives you the opportunity to research, pitch and develop newsworthy multimedia projects for Rocky Mountain PBS. Underserved communities of Colorado, including rural, BIPOC, LGBTQ+, people with disabilities, and religious communities will be the subject of our attention, and the content of your projects will be designed to amplify their voices to both online and television audiences. The course will culminate in the production of several short mini-documentaries and written pieces that will be submitted for consideration by the producers of the RMPBS program, Colorado Voices , and the PBS Video app.

Strategic Communication

Strategic communication seminar (spring).

Develop a strategic communication plan complete with analysis and recommendations on strategy, audiences, and marketing materials specific to the needs of a local nonprofit client

The Strategic Communications Seminar allows you to gain professional experience working together as an “agency” to develop a communication campaign plan for a local nonprofit client. From audit and analysis, to targeted audiences and marketing materials, each team will create a complete communication plan and formally present their recommendations to a real client. Each individual will build their career portfolio with actual work examples from this live-project course. Past clients have included Denver Center for the Performing Arts, The Women’s Bean Project, Slow Food Denver, and Metro Denver Nature Alliance.

Film Studies & Production

Creating films for clients (spring).

Work with a local nonprofit client to strategize, plan, and develop video using original research and journalistic storytelling tailored to meet their needs

As part of a larger “agency” effort, you will work with a local nonprofit client to develop a video specific to the client’s needs utilizing original research, journalistic storytelling, and/or strategic communication recommendations provided by your colleagues within the Department. You will gain hands-on experience in strategy and planning, with opportunities to specialize in writing, editing, directing, and producing. Throughout the course, you will identify and critique forms of creative action, strategies, and theories leveraged for social change while developing heightened sensitivity to representational issues related to communities that are marginalized and minoritized.

Journalism Students Use Capstone Course to Showcase Cultural Exchange, From Food to TikTok

Journalism capstone course

These are just a few of the stories about intersecting cultures that students in the School of Communication and Journalism told for their senior capstone projects. Other students chose to use the semester-long reporting project to highlight inequities in education, covering disparities in English Language Learning programs in Rockland County, NY, and imposter syndrome in first-generation college students.

“We’ve all been taking classes together for a long time and we’re a very diverse group,” said Katherine Heredia, a senior from Spanish Harlem. “I think we gathered our interest in each other’s cultures organically. We’ve gained a responsibility to spread what we’ve learned, and to share that diversity is a good thing.”

The reporting capstone is a chance for upper-division journalism students to showcase their technical and storytelling skills in one project. The projects always cover a wide range of issues, including diversity in children’s books, vegetarian options in school lunches and parental incarceration. But after witnessing a global racial reckoning in Summer 2020, many students chose to work on stories about what can happen when cultures collide.

“Students were exposed to the fault lines developing in our society. Their capstones tell the stories of people at the epicenter of that collision. Instead of solely focusing on the systemic conflict that drives a wedge between communities, students sought to engage with the solutions,” said journalism instructor J.D. Allen. “These concepts help people make informed decisions about their lives and communities.”

Senior Lilly Parnell, of Tarpon Springs, FL, worked at a spice shop in Port Jefferson, NY, before the pandemic and has always been interested in cuisine from different countries and cultures. Her four-part story, “ To better appreciate food, appropriation is a dish that must be sent back to the kitchen ,” explores how chefs and even some grocery stores navigate cooking with diverse flavors and methods, and how difficult it is to blend cultures without slipping into cultural appropriation.

“Last year, I discovered soup dumplings at Trader Joe’s and became obsessed with them. I discovered they are a hugely popular meal in certain Asian countries,” Parnell said. “Is discovering these kinds of foods in the frozen-food section a good thing because it’s opening up people — especially white people — to new foods and cultures? Or is it a bad thing because you lose the community feeling of preparing them and the history and what that food represents?”

Heredia, who is Puerto Rican and Dominican, also examined cultural appropriation, looking at Spirituality TikTok, also known as WitchTok. On the platform, Heredia found that yoga videos are often sexualized by commenters and smudging practices lose their deep connection and significance to indigenous cultures. Her story also explores ways individuals can combat their own ignorance in the story, “ WitchTok: Is it a whitewashing spirituality? ”

“I’m interested in different spiritualities and learning more about different cultures, so these videos come up on my ‘For You’ page,” she said. “Anything that gets people interested [in other cultures] is good, but they can’t get all their information from something like TikTok. A lot of these very short videos explain things completely wrong.”

In contrast, Danyi Ji, a senior from China, found that the fan cultures of Asia, particularly South Korea and China, are influencing how Americans experience pop culture. “ Asia’s fan economy sweeps NYC ” looks at how young adults engage with the latest trends from Asia, from K-Pop to the hit Netflix show Squid Game .

Seniors Amaya McDonald, of Spring Valley, NY, and Jocelyn Cruz, of Central Islip, NY, both chose to explore disparities in education.

In “ ‘I don’t understand them:’ English Language Learners need a more equitable education, ” McDonald drew from her grade-school experiences in Rockland County. She compared the experiences of students learning English in two of the county’s districts, one more affluent and one disadvantaged, examining individual experiences and state education data.

“This story is something I’ve always noticed; even as a high school senior I knew I wanted to do a story about the disparities in education between these two districts,” McDonald said. “The class was a great opportunity to do it. I don’t think I would have had the time to develop this kind of story otherwise.”

Cruz’s story, “ Are underrepresented, anxious college students suffering from imposter syndrome? ,” looks closely at Stony Brook students from underrepresented communities and how they navigate higher education — a world that they have less understanding of than many of their peers. Inspired by 60 Minutes , Cruz was the only student this semester to include a broadcast-style interview in her story.

“I wanted to do something with imposter syndrome because I know there’s tons of people at Stony Brook and around the world who deal with it,” said Cruz, who plans to work in broadcast journalism. “It eventually became more of a personal story because imposter syndrome happens to everyone, not just first-generation college students. It happened to me when I was playing sports and saw someone better than me on the team, and as a student at Stony Brook.”

Increasingly, at Stony Brook and at journalism programs around the country, students are eager to tell stories that wrestle with difficult cultural conversations, and to engage people and ideas that have traditionally been hidden from the mainstream media.

“Especially as journalism students, we know there’s a world out there we can learn about, even if we can’t see it or travel to it,” Parnell said. “Especially over the last couple of years, we’ve been able to better understand how drastically life can be different for people in our country. We’re really aware of it, and we can point it out and write about it and show these different perspectives.”

How to design a capstone project for digital journalism majors

A capstone project for digital journalism majors can take the form of a multiplatform investigative story, coupled with a content strategy which involves using digital tools for topic research, data collection and content promotion.

A capstone project is a multifaceted assignment that serves as a culminating academic and intellectual experience for students. For a semester-long project, a digital journalism student, along with his or her instructor, can consider following this 4-step guideline:

Step 1: Topic research

Student proposes one or more topics for instructor approval. The proposed topics should be newsworthy or noteworthy; in other words, there should be demonstrated interest in this topic. To that end, student needs to conduct keyword researches and cite web metrics data to support the proposed topic(s).

For this step, student needs to demonstrate (a) understanding of news values and (b) expertise in using Google keyword tools such as Keyword Planner and Google Trends.

Step 2: Multiplatform content production

With an approved topic, student produces a variety of contents: article, video, audio slideshow, photo gallery, data visualization, interactive map.

For this step, students needs to demonstrate expertise in:

  • news reporting and writing
  • audio and video production
  • photography and photo editing
  • audio slideshow production
  • use of digital tools such as Tableau (data visualization) and Google Maps (interactive map)

If the curriculum includes required courses in web programming, student may also need to demonstrate expertise in javascript/jQuery and/or other programming languages.

Step 3: Content presentation

Once created, the contents need to be optimized for web and digital delivery. Student needs to format the texts for easy online reading, implement search engine optimization, upload contents to appropriate web venues, create a blog, and pool all the pieces into a digital story package.

For this step, student needs to demonstrate expertise in:

  • writing for the web: how to format texts that facilitate online reading
  • search engine optimization (SEO): how to identify a group of keywords that help search engines find the contents; how to strategically embed keywords in texts; how to write meta texts
  • digital delivery: how to set up and tweak WordPress; how to upload contents to online services such as YouTube, Dropbox, Flickr, Soundcloud, etc.

Step 4: Content promotion

Student needs to prepare a detailed plan for how to promote his or her story; with instructor approval, student carries out some elements in the plan and documents the results. The promotion plan may include social media promotion, building back linking, engaging social media influencers, online press release, etc.

  • social media marketing: it is not about how to set up a Twitter account or Facebook page, it is the strategy behind such social media accounts
  • using web metrics tools: student needs to set up a Google Analytics account and incorporate relevant traffic reports in content promotion
  • public relation: how to write and distribute a press release

If you are a digital journalism instructor or student, I’d like to hear your comments on how to improve this capstone project.

All communication studies majors are required to complete a capstone in a 4xxx/5xxx-level communication studies course. Guidelines for completing this capstone requirement are at the bottom of this page.

In order to complete your capstone, you will need to do the following:

  • Enroll in a 4xxx- or 5xxx-level communication studies course.
  • Enroll in COMM 3999W as S/N for 1 credit. This accompanies registration in the 4xxx- or 5xxx-level communication studies course. You will need to complete the  COMM 3999w (capstone) permission number request form  to obtain a permission number for the section that links to your selected 4/5xxx course.
  • Inform the professor of your selected course at the start of the semester that you wish to write your capstone project in the course.

Note:  If a student fails to meet these requirements, the professor of the 4/5xxx-level course will enter a grade of "N" in COMM 3999W. No grades of "Incomplete" will be allowed. See "Retaking COMM 3999W" for additional information.

Capstone Project Request Form

Request your Capstone Project permission number .

Important Notes

  • All communication studies primary majors are required to produce a capstone. If you are completing communication studies as a second major, and your primary major is in CLA,  contact the communication studies departmental advisor to discuss a potential waiver.
  • Online Distance Learning (ODL) sections of 4/5xxx-level communication studies courses are not eligible for capstone project completion.
  • Specific expectations for capstones vary. It is vitally important for you to pay close attention to the specific requirements identified by your course instructor.
  • You must register for COMM 3999W during the semester in which the capstone project is completed.
  • It is advisable for you to complete the capstone in advance of your final semester, if possible.

A Word of Advice

The most common problem that leads to failing the capstone project and having to retake COMM 3999W is waiting too long to start the project. Some projects contain multiple components; all projects contain a paper, which will need revision. Start early on your capstone project and allow plenty of time to receive instructor feedback on a complete draft (preferable multiple drafts) and revise as necessary.

Capstone Project Requirements

More information on capstone project requirements (PDF) .

1. Capstone projects may be completed in all 4xxx or 5xxx-level courses offered in the Department of Communication Studies. In addition, the student must register for COMM 3995W (1 credit), so that the capstone project consists of a) 4 credits and b) meets CLA-mandated writing-intensive requirements.

2. Capstone project requirements, expectations, and evaluation criteria must be explicitly described in the course syllabus. The capstone project must be clearly separated from other graded course assignments in the syllabus and/or be presented in a separate document disseminated to students.

3. Capstone projects demonstrate the overall quality of a student’s cumulative education while highlighting the depth of specific skills that define communication studies. The capstone project may take the form of research, civic engagement, a creative project, or a combination of these.

All capstone projects must be accompanied by argument-driven documentation that fulfills writing-intensive requirements: Papers are written in stages, revision is built into their development process, and at least 30% of the capstone grade is based on the quality of the student’s writing.

4. Capstone projects in the Department of Communication Studies may be research-based, civic engagement, or creative in nature:

  • Research-based capstone projects emerge from a semester-long process of scholarly inquiry. They must have a clearly identified research question, demonstrate appropriate application of relevant theoretical and/or methodological concepts, and avoid content errors. Research-based capstones culminate in an argument-driven paper that is oriented to an academic audience or lay audience interested in communication. It consists of at least 2,500 words, engages at least 10 scholarly sources, and uses a citation guide (e.g., MLA, APA, Chicago). The paper needs to demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between concepts, claims, and evidence.
  • Why is the community program needed?, What can be learned?, What can be delivered?
  • documents the activities of the student (what was done, when, where, how?).
  • performs an analysis by addressing questions, such as: Did the project meet its stated goals?, What could have been improved, how and why?, What was learned that pertains to a communication perspective?, What recommendations for future forms of engagement can be advanced based on this experience?

The final argument-driven paper addresses an academic or lay audience interested in communication, and it should be at least 1,500 words in length. The paper needs to document all sources and materials and needs to demonstrate clear reasoning in making a connection between the civic engagement activities that were conducted and their final interpretation and evaluation.

  • creates a justification for the creative task based on ideas gathered from extant scholarship (at least of 5 sources) in communication by addressing questions, such as: What are the sources of its creative vision?, what communication concepts can be explored or applied?, who would be the target audience?
  • documents the creative process and describes the final product with sufficient detail
  • performs an analysis that results in an argument (how does the final artifact embody its artistic vision, engage with its guiding concepts and principles, appeal to its ideal audience?).

The final argument-driven paper, addressed to an academic or lay audience interested in communication, should be at least 1,500 words in length. The paper needs to document all sources and materials. It also needs to demonstrate clear reasoning in making a connection between the creative process, the formal features of the creative product, and the final interpretation and evaluation of the project’s value.

5. Students who have completed projects in other communication-related courses for a) study abroad, b) internships (including approved CCLC communication-related internships), c) independent studies, or c) communication courses that have transferred to the University of Minnesota may submit their project to the Director of Undergraduate Studies for consideration as a capstone project. Decisions are made on a case-by-case basis. All projects must be centrally focused on human communication.

6. COMM 3995W (1 credit) is graded on a Satisfactory / Nonsatisfactory basis.

7. If a capstone project fails to meet minimum guidelines, the student has the following options: A t the discretion of the instructor, a student may register for COMM 3999W in the following regular semester and continue to revise the failed project under the supervision of the original instructor. A student may also begin a new capstone project in a different COMM 4/5xxx course in any semester following the failed capstone project. In all cases, the student must register for COMM 3999W.

8. The honors thesis replaces the capstone project.

9. Students who double-major in communication studies and a second discipline may choose in what discipline to complete their capstone project.

5 Ph.D. in Sports Management Capstone Topics

Top 5 topics for a dissertation in sports management.

  • Gender in Sports
  • Football Safety Regulations
  • Role of Politics in Sport
  • Improving Random Drug Testing
  • Holding Athletes to Unrealistic Standards

To complete a Ph.D. in Sports Management, students have to fulfill the dissertation requirement that demands independent research, a lengthy write-up, and thesis defense. Sometimes, however, the beginning may seem like the most difficult part of the process as finding a good topic can be incredibly hard.

1. Gender in Sports

As one of the issues that have been in the spotlight recently, the role of gender in sports is certainly a great topic for any Ph.D. student. With the recent win of the United States female national team in soccer, which claimed the world title twice in a row, many have complained about equal pay issues. And rightly so. After all, women who participate in sports continue to only make a fraction of men’s salaries. This comes without any regard for efficiency and success as proven by the female soccer team that outranks their male counterparts in virtually every category. Thus, a topic in this area would be quite easy to research and even easier to write.

2. Football Safety Regulations

Over the past few decades, the National Football League has witnessed innumerable changes relating to the safety measures. After the current commissioner of the league, Roger Goodell, took over in 2006, the rules got even more strict. Nonetheless, the number of players who suffer from concussions or career-ending injuries is still concerningly high. Students who choose to make their sports management dissertation focused on these regulations and potential ways to improve them would have a very fun and exciting topic at their hands.

3. Role of Politics in Sport

A few years ago, Colin Kaepernick engaged what seemed to be the entire United States in a fierce battle over the role of politics in sport. His silent protest ignited a passionate response from both sides. Even after those types of protests passed, politics have found a way to get involved in every sport. Whilst the two spheres had many touching points throughout history, the growing connections between them have certainly impacted sports in a variety of ways. Students who are interested in this topic could look into the most common benefits and downsides of athletes and politicians crossing over into each others’ domains.

4. Improving Random Drug Testing

One of the most prevalent complaints when it comes to random drug testing is the fact that it sometimes appears to be everything but random. In 2018, for instance, NFL player Eric Reid was selected for a total of seven tests within just 11 weeks. According to The Guardian , statistics showed that the odds of this happening were highly improbable. The scandal was so large that the NFL was forced to issue a public statement explaining how their algorithm works. Since these types of problems are present across the board, sports management students in Ph.D. programs can seek ways to help improve the testing procedures.

5. Holding Athletes to Unrealistic Standards

Although incredibly high earnings and fame are very attractive benefits of being a successful athlete, there are quite a few downsides as well. The most dangerous one is the fact that people tend to hold these individuals to unrealistic standards. Since they are constantly under the spotlight, it is not uncommon to see them being criticized for pretty much anything that they do. Such unreasonable scrutiny can be very dangerous and push those individuals to a breaking point. Hence why a topic explaining why athletes should not be held above anyone else could be both insightful and helpful.

Students who may want to combine other topics in their dissertation can look into questions related to athletes’ pay, media’s role in sports, and so on. Those who may simply want to focus their Ph.D. in Sports Management on contemporary sports issues, however, should look into one of these five choices.

It's not every day a college student has the opportunity to participate in a $1.5 million funded capstone project.

For Tyler Jiemback, an Arizona State University alumni who graduated from  The Polytechnic School , part of the  Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering , in May 2022 with a Bachelor of Science in engineering, this daydream of an opportunity became a reality during his senior year of college when he and a team of other students participated in a capstone project in partnership with Lallemand Baking .

A portrait of Tyler Jiemback

The capstone project is a culminating experience for students that can vary from writing a thesis to performances and exhibits. With many of the ASU undergraduate degree recipients participating, these projects explore skills in writing, oral communication, project management and hands-on research.

Senior capstones are recognized as transformative learning experiences, serving as high-impact projects that enable students to develop innovative solutions to challenges that may occur in professional settings. The completion of senior capstones showcases students' proficiency in the knowledge acquired at ASU and the practical implementation of their chosen area of study.

At the beginning of the capstone process, industry partners showcase their project proposals, offering students a glimpse into a real-world problem in need of a solution.

One presentation stood out to Jiemback above all others.

“Lallemand was a bit unique in that they went in knowing that they were looking for someone to hire full time, which was, admittedly, one of the main reasons I joined the project,” Jiemback says. “At the beginning of your senior year of engineering, the biggest hurdle you face isn't the class workload, it's securing your first post-graduation job.”

As a supplier of yeast and baking ingredient solutions, Lallemand Baking emphasizes an evolutionary approach by delivering value through its innovative baking solutions.

“We have large facilities in production all day long, 365 days a year, with a strong workforce embedded inside of them,” says Audrey St. Onge, president and general manager of Lallemand Baking, North America. “We don't like to call ourselves manufacturers; we’re more producers of a special ingredient.”

Lallemand Baking’s primary concern revolved around the manual palletizing process for both 50-pound bags and 40-pound boxes of dry yeast on the production line. The manual handling of these products posed risks of injury, operational inconsistencies and often led to high turnover.

“They wanted us to come in and evaluate their production line, see how we could optimize the entire product flow and then implement a new design for a new system,” Jiemback says.

Jiemback realized that the introduction of an automated palletizing system had the potential to comprehensively address these issues.

“One of my favorite parts of their proposal was how open-ended they left it," he says. "They left us a lot of room for autonomy, creativity and design, which really drew me to the project.”

During a capstone project, each student ranks their preferred projects and the program coordinators make matches based on skill set alignment. Together, Jiemback and his team worked through the project's design phase.

“Pretty much all of the work was done as a group,” he says. “It's really hard to do independent work since the capstone is such an interdisciplinary process.”

Throughout the project, Jiemback collaborated with Lallemand Baking to redesign the yeast production lines in the company’s factory. This included designing the layout, integrating a robotic palletizer and implementing real-time data systems.

“They put no restrictions on us," Jiemback says. "We were able to draw from a lot of the new technology we were exposed to during our degree at ASU and discover new ways to apply that technology without limitations, which was so fun.”

The primary objective was to enhance production output while minimizing the physical strain on factory workers.

An industrial robot picks up 50 pound bags and 40 pound boxes of dry yeast.

“In simplest terms, we developed a new production line layout that improved and streamlined this process, allowing for an efficient product flow, consistent output levels and a lower labor cost,” Jiemback says.

This solution, however, was not without its challenges.

“Designing a system such as this can be easy, but making it work with all of the restrictions is difficult,” says Chuck Dulisse, vice president of engineering and asset management at Lallemand Baking. “With such limited space and the sheer speed of the equipment, finding a way to make one piece of equipment palletize three different assembly lines was not an easy feat.”

Jiemback adds, “I think one of the biggest challenges was maintaining consistent communication between Lallemand and the capstone team. We were very fortunate in that we got to collaborate with the upper management, but it was often difficult to carve out sufficient time to discuss our design.”

The one piece of advice Jiemback would give to students beginning their capstone project is to ask as many questions as possible. The more inquisitive you are, the better your project will turn out, he says.

After the completion of his capstone, Jiemback was offered a full-time position at Lallemand Baking as a manufacturing engineer.

“What I liked about Tyler is he wasn't afraid to ask questions,” St. Onge says. “He has leadership skills built within him. He truly shined out of the pack, and I knew he was a member of our team.”

In January 2024, a year and a half after the completion of the capstone project, Lallemand Baking installed Jiemback's finished robot on the factory floor. Seeing the process unfold from start to finish was an incredibly rewarding experience for Jiemback.

“I was so proud of Tyler when I saw him standing beside the finished robot,” St. Onge says.

Today, Jiemback enjoys the diverse nature of his work at Lallemand Baking and he values having the freedom to explore and grow without fear of scrutiny.

“The value that capstones bring to companies is incredible,” St. Onge says. “I will continue to develop these kinds of partnerships and take opportunities to work hand-in-hand with students to help fuel new energy. It's a win-win partnership.”

With appreciation for where his capstone project has landed him, Jiemback looks forward to his bright future.

“As my career continues to unfold,” he says, “I hope to use my unique perspective to bring new technology and ideas into the manufacturing space.”
