It amazes me how most curriculum skips practice. Publishers must figure that parents and teachers will simply go the extra mile.

Enter: printable sixth grade worksheets that offer practice!

Most printable worksheet sites offer what amounts to quizzes. Now your students can have a practice run first!

Since there are so many different topics and levels taught in any one sixth grade program, you will find many useful worksheets outside this level. If you've been following through this site through the last several years, these pages are the next level up.

Teaching Sixth Grade

So often, our children reach sixth grade without the basics.

Or they've forgotten everything they've ever learned. Somehow.

This is the very reason that many teachers and parents find our site. If you're hoping to remedy a deficiency in your students' learning, different levels from this whole site can be very useful.

Simply use the search bar at the bottom of every page for the concept your students need to practice, like "fraction worksheets".

Usually there's less need for practice worksheets in this grade because students are beginning to read to learn about other things in a more comprehensive way.

Learning to read is one thing, reading to learn opens the whole world. This is the beginning of the journey of a lifetime for each of your children.

1. Printable Sixth Grade Worksheets For Math

Review and practice the basics.

Many sixth graders are not familiar enough with their early  math  facts because they never had the time and the help necessary to memorize them, or because they've been using calculators and are a bit rusty.

In this case our Math facts videos, printable flash cards, and other printable sixth grade worksheets are sooo helpful.

Move On To Bigger And Better

These next worksheets require low teacher or parent involvement once your students have been introduced to the concepts.

Kids can work on their own once you download (print or share files) the math worksheets. Print and practice!

Sixth Grade Math Word Problems

So many times math is not the problem for those who struggle with math word problems.

Sometimes it's a grammar difficulty where the logic of the sentences does not make sense. See if diagramming the sentences helps them see the actual question being asked.

Often it's a reading problem. See below for my heartiest recommendation, if reading is hard for your sixth graders.

2. 6th Grade Reading

Phonics basics.

I frequently see sixth graders who cannot read well.

Our phonics videos, flash cards and worksheets can be a big help here because they offer quick review in a painless format - not another quiz.

Refresh these concepts first.

Our advanced phonics video lessons work well with our printable phonics worksheets and make quick practice for older students. The phonics rules can be a giant help for both 6th grade Reading and Spelling.

Will The Real Sixth Grade Reading Level Please Stand?

By the time your students are at the sixth Grade Reading level they're usually not simply learning to read. They are able to read to learn. Kids learn all the time, yet now they're learning and learning how to learn from their reading.

Supposedly.

Usually there's not much teaching left to do in 6th Grade Reading, at least as far as the mechanics of reading go.

Really, if kids will write more they'll learn to read better so be sure to take a look at  Karen Newell's creative writing ideas in her Write On book . Both are available as downloads.

Teaching Grammar

Printable Grammar Slammer - Easy Grammar Lessons

Hang In There, Reading Gets Easier

For some students, all they have to do is to keep on "keepin' on".

The more writing and reading that your students do in other classes, the more chance they'll have of improving their comprehension. This is good to know when things look overwhelming. A child may struggle today, and may thrive later - even real soon if they're working at it.

Be encouraged.

Only rarely is it true that a whole sixth Grade class is at the same experience and maturity level, so their comprehension of ideas is affected here as well.

You already know that the best reading activity is to read.

Writing Helps Reading Skills

By sixth grade most students have had a hand at writing their own essays and book reports so they appreciate reading from a different perspective.

Generally, they have an idea of the work involved in creating a story and are a bit more interested in the stories of others. This is when good histories and biographies become interesting.

If your students are interested in the books they are reading, they'll read them better.

Either edify the books you require or suggest light titles that are of interesting topics. Be excited so that your students will be excited.

Many students really appreciate suggestions of books to choose because it can be hard to stand amongst the shelves wondering which book to is a good choice. Not to mention the siren call of electronics.

You'll find that your students will work harder through books in which they have an interest, even if the reading level is a bit high. Once they've read several tougher books they'll have an easier time reading the day to day material. One hard book covers most of the skills needed for a lifetime.

Remember the value of writing. Old timers like in Laura Ingalls Wilder's stories wrote from a book to a slate as the main way to practice their work. They did not have reams of loose leaf paper to spend on writing.

Writing? It's a great way to learn. Teachers and college students take notes from their reading all day long. Writing does aid both reading and memory work.

Romalda Spalding's Writing Road To Reading

How to teach reading.

We're not usually teaching reading to sixth graders as most usually have this skill. I say this often this site, yet I'd be remiss not to mention it here; I really learned "how to teach reading" as an art after using the  Writing Road To Reading  by Romalda Spalding.

Reading came fairly easily to me. It did not come easily for some of my children, and that was heart breaking for all of us.

In our family  Grandpa  came to the rescue in this case. He decided to take the Spalding courses in Phoenix, Arizona and came home ready to teach the basics to all of his grandchildren.

Go Back To TRUE Basics

Within two months Grandpa had had such good results with our children and local nieces and nephews that others were asking to join us at our homes.

Soon he opened his own home for the purpose of teaching phonics and in the course of the next few years before his final illness he had helped over 60 other families for free.

He's the reason we keep our PrintNPractice resources free.

  • Yes, you can buy our worksheets in bundles ; but all of them and more are available free on this site.

We were all astonished at how basic phonics lessons really improved the reading skills of our older children , too.

At first they felt awkward learning the sounds and the rules; but by the time the next quarter came they could already see an improvement in their reading. They were unanimously grateful to have had to study phonics even at a late time.

One child conveyed to me her joy that not only did her spelling grade improve, but it was so much easier to study her history and science classes. Even Math was a bit easier simply because her reading was easier.

The  Writing Road To Reading  also has a great sixth grade reading list so you have an idea of some classic books that have interested children for years. I heartily recommend this book.

3. Printable Sixth Grade Worksheets for Spelling

Printable 6th grade spelling words & worksheets.

Half the battle with children learning their sixth grade spelling words is making sure that they copy the words correctly the first time.

Our spelling list for sixth grade has much longer words than the words in our lower levels. They frequently use several variations on a base word for easier Vocabulary work.

Your students will see the Spelling rules in action in the different spellings of derived words and be able to make connections when learning other new words.

Seeing the different versions of words with their different prefixes and suffixes also teaches Vocabulary skills. These same Vocabulary skills transfer to other words, too.

6th Grade Spelling List, 8 Pages

The first download has an eight page list of Spelling words to use through the year. Print them double sided for reference to keep on your desk or in your binder.

8 Pages Of Printable Sixth Grade Spelling Word Lists

6th Grade Spelling Worksheets, 98 pages

The second download has ninety-eight pages including the same Spelling word list on the left; so, at first, it will look to be the same download.

It has the Spelling worksheets for these same words that have space to copy the words three times.

Sixth Grade Spelling Ideas

Create spelling lists from reading books.

This is a super efficient way to improve spelling for anyone.

One hundred years ago most readers used this method and they even marked the phonics sounds .

Use your students' reading books to find new words or complicated words and then create your own Spelling list for those words.

Do it ahead of time so that the reading is easier and makes better sense. Once your students have then read the material, they'll have a better understanding of the meaning of the words used.

You can use this idea in History and Science classes, too, even Math classes since reading is half the trouble with word problems. We have ruled spelling sheets on our  Lined Writing Paper  page that you can use to make your unique spelling lists for copywork.

You can buy our  K-6 spelling worksheets in one bundle  with convenient files. This also includes our phonics spelling words.

Personal Spelling List

This is an ancient idea and you can do it two ways.

  • Write words your children have trouble reading.
  • Have them write those words.

Assign those words to practice three times each till they are no longer hard to spell.

Do you know what?

Knowing that there's more work later for not knowing their words often motivates kids to get it right the first time. :-)

Speller Notebook

I know several children who simply kept a separate notebook to study the words that they had missed.

Others simply kept a list at the back of the notebook they were using for class. This keeps the words close and handy through the year.

4. 6th Grade Grammar And Writing

Sixth Grade is a time when students should be able to construct sentences on their own, capitalize and punctuate, and even diagram simple sentences.

By 6th Grade writing class, most children are able to write from memory, but it is grammar that is the bugaboo. Check out our grammar pages for diagrams, capitalization, and punctuation.

Understanding the use of words can be a trick. How do words describe other words? Seeing the use of words on a diagram can be most helpful. Our diagramming worksheets show the parts of speech in their correct places.

The next trick is finding creative writing ideas that appeal to 6th graders.

We have practice Grammar worksheets that include diagramming charts and the definitions as well as place for the children to practice what is being taught.

My favorite writing courses for children include creative Writing ideas .

Thank you for visiting our sixth grade worksheets.

Oh, those loveable 6th graders! What would middle school be like with out them? Here are all of my reading worksheets that were written at the 6th grade level. I used this fantastic site to determine the readability scores of these worksheets, but you should read and approve them yourself before giving them to your students. Readability scores are not perfect and there are many different algorithms to determine readability scores. I use an average of these scores, but they can vary wildly. For these reasons, I encourage you to open up the reading levels two grade levels in each direction. This will give you a good selection of texts that are appropriate for a 6th grade student to read.

This is wonderful! Are these worksheets to be done before or after a lesson on the subject? Are they pre-tests? Do you present each lesson in the order they are listed here?

Use them as you feel that they will best assist you and your students in reaching your goals. This is kind of what I did when I was teaching: https://www.ereadingworksheets.com/e-reading-worksheets/reading-unit-and-lesson-plans-aligned-with-common-core-state-standards/

AN EXCELLENT WEBSITE

This is a great website for children to read and for teachers to provide. As a student it is recommended for students and teachers.

there should be only chose the answer not question answer but anyway it is a nice website i hope you will improve this thing and one last thing please give small comprehension or passage

Most teachers like it when students are required to explain their answers. It adds reflection and expression to the exercises. I do understand that when you are working on these by yourself, you may not be interested in answering short response questions. In that case, you can disable them on the screen where you enter your name. The option box is in the top right corner. Best wishes.

yes, i am with you i cannot study when i only go down with arrow i see the answer .

so please this app should respect our decisions

I’m confused as to what your decisions are and how I could improve my respect toward your decisions.

TOO GOOD! JUST LOVED IT! KEEP UP THE GOOD JOB!!!

These worksheets are the absolute best I have encountered thus far. Can you point me in the direction of some myth worksheets? Thanks.

Thank you for this resource. It is amazing and has proven to be invaluable. I appreciate your hard work and thoughtfulness. I have learnt so much from you as an educator and so have the children I work with. Thelma

Thank you for the kind words. They are inspiring. Best wishes!

Mr. Morton, could you check the answers for The Story of Keesh worksheet #’s 1 and 2? I believe the answers on the worksheet may be reversed, with the correct answer for 1 being “D”, and the correct answer for 2 being “A”. The electronic version provides different solutions than the worksheet answer key. Thanks in advance for reviewing, and great resource!

You are absolutely right. I have amended the key.

hi, there is a typo I think above in your entry paragraph: “What would middle school be like with out them?” I think without must be written as one word. otherwise your site is amazing!

I love this website. It is so helpful to me and to others. I love this website alot.

Julia Bettis

I don’t know why these aren’t available in pdf format. I can’t open the RTF files without some of the text missing or blocked out.

They are available as PDFs.

thank you for providing such a wonderful resource… though I have purchased other resources, they do not measure up… I have constantly returned to this site for better quality passages and questions… thank you and you are APPRECIATED!!!

That’s nice of you to say. I’m always working to provide new and better resources. Come back again!

This was so very helpful for me, now I have vacation homework that will help for sixth grade

Michelle Montalvo

Thank you SOO Much for providing this resource. I was looking for worksheets that I can use to avoid the “summer slump”. This was amazing!!

This website has been a wonderful resource! I am in my pre-student teaching phase and I have been tasked to work with a student that is three grades levels below in reading. Sometimes it is difficult to judge readability and this website has made it easy for me to select activities to support her goals. Thank you so much!

I’m so happy to hear it. Best wishes.

This is hands down the best resource of its kind on the internet (at least that I have come across… and I’m Google-happy). Thank you from the bottom of my heart. You saved me sooo much time and effort (and I still wouldn’t have been able to do it quite as well). Thank you, thank you and thank you for taking the time. I’m sure it was a labor of love.

You are so welcome. Come back again. I make a lot of updates. Thank you for taking the time to comment and for the kind words.

The answer is wrong for the mongoose article for the first one the correct answer would be c

Thank you for sharing that. I have fixed the error.

What a wonderful tool for Language class! I liked it a lot and, definitively I will use it

Sixth-Grade Homework

Even if your daughter is using most of her time efficiently, she may need some help from you in managing the bigger homework load that sixth grade brings. Having a set time and place for doing homework will give her the self-discipline to start each day. Beyond this, you need to make sure your daughter knows how to plan her work. Before your child tackles her first assignment, she needs to prioritize her work from studying for a test first to doing a math worksheet last. Have her tell you her plans for several days so she gets in the habit of doing this.

Help your daughter further along the path to homework success by making sure that she reads directions carefully and can use textbook and worksheet examples to make sure she is on the right track with an assignment. Then stay nearby to provide assistance if she asks for it. While it is acceptable to work with her to get an assignment started, avoid doing any of her work.

If these hints don't help your daughter reduce her homework time substantially, you need to talk to her teachers about how burdensome homework is for your child. Take a list of the daily assignments that your child has to your discussion, and find out how long the teachers think each assignment should take. Quite often, when several teachers are making assignments, they don't realize how overwhelming the homework load is.

Iowa House passes literacy bill that would allow parents to hold back struggling students

6th grade homework

Iowa House lawmakers have passed a bill that would require aspiring teachers to take a new assessment aimed at teaching literacy and require schools to provide students with personalized plans if they are not reading at grade level.

House lawmakers voted 92-3 Tuesday to pass House File 2618 , sending it to the Senate for consideration.

Gov. Kim Reynolds proposed a version of the legislation in her Condition of the State address in January, kick-starting the conversation.

The bill requires students in Iowa's teacher-preparation programs to take the " Foundations of Reading " assessment developed by Massachusetts. The results would be reported to the Iowa Department of Education.

The curriculum is used by 13 states, according to Pearson's website , which describes the assessment as "aligned with scientifically based reading research for early childhood education, elementary education, middle childhood education and special education teacher licensure candidates."

Prep for the polls: See who is running for president and compare where they stand on key issues in our Voter Guide

Reynolds' original proposal would have required aspiring Iowa teachers to pass the test to graduate from their teacher preparation program and receive their licensure. The House bill removes the requirement that potential teachers pass the test or that it be used as a criteria for graduation.

Rep. Tom Moore, R-Griswold, the bill's House floor manager and a retired teacher, described the new version of the legislation as "toned down" from Reynolds' proposal.

"I also want to thank the governor’s office for their willingness to accept my toning down what the original bill was and to come up with what I feel is a good compromise and allowing those teaching institutions to be able to administer a test but not have it be tied to their licensure or their graduation," he said.

Schools would be required to notify parents and guardians of children in kindergarten through sixth grade if their student is not reading proficiently at grade level.

The notice to parents would inform them that they can request that their student be held back at the current grade level if they are not reading proficiently. If parents ask for their child to repeat a grade, the school must honor the request.

Any students from kindergarten through sixth grade who are not reading at grade level would be given a personalized plan until their reading improves.

Rep. Sharon Steckman, D-Mason City, a retired teacher, said she appreciates how the bill was changed from the original proposal. She said teachers are already doing much of what is laid out in the bill.

"Teachers watch out for kids that are not reading at grade level already. Teachers talk to parents already. Teachers put forth an (individualized education program) or some sort of a plan for that student to get on grade level already," she said. "So much of this we’re already doing."

Moore said he believes it's still important for the state to require that K-6 students be given personalized reading plans if they're not reading proficiently.

"Obviously, we wouldn’t be in the middle of the pack nationally reading-wise if all of our teachers were doing some of these things," he said.

Senate Republicans have put forward their own bill that takes a different approach to teaching literacy. It's unclear whether the Senate would accept the House's legislation or if lawmakers will negotiate further on the proposal.

BBC to invest in AI to help transform its education services

Hopes investment to make Bitesize more personalised and interactive will attract future licence-fee payers

The BBC plans to use a multimillion investment to transform its educational offering and attract the licence-fee payers of the future, with the help of artificial intelligence.

After being heavily relied upon by desperate parents during the pandemic lockdowns, the BBC is to announce a new £6m investment in BBC Bitesize to make learning more personalised and interactive for students from primary school onwards. The money is part of an effort to lock in young users’ relationship with the public service broadcaster.

Helen Foulkes, the BBC’s head of education, said: “It’s a significant investment in BBC Bitesize to turn it from a really brilliant, trusted digital textbook, to a much more personalised learning platform. We’re taking our education service and making it fit for the digital age, so the learning adapts to the user.”

Marking 100 years since the broadcast of its first educational programme – an experimental schools radio programme heard only by Garnetbank school in Glasgow in February 1924 – there will be a special Live Lesson on CBBC and BBC iPlayer on Monday, giving young viewers tips on how to produce their own report for the channel’s Hacker T Dog radio show. Foulkes said the move would build on the BBC’s trusted educational brand. “When you use the BBC you know it’s safe, you know it’s trusted, you know it’s right and that does help as a parent,” she said.

But in an acknowledgement that the BBC is in danger of being left behind by more fleet-footed digital content providers, the home of Newsround and the magic pencil is taking a leaf out of the book of AI-powered learning tools such as Duolingo to better use its vast database of educational content.

New tools, which are under development, are likely to provide personalised testing and identify holes in learning, while, like a “spinach version” of YouTube, users are also likely to find suggestions for follow-on content to deepen understanding of a subject.

The BBC is also testing out a new service for A-level students, providing content to help them widen their knowledge around a subject. Piloted around English literature, students studying Jane Austen could find they are offered a BBC adaption of Pride and Prejudice. “We’ll test it with students and teachers to see if that is a useful supplementary offer,” Foulkes said.

In the context of £700m annual savings the BBC’s director general, Tim Davie, has said need to be found to ensure the broadcaster’s survival, £6m is something of a drop in the ocean.

But the move appeared to be a nod to a promise he explored in a landmark speech at the Royal Television Society last month : that while the broadcaster ruled out the use of AI in its journalism, it was developing “unique ethical algorithms” to increase personalisation for users. Davie said the BBC would proactively deploy AI on “our terms” to create tools that helped it build relevance”.

It also spoke directly to the broadcaster’s founding Reithian purpose to “inform, educate, entertain”, said Foulkes. “Education is the jammy bit in the middle – it’s really important,” she said.

Foulkes pointed to the role the BBC played during the pandemic, when Bitesize had 3.8 million weekly users during the first term. “Only the BBC could have provided that pandemic response, because it’s got 100 years of education behind it,” she said. “It was great that the general public really understood that’s what the BBC can do as a public service … It’s something the team is really proud of.”

But there may also be a little benign self-interest involved. Last year, the BBC annual report revealed the broadcaster was struggling to attract younger audiences. Its reach among 16- to 34-year-olds had slipped from 81% using any BBC service in a normal week to 76% over the course of a year. The figure was worse for the under-16s, with 72% using BBC services in an average week, well behind YouTube.

“I think what the BBC wants is for people to value the BBC and use the BBC, whatever their age,” said Foulkes. “And any touch points that you’ve got with that younger audience, it’s really important to make sure we’re both supporting them both on the children’s entertainment side and ... on that educational side, and then introducing them to the rest of the BBC.”

Want to see how Tennessee measures third grade reading? Try a TCAP practice test

6th grade homework

The standardized Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program tests, also known as TNReady or TCAPs, kick off this week statewide.

Last year's rollout of a controversial third grade reading and retention law placed the TCAP under intense scrutiny. As the law took effect in 2023, the sole measurement of reading proficiency was each third grader's score on the English language arts section of the TCAP. But experts, teachers and education leaders argue it's not a reading proficiency test but rather a test of reading comprehension.

State lawmakers added a provision to the reading law to allow universal reading screening assessments to be considered in decisions on holding children back or not.

So what exactly does the English language arts section of the TCAP entail for third graders? A practice test, available online through the Tennessee Department of Education offers some insight.

Want to try your hand at one? Here's a look at what was on the spring 2023 English language arts section of the TCAP for third graders.

(Quick note: We've adapted the format of the practice test so it fits better here. None of the reading materials, questions or multiple choice answers have been changed.)

Part 1: Rory's funny story

Read the passage and answer the questions that follow.

"Rory's Funny Story" by Janice Graham

1 Everybody in Rory’s class had a Funny-but-True story to tell. The teacher, Mrs. Evans, had the best Funny-but- True stories of all. On Monday she told about her cat playing the piano. On Tuesday she told how she found a nibbled-on piece of bologna in the toe of her red high-heeled shoe. On Wednesday she told about a mysterious truck dumping a mountain of rocks in her driveway. The neighborhood kids climbed and played on it until the truck came back to move the mountain to the right address.

2 Mrs. Evans had a million funny stories. But Rory couldn’t think of even one to tell.

3 “It’s time again for our Funny-but-True stories,” announced Mrs. Evans on Thursday. “Who has one today?”

4 Rory slumped in his chair.

5 “I have a Funny-but-True!” cried Dana, waving wildly. “My big sister lost her new diamond engagement ring. She was really worried. My mom looked in all the places my sister had been. And there it was in a basket of laundry, sparkling in the dirty socks!”

6 The class smiled, and some people chuckled. Rory leaned forward and plopped his chin on his desk. Nothing funny ever happened to him.

7 Friday’s Funny-but-True was the best one yet. Tad told how his sister had found a hairy black tarantula the size of her hand in the bathroom medicine chest. After she was through screaming her head off, she decided to keep the spider for a pet. Rory sighed. The class would laugh about that one all through lunch recess. Somewhere in his life there had to be one Funny-but-True story. But Rory knew his weekend would be just the same old boring thing.

8 Rory’s dad promised they would try out the new dome tent in the backyard Friday night. “Just my luck,” thought Rory when a lightning storm blew up. He shuffled into the house to find his dad had turned it into a campground. The new tent filled up the living room like a big blue elephant. “What next?” thought Rory.

9 On Saturday, Rory’s four-year-old sister decided to see if her baby bunny could swim. Just in time Rory saved the soggy bunny from a bucket of water. While Mom gently blow-dried the little rabbit, he explained to his sister that bunnies can’t swim. “Silly kid,” thought Rory.

10 On Sunday Rory and his family piled into the car and headed for Grandma’s house. Passing drivers stared and pointed. When they got there, Rory discovered that their cat, Tiger, had ridden to Grandma’s on the roof of the car. “Dumb cat,” thought Rory.

11 “Time for Funny-but-Trues!” said Mrs. Evans on Monday. Rory looked around the room. He was sure Dana or Tad had another great story, but nobody spoke up.

12 “Rory, how about you?” asked Mrs. Evans.

13 Rory shook his head. “Nothing funny ever happens to me.”

14 “Oh, I bet funny things happen all the time,” said Mrs. Evans.

15 “Tell us about your weekend.”

16 Rory told about sleeping in a tent in the living room. The class looked surprised. He saw a few smiles. Next he told about the bunny’s swimming lessons. A few people giggled. When he told about Tiger riding on the roof of the car all the way to Grandma’s house, the class broke into roars of laughter.

17 Rory tried, but he couldn’t stop laughing either.

Part 2: Tatenda teaches his town

"Tatenda Teaches His Town" by Cecil Dzwowa

1 Like many families in Sanyati, a small countryside town in western Zimbabwe¹, Tatenda’s family does not have a television. One day after school, Tatenda arrived home tired and decided to rest on the sofa. But just before he sat down, he noticed something unusual in the house. “At first, I thought Dad had bought a television set, but when my mother said it was a computer, I was disappointed.”

2 It’s not that Tatenda didn’t like computers; he just didn’t know how to use them.

3 For almost two weeks, the gift lay idle in the house. Tatenda and his father didn’t even know how to turn it on. “Nobody in our neighborhood knew how to operate a computer,” Tatenda said.

4 But things changed when Amina, a young family friend, came from Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital city, to visit. Amina knew all about computers and was a good teacher, too.

¹Zimbabwe: a country in Africa

Pressing the Wrong Buttons

5 At first, Tatenda and Amina were frustrated as Tatenda struggled to learn. “I was always pressing the wrong buttons,” Tatenda remembered. “But I kept on going because I was eager to learn.” Amina realized then that she could not keep Tatenda away from the computer. After three weeks, Tatenda mastered some computer basics, such as opening and closing files. But he was taking a long time to learn.

6 Tatenda kept on practicing after Amina left. His speed slowly improved. By the time Amina returned, Tatenda felt comfortable with the computer.

7 Meanwhile, Tatenda’s friends wondered what had happened to him. Tatenda had not told them about his new gadget. He no longer played soccer after school like he used to. “Even if he came, he did not spend much time with us. He always had an excuse for going back home,” his friend Saidi said.

8 Tatenda’s friends worried. Were Tatenda’s parents preventing him from playing with them? Did one of them do something wrong? Did Tatenda have new friends?

9 One day, Saidi, along with two other friends, Themba and Solomon, surprised Tatenda at home. When they arrived, Tatenda was so busy on the computer that he did not hear them. His mother opened the door and let his friends inside. They couldn’t believe what they saw — a computer and Tatenda operating it.

10 “It was too late,” Tatenda recalled. “My secret was out.”

Master of the Keys

11 But it was a new beginning for the three friends. After that surprise visit, they came to see Tatenda work on the computer. Then Tatenda let them press a button or two and shake the mouse for fun. Slowly, he taught them how to use the computer. Saidi took about three months to learn the basics; Themba, about four months; and Solomon, a year.

12 It wasn’t long before the neighborhood kids wanted to learn, too! “There were so many kids coming to see him that we had to move the computer out of his room into a bigger room,” his mother said.

13 And even more kids came. Tatenda worried. The computer began to experience problems because the kids were pressing too many buttons. So he came up with a plan. He began charging for lessons. But this did not stop more kids from coming. Those whose parents did not have money paid with chickens or goats.

14 Tatenda has taught computer skills to 30 students from his local school, and the number continues to grow. There are 600 students there and no computer. Two of the teachers at his school are also his students. “He is a bright kid and a good teacher,” said Mrs. Magumise, one of Tatenda’s schoolteachers.

15 With the money earned from teaching, Tatenda has bought a television and radio for his family. And he plans to buy a new computer. He also plans to keep on teaching. The people of Sanyati couldn’t be more pleased. Tatenda has single-handedly introduced computers to his town and is simply known there as “Teacher.”

2024 NFL Draft grades: Bears land pair of A's for top-10 duo in Round 1

Rob Rang

The 2024 NFL Draft has finally arrived! FOX Sports draft expert Rob Rang is here to analyze and grade every first-round pick.

1. Chicago Bears (from Carolina): Caleb Williams , QB, USC

Rang: A gifted and natural playmaker who boasts exceptional accuracy in the pocket and on the move, Williams has all the physical traits needed to become an NFL superstar. Two concerns: He needs to clean up his ball security (led the NCAA in fumbles in 2023), and some question his leadership ability. New Bears OC Shane Waldron helped Geno Smith earn Pro Bowl honors in Seattle the past two years. The Bears are getting a more gifted prospect in Williams, who should enjoy immediate success.

2. Washington Commanders : Jayden Daniels , QB, LSU

Rang: The reigning Heisman Trophy winner offers a dazzling combination of slithery scrambling ability and deep-ball accuracy that make him a nightmare to defend. He is a polarizing prospect among scouts due to his relatively slim frame and the fact that his production at LSU was undeniably boosted by an exceptional receiving corps, but Daniels was a game-changer even back at Arizona State and consistently progressed throughout college. For a defensive-minded head coach like Dan Quinn, it is easy to understand why the Commanders see Daniels' maturity and dual-threat ability as the perfect leader for Washington's rebuild.

LSU HC Brian Kelly on what makes Jayden Daniels so special

LSU HC Brian Kelly on what makes Jayden Daniels so special

3. New England Patriots : Drake Maye , QB, UNC

Rang: The physical prototype with a strapping frame, strong and accurate arm and underrated athleticism, Maye might be a bit unpolished but he showed resiliency and grit as a two-year starter at UNC, fighting through a change at offensive coordinator and average talent around him. That grit will help him in New England, which currently has one of the least impressive rosters in the NFL. Maye has the physical traits and intangibles to project as a high-end NFL starter, but might require some patience. That makes sense for new general manager Eliot Wolf and head coach Jerod Mayo, as the Patriots turn the page from the Bill Belichick era.

4. Arizona Cardinals : Marvin Harrison Jr ., WR, Ohio State

Rang: So polished his sweat could shine furniture, it is easy to see the Hall of Fame bloodlines when evaluating Harrison. He is a snappy route-runner with soft, reliable hands and remarkable body control. Harrison disappointed some by electing not to participate in any of the pre-draft workouts, but he didn't have to. Harrison is the safest prospect in this class and a strong candidate for Offensive Rookie of the Year with Kyler Murray funneling him the ball.

Marvin Harrison Jr. Highlights

Marvin Harrison Jr. Highlights

5. Los Angeles Chargers : Joe Alt , OT, Notre Dame

Rang: The most polished offensive lineman of this class whose NFL bloodlines are obvious — both in terms of his rare size and technique — Alt is a pillar to build around. His selection at No. 5 overall to the Chargers comes as a bit of a surprise as the club already boasts a Pro Bowl left tackle in Rashawn Slater. Alt could theoretically move to the right side or Jim Harbaugh may view Slater as a guard convert, as many scouts did when Slater entered the league out of Northwestern . Some will quibble with this selection. I see it as the perfect foundation for what Harbaugh is building in L.A.

6. New York Giants : Malik Nabers , WR, LSU

Rang: With all due respect to fellow top-10 talents Marvin Harrison Jr. and Rome Odunze , Nabers is the most electric receiver in this class, possessing an exceptional combination of burst, elusiveness and breakaway speed. It's been impossible to fairly evaluate Daniel Jones with so few playmakers at receiver. Nabers is the star the Giants have been missing and resets the clock on Jones.

7. Tennessee Titans : JC Latham , OT, Alabama

Rang: Physically speaking, Latham is the most dominant offensive lineman in a draft boasting as much talent as any I've seen in nearly a quarter-century of evaluating prospects. His massive size and power make him a Day 1 standout with All-Pro potential. If Will Levis is going to be a star, he needs protection, and Latham is the road-grader to help Tennessee move on from Derrick Henry .

8. Atlanta Falcons : Michael Penix, QB, Washington

Rang: Of all the scenarios I imagined for Penix prior to the draft, this might be the most shocking given Atlanta's massive deal with Kirk Cousins . That, however, is no slight to Penix, the most gifted pocket passer in this class, boasting an absolute howitzer for a left arm. He is a quality athlete but is at his best when allowed to survey the field, showing the awareness and precision that translate to the NFL.

9. Chicago Bears : Rome Odunze, WR, Washington

Rang: A classic split end with great size, speed and timing to win on contested throws, Odunze is the old - school star of this receiver class — boasting the talent and dependability on and off the field to be a longtime fixture. Adding Odunze to a receiving corps that already boasts a legitimate speedster in D.J. Moore and one of the best slots in the league in Keenan Allen gives Caleb Williams the stellar pass-catching corps (along with tight end Cole Kmet ) to splash immediately.

Rome Odunze Highlights

Rome Odunze Highlights

10. Minnesota Vikings (from New York Jets): J.J. McCarthy , QB, Michigan

Rang: A dominant defense and run-heavy offense provided McCarthy limited opportunities to pad his stats, but when he was called upon to make important throws, he showed zip, accuracy, mobility and mettle. He does not possess the howitzer of some of the other quarterbacks of this class. However, leadership and charisma matter at quarterback, and McCarthy has perhaps the best combination of that in this year's class. Few would recognize that more than a former quarterback — like Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell.

11. New York Jets (from Minnesota): Olumuyiwa Fashanu , OT, Penn State

Rang: Protecting Aaron Rodgers is priority No. 1, and Fashanu possesses the size and agility every scout is looking for in a blindside tackle. He isn't as physical as the first two tackles selected — which could lead to issues in the NFL — but a quick processor like Rodgers should aid his transition. Still, this isn't a selection I love, especially given that a quality security blanket like Brock Bowers is still on the board.

12. Denver Broncos : Bo Nix , QB, Oregon

Rang: From a scheme and personality perspective, Nix is a terrific fit in Denver as Sean Payton requires his quarterbacks to be quick processors with mobility. Nix, of course, entered the draft as the most experienced quarterback in the class and 152 overall scores (38 on the ground) over his career. He's also as grounded and humble as it gets. Nix does not possess as strong of an arm as most of the five other quarterbacks who have already been selected, however, so perhaps the Broncos are banking on the thin air in Denver to keep his receivers happy.

13. Las Vegas Raiders : Brock Bowers, TE, Georgia

Rang: The reigning Mackey Award winner and a rare three-time All-American, Bowers is more decorated than a wedding cake, making him perhaps the perfect addition to a town as glitzy as Las Vegas. Bowers is no roll of the dice, however. He's cat-quick with supremely reliable hands and the contact balance of a running back. The AFC West already boasts a superstar tight end in Kansas City's Travis Kelce, but the Raiders just added the next one in Bowers.

14. New Orleans Saints : Taliese Fuaga , OT, Oregon State

Rang: With the long-term health of Ryan Ramczyk in question, the Saints were thought to be considering an offensive lineman early and they were fortunate to have arguably the best run blocker of the draft fall into their lap. Fuaga, at 6-foot-6 and 324 pounds, is shockingly quick off the ball and adjusts to moving targets like a fighter pilot. He's stout and agile in pass protection, as well, and earned the top grade among all offensive linemen at this year's Senior Bowl.

15. Indianapolis Colts : Laiatu Latu , Edge, UCLA

Rang: Given all of his success — Latu was honored with the Ted Hendricks Award as the nation's top defensive end, the Vince Lombardi Award as the nation's top defensive lineman, the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year and the Polynesian Defensive Player of the Year honors — it is appropriate that he was the first defender off the board in the 2024 NFL Draft. From a pure football perspective, Latu is the most productive and polished edge rusher in this class with Rookie of the Year and eventual Pro Bowl upside.

16. Seattle Seahawks : Byron Murphy II , DT, Texas

Rang: Voted the Big 12's Defensive Lineman of the Year in his first season as a starter, Murphy's game screams untapped potential. His explosive quickness, agility and natural leverage advantage make him impossible to block one-on-one. The issue I have with this selection for Seattle is the scheme fit, as the Seahawks are expected to feature more of a three-man front boasting defensive tackles with longer arms and whose game is all physicality. Murphy's addition does make the Seahawks' defense more dangerous and versatile, though.

17. Minnesota Vikings (from Jacksonville): Dallas Turner , Edge, Alabama

Rang: Seeking to replace longtime star Danielle Hunter , the Vikings got a little lucky in this draft with Turner — the elite athlete among these edge rushers — falling into their lap. Turner is tantalizing with his burst, bend and upside. He's not yet very instinctive or technically refined, however, and might need some time to put it all together. Often compared to his college predecessor, Will Anderson Jr . of the Houston Texans , Turner actually projects as an even better pass rusher than the reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year. But he isn't nearly as good (at least not yet) against the run.

18. Cincinnati Bengals : Amarius Mims , OT, Georgia

Rang: Given its early run on quarterbacks and offensive players, in general, the 2024 NFL Draft has already proven unprecedented. Perhaps then it is appropriate that Mims — who started just eight games at Georgia — is a top-20 draft pick. As one might expect with a player so inexperienced, there are some flaws in Mims' game. But these issues appear correctable with coaching and experience. There is no denying that Mims, just 21 years old, lacks game film. The tape he does have is pristine, though. There is risk in selecting a player so young and inexperienced, but his combination of length, agility and strength remind me of former Cowboys All-Pro Tyron Smith .

19. Los Angeles Rams : Jared Verse , Edge, Florida State

Rang: While Aaron Donald's retirement certainly created a massive hole in the middle of the Rams' defense, there isn't a player in this draft (or many others) as gifted as the future Hall of Famer. Adding juice to the Rams' pass rush on the outside makes perfect sense, especially when they play the run as passionately and effectively as Verse. Powerful and intense, Verse brings talent and leadership to a defense looking for some stars to step up.

20. Pittsburgh Steelers : Troy Fautanu , OT, Washington

Rang: Fautanu is about as pro-ready as it gets, blending quickness, power and technique to consistently win at the line of scrimmage as well as while on the move. While Washington was beaten up front in the national title game loss to Michigan, Fautanu quietly was the most impressive lineman for either team. Whether at left tackle or left guard, Fautanu is a plug-and-play NFL starter who, barring injury, should be a longtime anchor. Slid inside to guard, he could be the second coming of David DeCastro.

21. Miami Dolphins : Chop Robinson , Edge, Penn State

Rang: Given how explosive the Miami Dolphins' offense can be, it makes sense to boost a pass rush to punish opposing quarterbacks attempting to keep up, especially with former first-round edge rusher Jaelen Phillips struggling to stay healthy. Robinson explodes off the ball like he has springs in his shoes. While the splash is undeniable, his iffy productivity is worrisome. In a position group full of boom-or-bust prospects, Robinson is the biggest lottery ticket of them all.

22. Philadelphia Eagles : Quinyon Mitchell , CB, Toledo

Rang: While Power 5 corners Terrion Arnold and Nate Wiggins generated most of the buzz in the pre-draft process, Mitchell was undeniably the best, most complete cornerback in the country over the past two seasons, during which he recorded an eye-popping 44 pass breakups. Any doubts about his level of competition were erased with stellar performances at the Senior Bowl and combine. He is the first Toledo Rocket to earn a first-round pick since 1993. Kudos to Eagles GM Howie Roseman, among the most aggressive draft-day traders - for holding out and not giving up picks needlessly, while still adding the year's top corner.

23. Jacksonville Jaguars (from Minnesota via Cleveland through Houston): Brian Thomas, Jr., WR, LSU

I love this selection for the Jaguars, especially after trading down. It isn't often that a receiver leads the nation in touchdown receptions and remains nationally underrated, but that might be the case with Thomas, who was often overshadowed by his Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback and fellow future first-round wideout (Daniels and Nabers). Thomas' relative inexperience means that he's a little less polished than the previous three receivers drafted — he only ran a few different routes for LSU — but make no mistake, Thomas is the star Trevor Lawrence has been waiting for.

24. Detroit Lions (from Dallas): Terrion Arnold, CB, Alabama

A former safety who still plays with the physicality you'd expect at that position, Arnold is perhaps the perfect match of this year's cornerback class for Dan Campbell and the suddenly hyper-aggressive Lions. Arnold is the latest of the great Alabama defensive backs, tying for the SEC lead in pass breakups (17) and interceptions (five) this past season. He should only get better behind a formidable Detroit pass rush.

25. Green Bay Packers : Jordan Morgan , OL, Arizona Wildcats

The Packers needed to restock their offensive line, given the release last month of long-time starting left tackle David Bahktiari. They could see Morgan as a similarly gifted player. His agility and physicality certainly are NFL caliber, though he possesses relatively short arms (33") given his 6-foot-5, 315-pound frame, which may push him inside to guard. I viewed Morgan as more of a second-day prospect, though he possesses the toughness and physical playing style to project as a long-time starter, even if it is ultimately inside.

26. Tampa Bay Buccaneers : Graham Barton , OL, Duke

Rang: Barton is arguably the most versatile offensive lineman in this class, projecting nicely to guard or center (where he was a Freshman All-American) after starring at left tackle the past three years against quality competition. He has a quality combination of size, athleticism, technique and grit — projecting similarly in many ways to recently retired center Ryan Jensen.

27. Arizona Cardinals (from Houston): Darius Robinson , DL, Missouri

Rang: All but one of Robinson's career-high 8.5 sacks in 2023 came off the edge, but his unique frame and game will allow him to play up and down the defensive line in the NFL. He promises to be a polarizing prospect among scouts and coaches as some will see an ascending player with Pro Bowl upside and others a considerable project with no clear-cut positional fit. However, with a defensive-minded head coach like Jonathan Gannon calling the shots, it is easy to see how Robinson — a two-time captain — could blossom.

28. Kansas City Chiefs (from Buffalo): Xavier Worthy , WR, Texas

Rang: In 4.21 seconds, the world learned about Worthy, now the fastest player in NFL Combine history. Pairing him with Patrick Mahomes should send a similar shockwave across the league as this is a Tyreek Hill -caliber athlete. Worthy is best known for his straight-line speed but he's also a surprisingly savvy route-runner who could help a Chiefs squad that needs a lot of help at receiver given the questions surrounding Rashee Rice .

Grade: B+

Quinn Ewers throws a 42-yard DOT to Xavier Worthy as Texas extends lead over Houston

Quinn Ewers throws a 42-yard DOT to Xavier Worthy as Texas extends lead over Houston

29. Dallas Cowboys ( from Detroit): Tyler Guyton , OT, Oklahoma

Rang: The Cowboys know Guyton better than most, as his career was spent relatively close to the team headquarters, beginning his career at TCU prior to transferring to Oklahoma. He's long, agile and versatile, projecting nicely to either tackle position. Dallas needed help at left tackle with Tyron Smith now a member of the New York Jets. Guyton has the traits to bank on but his struggles with consistency make this a gamble.

30. Baltimore Ravens : Nate Wiggins, CB, Clemson

Rang: Year after year, the Ravens land quality prospects at extreme value. That is the case again this year with Wiggins. Some apparently overthought his relative slight frame and ignored his elite feet and smooth hips. Wiggins is the best pure man-to-man cover corner in this class.

31. San Francisco 49ers : Ricky Pearsall , WR, Florida

Rang: This is a fascinating selection for the 49ers, as it just adds to the speculation that Brandon Aiyuk’s time in San Francisco may be ending. Pearsall is a terrific addition to San Francisco’s offense, showing not only a similar blend of speed and elusiveness as Aiyuk but strong hands and body control to make circus catches look routine.

32. Carolina Panthers (from Buffalo via Kansas City): Xavier Legette , WR, South Carolina

The top priority in Carolina is helping Bryce Young. Free agency was spent bolstering the offensive line, and Legette has the size and strength to almost play the receiver position like a blocker, bullying opponents with his playing style that has earned him comparisons to DK Metcalf and A.J. Brown. Legette can track the ball over his shoulder but he’s especially effective on the short and intermediate routes that Young throws very well.

Eagles, Falcons tampering allegations: NFL resolution not expected before 2024 draft, per report

Cousins revealed he communicated with atlanta's athletic trainer and head of pr before new league year.

cousins-us1.jpg

Two of the most notable free agency moves -- quarterback Kirk Cousins leaving the Minnesota Vikings to sign with the Atlanta Falcons on a four-year, $180 deal and running back Saquon Barkley departing from the New York Giants to join the Philadelphia Eagles on a three-year, $37.8 million contract -- may soon come with consequences.

Both signings may come with draft pick losses after allegations of tampering surfaced . Although, Atlanta's and Philly's 2024 draft picks will remain untouched, as the NFL's review into the matter is ongoing, and will not conclude this week, per NFL Media.

Cousins may have accidentally implicated himself at his introductory press conference as players aren't allowed to have first person contact with teams during the legal tampering period before the start of the new league year.

"There's great people here," Cousins said . "And it's not just the football team. I mean, I'm looking at the support staff. Meeting -- calling, yesterday, calling our head athletic trainer, talking to our head of P.R. I'm thinking, we got good people here. And that's exciting to be a part of."

Barkley's college head coach at Penn State, James Franklin, alluded to Barkley and Eagles general manager Howie Roseman speaking on the phone during the legal tampering period.

"For him now to come back and be able to play within the state, in Philadelphia, he said that was one of the first things that Howie said to him on the phone as part of his sales pitch to him was not only the Philadelphia Eagles and that but obviously the connection with Penn State and the fan base as well," Franklin said, via  to ESPN .

According to an ESPN report , discipline is coming soon with the punishment likely to be more harsh for the Falcons given Cousins on-the-record statement. A couple tampering punishments have been levied in the last 10 years with the Miami Dolphins and Kansas City Chiefs on the receiving end of those consequences.

The Dolphins lost their 2023 first-round draft choice and a 2024 third-rounder for tampering with Tom Brady and Sean Payton three different times from 2019 through 2022. Owner Stephen Ross was fined $1.5 million, and team vice chair and limited partner Bruce Beal received a $500,000 fine.

Kansas City lost their 2016 third-rounder and a 2017 sixth-round choice for tampering with wide receiver Jeremy Maclin in 2015. The Chiefs were hit with a $250,000 fine, and head coach Andy Reid ($75,000) as well as then-general manager John Dorsey ($25,000) were also fined.
