I have helped applicants to programs in Construction Management from all over the world. I have especially enjoyed working on behalf of students from the Middle East, particularly the UAE, Dubai and Abu Dhabi, where construction is on the world's cutting edge. I have a special interest in historical Muslim architecture, creativity, and I am imminently qualified to make your statement highly professional.

The Personal Statement of Purpose in Construction Management, Masters, MS, MSC, PHD. Building a New World from the ground up! I take special delight in helping creative people gain admission to graduate programs in Construction Management.

Many applicants that I have worked with in the area of Construction Management have been from the Middle East where some of today’s most ambitious projects are taking place, especially in Dubai. I very much enjoy learning about these cutting edge projects; and I do research on your behalf concerning the state-of-the-art in construction management in your area of specialty. I also like to visit the web site of the program to which you are applying, before I draft your statement, so as to make it as effective as possible for that particular program. I invite you to fill out my  Online Interview Form soon so that I can get started!

Construction Management  has the potential to be especially noble work. According to the World Bank, for example, educating all children worldwide will require the construction of 10 million new classrooms in more than 100 countries by 2015. At the same time, millions of existing classrooms are in serious need of repair and refurbishment. I would like to encourage designers and architects to partner with students and teachers to envision the classroom of the future.

Another special interest that I have in this area deals with the way in which buildings are a major source of global demand for energy and materials that produce by-product greenhouse gases (GHG). The raw resource extraction, manufacturing, transportation, construction, usage, and end-of-life stages of building products each generate significant GHG emissions. Slowing the growth rate of GHG emissions and then reversing it is the key to addressing climate change and keeping global average temperature below 2°C above pre-industrial levels. In this way, it is clear that construction management has a great deal of potential to contribute, especially over the long term, to healing our environment.

In a rapidly growing urban world, slums and informal settlements provide shelter for a sixth of the planet’s population and unless effective action is taken they are likely to become the most common form of dwelling on earth by 2030. Parallel to this lies another inconvenient truth that architecture as a profession is affecting no more than 5% of what is built every year around the world. I feel strongly that Construction Management professionals have extremely important roles to play in society, even in politics as we face inevitable urban challenges.

The Humanitarian Side of Construction Management

Construction Managers are in high demand all over the world where disasters have occurred and major rebuilding is necessary.

Michael Collins is a good example. We found his story on redr.org.uk, in their news section. Check it out. Micheal is the Program Manager for an international NGO working on a construction capacity building training project in Sumatra, Indonesia. Michael and his team assist homeowners living in earthquake prone regions to reconstruct their home so they meet earthquake resistance standards, train local engineers, builders and technical college students.

Darren Mort is another great example from redr.org.uk. He is actually a civil engineer, but taught Construction Project Management and Environmental Management in Construction to 4 th year engineering students in Uganda, when completing a Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) program, but he’s also worked for Kampala University, as the Operations Manager for a local road contractor; done a seven-month placement in the Maldives, as Deputy Project Manager for the British Red Cross Society on their tsunami recovery project and been responsible for managing a $11m contract for 250 houses and the development of management processes for a $22m island project to ensure safe water supply, sanitation, power supply and correct construction on Vilufushi island. Darren has always been interested in the international side of engineering and his most recent work has been spent as a volunteer in Tanzania as a Site Engineer for school construction projects. In the past, he’s also worked in Albania, Romania, Croatia and Turkey for Bechtel. Working abroad could also help you get humanitarian construction management work.

Save the Children are currently advertising a Construction Manager position on their website savethechildren.net. Save the Children is the world’s leading independent organization for children’s welfare, and this role includes providing technical input, construction management skills and capacity building efforts to their construction team. Save the Children are looking for a Construction Manager with a Masters in a related field, prior experience of working within complex country programs in an emergency response or fragile state and experience managing a team of international and national staff, among other experience.

The Halo Trust, the world’s largest humanitarian demining NGO, is also seeking a Construction Manager with a minimum of 2 years’ experience in construction/engineering management projects to work in projects in Afganistan, Angola, Cambodia, Somaliland, DRC, Mozambique, Georgia, Central African Republic, Cote D’Ivoire. You should also be able to speak and write French.

The UN frequently also requires Construction Managers to work in various locations around the world. At the time of writing, the UNOPS, or United Nations Office for Project Services in Kenya has a vacancy for a Construction Manager to work supporting infrastructure development of health facilities and helping apply green building technology inputs. The position involves a lot of travel around Kenya, being responsible for all building and civil construction projects, as well as many other complex management tasks. You will need a minimum of 12 years’ work experience, with 8 of those years in building construction and maintenance works, etc., plus a Master’s degree in Engineering or equally relevant professional qualification. A similar position is also available, where you will work in Haiti, but French is required. Have a look at the unjobs.org website for more detail and other available positions.

These jobs are some examples of where you might like to end up in the future, or perhaps you already have a lot of experience working abroad and a Masters is the final piece you’d like to press into your career puzzle.

Master’s Programs

You have such a wide range of options available to you when it comes to Masters programs, especially if you’re happy to study abroad (which may also give you the chance to learn a second language – another excellent skill to add to your resume).

There are few different paths you could take. Studying International Construction Management is a straight forward and obvious choice. The Nanygan Technological University of Singapore, runs a program specially designed to enable graduate engineers, architects and other professionals from related fields to expand their decision-making horizons and prepare them to work with the parameters and risks involved in international construction projects. Modules include construction law, project financing, international construction and marketing, and IT in construction.

The University of Florida offers a similar course, a self-paced Masters in International Construction Management online with modules like advanced international project safety management, high performance green building, construction ecology and metabolism, and principles of international sustainable construction.

The University of Leeds, UK, has a M.Sc. International Construction Management and Engineering course at their institution, to prepare you for the challenges of the changing and increasingly global construction industry, with a focus on the financial, management and planning aspects of the project life cycle. You will study compulsory modules like applied construction management and whole life asset management, and will be able to choose from self-elective modules like strategic management in construction and the deterioration and maintenance of pavements.

If you’d like to study in English in China, the Tsinghua University in Beijing runs a M.Sc. in International Construction and Project Management, where you’ll have the chance to learn about how Chinese enterprises operate and deliver projects, as well as develop a more global vision of contemporary issues relevant to international construction.

If you’re interested in the sustainable building movement and applying that knowledge abroad, there’s a M.Sc. in Sustainable Construction Project Management at Plymouth University in the UK. There, you’ll build the specialist knowledge and skills to enable you to excel as a sustainability-aware construction project manager, and study modules like sustainable construction technology and innovations, value and risk management, and sustainable project management. While this may not be the most economical of programs, the UK has an excellent international reputation when it comes to their educational institutions.

The University of Newcastle in Australia has recently launched a Master’s in Disaster Preparedness and Reconstruction, giving students the unique ability to work on approaches to building disaster resilient structures in context-specific situations. The professional application of these disaster management skills and techniques creates graduates that are a valuable resource to local government bodies, NGOs, and national and international organizations involved in disaster management. This year-long program will cover post-disaster project management, disaster mitigation and sustainable re-development, the economics of and for disaster management and professional practice for disaster management, plus other fascinating and unique modules.

    DREW POULTER

Why did you choose to enroll at USC? I chose to enhance my technical knowledge and to have the opportunity to work on far-reaching projects around the world. I am grateful for my experience at USC, one that, in my opinion, is second to none. The network within USC encourages students to interact with each other which, in turn, builds their confidence and evolves their academic and emotional growth.

What's an experience at USC that you'll never forget? One of my most memorable experiences at USC was traveling to Greece for the Innovation in Engineering Design for Global Challenges where we worked in teams to develop and implement products intended to help refugees living in camps around the world. This experience changed my perspective on the world and opened my eyes to the suffering and determination of refugees who were trying to better their lives and their children’s lives. It was life changing and I am very fortunate to have been a part of this course.

What advice would you give future Viterbi students? My advice to future Viterbi students is to engage with your classmates and stay involved on campus even if you're working full time. I worked full time during my two years at USC and during my second year, I made it a priority to become more involved on campus. One of my favorite experiences of my USC Viterbi was participating in the Spark competition in Reno. During the competition, we were given a set of issues on a real construction project and instructed to design creative solutions to remedy the problems within 18 hours. We prepared for this competition for months and were guided by two senior-level project managers who took the time to carefully prepare us for this competition. The extraordinary experience was a valuable lesson in teamwork and staying focused as we multi-tasked towards our common goal.

My interest in art, design and construction began as early as during my secondary school days. In 2006, as a 15-year old kid, I visited Delhi and Agra with my parents and was fascinated by the beautiful structures of monuments like the TajMahal in Agra, and Humayun’s Tomb and Red Fort in Delhi. The intricate carvings, the apparently seamless construction, and the imposing pillars and walls made a deep impact on me. Thereafter, I began paying more attention to buildings and structures around me, appreciating some, criticizing others, even improvising a few in my head, and with each passing year, my craving to produce beautiful buildings to shape the skyline of modern cities influenced me to be an Architect.

The next few years gave me a thorough foundation of knowledge in architecture and design. With deep interest I studied Design, Construction, Estimation and Specification, and Building Services   that were part of the curriculum. I especially enjoyed working on a real life residential project, which was my first real life project under the guidance of Prof.Akshat Garg, during my third year that familiarized me with all phases of the construction process. During my final year, as my thesis project I have designed Indo-Bangladesh Border Haat(place where both countries sell their products)which allowed me to study about various sustainable materials and design and also help me to learn about the project estimation in detail.

Apart from academics, I was actively involved in several committees and participated in many students’ design competitions during my undergraduate studies that infused in me a sense of leadership and team spirit. In Arch venture2011, an intra college design competition I received 2nd and 3rd prizes in two design events. I had also participated in Transparence 2014 design competition, conducted by Ethos IGBC (Indian Green Building Council) in a team of two, where I lead our team till semi final round from among 250 groups. As team leader and Union President of NASA (National Association of Students of Architecture) and ZO-NASA for our college during 2011-2013, I had organized and participated in several seminars and workshops and closely interacted with enthusiastic youngsters and eminent architects which helped me to gain new concepts and ideas about different topics. Among the various seminars I attended one seminar in particular, held during ZO-NASA2013, and organized by Sunderdeep College of Architecture on Construction Management, made me realize the significance of management during construction. Attending this seminar boosted my already strong desire to implement the fundamental principles of Planning, Design and Construction, and motivated me to seek a formal management course in Construction.

My internship at “Vaastu-Mandala” a renowned architectural consultancy firm during 4thyear of under graduation (2013-2014) was another strong motivator. During the yearlong practical training I received there, I continued to add to my design knowledge through projects related to planning a three-storied residential building, a commercial building, and a hospital. The internship was an important learning experience enriching my skills in site planning and detailing as well as electrical, plumbing, and working drawings that enabled me to resolve real-time problems and understand the hands-on actual execution of every project. It was during this period I realized that the term “Construction” is not restricted to only men, materials, and machines, but also refers to efficient and effective management to complete the entire project from conception to realization.

After graduating in 2015, I got the opportunity to work at Trestle Consulting in Bangalore under Ar. Jitendra Jhangiani, where I am currently involved in several international projects like a 120-bedded hospital in Iraq, national projects like a 250-bedded hospital in Coimbatore, interior designing of a restaurant in Bangalore, to name a few. Under Ar. Jhangiani’s guidance, I have learned how to execute the project single-handedly from the conception stage to the finalization of construction, adhering to strict deadlines, and how to maintain proper coordination with multiple consultants and vendors.I have performed a variety of tasks ranging from drafting and designing to site supervising, and have grown to understand the importance of management in the process of construction. This experience has greatly increased my confidence to work in this field of construction and given a direction for my interest in management. As an architect, I was able to deal with the design aspect of the process of construction of a building, but beyond that I could feel the lacunae, especially when it came to actual management.

A Masters in Construction Management will give me exposure to the multidimensional facets of the construction business. It will broaden my perspective to include aspects like contract management and equip me with the knowledge and skills to be a successful manager in the future. Incidentally, the need to fill top managerial positions in the construction industry is on a steep rise, which has reinforced my decision to pursue a research-oriented career in construction management.

The course curriculum of Master in Construction Management at the Colorado State University is tailor-made for me and fittingly matches my pursuits. I eagerly want to learn subjects like Construction Estimating, Sustainable practices in design and construction, Construction Project Scheduling and cost control through this course and also aspire to be part of the research program on sustainable development, design and construction under the expert mentorship of Professor Rodolfo Valdes-Vasquez. I believe that being associated with such recognized faculty will serve as an ideal opportunity to acquire knowledge about the intricacies of this field.

With the demand for constructions ever increasing right from medieval age, my eventual goal is to pursue a research career in construction management by gaining experience in leadership and team building. After graduating, I want to become a certified construction manager and want to gain experience on commercial and institutional building with a focus on integrating sustainable and eco-friendly design concepts into building. I therefore sincerely look forward to being part of the illustrious academic community of Colorado State University for a challenging and yet fulfilling journey.

Construction Management sounds like an unusual discipline at first, but did you know it is a rapidly growing field? Construction management is the process of overseeing and coordinating a construction project from start to finish. It involves multiple tasks, such as planning, scheduling, budgeting, and managing resources. Construction managers are responsible for ensuring that projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.

Construction management is a growing field with various opportunities for international students. The global construction industry is booming, with $10 Trillion spent every year on construction projects. Your SOP should dive into relevant life experiences, academic and professional background (if applicable), career goals, co-curricular activities, volunteering/community involvement, and more.

Also Recommended to read: Masters in Construction Management in the UK

When writing an SOP for a Master of Science in Construction Management (MSCM) program, you should focus on the following:

Introduction:

You can include the following pointers while writing the first paragraph.

  • How did you develop an interest in your undergraduate major (civil engineering, architecture, design, or environmental engineering)?
  • What is the most potent experience that led you to choose this field?
  • Devise your introduction with an attention-grabbing experience evocating your journey into the field.

Note: Avoid cliched school and childhood events. The focus should be on recent experiences.

Second Paragraph:

In this paragraph, you have to funnel down the broad interests in your undergraduate major to how you discovered your passion for construction management.

  • What inspired or triggered this passion?
  • Discuss relevant undergraduate experiences and/or courses and how these led you to develop an interest in Construction Management.

For example, how you stumbled into “estimation and costing” within the broad spectrum of your civil engineering curriculum, leading to a pivoted curiosity toward construction management. Other relevant courses include construction/building technology, materials, and structural engineering.

  • You can also discuss the projects you worked on or relevant co-curricular experiences worth sharing. Make sure that these experiences align with your interest in Construction Management.

Third Paragraph:

Have you faced any setbacks in your academics? You can mention that if you just made the cut or have fewer scores.

  • Have you faced any unique challenges or setbacks that have redefined your perspectives or interests?
  • How did you overcome these challenges, and what is/are the positive outcomes of these experiences?
  • Reflecting on the lessons from these experiences is essential to underscore your resilience.

Fourth Paragraph:

Universities are interested in knowing more than just academics. So, showcase your extracurricular activities, hobbies, social work, volunteering, and so forth in this paragraph. You can also discuss workshops or certifications you have taken to upgrade your skills.

However, it’s essential not to make your SOP in construction management an elaborate version of your resume.

Fifth Paragraph

If you have work experience, reflect on it here. But, if you do not have work experience, you can discuss your internship experiences, reflecting on your specific learnings and take-aways.

Internship experiences related to construction management play a significant role in a sample SOP for construction management.

Further to this discussion, identify a knowledge gap and or the need for you to go for a master’s in construction management.

Your conclusion should be as engaging as the other paragraphs of an SOP. Let’s check the pointers that can be unveiled.

  • Define your short-term and long-term goals.
  • How will the master’s program from a specific University help you achieve these goals?
  • How does the program align with your areas of interest?

Justify your reasons for the choice of the University and the program.

  • What capabilities equip you to contribute to the University?
  • What activities, clubs, sports, student associations, groups, etc., piqued your interest?

Sign off with your expectations from the program and how you look forward to receiving, assimilating, and contributing to new knowledge at the University.

Sample Project Management Personal Statement (UT Austin)

construction management masters personal statement

by Talha Omer, MBA, M.Eng., Harvard & Cornell Grad

In personal statement samples by field.

The following essay was written by an applicant admitted to UT Austin’s Construction Engineering and Project Management program with 75% scholarship on tuition fee.

With over three years of work experience in a civil engineering and design firm, the applicant currently works with AECOM, a top infrastructure consulting firm. This essay will help you get some ideas on how to draft a great personal statement for a top graduate school like UT Austin.

Sample Personal Statement UT Austin in Project Management

I belong to a family of civil engineers. I have been observing the affiliation of my father and elder brother with construction activities since I was a kid, so it was only natural for me to get into this field. After completing my bachelor’s in civil engineering, I secured a job in the government sector. However, as I write this statement while concatenating my undergraduate studies with fifteen months of hands-on experience in construction management, I realize that the higher education system of my country lacks focus on academics and research in construction engineering and project management. Also, there are few or no opportunities to build a comprehensive skill set as a construction management professional. Therefore, I wish to pursue my higher studies in Construction Engineering and Project Management at the University of Texas at Austin.

My four years in undergraduate studies opened a whole new world to me, just as exciting as I had imagined. My favorite course was “Construction Management.” Through this course, I learned the fundamentals of how construction projects are managed top down during the feasibility, design, execution, and commissioning phases. I also learned how materials, manpower, and machinery are managed efficiently without compromising the quality, safety, and environment. However, because there were no faculty members with a doctorate in management studies, the research interests of my school were focused only on structures, geo-tech, and hydraulics. Therefore, I could not quench my curiosity to explore this domain beyond the course contents by pursuing my final year of research in construction management.

Soon after my graduation, my good grades and leadership experience enabled me to be in the top 5% of the graduating class. As a result, I received a job offer in a prestigious government department. In the government sector, I was hired by South Korean consultants for the project management of a state-of-the-art kidney and liver institute in the heart of the country. It is a 1500-bed hospital, research center, and medical university spread over 100 hectares. This opportunity of working with Korean colleagues enabled me to learn construction management from the viewpoint of two contrasting construction industries. My South Korean colleagues used to discuss with me at length how various practices are done differently and more efficiently in South Korea than in my country. As an assistant engineer, I worked on assignments ranging from scheduling, costing, safety, and quality control under the guidance of a veteran in hospital construction – Mr. B. H. Lee.

Working with the Project Management Consultants (P.M.C.), I had the opportunity to practice and learn project management skills in a true sense. I prepared the standard formats and operating procedures for collecting progress data from all stakeholders. I identified the Key Performance Indicators, which were understandable even for non-technical people. The compiled progress reports were, in turn, presented to the top management, including the Heads of the States. I also prepared a comprehensive documentation control guideline for the quality control of the project. Although I had no prior knowledge of all the types of documents that would ever be produced in the project, I managed to identify them by holding extensive meetings with the consultants, contractors, and stakeholders in the government.

The guidelines I prepared also included the documents’ standard formats and operating procedures. The Chief Operating Officer appreciated my achievements and gradually implemented the same systems on all succeeding projects. I also assisted the Korean head of the H.S.E. department in his motto of “planting the safety tree.” We conducted regular training and workshops and developed a proper system of punishment and reward as a motivation for labor to follow the H.S.E. rules. We also developed an environmental monitoring and mitigation program. Together we were able to complete 1 million safe man hours, which was unique in the construction practices of the country. During his monthly site visit, the Head of the State highly appreciated our H.S.E. team on this achievement.

Upon the yearly performance evaluation, I was handpicked and promoted by the Chief Operating Officer to work as Project Coordinator for Recep Tayyip Erdogan Hospital (RTEH) Expansion Project – a teaching hospital spread on 113 acres situated in a remote district of the state. Here, I worked closely with the Project Director to ensure proper coordination between more than 20 stakeholders of this project. These stakeholders included government departments, clients, consultants, contractors, and vendors. Initially, I had to face multiple challenges as the S.O.P.s for the flow of information were not clearly defined. Therefore, I used the skills I had learned in my previous project to streamline the flow of information between all stakeholders. While working on this project, I also learned contract administration. I was responsible for checking and processing interim payments, variation orders, extension of time requests, and descoping of a contract while ensuring compliance with the conditions of the contract.

Although I garnered extensive knowledge related to construction engineering and project management in these projects, I had to improvise a lot because of a lack of proper background in project management and a lack of information on the international best practices and standards developed for these purposes. Through the Construction Engineering and Project Management program at the University of Texas at Austin, I will be able to overcome the shortcomings in my undergraduate studies and professional experience. The program offers diverse courses that would help me bridge the gap in my professional experience and the construction practices in the U.S.A. For example, the courses “Project Information Management Systems” and “Project Controls” would help me build on my knowledge. In addition, being a “Longhorn Engineer” will allow me to learn from the best in the business – the top industry practitioners and professors with numerous breakthroughs in research and patents.

UT Austin offers an opportunity to its student to gain research experience on real-life projects. Therefore, I will be able to learn not only technical aspects of construction engineering but also the much-in-demand project management skills. Also, I was a member of the debating club of my undergraduate school and won numerous accolades for my institute. Thus, my stay at UT Austin will be an opportunity for me to discover the multicultural American society and learn the values of tolerance and generosity. Moreover, I will avidly represent my country as a country full of colors and joys compared to what is reflected in the international media.

With its vibrant culture and sunny, temperate climate, Austin is among the most desirable cities. Studying at Austin would allow me to connect with and learn from construction industry leaders. UT Austin admits scholars from around the world. It provides its students with an opportunity for networking, professional learning, and exposure to the construction practices of various parts of the world. I will be able to learn not only from highly qualified professors but also from my peers coming from diverse backgrounds. UT Austin is rightly referred to as a “Public Ivy” because of the vast opportunities it provides to its students.

After completing my degree, I plan to work with my current employer. Being in the government department will enable me to enforce the international best practices learned from my graduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin. In addition, one of the General Managers at my organization has a Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from C.E.E., Stanford University. He has combined the knowledge gained from Stanford with the authority he was given as the head of the Engineering & Planning wing of a government department to revolutionize structure design practices. I wish to follow him in his footsteps and bring a change to the predominantly orthodox and outdated construction practices.

After all, “what starts at UT Austin changes the world.” I also dream of starting short courses in various construction engineering and project management skills for professionals. The best benefit of American education is that you get that entrepreneurial confidence in taking the initiative to apply what you have learned in your way. Therefore, in the long term, I wish to start an independent PMO (Project Management Office) for consultation with my father and elder brother. It will solve problems faced by construction projects throughout the country on demand. I am confident that a Master’s degree in Construction Engineering and Project Management from the University of Texas at Austin will fulfill my dreams and aspirations.

Sample MSc Construction Project Management Personal Statement

From a young age, I got spellbound whenever I saw nice building designs and skyscrapers; this inspired me to pursue a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Civil Engineering. Upon graduation, I received the rare privilege of being retained by my school to join the Physical Planning Division as Engineer and Site Manager. In the last 6 years that I have worked there, my responsibility at work has involved management and coordination of construction projects. Also, I have been exposed to working with key fieldsmen which has given me a solid understanding of the management process involved in construction projects.  In this process, I have also developed important skills and competencies like time management, teamwork, efficiency, delegation, effective communication amongst others. After some years working as a Civil Engineer, I am now inclined to Construction Project Engineering, and to fully qualify as an expert in this terrain, I would need to equip myself with advanced construction management knowledge.

I was born and raised in a country that can build a construction industry that can equal other top industries in the world. But, so far, it has been sad to acknowledge that despite the human, material, and natural resources, we are troubled by inadequacies in talent, infrastructure and social justice which have hindered the growth of not only the construction industry but other associated industries. For the construction industry, a good percentage of projects that would have helped extend development to other less developed areas are most times abandoned or stalled due to poor resource management, which has resulted in over-population in major cities, unemployment, and rural stagnation. Nonetheless, recent happening in the (….) infrastructure sector has indicated impressive growth; improved construction expenditure by government and private entities, and increased numbers of real-estate companies are all indicators of the growth that is happening and will continue. This has made professionals begin to align themselves to capitalize on this golden opportunity. For a professional like me who has prior knowledge of what it takes to handle projects through informal project management, I know which to position myself properly to benefit from this rapid growth considering that there are also few domestic players in the terrain of construction management.

I believe my qualification in Civil Engineering provides me with a useful background to excel in construction engineering, and I look forward to developing my understanding of construction practices and techniques, as well as gain improved project management skills. My decision to study in the UK is tied to my love for British construction and engineering companies; notable in my list is Atkins, the engineering company that handled the design and construction of the Burj Al Arab. After watching several documentaries of the construction of the world most luxurious hotel, I was inspired to learn more about the company that handled the project and seeing the groundbreaking achievement they have made, I immediately fell in love with the company and the UK education system for having a hand in grooming most of the brains behind the company. So, my love for British construction companies inspired my decision to pick the UK as my master study destination. I wanted to experience learning from the country that produced one of my favourite engineering companies.

After I made my decision to study in the UK, I began to research for top-class universities that will offer me the leverage of classroom, and field knowledge while providing an accommodating environment for a foreigner. Birmingham City University came highly recommended by my colleagues at work, so after thorough research, I discovered that the BCU will be a good investment for my time and money seeing the exposure to practical and engaging learning experience that I would get here. With lecturers who have multidisciplinary consultancy knowledge in this field, engaging learning environment that enables interaction and exchange of knowledge with people from different cultures, studying in BCU will set me up for career success in this field.

I have laid out my goals; my short term goal is to get a degree in Construction Management from a world-class university that would stand as my entry point into handling big construction projects. My medium-term goal is to join a international construction company where I would have the leverage to apply the knowledge acquired while growing through the ranks. My long-term goal is to become an industry expert running a project consultancy agency after years of active service.

Throughout my career, my goals have evolved and matured due to increased knowledge through field experience and acquired skills. Though I have gained knowledge and had the opportunity to apply it in a practical sense, I also understand the invaluable asset of further education. My career progression has also been slow because of my knowledge gap in some key industry practices and techniques which I plan to gain through advanced studies. So, furthering my education is of utmost importance if I am to fulfil my career goals.

Construction project management personal statement example.

I first discovered my passion for construction during my national service with the South African Defence Force in 1990 – 1991. During this time, I was trained as a combat engineer and this role included a variety of construction related responsibilities such as bridge building, forward base establishment and the repairing and maintenance of roads and airfields. My passion for construction became most apparent during a humanitarian mission in which I was part of a team that provided an isolated village on the border of Namibia/Angola with vital infrastructure. On completion of our mission, we had established a bridge, power, and fresh water supply in the form of a well which was vital to the running of the local clinic. Being a part of a team that was able to use their knowledge and skills of construction to improve the lives of those in need highlighted one of the many benefits of a career in construction.

Consequently, this experience drove me to work as a construction manager in various countries for Africa Tower Technology Holdings. During this time, I acquired experience in the provision of infrastructure sharing services to the communications industry. Fortunately, whilst overseeing the installation of a full turnkey project in the Republic of Chad, I was promoted to the level of project manager. A benefit of this promotion is that it exposed me to the demands and responsibilities expected of a project manager in the construction industry. Moreover, it was during this period of my career that my desire to pursue higher education began.

However, despite this desire I immigrated to the UK in 2006 where I continued to work at the level of construction manager for 13 years. During this period, I acquired valuable experience in different fields of construction such as urban development and housing. Moreover, a further benefit of this period is that it allowed me to acquire valuable experience of the construction industry from the perspective of a developed nation. Therefore, after nearly 30 years in the construction industry my passion for the subject has led me to enrol on a HNC course in Construction Management at West Lothian College.

My decision to enrol on the HNC course has increased my awareness of how I can improve my skills and knowledge. Some of the areas which I have managed to improve include my administrative and communication skills. Moreover, college has provided me with a more well-rounded perspective of the construction industry and increased my confidence in my academic abilities. Additionally, I have discovered new interests in subjects such as Construction Contracts & Procedures and Architectural Drawing.

I believe my experience in the industry and time at college will serve me well during my studies at university. Moreover, pursuing the subject at degree level will allow me to continue to build on the skills I have already acquired. Additionally, acquiring a degree will allow me to continue my career progression and achieve my goal of becoming a well-qualified construction project manager. Finally, being a mature student has provided me with a greater appreciation of higher education and the benefits there of. Consequently, I look forward to pursuing my degree and expanding my horizons by way of higher education.
