Virat kohli biography: birth, age, family and education , virat kohli cricket career.

When West Delhi Cricket Academy was created in 1998, Kohli was part of its first batch and received training under Rajkumar Sharma.

Kohli made his cricket debut in October 2002 with the Delhi Under-15 team in the 2002-03 Polly Umrigar Trophy and lead the team for the next trophy. He was later selected in the Delhi Under-17 team for the 2003-04 Vijay Merchant Trophy where he finished as the highest run-scorer.

At the age of 18, Kohli made his first-class debut for Delhi against Tamil Nadu wherein he scored 10 runs. In July 2006, he made his debut in the Under-19 team during India's tour of England. India won both ODI and Test series. Kohli made his T20 debut next year and emerged as the highest run-scorer in the Inter-State T20 Championship with 179 runs.

The year 2008 was a life-changing year for Kohli. First, he captained the Under-19 Cricket World Cup-winning team. Second, he was bought by RCB for $30,000 on a youth contract for IPL. Third, he made his international debut.

After recovering from a minor injury, Kohli replaced Gambhir for the tri-series in Sri Lanka and batter at no. 4 in the 2009 ICC Champions Trophy as Yuvraj Singh was recovering from an injury.

For the tri-nation ODI tournament in Bangladesh in 2010, Tendulkar was rested, thereby enabling Kohli to play in each match. Due to his phenomenal performance in Bangladesh, he was praised by the then captain MS Dhoni.

Kohli was part of the World Cup-winning team in 2011 and became the first Indian batsman to score a century on World Cup debut.

Kohli made his Test debut against West Indies at Kingston and performed poorly in the series, amassing just 76 runs in five innings. In 2015, he became the first Indian batsman to score a century against Pakistan in a World Cup match.

During South Africa's tour of India, he became the fastest batsman in the world to make 1,000 runs in T20I cricket, achieving the feat in his 27th innings.

During the ODI tour of Australia, Kohli emerged as the fastest batsman in the world to cross the 7000-run mark in ODIs, and the fastest to score 25 centuries.

During the 3 match Test series against Sri Lanka at home in 2017, he became the first batsman to score six double hundreds as a captain. That year, he scored a total of 2818 international runs, the third-highest by an Indian in a calendar year and highest ever by an Indian player.

In August 2018, he ranked no. 1 in the ICC Test rankings. With this, he became the seventh Indian batter to achieve this milestone. He became the first Indian, first captain and tenth overall to hit three successive centuries in ODIs in October 2018.

For the tri-series in Zimbabwe in 2010, Raina was named captain while Kohli was made vice-captain. During this, he emerged as the fastest Indian batsman to reach 1,000 ODI runs.

He was appointed as vice-captain for the 2012 Asia Cup due to his excellent performance in Australia.

Kohli captained the 2013 West Indies tri-series winning team after Dhoni injured himself during the match. He also captained a five-match ODI tour of Zimbabwe, which India won by 5-0, their first in any away ODI series.

He was named vice-captain for the 2014 ICC World T20 Competition where India emerged as the runner ups and Kohli as Man of the Tournament as he amassed 319 runs in the tournament.

He led India in the five-match ODI series against Sri Lanka which India won by 5-0. It was the second whitewash under his captaincy and fourth in India's ODI history.

He led India in the first Test of the Australian tour and scored 115 runs in the first innings, thereby becoming the fourth Indian to score a hundred on his Test captaincy debut. Dhoni announced his retirement from Test cricket at the conclusion of the third match between India and Australia, and Kohli was appointed as the full-time Test captain ahead of the fourth Test at Sydney.

At Sydney, Kohli scored 147 in the first innings and became the first batter in the Test cricket history to score three hundred in his first three innings as Test captain. He was named as captain of the 'Team of the Tournament' for the 2016 World Twenty20 by the ICC.

He captained India in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy. India entered the finals but lost to Pakistan. Kohli also captained the 2019 Cricket World Cup where India failed to reach the finals after losing the semi-final match against New Zealand. India's first whitewash under Kohli's captaincy was India's tour of New Zealand in 2020.

India lost the 2021 ICC World Test Championship Final to New Zealand, Kohli's third defeat as captain in knockouts and finals of ICC tournaments. India failed to make it through the semi-finals in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2021 under Kohli's captaincy.

Virat Kohli biography

Table of Contents

Virat Kohli Biography: “To become a good player, you need talent. To become a great player, you need an attitude like Virat Kohli’s,” – Sunil Gavaskar, former Indian cricket legend. Here we start the Virat Kohli biography which includes all the details about him.

There are some whose consistent success is admired by everyone. And then, there are others, who are so successful and consistent that if they fail even once, it takes everyone by surprise. Virat Kohli belongs to the second breed.

Seeing Sachin Tendulkar hang his boots in 2013 was painful. But the swift rise of King Kohli has alleviated the pain in no time. Both may be poles apart in their attitudes (one an epitome of gentleness. Other, ) or playing style, perhaps. But one thing (and the one that matters the most) similar between them is Consistency. Rarely one has the cricketing world seen such a consistent player like Virat Kohli.

And what a match-winner is he for India! Be it the 133* inning against Sri Lanka, famously dubbed as the Hobart Storm or the 182 in the classic chase against Pakistan in the 2012 Asia Cup, Kohli never failed to mesmerize us.

Life seems beautiful when Virat punches the ball through the covers. God knows how he manages to pierce the gap every time. Here’s one, just a treat to the eyes.

Already excited to know about Mr. Consistent? Well then, here’s all there is to know about Virat Kohli…

Virat Kohli Biography

Virat Kohli Biography: Virat’s cricketing journey began in the summer of 1998. Virat and his brother Vikas were ferried by their father Prem Kohli to a cricket camp in west Delhi.

It was a typical hot summer day and little did Rajkumar Sharma, coach of the West Delhi Cricket Academy, know that over 250 kids would brave this extreme weather.

Amongst these 250 kids was a young Virat who didn’t take much time to turn the eyeballs of Rajkumar. But not the way you would think!

Virat Kohli in Childhood

“I remember noticing this pretty chubby, pretty naughty sort of youngster, who was not even ten, registering enthusiastically” –  reads an excerpt from the book ‘Virat- The Making of a Champion’ in which coach Rajkumar describes his fond memory of Virat.

Virat was the youngest among the lot there. This meant that he had to work very hard to stay in line with the rest. And he did. The gritty youngster grilled and worked ever so hard under the watchful eyes of coach Sharma. Perhaps, these ‘extra’ efforts were the foundation stones of the modern-day Virat Kohli.

Virat played a tournament under Rajkumar held at the Delhi Development Authority’s Sports Complex ground in Hari Nagar. The tournament consisted of six games. Three league fixtures, a quarter-final, a semi-final and a final.

Rajkumar Sharma remembers that Kohli got out only once in the tournament. He was indeed the leading run-scorer in the tournament and was flamboyant with his shots.

But more than the tournament, the most memorable moment in young Virat’s career happened during the presentation ceremony when fast-bowler Ashish Nehra presented him with the ‘Player of the Tournament’. Nehra was a superstar back then, having just come back from an excellent 2003 World Cup campaign.

That was just the start of his career. And how far has Virat come from that incident? Well, the world saw the answer on 1st November 2017 when Ashish Nehra announced his retirement from international cricket in a T20I against New Zealand- under the captaincy of  Virat Kohli. Phew! That will take some time to sink!

Domestic Career

Virat Kohli Biography: Virat’s List A debut came on February 18, 2006, when he played for Delhi against Services. Though he didn’t get to bat in that inning, Delhi won the match comfortably by 233 runs. Virat went on to feature in over 273 List A matches.

Kohli’s Ranji Trophy debut came on November 23, 2006, against Tamil Nadu. The world got to see the youngster’s grit and commitment towards cricket in December when he decided to play for Delhi against Karnataka despite his father’s death the previous day. And despite the tragic incident, he went on to score a crucial 90 runs.

This incident was a turning point in Kohli’s life. “Overnight he became a much more mature person. He took every match seriously. He hated being on the bench. It’s as if his life hinged totally on cricket after that day,” his mother revealed later.

He went on to debut for the India Under-19 squad on the English tour that year. It was followed by a tour to Pakistan, where he returned home with an average of 58 in Test and 41.66 in ODIs.

The following season, he was a part of the Gautam Gambhir-led Delhi squad that won the Ranji Trophy in the 2007-08 season.

2008 U-19 World Cup

Virat Kohli Biography: Having performed well in the U-19 as well as the title-winning Delhi side, Virat was given the captain’s armband to lead the India U-19 side at the 2008 U-19 World Cup in Malaysia.

And that turned out to be an instrumental decision. Kohli would go on to lead the young squad to the title with a 12-run victory over England in the finals.

On a personal front, he scored a total of 165 runs in the group stage, including a century against West Indies.

In the semi-finals against New Zealand, with the team struggling at 40/2, he weaved a crucial partnership with Shreevats Goswami and hit a crucial knock of 43. India would go on to win the game by 3 wickets. Kohli has rightfully adjudged the ‘Player of the Match’.

While Virat Kohli got the better of Kane Williamson, the U-19 Kiwi captain, their paths would cross again a decade later at the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup. And this time, it was Williamson who had the last laugh…

Virat Kohli Debut

Virat Kohli Biography: As Virat Kohli played his teen life’s finest cricket in Malaysia, a group of men sitting in BCCI’s HQ in Mumbai were keenly watching his moves. This was the Indian Cricket selection committee, headed by K Srikkanth.

Srikkanth and his men were looking for a revival of the famed but ageing Indian batting lineup. With the coronation of MS Dhoni as the captain of the team in 2008, the process only accelerated. In Kohli, selectors envisioned a reliable batsman that would hold together the team’s rather fragile middle-order.

And with two main men – Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag – out injured, they wasted little time in getting him on board. Virat made his debut on August 18 2008, on the tour to Sri Lanka. He scored 12 runs then.

After a relatively dry spell of three games, Kohli seized the opportunity in the fourth game by hitting a match-winning, or perhaps series win ning knock of 54 runs. India ultimately won the series 3-2.

Despite coming in and out of the senior team, Kohli was making his mark. This was rewarded by his selection in the 4-team Emerging Players Tournament held between July and August 2009 in Australia.

In the seven games that he played, the 19-year-old scored a massive 398 runs at an average of 66.33, thus ending up as the leading run-scorer in the tournament. Kohli also proved that he was arguably the best batting prodigy in the world at that moment.

Kohli singled out the tournament as the “turning point” of his career. “That boosted my confidence tremendously. I just became so much more mentally stronger. I have now learned to bat in pressure conditions.

From that time, I have just been concentrating on my game and not thinking about other things,” he said at a press conference in 2010.

Virat Kohli in International debut match

Virat Kohli Biography: An injury to Gautam Gambhir provided another lucky recall for Kohli, again for a series against Sri Lanka. In the following tournaments including the 2009 Champions Trophy and the series against Australia.

It was in the 4th ODI of the Sri Lankan series that Kohli hit his first century.  His 224-run stand with Gautam Gambhir prompted the latter to hand his ‘Man of the Match’ award to Kohli.

As he grew in performance over the next few years, Kohli started to regularly feature for India. 2010 was a path-breaking year for him. Virat finished the year with 995 runs at an average of 47.38, making him the highest run-scoring batsman.

And this was a phenomenal achievement for a 22-year-old who was still finding his place amongst established biggies. The year 2010 was really crucial in cementing Virat’s place in India’s starting XI.

Virat Kohli in 2009 Champions trophy

Virat Kohli Biography: The title ‘Chase Master Kohli’ which has been conferred to Virat Kohli is more than enough to describe his ODI career. There have been very few in the history of cricket with such a level of consistency.

Kohli has surpassed legends like Ricky Ponting, Kumar Sangakarra, and Jacques Kallis in the list of most centuries by a batsman. He is threateningly close to the record of 49 ODI centuries. Kohli currently has 43 ODI centuries.

Just to refresh the memories, Kohli made his debut in ODIs against Sri Lanka on August 18, 2008. Kohli was recognized as the ICC ODI Player of the Year in 2012 and has won the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy, given to the ICC Cricketer of the Year, on two occasions, in 2017 and 2018 respectively.

Subsequently, Kohli also won ICC Test Player of the Year and ICC ODI Player of the Year awards in 2018, becoming the first player to win both awards in the same year. In 2013, Kohli reached the number-one spot in the ICC rankings for ODI batsmen for the first time.

Virat Kohli was appointed the Vice Captain of the ODI team in 2012 and handed over the Test captaincy following Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s Test retirement in 2014. In early 2017, he became the limited-overs captain as well after Dhoni stepped down from the position.

In the Australia tour of India 2020, Virat Kohli beats Tendulkar’s record to become the fastest cricketer to score 12,000 ODI runs.

On December 9, 2021, the apex cricketing body removed Virat Kohli as ODI skipper and justified the move by saying they did not want to separate captains for white-ball format.

On October 19, 2023, Virat Kohli became the fastest ever to complete 26,000 runs in International cricket. Virat reached this milestone in just 577 innings while Sachin scored 26000 international runs in 601 innings.

On November 5, 2023, in the World Cup 2023 group match against South Africa Virat scored his 49th ODI century and equals Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI centuries.

Test Career

Virat Kohli Biography: While there has been a prolonged debate about “Smith vs Kohli: Who’s the best test batsman of this generation”, there is one thing that can never go unnoticed. Be it any format, Kohli is always the center of comparison. It’s either Kane Williamson vs Kohli or Joe Root vs Kohli if not Smith.

Such has been the impact of this champion player “Virat Kohli”. Virat stands fourth on the list of players with the most double centuries in test cricket, only behind Bradman, Sangakarra, and Brian Lara.

Kohli achieved the highest-ever test rating for any Indian batsman – 937 against England on 22nd August 2018. The second Indian on the list is Sunil Gavaskar with a rating of 917.

Kohli masquerades a strong test record with 26 centuries and 22 half-centuries in 82 matches.

Virat Kohli stepped down as Test skipper on January 15, 2022, a day after India’s Test series loss in South Africa. Virat steps down with the fourth-most wins as captain in Test cricket, with 40 wins from 68 games. Of the other 28, 11 were draws, and 17 were losses.

  • Kohli amassed 81 runs in three innings of the two-match test series in the Sri Lanka tour of India in 2022 and completed a hundred Test matches. He becomes the 12th Indian cricketer to play this count in test format.
  • Kohli was named in India’s test squad for India’s tour of Bangladesh in 2022-23 where he scored only 45 runs in four innings of the two test matches he played.
  • It was his 29th test century and became the first player to score 50+ score in the 500th international match.
  • He smashed 76 runs in the first test match on July 12 where India won the match by an innings and 32 runs.
  • During the second test played on July 20, 2023, he smashed 121 runs in the first innings but did not get a chance to bat in the second innings. The match finally concluded in a draw.
  • He smashed 38 and 76 runs in the first test match played between December 26 and 28 where India lost the match by an innings and 42 runs.
  • He scored 58 runs in the second test played between Jan 03 and 04, 2024 where India won the match by seven wickets.
  • He withdrew from England’s tour of India in 2024 due to the birth of his second child in London.

Virat Kohli in test match

Virat Kohli Biography: The first T20 match between Zimbabwe and India in India’s tour of Zimbabwe, saw Kohli make his T20 international debut. To be specific about the date, it was the 12th of June, 2010.

And Kohli had a brilliant debut! He scored a crucial 26 not out from 21 balls apart from stitching an unbeaten 64-run partnership with Yusuf Pathan in the chase to see India home.

If you look at that day and compare it with Kohli of today, things have changed exponentially. He is the captain of the Indian national team across all formats. He averages 50 in the T20I format itself!

On 6th December 2019, Kohli again gave evidence of his supremacy in the chase game against West Indies by scoring an unbeaten 94, his highest score in T20Is, and helping India chase down a massive total of 207 runs. This was the Men in Blue’s highest run-chase in T20I.

During the 2014 T20 World Cup, he set a record for the most runs scored in the tournament. In 2018, he achieved yet another milestone, becoming the world’s top-ranked Test batsman, making him the only Indian cricketer to hold the number one spot in all three game formats.

His form continued in 2019 when he became the first player to score 20,000 international runs in a single decade

In 2021, Kohli decided to step down as the captain of the Indian national team for T20Is, following the T20 World Cup and in early 2022 he stepped down as the captain of the Test team as well.

Virat Kohli Biography: Virat represents the breed of players who have been a part of only one franchise since the inception of IPL. Mind you! It’s a rare breed. Inducted into the Royal Challengers Bangalore side in the year 2008, Kohli has been the face of the franchise.

  • Kohli was given the responsibility of leading the side in 2013 and has been leading since. There cannot be a tournament in which Kohli doesn’t leave his mark.
  • In the IPL season of 2016, Kohli sent down the records shattering. He scored a whopping 973 runs in that season with 4 hundred and 7 fifties! That’s a pretty serious record.

David Warner stands second in the list of most runs in an IPL season with 848 runs. At the moment, Kohli is the only player to score 6000+ runs in IPL.

  • Following the completion of the IPL 2021 season, Virat Kohli stepped down as RCB captain and continued to play for the franchise.
  • During the IPL 2022 season he had a poor run scoring 341 runs in 16 matches he played.
  • Virat Kohli has an impressive run during the 2023 season amassing 639 runs with a high score of 101* runs and an average of 53.25.
  • He smashed an impressive 77 runs on 49 deliveries on RCB’s second match of the campaign against Punjab Kings where the former side won the match by four wickets. With these runs, Virat Kohli has 100 50+ scores in T20.
  • During the RR vs RCB clash on April 6 in Jaipur, Virat becomes the first batter to score 7500 runs in the IPL tournament. In the same match, Virat scored the first century of the IPL 2024, also his 8th in IPL.

After withdrawing from England’s tour of India in 2024, Virat Kohli was said to be out of the country due to a family emergency. AB de Villiers who revealed that Virat is expecting his second baby on his YouTube channel, has taken his word back saying that was a piece of wrong information.

“Family comes first and then Cricket. I had made a big mistake on my YouTube channel. That information was wrong and not true at all,”

But February 20, the couple took Instagram handle to reveal the birth of their second child.

“With abundant happiness and our hearts full of love, we are pleased to inform everyone that on 15th February, we welcomed our baby boy Akaay & Vamika’s little brother into this world! We seek your blessings and good wishes in this beautiful time in our lives. We request you to kindly respect our privacy at this time. Love & Gratitude, Virat & Anushka.”

The Inspiration

Virat Kohli Biography: The legend himself, Sir Vivian Richards said that Kohli reminds of himself. Virat Kohli has always considered Sachin Tendulkar his inspiration. He says on his website www.viratkohli.club, “He’s (Tendulkar) been my inspiration. After seeing his knocks in Sharjah, I really got inspired to do something like that for India, win games single-handedly. I used to dream of doing something like that for the country, the way he used to win us games,” he said.

“I wouldn’t sit and think that I’ve done something similar because at that time I don’t think anyone else in the team scored apart from him in those two games. Now, there are others like Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma.”

Virat Kohli player profile

India has given to the world many a great cricketer but perhaps none as ambitious as Virat Kohli. To meet his ambition, Kohli employed the technical assiduousness of Sachin Tendulkar and fitness that was in the league of top athletes in the world, not just cricketers. As a result, Kohli became the most consistent all-format accumulator of his time, making jaw-dropping chases look easy, and finding, in his own words, the safest possible way to score runs. Plenty of them.

This ambition transferred seamlessly to his captaincy: he demanded more than ever of his bowlers especially the quick ones, often sacrificed a batsman for bowling depth, and led India to a long stay at No. 1 in Test rankings and a first-ever series win in Australia. He is well on his way to end up as India's most successful Test captain.

Barring one in Bangladesh, Kohli scored Test hundreds in and against every country he played. He absolutely smashed records for number of matches taken to reach eight, nine, ten and eleven thousand ODI runs, and became the first batter to score 50 hundreds in one-day internationals.

An Under-19 world Cup-winning captain, when he burst onto the scene, Kohli was a precocious talent with a cover drive to kill for. He was destined to be India's next big batsman as the Tendulkar era began to retire, but Kohli wanted to be more: a cricketer whom the opposition would be in awe of, a cricketer whose presence would raise the intensity of the contest. He lived every ball, competed each moment, and made sure he had the fitness and strength to do so. He was widely credited for changing the fitness culture in Indian cricket, introducing endurance tests as a criterion for selection.

Kohli was quite simply India's most powerful captain. Centre of every marketing campaign for Indian cricket, he also happened to lead at a time when the BCCI was run by interim administrators who knew better than to draw the ire of Indian cricket's biggest star. There was never any cause to doubt his intent: to do things that will win matches for India, which they did plenty under him.

Arguably the greatest all-round batsman of this generation and one of the finest of all time. There are two distinct halves in Kohli’s career – the first where he struggled to cope with the sudden stardom and pressure, and the second where he reinvented himself, made fitness the driving force behind his cricket and took his game to a level never before seen.

Kohli is so much more than the runs, centuries and wins. He has become the undisputed king of cricket, injecting life into the global game and raising the profile of Test cricket at a time when T20 cricket was threatening to take over completely.

It was clear early on that Kohli was destined for greatness. He lost his father when he was 18. The tragedy struck during his team Delhi’s first-class match against Karnataka in 2006. After completing the final rites, Kohli returned to the ground and scored a match-saving 90 in the second innings.

His international career had a slow start. Kohli struggled to cement his spot in the team until around 2010. He found form just in time for the 2011 World Cup, was included in India’s playing XI and scored a century in his first World Cup game – against Bangladesh. He featured in every game as the men in blue lifted the 50-over title.

The next year, Kohli made a career-defining decision to revamp his fitness regime and make it the focal point of his cricket. Kohli quickly turned into a fitness fanatic and set the benchmark for aspiring cricketers in India and across the world.

Success on the field followed soon after as Kohli became an ODI batting behemoth, mastering the art of securing wins in a chase. He first became Test captain in 2014. But it was only by 2017 that Kohli became captain across all formats. The Kohli era had started and he brought about a complete change in team culture, with emphasis on fitness, fast bowlers and attitude.

It is getting difficult to keep up with the number of records that Kohli has broken over the last few years. He is the only batsman to average more than 50 in all three formats, has already scored 70 international centuries by the age of 31 and seems well on his way to breaking every major batting record.

Under his reign, India have become the No1 Test team in the world with Kohli one of the most successful Test captains of all time – 33 victories with a win percentage of 62. But there are a few missing pieces – victory in a major tournament as captain and Test series wins in England and South Africa being the main ones.

If Kohli manages to tick off the final few boxes, he will finish his career as the greatest player and captain India has produced.

His debut was in place of Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag and he followed MS Dhoni as captain.

Since then, he has been incomparable.

Kohli made his ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup debut in 2011 as the second youngest member of India’s victorious squad at just 22 – though he had already made 45 ODI appearances by the start of the tournament, such was the regard with which he was held in.

His India debut did not foreshadow what was to come, Kohli dismissed for just 12 against Sri Lanka, but it did not take him long to make an impact and he brought up a maiden half-century in his fourth game.

A first hundred came over a year later but the Delhi native had to be patient and wait for the absence of some Indian greats to nail down a place in the side.

Kohli came in for a rested Tendulkar during a tri-nation ODI tournament at the start of 2010, seizing his opportunity with another century.

Away from the pitch, Kohli was something of a conundrum but for his captain at the time, Dhoni, the team liked Kohli just the way he was.

He said: "It's important for him to be himself. You have to show off what you are and he has matured now.

“To us, he comes as a humble guy. He might come across differently to the world.

"Being a good human being is important, but it can come later, what's important now is that he [Kohli] scores on the field.”

Kohli ended the year as India’s leading run-scorer in ODIs with an average of 47.38 and with it came a spot in the 2011 World Cup squad on home soil.

He set the tone with a century in the tournament’s opening game before rebuilding with Gambhir in the final following the early departures of Sehwag and Tendulkar, making 35 to help India on the path to an historic triumph.

From there, a Test debut came and emboldened by a brief stint as ODI captain in 2013, scoring a century in just his second match as skipper, Kohli began to break records.

Against Australia, he hit the fastest ODI century by an Indian and fastest against the Aussies, reaching three figures from just 52 balls.

A first century as Test captain followed in 2014, Australia again the opponents, while standing in for Dhoni before taking over the reins full-time mid-way through the series.

Captaincy requires the shouldering of expectations, the weight of the nation rests with you and when the nation totals hundreds of millions of people, the weight could be unbearable.

But for Kohli, it was a spark for some of the greatest years of his career.

In 2016 and 2017, he scored a double century across four consecutive Test series, overtaking a record held by Don Bradman and Rahul Dravid.

No one could keep up with Kohli. He was awarded the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year in 2017, repeating the feat the next year.

His trophy cabinet was further filled in 2018, with ICC Men's Test Player of the Year and ICC Men's ODI Player of the Year gongs, also being named one of Time's 100 Most Influential People.

During this time, Kohli passed 10,000 ODI runs, the fastest man to that milestone, achieving the feat in 54 fewer innings than the previous quickest, Tendulkar.

A downturn in form ultimately culminated in him stepping down first from the T20 captaincy, then ODIs and finally Tests.

But the old saying about form being temporary and class permanent rang true as he scored his first hundred in 1020 days in 2022, smashing 122 runs from 61 deliveries against Afghanistan in the Asia Cup for his first T20I century.

The King was back, and the fired-up youngster of his early years was replaced by a beaming father figure.

He said: "The last two and a half years have taught me a lot.

“Those angry celebrations are a thing of the past.

“I have had many suggestions, lots of advice has come my way; people were telling me I was doing this wrong, that wrong.

“I picked out all the videos from the best time I had, same initial movement, same approach towards the ball and it was just what was happening inside my head, I wasn't able to explain it to anyone."

Kohli has since passed 500 games for India and his career is coming close to completing a full revolution as the tournament that put him and the rest of the 2011 squad into folklore returns to India’s shores.

Kohli is the sole successful player from the class of 12 years ago to be part of India’s squad this time around. To complete the circle, both he and India will hope he ends the 2023 edition holding the trophy again.

MI vs RCB: Virat Kohli gestures Wankhede crowd to stop booing Hardik Pandya

V irat Kohli was not one bit impressed with the Wankhede Stadium crowd on Thursday when it welcomed Hardik Pandya with a loud round of booing. Kohli signaled to the crowd to stop the negative reception for the newly-appointed MI captain and urged the fans to get behind their skipper. The heartwarming gesture from Kohli went viral even as RCB were outclassed in a one-sided IPL 2024 match by the 5-time champions at the iconic venue.

MI vs RCB  Highlights  |  Scorecard

Virat Kohli appeared disappointed as he heard boos welcome Hardik Pandya when the MI captain joined Suryakumar Yadav in the middle in the 12th over of their 197-run chase. Kohli appeared to gesture that Hardik plays for the country and that he didn't deserve such a reception from the crowd at the Wankhede. Hardik has been at the receiving end of loud boos from fans, who are yet to come to terms with the change in captaincy at MI. While Rohit Sharma was cheered for every shot that he played on Thursday, Hardik found the going tough, in terms of reception from the fans.

Hardik Pandya was not booed so much at the toss, unlike their first home game earlier in the month. In their game against the Royals on April 1, Hardik was booed loudly at the toss and broadcaster Sanjay Manjrekar stepped in and urged the crowd to "behave" .

On Thursday, the first boos for Hardik Pandya came when he walked into bowl for the first time after the 2nd match of the IPL 2024 season. However, the loudest boos came when he walked out to bat - a sight that did not please Virat Kohli.

Virat Kohli kept interacting with the fans at the Wankhede Stadium as he had nothing much to do on the field when the Mumbai batters were sending them flying into the stands. MI chased down 197 in just 15.3 overs, making a mockery of the target and clinching their second successive win of the season after 4 losses on the trot.

When the Wankhede crowd urged RCB captain Faf du Plessis to give the ball to Virat Kohli with the famous "Kohli ko bowling do" chant, the batting star gestured to spare him of the horror as MI bowlers were sending everything into the stands on a dewy evening.

It was a stellar show of power-hitting from MI as Ishan Kishan smashed 69 off 34 while Rohit Sharma hit 38 off 24 balls. Suryakumar Yadav, playing his second game in IPL 2024, smashed 52 in just 19 balls.

Captain Hardik Pandya made sure MI raced to the target as he smashed 21 in just 6 balls, hitting 3 sixes en route.

Virat Kohli asks fans to cheer for Hardik Pandya

Pandya was once again exposed to the hate of the MI supporters who welcomed him with unruly behaviour. Kohl appealed to the crowd to cheer for the MI captain.

Newly-appointed skipper Hardik Pandya continues to face flak from Mumbai Indians fans despite the team returning to winning ways. The 5-time champions tasted victory after three consecutive defeats last week and they didn’t lose the momentum while hosting Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Tuesday. After Jasprit Bumrah’s majestic fifer, the visitors posted 196 on the board. In reply, Mumbai chased down with 27 balls to spare.

But not everyone was hooting against Pandya. There was a section of fans who cheered for the MI skipper. On the other hand, the all-rounder silenced the haters with a quick-fire 6-ball 21 as Mumbai defeated Bengaluru by 7 wickets.

Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan provided the fireworks with the bat after Bumrah’s heroics. The wicketkeeper-batter went ballistic to make 69 off just 34 balls while Suryakumar dazzled with a 19-ball 52 with four sixes and five fours, as Mumbai Indians overhauled RCB’s 197-run target in just 15.3 overs.

Earlier, RCB huffed and puffed but put up a challenging 196/8 courtesy skipper Faf du Plessis (61), Rajat Patidar (50) and Dinesh Karthik’s 23-ball 53 not out but the total proved to be far from enough.

Bumrah weaved his magic en route to a five-wicket haul before Karthik played a blinder in the death overs to take RCB close to 200. In a contest where his fellow pacers erred consistently, Bumrah’s accuracy and mastery over variation helped him rule the roost once again.
