Spider-Man: No Way Home: A Cinematic Triumph

Abstract (300 words maximum)

Spider-Man: No Way Home is a well-received superhero film released in December 2021. The movie centers on a young Peter Parker keeping his personal life together while facing multiversal threats with help from multiversal allies. The film is the end of the MCU Spider-Man trilogy that manages to include characters and narratives from the previous Spider-Man reboots; as such, the film is a sequel to all three Spider-Man movie sagas. This film’s central theme focuses on the burdens of a young man becoming a true superhero, or more famously known as “with great power comes great responsibility.” In this presentation, I will analyze the screenplay written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers and detail the film’s conflicts and character arcs, as well as other vital aspects of the screenplay and film. I will also compare and contrast the screenplay to the final theatrical film and discuss how the differences affect the overall story. Finally, I will address how the writers integrate into this new saga aspects of the stories from previously unconnected Spider-Man films. This film is an entertaining and complex triumph that earned overwhelmingly positive reviews from fans and critics alike, and this presentation will attempt to demonstrate the screenwriters’ role in that triumph.

Spider-man: across the spider-verse : release date, trailers, cast & more, a new teaser trailer reveals a league of extraordinary spider-men, references to spider-man: no way home , and the resurrection (and expansion) of a classic meme..

In a weekend filled with comic conventions, odd announcements about Daredevil, and a late appearance by The Matrix Resurrections , a surprise trailer took the Internet by storm in early December 2021: the first look at Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse . Granted, there was some warning on from producer Christopher Miller , but it still proved to be a gift in a month already filled with geeky presents like the other Spider-Man movie – the live action Spider-Man: No Way Home .

Across the Spider-Verse ’s teaser turned out to be a pleasant surprise. For one thing, it finally offered a title for a film previously known only as “ Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 .” Of course, no film gets produced in a vacuum, and there are plenty of other things we know about the project already, especially as Sony further clarified some things across various other presentation in 2022. So let’s take a look at what we know so far about Spider-Man: Across the Universe .

The plot of Across the Spider-Verse is still up for debate, but the name, the teaser, and the CinemaCon presentation certainly offer some clues. For one, it’s clear Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore ) will be going on an adventure to other realities instead of the problem dropping into his dimension — six realities to be exact, per Miller and his producer partner Phil Lord during the presentation. The actual footage seen in the teaser backs this up, with the second half offering a very stylized take on interdimensional travel.

The first half of the preview suggests a few things as well. For one: Miles is grounded. Presumably, he is in over his head again. We’re going to guess the problem occurred at school since Miles tells Gwen ( Hailee Steinfeld ) that his dorm at Visions Academy is much cooler than his childhood room. Gwen, meanwhile, is the star of the film’s opening minutes according to various accounts of footage screened at CinemaCon and subsequent presentations. She is seen battling the Vulture in her home dimension (Earth-65), but soon encounters Spider-Man 2099 ( Oscar Isaac ), who tells her the Vulture’s chaos came about because she left a portal between universes open after the events of Into the Spider-Verse . The pair also encounter a very pregnant Jessica Drew — aka Spider-Woman.

Reports also say Miles will be re-introduced in the sequel during a meeting of his parents with his guidance counselor that does not go well — something we see in the April trailer. This may contribute to why he’s home when Gwen reappears in the teaser. She soon convinces him to go out and about as Spider-Man, but his reticence to do so may be based in that scene with the counselor. No matter the issues in Miles’ life, Gwen takes him to a place where other Spider-Men from different universes gather — the concept of Spider-Man 2099.

There, he will reunite with Peter B. Parker and meet the likes Spider-Woman and Supaidaman (aka Japanese Spider-Man). The latter character is based on the late 1970s Spider-Man television series from Japan . In that program, a man named Takuya Yamashiro acquires spider-like powers, a costume, and a transforming robot from an alien. Yamashiro’s mission: defeat Professor Monster and the evil Iron Cross Army. The character is said to be part of the film and we can’t wait to see how all of its out-there ideas get conformed to Spider-Verse proportions. Considering the references to Spider-Man: No Way Home in the April trailer, it’s easy to imagine the jokes arising from the curious case of the Japanese Spider-Man.

But as the trailer also reveals, Spider-Man 2099 has little interest in seeing Miles join his league of Spider-folk. The issue: he always choses the needs of the few over the many. And it seems this will bring Miles and Spider-Man 2099 to blows. Will it lead to a rupture among the others?

The Spider-Verse As Setting

Part of the fun of sending Miles out into the wider Spider-Verse is realizing the different takes on the Spider-Man concept and setting. In fact, the film is said to lean heavily into the idea that each of the six universes will have its own, distinct look. The world of 2099, for example, is all tall spires and corporate autocracy. The look of Supaidaman’s universe will be heavily influenced by the Tokusatsu atmosphere of the 1970s Japanese Spider-Man show and similar programs.

Gwen’s world is also on the itinerary. And if it looks anything like the Spider-Gwen comics drawn by Robbi Rodriguez, it could rival Miles’s own world as a startlingly vivid place with more than a few obvious nods to the mainline Marvel Comics world. Other worlds could include the look of the 1990s Fox animated Spider-Man cartoon, the old Spider-Man series from which the popular double Spider-Man meme originates, and maybe even a live-action realm. Also, and this is complete speculation, wouldn’t it be wild if Miles, Gwen, and Spider-Man 2099 visit the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Although, some are suggesting that will be reserved for the third film.

Starring Across The Spider-Verse

Shameik Moore returns as Miles — sporting a new suit and symbol — as does Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen. Oscar Isaac will double down on his cameo appearance in Into the Spider-Verse as Spider-Man 2099. Jake Johnson is also set to return as Peter B. Parker, the middle-aged Spider-Man. It is unclear if we will see Spider-Man Noir ( Nicolas Cage ), Peni Parker ( Kimiko Glenn ), or Spider-Ham ( John Mulaney ) again, to say nothing of Aunt May ( Lily Tomlin ) or Mary Jane Parker ( Zoe Kravitz ), but anything is possible. Miles’s parents, Jefferson ( Brian Tyree Henry ) and Rio ( Luna Lauren Velez ) will be back, if just to ground him at the beginning of the film and face off against that guidance counselor. Newcomers include Shea Whigham as Captain George Stacy, Gwen’s father, and Jorma Taccone as a version of the Vulture seen on Earth-65, but not necessarily native to that reality.

Another new addition to the cast is Issa Rae as Jessica Drew, the original Spider-Woman. Created by Archie Goodwin and Marie Severin in 1977, the character was meant to stand far apart from Spider-Man, becoming a supporting character in Wolverine after her own series ended. She bounced around various comics throughout the ’90s before writer Brian Michael Bendis added her to the Avengers roster and made the character an important player in his Secret Invasion miniseries. It will be interesting to see how she meshes with the new Spider-Verse team and which of her various origins the filmmakers decide to use. In fact, there is room enough for her to be a minor antagonist before inevitably joining Miles and the others. Although, a clip featuring Jessica’s first moments in the film, screened at the Annecy Animation Film Festival in June 2022, indicates she will not only be heroic, but Gwen will be in awe of the fabulous Spider-Woman.

The festival also featured the first look at one of the films villains: The Spot. Created by Al Milgrom and Herb Trimpe, and voiced in the film by Jason Schwartzman , the character uses dimensional portals to get around, but also to obtain items or push adversaries very far away. It is unclear if he is part of the multiversal chaos or just an adversary Miles must deal with as part of his usual Spider-Man role. But considering his comic book origins include a connection to Wilson Fisk and a blackout, it is possible he is an ongoing after-effect of Into the Spider-Verse ‘s finale.

Behind The Spider-Verse

On the creative side of things, co-writer and producer Phil Lord returns – but this time, his usual writing partner, Christopher Miller, joins him on screenplay duties alongside fellow writer David Callaham . A whole new trio of directors take the helm on the visual front with Legend of Korra stalwart Joaquim Dos Santos , Soul co-director Kemp Powers , and Justin K. Thompson , production designer on the first film, taking over from Into the Spider-Verse ’s Bob Persichetti , Peter Ramsey , and Rodney Rothman . But if the teaser is any indication, the first film’s Oscar-winning style will remain. Long time Spider-Man producers Amy Pascal and Avi Arad are along for the ride, as is producer Christine Steinberg. Ramsey serves as an executive producer. In December of  2020, Daniel Pemberton revealed he will also be returning to provide music for the film.

Release Date, Sequel, And Spinoff

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse , originally slated for release on October 7, 2022, will now debut on June 2, 2023. The follow-up, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse — a title that suggests a potential MCU crossover — is scheduled for a March 29, 2024 launch. But that’s not all. Early in the sequel’s development, Pascal revealed the film will also serve as a launching pad for Spider-Women , an animated film focusing on Steinfeld’s Gwen, Rae’s Spider-Woman, and Silk, another Spider-themed hero who is also set to get her own animated television series from Lord and Miller. It is unclear if that version will be connected to Spider-Women , which will be written by Bek Smith and directed by Lauren Montgomery, but it indicates the Spider-Verse will be a well-established part of our film calendar in the decade to come.

Turns out inclusivity also means more people want to give you their money! The early box office figures for the new Spider-Man film — and the demographic data of moviegoers — paint a vivid picture.

Who is he? There are plenty of variations on who Spider-Man is , and now Miles Morales is getting the spotlight.

• You might be familiar with the original web slinging New York-based hero named Peter Parker. Miles is another variation of the hero in a different universe. He's a Puerto Rican, afro-Latino teenager from Brooklyn.
• While he's been part of the Marvel universe for years, he arguably made his biggest splash as the protagonist of the recent Spider-Man animated films, starting with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse , a sleeper hit from 2018 that won an Oscar for best animated feature and earned nearly $400 million worldwide at the box office.

What's the big deal? The most recent film in the series, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has made even bigger headlines and received rave reviews.

• The film grossed $208 million worldwide in its opening weekend, roughly three times as much as the opening of the first film, as reported by NPR's critic, Bob Mondello .
• And while in his review Mondello cites the inventive animation and plot as contributing to the success, he says that the diversity on screen was a huge draw for audiences.
• That ranges from the main hero portrayed by Shameik Moore, to the several Spider-women featured, as well as the India based Spider-guy, Pavitr Prabhakar.
• According to Mondello's reporting, the film opened strongly in 59 countries. In North America, exit tracking found that the audience was about one-third Latino and another third Black and Asian, diversity percentages far higher than for most superhero films.

What are people saying?

Here's what the co-director of the first film, Peter Ramsey, had to say about the significance of Miles in a 2019 interview with NPR :

This genre allows people to sort of project themselves onto these heroic figures who struggle with their own difficulties and own insecurities, [People of color] want to be part of the story, want to be part of the myth. If you can't be part of a myth like that, then what do you have in a culture?

And here's Mondello again, in his review of Across the Spider-Verse :

If the last film was a major reset for genre expectations, Across The Spider-Verse is an expansion for artistic ones, rich enough in feeling and character and innovative visuals to warrant — and I'm kind of astonished to be saying this — the second or even third visit that fans will want to give it. I may just join them.

So, what now?

• Across The Spider-Verse 's numbers put it alongside the big live action superhero blockbusters, something Mondello says is "mildly astonishing" for an animated film not made by Pixar or Disney.
• The release of the next sequel, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is slated for March 2024.

SONY PICTURES OPENS CINEMACON 2023 WITH EXCLUSIVE PEEKS AT THE LIKES OF SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE, KRAVEN THE HUNTER, DUMB MONEY, GRAN TURISMO, NAPOLEON, AND MORE!

CinemaCon, the largest theatrical exhibition convention in the world, opened on Monday, April 24h. This annual shindig takes place at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, NV, and prides itself on the latest and greatest in movie theater hardware but it’s also known for its legendary movie studio representation. Sony Pictures had the honor of hosting the opening night primetime slot and in addition to bringing plenty of footage from their upcoming slate, they also marched out the talent. The presentation began with a recorded message from Will Smith and Martin Lawrence from the set of the tentatively titled BAD BOYS 4. Their banter was brief but they were funny and quickly proved they still have plenty of BAD BOYS chemistry to spare. And in case you wondering, NO! There wasn’t a slap involved. Immediately following that cheeky Smith/Lawrence clip, Sony Pictures Chairman and CEO, Josh Greenstein was brought to the stage where he and a few of his colleagues, including the legendary Tom Rothman, welcomed attendees and preceded to give a look at a large chunk of their upcoming slate. We’ll give a bit of an overview here but it should be noted that we’ll refrain from spoilers at the request of the powers that be;

DUMB MONEY Director Craig Gillespie and star Paul Dano were on hand to give attendees a very early, very raw look at this upcoming true story about the chaos that ensued on Wall Street as a result of GameStop stock skyrocketing following a popular piece at Reddit. This comedy also stars Seth Rogen, Clancy Brown, and Shailene Woodley.

SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE Last year, Sony showed off nearly 15 minutes of INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE over a year early so given that the film is dropping in theaters this June, we were pretty confident we’d get another look here. Co-director Kemp Powers (here’s my dumb dad joke of the day; With great Powers comes great responsibility) was on hand with vocal cast members Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, and Issa Rae to talk about the highly anticipated sequel. Additionally, they brought along 14 minutes of mostly complete footage with them. As expected, on a technical level, this thing looks gorgeous and incorporates the same unique animation style that was at the heart of its wildly popular predecessor. Most of the footage we were treated to revolved around the bond between Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy and without giving anything pivotal away, their chemistry is spot on. We also got a couple of lovely moments between Miles and his adoring mom. One of the things that made the first film special was the fact that it offered up wonderful character beats and colorfully vibrant action in equal measure. INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE looks to do something similar and I can’t wait to see it when it drops in theaters on June 2nd.

KRAVEN THE HUNTER Pound for pound, this is probably the clip that got the loudest reaction from attendees, mostly because it was thought that Sony might not have anything to show from the film. Star Aaron Taylor Johnson sent along a recorded message and he certainly brought the energy as he talked about his excitement surrounding this Marvel property. He then went on to address the elephant in the room; Whether or not the movie would be rated R, to which he proclaimed; “Fuck yeah, it’s rated R!” This garnered one of the loudest (and most enthusiastic crowd responses) throughout the Sony Presentation. Johnson then introduced the premiere of the trailer and yes…It looks super R-rated! Violent action abounds in this fantastical story of Russian immigrant Sergei Kravinoff, a man who sets out to prove he is the greatest hunter in the world. KRAVEN THE HUNTER is slated for October 6th, 2023.

NO HARD FEELINGS Star Jennifer Lawerence was on hand to set the stage for her new R-rated comedy, NO HARD FEELINGS in which she plays a woman who’s hired to date a socially awkward teen. The main hook here is that she’s actually hired by the boy’s parents. We were treated to a clip in which a sexy Lawerence attempts to bust a move on the young man. The big selling point here is Lawerence’s comedic chops which we haven’t really seen at this level before. NO HARD FEELINGS opens on June 23, 2023.

ANYONE BUT YOU Continuing to keep the spirit of irreverent R-rated comedies alive, Sony also gave us a look at ANYONE BUT YOU, starring Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney. Powell and Sweeney were both on hand and they treated attendees to the trailer. It’s just what the title suggests; It’s essentially a tale of two individuals who hate each other so much, that they actually find themselves attracted to each other. ANYONE BUT YOU opens sometime in 2023.

GRAN TURISMO A very energetic David Harbour and his co-star Orlando Bloom were on hand to deliver the first-ever trailer for Neill Blomkamp’s race action-heavy tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose next-to-none gaming skills would lead him to compete in actual car races.  This one has quite the fan base including director Blomkamp himself. GRAN TURISMO opens on August 11, 2023.

UNTITLED GHOSTBUSTERS AFTERLIFE SEQUEL No footage from this film as its makers are in the middle of shooting but producer Jason Reitman, director Gil Kenan, and cast members Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, McKenna Grace, and Finn Wolfhard sent along a recorded message right from the set. No word on a subtitle nor was there a confirmed release date but it appears as if all involved are having a blast. Personally, I loved AFTERLIFE therefore, I’m greatly looking forward to this movie. Hopefully, it makes its rumored holiday release. 

THE EQUALIZER 3 You can’t keep a skilled badass down so it should come as absolutely no surprise that director Antoine Fuqua is back with THE EQUALIZER 3. Mr. Fuqua was on hand to talk about the movie, of course, but he was also on hand to pay tribute to the film’s star, the legendary Denzel Washington. What’s more, he was there to bestow upon the actor, CinemaCon’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Following a stirring tribute reel consisting of clips from Washington’s illustrious career, Fuqua welcomed the legend to the stage. Washington was genuinely touched and delivered a brief but wonderful speech. He and Fuqua then dished on THE EQUALIZER 3 and went on to premiere an extended trailer. It looks fittingly violent and in perfect keeping with the series. Of course, this franchise is loosely based on the old t.v. show and in this third chapter, trained assassin Robert McCall finds himself jumping into action once more, in an effort to protect his friends from the Italian Mafia. THE EQUALIZER 3 opens on September 1st.

NAPOLEON Sony Pictures capped off their presentation with a look at an epic battle sequence from NAPOLEON starring Joquin Phoenix in the title role. This period piece was directed by the legendary Ridley Scott and quite frankly, I thought this particular footage won the night. This thing is being painted on a massive scale. NAPOLEON is actually an Apple Puls title but Sony has stepped up to the plate to give it a theatrical release beforehand and quite frankly, that’s certainly how I plan on experiencing it!

Sony also shared a brand new trailer for INSIDIOUS: THE RED DOOR and also offered a brief peek at this May’s THE MACHINE.

By and large, a very entertaining Sony Pictures presentation!

In 2014, Mast would join forces with colleague John Pugh to create Cinemast.net as a means discuss film from a fan and analytical perspective. Together, Mast and Pugh would also create the 501 (C)(3) nonprofit, Film and Media Alliance of Southern Utah (FMASU) in 2017. FMASU’s mission is to encourage, inspire and educate filmmaking talent and to preserve film history. Adam currently resides in southern Utah with his amazing wife, Tonja, and their four wonderful children.

SPIDERMAN 1

Peter parker is a nerd student , his parents died when he was a child and he lives with his aunt may and his uncle Ben

one day in a school trip, a spider bites him and then he become muscle and his eyes change and he starts to be like a spider.

Normand made a experiment with himself. And this experiment's result was very bad and he become in a bad person like a monster, he change to the green elf.

SPIDERMA N 2

Peter Parker struggles to balance his crime-fighting duties as Spider-Man with the demands of his normal life. • He loses a job, faces financial difficulties, and struggles to maintain his physics studies at Columbia University.

Harry, now head of Oscorp's research division, sponsors the research of brilliant nuclear scientist Otto Octavius, Peter's idol. Octavius, who dreams of perfecting fusion power, wears a harness of powerful robotic arms with artificial intelligence for an experiment in sustained fusion.

Though the experiment becomes unstable, the arrogant Octavius refuses to halt it, with disastrous results: his wife is killed, the neural inhibitor chip which prevents the arms from influencing Octavius's own mind is fried by an electrical arc, and the arms are fused to his spine.

Since that moment Dr. Octavius becomes an Spiderman’s enemy because he thinks than his wike is dead because him so he wants to revenge.

He left his life of superhero for many days and he becomes to a normal citizen but Without Spider-Man, crime in the city rises approximately 75%. Peter realizes his need after watching a man get mugged, and attempts to remedy his inaction by saving a child from a burning building.

After that Aunt May advises Peter that sometimes it is necessary to sacrifice one's dreams for the greater good. Realizing that the city's need for Spider-Man is greater than his personal ambitions, Peter desires to become Spider-Man again.

then proceeds to battle Octavius across town. the two fight each other atop an elevated train and Dr. Octopus throttles the accelerator to maximum and then destroys the control panel. But Spiderman stops the train but then Octopus captured and delivered him to harry

Harry unmasks Spider-Man and is shocked to discover that the enemy he swore to kill is his best friend, but then peter woke up and convinces Harry to reveal Octavius's whereabouts, so he can rescue Mary Jane and prevent Octavius from finishing his reactor.

then peter find where is octavius and convenced him to stop the reactor and Octavius uses his mechanical arms to collapse the floor of the building, successfully drowning the reactor at the cost of his own life.

Mary Jane sees Peter unmasked and immediately understands the immense burden that his been put on him with this identity, but also sees that he does indeed love her. After they escape, Peter explains that as long as he is Spider-Man, Mary Jane will be a target for his enemies, and they cannot be together

Mary Jane Watson: A friend Peter has loved since he was a child, yet he gave up the chance of being with her due to his obligations as a superhero. Sincethen, she has become a successful Broadway actress and model, and becomesengagedto John Jameson.

Spiderman 3

Peter Parker has begun to feel secure in his life and plans to propose to Mary Jane Watson, who has just recently made her Broadway musical debut. While Peter and Mary Jane are on a date, a small meteorite crashes nearby, and an extraterrestrial symbiote attaches itself to Peter's moped.

Meanwhile, escaped convict Flint Marko falls into a pit of a particle accelerator that fuses his body with the surrounding sand. The result allows him to shapeshift at will, becoming the Sandman.

Peter's best friend, Harry Osborn, who seeks vengeance for his father's death, which he believes Peter caused, attacks him using new weapons adapted from the Green Goblin technology his father had left behind. During the scuffle, Harry injures his head and suffers from partial amnesia, making him forget his feud and the fact that Peter is Spider-Man.

during a festival honoring Spider-Man for saving Gwen Stacy's life, Sandman attempts to rob an armored car, and overpowers Spider-Man. NYPD Captain George Stacy (Gwen's father) later informs Peter and Aunt May that Ben Parker's killer was actually Flint Marko, and that the now-deceased Dennis Carradine was merely an accomplice.

Wearing the new suit, Spider-Man locates Marko, fights him in a cavernous underground subway tunnel and, upon discovering that water can dissolve Marko's body, rips open a large water pipe to deliver what he believes to be a lethal torrent of water, reducing the Sandman to mud.

Peter confronts Harry at the Osborn mansion. With the help of the black suit, Peter is victorious in a brutal fight, which leaves Harry's face disfigured due to an explosion from one of his own pumpkin bombs.

Brock, by chance, is at the same church praying for Peter's death when the symbiote falls from the tower and takes over his body. Eddie, now reincarnated as Venom, finds the Sandman and suggests joining forces to destroy Spider-Man, to which the Sandman agrees.

The pair of villains put Mary Jane in a taxicab and hang it from a gigantic web above a construction site filled with sand. Peter approaches Harry for help, but is turned down. However, Harry learns the truth about his father's death from his butler Bernard, and arrives in time to rescue Peter; they form an alliance against the two villains.

As the fight progresses, Harry temporarily subdues a gigantic, monstrous incarnation of the Sandman, and Venom attempts to impale Peter with Harry's glider, but Harry jumps in the way and is mortally wounded, suffering the same fate as his father.

During his fight with Venom, Peter notices that falling lengths of pipe appear to distress the symbiote, and Peter recalls how the church bell's toll weakened it, and creates a ring of several pipes around Venom to make a fence of sonic vibrations.

Peter and Harry forgive each other before Harry dies with Mary Jane and Peter at his side. They attend Harry's funeral along with Aunt May, Bernard, and the Stacys. A few days later, Peter walks into the jazz bar where Mary Jane is singing. They embrace, begin to dance and begin to improve on their relationship.

PETER PARKER (SPIDERMAN) • he was a bad person since he has worn the black suit. • He has wanted to ask Mery Jane if she wanted to be his wife.

FLINT MARKO (SANDMAN) • he was a good person but has •  stolen for save her daughter

EDDIE BROCK (VENOM) • Peter's rival at the Daily Bugle. • He is exposed by Peter for creating a fake incriminating image of Spider-Man, and leaps at the opportunity to exact his revenge when he bonds with an extraterresrialsymbiote. 

MARY JANE • Peter Parker's girlfriend and a Broadway actress, whom he has loved since childhood.

HARRY OSBORN • believes Spider-Man murdered his father.

J. JONAH JAMESON • dominant  • proud  • Cranky • mean • obsessive • corrupt  • ambitious  • Rarely failed to yell at your employees unless they need something.

The new Spider-Man film shows that representation is a winning strategy

Turns out inclusivity also means more people want to give you their money! The early box office figures for the new Spider-Man film — and the demographic data of moviegoers — paint a vivid picture.

Who is he? There are plenty of variations on who Spider-Man is , and now Miles Morales is getting the spotlight.

• You might be familiar with the original web slinging New York-based hero named Peter Parker. Miles is another variation of the hero in a different universe. He's a Puerto Rican, afro-Latino teenager from Brooklyn.
• While he's been part of the Marvel universe for years, he arguably made his biggest splash as the protagonist of the recent Spider-Man animated films, starting with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse , a sleeper hit from 2018 that won an Oscar for best animated feature and earned nearly $400 million worldwide at the box office.

What's the big deal? The most recent film in the series, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has made even bigger headlines and received rave reviews.

• The film grossed $208 million worldwide in its opening weekend, roughly three times as much as the opening of the first film, as reported by NPR's critic, Bob Mondello .
• And while in his review Mondello cites the inventive animation and plot as contributing to the success, he says that the diversity on screen was a huge draw for audiences.
• That ranges from the main hero portrayed by Shameik Moore, to the several Spider-women featured, as well as the India based Spider-guy, Pavitr Prabhakar.
• According to Mondello's reporting, the film opened strongly in 59 countries. In North America, exit tracking found that the audience was about one-third Latino and another third Black and Asian, diversity percentages far higher than for most superhero films.

What are people saying?

Here's what the co-director of the first film, Peter Ramsey, had to say about the significance of Miles in a 2019 interview with NPR :

This genre allows people to sort of project themselves onto these heroic figures who struggle with their own difficulties and own insecurities,

[People of color] want to be part of the story, want to be part of the myth. If you can't be part of a myth like that, then what do you have in a culture?

And here's Mondello again, in his review of Across the Spider-Verse :

If the last film was a major reset for genre expectations, Across The Spider-Verse is an expansion for artistic ones, rich enough in feeling and character and innovative visuals to warrant — and I'm kind of astonished to be saying this — the second or even third visit that fans will want to give it. I may just join them.

So, what now?

• Across The Spider-Verse 's numbers put it alongside the big live action superhero blockbusters, something Mondello says is "mildly astonishing" for an animated film not made by Pixar or Disney.

Zendaya was already a big star when she was cast as MJ in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starting with 2017’s “ Spider-Man : Homecoming.” By that point in her career she had already amassed a huge following as the star of two Disney Channel hits, “Shake It Up” and “K.C. Undercover,” plus popped up in Beyonce’s “Lemonade” film and was a runner-up on “Dancing With the Stars.” None of that apparently registered for “Spider-Man” producer Amy Pascal.

“We were both very, very young, but my career was already kind of going, and his changed overnight,” Zendaya told Vogue . “One day you’re a kid and you’re at the pub with your friends, and then the next day you’re Spider-Man. I definitely watched his life kind of change in front of him. But he handled it really beautifully.”

Both actors are likely to return in a fourth “Spider-Man” movie, although there’s no telling when that might be as neither Sony nor Disney have officially announced their “Spider-Man 4.”

“All I can say is that we have been actively engaging in conversations about what it could potentially look like for a fourth rendition of my character,” Holland told press last November . “Whether or not we can find a way to do justice to the character is another thing.”

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed to  Entertainment Weekly  in February 2023 that Holland’s fourth “Spider-Man” movie was being written at the time. “All I will say is that we have the story,” he said then. “We have big ideas for that, and our writers are just putting pen to paper now.”

Development on the “Spider-Man 4” script was paused amid the WGA strike, with Holland  telling  Variety  last June, “We’ve put the meetings on pause in solidarity with the writers. There’s been multiple conversations had, but at this point it’s very, very early stages.”

“Are we going to make another movie? Of course we are,” Pascal herself told  Variety  last summer at the “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” premiere. “We’re in the process, but the writers strike, nobody is working during the strike. We’re all being supporters and whenever they get themselves together, we’ll get started.”

‘Spider-Man 4’ Production Update May Confirm Daredevil Appearance, 2025 Release

For the second time in just a few weeks, a reliable Marvel Studios’ insider has indicated that production on the studio’s fourth Spider-Man film–which will once again be made in collaboration with Sony– will get underway before the end of 2024. While that’s definitely an encouraging development for fans who have been waiting to find out when Tom Holland ‘s Peter Parker will return to the screen, the rumored start date could point to some interesting possibilities for the film.

Following Jeff “The In” Sneider ‘s report that Spider-Man 4 was targeting a Fall 2024 start of production , insider Daniel RPK has seemingly confirmed that timeline. According to RPK, Sony and Marvel Studios have set a late September date for cameras to roll on the sequel.

When Will Spidey 4 Swing Into Theaters?

If production does indeed kick off in late 2024, it provides Sony with an opportunity to release Spider-Man 4 in 2025, something they have been reportedly hoping to achieve. Production on the previous three Spider-Man films have taken 3-4 months to complete; if the same timeline is followed in the fourth installment, principal photography should be complete by the end of January 2025. Could the film then be ready to hit theaters before the end of 2025?

The short answer is that it absolutely could be. Each of the last three MCU-set Spider-Man films hit theaters roughly eight months after they wrapped principal photography. Most recently, Spider-Man: No Way Home began production in October 2020, took a break for the holidays, resumed in January 2021 and concluded in late-March. No Way Home hit theaters in mid-December 2021.

Being ready for theaters is one thing; finding a release date in an already jam-packed 2025 is something else entirely. Sony Pictures, not Marvel Studios, sets the dates for the releases of their Spider-Man collaborations. As of now, Sony has an Untitled Marvel Movie set for June 27, 2025. Even by Sony’s sometimes bewildering standards, 3 months in post-production surely can’t be enough. However, just because Sony sets the dates does not mean Marvel Studios, who produces the collaborations, won’t work with their partner in finding a suitable release date. And to that end, an interesting coincidence may point to a target date for Spider-Man 4 .

Only a Fool Would Charge into Battle with a Dull Blade

Much has been made of the struggles of Marvel Studios’ Blade in getting up and running . There’s no benefit to belaboring the point now, however, the Daywalkers struggles may ultimately benefit the Web-Slinger. Following Marvel Studios’ latest overhaul of its theatrical slate, Blade ‘s release date was shuffled to November 7, 2025. With the film set to begin production late in 2024, that release date seems doable. However, during Disney’s recent CinemaCon panel, Marvel Studios One Above All, Kevin Feige , failed to provide an update on Blade despite including 2025 releases Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts and The Fantastic Four in his presentation . Could there be some Marvel/Sony symbiosis involved?

With Marvel Studios still working on the back end of its Multiverse Saga, including the fifth Avengers film which is currently still slated for a May 1, 2026 release, its easy to imagine Blade being pushed to their open February 13, 2026 date even without Spider-Man 4 being taken into consideration. However, if Sony is keen on getting Holland’s Webhead into theaters in 2025, Disney could work with them on doing so since it benefits their MCU as well. While Sony likely covets a mid-December release for Spidey 4 , James Cameron ‘s Avatar 3 –a sure billion dollar box office take for Disney–is set for December 19, 2025. Cameron recently claimed that Avatar 3 was on track for that date and if that’s true, there’s no way Disney budges from that date. However, they might happily move Blade into 2026 leaving a big opening for Spider-Man 4 to hit theaters on November 7, 2025.

Marvel Team-Up: The Wallcrawler and The Man Without Fear

Since Charlie Cox returned to the role of Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way, Home , fans have been looking forward to Daredevil and Spider-Man teaming up as they’ve done so frequently in the pages of Marvel Comics. In late 2023, rumors about the plot of Spider-Man 4 indicated that the film would give fans what they want, pairing the pals up to take on Vincent D’Onofrio ‘s Mayor Fisk in a “street-level Civil War. ” A recent update on the production status of Daredevil: Born Again may point to that indeed being in the cards.

After a lengthy delay in the production of Daredevil: Born Again which allowed Marvel Studios to retool the project, principal photography on the first nine episodes wrapped in early April 2024. With those episodes in the can, work on post-production to get the episodes ready for a 2025(?) release will take priority. With that work being done as well as continued work on the scripts for the next nine episodes, it was reported that the cast and crew won’t resume work on Daredevil: Born Again until November 2024 . Isn’t that convenient…?

If  work on Spider-Man 4 begins in September and production on Daredevil: Born Again doesn’t resume until November, there is ample opportunity for Charlie Cox , Vincent D’Onofrio and anyone else from the cast of the streaming series to film scenes for Spidey 4 . Like Hannibal Smith, Feige loves it when a plan comes together.

To be sure, this is a big game of dominos and we’ve not even seen the first one fall just yet; however, should things line up with the schedules of directors (one is not yet in place for Spider-Man 4 , though an offer was reportedly extended to someone), actors and studio availability, everyone could come out of a shit storm smelling like roses.

"Spider-Man: No Way Home" proved to be just as action-packed as it was nostalgic when it reached the silver screen in 2021. Former Peter Parker actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield — who still gets nervous discussing his "No Way Home role — return to play their respective versions of the web-slinger, and numerous legacy villains join the fray as well. At the same time, the film doesn't delve too deep into the inner workings of the two previous Spidey-centric franchises. It doesn't catch up with many other notable characters, including the first-ever live-action film take on Mary Jane Watson, as portrayed by Kirsten Dunst.

Yes, the staple of director Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" trilogy doesn't appear in "No Way Home" in any capacity. As it turns out, this isn't because of any issues on Dunst's end. In fact, as she explained in an interview with GQ Magazine , she never received a call from anyone at Marvel Studios to do so. "No, no. I would have," Dunst said when asked if she was contacted about the film. Evidently, she would've happily appeared in what some fans regard as the Marvel Cinematic Universe's worst "Spider-Man" movie , but the opportunity never came.

Continuing, Dunst shared that she wants to play MJ again someday, albeit in a rather unique production.

Following its 2010 cancellation, fans of the Tobey Maguire-led "Spider-Man" franchise have clamored for "Spider-Man 4." Sam Raimi has confirmed whether he's working on such a film with Maguire , and, unfortunately, the sequel has yet to come to light. If it does, though, there's a good chance that Kirsten Dunst would be up for another turn as Mary Jane. She told GQ that she'd want such a project to stand out from modern superhero media. She recalled of the 2002 "Spider-Man" movie, "Sam Raimi was like a cult director, so it felt like we were making an indie disguised as a superhero film."

Dunst then explained that this is the feel she would want for another "Spider-Man" feature. "It would be funny to be like, ok, let's take Tobey and I and do it in a weird indie way where it's like a different kind of superhero film," she said. She specifically likened the vibe of this hypothetical movie to 2012's "Chronicle" from director Josh Trank. The found footage drama takes the usual superhero tale in a unique direction, centering on a group of teens who develop superpowers after coming into contact with a mysterious object.

With Spider-Man as popular as ever, perhaps someday, in some form, Kirsten Dunst will get one more shot at playing Mary Jane Watson.

‘Spider-Man’s Re-Release Swings Into Domestic Box Office With Impressive Haul

Every live-action 'Spider-Man' movie is getting a theatrical re-release across eight weeks.

• Spider-Man 's re-release outperformed Shrek 2 on Monday, earning the highest per-theater average of any film currently in theaters.

In a rather unusual turn of events, a couple of two-decade-old blockbusters found spots in the top 10 of the domestic box office charts on Monday. After DreamWorks’ Shrek 2 posted a solid three-day haul in its 20th anniversary re-release last weekend, Sony’s Spider-Man performed even better on Monday. The superhero classic was re-released in a third of Shrek 2 ’s screens, but posted a significantly better per-theater average. Released as a part of Sony’s “Spider-Mondays” program , the film actually took the number three spot on the Monday box office chart , behind only Civil War — featuring Spider-Man star Kirsten Dunst — and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire .

Spider-Man grossed $681,364 from 466 theaters nationwide on Monday , for a per-theater average of nearly $1,500 — the highest of any film currently in release . By comparison, Shrek 2 generated $1.3 million over the last weekend from over 1,500 screens, for a per-theater average of nearly $1,000. On Monday, the animated classic took the ninth spot on the domestic chart, three places behind fellow DreamWorks hit Kung Fu Panda 4 . Not a single Kung Fu Panda movie existed when Shrek 2 was released to staggering box office success back in 2004. Incidentally, the movie had the second-biggest domestic debut of all time, behind none other than Spider-Man .

Directed by Sam Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire as the titular superhero, the first Spider-Man was something of a cultural touchstone , launching an entire era of superhero cinema that lasted two decades. Not only was it the first film in history to gross more than $100 million in its opening weekend, it went on to become the third-biggest hit of 2002 with nearly $821 million worldwide , and scored two Oscar nominations. The film’s current domestic haul, including the re-release figures, stands at just over $404 million, making it the 44th-biggest film in history, and the second-biggest in the live-action Spider-Man film series .

How Have All of the 'Spider-Man' Films Performed?

Raimi and Maguire returned for two more Spider-Man adventures, and were scheduled to make a fourth film together, but plans were ultimately scuttled in favor of a reboot. Directed by Marc Webb with Andrew Garfield taking over the titular role, the reboot series was axed after two installments — The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 . Since 2016, Tom Holland has played the character in three solo movies and a handful of team-up films as a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A couple of years ago, Maguire and Garfield reprized their roles alongside Holland in Spider-Man: No Way Home — the most successful installment of the Spidey live-action series. Raimi, on the other hand, recently directed the MCU hit Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness .

Sony will also release Spider-Man 2 , Spider-Man 3 , The Amazing Spider-Man , The Amazing Spider-Man 2 , Spider-Man: Homecoming , Spider-Man: Far From Home , and Spider-Man: No Way Home in theaters across the next few weeks as a part of the “Spider-Mondays” festival. Now that Fantastic Four has been cast with some basics of the storyline revealed (an alternate universe!), attention seems to be turning to another far-off Marvel project, Spider-Man 4, where a reset Peter Parker will face new challenges while still needing to be a part of The Avengers. Or, as some rumors suggest, perhaps he’s moving to street level with the likes of Daredevil, Echo and The Punisher as he so often does in the comics.

Now, we have a pair of rumors about Spider-Man 4 that have many fans excited, but the sourcing is…debatable, with the originators getting some things both right and wrong in the past. But even if something perhaps used to be true, things can indeed change over time.

The first rumor via World of Reel is that Sam Raimi is a top contender to direct Spider-Man 4. Raimi, obviously the director of the Tobey Maguire-era movies, and recent MCU helmer of Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, a somewhat divisive film, but one I’d argue was a lot of fun. And that gave him hands-on Holland experience, at least a bit of it.

The Best Gaming Mouse That’ll Improve Your Aim

Raimi seems like a top choice given that past choices like Justin Lin and Drew Goddard may have moved entirely on to other projects. Further rumors are John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein who did Dungeons and Dragons and wrote Spider-Man Homecoming. Also, Jon Favreau, potentially. But Raimi returning to direct an actual Spider-Man film would certainly be something to see.

A second rumor from MyTimetoShineHello is that Sydney Sweeny has joined the MCU after failing to do so with Madame Web, Sony’s truly bizarre side-project in which she was as supporting character. The unconfirmed idea is that she will be cast in Spider-Man 4, but fans are extrapolating that to mean she would be playing Felicia Hardy, aka Black Cat, as a new, non-MJ love interest for Holland’s Peter. Gwen Stacy could be another possibility.

This is a bit of a leap given that the rumor stops at a certain point and fans are sort of making up the rest. But this aligns with something I predicted/advised in the wake of Madame Web, that after Sony badly fumbled Sweeney, Disney would almost certainly swoop in to add the in-demand actress to the MCU at some point. And from the moment Madame Web was announced where Sweeney plays a proto-Spider-Woman without powers, the idea seemed to be that her being cast as Black Cat instead would have been a layup. While the sourcing and extrapolation of this may be a reach, it’s easy to see how this may end up manifesting.

It's way, way too early to know how these rumors play out. Even if they are true, Spider-Man 4 doesn’t have a release date. Some are predicting the end of 2025, but given how many MCU movies are already being jammed into that year, 2026 would seem more likely. So again, we are far off, though yes, the director, script and cast may start taking shape soon. We’ll see if any of this pans out.
