In 2007, Shah Rukh Khan led 16 young girls to cinematic hockey glory, empowering them and in the process, clearing his own name that had been besmirched with the tag of ‘traitor’. Chak De! India is a cult classic that is often counted among Shah Rukh’s best films.

Sixteen years later, in 2023, Shah Rukh becomes the leader of an all-girls team (only six as opposed to 16), empowering them and in the process, clearing his father’s name that had been besmirched with the tag of ‘traitor’. Jawan , his latest release, is all set to become a mega blockbuster, certain to be counted among the Bollywood superstar’s most significant movies.

Of course, the parallels between Chak De ! India and Jawan end right there. In terms of treatment and scale, they are poles apart. Jawan sees SRK in action mode, almost as if his earlier film Pathaan consumed a year’s supply of steroids. It’s a superstar vehicle that celebrates the charm and enduring appeal of Khan and on that metric, it succeeds wildly. He is a joy to watch.

Add to that, a load of meta references to past movies and real-life controversies, a strong message, popular South Indian stars, a powerful sprinkling of politics, some surprise cameos, and you have the recipe for the perfect masala Bollywood film, a genre that the actor seems to be hell-bent on reviving.

After a spectacular opening scene set somewhere on the border area, where an old amnesiac Shah Rukh rescues a group of villagers from villains and asks, "Who am I?", only to be greeted with his full name on screen followed by the credits, the action shifts to the hijacking of a local train in Mumbai. SRK once again appears, this time with six female badass aides and starts blackmailing the government. Unlike other hijackers, his demands are not personal, they are all meant for the greater common good. Turns out he is a modern-day Robinhood named Azad, in charge of a weird women’s prison with high-tech machinery that looks like Professor’s set in Money Heist .

This premise is all that you need to know about the plot of the film. From here on, it’s a ride that sees too many elements stuffed in too small a box --- a hectic, inexplicable romance between Shah Rukh and Nayanthara (playing a glamorous cop), a precocious child, father and son moments, a long flashback and a mean villain who is the epitome of all evil.

Do they all work? Individually, not by a mile. The SRK-Nayanthara love story has no chemistry while emotional and romantic scenes appear more like breaks between the next action set piece. The back stories --- of Khan’s team members as well as his own --- lack punch or emotion. But overall, the package compels you to accept the film's undeniable entertainment appeal.

Jawan is the sort of film where everyone walks in slo-mo to Anirudh Ravichander’s thunderous music. It’s also the film where your disbelief should not just be suspended but completely banished. Do not ask questions or even wonder ‘how do these things happen?’ You need to just surrender as one unbelievable sequence after another unfolds, often without a shred of logic (sample this: a doctor checks the pulse of a character and announces she’s pregnant).

What makes it a cut above the rest is the politics. A number of issues take centrestage --- farmer’s suicides, environmental degradation, crumbling healthcare, businessmen influencing elections and faulty governance. And then there is the monologue to watch out for --- it’s not Azad but Shah Rukh Khan making a fervent appeal to ask the right questions to your leaders.

Wish the same attention had been given to character arcs as well. Nayanthara is a force to reckon with in Tollywood but here, her emoting skills leave a lot to be desired. The supporting actors, from Sanya Malhotra, Priyamani, Riddhi Dogra to even Sunil Grover simply fill in the blanks, none of them making an impact. Vijay Sethupathi, the powerhouse actor, is actually disappointing as the antagonist, not oozing the menace expected to match Shah Rukh’s 360-degree cool quotient.

Revenge --- personal and social --- is the central theme in Jawan and while that is a tried-and-tested trope, director Atlee gives it the ultra-stylised Tollywood-meets-Bollywood treatment. It may have crater-sized holes as far as logic is concerned but what it has in oodles is Shah Rukh Khan. And that’s not bad news at all. Also, there are two fabulous cameos featuring A-listers, and a juicy possibility mentioned in the end credits. If you have the patience, wait for it.

Jawan Movie Review: Shah Rukh Khan’s film with Atlee rides high on ACTION, EMOTION and plenty of MASS moments

There’s a different kind of excitement in the air while watching the first day first show of a tentpole quintessential Hindi Film. After delivering a historic success with Pathaan , Shah Rukh Khan is back again with another commercial entertainer, the Atlee directed Jawan. With this action-packed saga, the team has promised a big screen experience like never before. Does Jawan live onto all the hype? Let’s find out!

What works for Jawan?

It’s difficult to explain the plot of Jawan in one paragraph as writer and director, Atlee, has packaged the film with so many sub-plots that eventually lead to the finale. Jawan is among those rare well written commercial films of Hindi Cinema, where the mass and elevation moments are stitched to perfection in a well written, tight screenplay. The narrative of Jawan keeps you hooked from the word go and makes you wonder what will happen next.

Director Atlee knows how to build on the emotions and make the audience root for the journey of the leading hero. There is so much happening all through the narrative, that despite the runtime of 2 hours and 38 minutes, the audience is hooked from start to finish. The action blocks happen for a purpose and are backed by strong emotions. The writing is such that the filmmaker has beautifully married the plot with a high point, every few minutes.

Atlee presents Shah Rukh Khan like a demi-god and SRK aces the mass avatar to perfection. The character evolution and elevation of Shah Rukh Khan is something that every hero of Indian Cinema would dream for and that’s the biggest WIN for Atlee. Right from the introduction scene, to the hijack episode, the pre-interval block, the post interval flash back, the robbery episode; in the second half and prolonged climax – Jawan is loaded with whistle-worthy moments. While the story and emotions engage you into the world in the first half, the second half has two of the best mass moments of the film, one of which is the robbery sequence, which makes up for some flaws in the latter half.

Jawan is a lot more than what one can expect – and it’s a rather brave film too as SRK makes strong anti-establishment statements too through the film. The back-stories of all the female cast in SRK’s team – Priyamani, Sanya Malhotra, Sanjeeta Bhattacharya, Leher Khan and Girja Oak among others – is well integrated to amp up the emotional quotient. The scale of Jawan is unlike what one has seen in a film set in India. Every frame has grandeur written over it. The background score by Anirudh enhances the cinema watching experience – he elevates the mass moments and takes them to a different level. The score used for Vikram Rathore just adds on to the aura of the character. It’s a vigilante film done right.

What doesn’t work for Jawan?

Jawan warranted better music as a tentpole entertainer doesn’t really have that one quintessential chartbuster. While Challeya is the best of the lot, a bigger dance number than Zinda Banda with SRK, would have made the film tick mark the box of that one dance number that stands the test of time. Though the film has some strong dialogues in the second half, Sumit Arora could have packed a bigger punch with regards to one-liners.

The makers could have easily chopped the Farrata song in the second half, thereby bringing the run-time down by about 5 minutes. The romantic track of SRK with Nayanthara isn’t convincing as their relationship escalates quickly. The comic undertones towards the end of the climax could have been avoided as the intensity was at its peak in the sequences preceding those in the finale.

While Vijay Sethupathi rises above what’s written on the paper, his character could have been written better, with a stronger conclusion.

Performances of actors in Jawan

Jawan is an out and out Shah Rukh Khan show.  Right from the first frame till the last, SRK delivers a performance that would be remembered for a long time. From the display of his heroism and machoism to the emotional sequences, action blocks and the hard-hitting dramatic monologues – He does everything that one expects of a Hindi Film Hero. While a major part of the narrative rides on SRK as Azad, it’s the father, Vikram Rathore, who is a complete show-stealer. Every sequence featuring SRK as Vikram Rathore would be greeted with seetis and taalis from the audience. Nayanthara makes a smashing debut in Hindi. As Narmada, she gets her moments to shine, especially in the first half. She makes all those action sequences look believable and looks convincing in a role that requires her to share a unique dynamic with the leading hero. Vijay Sethupathi as Kaali is a perfect casting of a quintessential antagonist in a feature film. While his character is decently written on the paper, he takes it to another level on screen with the wicked smile and dialogue delivery. Sanya Malhotra, Priyamani, Riddhi Dogra, Sanjeeta Bhattacharya, Girija Oak, Lehar Khan, Aaliyan Qureshi, Eijaz Khan and Sunil Grover do well in their respective parts. Deepika Padukone is impactful in her cameo avatar, and makes her presence felt despite limited screen time. Sanjay Dutt’s appearance at an unexpected juncture is sure to evoke whistles from the masses.

Final Verdict of Jawan

Jawan packs a solid punch with action, drama, emotion and scale packaged to perfection in the screenplay by Atlee. It’s driven by Shah Rukh Khan like never before in a once-in-a-lifetime kind of heroic characters of Azad and Vikram Rathore. The action blocks are backed by emotions combined with a strong story. With plenty of mass moments, Jawan is PEAK COMMERCIAL ENTERTAINER and is headed to be a HISTORIC BLOCKBUSTER. Its vigilante done right, with Shah Rukh Khan’s touch in commercial palate of filmmaking.

फिल्म ‘जवान’ क्या है? तो सबसे पहले इसी पहले सवाल का जवाब और वह यह है कि ये फिल्म भारतीय सेना से लेकर देश के किसानों तक की बात करती है। सही नाम इस फिल्म का ‘जय जवान, जय किसान’ ही होना चाहिए था, लेकिन तब शायद ये एक सियासी फिल्म के तौर पर पहचानी जाती। फिल्म में सियासत की बातें भरपूर हैं और साथ ही शाहरुख के स्वैग का हर लड्डू मोतीचूर भी है। कहानी थोड़ी घुमावदार है और इसके हर मोड़ पर दर्शक तालियां पीटने को मजबूर दिखाई देते हैं। जेल में एक बच्चे का जन्म होता है। बच्चे को एक नई मां भी मिलती है। दिन जन्माष्टमी का है। कथा आज के वसुदेव-देवकी के बेटे सरीखी ही है। लेकिन, इस फिल्म में शाहरुख खान ने और भी बहुत कुछ कहा है जो देश की मौजूदा राजनीति पर एक सजग निर्माता, एक बेहतरीन निर्देशक और एक सुलझे हुए अभिनेता की टिप्पणियां भी हैं।

Jawan Movie Review: Shah Rukh Khan Gets From South What Bollywood Failed To Do For Years!

This is shah rukh khan proving why, indeed, he's the last of the stars.

The mummy-form SRK, who shatters every last of his enemies, is seen asking, “Main Kaun Hoon?” (Who am I?) with the expression those actors have who are brought back to the shows after being in a Coma for months because of the high-payment demand. A kid promises him, “I’ll find out who you’re when I grow up!” adding to the typical Atlee drama.

Thirty years later, we’ve Vikram Rathore SRK, a police officer turned Robinhood. He’s doing everything the government should do to make things easier for the citizens. Now, is Vikram the same SRK we saw at the start? Or they’re different people? If they’re indeed different, who are they? That’s what the storyline is all about.

Jawan Movie Review: Script Analysis

Upon going through Atlee’s filmography, you’ll realise how there’s one massive commonality between all of them; it’s the way he makes films for a larger section of the audience. That’s one of the significant reasons Gadar 2 did so well; it was made for a section that comprised more than 70% of the theatres-going crowd in India. Atlee unabashedly has been doing the same thing since forever.

Jawan is designed so that when you start feeling it’s getting dragged, a ‘seeti-maar’ sequence will await you. You can see Shah Rukh Khan visibly enjoying while wearing all the different hats in the film. For some reason, Shah Rukh Khan takes a little excessive effort in dubbing for the Hindi version and comes across as a bit of ‘extra’ regarding voice-to-body movement. Yes, it’ll remind you of Aparichit, Gabbar Is Back, but this is better designed (than Gabbar…) to be a true-blue masala film.

Following Atlee’s direction pattern, you’d notice how he directs Multiple films in one film. His focus on fans-worshipping heroism is the most crucial thing, probably more important than the story and the screenplay. G. K. Vishnu’s cinematography excels in the action scenes, not in the slo-mo ones, but it’s again the ground action, the hand-combats that get the most detailed camerawork.

Jawan Movie Review: Star Performance

Shah Rukh Khan delivers probably his best performance when it comes to his stint in commercial cinema. Raees & Pathaan are good examples; this one adds a layer of portraying multiple characters, and SRK nails it yet again. Three of his characters leave a mark, and the rest just fuel the cluttery narrative.

Character-wise, Nayanthara gets a decisive role to play against Shah, but I wish it had more depth to cause some Influence on the storyline. She looks breathtaking in each and every frame she’s in. Vijay Sethupathi is a far superior actor than what he’s made to do here. He deserved better writing. From the supporting cast, Sanya Malhotra & Sunil Grover fail to leave any mark. Deepika Padukone, in her special cameo, looks oomphy in her 90s avatar donning some super-sensual sarees.

Jawan Movie Review: Direction, Music

Atlee has studied extensively and knows precisely how to play with the nerves of the Indian audience. With Jawan, he serves precisely what would be lapped up by an Indian audience with some additional masala.

Anirudh Ravichander loses out on songs but wins big on the background score. You won’t listen to the routine ‘speed-breaking’ songs, but you surely vibe to the orchestral magic he has created with the instruments.

Jawan Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done, Jawan will always be remembered for Atlee’s extraordinary way of giving Shah Rukh Khan a befitting tribute, proving why he’s, for all reasons, ‘the last of the stars’.

Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan passed with ‘U/A’ certificate by CBFC, seven crucial changes suggested. Read details

As the anticipation about Shah Rukh Khan ‘s next Jawan builds up, there is good news for movie lovers and fans, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has passed the film, directed by Atlee, with a ‘U/A’ certificate. Also with the certification the board has also suggested seven crucial changes in the film.

Jawan is scheduled to release in theatres all over the world on September 7. Along with Shah Rukh Khan, the film stars Nayanthara as the female lead, Sanya Malhota and Deepika Padukone in cameos. Jawan will be SRK’s second film after his rocking comeback Pathaan , which had also received ‘U/A’ certificate from the CBFC. The film, directed by Siddharth Anand, also starring Deepika Padukone and John Abraham made Rs 396.02 crore in India and crossed the Rs 1000 crore mark in its worldwide gross collection.

What is ‘U/A’ certificate?

This means that people of all age groups can watch Jawan but kids under 12 years of age are advised parental guidance, but it is not necessary. These films can contain violent action scenes.

A list of seven changes in Jawan as suggested by the CBFC has been circulating on social media.

What are the changes suggested by the CBFC in Jawan?

According to Bollywood Hungama the makers have been asked to make seven changes in the film.

The reported changes suggested in SRK’s Jawan are:

1) To reduce the timing and limit the visuals visuals of suicide in one of the scenes.

2) Removal of the visuals that show a human body being beheaded.

3) Change an ‘out of context’ reference of the Honourable President of India with ‘Head Of State’.

4) Removal of words ‘paida hoke’ from one of the dialog.

5) Phrase ‘ Ungli karna ‘ was replaced with ‘ Usse use karo ‘ and the word ‘ Sampraday ‘ was added to yet another dialog in the film.

6) Yet another dialogue at 1 hour 39 minutes has been modified.

7) Lastly, the ‘irrelevant references’ to NSG (National Security Guard) were removed. NSG has now been changed to IISG in the film.

The makers of Jawan must have breathed a sigh of relief because the changes suggested are not as severe as compared to Pathaan. The board had passed the film with ‘U/A’ certificate and had suggested twelve cuts including Deepika Padukone’s close-up shots in “Besharam Rang” song.

Actor Indresh Malik, known for his role as Ustaad ji on the Netflix series Heeramandi, received praise and a reward of Rs 500 from filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali for his moving performance in the 'nath' sequence.
