Important Notes:

As a finance and accounting student looking to get good grades, it is essential to develop new ideas and experiment with existing finance and accounting theories – i.e., to add value and interest in your research topic.

The finance and accounting field is vast and interrelated to many other academic disciplines like civil engineering ,  construction ,  law , engineering management , healthcare , mental health , artificial intelligence , tourism , physiotherapy , sociology , management , project management , and nursing . That is why it is imperative to create a project management dissertation topic that is articular, sound, and actually solves a practical problem that may be rampant in the field.

We can’t stress how important it is to develop a logical research topic based on your entire research. There are several significant downfalls to getting your topic wrong; your supervisor may not be interested in working on it, the topic has no academic creditability, the research may not make logical sense, and there is a possibility that the study is not viable.

This impacts your time and efforts in  writing your dissertation  as you may end up in the cycle of rejection at the initial stage of the dissertation. That is why we recommend reviewing existing research to develop a topic, taking advice from your supervisor, and even asking for help in this particular stage of your dissertation.

Keeping our advice in mind while developing a research topic will allow you to pick one of the best finance and accounting dissertation topics that fulfil your requirement of writing a research paper and adds to the body of knowledge.

Therefore, it is recommended that when finalizing your dissertation topic, you read recently published literature to identify gaps in the research that you may help fill.

Remember- dissertation topics need to be unique, solve an identified problem, be logical, and be practically implemented. Please look at some of our sample finance and accounting dissertation topics to get an idea for your own dissertation.

210 Exciting Project Topics For Financial Accounting & Other Research Works

A project topic is a brief description or title that summarizes the main subject or focus of a research project. It provides an overview of the research question, objectives, scope, and methodology that will be used to investigate a particular issue or topic within a particular field of study.

Choosing a good project topic is an important part of the research process, as it sets the direction and scope of the research. A well-defined project topic can help researchers focus their efforts, identify key research questions, and determine the appropriate methods to use in their research. It can also help them to identify gaps in existing knowledge, explore new areas of inquiry, and make a contribution to the field of study.

Choosing the best project topic in Accounting will be your first challenge. Here are some suggestions:

  • Choose the topic that interests you! The research process is more relevant if you are interested in your subject.
  • Limit your topic to something you can manage.
  • If your topic is too broad, you will find too much information and you won’t be able to focus.
  • Background reading can help you select and narrow the scope of your topic.
  • Review the topic selection instructions in your task. Ask your teacher or lecturer for suggestions.
  • Review necessary materials and texts to update your knowledge of the topic and task.
  • Talk to a friend about project ideas. They can help you focus on your topic by discussing issues that didn’t occur to you at first.
  • Think about who, what, when, where, and why:
  • WHY did you choose the topic? What are you interested in? Do you have an opinion on the problem?
  • WHO are the information providers on this topic? Who could publish information about this? Who is affected by the topic? Do you know organizations or institutions related to this topic?
  • WHAT are the main questions on this topic? Is there a discussion on this topic? Several issues and perspectives need to be considered?
  • WHERE does your topic matter: locally, nationally, or internationally? Are there specific places that the topic concerns?
  • WHEN was your topic important? Is it a current fact or a historical problem? Want to compare your topic over time?

The essence of research is not just to re-write what has been written or rephrase what has been researched but to identify a gap in a particular concept, refer to existing literature relating to the concept, comment on existing literature to prove the existence of such gap, and engage adequate measures to collect, analyze and interpret data to give sufficient suggestions that can close up the identified gap and in extension add to the body of knowledge.

It is therefore necessary to engage in an accounting research project to close up an existing gap in major accounting concepts. This will set the basic guidelines for choosing a research topic. Choosing an accounting research topic has been one of the major issues that stare at the face of students or researchers. Two basic rules of thumb for choosing a project topic are researching something you are familiar with or choosing something completely different and new. Ask yourself what is relevant in accounting today? Many issues in accounting are no longer relevant today. For instance, you can’t choose a topic that will be talking about the Statement of Accounting Standards (SASs) as Nigeria has now adopted the International Accounting Standards (IASs). Office accounting like clerical work is almost being replaced by digital accounting and we have the likes of accounting software, blockchain, and other digital platforms that seem to extinct primitive accounting. Therefore, consider a topic that is relevant to the age.

For instance;

  • The Impact of Accounting Software on Effective Financial Reporting in Small Enterprises in Nigeria.
  • The Effect of Adopting IFRS for Small Businesses on the Performance of Small and Medium Scale Enterprises in Nigeria.
  • Cloud Accounting and its Impact on the Efficient Management of Business Records. A Case of Consulting Firms in Nigeria

All these and many more are recent trends not just in accounting as a course or profession but in the world of technology and business. This will indeed expose the researcher to many views on these relevant areas and add to the body of knowledge already existing. Think about some relevant accounting project topics and write them down; you’ll make a great deal of impact with that!

  • CHOOSING A RESEARCH TOPIC IN ACCOUNTING OR BANKING AND FINANCE, AREAS TO CONSIDER

by AnnyDoxa | Sep 25, 2018 | Academic research writing tips | 0 comments

The relevance of any research project is a function of the focus of it study. It is imperative that while choosing a research topic for your research project, you consider issues that are contemporary and trending, so as to add laudable value to the existing body of knowledge and recommend attainable solution to prevailing issues. In this paper, we shall be considering topical and trending issues in business, accounting and finance that is worth researching. Just hang on and catch the gist!

The following areas shall be considered:

  • Entrepreneurship
  • Business and Environment

research topics under accounting and finance

Technology : it is very obvious to all the galloping rate at which technology is advancing. In the area of accounting, business and finance, this challenges a lot of traditional approaches. This cut across applications, software, internet use etc.

In 2017, QuickBooks Online recorded about 2.55 million subscribers worldwide in the first quarter. New accounting software are invented while existing ones are being improved such that it becomes user friendly to all folks from different walks of life and not just accountants. Again, QuickBooks introduced the QuickBooks Assistant which is a live chatbot system that performs some manual jobs like giving feedback or reply to questions asked.

Most business owners believe that ten (10) years from now, they will not have need of personal accountants. This poses a lot of questions; What is the fate of accountant in the next 20 years? How should the curriculum of accounting studies be adjusted to provide for this challenges? On and on it goes. This is critical and worth researching on. As a business and accounting student, you could consider the following topics:

  • Accountants, Accounting Applications and Software; an evaluation of the role of accountants in a technology driven age.
  • The impact of business and accounting educational curriculum on the development of a technology-ready workforce.
  • The threat of technology to the role of accountants: an assessment of the relevance of accountants in the business world of technologies.
  • The impact of business and accounting software on the performance and effective management of 21st century businesses.
  • These and many more, can be developed and researched upon!

Entrepreneurship : With the high rate of unemployment in Nigeria and other African countries, there have been so much emphasis on entrepreneurship and promotion of personal businesses. Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), governments and other private individuals are constantly coming up with programmes to encourage the establishment of personal businesses in Nigeria. This is profound because it signals a lot.

The Intuit 2020 report forecasts that freelancers will represent 43% of the workforce population by 2020. This has a lot of implications; first, there will be a great number of employers; second, most employees that were previously subject to Pay-As-You-Earn tax or withholding tax would avoid this as most will be business owners and will only be paying company tax. How will tax accountants manage this? What effect will the proliferation of self-employment have on the business environment? When everyone is an employer of labour, who will be available for processes? What kind of economy will it lead to? This is indeed worth researching. You could consider areas like:

  • The impact of entrepreneurship on a country’s performance.
  • The challenges of entrepreneurship in an economy.
  • Outsourcing and Consulting: a product of multiple self-employed businesses.
  • The impact of multiplied self-businesses on the revenue generation of Nigeria: an assessment of the most effect tax system for self-employed and personal businesses.

Business and Environment : there have been so much emphasis recently on the role of environmentally friendly approaches by firms. Several policy making bodies and professional bodies have come up with some requirements to ensure that while a firm takes and makes from its environment, it doesn’t hurt its environment. This has given birth to the concept of corporate social responsibilities, environmentally friendly approaches for firms, environmental accounting etc.

This was particularly consequential to the obvious environmental degradation of the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, as a result of the activities of oil producing companies. This is also worth researching on and you could consider the following line of studies:

  • The impact of Business and Reputation and Corporate Image on the performance and continuity of a firm.
  • Environmental Accounting: An integral part of financial reports
  • Environmental Accounting and Strategic Business Decisions: an assessment of the need of environmental accounting report for informed decision making by businesses.
  • The impact of corporate social responsibility on SMEs market share.

You can think of more and add to this!

Currencies : this is also another critical contemporary issue in business. The emergence of cryptocurrencies like bitcoin, onecoin etc. has had much impact on businesses over the years. This became more profound in Nigeria by 2016 when Ponzi scheme became viral. This has many implications – to businesses, accountants, governments etc.

Cryptocurrencies came with its own ledger system – a digital ledger system like blockchain. Also, cryptocurrencies in one way or the other challenges the place of exchange differences in foreign transactions. Even though these currencies are bought by different denominational currencies, their value when bought remain the same the globally. It also eradicates the need for intermediaries like financial institutions in the place of exchange. Many more issues are involved in cryptocurrencies that are worth researching and you could consider the following areas of study:

  • The impact of cryptocurrencies on international businesses.
  • Financial Institutions and Cryptocurrencies: an evaluation of the role of financial institutions in a cryptocurrency economy
  • Digital Ledger System: a threat or opportunity to accountants.
  • The Pros and Cons of Cryptocurrency to a developing economy.

Of course the list still goes on; you can think of more. This may not be exhaustive but I believe it is incisive and can serve as a foundation to build upon in developing researchable topics that are contemporary and trending. You can also refer to research consultants like runmyresearch.com for professional advice to guide you in choosing your research topic.

Thank you and don’t fail to drop your comment and questions if you have any.

What role would mayors play under a Labour government?

The opposition has promised a wave of devolution in England.

By Jack Shaw

research topics under accounting and finance

In Gordon Brown’s recent report of his Commission on the UK’s Future, the former prime minister suggested that a democratic second chamber – a so-called assembly of the nations and regions – should be established by the Labour Party if it wins the general election.

According to the proposals, mayors should be able to participate in a reformed House of Lords – though in what form remains unclear. Constitutional questions have already been raised over whether mayors should be rooted in both the sub-regions they’re elected to serve and in Westminster.

Brown’s recommendations also suggest the assembly should be complemented by a council of the nations and regions to promote coordination between the respective tiers of government within the UK. But while the Lords requires reform, and a Labour government would need to work more closely with mayors, having the latter join the upper house solves neither of those challenges.

Labour already has a reasonable track record on reform of a House that was, until the House of Lords Act 1999, home to hundreds of hereditary peers. The act reduced their number to 92. The House of Lords Appointments Commission was established to vet candidates, though its efficacy has been called into question on more than one occasion, not least following the peerage for the Russian-British newspaper owner Evgeny Lebedev. Labour has also flirted with electing – rather than appointing – Lords in the past, with a published white paper on reform in 2007 overtaken by the global financial crisis.

Labour’s emerging plans on Lords reform – to strengthen the House of Lords Appointments Commission, introduce a mandatory retirement age, and abolish hereditary peerages – today are arguably less ambitious than in the Noughties. In the preface of the 2007 white paper, Jack Straw, then leader of the House of Commons, wrote that “ending this anomaly” of hereditary peers “does not go far enough to ensure that Britain’s second chamber is fit to meet the demands and expectations of this century”.

But Labour’s proposals for Lords reform, at least in the immediate term, are sufficient. Instead of using up considerable governing capacity to push for more wholesale changes, Labour should focus on the second question raised by Brown: coordination between tiers of governance – and specifically the role of mayors.

[Read more: How radical will Keir Starmer be on constitutional reform? ]

While Labour has rightly placed improving the long-term performance of the economy at the centre of its missions, its capacity to boost growth is contingent on circumstances partially outside its direct control. This is because combined and local authorities will have to implement many policies: and mayors can play an important role in promoting economic growth in their sub-regions.

Labour mayors currently oversee many of England’s core cities – not least Bristol, Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool and Cambridge. They will, in theory, be tasked with delivering the growth policies Labour has envisioned, including its green prosperity plan.

For this reason, Labour will need to establish productive relationships with mayors and a wider coalition of actors whose actions Labour does not directly control. Unlike the Conservatives, Labour does formally acknowledge sub-regional governance within its party structures by having a local government representative on its shadow cabinet, but neither Labour nor the Conservatives have mayors in their cabinet teams – or anything approaching the formalised relationships that have been established with local authorities over the decades.

History suggests that strong or charismatic individuals have wielded significant power in driving devolution forward: Michael Heseltine, John Prescott, George Osborne, Michael Gove. While there is a sense that Labour acknowledges the role mayors can play in a Labour government, there isn’t a senior party figure in the shadow cabinet this priority coalesces around. The Centre for Cities think tank suggests that Ed Balls can be “Labour’s Michael Heseltine” – the former shadow chancellor has, like the former Thatcher-era environment secretary, worked extensively on the cause of narrowing regional inequalities. But Balls isn’t in parliament. Nor does he currently hold any elected office. In the absence of such a figure, Labour will need to govern through institutions instead.

The establishment of a codified forum through which differences can be articulated and resolved is in the interest of both a Labour government and its mayors. This forum – which the Times columnist Patrick Maguire dubs a “ super-cabinet ” of mayors – can add value to Labour’s policymaking, foster goodwill, promote collaboration, address political differences and support Labour in delivering its missions.

A more responsive centre requires pluralism, and voices from actors outside Westminster. There is precedent for this in the UK: figures from the devolved administrations in the Senned and Holyrood already sit on a joint ministerial committee with the UK government. But a similar vehicle does not exist for English sub-regional governance.

In turn, Labour must give mayors their backing and build a relationship with them that is based on parity. Labour must respect, for example, the fact that mayors have their own democratic mandate and will on occasion adopt positions at odds with the leadership. If Labour were to only support devolution on the condition that mayors agreed with ministers, then that is no devolution at all.

Labour equally cannot take the electoral success of its mayors for granted. In 2025, the seats occupied by Labour’s most vulnerable mayors – in the West of England, and Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, respectively – will be contested. On top of that, four new mayoral combined authorities will be created for the first time – in Norfolk, Suffolk, Hull and East Yorkshire, and Greater Lincolnshire. It is likely that new Conservative mayors will become important political forces and potential electoral assets for the Tory party in their regions.

Building relationships with mayors is essential if the next government is to capitalise on local governments’ ability to shape their economies. That will require building relationships that outlast individuals, and institutions that are well placed to take advantage of the new politics of devolution.
