PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) is the most sought-after academic qualification in India for students who have completed their master's courses like M.Sc., M.Tech, MBA, MCA, MPhil, M.A., M.Com, and others. The higher education system of India has expanded quite a lot in the past few years. With more and more students willing to study higher academic courses, the number of PhD candidates has also increased. It is estimated that after ten years, about 35% of all master's students in India will pursue a PhD. Candidates can obtain a PhD in their desired field if their area of research is relevant to their master's degree.

How to pursue Distance PhD in India?

As the name suggests, PhD is a doctoral academic course that offers students higher studies after they have completed their postgraduate course. The duration of this academic course is 3 years to 5 years. A PhD's final duration usually depends on the student's academic rigor and the university's decision. As it's a doctoral course, candidates have to perform academic research in their field of study. Students who don't wish to sit for highly competitive PhD entrance exams for admission to government universities/ colleges can opt to study PhD at private universities. Both these formats are not suited for everyone who wishes to do a PhD in India. For some people, especially working professionals, taking out time to attend classes is not possible. For them, a distance Ph.D. in India is the best option. Students don't have to participate in regular classes and lectures at the college/ university in this option. Most of the process is conducted online, and students only have to appear for semester examinations. The guidance for research is also carried out online, but students have to defend their academic thesis at the university/ college at the final submission.

So, if you have the dream of obtaining a PhD in India but cannot devote your time to attend regular classes, a distance PhD in India is your best option. You don't have to worry about the degree's value as it will be at par with the regular PhD degree in India. You will get similar job opportunities in the academic sector as well as the professional industry.

There are around 800 universities/ colleges in India that currently grant a PhD. The types of universities that offer PhD courses in India are mentioned below:

Central Universities (under the government of India).
State Universities (under respective state governments).
Private Universities.
Deemed to be Universities.
Institutes of National Importance.

For every type of university, there is a difference in fees and eligibility criteria. Anyway, as mentioned above, if your research is good, the university/ college will hardly matter. In simple words, the value of your PhD depends on your research and not the type of university you are pursuing it from.

Vardhman Mahaveer Open University (VMOU).
Netaji Subhas Open University (NSOU).
Madhya Pradesh Bhoj Open University (MPBOU).
Nalanda Open University (NOU).
Dr B.R. Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU).

The eligibility criteria for pursuing a distance PhD in India is similar to a standard PhD and is mentioned below:

You will need a valid bachelor's degree. It should be obtained from a government-recognized university.
You will have to hold a valid master's (postgraduate) degree like MA/ MSc/ MCom/ MTech/ MBA/ MPhil in a relevant discipline obtained from a government-recognized university.
In your master's degree, you should have scored at least 55% marks in the overall subjects.
If you are a reserved category student from SC/ ST/ OBC background, you will receive a relaxation of either 5% or 10% in the required marks. This depends on the college/ university.
You will have to clear a PhD entrance test.
Some universities/ colleges in India may require the applicant to possess work experience in a relevant field.

The average tuition fee for a correspondence PhD PhD in India is less than the regular PhD course in India. It ranges from about INR 5,000 to INR 50,000 per semester, depending on the university/ college.

UGC (University Grants Commission) does not approve Distance PhD courses in India. The UGC released the circular containing this information in 2017, and it stated that the PhD degrees that have been granted by distance education mode would no longer be recognized. Therefore, only full-time PhD degrees and part-time Ph.D. degrees will be approved as valid PhD degrees in India. Students who want to pursue Correspondence PhD in India can now opt for UGC Approved Part-Time PhD Programs in India. Instead of a PhD in Computer Science through distance education, they can opt for Part-time courses in computer science, Management, law, and other programs.

A doctor of Philosophy is commonly abbreviated as a Ph.D. It is a higher level of education—students who have completed their master’s degree at any accredited university. Students who want to become experts in a specific field can pursue a Ph.D. in that program. Students must pass a national or university-level entrance exam before enrolling in a Ph.D. program.

It is a research-based doctorate program that attracts students who are interested in in-depth and lengthy studies. This is a three-year research and thesis course available in all streams, with students able to enroll in topics related to the arts, science, or commerce.

Ph.D. Distance Learning Admission Process-

The Ph.D. program is a doctorate-level program. It is possible to study it for three to six years. The Ph.D. program fee varies by institution across the country.

This course has a three-year duration. It is divided into six semesters.

The aim of PhD program in a multi-disciplinary area of public health is to provide training to enhance professional abilities of scholars in research, problem solving, and critical thinking to address public health issues and establish them as thought leaders in public health.

Categories of PhD Students

PhD students will be admitted under following categories:

Regular Applicants with mandatory funding support/ grant/ fellowship for whom minimum residency will be 3 years .

Sponsored A student in this category may either be sponsored by a recognized industrial R&D organization, academic institution (universities/colleges), government organization including PSUs and autonomous bodies, reputed industries (as may be recognized by this Institute) or self-sponsored for doing research at the Institute. The Institute will not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. Prospective applicants applying under ‘Sponsored Category’ with NOC from their employer w.r.t fulfilling all the required conditions of coursework and minimum required residency may be considered irrespective of the funding arrangement between the candiate and their employer. Such candidates are expected to arrange their own funding for the research activities and sustenance. The minimum residency under this category will be 6 months.

Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification

Candidates with a consistently good academic record having Master’s degree in Public Health, any streams of Sciences, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics (STEAM), Social Sciences, Medical, Dentistry and allied fields, AYUSH (Alternative System of Medicine in India), Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Nursing and Veterinary science, Demography, Nutrition, Social Work, Law, Business Administration or any other relevant areas.

Other Essential Criteria

Candidates must have fellowship/scholarship or project funding support (assured for at least 3 yrs) while applying under regular category .
Minimum 2 years of relevant job experience is must while applying under sponsored category .

PhD Duration

Minimum of 3 years and a maximum of 6 years for both the categories – regular and sponsored.

Selection Process

Selection will be based on an interview by the selection committee. During interview, shortlisted applications may present their previous past experience and research idea using slides (max 5 slides) in 5-7 mins, which will be followed by Q & A by selection committee.

PhD Distance Education?: A Doctor of Philosophy degree is the topmost academic certification by an academic institution. Several institutions offer PhD degree distance modes as well. The eligibility qualification is a postgraduate master’s degree in the concerned discipline from a recognized university. The application process takes place in 2024 through an entrance test and an interview. Some universities and colleges such as IGNOU Birla Institute of Technology and Science Pilani, and KSOU Karnataka Open University provide a variety of PhD specializations in various subjects through distance mode. The duration of the degree is 3-6 years maximum, and the fee structure is between Rs. 50,000-2,00,000 .

The curriculum includes an extensive type of research under the supervision of a guide and culminates in the preparation of a research doctoral thesis. The employment opportunities are in academia and research areas or in high-level careers in the industries. The salary range depends on the type of job and years of working experience. A PhD degree by distance mode is a useful and beneficial medium of conducting research activity for people who are working. The only drawback is that it should be done highly motivated by the candidate and with good skills in time management.

Is a distance PhD valid in India?

Ph.D. distance education is not valid in India. Classes in this course consist of theoretical as well as practical training, which is not possible to conduct in a distance learning mode. Therefore, UGC does not allow any university to offer this doctorate-level program via open and distance Learning mode.

Ph.D. Course Highlights

Note: The UGC-DEB has not yet approved Ph.D. distance education in India because learning is based on hands-on experience. So, a Ph.D. gained through distance learning is not valid. This article aims to provide knowledge.

A Ph.D. course is stated as the highest level, of course, and aims at providing students with the ultimate level of discipline. Students who have passed their master’s level education from a recognized institution or university can apply for admission into a Ph.D. distance education course.

Candidates who wish admission to this program must have earned at least a 55% grade point average in any PG or Master course from an accredited university. For admission, applicants must take a UGC or university entrance exam. After earning their doctorate, students will have many professional opportunities available, including government jobs, entrepreneurial jobs, consultant jobs, research associate jobs, and many more.

In this course, generally considered a research-based program, PhD students gain skills and knowledge in research and technical areas.

PhD Distance Education Admission

UGC doesn’t recognize any university offering a Ph.D. program in distance learning mode in India (As we already mentioned above) because it is a research-level program. Students can pursue this program only in a regular mode of learning. The admission criteria are given in the below section.

The Ph.D. program duration is three years. However, the minimum duration of the Ph.D. programs differs between 3 and 6 years . The doctoral-level program allows applicants to boost their academic profile with available branches including humanities, commerce, management, education, science, and more.

When applying to Ph.D. programs offered online, applicants must have a master’s degree at the very least. A minimum score of 55% is required to be awarded the master’s degree. To be accepted into Ph.D. programs offered through remote education, students must pass the Ph.D. entrance test, also known as the PET. Tests at the state and national levels, such as the UGC NET and the CSIR NET, are considered national exams, and applicants who pass these exams are free from taking university admission exams.

Eligibility for a PhD in Distance Education

Candidates who have passed the last semester of M.PHIL with a minimum score of 50% from any known and approved university in India are allowed to apply for this course.

It is the maximum level of education; there are no courses to opt for after Ph.D.

To get admission to a Ph.D., a master’s degree in India is a must in the chosen subject. In some institutes, there are entrance tests that have to be passed to get admission. In the final year of graduation, candidates can undergo the NET (National Eligibility Test) and be admitted to the program.

For engineering students, a valid GATE result card is needed for admission to Ph.D. Those candidates who are toppers at the universities in BE or BTech can get direct admission to the program.

PhD Distance Education Fees

The students can check the Doctor of Philosophy average fee range of INR 1,50,000–INR 2,00,000 per year. The fee varies according to the Specialization chosen by the applicant.

Duration of PhD Programme

It takes a minimum of three years to complete a PhD through distance education. There are six semesters in the course in order to provide an in-depth learning experience in the desired area of specialization.

PhD Admission Process

The process for getting into the PhD programme can be done online or offline. You can also apply for a PhD in India through the website or by going to the college’s admission office in person. The general steps for getting a PhD admission are listed below:

Madhya Pradesh Bhoj Open University Ph.D. Distance Education

The MPBOU proposes the Ph.D. program at 55% in master’s and clearing the entrance examination conducted by the university.

Dr. BR Ambedkar Open University Ph.D. Distance Education

Candidates may apply to the Ph.D. program under Dr. BR Ambedkar Open University after acquiring a minimum percentage of 55 % in master’s and clearing the entrance test conducted by the university.

Amity University Ph.D. Distance Education

Amity University’s directorate of distance education is a branch of Amity University through which it offers distance education at the Ph.D. level. The university conducts entrance tests at the university level, and if any students have passed the NET and JRF exams, the university offers scholarships to such students.

Ph.D. Distance Education Application Form 2024?

The application form for admission to the Ph.D. program has been released by various universities. Candidates who are interested in taking admission to this program in a regular mode of learning can apply for admission before the last date announced by their desired university.

While students looking for admission to this programme in distance mode need to drop their idea. Because no one university conducts admission to the Ph.D. programme in distance mode.

To be admitted, students must first register and submit all the necessary documents. If the wrong application form is not corrected by the last correction date, it will not be accepted, and the admission will be considered canceled. Students from the general category pay an application fee of INR 600, and students from the SC/ST category pay an application fee of INR 350.

How to Apply for PhD?

Candidates seeking admission should register and apply online by logging in.
Registration guidelines can be found on the university’s website.
Candidates need to submit only one application. For admission under special reservations, candidates should also enclose the special reservation forms and certificates shown in Annexures I, II, III, IV, and V as per the instructions given in the Eligibility Criteria.

Downloaded online applications must be returned with all attachments and payment details, either in person, by registered mail, or by speed or registered post, to the address in the online application.

PhD Entrance Exam 2024

The mode of examination is online, and it has a duration of 3 hours. The registration fee for General or Unreserved category candidates is INR 1100.

The test is conducted by the national testing agency in the month of June. CSIR NET is a computer-based test. As a result of achieving a good score in the CSIR NET, candidates will have a better chance of getting accepted into a Ph.D. program. The application fee for CSIR NET is INR 1,000 and it has to be paid online. The online deposit mode is available for the purpose of making deposits. The exam has a three-hour time limit, which is 180 minutes long.

IGNOU PhD Entrance Exam

Students seeking a Ph.D. program in IGNOU have to face an entrance exam. Students have to face 100 questions each with four marks 50% of questions will be about Research Methodology and 50% questions about Specific Subjects. The Ph.D. entrance test has a total of 400 marks. Approximately three hours and 180 minutes will be allocated to the IGNOU Ph.D. entrance exam.
