Every night I dream of living a life of a celebrity. In my dream I see myself dressed up like a model posing for cameras. It is my dream to work in the film industry and become famous. But, for that, I will have to work really hard. My mother always tells me to concentrate on studies and live up to the dream of becoming a model. My father also supports me and he says that he believes in me. Once he told me that I should help others and be in good books of the people to win their heart as it will help me make my dream come true.

Every day I like to take some time aside from my responsibilities to think about my dreams and all the goals I want to achieve. My dream is to become a successful businessman. Business is something that has always intrigued me. As my father is a businessman, since childhood, I had this keen interest to be a part of or to lead a business.

Only having a dream won’t help, I also need to work towards the achievement of my dream. As doing business is not as easy as it seems, first I need to understand the basics of what business actually is. This will the first step towards my dream. So after completing my intermediary, I have enrolled myself in a reputed college to do my Bachelors in Business Administration (BBA). After completing BBA, I will also do my Masters in Business Administration. By then I will have gained the complete knowledge on business and its functioning which will help me reach my dream.

Apart from the theoretical part, I can always count on my father to share with me the practical experiences and advices that will help me shape my dream. This will take me closer to my dream of becoming a successful businessman. I have also started reading magazines about successful businessmen and their success stories in order to gain some idea that will help me in the long. I will put the best of my efforts and work hard towards achieving my dream.

Introduction:

My dream to become a Soldier started on an Army Day (January 15th), when I was still in High School. I witnessed the tribute paid to martyred soldiers at the Amar Jawan Jyoti in India Gate. It was followed by parades displaying Tanks, Missiles, and War Helicopters etc. The impression I received that day motivates me to realise my dream to become a Soldier.

Love of a Soldier:

The history of Indian independence and the life of freedom fighters has always fascinated me. Those who were responsible for the air of freedom we breathe today, loved our motherland and dedicated their lives to its well-being. These seeds in me have developed a sense of love for the country. It has also nurtured my dream to become a soldier and safeguard it.

Spirit of a Soldier:

Apart from academics, I started to collect all details about how to realise my dream to become a Soldier. I began to understand the values that inspire a Soldier to willingly face challenges and responsibly safeguard the nation even at the cost of his own life. This inspired me to study well and keep myself fit to achieve my dream to become a Soldier.

Training of a Soldier:

I also understood about the training before service. The feeling of pride and mutual loyalty is imbibed among the trainees. They are also trained to willing sacrifice for the country’s honour, with a do or die spirit. A sense of fearlessness, fairness and honesty are inculcated during the disciplined training. These components further kindled my dream to become a Soldier.

Lifestyle of a Soldier:

On the one hand, the soldier’s life is a life of self-sacrifice. On the other hand, the lifestyle it offers far exceeds my expectation, and fuels my dream to become a Soldier. Opportunities to advance in ranks, paid study holidays, subsidized housing, free medical coverage and recreational facilities are provided, apart from regular salary and perks. Lifelong pension is awarded after retirement.

Conclusion:

Many young people in the country offer the time of their life to work for big Corporates. But, I am here to pursue my dream to become a Soldier and dedicate my life to the welfare of the nation. I often encourage my friends to follow my dream to become a Soldier, at least for a short service tenure ranging from 10 to 14 years.

At a very early age, my dream was to do something big in life. But along with that I still had some fears also. I want to have a successful career, and for this, I had set an aim. It is quite essential for everybody to get them to establish professionally and successfully. Besides this, few other dreams are also necessary for me like health, relationships, and many different aspects of life. However, I also fear to get fail in achieving all these targets.

Career Dream and Fear:

When I was a kid, my dream was to become a doctor. But during my growing age, the Bollywood industry fascinated me and then my dream of becoming doctor changed to an actor. When I passed my class 12 th , the only goal that hit my mind was becoming an engineer. I always fear of dreaming about big things, but if you have potential then, you can achieve anything in life.

Dream and Fear of Health and Fitness:

When I was young, I was not so much concerned about my health. But now I realized the importance of having good health. My dream of becoming fit and healthy was only achieved due to strong willpower and eagerness of doing regular exercise. With this thought, I managed to lose around 15 kg easily. Now, I don’t fear about eating any food as I compensate that with my daily workout.

Dreams and fear about the relationship:

There is a special place of relationships in my life, and sometimes I fear about losing the important people in my life. But, now I realize that instead of thinking negative, we should try to spend more time with the people. It is as essential as my dream of good career.

Thinking only about the career and success with the little amount of fear might not offer you complete happiness later. It is good to become serious about your career, but you should also try to overcome any fear for a more successful life ahead.

Life is a dynamic process that has its ups and downs. Juggling the disparities of life can be very stressful at times and that is why you get your mind wondering in thoughts. Most thoughts are usually based on what people desire, which we call the dream life. The desires in life may not always be achieved but it is good to have a picture or at least an idea of the kind of life on desires to have. In America, people have the American dream but you as an individual should ask yourself; what is your dream life?

How my dream life looks like:

Socially, I have always imagined myself being a very influential person in my society. Currently in school, I always have the urge to influence someone but I still lack the confidence and resources to do so. I have always wanted to travel the world and explore different cultures of the world through interactions with people. I also imagine of having a great family with whom I can travel the world with.

Career-wise, I want to work at the comfort of my own home and be flexible so that I can always have time for my family. Spiritually, I have a desire to always be in good terms with God and follow the doctrines of my religion.

Economically, I want to be self-actualized at an early age so that I can focus on my influential personality, having all the resources I need. I want to be satisfied with what I will have achieved and work on living a happy life.

How I plan on living my dream life?

Living the dream life can begin any time that you chose to be as an individual. For my dream life, the things that I can achieve while still at school is the ability to have a spiritual wellness and flowing the doctrines of my religion. I can also start learning to appreciate whatever I have and living a happy life.

For the desires that I cannot achieve at the moment, I will work towards achieving them by shaping and redirecting the pathway. For example, my career, I will pursue something in the university that will allow me to work from home without necessarily going to work.

A dream life is basically the desired of one’s heart inform of an imagination. A dream life does not affect the reality in any way.

A dream is something that helps you to mold your future and aim your life to an appropriate goal. Dreaming big will help us to work for it harder and finally achieve it. Without desire and aim in life, we cannot focus and work hard to fulfill our dream.

My Dream to become a Doctor:

The biggest dream of my life is to become a doctor. I have seen many doctors, who save other people’s lives and they feel happy in the satisfaction they get through this activity. I want to be a doctor, who will serve good for this society and help poor to get good medical care without expecting big money in return.

Doctors are respected in all places and among all types of society. In spite of being different in many things like wealth, religion, etc., everyone will be in need of the best doctor to treat them honestly. I dream of being one such doctor to whom anyone can come without any doubt and fear of being tricked.

I don’t want to be a doctor who just works for money. I want to help others who can’t afford big budget treatments and choose their fate due to their lack of money. When a person is cured of their illness, the smile that appears on their face will be the greatest reward I will ever get. My dream is to become a doctor, who is praised for the kindness and get rewards through others blessings.

How to become a Doctor?

To get the admissions in a medical seat is not that easy. But I will work hard and crack the competitive exam to get a merit seat in the college. I will work hard from the beginning to end to improve my knowledge and keep updated about every upcoming and ongoing development.

I would like to choose the specialization when I can actually decide which one will suit my desire. I have an aim to serve the people in their needs and once I grow big enough to decide the correct career to fulfill my dream, I will work harder to achieve that as well.

After achieving My Dream:

Once I complete my whole medical courses I would be looking to practice in a well-reputed hospital to perfect my job. With this perfection I will start my own clinic and serve people for the rest of my life along with this I will help other students also to get trained to become a good doctor. I will make sure that my dream will come true at the best time.

We all have some sort of ambition or dream. My dream is to become a world class chef. Dreams play a very important role in moulding our future. There is a saying that “if you can imagine it, you can achieve it; if you can dream it, you can become it”. This saying implies that if you can work hard and put in your best to achieving your dream, it is very possible to live your dream. Working hard to achieve ones dream is easier said than done but if you put in your best effort and never give up, dreams are achievable.

In the path of achieving my dream, it is important that I take one step at a time. Even if I have a very big dream of becoming a word class chef, it is best for me to take steady and small steps by setting both long term and short term goals, by doing this, I am always working towards achieving my dream. When I take one step at a time, it helps not to rush into decisions and take things easy.

I know becoming a world class chef is not very easy and can only happen if complete and proper training from a very reputable institute and there isn’t much I can do at the moment to speed up the realisation of my dream since I am still in school. However, I still do my best to set my dream rolling, I follow a lot of cooking websites and blogs, watch cooking shows, read culinary books and I practice my cooking to sharpen my skills every time. These are all little steps I am taking towards achieving my dream. Though my goal is to become a world class chef, I have small goals in place for each month and year to come so that I can reach my dream.

A major hindrance to achieving my set goals and my dream is the lack of inadequacy of motivation. A lot of people have given up their goals and dreams just because they got tired on the way. It is extremely important to remain motivated and only stop is when the dream has been achieved. Highlighted below are some useful tips that I have used to keep myself motivated on the journey to reaching my dream:

i. Anytime I see that I am running out of drive and energy and I am becoming too tired to stick to my set goals, I try to remind myself of what my dream is and the feeling of pride and joy I will experience when I achieve it and become a world class chef. It feels like pressing a reset button and starting with a refreshed mind again and working harder towards achieving my dream.

ii. Long term goals and short term goals are set towards the ultimate goal of achieving my dream and as I reach these short term goals, I try to reward myself for my achievement. The reward can vary from eating dinner at my favourite restaurant or buying myself a new phone I wanted or going out with my friends. Rewarding myself is a very good way to remain motivated towards the achievements of my goals and ultimately my dream.

iii. When I work too much and have no time to relax and play, my productivity drops and I become dull. Therefore, it is a good idea to have some time for myself away from work to focus on something fun that I love. I find time in my schedule every day to engage in some form of leisure activity or sport.

iv. Having people who believes in my dream and support my goals around me makes all the difference. Having positive people helps me find the strength and courage to push on and not give up on my dream. They motivate me to work hard and do the best to achieve my goals and my dream.

v. A mistake is nothing more than an experience and an opportunity to try again and do things much better. So, instead of getting heartbroken and disheartened to the point of wanting to give up on my goals and dream when I face a tough time or make mistakes, I learn from the mistakes and move on as the tough times and mistakes make me a lot stronger.

I will keep working hard towards achieving my dream and I believe that I will become a world class chef one day.

Who in this world does not have a dream? A dream to buy a car, a dream to be a scientist, a dream to do something for the society, or just a dream to live a life with contentment. Something or the other, but surely every person has a dream. It is this dream that drives you to work hard, achieve your milestones and ride towards success in your life. My Dream – My Passion:

Like others, even I have a dream. My dream is to join the intelligence unit of the country and serve my country with pride. Usually, in order to serve the country, people think of joining the armed forces. However, I have a different point of view. I dream to join the intelligence unit and provide inputs to these armed forces so that they can protect the country in a good way and not many lives are lost fight battles with our neighbours.

Where did it all start?

Since my childhood, I have been fascinated by the role of intelligence and the methods of work they are used to. I had got a chance to be with a couple of people early in my life who were in the same field and it is from here that I got so much stuck up with this profession that I have dreamt day and night to be a part of this elite team. Moreover, I feel that I have it in me to research about things as well as people and am known in my circles to extract information from nowhere. I feel that this talent of mine can prove helpful for the country as well. Intelligence plays a crucial role in the security establishment of the country. The inputs gathered from intelligence units help the government and the forces to plan their steps both at diplomatic and at the level of securing the borders.

Another thing which excites me about this dream is that it is not a conventional field such as common occupations which are sought after by most of the youth of our country. Another very important thing to mention here that you need not formally join the intelligence to realise this dream. By keeping a check on your surroundings and providing proper information to the police in case you notice an unfavourable incident is also a form of your contribution to the security agencies of the country. If everyone remains active, a lot many incidents such as terrorist attacks can be averted.

Why having a dream is so important?

Dreams are very important for everyone. Without dreams, there will be no desire to pursue. There will be no objective to reach. We will all be nothing without dreams. Not having dreams resembles pursuing a traceless homicide. It resembles following an undetectable shadow. It is a loathsome goose pursue. We should comprehend what we need to do and pursue that desire.

A great many people have dreams. Successful ones or little ones. Indeed, even the best individuals had dreams and that is the thing that has made them what they are today. Envisioning is basic for a person. Without dreams, you will lose enthusiasm forever lastly prefer not to live. You will be exhausted and tired of the equivalent dull schedules of your everyday life and won’t discover an enthusiasm for the most energizing things. Just with dreams, will you discover a reason to carry on with your life? You will begin buckling down towards the fantasy and will never lose enthusiasm forever. You will never tire and dependably be spurred. This is the most ideal approach to end up effective. So, dream and dream big. It is the only way to achieve contentment in life.

A Dream I had Last Night

I the dream I saw that one day I was going to Agra to see the Taj Mahal with my friends. Near the bus stand few people were  selling lottery tickets. Much against the will of my firm I bought a lottery ticket of Haryana government. When it result appeared in Nav Bharat Times I was very anxious to see my number. At once I purchased a newspaper. I first of all began to see the series of lottery number.

All of a sudden my friend’s eyes fell on my number and he told me to see it. My joy knew no bounds when I saw my number and won a lottery of one lakh(Lac). I did the necessary formalities and received the amount. I started thinking how to use the amount for the welfare of the public. I belong to a poor and backward village. There is no primary school so far in this village. So most of the children do  not receive education.

They remain illiterate. So first act of public good which I dreamt was to open a primary school in my village. I dreamt that the school would remove the illiteracy from the village. They would bless me for doing a generous deed. In my village people are generally poor. Some of them have no clothes, even to cover their bodies, in the dream I had made arrangements for the free distribution of blankets and clothes for all the poor and needy people.

 I thought to spend the rest of the money on myself. Instead of thinking further. I heard the call from my mother to leave the bed. I woke at the call of my mother. I found myself that I was lying on the bare cot. No change was there in my poor condition.

It was a vivid tableau of both the familiar and the bizarre, which, in many ways, reflected the complexities of our daily lives and the human psyche. The dream was not just a series of random images but a narrative that, upon reflection, seemed to communicate profound insights.

The Setting: A Surreal Cityscape

The dream was set in a city that was a surreal amalgamation of all the cities I have visited in my life. The architecture was a fusion of old and new, with gothic cathedrals standing alongside modern skyscrapers. The dream was rich in symbolism, which I believe was a reflection of my subconscious mind. The city, with its contrasting architecture, could symbolize the dichotomy between tradition and modernity that I grapple with. The journey could represent the quest for self-understanding, while the role reversals could signify a desire to break free from societal labels and norms.

The Interpretation: A Personal Narrative

Upon waking, I was left with a sense of wonder and a desire to decipher the dream’s meaning. A Summary and Analysis of Martin Luther King’s ‘I Have a Dream’ Speech

‘I Have a Dream’ is one of the greatest speeches in American history. Delivered by Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-68) in Washington D.C. in 1963, the speech is a powerful rallying cry for racial equality and for a fairer and equal world in which African Americans will be as free as white Americans.

If you’ve ever stayed up till the small hours working on a presentation you’re due to give the next day, tearing your hair out as you try to find the right words, you can take solace in the fact that as great an orator as Martin Luther King did the same with one of the most memorable speeches ever delivered.

He reportedly stayed up until 4am the night before he was due to give his ‘I Have a Dream’, writing it out in longhand. You can read the speech in full here .

‘I Have a Dream’: background

The occasion for King’s speech was the march on Washington , which saw some 210,000 African American men, women, and children gather at the Washington Monument in August 1963, before marching to the Lincoln Memorial.

They were marching for several reasons, including jobs (many of them were out of work), but the main reason was freedom: King and many other Civil Rights leaders sought to remove segregation of black and white Americans and to ensure black Americans were treated the same as white Americans.

1963 was the centenary of the Emancipation Proclamation , in which then US President Abraham Lincoln (1809-65) had freed the African slaves in the United States in 1863. But a century on from the abolition of slavery, King points out, black Americans still are not free in many respects.

‘I Have a Dream’: summary

King begins his speech by reminding his audience that it’s a century, or ‘five score years’, since that ‘great American’ Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This ensured the freedom of the African slaves, but Black Americans are still not free, King points out, because of racial segregation and discrimination.

America is a wealthy country, and yet many Black Americans live in poverty. It is as if the Black American is an exile in his own land. King likens the gathering in Washington to cashing a cheque: in other words, claiming money that is due to be paid.

Next, King praises the ‘magnificent words’ of the US Constitution and the Declaration of Independence . King compares these documents to a promissory note, because they contain the promise that all men, including Black men, will be guaranteed what the Declaration of Independence calls ‘inalienable rights’: namely, ‘life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness’.

King asserts that America in the 1960s has ‘defaulted’ on this promissory note: in other words, it has refused to pay up. King calls it a ‘sacred obligation’, but America as a nation is like someone who has written someone else a cheque that has bounced and the money owed remains to be paid. But it is not because the money isn’t there: America, being a land of opportunity, has enough ‘funds’ to ensure everyone is prosperous enough.

King urges America to rise out of the ‘valley’ of segregation to the ‘sunlit path of racial justice’. He uses the word ‘brotherhood’ to refer to all Americans, since all men and women are God’s children. He also repeatedly emphasises the urgency of the moment. This is not some brief moment of anger but a necessary new start for America. However, King cautions his audience not to give way to bitterness and hatred, but to fight for justice in the right manner, with dignity and discipline.

Physical violence and militancy are to be avoided. King recognises that many white Americans who are also poor and marginalised feel a kinship with the Civil Rights movement, so all Americans should join together in the cause. Police brutality against Black Americans must be eradicated, as must racial discrimination in hotels and restaurants. States which forbid Black Americans from voting must change their laws.

Martin Luther King then comes to the most famous part of his speech, in which he uses the phrase ‘I have a dream’ to begin successive sentences (a rhetorical device known as anaphora ). King outlines the form that his dream, or ambition or wish for a better America, takes.

His dream, he tells his audience, is ‘deeply rooted’ in the American Dream: that notion that anybody, regardless of their background, can become prosperous and successful in the United States. King once again reminds his listeners of the opening words of the Declaration of Independence: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.’

In his dream of a better future, King sees the descendants of former Black slaves and the descendants of former slave owners united, sitting and eating together. He has a dream that one day his children will live in a country where they are judged not by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character.

Even in Mississippi and Alabama, states which are riven by racial injustice and hatred, people of all races will live together in harmony. King then broadens his dream out into ‘our hope’: a collective aspiration and endeavour. King then quotes the patriotic American song ‘ My Country, ’Tis of Thee ’, which describes America as a ‘sweet land of liberty’.

King uses anaphora again, repeating the phrase ‘let freedom ring’ several times in succession to suggest how jubilant America will be on the day that such freedoms are ensured. And when this happens, Americans will be able to join together and be closer to the day when they can sing a traditional African-American hymn : ‘Free at last. Free at last. Thank God almighty, we are free at last.’

‘I Have a Dream’: analysis

Although Martin Luther King’s speech has become known by the repeated four-word phrase ‘I Have a Dream’, which emphasises the personal nature of his vision, his speech is actually about a collective dream for a better and more equal America which is not only shared by many Black Americans but by anyone who identifies with their fight against racial injustice, segregation, and discrimination.

Nevertheless, in working from ‘I have a dream’ to a different four-word phrase, ‘this is our hope’. The shift is natural and yet it is a rhetorical masterstroke, since the vision of a better nation which King has set out as a very personal, sincere dream is thus telescoped into a universal and collective struggle for freedom.

What’s more, in moving from ‘dream’ to a different noun, ‘hope’, King suggests that what might be dismissed as an idealistic ambition is actually something that is both possible and achievable. No sooner has the dream gathered momentum than it becomes a more concrete ‘hope’.

In his ‘I Have a Dream’ speech, King was doing more than alluding to Abraham Lincoln’s signing of the Emancipation Proclamation one hundred years earlier. The opening words to his speech, ‘Five score years ago’, allude to a specific speech Lincoln himself had made a century before: the Gettysburg Address .

In that speech, delivered at the Soldiers’ National Cemetery (now known as Gettysburg National Cemetery) in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in November 1863, Lincoln had urged his listeners to continue in the fight for freedom, envisioning the day when all Americans – including Black slaves – would be free. His speech famously begins with the words: ‘Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.’

‘Four score and seven years’ is eighty-seven years, which takes us back from 1863 to 1776, the year of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. So, Martin Luther King’s allusion to the words of Lincoln’s historic speech do two things: they call back to Lincoln’s speech but also, by extension, to the founding of the United States almost two centuries before. Although Lincoln and the American Civil War represented progress in the cause to make all Americans free regardless of their ethnicity, King makes it clear in ‘I Have a Dream’ that there is still some way to go.

In the last analysis, King’s speech is a rhetorically clever and emotionally powerful call to use non-violent protest to oppose racial injustice, segregation, and discrimination, but also to ensure that all Americans are lifted out of poverty and degradation.

But most of all, King emphasises the collective endeavour that is necessary to bring about the world he wants his children to live in: the togetherness, the linking of hands, which is essential to make the dream a reality.

“Take writing for example. I’ve wanted to be a professional writer since I was a little boy, but I was too scared that I wouldn’t be any good at it. But several years ago I started pursuing this dream despite knowing how difficult it might be. I fully realize I may not make it, but I’m completely fine with that. At least I tried which is more than most people can say.”

In his essay, author Steve Bloom encourages his readers always to pursue their dreams no matter what happens. He asks, “Would you rather pursue them and fail or never try?”. He believes that it’s always better to try and fail than look back and wonder what might have been. Stop thinking that failure or success is the only end goal for pursuing your dreams. Instead, think of it as a long journey where all the experiences you get along the way are just as important as reaching the end goal.

“Dreams are hallucinations that occur during certain stages of sleep. They’re strongest during REM sleep, or the rapid eye movement stage, when you may be less likely to recall your dream. Much is known about the role of sleep in regulating our metabolism, blood pressure, brain function, and other aspects of health. But it’s been harder for researchers to explain the role of dreams. When you’re awake, your thoughts have a certain logic to them. When you sleep, your brain is still active, but your thoughts or dreams often make little or no sense.”

“We often hear stories of people who’ve learned from their dreams or been inspired by them. Think of Paul McCartney’s story of how his hit song “Yesterday” came to him in a dream or of Mendeleev’s dream-inspired construction of the periodic table of elements. But, while many of us may feel that our dreams have special meaning or a useful purpose, science has been more skeptical of that claim. Instead of being harbingers of creativity or some kind of message from our unconscious, some scientists have considered dreaming to being an unintended consequence of sleep—a byproduct of evolution without benefit.”

Author Matthew Walker, a professor of psychology and neuroscience, shares some interesting facts about dreams in his essay. According to research, dreaming is more than just a byproduct of sleep; it also serves essential functions in our well-being. 

“Dreams are basically stories and images that our mind creates while we sleep. They can be vivid. They can make you feel happy, sad, or scared. And they may seem confusing or perfectly rational. Dreams can happen at any time during sleep. But you have your most vivid dreams during a phase called REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, when your brain is most active. A quick search of an online dream dictionary will tell you that haunted houses symbolize “unfinished emotional business,” dimly lit lamps mean you’re “feeling overwhelmed by emotional issues,” a feast indicates “a lack of balance in your life,” and garages symbolize a feeling of “lacking direction or guidance in achieving your goals.” 

Author David B. Feldman, an author, speaker, and professor of counseling psychology, believes that dreams may not mean anything, but they tell us something about our emotions. In other words, if you’ve been suffering from a series of bad dreams, it could be worth checking in with yourself to see how you’ve been feeling and perhaps consider whether there’s anything you can do to improve your mood.

“Ever wish you could ice skate across a winter sky, catching crumbs of gingerbread, like flakes of snow, on your tongue? How about conquering a monster in a nightmare, bouncing between mountain peaks, walking through walls, or reading minds? Have you ever longed to hold the hand of someone you loved and lost? If you want to fulfill your fantasies, or even face your fears, you might want to try taking some control of your dreams (try being the operative). People practiced in lucid dreaming—the phenomenon of being aware that you are dreaming while you are asleep—claim that the experience allows adventure, self-discovery, and euphoric joy.”

In her essay, Author Serena Alagappan talks about lucid dreams – a type of dream where a person becomes conscious during a dream. She also talked about ways to control our dreams, such as keeping a journal, reciting mantras before bed, and believing we can. However, not everyone will be able to control their dreams because the levels of lucidity and control differ significantly between individuals.

“There was a period of six months when I tried to go off my medication – a slowly unfolding disaster – and I’d thought my dreams might settle down. Instead, they grew more deranged. Even now I think of the dream in which I was using a cigarette lighter to melt my own father, who had assumed the form of a large candle. I’ve since learned that, apart from more research being needed, this was probably a case of “REM rebound”. When you stop taking the medication, you’ll likely get a lot more REM sleep than you were getting before. In simple terms, your brain goes on a dreaming frenzy, amping up the detail.”

Author Ashleigh Young’s essay informs us how some medications, such as antidepressants, affect our dreams based on her own life experience. She said, “I’ve tried not to dwell too much on my dreams. Yes, they are vivid and sometimes truly gruesome, full of chaotic, unfathomable violence, but weird nights seemed a reasonable price to pay for the bearable days that SSRIs have helped me to have.”

Summary Essay On Martin Luther King’s “I Had a Dream” Speech

The speech by Martin Luther took place in Washington DC, Lincoln Memorial on 28 th August 1963 and the speech was mainly about racial inequality, elimination of racism and the desire for peaceful coexistence among people. With regards to racial inequality, King opened the speech by providing a discussion on the topic of Emancipation Proclamation that was issued by Abraham Lincoln that freed slaves after the civil war that took place 100 years before. The proclamation was a beacon of hope for the black people. However, he pointed out that still there was a bulk of work for them to be considered “free”. The speech also revolved around some of the unkept promises.

In this case, King made reference to both the Constitution and Declaration of Independence in the speech. He equated the promissory note to what guaranteed all the citizens the rights to liberty, life, and happiness. For instance, “this note was a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”.  The speech also touched on peaceful protests which according to King were common in the country.

He called on the protesters to stick together as they continued refraining from violent actions and not allowing hatred to take over them. Finally, King in his speech also referred to the dreams for the future in which he provided a series of demands which included granting blacks the right to take part in elections across the country. In this speech, Martin Luther makes references to events that took place in the history of the country to justify that indeed equality has not been guaranteed to all. For instance, he uses the Declaration and the Constitution to put emphasis on the promises that have not been fulfilled.

Everyone wants to be successful and rich. I also dream of becoming successful in the field I choose although I am still indecisive about the career path I will choose. But I know whatever I choose I will work hard, stay focused and make it big.

I also dream of doing something for my country. There are so many problems in the country such as poverty, illiteracy and casteism to name a few. Our country was once known for its rich cultural heritage which is all robbed now. The crime rate in the country is at an all time rise and so are various other issues. While there are a lot of loopholes in the India political system that has led to these problems however we cannot blame it all on the government. Each one of us should contribute our bit towards our country’s development. I am a firm supporter of each one teach one and have been teaching my maid’s child since the last two years.

As I grow up, I aim to join an NGO to empower the poor and needy. I dream of eradicating poverty and social inequality from our country and will do my best in this direction. If we all join hands we shall certainly be able to free our country from these evils.

It is rightly said, “Miracles start to happen when you give as much energy to your dreams as you do to your fears”. Dreams are essential. It is only when you dream big with all your heart you will be able to achieve big. As students our dream is to achieve good marks, have good friends, get support from the family and make it big in life.

Just like others, I have also nurtured a career dream from an early age. I aspire to become a famous writer and wish to write and publish a novel one day. I have never been very good when it came to verbal communication. It is embedded in my nature. I do not like to be blunt or impolite even when someone says something to me. I choose to remain quite during such situations. It is not that I cannot reply back, as mentioned “I choose” to do so as I am a peace loving person. I am also a bit of an introvert and do not like opening up with everyone. However, it is not good to pent up feelings and emotions as it can lead to stress and drain you emotionally.

I always felt an urge to shout out loud and get rid of these feelings when I was alone and soon figured out that a good way to vent these is through writing. I began writing and found out that I am actually good at it. It is hard for me to communicate my feelings verbally however it is quite easy for me to pen them down. Writing for me has now become a way of life I keep journaling all my feelings and this keeps me sorted. It has become more of a passion for me and I now aspire to turn it into my profession.

Introduction

It is thus as important to dream of having loving relationships and having fitness goals as it is to dream of succeeding professionally. As Paulo Coelho said, “When your heart truly desires something, the whole universe conspires to help you achieve that thing, simply because it is a desire that originated from the soul of the world”.

The law of attraction said to work as accurately as the law of gravitation. It said that whatever dreams and aspirations we feed in our subconscious mind come true. People often question the authenticity of this theory stating that if only dreaming could turn them into millionaires and attract all the happiness in life then everyone would be rich and happy.

However, this is the catch! The subconscious mind does not understand the difference between the positive and the negative. It treats both the positive and the negative in the same way. If you dream of success, power and love it would pull the same in your life. Likewise, if you doubt your dreams and aspirations, fear dreaming big and dwell on negativity that is what you will attract in life. And this is where most people fall short. Most people dream big but doubt their calibre. They want to attain big heights what feel that they are just ordinary people and cannot get there and their belief that they are ordinary actually turns into their reality.

Always remember, in order to attain your dreams you must believe in them and have complete faith in yourself.

One of the main hindrances in achieving the dreams and goals is lack of motivation. Many people give up on their dreams as they get tired mid way. It is essential to stay motivated and stop only when you have achieved your dream. Here are a few tips to keep you motivated:

• Remind Yourself of Your Ultimate Goal

If ever you see yourself running out of energy and get too tired to follow the set goals it is time to remind yourself of your ultimate goal and the joy and pride you will experience as you achieve it. This is like pressing the reset button to begin with a fresh mind once again.

• Reward Yourself

As you set short term goals, also keep a reward for each milestone you achieve. The reward can be anything from buying yourself a dress or visiting your favourite café or going out with friends. This is a good way to stay motivated towards achieving your goals.

• Take Some Time Off

Too much work and no play can make you rather dull and hamper your productivity which in turn can de-motivate you. It is thus a good idea to take some time off every now and then to indulge in something you love. Ideally you must squeeze in half an hour from your schedule each day to indulge in your favourite sport.

• Surround Yourself with Positive People

Surrounding yourself with people who believe in your dreams and inspire you to work hard to attain the same is a good way to stay motivated.

• Learn From Your Mistakes

Rather than getting disheartened and giving up on your dreams when you make a mistake and face tough time, it suggested to learn from your mistakes and let them make you stronger.

As you dream and set goals, it is essential to put a plan in place and work according to it to move in the right direction. Preparing a plan and getting organized are the initial steps towards attaining your dream. Dream big and overcome every obstacle to achieve the same!

I had a dream, a dream where I got up early in the morning on a bed with a mattress and four legs. My momma kissed my forehead and told me to be downstairs for breakfast. I headed to the toilet to brush my teeth with an object which was surprisingly not my finger. I put on my blue pants, in tucked my white shirt, and pulled up my socks to my shin. I ran downstairs and ate a bowl of cereal with milk. A bright yellow bus arrived in front of our house, and the conductor rang our doorbell to take me to school. My momma firmly grabbed hold of me and placed me in front of her. She stood on her knees and tied my shoelaces. She grasped my right hand, put a ten dollar note on it and whispered “Don’t spend all of it”. She then gave my hand along with a Mickey Mouse bag to the conductor, who led me to the bus. Along the path, I jumped into a puddle of water, dirtying both my and the conductor’s shoes. I looked back, and saw my momma grinning. A week ago, I was terrified to leave my parents. Then, my parents had me draw a picture of them when bright, new color pencils. They told me that they were in the picture and as long as I had it, I would always feel their presence. I wasn’t scared anymore. I had my parents in my pocket. The ride to school was exciting and eventful. I was the kind of kid who loved to be around others and make new friends. Having a dream and living with passion is very important because I believe living without passion is like being dead. Someone like Tony Hawk could agree. Tony Hawk has been a professional skateboarder for over 24 years. However, he did not receive that title overnight; Tony got his first skateboard when he was only 9 years old. Since then, Tony worked extremely hard and put a lot of his focus on skateboarding. He did it because that was his Dream. Tony’s Dream was frowned upon by many of his teachers and adults alike. One of his teachers even told him that he “would never make it in the workplace if he didn’t follow directions exactly” (Hawk), but he never gave up his Dream. Last night’s dream was unlike any other, a vivid journey through a surreal world that blended the familiar with the extraordinary. As I closed my eyes, I was transported to a shimmering field under a sky painted in purple and orange hues, leading to a city of glass and light.

In this dreamscape, I encountered Flix, a talking fox with wise eyes, who seemed to know me intimately. He guided me towards the city, discussing life’s enigmas and the hidden magic around us. This city was a utopia, where technology and nature existed in perfect harmony, and the streets buzzed with the energy of joyful, purposeful people.

At the city’s heart was a park, a communal space alive with music, art, and laughter. Here, children danced freely, and adults created and celebrated, embodying a sense of peace and community. Flix pointed out a grand tree at the park’s centre, explaining its symbolism of life’s interconnectedness and the need for harmony between humanity and nature.

The dream took a dramatic turn as a storm darkened the sky, people vanished, and the city started to disintegrate. Flix urged me to find the “Heartstone” beneath the tree, a key to restoring balance. Amidst the chaos, I unearthed a glowing stone, feeling a surge of hope and strength.

With the Heartstone, the city rebuilt itself, emerging more beautiful than before, and the people returned under a clear sky with a magnificent rainbow. Flix’s mission was accomplished, and he left me with a parting message about carrying the dream’s lessons into reality.

Awakening from this dream, I felt enlightened, carrying a new appreciation for life’s beauty and complexity. Dreams, I realized, are not just random thoughts but windows into our deepest selves, offering insights and guiding us towards a better understanding of our world.

Caitlin Clark wrote future dreams down in 3rd grade. She's about to achieve one of them.

Caitlin Clark put her future dreams down in writing when she was a third grader at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School, 12 dreams to be exact, each handwritten inside a cloud, every single one of them a lofty goal.

Her No. 1 dream was to be in the WNBA and her No. 12 dream was to have two Bernese mountain dogs. In between, she wrote that she wanted "to live in a huge mansion, to have three or four kids, to get married, to own a restaurant, to win the lottery, to be in a basketball movie, to be strong, to go (to college) on a basketball scholarship, to travel, travel across the whole world and to meet Maya Moore."

Kathleen Drey remembers assigning the project to her third-grade class but, to be honest, she didn't remember what Clark had written, not until ESPN showed Clark's third grade musings on the big screen during its live coverage of the women's NCAA tournament game between Iowa and West Virginia.

"It was really cool just to see her handwriting and have it back up there again because it brought back memories," said Drey. Memories of a tiny Clark with a feisty spirit.

"She was very competitive. She was always very, very smart. The passion and the drive, the tenacity that you see on the court, you could see on the playground every day," said Drey. "At recess, it didn't matter what sport was in season, she was out there with all the boys hustling and not afraid to tell them her opinion."

All of Clark's elementary teachers at St. Francis of Assisi, from first through sixth grade, said they knew she was going to be something. They knew she was going to go big places. They knew she was going to make a difference. They just had no idea how far she would go.

"You never dream that she's going to take it to this level," said Jill Westholm, who taught Clark sixth grade math and science. "But her drive and her passion? You definitely knew that she was going to be successful at whatever she chose to do."

Or whatever she dreamed to do. As the WNBA draft plays out Monday night, Clark who shattered college basketball records while at Iowa, is predicted to be the No. 1 pick for the Indiana Fever.

"We always want our students to try their best, right? Just do your best, but she wanted to be the best," said Westholm. "Not just her best, she wanted to be the best. Always, in everything she did."

'That's that same girl that I see looking back at me in my classroom'

Clark's elementary school teachers have gathered in the library at St. Francis of Assisi in Des Moines, Iowa, to talk about their former student. It's three days before the NCAA women's Final Four and they are all decked out in black and yellow for the Hawkeyes.

Even Clark's fourth grade teacher, Sara Doyle, who is a huge fan of Iowa's rival Iowa State, has put on her one Hawkeyes T-shirt.

When Clark came back to visit her old elementary school in May, Doyle went out and bought the shirt. She wore it underneath a sweater that was all buttoned up, walked up to Clark and said, "The only person I will wear a Hawkeyes shirt for," then ripped open her sweater, "is for you."

"I love following her journey," Doyle said. "I am all about it."

When Doyle watches Clark on the basketball court and sees the faces she makes, she can picture that same girl sitting in her fourth-grade classroom making those same faces, whether she wanted to do better, was frustrated with herself or she was pumped up that she did well.

"I have a hard time when I watch her play basketball because I'm like, 'Wait, that's that same girl that I see looking back at me in my classroom,'" Doyle said. "Not this superstar."

But Clark is a superstar -- and not one of these women sitting in the library are surprised at all.

'Yep, this is where she belongs, with the boys, playing up a year'

Diane Murphy first saw the intense competitiveness in Clark when she taught her in first grade. Murphy had her students do something called Rocket Math, a program with levels of math facts meant to individually better each student.

In other words, students were supposed to be competing against themselves.

"She took it to a whole new level and it became very competitive," said Murphy. "She wanted to beat everybody's level in the classroom; but that's just her competitiveness."

That drive quickly transferred over to sports.

"She just went toe to toe with all the boys," said Clark's second grade teacher Katie Tigges. "It didn't matter who she was playing against or what she was doing, whether academics or outside at recess."

Tigges remembers at her class' biography fair, Clark picked up a basketball and started spinning it on one finger, for a long, long time. Tigges' mother was there to help."And my mom was like, 'Oh my gosh, she's going to be something someday,'" said Tigges. "I was like, 'She sure is.'"

Someday came quicker than anyone realized when, in third grade, Clark began playing basketball on the boys' team. Not only that, but Clark was playing up a year. Westholm's son is a year older than Clark and was playing basketball, too.

"And I tell you what, they did not want to lose, but they did," Westholm said. "Honestly I was kind of like, 'OK, I have to see this. Why is she playing against the boys?' And when I saw her, I was like, 'Yep, this is where she belongs, with the boys, playing up a year.'"

'It's not, 'What if I miss this shot?' It's 'What if I make it?''

Clark's high school coach Kristen Meyer first saw her playing at an AAU tournament the spring of her eighth-grade year. During a break in competition, Meyer heard a voice. "Hi, I'm Caitlin Clark." Clark has never been one to be shy or intimidated.

"I don't think I've ever seen Caitlin embarrassed. Which, it sounds strange, but just the confidence she has in herself, but also she's willing to be goofy, to make mistakes, she's willing to look stupid or say something wrong and that alone separates her," said Meyer. "Because if you're not worried about making mistakes or what someone's going to think or what if I miss a shot or fail, it opens up to be able to do so much more."

And while playing for Meyer at Dowling Catholic High in West Des Moines, Clark did so much.

While she never won a state title, Clark ranks No. 4 in Iowa high school career scoring with 2,547 points. Her AAU team, the All-Iowa Attack, won the 2018 Nike GEYBL national championship and was runner-up in 2017 and 2019.

Clark has so many tools on the court, it's hard to narrow down what makes her stand out. But, Meyer said, she immediately stood out. "No. 1, her court vision and her ability to, somehow, take in everything that she sees and process it and make a decision and then act on it immediately," said Meyer. "Her reaction time leads to the ability to be able to have incredible passes and to just kind of know where teammates are going to be."

Her shooting ability and her ball handling are obvious and incredible, but her mindset is something truly rare, said Meyer.

"You know, she's a competitor. She loves a challenge and she's fearless. I think a lot of athletes, especially female athletes, get a little bit afraid or get held back by what could go wrong," she said. "Caitlin is the type that is always thinking, 'What could go right.?' It's not, 'What if I miss this shot?' It's 'What if I make it?'"

Clark had a maturity on the court that many high school girls don't. She was also sometimes a tough critic of her teammates because it took time for her to realize not everyone sees the game the way that she does. Not everyone is as driven, is as committed, is just able to process as quickly and physically be able to do everything either that she does or she wants them to do.

"I tell you what, there were times when she would give a compliment to a teammate and I swear they grew two inches," said Meyer. "Because she was both hard on teammates because she had high expectations but then she would recognize when they met those expectations."

But Clark was never as hard on anyone as she was on herself.

'Can I be Caitlin Clark?'

The day Clark turned the corner from being a great player to having superstar potential came after a major disappointment. Meyer said it was the summer between her sophomore and junior year of high school. That was the summer that Clark didn't make the USA team.Clark had made the team the summer before, but she broke her pinky while trying out the next year. Clark never blamed it on the pinky. Instead, she told Meyer she simply didn't play well enough to make the team.

"Obviously, it's a very highly competitive process, so it's nothing to be ashamed of by any means," said Meyer. "But I think that's probably the first time in her life that she was kind of told, 'You're not good enough for this.'"

Clark's drive went into a whole other gear. Her focus became razor sharp. Her work ethic catapulted.

"I think she just kind of thought, 'Well, I'm never going to have that happen again. You know, I'm going to be so good that they can't leave me off,'" said Meyer. "And it's not about being mad about it, but it's just she knew she had a higher ceiling and she wanted to kind of see how good she could get."

Monday night, as Clark's No. 1 dream on her third-grade list comes true, the world knows how good she became. What they don't know is just how much more greatness she has in her or what level she will take her game to in the WNBA.

Her former teachers want her to know a few things as she launches her professional basketball career.

"I hope she knows how much she has elevated the game for women everywhere," said Drey. "I just hope she knows that and recognizes that."

Doyle added: "I would say to her that we are so proud of her, but just stay true to who she is. Her drive, her motivation, her faithfulness, that is what's gotten her to this point. And I would say, keep that in your heart, know where you came from, know the people who love you. So no matter what big stage you go to, no matter how famous you are, stay true to your roots and know what got you to that point."

Tigges is in the middle of doing her class's biography fair now, the one where Clark stood spinning a basketball on her finger. And some of her students have asked, "Can I be Caitlin Clark?"

"It kind of gave me goosebumps because there's not a book about her right now, but someday there will be," she said. "And someday a kid in my class could be Caitlin Clark."

All of her teachers say the Clark people see being interviewed is the same person she's always been. She isn't putting on an act or putting on airs. She just wants to be the best.

"It's kind of a dream as a teacher to be able to know where your former students are. I wish I knew where all my former students were," Westholm said. "And to be able to see her reach her goal on the national stage, we get to follow her journey. And that's really exciting."

Seventy-five years ago this past week, Sam Snead won the Masters Tournament and became the first champion to receive one of Augusta National Golf Club’s green jackets.

Until he died in 2002 , the jacket was his to wear every time he returned to Augusta. These days, it is a sartorial symbol of how, beyond a freighted history and marvelous azaleas and golf’s geopolitical machinations and gallery roars that ripple from Amen Corner to the clubhouse, Augusta National is more enchanted by champions than most places.

Since the start of the month, Lottie Woad has captured the Augusta National Women’s Amateur. Eight children were named champions of a junior golf competition after playing at Augusta. More than 30 past Masters winners gathered for dinner to honor Jon Rahm , last year’s champion, and Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tom Watson hit tee shots to start this year’s tournament. Many of their brethren played afterward, because they are allowed to for life. On Sunday, Scottie Scheffler, who was already familiar with the locker room reserved for past champions, won the 88th Masters.

There may be no place in men’s golf where hope, dazzle and ambition are as abundant as Augusta.

But this past week, all of the possibilities seemed to be on greater display than usual. There was the solar eclipse on Monday, when fans peered skyward, just as Ben Crenshaw and Nick Faldo did here, too. Later on, Tiger Woods , 48 years old and two years removed from the last time he finished a major tournament, made his record 24th consecutive Masters cut. But he faded on Saturday.

Higher up the leaderboard during the third round, players like Ludvig Aberg, Nicolai Hojgaard, Max Homa and Xander Schauffele hunted for their debut major title, while Bryson DeChambeau, Collin Morikawa and Cameron Smith looked to build on the magic that had made them champions elsewhere not all that long ago. Scheffler occasionally stumbled, but on Sunday, he dominated and locked down his second Masters victory before the birth of his first child.

Golf enthusiasts often regard a trip to the Masters as the stuff of dreams. It certainly is for players. The Masters represents a shot at becoming one of those champions written into history, with the green jackets and the possibility of forever enchanting Augusta.

In second grade, Caitlin Clark wrote down her WNBA dreams. Now, they'll finally come true.

In second grade, Caitlin Clark wrote a note to herself, compiling her goals for the future.

"Get a basketball scholarship, play in the WNBA," Clark recalled the note saying.

On Monday, her dreams will come true: She was selected by the Indiana Fever as the No. 1 overall pick in the WNBA draft, launching her professional career in the sport she dominated for the last four years as an Iowa Hawkeye, sinking 3-pointers and breaking records .

"I think more than anything I’m just really excited," Clark told "TODAY" while spending the weekend in New York City, fresh off the NCAA championship game. She's trying to "enjoy every single second" of this "whirlwind" year.

But Clark knows starting in the WNBA will be a challenge — a "good challenge for me," she said, noting that she chose to end her college hoops career with one year of eligibility left to embark on "something new."

"I hope my game translates to the next level," said Clark, who broke the all-time scoring record in the NCAA this year. She expects there to be a learning curve when she takes the court in the pros, but she said she knows "there will be good vets around me that I’ll be able to lean on."

Having for years served as a talisman for Iowa, Clark said she's looking forward to relying on her future teammates and not having to carry the weight of the world on her shoulders all the time.

Even though high expectations aren't going to change as Clark enters the pros, "that's what you want" when you "want to be one of the best players in the world," she said.

She may well be on her way to becoming one of the world's top players, but none of it is an accident.

Those long 3s she's known for? "Those are shots, like, I practice and work on every single day," Clark said. "It’s not like I just take the court for a game and just start launching those.

"But I think always I’ve had confidence in myself," she said. "And so just carrying that and being confident in all the work I’ve put in in the moments and knowing that I’ve earned to be in this moment, that’s always kind of what I remind myself, is, you know, 'You’re not here by accident.' Like, it’s all the hard work that you put in. And that’s what led you to this."

Her hard work might also lead her to the Olympics this summer in Paris, where she could earn a spot on the U.S. women's basketball team to represent her country on the international stage.

Clark said it would "mean everything" to her to be on the team.

"That’s, like, one of my dreams as a kid growing up. You always want to be an Olympic gold medalist," she said.

'The reason you do it'

Aside from the multiple records broken on the court and the viewership records set in her games, Clark has been inspiring swarms of young girls — who show up courtside desperate for autographs or selfies — to launch their own basketball careers.

"I think that's, like, the reason you do it," Clark said.

"One, like, I love playing basketball. But, two, also getting to inspire the next generation," she continued. "I grew up loving basketball, loving soccer. Like, the people I idolized in my life were, you know, either professional women’s basketball players, professional soccer players, and that’s what I wanted to be growing up."

For Clark, understanding "how big of an impact that can have on a young girl’s life is super important. So I always try to make as much time as I can for them," she said. "And just to see them scream your name or have your jersey on, that’s something that never gets old."

When she was growing up, women's basketball was always on TV in Clark's house, she said. She said she always knew it "was really great," so it surprises her that so many people are "new to the sport."

Clark doesn't take offense, though. Instead, she teases newcomers, letting them know they're "late to the party."

"It's always been really good. There's always been so many good players," she said.

Clark thinks being able to play on a national stage, as well as social media and the introduction of the name, image and likeness policy in college sports — which allows collegiate athletes to make money from their personal brands — are all contributing to the rise of women's basketball.

"But I think the best thing is, like, they're here now," Clark said of the new fans. "Like, let's continue to bring them in and want them to keep coming back for more."

Clark said she has heard the rumors that season tickets for the Indiana Fever are selling fast and that other teams are moving their venues so more people can watch her play, but she sees that as only another win for the WNBA — and women's basketball — as a whole.

"I think it’s, you know, only going to help the league grow even more," Clark said. "And obviously it’s at a place where it’s been really good. But the more people we can bring into the league, whether they’ve just been college fans and now they can be college basketball fans and WNBA fans, will only help the league to grow."

In the days between closing out her college basketball career and turning pro, Clark took another opportunity to lift up women’s basketball in an appearance on “Saturday Night Live.”

In a cameo on the “Weekend Update” segment, she  called out host Michael Che  for dunking on women’s sports in the past. She also used the moment to mention all the women’s basketball greats who came before her.

Clark, who said she doesn’t get nervous for basketball games, said getting ready for “SNL” was “a little scary” and far more daunting than preparing for the  national championship game on April 7, when Iowa fell to South Carolina .

At the end of the show, she invited fellow Hawkeyes Kate Martin and Gabbie Marshall up onstage for goodbyes. They’re moments like sharing the “SNL” stage with her teammates or the moments she shares with her family in between games that Clark said she treasures most.

“I think it’s just the little moments that a lot of people in the public don’t get to see,” she said. “That’s kind of what means the most to me.”

Salman Rushdie says he had a dream about being attacked days before stabbing

The 76-year-old author said he did not want to attend the talk after dreaming of a man bearing down on him with a spear in an "amphitheatre" days before the event.

Sir Salman Rushdie has said he had a dream of a man trying to stab him days before he was attacked in 2022.

The author was stabbed several times during the attack , and suffered life-changing injuries including the loss of his right eye, moments before he was due to give a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution in New York state.

In his first major TV interview since the attack, the 76-year-old told Anderson Cooper on CBS programme 60 Minutes he did not want to attend the talk after dreaming of a man bearing down on him with a spear in an "amphitheatre" days before the event.

"I woke up and I was quite shaken," he said.

"I said to my wife, Eliza, 'You know I don't want to go' - because of the dream. And then I thought, 'Don't be silly, it's a dream'."

In 1989 Iran's then leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a fatwa calling for his death after the publication of his book The Satanic Verses, which many Muslims consider blasphemous.

The Indian-born British author, who said he had about "half a dozen serious assassination attempts" on his life, was due to speak about free speech before he was attacked.

"It felt like something coming out of the distant past and trying to drag me back in time, if you like, back into that distant past, in order to kill me," he said.

"I think he was just slashing. It was the half minute of intimacy between life and death. I was watching it [blood] spread and then thinking I was probably dying. It was quite matter of fact.

"I've not had a revelation except there is no revelation to be had."

'What's the lucky part?'

He continued: "One of the surgeons who had saved my life said to me: 'First you were really unlucky and then you were really lucky'.

"I said, 'What's the lucky part?' and he said, 'Well, the lucky part is that the man who attacked you had no idea how to kill a man with a knife'."

Sir Salman has now written about the attack in his new book, Knife: Meditations After An Attempted Murder, which is due to be published later this month.

He said he was initially reluctant to write the memoir: "It was the last thing I wanted to do.

"The only thing anyone knew about me was this death threat, but I had to write this, to focus on the elephant in the room.

"It then became a book I really wanted to write. Language is a way of breaking open the world. I don't have any other weapons."

A 'squat missile'

In the book Sir Salman does not name his alleged attacker - Hadi Matar, a 24-year-old man from New Jersey, who has pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial.

"I don't want his name in my book and I don't want him in my life," he said. "We had 27 seconds together [during the attack], I don't want to give him any more of my time."

Reading from the book , he described how he saw a "murderous shape rushing towards" him like a "squat missile".

On 21 April Sir Salman will discuss his book and the attack as part of a series of events for the Southbank Centre's Spring Literature and Spoken Word Season.

Sir Salman began his writing career in the early 1970s and won the Booker Prize in 1981 for his novel Midnight's Children, about the birth of modern India.

NPR suspends veteran editor as it grapples with his public criticism

NPR suspended senior editor Uri Berliner for five days without pay after he wrote an essay accusing the network of losing the public's trust and appeared on a podcast to explain his argument.

NPR has formally punished Uri Berliner, the senior editor who publicly argued a week ago that the network had "lost America's trust" by approaching news stories with a rigidly progressive mindset.

Berliner's five-day suspension without pay, which began last Friday, has not been previously reported.

Yet the public radio network is grappling in other ways with the fallout from Berliner's essay for the online news site The Free Press . It angered many of his colleagues, led NPR leaders to announce monthly internal reviews of the network's coverage, and gave fresh ammunition to conservative and partisan Republican critics of NPR, including former President Donald Trump.

Conservative activist Christopher Rufo is among those now targeting NPR's new chief executive, Katherine Maher, for messages she posted to social media years before joining the network. Among others, those posts include a 2020 tweet that called Trump racist and another that appeared to minimize rioting during social justice protests that year. Maher took the job at NPR last month — her first at a news organization .

In a statement Monday about the messages she had posted, Maher praised the integrity of NPR's journalists and underscored the independence of their reporting.

"In America everyone is entitled to free speech as a private citizen," she said. "What matters is NPR's work and my commitment as its CEO: public service, editorial independence, and the mission to serve all of the American public. NPR is independent, beholden to no party, and without commercial interests."

The network noted that "the CEO is not involved in editorial decisions."

In an interview with me later on Monday, Berliner said the social media posts demonstrated Maher was all but incapable of being the person best poised to direct the organization.

"We're looking for a leader right now who's going to be unifying and bring more people into the tent and have a broader perspective on, sort of, what America is all about," Berliner said. "And this seems to be the opposite of that."

Conservative critics of NPR are now targeting its new chief executive, Katherine Maher, for messages she posted to social media years before joining the public radio network last month.

He said that he tried repeatedly to make his concerns over NPR's coverage known to news leaders and to Maher's predecessor as chief executive before publishing his essay.

Berliner has singled out coverage of several issues dominating the 2020s for criticism, including trans rights, the Israel-Hamas war and COVID. Berliner says he sees the same problems at other news organizations, but argues NPR, as a mission-driven institution, has a greater obligation to fairness.

"I love NPR and feel it's a national trust," Berliner says. "We have great journalists here. If they shed their opinions and did the great journalism they're capable of, this would be a much more interesting and fulfilling organization for our listeners."

A "final warning"

The circumstances surrounding the interview were singular.

Berliner provided me with a copy of the formal rebuke to review. NPR did not confirm or comment upon his suspension for this article.

In presenting Berliner's suspension Thursday afternoon, the organization told the editor he had failed to secure its approval for outside work for other news outlets, as is required of NPR journalists. It called the letter a "final warning," saying Berliner would be fired if he violated NPR's policy again. Berliner is a dues-paying member of NPR's newsroom union but says he is not appealing the punishment.

The Free Press is a site that has become a haven for journalists who believe that mainstream media outlets have become too liberal. In addition to his essay, Berliner appeared in an episode of its podcast Honestly with Bari Weiss.

A few hours after the essay appeared online, NPR chief business editor Pallavi Gogoi reminded Berliner of the requirement that he secure approval before appearing in outside press, according to a copy of the note provided by Berliner.

In its formal rebuke, NPR did not cite Berliner's appearance on Chris Cuomo's NewsNation program last Tuesday night, for which NPR gave him the green light. (NPR's chief communications officer told Berliner to focus on his own experience and not share proprietary information.) The NPR letter also did not cite his remarks to The New York Times , which ran its article mid-afternoon Thursday, shortly before the reprimand was sent. Berliner says he did not seek approval before talking with the Times .

NPR defends its journalism after senior editor says it has lost the public's trust

Berliner says he did not get permission from NPR to speak with me for this story but that he was not worried about the consequences: "Talking to an NPR journalist and being fired for that would be extraordinary, I think."

Berliner is a member of NPR's business desk, as am I, and he has helped to edit many of my stories. He had no involvement in the preparation of this article and did not see it before it was posted publicly.

In rebuking Berliner, NPR said he had also publicly released proprietary information about audience demographics, which it considers confidential. He said those figures "were essentially marketing material. If they had been really good, they probably would have distributed them and sent them out to the world."

Feelings of anger and betrayal inside the newsroom

His essay and subsequent public remarks stirred deep anger and dismay within NPR. Colleagues contend Berliner cherry-picked examples to fit his arguments and challenge the accuracy of his accounts. They also note he did not seek comment from the journalists involved in the work he cited.

Morning Edition host Michel Martin told me some colleagues at the network share Berliner's concerns that coverage is frequently presented through an ideological or idealistic prism that can alienate listeners.

"The way to address that is through training and mentorship," says Martin, herself a veteran of nearly two decades at the network who has also reported for The Wall Street Journal and ABC News. "It's not by blowing the place up, by trashing your colleagues, in full view of people who don't really care about it anyway."

Several NPR journalists told me they are no longer willing to work with Berliner as they no longer have confidence that he will keep private their internal musings about stories as they work through coverage.

"Newsrooms run on trust," NPR political correspondent Danielle Kurtzleben tweeted last week, without mentioning Berliner by name. "If you violate everyone's trust by going to another outlet and sh--ing on your colleagues (while doing a bad job journalistically, for that matter), I don't know how you do your job now."

Berliner rejected that critique, saying nothing in his essay or subsequent remarks betrayed private observations or arguments about coverage.

Other newsrooms are also grappling with questions over news judgment and confidentiality. On Monday, New York Times Executive Editor Joseph Kahn announced to his staff that the newspaper's inquiry into who leaked internal dissent over a planned episode of its podcast The Daily to another news outlet proved inconclusive. The episode was to focus on a December report on the use of sexual assault as part of the Hamas attack on Israel in October. Audio staffers aired doubts over how well the reporting stood up to scrutiny.

"We work together with trust and collegiality everyday on everything we produce, and I have every expectation that this incident will prove to be a singular exception to an important rule," Kahn wrote to Times staffers.

At NPR, some of Berliner's colleagues have weighed in online against his claim that the network has focused on diversifying its workforce without a concomitant commitment to diversity of viewpoint. Recently retired Chief Executive John Lansing has referred to this pursuit of diversity within NPR's workforce as its " North Star ," a moral imperative and chief business strategy.

In his essay, Berliner tagged the strategy as a failure, citing the drop in NPR's broadcast audiences and its struggle to attract more Black and Latino listeners in particular.

"During most of my tenure here, an open-minded, curious culture prevailed. We were nerdy, but not knee-jerk, activist, or scolding," Berliner writes. "In recent years, however, that has changed."

Berliner writes, "For NPR, which purports to consider all things, it's devastating both for its journalism and its business model."

NPR investigative reporter Chiara Eisner wrote in a comment for this story: "Minorities do not all think the same and do not report the same. Good reporters and editors should know that by now. It's embarrassing to me as a reporter at NPR that a senior editor here missed that point in 2024."

Some colleagues drafted a letter to Maher and NPR's chief news executive, Edith Chapin, seeking greater clarity on NPR's standards for its coverage and the behavior of its journalists — clearly pointed at Berliner.

A plan for "healthy discussion"

On Friday, CEO Maher stood up for the network's mission and the journalism, taking issue with Berliner's critique, though never mentioning him by name. Among her chief issues, she said Berliner's essay offered "a criticism of our people on the basis of who we are."

Berliner took great exception to that, saying she had denigrated him. He said that he supported diversifying NPR's workforce to look more like the U.S. population at large. She did not address that in a subsequent private exchange he shared with me for this story. (An NPR spokesperson declined further comment.)

Late Monday afternoon, Chapin announced to the newsroom that Executive Editor Eva Rodriguez would lead monthly meetings to review coverage.

"Among the questions we'll ask of ourselves each month: Did we capture the diversity of this country — racial, ethnic, religious, economic, political geographic, etc — in all of its complexity and in a way that helped listeners and readers recognize themselves and their communities?" Chapin wrote in the memo. "Did we offer coverage that helped them understand — even if just a bit better — those neighbors with whom they share little in common?"

Berliner said he welcomed the announcement but would withhold judgment until those meetings played out.

In a text for this story, Chapin said such sessions had been discussed since Lansing unified the news and programming divisions under her acting leadership last year.

"Now seemed [the] time to deliver if we were going to do it," Chapin said. "Healthy discussion is something we need more of."
