Drug and illicit substance use among adolescents and the youth is a rising global health concern. In Zimbabwe, this problem has also been increasing in magnitude, with reports indicating that the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the growth of the problem. Decisively dealing with the problem requires an understanding of the contributory factors from all significant stakeholders’ perspective. We qualitatively explored the contributory factors to drug and substance use among the adolescents and youths in Zimbabwe from a significant stakeholders’ perspective. We conducted three focus group discussions with relevant stakeholders to reach saturation point. Four themes emerged on enabling factors, namely idleness among the youths and the adolescents, increased access to illicit substances, low community awareness of the signs of drug and substance use leading to delayed identification, and absence of social workers in the communities. Four themes emerged as possible strategies to curb drug an...

The study examined the causes, nature and effects of substance abuse among adolescents in Mabelreign Community. It also identified mechanisms and strategies that can be adopted to reduce substance abuse. Methodologically adopted; survey research design, stratified random sampling size of 50 respondents and questionnaires and interview schedule were data gathering tools. The study revealed an increase of substance abuse among adolescents in secondary schools, colleges and universities due to various reasons, but the researcher hypothesized ‘the legal majority age’ as the core cause which makes it difficult to manage adolescents. Hence, this needs to be revisited since the challenge robbed off golden fortunes. The researchers recommend that parents should be role models at home, work while at educational institutions discipline has to be applied. Legislators should craft laws governing accessibility, use and marketing of substances and emphasizing age restrictions to certain types of ...

Background The church and other religious-affiliated organizations have promising yet underexplored potential to provide social support services for young people recovering from substance abuse in communities where drug and substance rehabilitation services are limited. This study aimed to establish the barriers and facilitators of accessing psychosocial support, the role of the church, and strategies to promote access to psychosocial support for youths recovering from drug and substance abuse. Methods This was a qualitative cross-sectional study, and semi-structured interviews of 18 church-going youths and three youth pastors were conducted in eastern Zimbabwe. Data were collected using recorded telephone interviews. Data were transcribed and analyzed using the thematic network analysis technique of producing basic themes, which build into organizing themes. The article will seek to explore the extent at which drugs had influenced young minds and the role that should be played by parents of people who are affected by drugs specially focusing on the young age starting from secondary and it also worsen at the university level. Drugs had been the small letter god being worshipped by the young age and used for various purposes such as pleasure, let go of the past and to discover youth’s time. One should note that Drugs had penetrated Africa and is the fastest growing sector which needs government to woke up before it’s too late. The World Health Organisation, WHO (1969) defines drug abuse as the persistent or sporadic excessive drug use inconsistent with or unrelated to acceptable medical practice. Drug abuse is the excessive use of drugs. The University of Maryland Medical Centre concurs with the above definitions that drug abuse is the recurrent use of illegal drugs or the misuse of prescriptions or over the counter drugs with negative consequences. These consequences may involve problems at work, school, and home or in interpersonal relationships.

In this survey a total of 2,783 secondary school students of both sexes, mean age 15.5 years, from randomly selected schools in both rural and urban areas of Zimbabwe were studied using a self report questionnaire. The results strongly indicated that drug use was quite prevalent among the students. The main drugs involved, in descending order, were: alcohol, tobacco, inhalants (solvents), amphetamines and cannabis. Others included mandrax, tranquilisers, sedatives and the hallucinogen mudzepete. No students reported use of heroin, cocaine, LSD or opium. Drug use increased with age and involved both sexes, the problem being more acute in the urban schools. A differential use pattern is revealed, implying valuable information for targeted prevention efforts.

Illegal drug and substance use has lately become an enormous social problem in this modern era of globalization, being prevalent in both developed and developing countries. Illegal drug use has been treated as a masculine phenomenon while the lived experiences of women who use drugs were swept under the carpet. This article uses a mixed-methods research approach to explore the causes and effects of illegal drug use among women in Zimbabwe. A total of 180 respondents were sampled using simple random methods from two provinces, Harare and Mutare. In addition to 180 women who used drugs, ten key informants were purposively sampled for in-depth interviews. A number of determinants were established that push women into illegal drug use activities. These include poverty, unemployment, peer pressure and commercial sexual transactions. The study established that women who use drugs are exposed to various harmful practices after intoxication. There were reported cases of violence, exposure t...
